hen most of us think of funnyman Bill Murray, images of his classic performances on Saturday Night Live or “Ghostbusters” come to mind, or maybe his antics throwing golf clubs and cell phones at the annual Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament. However, this is Bill Murray as you have never seen him before, and it’s right here in the Coachella Valley. As the story goes, Murray became friends with cellist Jan Vogler in New York. Curious about each other’s artistic realm and interests, they decided to work together on New Worlds, a project that showcases the core of American values in literature and music. Along with violin and piano, the Hollywood-A-lister and virtuosic

cellist perform a program that celebrates Murray’s love for classical music and the strong artistic voices that have influenced generations of artists. Murray will read classic literature, dance a tango and sing in an encounter between great music and literature featuring celebrated masters of their art. Works by Bach, Piazzolla, Ravel and Bernstein complete an evening where music and literature meet in a kaleidoscope of words and notes. Unexpected acts might include contemporary hits by Van Morrison and surprises such as “Blessing the Boats” by American poet Lucille Clifton paired with Saint-Saëns’ “The Swan.” The “friends” joining Murray and Vogler onstage will be Mira

Wang on violin and Vanessa Perez on piano, exploring the meaning involved in the bridges artists have built between America and Europe. Twain, Hemingway, Whitman, Cooper, Bernstein, Gershwin and Foster are some of the strongest voices that influenced generations of people in America and shared the charm, energy and creative force of the New World. These influences will be brought forth on stage by Murray and his talented team of coperformers. New Worlds celebrated its world premiere in Dresden, Germany, in June. It premiered in the U.S. in August and will be shown at only a few live appearances in southern California before the tour closes at Carnegie Hall.

ased on the 1994, Australian smash comedy-drama film, this delightful and heartwarming story follows two drag queens and a transgender woman as they journey across the Australian Outback in a battered old tour bus that they have named “Priscilla,” along the way encountering various groups and individuals. The three friends start out searching for love and friendship and end up finding more than they could have ever dreamed. The hit film helped to positively introduce LGBT themes to a mainstream audience. It was screened in the 1994 Cannes Film Festival before becoming

a cult classic in Australia, Europe and the United States. The musical opened in 2006 in Sydney before travelling to New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada and Broadway. Songs include “It’s Raining Men,” “I Will Survive,” “Boogie Wonderland,” “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” “I Love The Nightlife,” and many more. Palm Canyon Theater’s cast for the musical includes Ron Coronado in the role of Bernadette Bassinger, Anthony Nannini in the role of Adam Whitely/Felicia Jollygoodfellow and Nicholas Sloan playing the part of Anthony “Tick” Belrose/ Mitzi Del Bra.

PATTIE DALY CARUSO An unexpected loss that left the world a better place By Alison Elsner

hen we lose someone unexpectedly, the feeling of unfinished business can be overwhelming. That’s what happened last month when Pattie Daly Caruso suddenly passed away of a heart attack in her sleep early one Sunday morning at her home in Palm Desert. Family, friends and admirers were left in a state of disbelief that this vibrant, energetic, generous and effusive presence, only 73 years young, had moved on to another place without warning. Caruso was known throughout the Coachella Valley as the classy yet down-to-earth host of “Valley Views,” the longest running television show in the desert (over 25 years). She was also known as the mother of Carson Daly, host of “The Voice” and entertainment anchor on the “Today Show.” Daly credited his mom as the person who had been the biggest inspiration in his life, pointing to her courage and ability to overcome adversity and keep moving forward, even in the face of breast cancer and life’s myriad challenges. In addition to Carson Daly, Caruso leaves behind her husband Richard Caruso, her PR Executive daughter, Quinn Daly and five grandchildren whom she cherished. But beyond the dear family members who now grieve, there is also a broad panorama of close friends and colleagues who worked with her. Many of those friends were—and are—members of Media Mavens, a prestigious group of professional women in the public relations and media business in the valley. Mavens was founded by Caruso in 2000 with “wing-women” Judy Vossler, Janet Newcomb, Gloria Greer and Lea Goodsell.

Caruso’s early career involved dancing and performing, including stage time at the Pasadena Playhouse. She moved up the ranks to become a reporter on CBS Local-2 Eye on the Desert, and her career catapulted forward as she established PDC Entertainment and launched her popular television show, featuring noteworthy members of the community and their worthwhile projects. She was an ally and supporter of dozens of charities, and she made everyone feel special and validated…like they mattered…because to her, they did. Her sincerity shone through, which is why the loss is even more palpable and painful. Often, one of the most therapeutic ways to work through a loss is by celebrating memories together. Upon learning of Caruso’s passing, hundreds of friends took to social media and email to share favorite stories, thoughts and anecdotes about the polished, professional and always kind-hearted Pattie Daly Caruso and the relationships that defined her and what she cared about. Here, we share a few of these: Pattie was the kindest, most supporting human I’ve ever known. She was a special kind of sensible cheerleader who encouraged people to follow their hearts and “go for it.” Pattie had a loving family and spread her love all around us and will always be in our hearts and minds. I met Pattie at a high season fundraising event many years ago. We were there with our highly teased hair and our dashing husbands, and both of us were ecstatic over our brand new jobs. Pattie had just started a new TV show and I had just been hired as a part time, freelance society reporter at the Desert Sun.

