F

olsom gained its newest all-encompassing restaurant, Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar, last month in the Palladio and community couldn’t be more excited.

With a scratch kitchen, cooks trained for all allergies and a menu to impress, this new restaurant is sure to please.

Scott Shaffer, market partner of Northern California with Lazy Dog, said every day is a party; even the staff has as much fun as the guests.

The restaurant’s concept came from founder Chris Simms, who has a cabin in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

“Chris used to visit there a lot and that’s where the cabin-style comes from,” Shaffer said. “We are a helpout team because in a small town like that, you rely on your neighbors. That’s how we teach our staff — they all help each other and work together.”

From fresh wok dishes to wood-fire pizza creations, sandwiches to bison meatloaf, the menu is all-encompassing for any member of the family to find something they’ll enjoy.

Shaffer said during the restaurant’s five mock trial days for friends and family before officially opening, the southwest fried chicken has been the most popular.

“We are community oriented,” he said. “During the five practice runs, we offered for our guests to donate to Folsom’s Hope. We raised between $3,000-$3,500 in just the 12 hours we were open so far. Everyone was very generous.”

Shaffer said Lazy Dog is a great place to come in and have a good time. Sit in the large bar area with open seating, or find your place in a comfy booth, whichever you decide, it’ll be well-worth it. ✶

Trick or treat on Sutter Street FESTIFALL BRINGS HALLOWEEN FUN TO HISTORIC FOLSOM STORY AND PHOTOS BY BILL SULLIVAN

It’s almost time to dress up the little ones in their Halloween gear and head to Historic Folsom for trick-or-treating from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28 throughout WHEN: 1-4 P.M. OCT. 28 Sutter Street in the Historic District of Folsom. It’s known as FestiFall and this year WHERE: HISTORIC FOLSOM the event is set to be even bigger and better than last year’s Trick-Or-Treat Street.

CONTACT: 916-985-7452 Trick or treaters should watch for participating merchant signs throughout the district that will be handing out treats for the costumed little ones.

In addition to the trick or treating, the day will feature a number of fun activities this year. Bayside Church of Folsom has teamed up with the Folsom Historic District this year to present a safe and fun day for families just before Halloween.

“The historic district merchants are so excited that Bayside Folsom chose the historic district for their FestiFall this year,” said Judy Collinsworth, historic district manager. “It will be a super fun day for families!”

At 2 p.m., Cynthia’s Dance Center will be presenting a preview of Annie on the Amphitheater Stage. Cast members are from 4 years old and up. Come out and enjoy the family entertainment.

At 2:30 p.m. the Mad Science Show will also happen at the amphitheater.

Following at 3 p.m. is a costume contest for the kids at the amphitheater also presented by Cynthia’s Dance Center and at 4 p.m. kids will get their wiggles out at the bounce house, obstacle course and rock wall, and more fun will happen at the Sutter and Wool street lot presented by Bayside Church of Folsom.

From 5 to 6:30 p.m., enjoy a family friendly concert at the amphitheater stage also presented by Bayside Church of Folsom.

3 FALL FUN FESTIVALS AT THE TOWN CENTER

BY RACHEL ZIRIN | PHOTOS ARE COURTESY TO THE ENTERTAINER Fall is a beautiful time of year where the leaves change colors and fall off the trees, the air is cool and crisp, and scarves and sweaters are encouraged. It’s an enjoyable time of year, so why not have a fall-themed festival? Or a fall carnival? The El Dorado Hills Town Center will be the home of three special and fun event this fall and everyone is invited.

1. FALL FESTIVAL

Hands4Hope, an outreach and learning nonprofit organization that teaches youth how to be civic minded leaders, will be hosting their first Fall Festival in the El Dorado Hills Town Center on Oct 14 and 15.

TOWN CENTER BLVD., EL DORADO HILLS Partnering with the Town Center, this event is sure to please guests of all ages. With an animal exploration CONTACT: edhtowncenter.com. area, hay maze, hay rides, costume contests and more, this two-day festival will raise funds for the local nonprofit to do what they do best.

“The funds will go towards helping Hands4Hope continue current youth development and outreach programs, and allow the creation of new programs as well,” said Cecile Wu, a member of the marketing and fundraising committee for the festival.

“Therefore, the funds will go toward aiding the community and providing service to people in need around the area.”

As one of the largest fundraisers for Hands4Hope, they will be helping the homeless and collecting blankets, food and more. Natalie Buerki, marketing director for Town Center said this event is special because this event is unique to Hands4Hope.

