NFL Boycott

By Bob Franken I did it! I made it through Sunday without watching an NFL game!

Perhaps I didn’t mention it, but I’ve decided to boycott the National Football League. It’s not an easy decision for me. I played football.

Come to think of it, that might explain my mental acuity (or lack thereof). But I’ve had a lifetime attachment to the game. Until now.

At least I won’t be watching the pros play on TV, and certainly not in person. That’s become way too expensive.

The reason for my shunning the NFL can be explained in two words.

You can probably guess them. No, not those two words. I’m talking about Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback who isn’t -- isn’t on any pro squad in spite of the fact that he is way more qualified than many of the others who’ve at least hung on as backups.

Kaepernick created quite an uproar last year when he was with the San Francisco 49ers. He chose not to stand during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” He explained that it was his way of expressing opposition to the sometimes deadly police brutality on so many occasions aimed at minorities and the mistreatment in general of the poor and people of color. And in spite of crushing pressure to abandon his protest, he refused. He continued to sit out and, finally, kneel out during the national anthem.

At the end of last year, Kaepernick decided to become a free agent, to leave the 49ers and to try to sign a more lucrative contract with another team. But guess what? No other organization would have anything to

do with him. In spite of his obvious talents and record, including a Super Bowl win as the starting quarterback, Kaepernick was not hired by any franchise, even those who developed a dire need for quarterback help.

It’s obvious that his protest is the reason; equally obvious that he’s been blackballed. Some of the team owners – a conservative bunch of rich guys – simply are bugged by his action or by his violation of the make-no-waves mandate. Others are more concerned that the controversy would antagonize fans, so their stifling of the free expression that is so fundamental in the USA was a financial decision – an un-American one, but strictly about profits.

So the NFL is without Kaepernick, and it’ll be without Franken. As much as I love the game, this isn’t a big decision. I’ve already chosen not to go to any games of the Washington pro football club because of the team name, the R-word. So ignoring the whole thing is not that big a deal, particularly with the dismal record the National Football League has had dealing with pervasive head injuries to its players and the lengths league officials went to hide the danger.

Besides, I have baseball, and if I must get a football fix, there’s the college game, although thanks to the NCAA, that also is dicey. Perhaps as the season goes on, some NFL owner will be desperate for a quarterback, so much so that he’ll be forced to miraculously rediscover his sense of American decency and take on Colin Kaepernick. © 2017 Bob Franken Distributed by King Features Synd.

National Park Discount Is Still a Great Deal If you’d planned to pick up a couple of senior passes to the national parks as part of your autumn leaf-peeping travels, you’ll need to increase your budget. The lifetime access pass has gone from $10 to a whopping $80.

The senior pass (full name: America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass) is a bargain, providing admission to recreation areas run by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service and more.

If you don’t want to pay the $80 all at once, consider a one-year pass for $20. Do that for four years, and you can convert it to a lifetime pass.

There still are ways to visit our parks without breaking the bank. Some parks only charge a few dollars for admission. Others, like the national monuments, are free. Those that do charge have some free days designated each year.

If you’re taking a trip soon, here’s a warning: The parks service is inundated with requests for passes, and you might not get yours before you leave. However, print out the confirmation you receive and take that with you, as well as a picture ID. If you’re planning to buy your pass at the recreation site, phone ahead; many have run out of passes. To buy online, go to yourpassnow.com. You’ll pay an extra $10 processing fee. If you are permanently disabled, you can get a free pass with documentation.

If you already have the $10 lifetime pass, you won’t have to pay for a new one; you’re grandfathered in ... unless you lose the one you now have.