During the United Way Celebrity Waiters’ Dinner in 2007, our table theme was Prom Queens. Although Pattie was an accomplished TV personality, she also had a zany side. She made her grand entrance as a ‘knocked up’ Tacky Prom Queen of 1957. Whenever Pattie and I would see each other, we usually spoke about our children. She was so proud of her family and always asked about mine. She was also very supportive of my film career and hosted a few of the red carpets. We would share stories about the entertainment business, and one of my favorite emails from her included a photo of when Carson won his Emmy going through LAX security. She thought it was hilarious, tossed into the personal items bin going thru the metal detector. She was so full of love, laughter and life. She will be missed. ome people visit far-away places to explore unfamiliar cultures, climb craggy mountain peaks or loll in hammocks on pink sand beaches. Chef Art Herrera and General Manager John Farrow, co-owners of one of the valley’s premier eateries, spent their youths absorbing the cuisine of the Cordon Bleu as well as more exotic destinations like Morocco, France, Southeast Asia and Spain. After a successful run with their Seattle-based Greenbank Gourmet Catering Company, a series of coincidences brought them to the Coachella Valley where they uncovered a gem of a restaurant situated by a golf course pond at Date Palm Country Club. Via some serious redecorating and menu redevelopment, Art and John produced a multi-award winning

foodie Valhalla, the elegant yet casual AJ’s on the Green. Earth-toned walls hung with paintings by standout artist Bob Bengtsson speak to thoughtful presentation as do ecru table cloths and salon-style chairs. Center stage, a baby grand represents AJs commitment to high quality entertainment while the bistro-style Splash Bar welcomes the hip and lively. AJ’s philosophy is simple: “We use the freshest locally sourced supplies,” Chef Art said, “and specialize in combining unusual ingredients to make eating memorable and interesting.” They recently introduced two new salads: Pan Seared Atlantic Salmon Salad (romaine, granny smith apple, red onion, tomato, cucumber, Israeli cous cous and red quinoa tossed in a house vinaigrette crafted fresh

oxie Rooftop Bar and Lounge, the hip and happening hang out in downtown Palm Springs, is as much an attitude as it is a nightlife venue, according to owner and chef, Oscar Babb. Even their hashtag is #findyourmoxie. Guests are met with a cool patio vibe full of games atop the artificial turf that recreates a real-life urban, rooftop garden. The open, friendly floor plan is complemented by a large semi-circular bar on the left, tables and dark booths throughout and nightly music. Part of Babb’s goal was to encourage interaction between people. He says, “In all the locations we researched, we noticed how entire tables would be on their cell phones.

I wanted to bring people together by chatting, eating and playing games, to take them away from the daily routine.” Babb and his co-owner wife, Jennifer, have created an alternative yet tasty menu with “Bar Bites” and “Shareables” like Giant Pretzel with Pub Cheese ($7), Street Tacos ($3) and $8 Flat Breads. Full meals are also offered, including dishes like Ahi Nachos and the Three Cheese Burger (both $15) as well as Shrimp Rotini, BBQ Pulled Pork Nachos and Mediterranean Lemon Salmon (all $14). Their food is all locally sourced and organic, with numerous lowcarb options. There is the traditional Guilty Pleasure Platter of fries and onion rings, too. For night owls, the “Midnight Munchie Bucket” is

available all evening for $5. Happy Hour takes place Wednesday through Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. with drink specials like $5 Mai Tais and Margaritas, $4 well drinks and $5 glasses of house wine. There’s musical entertainment every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. through late night, and on Thursday evenings there’s even a Street Fair sing along starting at 6 p.m. Local musicians play live music every Friday and Saturday starting at 6 p.m. with “Dance Party” weekend nights starting at 9:30 p.m. featurng popular DJs spinning tunes. If you don’t have “moxie” when you arrive at this sought-after night spot, you most certainly will by the time you leave.

NEW THEATRE SEASON ‘Bad Seed,’ ‘Priscilla’ coming to Palm Canyon Theatre By Gary Walker

alm Canyon Theatre has two productions in October, and they couldn’t be more different: For Oct. 12-15, Maxwell Anderson’s “The Bad Seed” tells the story of a mother’s realization that her young daughter is a murderer. Ava Tethal plays Rhoda Penmark, a crafty, seemingly caring and creepy only child of Christine Penmark (Yo Younger). After being confronted about the death of Rhoda’s classmate by her school administrator (Margie Lewis) and the dead boy’s mother (Morgana Corelli), Rhoda is implicated in the death of the boy, the family dog and a neighbor. Later, the desperate mother catches Rhoda in the act of killing Leroy Jessup (the brilliant Garnett Smith), while others still believe Rhoda is “a perfect child.”