“Nonprofits are getting so creative with the ways they raise funds and awareness,” she said. “Not only do they help the community and the homeless, but they are teaching the youth. Some kids who grow up in this area are privileged and to see them getting involved and going out of town to see these things, it is amazing.”

Wu said guests can look forward to a fun, family-oriented day of festivities and fall spirit.

Wu works with Hands4Hope’s homeless committee with the goal of serving the homeless in surrounding areas.

“We have a special outreach where we go to Loaves and Fishes, a center to aid homeless in Sacramento, and hand out sack lunches,” she said. “To spend a day there, talking with people, it is honestly a feeling that cannot be fully described; everyone needs to feel it for themselves. It’s very warming.

Wu said helping others, especially those who are struggling, has been one of the best experiences for her.

“It’s so nice to see that I put a smile on someone’s face, because everyone deserves that,” she said. “To have such an impact on people, sometimes the simplest things show me that I could really make a difference in the world with kindness and compassion.”

2. FALL CARNIVAL

With more than 40 years dedicated to the creation of fairs and festivals, Butler Amusements will once again be bringing their expertise back to El Dorado Hills Oct. 12 through Oct.15. This brand new Fall Carnival will include thrilling rides and fun for all ages.

Natalie Buerki, marketing director for Town Center, said since the community loves the spring carnival so much, they decided to kick it off in the fall as well.

“This carnival is for all ages,” she said. “It’s something everyone in the community can come to enjoy and have a good time.”

With a new location this year next to Mercedes Benz of El Dorado Hills, you won’t be able to miss the neon lights from Highway 50.

“The community can look forward to doing really fun activities that are geared toward the fall. We will have some new things to do such as a petting zoo and a hay maze.”

For more than 10 years, the El Dorado Hills Town Center has hosted the Halloween Spooktacular for kids and adults of all ages.

“There are five categories — cutest, scariest, most creative, hero/villain or princess as well as best family or group,” she said. “The person who wins in each category will get a prize.”

The Folsom Historical Society presents their sixth annual wine tasting event, History UnWined, from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 15,

Bring your furry friend to the 15th annual Bark ‘n’ Splash Bash for the time of their life.

This unique event provides a social and recreational outlet for dogs and their owners, said Lesley Miller, of the Folsom Parks and Recreation Department.

Dogs will be able to play and swim in two separate pools. One is shallow and one has a deeper base to plunge into, she said.

Dogs are allowed to swim and frolic in the center’s activity pool, which features a pooch-pleasing play structure and sloped beach-style entry into the water, Miller said. For water-shy pups, there’s abundant lawn for romping, lounging and socializing.

“They can run on the grass or play fetch in the water,” Miller said. “It depends what the dogs are into. Owners should be aware their dogs won’t be going home dry.”

Once dogs are let inside the gate, owners can remove their leash and let the fun begin.

“Each year, every dog leaves and just crashes once they get into the car,” Miller said. “It is a great way to tire out your dog.”

This event is strictly for dogs only and people are not allowed to go into the pool during the event, except up to their ankles, she said. Additionally, there will be lifeguards on duty the whole time.

“This event is a fun alternative for those who don’t have kids and wouldn’t necessarily go to our other events,” Miller said.

“It is a good opportunity for them to socialize.”

At the event there will be a number of dog vendors handing out samples which include Sparkles, Folsom Dog Resort, Veterinary Healing Center of Folsom and Folsom Animal Service will be on site.

Every owner is required to bring writing proof of their current animal license for their dog(s). The Folsom Animal Service (FAS) will be checking licenses and no dog will be let in until written proof is shown.

Folsom residents who need to purchase or renew their dog’s license prior to the event may do so from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at Folsom City Hall.

FAS will also have staff on site to provide rabies vaccinations, licenses and microchip implants, Miller said.

Tickets for this event are not sold in advance. Owners and dogs should arrive ahead of time to start the check in process. Once paper work is approved, owners will be able to pay for their dog’s entry and go inside.

Tickets are $10 at the door only for dogs. Human companions are free, Miller said.

“I am excited about this event itself,” Miller said. “It is so fun to see the dogs have a good time and the owners having an equally good time. It is a feel good fun event.”

After the event, the pool will be drained, sanitized and inspected as standard post-season procedure, Miller said. ✶

Dick has four daughters, and he is proud to say they are all involved in the vineyard and tasting room business. He is also an accomplished musician and has spent his lifetime singing and playing country music throughout Amador and the surrounding counties.

The Cooper property is about 158 acres of which 90 acres are under vine with plantings of 17 different varietals. About 40 percent of the crop is sold to about 22 other wineries with the No. 1 prized varietal being Barbera, of course.

