More than gourds

BISHOP’S PUMPKIN FARM IS A FAMILY TRADITION SINCE 1973 STORY AND PHOTOS BY TESSA MARGUERITE

B

ishop’s Pumpkin Farm is more than a pumpkin patch: It is a fall family tradition on a wide stretch of farmstead with corn, apple trees, hay bales, a bakery, a gift shop and yes, pumpkins — of all shapes and sizes.

The 40-acre farm was started by Sandy and Bill Bishop in 1973 with a simple pumpkin patch on about an acre of land. Sandy Bishop was a teacher and wanted to allow kids the chance to visit a farm.

“We never thought back then that it was going to be anything like this,” said Wayne Bishop, son of Bill and Sandy.

From one patch of gourds to the festive and fun spectacle that it is today, the Bishop family has remained at the center.

The farm is currently run by Ann and Wayne Bishop with their children, Meghan Sanderson and Austin Bishop with his wife, Chealsie, along

with a fulltime staff of about six people. During the September through November season (ends Nov. 5), the Bishops hire approximately 450 seasonal employees for food services, attractions, hay rides and the gift shop. This year, they expect 180,000 grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents and children to enjoy the many offerings of the farm.

“Growing up on a pumpkin farm was pretty fun,” Sanderson said. “I spent a lot of days out here just running around and playing with the animals.” There are baby goats, donkeys, sheep, cows and a horse on the farm — some of which are participating in this season’s upgraded petting zoo. “The animals have moved in and seem to really love it already,” Sanderson said.

During the spring season, the farm is open for a short time, but the main attractions are only available in the fall season.

“We love getting to see all the people who come back to see us year after year,” Sanderson said. Bishop said that two years ago it was too hot during October, and last year it was too wet.

This year, it seems that there may be just the right combination of plump pumpkins and little hands eager to pick them.

Every Saturday in October, there will be a movie night in the pumpkin field. The event is free, except for parking. Paint and Brunch, a new event where attendees can paint a fall-themed canvas while enjoying goodies from Mrs. B’s Bakery, is sold out. However, more dates may be added later this month. Now in their 45th season, the Bishop family is eager for many familiar faces to walk through the open barn doors of the farm.

“We have generations coming back,” Sanderson said. “Grandparents who came here when they were kids are now bringing their own grandchildren. So I think it’s that longtime family connection that brings people back. It’s their farm.”

Sanderson said her dad often reminds the family that customers treat it as if it’s ‘their’ farm.

“He asks us, ‘What can we do to make them feel that way — that it’s ‘their’ farm?’”

The Bishop family invites returning families and first-timers to experience a place unlike any other, and perhaps create a new tradition.

“It’s very rewarding to do something that you can see people enjoy,” Bishop said. “We know that we’re lucky that we get to do something that people actually seek us out and thank us for what we do — that’s a rare thing.”

Volunteer pays it forward

im Trimble knows how it feels to sit in a hospital waiting room. When her son was rushed to Sutter Auburn Faith after a bad accident, she was left in the lobby to pace and worry.

She also knows how it feels to get answers, or even just a friendly face and attentive ear.

“I spent a lot of time sitting and waiting and wondering,” she said, recalling that frightening experience several years ago. “But I always knew I could find a volunteer to ask. That meant so much to me.”

It meant so much that she became a Sutter volunteer, too.

“I retired over a year ago and I decided to do something with my time,” the former accounting and finance professional said. “I was born and raised in Auburn, and many family and friends have come to [Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital] to be treated. I’ve always remembered that the volunteers were such an important part of recovery.”

Trimble applied and started out in the one-day ambulatory surgical department, but was soon offered the position of internal volunteer coordinator.

Now, the fourth-generation Auburnite coordinates the schedules and activities of 50 volunteers in 10 departments that range from information desk and meet-and-greet to assisting in the emergency room.

“There are a lot of opportunities to anyone who wants to give some time back to the community,” she said. “It’s not the old candy striper days anymore. We have a wide spectrum of volunteers, from 18 to 80.”

Anyone interested in giving their time can apply online at sutterauburnfaith.org/volunteer. The only requirement is a one-year commitment of four hours per week, performing activities that can include walking people to their appointment, delivering meals to rooms, working in the gift shop or kitchen, or just spending time with those who need companionship.

