o you ever feel fortunate to live in a community like Granite Bay, and in a region like the Sierra Foothills? I do, and I’m reminded of it all the time.

I have the good fortune to run in the early morning quiet with my dog, Willow, through my neighborhood and out to the trails and beaches of Folsom Lake. The lake looks different every day, rising and falling with the seasons and textured differently with the winds, cloud covers and lighting. Along the trail I often see squirrels, turkeys, rabbits, and various raptors, and occasionally I’ll see deer, skunks and coyotes. Once years ago I even saw a bear. Living in Granite Bay affords me this opportunity.

I also enjoy the changing of the flora with our seasons, with the buckeyes of fall ornamenting our trees, falling off to become baseballs for our kids — or for the kids inside us. Winter envelopes my morning runs in darkness, and yields to breathtaking sunrises and

colorful displays of flowering trees and shrubbery in spring, and to the occasional dip in the lake on warm summer mornings — now lost for another year. Mostly it’s my dog and I enjoying our favorite part of the day in our favorite place, regardless of season, and sometimes I’ll see people I’ve met over the years on the trail, always with a smile and a kind word. Just being in Granite Bay starts my day on the right track, evens my temper and settles me down for my work.

I suppose it’s the people of our area that make it so special to me. There’s the kindliness and caring of the teachers, staff, and fellow parents at our schools; the dedication of the parents who run the local scouting, athletic, and other youth programs which have such profound impact on our kids; the love of the friends and neighbors who formed meal trains for my family during health crises over the past few years; and the incredible spiritual support and inspiration of our local pastor and parishioners.

Maybe you can find these things anywhere if you look hard enough, but I know it’s so much easier in a community like ours, and I feel fortunate that my kids can call Granite Bay their home. If you like, please let me know how you feel too, at bobf@ goldcountrymedia.com. I hope you enjoy the View!

New restaurateur brings franchise to prime real estate on Douglas Boulevard

T

he first thing customers are likely to see at Pete’s Restaurant & Brewhouse in Granite Bay — one of the newest locations for the Sacramento pizza giant, opened May 29 — is the bar.

It’s a full-service liquor station, a centerpiece of brass, glass, handles and television screens one doesn’t usually find at a Pete’s. But for its 13th location and 30th year in business, the franchise has turned to new ideas and new blood, aiming to be a congregating spot that caters to the neighborhood.

It’s a task entrusted to 23-year-old general manager Kay Uppal by his father, Kal, a co-owner of the location and a lifelong veteran of the restaurant industry.

Having relocated from England in 2015 with an economics degree from Cambridge and a mind to follow in his father’s footsteps, Uppal cut his teeth working at Pete’s on J Street in midtown Sacramento last summer. He bused tables, tossed pizzas and waited on customers until he earned managerial status.

“I had no idea it would be this soon, but I thought, if I came to manage (a restaurant) one day, when I’m telling someone to bus a table, I can show them the correct way as opposed to guessing,” he says.

When the former Pete’s on Douglas rebranded itself as GB Alehouse, and the vacant building that was once Piatti Ristorante & Bar came up for sale down the road at 3003 Douglas, Uppal was waiting in the wings. He had some direction — though the other 12 locations are their own spin-offs of the J Street site, he says, the Granite Bay restaurant and future sites will fall under the umbrella of Pete’s

corporate — but took it as a challenge to figure out what the neighborhood wants.

“In England there’s a pub culture: you finish a long day at work, then you go to the local pub, whereas here people will go out to dinner, to a restaurant,” Uppal says. “With my experience in midtown, I thought I had a fairly good grasp on what the Sacramento population wants, and then you come here and it’s a completely different set of expectations. Like in J Street, we didn’t keep wine glasses on the tables, but guests (in Granite Bay) order so much wine, it makes sense here.”

nearby, a fully stocked bar and big TVs were priorities. There are 14 TVs and at least two more coming in, more than 30 beers on draft and a wine list to suit the sophisticated palates of the neighborhood clientele. There’s also a banquet room for private events and two outdoor seating areas, one on either side of the building.

Uppal hired bartender AJ Frampton, a veteran of the midtown bar scene, to create a craft cocktail menu that would appeal to all tastes with variety and surprise. Frampton says he relied on superior alcohol.

continued from page 7 “I wanted to bring some higher quality to the drink menus, to the drinks themselves,” he says. “I didn’t want to get too pretentious. I just wanted to make good drinks … I try to make a drink for everybody’s taste.”

Uppal credits his executive chef Neil Berg with a high standard of quality control, and his assistant manager Ryan Gard-

ner — another restaurant-industry vet imported from Stones Gambling Hall — with helping to keep the operation running.

“My vision of Pete’s is kind of, take Pete’s and ‘class-ify’ it, make it a little more classy, a little more upscale, just to cater to our demographic,” Gardner says. “Like have a really nice wine list, having craft cocktails, some new cutting-edge desserts. People already (know) what Pete’s is, so we just want to take it to the next level.”

Four months into business, Uppal says the reception has been great so far, but the restaurant is still a work in progress.

Besides more TVs and an evolving menu, he’s also adopting the outside patios to be more “user-friendly,” he says — the gently lit outdoor seating area on the corner of Douglas and East Roseville Parkway is a congregating space made for sipping, dining or people-watching.