Cooper-grown Barbera, produced by about a half-dozen wineries, have been responsible for almost all the top gold or Best of Show medals at Los Angeles County Fair, California State Fair, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, and several other competitions in recent years.

The family’s grape growing expertise is manifested in its portfolio of award-winning wines.

They produce small quantities of artfully crafted wines that span the tradition of Italian and Rhône varietals, dessert wines, heirloom varietals and a few special blends.

This treat is not only for people with a sweet tooth — there are also savory options. For the shop’s soft opening, their menu consists of strawberries ‘n’ cream, s’mores, that’s raz!, apple pie a la mode, as well as cereal ‘n’ milk, maple vanilla bacon and more. Lee said as they plan to add more savory items such as ham and cheese, cheese and olives and more.

Along with their main product, they will be bringing some items they sell at their original store such as doissants, their version of a cronut, and their croissant poppers. The couple will also serve coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cider and cold brews.

Khamphay said they chose to set up shop on Sutter Street because Folsom is a great town with a growing community and they thought it would be a fun area.

“The atmosphere we want our customers to experience is a fun, family-oriented space,” Khamphay said. “We want people to be able to enjoy the food and have a cool area to relax with family.”

Lee said she encourages people to come try their shop because it’s something unique and there isn’t really anything like it nearby.

“I think we’re one of the few places in the United States that has this and it is pretty awesome and exciting,” she said.

“We loved it, so we’re hoping that our customers love it too.” ✶

A

fter Labor Day, there’s an area in the foothills that begins bustling with activity. It’s known as Apple Hill, stretching from the upper region of Placerville and into Camino.

Now with autumn in full swing, it is the perfect time of year to load the family up and head to country that is right in Folsom’s backyard. Enjoy all sorts of fun, wholesome activity along with great eats and treats.

“Apple Hill farms have been a great day trip for people for more than 50 years,” said Robyn Delfino, marketing chairperson of the Apple Hill Growers Association, whose family has been ranching in the area for decades.

“People keep coming back.”

In 2016, it is estimated that more than a million people made a visit to Apple Hill for the season runs from Labor Day weekend till December. While the area draws its share of locals, it draws a large amount of visitors from the far reaches of California, including the Bay Area.

It’s this large attraction that not only benefits the many farms and surrounding businesses in nearby El Dorado County, but also makes a dent in the form of tourism into Folsom.

“We are very fortunate in Folsom to have our neighboring communities offering amenities that are so different and complimentary to what we have here,” said Mary Ann McAlea, senior vice president of the Folsom Chamber of Commerce.

“Apple Hill has become an annual tradition for many people from the greater Bay Area and we are proud for the opportunity to showcase our region. We encourage visitors to enjoy the wonderful experiences available at the orchards and wineries of El Dorado County. And, of course, a visit to Folsom will make it a perfect day.”

The numbers tell the tale that Apple Hill is clearly one of the region’s most significant tourist destinations. The area is known for its rural ambiance and tasty products that extend well beyond that of just apples. This consists of 55 member ranches that include the largest concentration of apple growers in California of 25 farms featuring 16 different varieties of apples and various other fruits. It’s not all just fruit when you visit, its 13 different bake shops packed with tasty homemade pies, caramel apples, dumplings and more. The area is home to 10 different wineries, 14 Christmas tree farms, a day spa and more than 50 different special events during the season.

As you travel up Carson Road just out of Placerville, one of the many different farms you will see early on your trip will be Abel’s Apple Acres. Evelyn Abel has been selling apples and treats from her roadside ranch near her home since 1976.

She began selling apples straight out of the box alongside the road in the early years. Now four generations of family continue the tradition right alongside her at the place where many travel from afar for her famous buttermilk apple pie.

“It seems like yesterday when we first started really,” Abel said. “I look forward to it every year. It’s great to see all of the families come out and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The kids love it no matter where they travel from.

It’s good wholesome fun and we need that these days.”

Apple Hill traditionally opens on Labor Day weekend. The area is bustling with activity up until the Christmas holiday. October is one of the greatest times of the year to visit the area as the fall colors are abundant, the air is cool and crisp and there are pumpkin patches, craft vendors, petting barns and fun activities for the kiddos. When Thanksgiving hits, the Christmas tree farms open their gates and the area is ready to provide you with a fresh holiday tree, complete with the thrill of cutting it yourself fresh in the woods.

“When we hit the busy time of the season we have as many as 50 employees working,” said Abel’s son Kevin Ames, who works at the ranch along with family members. “If you’re a member of this family, you work here during the season. It’s pretty simple and we all love it. One of the best times of the year to come up here is in October when fall is in full swing.