PS Historical Society presents ‘Palm Springs loves Lucy & Desi’ In partnership with Lucie Arnaz, the Palm Springs Historical Society, located at the McCallum Adobe Museum, 221 S. Hotel Paseo and AC3

Bringing new energy, top flight design and exceptional cuisine to Palm Desert

By Alison Elsner In 1946, visionary Cliff Henderson built a grand thoroughfare he called El Paseo and punctuated it with stately palm trees, with the first store on this opulent shopping district opening up a decade later. The most upscale business corridor in the desert has been distinguished by its high end pedigree that attracts shoppers and diners on the hunt for apparel from the likes of Escada and cuisine served up by top restaurateurs such as Wolfgang Puck.

The City of Palm Desert can now add lodging to its El Paseo lineage, with the imminent grand opening of Hotel Paseo, scheduled to fling open its architecturally exquisite doors to the public within a few short weeks.

The highly anticipated hotel was green lighted by city officials in 2013 as part of the city’s long-range property management plan, and it broke ground in November, 2015. Hotel Paseo, a three-story, 150-room luxury boutique hotel just off the main drag of El Paseo, is the city’s first new luxury hotel built in more than 30 years. It now occupies the space formerly used for the big white tent during annual Fashion Week, which has relocated to the upper parking deck at the Gardens on El Paseo.

A $36 million venture, the hotel was designed by Westwood-based architectural firm Gene Fong Associates, with interior design by Los Angeles-based Kay Lang + Associates.

The project is being built by Indian Wells-based Watkins Landmark Construction. The hotel will be independently operated under the Marriott Autograph Collection, which means guests can earn and redeem Marriott rewards.

During the 2017-18 fiscal year, the city of Palm Desert is anticipating $13.6 million revenue from hotel taxes, about $2 million of which will be generated from the two percent increase in the TOT (transient occupancy tax) rate approved by voters in November, 2016. Hotel Paseo will certainly pull its weight in contributing to these revenues, which in turn bodes well for supporting city services.

Here are the features being rolled out from Hotel Paseo: ￭ Sleek lines and luxurious features complemented with a soft neutral palette ￭ One-of-a-kind artwork curated from local artisans in every room ￭ Private balconies showcasing stun-

ning mountain views from virtually every room and suite ￭ Bathrooms with spa-like amenities, glass-enclosed showers and frosted barn door entry ￭ Suites with special amenities like billiard tables, soaking tubs and extralarge balconies ￭ A visually appealing pool with a cabana bar, a rejuvenating AVEDA Spa and a high tech Life Fitness gym One of the more unique attractions will be a super chic, fully renovated, vintage 26 foot 1950 Airstream Cruiser Suite. You read it right. A sleek chrome trailer will be transformed into an overnight getaway, kind of like a highly urban and luxury camping experience.

The other big draw for the Hotel will be the opening of a new, independent, chef-driven restaurant next to the hotel but with its own separate address and unique identity. Far from being a (gasp) hotel restaurant, AC3 Restaurant + Bar is gaining attention as a soon-to-be major attraction unto itself within the desert, bringing the taste of Uptown Palm Springs to El Paseo.

AC3 is a partnership between TRIO

Restaurant owner Tony Marchese and chef Andrew Copley, owner of Copley’s on Palm Canyon, both top dining venues in Palm Springs. AC3 was named as a reference to Copley, his wife Juliana and Marchese’s partnership. Its focus will be on comfort food, fun flavors and New American cuisine. AC3 will offer extensive seating, along with a full bar and barseating section and a patio for those wishing to dine alfresco. (That’s how you say it on El Paseo).

Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Taxing SS Benefits Dear Rusty: My wife started collecting Social Security at her full retirement age of 66. I am 60 and still working, and I think it is unfair that we must add her Social Security earnings to mine when we file taxes. She has also worked some this year. Do we need to add this amount she received to our wages when we file?

Signed: Overtaxed Dear Overtaxed: We regularly hear from people who, like you, are upset to find that their Social Security benefits can contribute to their tax liability.