“We’re a community hospital,” said Communications Coordinator Leslie Meiring. “We’re providing a familiar face and a gentle hand for our patients and our patients families.

Trimble agreed. “Giving back to the community is most important,” she said. “It’s really been very rewarding.”

Interpretations of nature ARTIST TERRY SHEARN USES NATURE AS HER TERRESTRIAL MUSE

T

erry Shearn is a fiber artist, maker and explorer. She began as a lanky teen who was having difficulty finding the type of clothes that fit her, and that she enjoyed wearing. A needle and thread became the door through which an undiscovered world of artistic brilliance was created.

Shearn grew up in the Bay Area, and worked as a teacher in Richmond before moving to Placer County in 2001.

She now resides amidst the reaching pine trees of Dutch Flat. Finding herself surrounded by forests, mountains and valleys replete with deep, rich tones, Shearn was inspired to use nature as her terrestrial muse.

Fiber art and botanical dyeing “Working with pine needles and basketry really kind of introduced me to other forms of fiber art,” Shearn said. “You can use fluffy wool to create anything. And you’re making your fabric the same time you’re making your items.”

Fabric art are artistic, often wearable, pieces made out of natural or synthetic fiber and other components such as yarn or silk. Shearn often works with wool and alpaca roving (bundles of fiber) to create seamless dresses, hats, jackets and portions of furniture. She also does felting and basketry, and works with gourds and metals.

About five years ago, Shearn began experimenting with botanical dyeing. “I weave flowers to get natural dye,” Shearn said.

“It’s all directly from the pigment of the leaf.”

She uses walnuts to draw out browns and greens; eucalyptus leaves for orange pigment; oak bark for light browns; 10

On social media, Shearn’s art is on Etsy, Instagram and Facebook. and maple for a purple tone. “It’s just an experimental thing,” Shearn said.

The process of getting the colors from their natural state into a fabric takes patience. First, Shearn washes the fabric in extremely hot water, called scouring, then soaks it in a mordant to make the fabric receptive to the color. She also uses a vinegar and water soak on certain fabrics. When using cotton, Shearn soaks it for a week in soy milk, to add protein, lets it dry and then repeats the process three or four more times.

“All of this is just an ongoing learning process,” she said.

Naturally inspired “I get most of my inspiration from nature, especially with the leaves,” Shearn said. “I love things that are really organic.”

Shearn enjoys hiking, camping and exploring the great and vast outdoors. She often uses a telescope to gaze at the stars in the night sky, and sometimes, create her own interpretation of the scene in her art. “I did a dress recently, dark in the background and the patterns are nebular,” she said. “I pull inspiration from a lot of places.”

Another particularly influential fiber art piece Shearn designed and created was light and airy teal dress.

“It was the first one I did that just had a lot of elements in it that made me realize there’s no limit to what I can put into these things,” she said.

Shearn created the weightless feel by forcing small fluffs of wool into silk to make a cohesive fabric. She incorporated different types of dyed silk, roving and locks sheered straight off a sheep. The end result is a completely unique piece of clothing with an organic, earthy feel.

“It’s not like buying fabric and sewing something,” Shearn said. “I add a lot to them and there are no restrictions.”

Time for art Although most of her energy goes toward fiber art, Shearn experiments with other mediums as well. After taking some welding classes, Shearn began to work with metal, including bicycle gears, music stands and rusty spoons.

“My favorite thing to do is use odd pieces of stuff I find and repurpose them,” she said. “I try and play with everything; if something intrigues me I’ll just try it.”

Shearn has taken many art workshops, and has taught workshops on traditional and botanical printing, felting for hats and pine needle basketry. In addition to all this, Shearn also works fulltime as an accountant in Newcastle.

“After a day in front of the computer, it’s great to go home and work in my studio,” she said. “My job gives me freedom to do what I want with my art. If you really love something, you make the time for it.”

FROGGY CERAMICS CREATES ITS OWN CUSTOM MOLDS STORY AND PHOTOS BY NOELLE KONRAD

F

roggy Ceramics has been open since May and while they are still fairly new, the art of ceramics remains one of Auburn’s most creative outlets.

Owner of Froggy Ceramics, Kay Kinter has been doing ceramics for 22 years.

“Back in the day I was homeschooling my children,” she said.

There was a little ceramics shop down the street from where she lived and she used the studio as an art class for her children.

“Next thing you know they were going to school and I am opening up a business,” Kinter said.

