Two years later, Smith moved to her new location across from the Raley’s shopping center on Horseshoe Bar Road. In December, Smith will celebrate four years at that location. A 10-year resident of Loomis, Smith volunteers at Franklin Elementary, her children’s school. “I try to carry local products, products manufactured in the U.S.A. and also products that give back to other organizations. Lily Tanner recently started working for McLaughlin Theatre Company in Loomis. Tanner, who lives in Sacramento, will direct McLaughlin’s fall junior production, “Seussical Jr.” She will also teach “Collaborative Theatre-making,” acting classes for students aged 8 to 18 years old. The Loomis News asked Tanner to talk about her theater career. Her answers follow.
What’s your earliest memory of wanting to work in the theater? “I’ve been performing in plays and musicals since I was a kid but I never thought that working in theater was a career option until my third year of college. I was in a class called improvisation and theater-making, and one of our assignments was to create a 20-minute play in about an hour. There were 10 students in our class and we all had a bunch of ideas. I found myself organizing everyone’s ideas, facilitating discussions about which ideas would work well, and guiding the group to turn those ideas into scenes. It was the best I had ever felt in a rehearsal room because I was helping everyone to work together to tell a story. I realized then that I wanted to be a director because it meant that I could help people work together to create art every day.” What advice would you give to young people interested in acting? “One thing I see young actors do is not fully commit to their characters because they are self-conscious about how their peers will view them if they act ‘silly’ or ‘emotional’ on stage. I encourage young actors to push
past the fear of being made fun of to really engage with their characters.” As an acting instructor, how do you approach teaching your students? “My classes are structured so that the students create their own show as a group, so I feel that one of my main tasks in the rehearsal room is to maintain an environment where everyone feels that they can put forth ideas, be creative and take risks without being judged. I think that the process of creating theatre is a very vulnerable and personal one, so I want everyone to feel that they are safe and valued.”

What are some of the tips you will give them? “In general, performers need to be disciplined, which is a word that encompasses a lot of behaviors, a few of which are being polite in the rehearsal room, being punctual, knowing your lines, warming up, examining your habits and adjusting the negative ones, paying attention to the performance whether you’re on or offstage, etc. I also think that theatremakers of any discipline need to be open to taking risks and trying out new ideas.” What might be surprising about being a performer? “I think the thing that people might find surprising about being a performer is that it isn’t easy. When you’re watching a show, you know that you are seeing a story unfold but what you don’t know is that the people onstage have so much in their heads and they are still able to act, sing, dance, and transport you to another place. Where did you train for the theater? “I earned my B.A. in theatre and dance from U.C.-Davis in December of 2016. I feel very fortunate to have attended U.C.Davis because I was able to receive a multidisciplinary theatre education. Not only was I able to learn about acting and theatre history but I also was able to be an assistant director and sound designer, and to create my own work. I also attended the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre summer intensive workshop in the summer of 2014. Being a student at Dell’Arte taught me the importance of paying attention to the full body when creating theatre, and that failure is an important and necessary part of the creative process.”
Melanie is the epitome of a professional business woman. She is fair, trustworthy, caring, confident, honest, and she cares about her clients. She serves many people from Sun City Lincoln Hills and her service to them goes above and beyond. She checks in on them to make sure they are doing well especially if they have been ill. She has even transported some clients to social events, for them to get Spotlight out and enjoy socializing. Melanie is not in it for the money, she truly cares about her clients. Her community involvement through Rotary and the Chamber of a Commerce is apparent by her willingness to serve her community. Melanie is a regular volunteer for events from serving, to selling raffle tickets
(and she is quite the seller) to organizing an activity at an event. When it comes to the dirty work, Melanie never hesitates to jump right in. I love working along side her because she is in it to get it done. Melanie has also stepped out of her normal routine and is going to be a host mom for our Rotary exchange student. She and her husband, Keith are looking forward to this new venture. Our exchange student, Mateo, will be getting his fill of skiing and snowboarding this winter while staying with the Bergevins. For a couple that has never had children of their own, this is a huge “out of your comfort zone”experience but they are welcoming him with open arms. Melanie Bergevin is a wonderful representative for Women in Business, she truly is a wonderful example, mentor and role model.

Since it opened with 100 students in 2001, Rocklin Academy Family of Schools has expanded to four campuses serving more than 2,600 students in grades K-12. The district has scored high for teacher quality, student test scores and diversity by independent organizations such as Niche, and by the Placer Herald. Superintendent Robin Stout said the founders of the school system saw an opportunity for a new educational option in the community, so they opened a set of public, tuition-free charter schools open to all students. Rocklin Academy’s campuses are divided into Turnstone, Meyers and Western Sierra Collegiate Academy. It is also the first public school system in the greater Sacramento area to provide the nationally recognized Core Knowledge curriculum. Stout said students thrive in it, and together with its exceptional teachers and individualized instruction, the district has flourished.
CEO Lucy Van Horn said she was moved to help her daughter, Jeni, open Studio 65 Dance Company when Jeni’s passion for dance and teaching became apparent. They had both lived in Rocklin for 23 years, they thought it would be the perfect place to open a state-of-the-art dance studio. Lucy, a real estate broker and owner of the Van Horn Group by day, said she thought it was a good time to invest in her daughter’s passion and start a family business. Today she attributes their business’ success to a staff of genre-specific teachers and state-of-the-art resources. “We have set goals and guidelines for each upcoming year for our students. We want to keep our classes smaller and only allow a maximum class size per teacher, per room, for up to 16 students, so we can focus specifically on each and every child’s development,” Lucy said. She said their goal is for students to focus less on “winning” than on development, techniques, teamwork, discipline and

Strikes Unlimited Strikes Unlimited owner Kari Pegram describes the bowling alley as “one big playground.” Not only does it offer 50 bowling lanes, but the entertainment center has an arcade, party spaces, a private lounge and a restaurant with in-house catering. Customers can throw birthday parties for their kids or friends, watch live performances inside the Halftime Bar and Grill or participate in a bowling league, among several other options. Pegram said the activities are what sets Strikes apart from other bowling alleys. “We have something for everyone in the community, from families to singles to large corporations that can rent out the entire venue,” she said. “We have full-scale entertainment for all ages.” Established in 2006 and under Pegram’s ownership in 2011, Strikes Unlimited has about 90 employees between all its operations. She said her favorite part of running the business is being able to provide job opportunities and meet lots of

Daycation for Seniors Yvonne Mitchell has a true passion for what she does everyday. Years ago she noticed the gap in great elder care for seniors not ready for a nursing home. Lisa Hansen Lisa Hansen, with her husband Zach, started Growing Brilliant in 2013 with their Rocklin location. Lisa is a credentialed elementary school teacher and also has experience as a preschool teacher and reading specialist. Lisa holds a master’s degree in education and is currently working on her doctoral dissertation at the University of San Francisco.