After all, you paid into Social Security with your taxable earnings so benefits shouldn’t be taxable, right? Well they weren’t when Social Security was first enacted in the late 1930’s. But way back in 1983 Congress changed that to make up to 50% of benefits taxable if your income was over a certain limit, and then in 1993 another income threshold was added to make up to 85% of benefits taxable. And yes, since you’re married and file jointly all of your combined income, including any earnings either of you have, affects the amount of your Social Security benefits that will be taxable. Without getting into the reasons or fairness, here’s how taxing Social Security works: Social Security uses what’s called “provisional income” to determine if your benefits are taxable. Provisional income includes the Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) amount on your tax return, with certain deductions (i.e., tax-

exempt interest) and any non-taxable income added back in, plus 50% of you total Social Security benefit - in other words your total gross income plus half of your total annual Social Security benefit. If your provisional income exceeds certain levels, a portion of your Social Security becomes taxable income; if it doesn’t exceed those limits your benefits aren’t taxable.

The income levels to determine tax liability are different depending upon whether your tax filing status is “single” or “married filing jointly”. Single people with provisional income of $25,000 or less and married couples filing jointly with provisional income of $32,000 or less pay no income taxes on their benefits. For single people with provisional income between $25,000 and $34,000 and married people with provisional income between $32,000 and $44,000, up to 50% of their benefits are taxable. And for those over those income thresholds, up to 85% of benefits are taxable.

If there’s any good news in this, it’s that only your gross income in excess of those thresholds count when computing the amount of your Social Security that is taxable. Take, for example, a couple whose total provisional income is $60,000, about $15,000 of which is one half of their total combined Social Security benefits. Zero percent of the first $32,000 of provisional income is taxable; 50% of the income between $32,000 and

$44,000 ($12,000) is taxable; and 85% of the provisional income over $44,000 is taxable. So to do the math for this example: • 0% of the first $32,000 is taxable Social Security income • 50% of the income between $32,000$44,000 is taxable Social Security income (50% of $12,000 equals $6,000) • 85% of the income amount over $44,000 is taxable Social Security income (85% of $16,000 equals $13,600) These three segments are added together to compute your taxable Social Security income. In this example for a married couple with $60,000 in provisional income, $0+$6000+$13600 equals $19,600 in taxable Social Security income. In other words, $19,600 of their total $30,000 Social Security benefit is taxable (about 65% in this example).

So yes, adding Social Security income to your wages can have tax implications but it is the current law.

Although there are active proposals in Congress to eliminate taxing of Social Security benefits, none have gained enough traction to predict success.

For this reason, you should always consult with a Tax Advisor whenever any additional income might increase your tax liability.

Breakfast for Busy Days

With the new school year upon us, it may be difficult to maintain a healthy meal schedule. Nutrition plays an important role in a successful school year for children and a productive workday for adults. Nutrition and mental alertness go hand in hand.

It’s often said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet 35 to 40 percent of all Americans skip breakfast. The statistics for children are just as alarming -- as many as 48 percent of girls and 32 percent of boys do not eat breakfast every day. Additionally, for many children, breakfast is a trip to a convenience store or a vending machine for a soda and a high-fat, high-sugar pastry. This is definitely not the best choice for the nutrients they need, nor is it cheap.

Children who are nutritionally fit are more likely to have the energy, stamina and self-esteem that enhance their ability to learn. But, as they run out the door with thoughts of seeing old classmates, joining new clubs, participating in school sports and getting good grades, they might not be paying much attention to the proper nutrition needed to accomplish all of this.

For children and teens, a morning meal is especially important to prepare them to meet the challenges of learning. Many studies have shown that those who eat a morning meal tend to perform better in school, score higher on tests, have higher

school attendance and less tardiness, and have better concentration and muscle coordination. Also, children who eat breakfast have fewer hungerinduced stomachaches and are less likely to be overweight.

You can make breakfast fun by planning it with your child. Decide who prepares what and work together to get it done. If your child doesn’t like traditional breakfast foods, don’t worry -- breakfast food can be any food they like, even a slice of pizza.