She spent several years as a supplier to other stores until taking a nine-year break when she was a school bus driver.

“And then I decided I was done doing that and I wanted to do this again,” she said.

She spent a lot of years walking into other studios wishing she could open her own, but thinking it wasn’t in the cards for her. Having her own studio is a dream come true and she stands out in the tradition of creating her own ceramic molds rather than shipping them in from China as 16

many other studios do. It is rare for studios to make their own molds.

Within the studio, Kinter has a commercial-sized kiln where she will fire the many creations herself. The kiln can heat up anywhere from under 2,000 degrees to a max of 2,350 degrees. The process is very precise for each different creation, as the size and placement of the pieces matter before firing.

“If you don’t stilt them properly, they will crack,” Kinter said.

Many don’t fully comprehend the specific process that precedes painting. Kinter is self-taught and after creating her molds, she will clean and fire the creations twice before they are ready for the special paint. This gives it that white ceramic look and allows the paint to stick before firing one last time for completion.

“When I learned ceramics, no one would show (me) anything,” Kinter said.

With more than 9,000 molds, Kinter’s studio can’t possibly demonstrate the variety of ceramics. Some of the more popular molds are garden ornaments, dishes, mermaids, dragons and other fictional characters. She has noticed that little jewelry boxes are very popular among girls.

Classes begin in October along with many other events.

On the second Friday of the month is ladies night where Froggy Ceramics will stay open later and attendees will bring a dish to share.

“We just hang out and have a good time,” Kinter said.

Her studio is also a popular outlet for birthday parties, field trips, Boy Scout and Girl Scout events, and truly fun for all ages.

“Everybody that comes here enjoys it,” she said.

Last year, Froggy Ceramics partnered with Placer County Office of Education.

“I was the mental health component,” she said.

It can be truly a meditative and peaceful project. Right now they are also a vendor for some local charter schools in the area.

Froggy Ceramics’ mascot is the frog for many reasons.

Kinter’s 19-year-old daughter loves frogs and a variety of animal ceramics can be found within the store.

“She’s loved frogs since she was little,” she said, “still loves them today.”

In fact frogs are on every table to hold the paint brushes, but Froggy is also an acronym for faithfully relying on god gracefully yoked, Kitner said.

As the holidays approach, Kinter is prepared with pumpkins, Halloween figures and even Christmas trees.

While anybody can theoretically purchase the figurines from craft stores, there is a special hands-on component that Froggy Ceramics offers.

“There is something different about making it yourself,” she said.

The possibilities for creativity are endless.

HARVEST SALAD

all brings out several new shades of color and several missed flavors the summer just didn’t provide. One of the many craved flavors is pumpkin. Because we can’t always indulge in pumpkin spice lattes and slices of pumpkin pie, I decided to get my squash craving satisfied in the form of a healthy vibrantly colored salad.

All the colors of fall are placed on a plate. The kale is a deep green, the pumpkin is harvest orange, the cranberries are the perfect shade of burgundy and the pecans add a nice rich brown along with a crunchy texture. It is great for those of us who have been anticipating the change in scenery all year long.

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

1 bunch of common curly kale 1 bunch of lacinato kale 1 small pumpkin Salt and pepper to taste 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup dried cranberries 1 cup raw pecans

1 cup of salted pepitas 2 cups of shredded chicken Dressing: ½ cup olive oil ¼ cup dijon mustard ¼ cup apple cider vinegar Juice from a lemon Salt and pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 435 degrees F. 2. Wash kale and thinly slice the two bunches of different kale into strips and place in a bowl.

3. Place cranberries, pepitas, and shredded chicken in the bowl with kale.

4. Cut and dice pumpkin into cubes.

5. Arrange on a baking sheet and cover with coconut oil, salt, pepper and cinnamon.

6. Roast for 20 minutes.

7. At 20 minutes, add pecans to the mix and roast for another 10 minutes. Add more coconut oil, salt and cinnamon to the pecans if desired.

8. Pull out of oven and cool completely then place in bowl.

9. Place all in the ingredients for the dressing into a small bowl and mix well.

10. Add desired amount to salad.

11. Toss and enjoy.

12. As a note you can also toast the salad the next day for a warm harvest treat. Just lay the rest of the leftovers flat on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees F for about 15 minutes. Watch the kale because it will burn quickly and toss in more olive oil if the kale is really dry.