In addition to the great eats and the ingredients to make your own special treats, the Apple Hill Farms have many great products beyond the apple alone. The association has its very own cookbook that can be purchased at various locations. Many of the member farms host craft vendors and special events for the whole family to enjoy. From Johnny Appleseed Day celebrations to fishing, pony rides, hay rides and amazing mazes, no youngster or young at heart will find themselves bored in this form of nature’s playground.

So how does one plan a trip to the Apple Hill farms? To each their own as everyone has their own desires and styles. One of the most traditional ways to tour the area is through the official Apple Hill map that details all of the member farms in the area.

“Part of the fun of Apple Hill farms is searching out the farms and finding your favorite,” Delfino said. “They’ve all got a lot of tourist attraction.”

Mikuni Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar is coming up on their one year anniversary in Folsom on Nov. 7 and owner Taro Arai has nothing but kind words of appreciation.

Since the beginning, Mikuni has been a favorite for Folsom and El Dorado Hills residents. Arai planned on opening a location in Folsom for a long time. Arai said he had many requests from Folsom resident customers to open up a closer location where they live.

Arai heard them and that is exactly what he did.

Arai said the Folsom location has been exceeding his expectations and has been wildly successful, pulling in as successful as his other locations.

“It has been doing much better than we expected,” he said “I’m very appreciative to the people of Folsom. We have been selling good fish, good sake, and I’m very impressed.”

The best selling dishes in Folsom are all over the board, but the exuberantly sold rolls include the Benjamin roll, the Marilyn Monroll, the Incredible roll and the Kaiser roll.

Arai said the only thing he would change about his Folsom restaurant would be to make it larger. He is still surprised about the massive response he has received from Folsom customers.

This will be the final location in the Sacramento area, he said.

Not only has it been one year since the opening of the Folsom location, but Arai recently celebrated 30 years in business.

During the celebration, Arai gave away a car and had his own crafted bourbon, which is available at Mikuni restaurants.

Each year, Arai creates his own alcohol, but in a different style. One year, he made a beer, another he made sake. Next time, Arai said he plans to create his own tequila.

“I believe in kaizen and to keep on kaizening,” Arai said. “For me, the Folsom store is just the beginning. We are just starting the engine.”

Arai’s goal is to have 50 Mikuni locations by the 50th anniversary, and so far, he is off to a good start.

In February of next year, his next location will be opening in Concord.

“If that location does well, then we are going to explode in the Bay Area,” he said.

“After that, we will be expanding out-of-state. I am too excited for everything.”

Arai’s favorite thing about his restaurants is as they are growing, they get to help others, he said.

In the past, Arai donated $1 million to the Breast Cancer Navigator Program, and has an infusion center named after the restaurant at the Sutter Medical Center in Downtown Sacramento.

Arai said when he is not working, he trying to make a difference for others. He said he personally caters for people and all the funds go to charity, as well as all of the profits from his annual golf tournament.

“To be able to make a difference in the community, I wouldn’t be able to do it without all of my customers,” Arai said. “Doing something to help others is what I love most about it.

I am so appreciative of God for this opportunity and all of the customers in the region for helping us,” Arai said. “The customers have helped us do so many great things.” ✶ 36 | FOLSOM LAKE ENTERTAINER

GH WOODWORKS BRINGS HANDMADE FURNISHINGS TO FOLSOM

BY RACHEL ZIRIN | PHOTOS BY BILL SULLIVAN Gene and Dani Hise opened their new shop GH Woodworks on Sutter Street in Folsom and the creations are endless. From farm tables to outdoor furniture, every item is handcrafted from sand to seal.

Gene, a licensed contractor, has been in finished carpentry for more than 30 years. After building some farm tables for his daughter’s wedding, party guests sparked his idea to start his own business building and selling handmade items and furniture.

With help from his wife, Dani, they are a duo-force to be reckoned with. Gene builds, and Dani finishes, sands, stains and paints.

Gene said his favorite kinds of wood to work with are those that have a story.

“I love wood that is being repurposed or has history,” he said. “I don’t have a favorite thing to build, but if it has a story, I enjoy working with it.”

Along with the many items on the showroom floor, the couple said they are always open to ideas and custom orders from customers.

“I really enjoy creating new products with the customers,” he said. “Ideas start to fly when they see items on the showroom floor. They may not see the item they are looking for, but we are always open to new ideas.”

With competitive prices, nothing says one-of-a-kind as something made by hand from a local resident.

Dani said her favorite thing about the shop so far is all of the customers.