Award-winning Steve Fisher directs this 1954 play, adapted from the novel of the same name by American writer William March. John Lee Mahin adapted the play into the 1956 film of the same name. With elements of film noir and melodrama, the psychological horror/suspense thriller starred Nancy Kelly, Patty McCormack, Henry Jones, William Hopper, Evelyn Varden and Eileen Heckart, most of whom were in the original stage production, which ran for 334 performances in two Broadway theaters. Color is an important component of the staging. Fisher and PCT Co-Artistic Director JW Layne are keeping Rhoda’s emblematic red dress and shoes while eschewing the usual black-and-white set for a more colorful “just another day in Happyland” ambiance.

‘Priscilla’ Has Arrived “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” arrives in all her glory Oct. 27-Nov. 12, as PCT’s scintillating antidote to the previous “Bad Seed.” And if you saw the Oscar-winning movie, you must be anxious to see how the stage production turned out. This musical version, directed by Scott Smith, is based on the movie and is full of heart and understanding, dealing with three friends, who agree to take their drag show to the middle of the Australian outback in a bat-

‘Venus in Fur’ at CV Rep One of my favorite playwrights is David Ives (“All in the Timing,” “Sure Thing,” “The Universal Language,” etc.) and he provides Artistic Director Ron Celona with the first of Coachella Valley Rep’s four-play season, which is themed “Romance: Real or Imagined.” “Venus in Fur” will run Oct. 25-Nov. 19, and stars Angela Sauer and Patrick Zeller. Sauer plays Vanda Jordan, ands Zeller portrays Thomas Novachek in this two-handed “sizzling” comedy, which focuses on Thomas, a beleaguered playwright/director desperate to find an actress to play the female lead in his adaptation of the sadomasochistic tale, “Venus in Fur.” Jordan is an actress totally wrong for the role, but anxious to get the part. Reality begins to blur as they enter into an increasingly serious game of submission and domination that only one of them can win. Zeller’s numerous stage credits include “Comedy of Errors” and “Corpus Christie.” His films include: “Love and Death in Los Angeles” and “End of the Spear.” He has appeared on TV in “The Young and the Restless,” “All My Children,” “Law & Order” and “One Life to Live.” Sauer’s TV credits include “Masters of Sex.” She has worked with several theatrical companies, including A Noise Within, Kinsmen Shakespeare, Sacred Fools and Culver City Garden Theatre, which she founded. ‘The Mousetrap’ Theatre 29 director Katie Fleischmann has announced the Oct. 6-22 production of the longest running play of the 20th century: Agatha Christie’s white-knuckle murder mystery, “The Mousetrap,” which opened in 1952 in London and has been running continuously since then.

The classic thriller features a group of strangers stranded in a boarding house, cut off from the outside world by a snowstorm, who soon find out that there is a murderer in their midst. he oldest house in Palm Springs has opened for the season with five never-beforeseen exhibits that are a must for those interested in the “good old days.” The exhibits can be found in the McCallum Adobe, built in 1884 and the current home of the Palm Springs Historical Society, whose staff designed and constructed the exhibits. The McCallum Adobe is situated in the Village Green at 221 S. Palm Canyon Drive. The new exhibits feature six decades of presidential visits, home movies of Lucy and Desi, mid-century modern architects George and Robert Alexander, newspaper ads from the ‘40s and ‘50s and a rundown of films made in Palm Springs.

‘Palm Springs Loves Lucy and Desi’ features film clips from family home movies and clothes, posters and memorabilia. Many items, like Lucy’s hat and boots, are on loan from the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York, Lucy’s birthplace. The exhibit was developed under the guidance of desert resident and daughter Lucie Arnaz. Many of the home movies were filmed at their Thunderbird Country Club home where the famous family relaxed with friends away from the pressure of their hectic television production schedule.

‘The Alexanders: Triumph and Tragedy in Palm Springs’ tells the story of George and his son Robert Alexander, developers who brought more than 2,200 homes to the Coachella Valley, including 1,240 homes with a modern aesthetic to the city of Palm Springs. The exhibit catches the style that is synonymous with mid-century. Their tragic deaths in an airplane crash in 1965 shocked the community and marked the end of a building dynasty.

Pattie Daly Caruso was a close friend for almost 25 years. We experienced many ups and downs, and I appeared on her show dozens of times. My late husband, Lee, went to the Pasadena Playhouse with Pattie when they were around 19 years old. Pattie knew that I had quite a collection of jewelry, costumes and fancy hats. It never surprised me when she would call up any time day or night and say for example, ‘I’m coming over now, I need a hat for the Kentucky Derby!’ An hour later, the bell would ring and in would bounce Pattie, giggling and heading for my closet like she was in a clothing boutique having the

time of her life until she found what she wanted, as I sat crossed-legged on my bed completely bemused by my precious, funny friend’s antics.