PUMPKIN PIE BITES

et’s face it, pumpkin pie is always a favorite on the family fall table, but let’s get real, baking a pie from scratch is not easy. What do you do when you want that pumpkin pie goodness without all the hassle? Mini pumpkin pie bites are the perfect crust-less craving killer for any harvest party. Why have just one piece when you can have many? Top with whipped cream and nutmeg and you have a new contender to a fall favorite.

Serves 4 to 12

INGREDIENTS

1 15-ounce can of pumpkin puree Coconut oil for lining pan ½ cup raw coconut sugar ¼ cup organic maple sugar 2 large eggs 1 large egg yolk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¾ cup full fat coconut milk

1 cup almond flour 2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon baking powder Whipped cream for topping: Use So Delicious CocoWhip for a dairy-free option.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Spray a mini muffin pan with coconut oil 3. In a large bowl, combine pumpkin, coconut sugar, maple syrup, eggs, yolk, vanilla and milk. Mix well.

4. Sift flour, pumpkin spice, salt, baking soda and baking powder over the wet mixture. Fold flour in. The batter should resemble pancake batter. If it is too runny add more almond flour to thicken.

5. Spoon batter into the mini muffin tin until they are all full.

6. Bake for 30 minutes and check with a toothpick to check if they are done.

Every oven is different. Bake for an additional 10 minutes if needed.

7. Pull out of the oven and cool completely before attempting to handle.

8. Refrigerate for an hour.

9. Top with cream, cinnamon or nutmeg and enjoy.

PUMPKIN SPICE KETTLE CORN

P

umpkin spice is almost cheating when it comes to a pumpkin recipe, but in the spirit of fall I had to include the most beloved spice of all time. Pumpkin spice is the indicator that fall is here. It is inescapable. It seems like every aisle of every store is lined with candles, cake mixes, lattes, and more — all labeled pumpkin spice. I had to contribute to the madness with my take on a fun fall snack for the entire family. Pumpkin Spice Popcorn is great for movie night or packaged in little bags as harvest party favors.

Serves 2-6

INGREDIENTS:

½ cup of unpopped popcorn kernels 2 tablespoon olive oil for popping 1 cup salted butter 1 cup dark brown sugar 1/3 cup organic maple syrup 2 teaspoon pink Himalayan salt 2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 or 4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice depending on preference INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. 2. Line an extra large baking sheet with tin foil and set aside.

3. In a large sauce pan, heat the olive oil until warm and pour the ½ cup of popcorn kernels into the pot over medium heat on the stove.

4. Continuously shake the pot over the heat so kernels do not burn until popping has stopped.

5. Place all popped kernels into a large bowl.

6. In a small saucepan melt the butter, brown sugar and maple syrup until boiling.

7. Boil for about 4 minutes without stirring.

8. Remove from heat and add vanilla and pumpkin spice.

9. Pour the mixture over the popcorn, coat evenly by tossing.

10. Lay the popcorn on the lined baking sheet and sprinkle with salt to taste.

11. Bake for 30 minutes and stir every 10 minutes to keep from burning.

12. Allow popcorn to cool and then serve and enjoy!

hat we are working on is introducing people to the game of golf,” Indian Creek Country Club President and General Manager Jan Clark-Crets said.

“We really want to be ambassadors to the game.”

The game of golf has developed a reputation as a game for an older generation and is increasingly getting less and less common among younger ages. This is a stereotype that Indian Creek has sought out to change.

Women’s clubs with about 90 members and men’s clubs of about 50 members come out once a week to play either the nine holes or complete the course twice for 18 holes.

“We have a wonderful ladies’ club, they play on Wednesdays,” Clark-Crets said.

Among the other players are two golf professionals on the course who often will provide ladies clinics and golf programs for all ages.

“Our goal as a course is to be the best nine-hole experience of anybody,” she said.

The parking lot is often filled with both men and women preparing to tee off. The rather large 90-acre property is host for an almost 60-acre nine-hole course, a shaded driving range, pro-shop and the Club 9 Grill which serves breakfast and lunch.

“We are really proud of it (the café) because everything we serve there is top-notch quality,” Clark-Crets said. “You can probably get the best cheeseburger in California there.”

They even do their own catering for small parties such as birthday, retirement, bachelor or even bridal showers.

“The people that work for us are fantastic cooks,” she said.