“It’s fun because you get to meet all of the people who come in,” she said. “Everyone has been so nice and supportive. They have been giving such positive feedback and they want us to succeed. That was the biggest surprise.”

Gene also mentioned he really enjoyed chatting with the customers and learning new things to make.

“I always want to build new things,” he said. “I am a Pinterest freak. I know that sounds weird, but I love Pinterest. It helps me build things that are relevant to what people want and then I put my own spin on it. There is always something new and that is the best thing about woodwork — you are always learning new techniques and ideas.” ✶

BY MICHELE SMITH | PHOTOS ARE SPECIAL TO THE ENTERTAINER All of us that love our wine have seem many, many times the words “family owned” on a wine label or advertisement. That was the way all wineries once were; families working together to produce both craft and a way of life. But, in these past few decades, large companies have made it increasingly difficult for small wineries to compete. However, there are still those folks who won’t give up their dream just because it is difficult. Introducing the Fiests.

Tony and Susan Fiest met as students at UC Berkeley. From the start, they both felt that their future would be defined by creativity and a deep commitment to family. They spent another decade in Berkeley exploring career options and acquiring three children and a dog, then decided to pick up shop and move to Amador County.

Initially, they worked together running one of the finest restaurants in the Gold Country, but, there was still a longing for something of their own. And slowly, that love became Fiest Wines. Dragging the kids (and often the dog) along from vineyard to vineyard, they made relationships with some of the finest growers in the region.

True to the traditional grapes of the Sierra Foothills, the initial focus was on robust Zinfandels and Barberas, along the way adding a classic Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignon and one of the finest Viogniers produced in California.

The wines they initially produced quickly gained high praise from consumers and critics alike.

“We were amazed how well our wines were received,” Susan said, remembering those early years.

“It was overwhelming, we had heard that most wineries always have too much wine, and here we are not having enough. It was an amazing blessing.”

With the popularity of Fiest Wines growing and living in beautiful and charming Amador City, a tasting room seemed an almost required next step.

“Amador City is a unique place,” commented Tony. “Why not bring some unique wine and great music to this town?”

And, that they have indeed. The tasting room is comfortable, elegant and relaxing. Most weekends the beauty of the wines is complimented by a great band or Tony (quite the guitarist), or simply the laughter of people having a great time.

There are several other tasting rooms in Amador City. In fact, we found you can make a day (and even an evening) of it without getting in your car. One other neat fact that was found is while Amador City is not as famous to California folks as many others, it is the smallest incorporated city in the state. Good people, good wine, and good music. Certainly, worth a visit. Many visitors find it hard to leave. ✶

VINO DE LOS MUERTOS AT BORJÓN WINERY Vino de los Muertos

BY MICHELE SMITH | PHOTOS ARE SPECIAL TO THE ENTERTAINER Fall is in the air and while many have enjoyed the wonderful harvest events in the Amador and El Dorado counties While winery holiday events are still a couple of months off, there is one annual event that stands out in particular, and that is the annual Vino de los Muertos event at Borjón Winery.

As similar to most wine events, attendees must be 21 years old or older, and this unique one is a fun wine event with a Halloween theme. Vinos de los Muertos originated as a celebration of life and reminder of our mortality, but this certainly is an occasion not to be missed. Leave the kids at home and head out to Borjón for some adult fun. Event attendees can enjoy winetasting, a live DJ where you can dance the night away and enjoy a fun costume contest. Tickets are limited however, so do not wait until last minute and purchase them. Please note: There is no physical ticket and you can select hold for pickup.

For those who are not able to attend Vinos De Los Muertos, Borjón Winery is open 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Thursday through Monday. Borjón Winery is one of the few wineries in Amador County that offers food options at Nora’s kitchen; the family owned onsite bistro. If you are visiting the area, this is a great stop if you don’t bring a picnic lunch, as visitors can enjoy mouth-watering tacos and sensational salsa (but that is not all — think carne asada burritos, nachos, and much, much, more). The food is also a great pairing with Borjón Winery’s fabulous reds — many recommend the Tempranillo to accompany the fresh tamales.

There is another little known secret about Borjón Winery, and it is that the winery offers onsite lodging. Yes, you can not only wine taste, but stay overnight to wake up in beautiful Amador wine country.

The overnight accommodation, La Casa, is a vacation rental located on the west end of the Borjón Winery property. The private residence sleeps up to six adults and offers three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths. The property is in walking distance to wineries (a three-mile radius) and is perfect whether you want to walk, bike or drive. Guests must book a two-night minimum and the current rate is $350 per night for the 1,600-square-foot

home. Also, meals are not provided, however, there are a plethora of restaurant options available and lucky guests are also in walking distance of Nora’s Kitchen. ✶

BY ENTERTAINER STAFF A Harvest Faire, hosted by Ione Business and Community Association, will celebrate fall with free and family-friendly events.

