ishop’s Pumpkin Farm is more than a pumpkin patch: It is a fall family tradition on a wide stretch of farmstead with corn, apple trees, hay bales, a bakery, a gift shop and yes, pumpkins — of all shapes and sizes. The 40-acre farm was started by Sandy and Bill Bishop in 1973 with a simple pumpkin patch on about an acre of land. Sandy Bishop was a teacher and wanted to allow kids the chance to visit a farm. “We never thought back then that it was going to be anything like this,” said Wayne Bishop, son of Bill and Sandy. From one patch of gourds to the festive and fun spectacle that it is today, the Bishop family has remained at the center. The farm is currently run by Ann and Wayne Bishop with their children, Meghan Sanderson and Austin Bishop with his wife, Chealsie, along with a fulltime staff of about six people. During
the September through November season (ends Nov. 5), the Bishops hire approximately 450 seasonal employees for food services, attractions, hay rides and the gift shop. This year, they expect 180,000 grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents and children to enjoy the many offerings of the farm. “Growing up on a pumpkin farm was pretty fun,” Sanderson said. “I spent a lot of days out here just running around and playing with the animals.” There are baby goats, donkeys, sheep, cows and a horse on the farm — some of which are participating in this season’s upgraded petting zoo. “The animals have moved in and seem to really love it already,” Sanderson said. During the spring season, the farm is open for a short time, but the main attractions are only available in the fall season. “We love getting to see all the people

who come back to see us year after year,” Sanderson said. Bishop said that two years ago it was too hot during October, and last year it was too wet. This year, it seems that there may be just the right combination of plump pumpkins and little hands eager to pick them. Every Saturday in October, there will be a movie night in the pumpkin field. The event is free, except for parking. Paint and Brunch, a new event where attendees can paint a fall-themed canvas while enjoying goodies from Mrs. B’s Bakery, is sold out. However, more dates may be added later this month. Check the Bishop Pumpkin Farm’s Facebook page for updates. Now in their 45th season, the Bishop family is eager for many familiar faces to walk through the open barn doors of the farm.
“We have generations coming back,” Sanderson said. “Grandparents who came here when they were kids are now bringing their own grandchildren. So I think it’s that longtime family connection that brings people back. It’s their farm.” Sanderson said her dad often reminds the family that customers treat it as if it’s ‘their’ farm. “He asks us, ‘What can we do to make them feel that way — that it’s ‘their’ farm?’” The Bishop family invites returning families and first-timers to experience a place unlike any other, and perhaps create a new tradition. “It’s very rewarding to do something that you can see people enjoy,” Bishop said. “We know that we’re lucky that we get to do something that people actually seek us out and thank us for what we do — that’s a rare thing.”

Key Club moments
AT ROSEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL by Tessa Marguerite
‘Although we do not make keys, we do open doors to opportunities.’
E
very Monday afternoon at Roseville High School, a group of 45 students meets during lunch to focus their ideas and goals on one thing. It’s not YouTube videos or Snapchat or the upcoming dance. It’s community service projects; because this is Key Club. Key Club is a student-lead, high school service club, sponsored by Kiwanis International, for the purpose of teaching leadership and community service — not making keys. There are approximately 5,000 Key Clubs in 37 countries. Locally, Key Clubbers can be found at Antelope, Bear River, Del Oro, Ghidotti, Granite Bay, Lincoln, Nevada Union, Placer, Rocklin, Whitney, Woodcreek and Roseville high schools. ‘KEY CLUB MOMENTS’
Khaeilene Epan, a junior, joined Key Club as a freshman and is this year’s club president. Epan that being a part of the club has changed her life for the better. “I first joined because I was genuinely curious on what Key Club does and I wanted to be involved with something from my school,” she said. “Before I joined Key Club, I was very shy and introverted. But through the club I have really learned to put myself out there and to think outside of the box!” One of the projects the club worked on last year was the Relay For Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. John DeLury, Kiwanis advisor to the Roseville Key Club, said 16 students from the Roseville club attended and raised money for
8
miles walked. The Roseville club worked collectively with several other local Key Clubs to raise money for cancer research. “In total,” said DeLury, “the students raised more than $3,000 for cancer research.” “I got to spend the whole day hanging out with my friends while raising money for such a great charity,” Epan said with exuberance. “I was very happy when I found out that our Key Club team raised that much money for Relay For Life! It was such a big accomplishment for us …” “Key Club has taught me to always put others first and practice the idea of caring for others,” said Vanessa Quach, Key Club media editor. Quach is a senior at Roseville High and has been involved in Key Club since freshman year. She was last year’s club president and vice president of spirit the previous year. Quach remembered a particularly significant moment in Key Club during a Placer Food Bank event. “I was transferring a lot of boxes of cans from the truck to the building,” recalled Quach. “I misjudged the weight of one of the boxes and when I was given it, I completely fell on the floor. It was such a mixture of a painful but fun experience because I laughed it off with all the other key clubbers as they helped me up. Every time I remember that event it makes me happy.” AN AFFINITY FOR SERVICE
DeLury beamed with pride and respect for the students as he considered their willingness to serve and raise money for charitable organizations. “It teaches the kids how to organize a major project; how to participate,” DeLury said. “It creates an affinity for community service.” DeLury was a Key Clubber as a student at Downy High School, a Circle K International member at Cal Poly and joined the Roseville Kiwanis Club when he retired in 2011. “Key Club has allowed me to value community service and

