I

t was a quiet statement made during a quick exchange with a reporter about 45 minutes before kickoff Sept. 22 in Folsom.

Would Anthony Kerrigan play against Vista Del Lago?

“He will,” Placer coach Joey Montoya said. “And we’re a different offense when he’s on the field.”

Placer then went out and made a much larger statement, taking down the Eagles on Vista’s homecoming, in Vista’s new stadium, 43-28 to improve to 4-1 heading into the bye week before Pioneer Valley League play begins.

It wasn’t just the offense scoring, it was how the offense scored. In a game that featured more than 800 combined yards of total offense, Placer never punted. It didn’t require Vista mistakes and short fields; instead, the Hillmen never began a possession beyond their own 35-yard line, and they marched down the field every single time.

They also converted on four fourthdown attempts in the first half, starting with a fourth-and-four at the 50 on their opening possession after the Eagles had hit a big pass play to go up 8-0.

Michael Stuck found his favorite target, Travis Warren, on an out route for eight yards to pick up the first down.

It seemed an innocuous play at the

time, but the blueprint had been written for how Friday’s game would go.

“I want to get back to calling the game with my gut and my heart,” Montoya said.

“We took calculated risks that we saw on film. When you have a team that you know can execute, you make those calls with confidence.”

Having senior star Kerrigan back certainly seemed to fill the team with confidence, even if he still wasn’t fully healthy.

“That was him at 80 percent,” Montoya said. “Imagine when he gets to 100 percent. He’s the sparkplug that our offense needed.”

If Kerrigan was the sparkplug, Mario Perez was the engine — and he was a hemi.

Perez carried the ball 29 times for 197 yards, including a pair of one-yard scores, the second on the last play of the first half on — what else? — fourth down.

“Mario is just Mr. Dependable for us,” Montoya said. “He’s a guy we can always rely on, a guy we know is going to run like a senior bulldozer.”

He bulldozed the Eagles, hammering into the center of the line over and over again. They stopped him — a few times — but the Eagles couldn’t bring him down on crucial third and fourth downs.

“We were trying to find a way to get some stops,” Vista coach Mike Struebing

said. “We missed some tackles. Just got to find a way to make a play. We have to make a play when it’s there.”

Nothing typified the game — for both teams — like Placer’s extra-point attempt early in the fourth quarter following a touchdown that finally gave the Hillmen a two-score cushion in the back-andforth affair.

The score was 34-20, and Placer lined up for a Ryan Meyer extra point. But the snap was errant, the ball rolling away from the holder. Meyer scooped it up and looked to run it in around the left side.

He had no chance. He was about to be obliterated by a cadre of Eagles. So he jumped a bit and tossed the ball maybe two yards total over one rusher’s outstretched hands to Perez, who caught it and ran untouched into the end zone for two points.

Just the way Montoya drew it up.

Oh, no, wait, that’s the way M.C. Escher would have drawn it up.

But the key to getting to that point was simply that Placer had, twice, forced Vista to punt.

In this game, punts were like turnovers.

Placer never punted.

The Hillmen had the ball four times in the first half. They scored four touchdowns. Vista also had the ball four times — but it scored only three.

Hence, Placer’s 28-20 halftime lead.

Placer had the first possession of the third quarter and again drove the length of the field.

But, facing fourth and four from Vista’s 13, Marshall Chapman was wrestled down at the 10.

Kicking a field goal there, to give Placer a 3120 lead, “crossed my mind,” Montoya said, “but I felt like we could execute it.”

Who could blame him? They’d been executing it all night.

“We had a blown assignment mistake,” he said. “Had we not had a miscommunication up front, we should have scored on that play.

“We wanted to be aggressive. We felt like we had the game plan, and the kids were executing it.”

Chapman had a solid game — 18 carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns — that on any other day would have made him the game’s No. 1.

On Friday, he was a violin in the orchestra.

But the Hillmen’s defense rose up and forced Vista into its second punt, giving the ball back to an offense that just would not be stopped.

Kerrigan finished with 151 total yards and a pair of receiving touchdowns.

Stuck was a solid 8-for-9 passing for 132 yards and the two scores to Kerrigan. Favorite target Travis Warren had five catches for 60 yards.

“I thought it was (Stuck’s) best game,” Montoya said. “I thought he managed the game perfectly. His timing was great. His footwork was good. All the things we had been working on with him. He really has shown some growth.”

Vista was nearly as potent — star back Dominick Norris ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries — but the low carry total exemplified Vista’s problem: Placer held a more-than-two to one edge in time of possession.

“That’s the game we’ve gotten the last four years from them, and that’s how it’s gone every year,” Struebing said. “We have a great deal of respect for how they go about things.”

Placer (4-1) moves into its PVL bye week a game behind front-running Colfax and Bear River, but the Hillmen get their crack at Colfax on Oct. 6 at LeFebvre Stadium in Auburn.

“We’re going to play a confident team that has had a lot of success,” Montoya said. “Any time you have a rivalry game, doesn’t matter if you’re 5-0 or 0-5, we’re going to get their best.”

Placer will certainly be aware of Colfax quarterback Ryland Heimann and the variety of weapons the Falcons put on the field.

“It’s going to be a great challenge for us. The kids are looking forward to it,” Montoya said. “Many of the PVL offenses are going to put any defense in the PVL in conflict.

“When we get Anthony (Kerrigan) back at 100 percent, it adds an element to our defense that hasn’t been there all year. I’m proud of our secondary. They’ve made some big strides. They’re getting better and better each week.”