Giant Pumpkin Contest, scarecrow contest, Chalk the Walk, dog costume contest and vendor booths are all on the events schedule.

Pumpkin growers bring larger pumpkins each year to the Giant Pumpkin Contest. Last year’s winning biggest pumpkin weighed in at more than 1,100 pounds. The cash prize for the heaviest pumpkin is $1,000 for the winning adult, 18 and over, and $500 is the prize for the kids’ age group. weirdest and best decorated/ carved are the other categories available for bragging rights. For contestants who do not to take their pumpkin home, it will be donated to Preston Castle’s Halloween Haunt.

For the scarecrow contest, you can build your own and drop it off or you can build one the morning of the faire. Supplies are provided.

It’s six nights dedicated to the strong hearted who seek the opportunity to experience fear in its greatest form inside a real castle that has long been rumored to be haunted in many tales told by locals. Actor Rob Lowe recently featured Preston Castle on his History Channel show, the “Lowe Files,” that highlights famous locations that are haunted or rumored to have spirits about.

Preston Castle was formerly the Preston School of Industry, one of the oldest and best known reform schools in the United States. The institution was opened in June of 1894 when seven wards were transferred from San Quentin State Prison to reside in this 50,000-square-foot structure that is home to the most Romanesque revival architecture in the Gold Country.

In 1960, the juvenile prison and its 13-acre surroundings were vacated when new buildings were constructed to better serve the purpose of juvenile housing. The abandoned building was then named a California Register of Historic Places.

In 2014, the State of California deeded the castle and a few of the adjoining buildings and property to the Preston Castle Foundation. The Preston Castle Foundation hosts a number of events to raise funds to assist in ongoing restoration efforts of the property. Preston Castle Haunt is one such event.

With lots of planning and time dedicated by volunteers over several months, the Preston Castle Foundation welcomes anyone and everyone who dares to enter. As they put it, “prepare to have the wits scared out of you.” Over the last few years many new faces have come out to attend the event and many have returned year after year as well.

“We laughed, cried and screamed and to this day we wonder if that figure we saw at the top of the stairs was real or part of the show,” said visitor Jill Gillette.

ROBBEN FORD IS ‘BRINGING IT BACK HOME’

BY MATTHEW WHITLEY | PHOTO BY MASCHA MUENZESHEIMER As a Northern California teen from Ukiah, Robben Ford grew up heading into San Francisco for a steady diet of the hottest names in music performing in the late ‘60s, early ‘70s, including the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Santana, B.B King, John Mayall, Led Zeppellin and many others. While playing with his band in a small bar in Palo Alto, he was picked up by blues legend Jimmy Witherspoon who WHEN: 7:30 P.M. Fast forward nearly 40 years later and today Robben Ford is considered one of the preeminent blues, jazz and rock guitarists in the music world.

WHAT WAS IT ABOUT ELVIN BISHOP AND MIKE BLOOMFIELD THAT FLIPPED A SWITCH? I think there are several factors. The most salient aspect I would say was the ferocious energy, the youthful passion and energy of the musicians and the music and it was also an integrated band, so it wasn’t just white faces and mike Bloomfield was literally the first electric blues virtuoso. There was no precedent for Mike Bloomfield — no one had played the (expletive) out of a guitar like that in that way; Across the pond, in England, Eric Clapton and John Mayall and the Blues Breakers there was a lineage simultaneously going on there — neither was the product of the other — so that was some interesting synchronicity. A lot of amazing things about that time you know … I think it was important that I was introduced to the blues through an integrated band. I couldn’t be Chuck Berry, but I could be mike Bloomfield.

TWO OF YOUR MAJOR INFLUENCES WERE ROGER CALLOWAY AND TOM SCOTT, WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THEIR MUSICIANSHIP? I met them upon being invited to tour with Joni Mitchell. Tom Scott was sort of the music director and the group that he was a part of actually was — became known as The L.A. Express.

I joined the band. Tom and I became very close ... and these guys, they knew how to compose work, with orchestras , write for big band, strings, television and they were educated. And so just being around them, they were educating me and I learned more during that period of time with Joni Mitchell, about two years with those guys, than I have learned before or since. It was a marvelous time. So it wasn’t so much their music as it was their musicianship and their friendship, you know, just hanging out, playing I just sang it out to play do you think. It was just an awesome time.

