Welcome to Wickenburg For newcomers to Wickenburg or seasoned visitors, the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center can answer nearly anything a traveler wants to know about the town and surrounding area. Located at 216 N. Frontier Street, in the heart of historic downtown, the Visitor Center is housed in the restored Santa Fe Railroad Depot. Built in 1895, the depot’s red roof and proximity to the tracks make it HDV\ WR À QG 6WHS LQVLGH WKURXJK WKH old screen door, and the smiling faces behind the counter will answer all questions. Maps, shopping guides, lists of restaurants, local business directories and brochures for numerous things to do in the area are free for the taking. Whether in town for the afternoon or for the winter, the information and opWLRQV ZLOO EH VXUH WR KHOS À OO \RXU WLPH The Visitor Center is open seven days a week, October through May. On weekdays Chamber of Commerce activities are in full swing with volunteers and staff to greet visitors and answer questions. The volunteer desk LV À OOHG HYHU\ GD\ H[FHSW KROLGD\V E\ a collective force of about 15 regular helpers, which means visitors are welcomed on seven days a week for most of the year. Many of the volunteers have spent much or all of their lives in Wickenburg and can share a wealth of )DOO

information with newcomers. Just a few steps from the Visitor Center sits the restored 1900 Series 6RXWKHUQ 3DFLÀ F 'URYHU &DERRVH hooked to the A.T. and Santa Fe Railroad Engine No. 761, built in 1890. The train is open for tours on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through the winter season. In addition to housing interesting, historical artifacts, the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center is also on the information superhighway. Almost everything housed inside the depot can be accessed through one of two websites: outwickenburgway.com, or wickenburgchamber.com. 7KH À UVW LV JHDUHG WRZDUG WRXULVP DQG the second is a hub of information for chamber members and local events. Both can also be found on Facebook and Twitter where daily posts keep followers updated on events as they happen, including road closures, severe weather reports and more. Since its original restoration 30 years ago, the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce has maintained the depot. Recently, the chamber board of directors launched a major fundraising campaign to further repair, renovate and remodel the depot, making more room for the bustling visitor center and PRYLQJ DGPLQLVWUDWLYH RIÀ FHV LQWR DQ area previously used for storage. Work is planned to begin in early 2017 and 'HVWLQDWLRQ :LFNHQEXUJ
wrap up by August. The project has been made possible through generous donations of individuals and groups. Wickenburg is home to the wild, wild west, and with that comes ghost stories and theories from back in the day that have been told throughout generations. Wickenburg Legends and Ghost Tours is sharing those stories and tales with community members, tourists and anyone else who stops by who wants the hear unedited history of this small town and witness the unex-
plainable. Wickenburg Legends and Ghost Tours began about 8 years ago when mother and son Gloria and Scottie were caregivers working with hospice. They heard stories told by those who had lived in Wickenburg all their lives, beginning when it was a small mining town. Gloria and Scottie wanted to be able to pass on all the tales they heard and help people get a better understanding of Wickenburg’s past. With the encouragement of Scottie’s sister, Heather Taylor, Wickenburg Legends and Ghost Tours began. A typical tour begins at the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce, and continues on to other historic buildings and monuments around town. The tour makes stops at places such as the old Texas Hotel, Jail Tree and Calvary outpost. Gloria, “Madame Mariah� and Scottie, “Razin Kane� tell the tales of each building with spirit and enthusiasm. Adventure-seekers can choose from three stages of the tour. An introductory tour involves history and ghost stories, while the second stage focuses on ghost stories. The third tour is geared toward professional ghost hunters who want to search for spirits and ghosts with their own equipment.

She started in the business as an orphan girl, trained in the art to make money for the orphanage, and carried the craft throughout her adult life. It became something she did with pride and passion. This passion was passed down to her children and grandchildren, and now her grandson Victor Bedoian shares the beauty of handmade rugs with others through his rug store. A strong work ethic is also being passed down to Bedoian’s children and grandchildren at their coffee shop, Bedoian’s Bistro in downtown Wickenburg. The observation deck provides a panoramic view of the town of Yarnell (background, in photo above) and the site where the lives of 19 Granite Mountain Hot Shots were lost during a wildďŹ re on June 30, 2013. Fellow ďŹ reďŹ ghters from near and far continue to visit Granite Mountain Hotshot State Park to pay their respects and remember the lives of those killed in the Yarnell Hill Fire in 2013. The park opened about a year ago and hosts many hikers on a daily basis. The trail is challenging, but the views are amazing. Some ďŹ nd recreation here, while others hike for healing.