At this time they do not do weddings, however they certainly have the space for it.

“It would be great one day to have some sort of wedding facility,” ClarkCrets said.

The course is freckled with classic foothill nature elements. There are rolling hills, creeks, small ponds and a lake surrounded by flowers and trees.

“We have just thousands of gorgeous oak trees, many different varieties,” Clark-Crets said. “I am very biased because I grew up here, but I just feel like this part of California is just beautiful. It’s just picturesque.”

The club just recently celebrated its 50th anniversary since Clark-Crets parents, James “Jim” and Jane Clark, opened the course in 1967. James Clark played on the Harvard gold team at age 19. Two pictures the parents playing the game hang in the café in their honor. The business is still family-run by Clark-Crets, her siblings, brother-in-law, and some nieces and nephews.

“My dad was golf-pro and my mom was an artist,” she said.

They both came from the East Coast and drove all over California until pulling over in Loomis and never wanting to leave.

Keeping the golf course grounds manicured is no easy task. They are groomed every day and on a very intricate schedule. Because the course was built back in the late ‘60s, it is still on a manual water system. Workers are hired to water the greens at night and discretely during the morning.

“This time of year we are mowing every single day,” Clark-Crets said. “It is very technical.”

Indian Creek strives to create a home-like atmosphere that would make any golfer comfortable. The friendly staff is there to assist players of all ranges of expertise.

The game of golf is an amazing sport that teaches many attributes of patience, manners, humility and more, Clark-Crets said.

“We want to encourage the game of golf,” Clark-Crets said. “You learn so much about life with this game. It is a game of many difference facets.”

Meet volunteer, Amanda Williams

A

manda Williams is 21 years old. She is a student at Sacramento State University studying communications with an emphasis in public relations, a gymnastics teacher and a volunteer at KidsFirst.

KidsFirst was established in 1989 and offers training, educational outreach, preventative care, referrals and overall family wellness.

“It’s a place for resources and lots of help for anyone in the community with kids and families that need the help or want to prevent neglect and abuse,” Williams said. “We provide it for them or direct them to somewhere they can get the help.”

The nonprofit is the Child Abuse Prevention Council for Placer County. These councils can be found in every county in California, leading the way in the effort to prevent child abuse and neglect.

Williams said she started volunteering at KidsFirst because she loves kids. As a gymnastics teacher for aspiring athletes, Williams instructs children who come from families who have the time, money and income to take gymnastics classes.

“I wanted to help kids who don’t have all of these resources like the ones I teach and give back to the community,” she said.

This is precisely how Williams — and many other volunteers — has chosen to spend her spare time.

“It’s been an eye-opening experience,” Williams said somberly. “I’ve learned so much about child abuse and neglect and how to prevent it.”

One of the goals of KidsFirst is to raise awareness and accessibility through outreach and community events. Some of Williams’ roles as a volunteer include designing graphics, responding to emails, going to Roseville’s Downtown Tuesday Nights as an ambassador and attending trainings.

KidsFirst receives client referrals through public and community-based organizations such as the Child Welfare System and Placer County Victim Services Center. It also receives referrals through schools, courts, law enforcement agencies and health care providers. Despite the nonprofit’s name, KidsFirst offers services to adults as well.

“We help families going through a divorce or custody battles and offer counseling for both adults and kids,” Williams added.

At the first event Williams attended as a volunteer, she heard a speaker — a young woman, like herself, who had a devastating, and yet inspiring, story.

The woman talked about her experience of being in an abusive relationship and getting pregnant to try and make the situation better. It didn’t make the situation better.

She was addicted to drugs and when the child was born it was taken away. After months of custody battles and a restraining order against her partner, this young woman’s life seemed to be crumbling. But then she came to KidsFirst.

With the proper resources and counseling, the unimaginable happened and she is now married to the father of her first child and together they have two children. She has been clean for two years.

The story affected Williams and encouraged her to keep volunteering and dedicating her time.

“I was blown away by how much of a difference this organization can make in the community, and other organizations like this,” she said.

KidsFirst welcomes volunteers every day of the week. The organization has two buildings: One in Roseville and the other in Auburn.

“KidsFirst is an amazing organization,” Williams said.

“They do so much for the community whether they’re helping or giving or trying to figure something out ... everyone who works here has an amazing heart. It’s very warming to come inside. You don’t really find this in other places around Placer County.”

