Think. Buy. Shop Local!

Welcome I

n the past, Loomis has had many “Community Days,” including those that recognized Mother’s Day, the fire department, plums and peaches and, of course, eggplants! This year we are proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the iconic Loomis Eggplant Festival. The Eggplant Festival started on Taylor Road with jazz music and eggplant to poke fun at other fruit and vegetable events. Now the Eggplant Festival takes place off the busy main street and stretches two blocks from the Blue Goose to the High Hand fruit shed. Loomis has embraced its agricultural history with these two refurbished historic buildings, and it seems fitting we celebrate with the purple fruit — Yes, it’s a fruit, not a vegetable. Eggplant might have started as a “joke” but it grows well in Loomis. Some people enjoy eating eggplant while some don’t care for it, but that isn’t the point of the Loomis Eggplant Festival. It’s about bringing the family-friendly community together, a chance to get to know your business owners, and a way to connect. If you’re looking for a bigname entertainer this wouldn’t be the event for you. However, if you are looking to meet your neighbors, enjoying fine local music, doing some shopping, eating and drinking local festival food, or learning some “DIY Back to the Basics” with do-it-yourself demonstrations, then the Loomis Eggplant Festival is the place to be. According to a Facebook post by Judi Bentzien, she and her former husband, Tom Bentzien, now deceased, and their friend Skip Wright founded the Loomis Eggplant Festival. “We did it not only as a spoof on fruit and vegetable festivals but also to put Loomis on the map,” she says in the post. “I am so pleased to see the ultimate success of the once uncelebrated eggplant! Kudos to those wonderful Loomis folks who have carried on this wonderful tradition.” Please join us on Saturday, Oct. 7, to celebrate 30 years of food, music, art and family.

LOOMIS GRAMMAR SCHOOL STUDENTS

HARVEST EGGPLANT BY STEVE ARCHER OF THE LOOMIS NEWS

F

ourth-grade teachers Traci Wade and Kathy Chaffee unleashed 50 of their students recently on the Loomis Grammar School community garden. The students spent part of their morning harvesting eggplant, tomatoes, peppers and strawberries. Visiting the garden to weed and harvest fits into the students’ environmental studies curriculum, according to Chaffee. “They are learning about the life cycles of plants,” Chaffee said. “This is great real-life experience. “They love it,” Chaffee added. “They’ll come out and weed but they love the picking part.” Wade said the students are at the right age to work in the garden. “Fourth grade is old enough to be responsible in the garden,” Wade said. “In class, we talk about the environment.” Some of the produce harvested, a large basket of eggplant, was donated to the Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce. Jenny Knisley, executive director of the chamber, said the eggplant was given away at the Loomis Family Fest. “Last week, the school donated 183 pounds of eggplant,” Knisley said. Closer to October, eggplant from the community garden will again be donated to the chamber to be given away at the Loomis Eggplant Festival. The Eggplant Festival is set for Oct. 7.