always practice the idea of caring every day,” Quach said. “It has also allowed me to find a second family and be surrounded by such great individuals.” DeLury said that projects are often guided by what Kiwanis does. In recent years, this has included the Relay For Life, Earth Day Festival, the Pediatric Trauma Program, helping at the Placer Food Bank and raising funds for various nonprofit groups. During the Roseville Bikefest in September, sponsored
by Kiwanis and other organizations, Key Clubbers helped fit helmets on kids and guide them around safety and challenge courses. “It’s really a student-lead club,” DeLury said. The club, under advisor Dana Dooley, has an elected board of students who discuss the projects they will tackle and how they will accomplish them. One of the goals Epan has as club president this school year is for Key Club to achieve 750 community service hours. Last year the club completed more than 500 service hours. “Another goal for our club is also to raise $300 for the Pediatric Trauma Program by the end of the term,” Epan said. Roseville Kiwanis Club offers senior scholarships each year for students who submit an application demonstrating their commitment to the principals of community service, and have maintained a good GPA. The budget for scholarships this year is $11,500. Not only is Key Club a place for students to expand their social skills and gain the rewards from serving their community, it is an instrument which creates a lasting impression that helps form the lives of these ambitious, energetic teenagers. My favorite saying in key club is “We don’t make keys, but we do open doors,” said Quach. “I believe that this organization has shaped me into being a better leader and individual.” OPENING DOORS: The Key Club board demonstrates their excitement for the club, community service and leadership development. pple, pumpkin, pecan, peach. These are only four of the endless favorite flavors of pie. There is very little in life that is as comforting and nostalgic as a piece of pie. Recipes are passed down from generations and many have their specific recipes. There really is nothing quite as decadent as a homemade pie. It has been 32 years since A Slice of Goodness opened its doors, but owner Debbie Manhart has been crafting and baking her beloved pies for many years prior. “I always loved to cook and I always cooked desserts for all of our friends. I was always the dessert person,” Manhart said. Her mother-in-law owns the building and provided the location for Manhart to follow her dream. “It took off in the first week and it has been busy ever since,” she said.

While pie is the star of the show, the menu consists of sandwiches, quiche, scones and soups. The most popular offering is the half sandwich and piece of pie. The sandwiches are so big that they cut them in half in order to leave more room for dessert. “The pies are really, really good, as are the sandwiches,” said regular customer, Gloria Richmond. “To me it is such a treat to come here.” Manhart’s favorite sandwich is called the Burnett sandwich and consists of tuna, bacon and cheddar cheese. “I love our tuna,” she said. When it comes to pie, the rhubarb is her favorite and a classic. She will stock up on seasonal ingredients before they completely go out of season. “I managed to get the last of the rhubarb I could find,” she said. Everything is made fresh every morning and Manhart does it all by

hand all by herself. Whole pies need to be ordered a day in advance and holiday pies need reservations at least 30 days in advance. Around Thanksgiving, Manhart will make about 450 pies in three days. However, for those immediate cravings, there is a rotating weekly menu in the café for those who enjoy pie one slice at a time. “I have my staples that are every day,” she said. As the holidays approach, the most popular pies are the traditional pumpkin, apple, pecan, etcera. However, Manhart likes to mix things up with a few of her own holiday favorites such as, pumpkin caramel pecan, which is an all-time favorite among customers, and hot caramel apple pie. Orders fill up quickly. She starts taking Thanksgiving orders Oct. 1 and is usually booked full by Nov. 1. “I’ve been doing it for so long, I could do it in my sleep,” she said. While all the pies are made by Manhart alone, she does have help around the café. Jamie Luna makes the sandwiches and Justin Burt is the allaround help, Manhart said. “It’s all secret. It’s all Great Grandma’s pie crust,” she said. Many of her pies are family recipes, but some have come from customer requests and simply inspiration. There is something that cannot be recreated with her pies, they are uniquely hers. Everyone’s hands are different and how they care for the dough varies. Manhart’s pies are truly one of a kind that cannot be identically recreated. There are about 50 to 60 pies, many of which have won awards over the years. This year, A Slice of Goodness won top rated bakery by Sacramento City Voter. “We are blessed with our customers,” Manhart said. Loyal patrons have been coming into the café for generations now. “It’s fun. It’s like a home away from home,” she said. Family photos hang on the walls in the restaurant. “And there is more out in the hall,” Manhart said. “It’s a homey place. When I am here it’s just like being in my kitchen.”