WHAT WAS LIKE WORKING WITH JONI MITCHELL? well joni, for me will always be — is essentially — the greatest artist, certainly in pop music of the 20th century and to have gotten to work with her that intimately was a great honor. And she, of course, is a natural musician, never had any schooling but a true artist, a true creative force and an amazing voice, an amazing interpreter of songs — quite the good painter. was just lovely to work with — i never met a nicer person to be around. It was just very unique and special. I was hanging around very heavy company, very high energy, high creativity … just beautiful.

YOU WERE A PART OF GEORGE HARRISON’S DARK HORSE TOUR. WHAT WAS WORKING WITH HARRISON LIKE? Well, you know, George Harrison’s music is very simple compared to the music of Joni Mitchell. George is a great guy. The tour was kind of — it wasn’t really a great experience. There were a lot of great musicians but there was just a little bit too much pressure on him; he was very uncomfortable in a leader role; The only tour that he ever did, other than a few things, a little performance here and there. i think he did five shows in Japan with Eric Clapton like much later.

It didn’t have the cohesion that working with Joni did.

So it wasn’t really an education it was just sort of an experience that was, you know, that’s not my favorite experience even though you know it’s kind of a cool thing to find yourself working with a Beatle.

WHAT IS PLANNED FOR THE FOLKS COMING OUT TO SEE YOU AT THE HARRIS CENTER? Well, I actually have a new group so all new faces and the music for the most part will be new music as well, as of yet unreleased, and lot of it unrecorded. I’m working on a new project I’m very excited about it. I think they’re going to get a real kick out of this group. ✶

THINGS GOT ACRIMONIOUS AND MAYBE IT’S FAIR TO SAY YOUR TIME WITH THE EAGLES WAS THE BEST AND WORST OF TIMES. WOULD YOU DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN? You know I look back at that time and that combination of talent that was in that band for the 27 years that i was part of it — had just a magical combination of vocals, blended harmonies, of writing skills — lyrically and musically, ability to play and write and sing. we had five A-type personalities in that band and everybody had fronted their own band at one time or another, whether it was Walsh or me or Frey, there was just an enormous amount of talent there and I thought we were able to take everybody’s strong suit and make a some of the best records that were probably better than anything we would have conceived or thought about making with just the five of us. … Would I have done certain things differently? But what happened during that time is, I think, we produced some of the best music that the band ever made, millions of people around the world would agree based on record sales.

YOUR SONG, “HOTEL CALIFORNIA,” IS SO ICONIC, WHERE DO YOU GET

IDEAS FOR SONGS? I try to get out of the way of the creative process. When something’s coming out, I try not to get in its way.

Usually, like today, I’ll grab a cell phone and put it on record and just play. If I’m driving in the car, I’ll sing a melody, a chorus or a line into my phone and collect these bits and pieces and then finally i go into the studio when I have moments of inspiration and develop them. There’s a little skeleton of a frame for an idea for a song it needs to be — you have blow life into the idea, let it rise up and see what it is. Sometimes they turn into great masterpieces and sometimes they go away to digital heaven with the erase key … years ago like 1972, before, that was about all I did was work in the studio. Part of the song, “Life in the Fast Lane” I wrote in one of the studios back in Boston and we got there Joe (Walsh) said,’ I’ve got this lick’ and I said, ‘Well, I’ve got this lick and we started playing off each other like we had developed doing and next thing we got a track played called, “Life in the Fast Lane.” So, you know, it’s just a creative process that’s so captivating and mesmerizing to me. So I try to get out of the way and let those ideas come out and then go back and refine them in something

more elaborate. They come all different ways: lyrics and melody guitar line, a riff.

On “Hotel California” … when I was in the Eagles, i had to write specifically for that cast of characters. Imagine as a writer for a soap opera and you know how all the characters are, who’s the villain and who’s good, who’s the sleaze ball. So you got to write the drama to go in the characters. ...

I think if I learned anything and making records with the Eagles is that the more time you spend on attentiveness you spend on every note in the studio is how make really great sounding records that have some longevity.

WHAT’S PLANNED FOR THE HARRIS

CENTER SHOW? Well, we have a great time. When we do a show, we like to have a party.