Williams’ goal is to determine which direction she wants to go in her future in the field of communications and public relations.

“Something I’m very interested in is event planning,” she said.

Until she decides, Williams is content being a student, teaching gymnastics and working with community behind the scenes as a volunteer with KidsFirst.

“Whatever is needed,” she said with a smile.

Pompeii Pizza and Swamp Angel

“This is the one we call our Pompeii,” Scott Thorson said, owner of Bella Familia.

The spicy pizza is topped with thinly sliced fresh jalapeños, a white sauce, mozzarella and Bella Familia’s own house Italian sausage.

“It has a nice heat,” Thorson said. “It is nice and bold.”

The pairing beer is called Swamp Angel, a light beer is a traditional West Coast-style IPA that drives a lot of its flavor from the hops.

Its color is derived from the little bit of malt crystal that resides in the IPA, giving it a subtle amber hue and another layer to its complexity. The hoppy flavor and aroma that sits on the back end of the beer helps cut through any spiciness that the jalapeños give off and is a perfect match for any sort of meats like the Italian sausage. “(It is) quite firm on the hoppy bitterness,” Adrian Psuty said, head of brewing operations at Crooked Lane Brewery.

“It is a really nice match, especially for a spicier food offering.”

“This is my favorite; this is just a traditional margherita,” Thorson said.

The pizza is simply topped with fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, with a little sea salt and olive oil to combine all the flavors. Traditionally the basil is put on before placing it into the oven, but Thorson prefers the more vibrant flavor of fresh basil. Bella Familia will chiffonade the basil so it comes out really fine and lightly places it on top.

“I think it has a more vibrant flavor that contrasts really nicely with the tomato sauce versus just cooked basil,” Thorson said.

Crusts are all made by hand with organic flour that comes from Logan, Utah.

“Most people don’t realize Italy doesn’t grow that much flour,” Thorson said.

The organic flour is milled with same fineness and technique as any Italian flour, but he likes that it is a U.S. product. Using a cold ferment instead of a proofing for the dough helps to achieve a unique flavor profile.

This pizza is paired with a Kölsch, which style comes from the Cologne region in Germany. The very pale beer is light with fruity notes and is meant to be consumed cold and served in a traditional style glass called a stange.

Some other flavors detected are bread and biscuit-like which pairs well with the fermented crust.

“Really crispy and clean,” Psuty said regarding its flavor.

It would not pair well with heavy meats because the beer would be overwhelmed.

“These two match really well together because the acidity in the marinara sauce and the lightness of the cheese go really well with the kind of light notes of this beer,” Psuty said. “This is the perfect summer combination.”

Gilroy and Roaky Mandarina

“This is our Gilroy,” Thorson said.

Bella Familia uses an all beef pepperoni and garlic chopped fresh for this popular menu item.

“You just can’t beat pepperoni and garlic,” Thorson said. “I mean it’s a great flavor.”

All of their pizzas have simple, but abundantly flavorful toppings. By keeping the toppings to no more than three, they can avoid overwhelming the crust with weight, causing an undercooked crust. Two or three items work best when baking in a wood-burning oven at about 750 degrees.

Bella Familia has been a family company for nine and a half years, but the food truck is a relatively new addition with an actual wood fire oven inside. The temperatures in the truck are often in the hundreds.

There are also two mobile trailers that have been with them since the beginning.

Helping serve was Thorson’s son Tucker Thorson and staff member Ben Davis.

The Gilroy is perfectly paired with Crooked Lane’s Roaky Mandarina. This New England-style IPA is rather soft on bitterness, but very high in flavor and aromas of the northwestern-style hops, which is uncommon for a traditional IPA. “(It’s a) really juicy IPA and intentionally hazy,” Psuty said.

A while back, Crooked Lane Brewing Co. Partnered with a local mandarin farmer for fresh mandarin juice to infuse in the Roaky Mandarina adding yet another layer of citrus flavor and aroma. “(It is) really easy drinking and has become one of our most popular styles because it’s got all these flavor and aroma characteristics, but is relatively dry,” Psuty said.

The beer has a great chewy juiciness, but then dissipates and leaves the consumer craving another sip.

This is an ideal pairing with the beef pepperoni on the pizza. The two match quite well together by offsetting flavors and working in a cohesive balance. “‘There is a fair amount of complexity to the beer and a fair amount of complexity to the pizza,” Psuty said.