Mini Maker Faire comes to Rocklin.

“I
would say it is a wonderful blend between a science fair and a craft fair,” said Monica Nitz, marketing and development specialist for park and recreation for City of Rocklin. The Rocklin Mini Maker Faire is a place for everyone to come and explore their creativity and interests with handson projects, presentations and do-ityourself booths. As many wander the expansive campus of Sierra College in Rocklin they will find booths highlighting anything from 3D printing to robotics, sculptures, painting, down to small chalk designs. “People spend an average of three to four hours at the event,” Nitz said. Last year held 100 booths and this year the event is hoping to increase that number to at least 120. The free-to-thepublic event is anticipated to host more than 10,000 people on the large campus. a plethora of areas to participate in. It is the perfect place for entrepreneurs, businesses, and those who desire to learn a task they never though they would. “There are so many different things that happen at the event (that) once you see it and once you learn, it ignites a spark,” Nitz said. “I do recommend that they set aside some time. Spend some time to look around the event and take it all in.” Since it started in 2015, Nitz has seen it grow tremendously. It is still a fairly new concept to the community, but once continued on page 18

you hear about it and attend, your ears perk up every time you hear the word “maker,” Nitz said. “It’s just bringing back that concept that we are all creators, we are all makers,” she said. The makers bring something unique and interactive to each of their stations. From simple to complex, it can range from business endeavors to hobbies for fun. The main focus of the day is for the makers to showcase what they do best in an interactive platform for attendees. There are workshops, live music, entertainment and more. “We really cater to all ages,” Nitz said. “The technology is done in a way that children can learn.” They are called the Mini Maker Faire because they are licensed under the maker faire, which is a large event that happens all over the world in 38 different countries. They are a subgroup of the larger one. The Bay Area hosts the largest maker faire in the state.

People have the ability to create, learn and make. The more and more are people experiencing technology in an attainable way, said Nitz. There is growth of people looking at the process of making rather than the finished product. It also highlights historical projects
and the way things used to be done, such as bookmaking by hand and printing presses. “(It) highlight things we used to do hundred-plus years ago … look at where we came from,” she said. “Step into the creative mindset and let it inspire you to do what you have always been itching to do.”

ROSEVILLE ADORES
Buck and Sadie by Noelle Konrad
R
oseville has a new favorite hangout serving classic comfort foods and casual American cuisine. The idea of Buck and Sadie’s was born several years ago when owner Tino Phillips’ son wrote a paper for his high school class explaining that when he grew up, he wanted to open a restaurant and name it after his grandparents, Buck and Sadie. Now that Tino’s kids are older, she decided to open her son’s original concept with the help of her parents and inspiration for the name, Mike and Barbara a.k.a Buck and Sadie. It was during one of Mike and Barbara’s many traveling adventures that the nicknames Buck and Sadie came to be. Mike Phillips saw a road sign that said “this highway cleaned by Buck.” “I’ve always wanted to be named Buck,” Mike “Buck” Phillips said. It was a while later, but Barbara thought if Buck could change his name, then she wanted to as well, so she picked Sadie after her grandmother. The names stuck and they have been known by those nicknames ever since.
20
When it came time to break ground on the concept, Sadie designed the restaurant and Buck provided his previous experience of developing restaurants. As co-founder of BJ’s Restaurants and Brewhouse, his advice was invaluable. “It’s an all American casual fun restaurant,” Sadie said. What started as just an idea in a school essay became a reality on April 1, 2016. “We are really happy with it. It’s a good concept,” Buck said. The restaurant serves a full menu of burgers, wings, hot dogs, full-sized salads, desserts, and their newest menu item of Mac and Cheese, which was introduced only just over a month ago. “People love it (the Mac and Cheese), they can put any of our wings sauces on it,” Tino said. “It’s sort of a create-yourown portion of our menu.” “Buck likes it with chili on it,” Sadie said. The Phillips family has been in the restaurant industry since 1976 and it has become generational careers. Their son owns four restaurants down in Southern
California and Buck and Sadie’s employs several family members. “It’s a pretty interesting story we have,” Buck said. “We have definitely become known for our burgers,” Tino said. The Bacon Me Love You burger, topped with a small pickle, is the most popular followed closely by Sadie’s Original. “We top all our burgers with a gherkin; it’s a conversation starter all on its own,” Tino said. After only having been open just over a year, they have already won awards for their menu. The Sacramento A-List for 2017 noted them as No. 2 burger, No. 4 wings and No. 5 for beer selection. “The following is enormous,” Tino said. “A lot of people have fallen in love with us quickly.” All of their sauces are house-made. They range from mild to inferno with the most popular being the Mama’s Sauce and the Shanty Sauce. Buck and Sadie’s is one of the few restaurants in the area to serve frozen custard, a popular Midwest dessert that