Most of the time for the second half of the show people are standing up, dancing, taking video, taking their cell phones out — we just have a great time and everybody’s just really up in an upbeat mood. I do about 90 percent of the Eagle songs that I wrote and recorded and toured with those guys for the 27 years I was with the band. I do a salute to Stevie Ray Vaughn with a “Pride and Joy” version of my own, I do some solo material like “Heavy Metal,” “Hotel California,” “Hard Ache Tonight,” “Take it Easy” ... it’s a really, really fun night and I don’t know who has more fun, me or the audience. ✶

HARRISCENTER.NET, In 2014, director Martin Shore released the documentary, “Take Me to the River,” where he follows a recording session celebrating both the sounds of Memphis, particularly, Stax records but also, to pair the older generation of Memphis musicians, including Mavis Staples, Charlie Musselwhite, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Bobby Rush, William Bell along with younger artists including Snoop Dog, Frayser Boy and the North Mississippi All Stars. He also captures firsthand the musical history from artists who were there during its heyday before Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated ending their musical utopia. The film was a critical success and inspired the live show which will be playing here in Folsom at the Harris Center.

King of the Chitlin’ Circuit “Well, I got involved with it because that’s where I come from,” singer Bobby Rush said. “I’m known as the King of the Chitlin’ Circuit. The circuit is… because of the juke joints; they’d feed you chitlin’s — sometimes they had no place for you stay and nothing to eat while you was doin’ the circuit; so it’s something as whole black people come into contact with all they life. And I’m one of the few guys who came up that way — the hard way — with no money, sometimes (the club owners) didn’t pay you — you had to eat chitlin’s. You got a chitlin’ dinner and that’s what they feed you, what you get for pay. So that’s where the Chitlin’ circuit come in.”

Bobby Rush, Grammy and blues awards winner, an American blues singer, writer, musician, legend and member of the Blues Hall of Fame known for his funk infused blues show and has recorded more than 350 records, is one of Take Me to the River’s headliners. Rush who still at the age of 83 performs between 200 and 300 shows a year, shows no signs of slowing down. He was raised in

the south but moved with his preacher father to Chicago, Illinois’ south side. It was in Chicago that Rush would meet Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James and other blues artists who introduced Rush to the circuit.

For Bobby Rush, who starred in the film performing alongside Oscar-winning rapper, Frayser Boy, also performing on stage at the Harris Center, where they performed Rufus Thomas’ song, “Push and Pull,” believes that it falls to the older generation to pass on what they know to the next generation of artists.

“I think, now, being the Grammy winner and who I am, doing what I’m doing, if I look successful doing what I’m doing — people will follow the trend and will follow the torch that I’ve passed on what I was taught from B.B King, T-Bone Walker, Ray Charles, the whole bit,” Rush said. “Hopefully I will set a trend for people to follow me. So I got to be careful what I do and not do from now on because people are looking at me as a leader and I should demonstrate good leadership, so good people will follow me and pass it on down and keep the blues alive.”

BY PAT QUAN For me, after school starts in August, it seems like no time until it’s Halloween.

Then, before you know it, we’re all drinking eggnog, singing songs and visiting family in faraway places. Halloween is sort of the fall marker. Halloween is such a fun event. Is it really a holiday? Did you know that its origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain? Their new year started on Nov. 1, and this day marked the end of summer and the harvest, and began the dark, cold winter, often associated with human death. Wow. Cheers. How happy is that? A little more dramatic than my perception of the season’s change. Admit it — you thought it was originated by Hershey and Mars chocolate.

There are many fun ways to enjoy Halloween in our community. On Saturday, Oct. 28, Historic Folsom on Sutter Street has a Trick-or-Treat event from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. It will be lots of fun, but still missing that all-too-popular Night of 1,000 Pumpkins.

El Dorado Hills Town Center has the Spooktacular on Halloween that features trick-or-treating from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Town Center participating businesses.

At 5:15 p.m. in the Young Amphitheater, there will be a costume contest for kids.

And wait for it … dogs!

But then there’s the old-fashioned way. Gather your kids, walk your neighborhood, knock on doors and take your chances. Snickers or a whistle? A knowledgeable Realtor or a part-timer or rookie? As a listing agent working with sellers, your professional Realtor should discuss home conditions, comparison homes in neighborhood, preparing your home for sale and most importantly, negotiating on your behalf throughout the home sale process so the transaction ends in a successful close.

So is October real estate a trick or a treat? In Folsom, recent history suggests October can be a trick or a treat. It can tail off from summer or it can spike. In 2016, it was one of the lowest sales months of the year while in 2015, October sales spiked to one of the highest sales months of the year. At the time of this writing, there are only 157 homes on the market in Folsom, well below the number of homes for sale in previous Septembers. El Dorado Hills is a very different market. With a smaller population and a higher average sales price, October has more been a trick as the last three Octobers have continued to fall off from the summer numbers. The good news is those Octobers are very consistent from one October to the next October.