Every 600 feet, a polished granite memorial plaque shares a brave Granite Mountain Hotshots story and photo of one of the 19 hotshots. The climb is steep breathed their last. and rocky and gains 1,200 feet in elevation with 5% to 8% JUDGHV DQG PRUH WKDQ VWDLUV FDUYHG LQ WKH ERXOGHU ÀHOGV On June 30, 2013, the lightning-caused Yarnell Hill Fire Interpretive signs and benches are found along the way. At the 2.85-mile mark, hikers stop and read the story of raged out of control, burned into the town of Yarnell, and dethe Yarnell Hill Fire and study the timeline to learn how the stroyed 129 structures. Hikers are encouraged to pack plenty of water for themselves and their dogs, and pick up after themselves and their furry friends. Weather conditions may change during an outing, so plan ahead with proper clothing and footwear. To reach the trail head from Wickenburg, take US 93 north. Just past Wickenburg Ranch, stay to the right to merge onto Highway 89 north toward Congress. Beyond Congress, the highway splits and winds up the side of Yarnell Hill. As you near the top of the hill, look for an opportunity to turn left and
intersect with the southbound lanes. The trail head will appear on the right in a short distance. If you reach Yarnell, you’ve gone too far, but you can always stop for a bite to eat or browse through unique antique stores before you hike. For more information visit azstateparks.com or FDOO 0<3$5.6

Wickenburg is steeped in history, and for visitors curious about schooldays of times past, Garcia Little Red Schoolhouse is the place to see. Located in front of the Bashas’ plaza at 245 N. Tegner St., the schoolhouse has been standing at the site since 1905 when townspeople raised $1,600 and constructed the quaint, manicured piece of Americana presently standing. Garcia schoolhouse has retired from its usefulness as a schoolhouse and is now home of the Wickenburg Children’s cultural Organization (WCO), offering piano, viola and violin lessons for children (and the occasional adult). Those who visit the little schoolhouse can’t help but notice its immaculate condition due to the love and care of volunteers who clean and maintain it. Visit Henry Wickenburg’s historic home If founding father Henry Wickenburg could see his town today, he would undoubtedly be pleased. After all, it was he who according to historical accounts discovered gold in this area, and later gave root to the town by donating 160 acres deeded to him by President Rutherford B. Hayes. In addition to providing the land to establish the town, the German immigrant granted the railroad an easement so tracks could be laid, was a judge, a postmaster, a census taker, and sat on the school board. In addition, he was a member of the Seventh Territorial Legislature for Arizona. Our founding father also served on the claims committee, roads and ferries committee and the mining committee, according to Wickenburg Historical Preservation Society (WHPS) President Cindy Thrasher. Wickenburg’s small home still stands at 225 S. Washington St. In 1903 Wickenburg built the three-room house by the railroad tracks. He lived there until his death by a gunshot wound to the head in 1905. $OWKRXJK LW ZDV DVVXPHG WKH ZRXQG ZDV VHOI LQà LFWHG WKHUH was plenty of motive for murder. Some never believed he shot himself, and the controversy over whether or not Wickenburg was murdered remains to this day. Many say that Wickenburg died penniless – a motive for suicide. But according to Thrasher, he and early pioneer Jack Swilling had claims to mines in Black Canyon
City, and shortly before he died Wickenburg had sold them for $25,000. Angela Hutchison Hammer, who was a journalist in Wickenburg’s time, wrote: “Henry Wickenburg was murdered and nobody did anything about it.â€? Dr. Charles Genung, a friend and business associate of Wickenburg’s never believed he committed suicide. “Be aware that Henry Wickenburg was not capable of suicide,â€? stated Genung, “and I defy anybody who thinks so.â€? After his death, the house stood vacant until 1913, when it was sold to John and Mary Boetto, Italian immigrants who settled in Wickenburg in 1903. Mary died in the house in 1945, and John SDVVHG LQ )RU PDQ\ \HDUV WKH KRXVH DQG :LFNHQEXUJ¡V nearby gravesite fell into disrepair. Then in 2006, the Town of Wickenburg sold it to the WHPS, including eight acres that included the cemetery where Wickenburg was buried. Both properties have been restored and placed on the National Registry of Historic Places and the painstaking work on Wickenburg’s house earned the Governor’s Heritage Honor Award (one FHUWLĂ€ FDWH JLYHQ WR WKH :+36 DQG RQH JUDQWHG WR 7KUDVKHU SHUVRQ ally), and the Project of the Year Award. Step inside the depot for a look around and pick up a Walking Tour *XLGH. This helpful little pamphlet includes a map of hisWRULF GRZQWRZQ :LFNHQEXUJ and 31 points of interest, all within easy walking distance of the depot. The building houses a dry cleaner and laundry service now, but it’s easy to see the original bricks and imagine the hitching rail out front. The old livery stable around the other side of the block was built in 1890 and today houses several businesses along Tegner Street. With the help of the guide, the discerning eye can still make out the angle of the building’s corners, which was transformed
from livery stable to car dealership and gas station as times changed. You’re sure to meet lots of friendly faces inside the modern day shops and restaurants found all along the way as you enjoy your walking tour. Some other friendly faces are those of the painted bronzes along the sidewalks. These folks represent actual people in early Wickenburg. Start out with the school teacher near the depot. Having just stepped off the train in Wickenburg, she is looking GRZQ WKH VWUHHW KRSLQJ WR À QG KHU ZD\ WR WKH VFKRRO DQG the family she will be staying with as she takes on her new job.