is hard to find locally. Their special is the Crownie, a warm Ghirardelli brownie served with frozen custard and topped with peanuts. “It (the custard) is smooth as butter,” Sadie said. The original plan was to do pizza, but with the plethora of pizza places consuming Roseville, they quickly changed their minds. Burgers, wings and brew became their plan. “You can’t beat it. It’s a great combination,” Buck said. The bar has a total of 16 handles and eight bottles that rotate often with a few standards that remain constant. They will often have several local and national brands at-the-ready. There is always at least one sour beer on tap and the wine they serve is immediately ready for consumption with full flavor. Many regulars come in during the tap takeovers for a chance to taste their favorite featured breweries. Tino’s mission is to spread to more locations, while keeping the menu consistent. The business model the Phillips’ have created leaves the available room for expansion in further locations. “It’s just a great place really,” Buck said.

ROSEVILLE’S
Oktoberfest returns By Julie Miller
D
ust off the lederhosen, Oktoberfest is coming to Roseville. Nearly 20 breweries are expected to be at the third annual Oktoberfest offering three to five kinds of beer each. Attendees will receive a small five-ounce mug and can have unlimited tastings. Ticket sales are limited to the amount of beer and breweries featured at the event which is hosted by the City of Roseville. This keeps the ale lines within reasonable length and tasters happy. “Generally people like it because they don’t have to wait in line,” Pam Allen said, public information officer for Roseville. “Our focus is providing a good experience. We’d rather have less people have a great experience, than have more people have an OK experience.” There will also be food vendors offering pretzels and bratwurst, as well as barbecue ribs, hamburgers and pulled-pork sandwiches. Allen encourages purchasing tickets early as the event typically sells out. Costumes are promoted, too. In past years, Oktoberfestgoers have dressed in the aforementioned lederhosen as well as whimsical beer T-shirts and chicken getups. Which leads to the contests. Competitions held throughout the

event include: costume contest, beer-stein-holding contest and chicken dance contest. There will also be a traditional ooh-pa-pa band, AlpenBand, and an ’70s-‘80s cover band, Neon Playboys. However, after the beer has been drunk and the chicken dancers have all gone home, the fun does not end. Proceeds from Oktoberfest help fund Roseville Parks and Recreation programs for at-risk youth, such as paying for playgrounds and soccer classes. In the summer, it gives these young ones swim lessons along with a swimsuit and towel. Free family swim nights are also made possible. So, drink beer for a good cause at City of Roseville’s Oktoberfest.

chefs’ corner
meet chef Jared Campbell How long have you been a chef ? I’ve been a pizza chef for over 13 years — and my love for creating my own recipes began when my wife and I opened Campelli’s Pizza. What is your favorite dish or specialty? At Campelli’s, a crew and regular fave is, by far, the Fumo BBQ — it comes with sweet and tangy barbecue sauce, red onions and crispy bacon, and we like to add pineapple, jalapeño and cilantro with a barbecue sauce drizzle. My favorite pie is very simple — super thin crust, light sauce, light mozz, chopped garlic, tomatoes, green olives and either salami or our bulk Italian sausage with fennel. I also love our homemade pesto sauce that I created to cut down the oil and add a creamy texture to the base, because the standard pesto sauces are so oily when added to mozzarella that they puddle and create a soggy crust. Our pizzas are all fantastic, compliments to our fresh dough made daily, crust painted with herb butter, and our marinara sauce from locally sourced tomatoes, blended with seven herbs and spices! What do you make when you’re not at the restaurant? We love to cook at home, especially with our neighbor who is a fabulous chef and caterer — Catering by McCallister, who has really inspired me in our home kitchen. Our family’s favorite dishes include salmon, carnitas, and my all time favorite beef Wellington — our Christmas tradition. What is your favorite ingredient to cook with? Garlic, basil, Himalayan sea salt. My mother-in-law has to request our meals during her visits to have less garlic, we go a bit crazy. Are there any food trends you are tired of seeing? Never. I love everything, and it’s awesome to see so much creativity in all culinary genres, and when it come to pizza, we enjoy (almost) all of them! Where do you source your ingredients? Our pizzas take it up a notch and use only the absolute best ingredients. Aside from our fresh, local produce, we’ve cut against hundreds of pizzas toppings and cheeses over the years. Our favorite stand-out ingredient is our mozzarella, an obvious pizza staple. We use 100 percent Bacio, whole milk mozz,