Keep quick-to-fix foods on hand or get breakfast foods ready the night before, such as mixing a pitcher of juice.

If children say they’re not hungry, start them out with something light like juice or toast, and send them off with a nutritious mid-morning snack such as yogurt, cheese or a bagel.

Some children believe skipping breakfast may help them lose weight, but just the opposite is true. Skipping meals often leads to overeating later in the day. Getting too hungry can lead to a lack of control and the inability to determine when you are full. This can result in consuming more calories than if you had eaten a good breakfast.

Good nutrition is crucial for social, emotional and psychological development. Teaching children how to eat healthy will enable them to establish a foundation of good nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

This easy, make-ahead recipe for peanut butter and jelly scones can be a quick breakfast along with a cup of milk or a smoothie, a lunch-time treat or an after-school snack. It’s also a fun

way to teach your children basic baking skills!

Combine the flours, brown sugar, baking soda, cream of tartar, cinnamon and salt in a food processor.

Pulse to combine.

Add the peanut butter by spoonfuls to the flour mixture. Pulse until the mixture is combined and looks like sand. Transfer to a mixing bowl and stir in the berries.

Stir the yogurt and egg together in a small bowl and add to the flour mixture. Stir with a spoon until combined. Use your hands, if necessary, to ensure that all of the flour is incorporated.

PBJ Scones Ingredients • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1/2 cup whole-wheat pastry flour • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 cup natural unsalted creamy peanut butter • 1 package (5 ounces) mixed dried berries (about 1 cup) • 3/4 cup fat-free vanilla Greek yogurt • 1 large egg

Preparation:

Heat oven to 400 F. Line a heavy baking sheet with parchment paper.

Transfer dough to a lightly floured work surface and gently pat into a circle about 1 inch thick. Cut the dough into 8 equal wedges. Arrange wedges on the baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes, or until lightly browned. Let cool slightly and serve warm. Makes 8 servings.

TIP: Scones can be frozen and then reheated by wrapping them in a damp, food-safe paper towel, and heating on DEFROST in the microwave for 45 seconds.

• In Western cultures, the owl is associated with wisdom, but in some Asian countries, it’s traditionally a symbol of stupidity.

• In the 9th century, a Norseman named Sigurd Eysteinsson earned the name Sigurd the Mighty while helping to lead the Viking conquest of what is now northern Scotland. As part of a continuing effort to expand his Scottish conquest, Sigurd challenged a native ruler, Mael Brigte the Bucktoothed, to a battle. Each leader was supposed to bring 40 men to the battle, but Sigurd broke his own rule and brought 80 warriors. Unsurprisingly, Brigte lost.

After beheading his defeated foe, Sigurd displayed Brigte’s head on his saddle as a trophy of war. He got his just desserts in the end, though; as he rode, Sigurd’s

leg was scratched by Brigte’s buck teeth.

The seemingly insignificant wound festered, and Sigurd the Mighty was killed by the infection.

1927: The Valley’s first golf course planned

O’Donnell Golf Club, a nine-hole private club that was the Coachella Valley’s first golf course, was built

by Thomas A. O’Donnell, an oilman who came to Palm Springs in the mid-1920s. He purchased the Palm Springs land on which the course is now built in 1925. O’Donnell also purchased 750 shares of Whitewater Mutual Water Company and helped it bring fresh water 14 miles from Whitewater Canyon to the desert before anyone knew there was water under the drifting sands of Palm Springs Village. In 1927, O’Donnell then carefully planned and, in the

next few years, built at his own expense the beautiful golf course with its magnificent palm trees, oleanders and tamarisks, and its green carpet of Bermuda and rye grasses. The course never has been allowed to die during all the years since it was constructed and now forms the cushioned turf so greatly appreciated by members and guests. In 1944, O’Donnell organized O’Donnell Golf Club as a private, non-profit club to which he gave a 99-year lease for the golf course, the reservoir property and the 750 shares of Whitewater Mutual stock.