sourced from New Jersey and made with a “kiss” (“bacio” in Italian) of Buffalo milk. It’s creamy, buttery, has an incredible stretch and balanced flavor profile. If you ever want to test the integrity of a pizza, order a cheese-only pie! Where do you see yourself in seven years? After almost 10 years in West Roseville, we’ve just completed our party room expansion and gorgeous remodel. Now that our daughters are in school and we have such a stellar crew, we are nearing the time that we can open new locations! In a few years, we would be thrilled with a few more in the area, a large team of talented crew members, and thousands more happy customers. We love what we do, so I see myself in the shop still, making dough in the morning or slanging pies during the rush for decades to come.

The classic white tile counters found here brighten up the room even more. Among the home’s 2,000-plus square feet is a spacious master bedroom with bathroom suite featuring a soaking tub, separate shower, double sinks and an oversized walk-in closet. There are three other well-proportioned bedrooms. There is also a well-maintained, finished backyard with mature landscaping, thick grass and defined seating areas. You’ll want to spend your evenings on the uncovered patio, or mornings sipping coffee on the front porch lined in wrought iron. As a bonus, the home, built in 2002, also provides 3.5 killowatts of solar power. There is also a two-car attached garage and desired tile roof with a long life ahead of it. All this is also conveniently located close to parks and shopping, and is served by Roseville city schools. Just listed, this property likely won’t last for long. Take Baseline Road west, right on Fiddyment, right on San Fernando Drive, another right on Soledad Drive and left on San Jose Way.

Pumpkin Patch By noelle konrad
T
raditional pumpkin patches are always an anticipated fall feature for families all over and October in California can often bring random heat waves. However, the community of Roseville offers something special and not commonly seen in order to beat the heat and still have that perfect pumpkin picking experience. This is the third year for the Floating Pumpkin Patch hosted by the City of Roseville. Splash around and pick a pumpkin for the season at the Mike Shellito Indoor Pool, but sign up early because it only comes around once a year for one day and availability goes fast. “It’s primarily families with younger children (who attend),” said Pam Allen, public information officer for Roseville Parks and Recreation and library. Last year the event was completely sold out and they are anticipating the same, if not a larger crowd this year, which is why registration is a requirement. There are two pools at the facility and both are heated. The smaller warm water pool will be brimming with pumpkins of all shapes and sizes, perfect for picking. It will also be constantly filled as the day progresses. “That is the pool we put pumpkins in,” Allen said. “We put a bunch in there. We don’t want people to show up and be disappointed.” The other pool is open for those who want to enjoy the refreshing water and swim around while they wait for their turn. However, swimming is not the only activity of the day. Because

of the wait before wading into the water for pumpkin picking, in the mean time families and children can partake in other activities such as pumpkin painting and decorating, face painting, story time, bounce houses and more. The second pool that is open for swimming has an inflatable obstacle course and a few pumpkins to swim with for further enjoyment. “We do carnival games,” she said. “We don’t carve (pumpkins) but we decorate.” Attendees are encouraged to bring a swim suit and even a Halloween costume for the time not spent in the water. The pumpkins are brought in a few days before and are already cleaned and ready for the pool, so no worries about wading into muddy water. “People are surprised to even learn they (pumpkins) float,” Allen said. “It’s just a fun little event.”

Please note: Placer Valley Tourism, which took over operations of the Placer County Fairgrounds in Roseville in July, has begun making significant renovations to the fairgrounds. Their work includes improvements to the main parking lot, which will require that lot to be closed during the month of October. Fans attending the 10th Annual October Classic NASCAR K&N Race at All American Speedway on Saturday, Oct. 14, will be directed to park in the back lot. Courtesy shuttles will be in operation to provide rides back and forth from the parking lot to the midway adjacent to the speedway.