Beyond that, Uppal trusts that customers will let him know what’s next. But if they’re looking for an answer to almost any Friday-night craving for American food, plus a long list of alcohol options, he’s reasonably sure Pete’s has it covered.

“It’s all the energy of a bar with the approachability of a family restaurant,” he says.

Granite Bay’s Barton Douglas Band is in it for fun

I

f you’re ever in Tony Corado’s neighborhood in Granite Bay, you might hear a few tunes you recognize coming from his garage each week. While it may sound like the Eagles, Tom Petty or even Metallica or Garth Brooks, it’s the Barton Douglas Band, a group of local residents Corado and fellow Granite Bay resident Jeff Jantzen put together that is coming into high demand.

Corado and Jantzen formed the band in 2014 after the two, along with Corado’s neighbor Kyle Kruen, performed a few songs for their wives in Corado’s garage.

“I tell all my neighbors if they ever hear us playing, they are welcome to come in,” Corado said. “We always have a few empty chairs at the back of the garage for visitors.”

Corado said many neighbors have actually taken him up on his offer to stop in

and listen, sometimes singing along with the band.

“In the beginning, I think we only knew how to play about 12 songs,” Corado said. “We are still a work in progress, but our repertoire has now grown to almost 100 songs that we’ve performed for lots of audiences.”

Corado said the Barton Douglas Band is a classic-rock cover band, named after two of Granite Bay’s well-known streets.

While Kruen is no longer a member, the Barton Douglas Band today consists of not only Corado and Jantzen, but also Dennis Brown, Brett McKague, Heather Pimental and Joe Ciotti. Granite Bay resident Mike King is the sound engineer.

Corado mainly plays the guitar, but also contributes vocals, Janzten does guitar, harmonica, drums and vocals on many of the band’s songs. McKague plays

guitar, Brown is the band’s drummer and Pimental and Ciotti complete the band as main vocalists.

Pimental is the only one among them with professional training. She took voice lessons as a teenager, sang at weddings and made a record in the 1980s that made it to the airwaves. Jantzen also had some musical background and was the one who convinced the group to pull it all together.

“We have such an eclectic collection of songs we play,” Jantzen said. “We each have different genres we enjoy yet we all tend to find common ground in classic rock. I gravitate towards hard rock and heavy metal. Our set list and arrangements tend to reflect our individual influences.”

McKague has been playing guitar since he was 14, and he and Jantzen have CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

“Back then we both loved music,” McKague said. “It’s pretty amazing that the circle is complete and after all these years we are playing together in a band.

I’ve changed schools, jobs, relationships, cities, states and many other things but the one constant has been the love of music, particularly the guitar.”

All of the band members have day jobs, with the exception of Corado, a retired fire chief from the South Placer Fire District.

Corado is still a member of the Eureka Union School District Board of Trustees.

McKague is a local lawyer who handles construction disputes and contracts, Pimental works in the office at Ridgeview Elementary School and Ciotti is the owner of Ciotti Cellars Winery in Lincoln.

Jantzen is in sales and marketing for a molecular diagnostics company based in San Diego, and Brown is a project manager for a construction company.

In addition to practicing in Corado’s garage once a week, the Barton Douglas Band has performed at almost 40 venues throughout Placer, Sacramento and El Dorado counties including several winer-

ies, country clubs, restaurants and private parties. While some of these events have had cover or admission charges, the band has never pocketed any of the money.

“At some venues we’ve charged a band fee and we’ve always waived the fee and awarded the money that is collected to a charity,” Corado said.

“That’s the way we set the band up from the very beginning,” Jantzen added. “We never plan to put money in our pocket ... It’s just a fun thing to do and a good way to relief stress.”

Since the band’s inception in 2014, it has donated or raised more than $14,000.

It presented direct donations to such organizations as Courage International, Granite Bay Library, Roseville Home Start-Keaton Raphael Memorial, Northern California Alzheimer’s Association, Petal Connection, Guitars for Vets and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Roseville to name a few.

“We’re all just a bunch of friends with a little bit of time on our hands,” Corado said. “We’re just having fun.”

traps tightened, accordion tuned and hands ready to go, Jim Shoemaker leans toward the nine-person ensemble’s lone tuba player.

As band director John Testa raises his baton, Shoemaker jokes, “OK buddy, you ready to fall in love?”

That’s the title of the first song for the group’s September meeting, of course: “When I Fall in Love.” Each month’s meeting — which is about 10 percent formalities and 90 percent jams — has a different lineup of songs, often seasonally themed.

September features fall songs. July’s are patriotic, December’s are holiday-centered and what else would October feature but German Oktoberfest tunes?

PUMP UP THE JAMS

The Northern California Accordion Society serves as a passion project and social gathering for about 50 paid members and their guests, many of whom are senior citizens. The society formed in the early 1950s, when founders Vince Cukar and Peter Martin got together to play at a former music business in Rocklin. Over the years, the club met at different spots throughout the greater Sacramento area. But they’ve been gathering at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Granite Bay for about five years, according to Shoemaker, who added that members come from as far as West Sacramento and Auburn.

continued from page 14 Each meeting — complete with signin sheets and the Pledge of Allegiance — begins with a multi-song “jam” like this one. Announcements like birthdays and wedding anniversaries come afterward, followed by a dinner break. The meeting ends with more jamming, in the form of solos or smaller ensembles.

Once every three months, according to the club’s treasurer, Klaus Zander, a guest artist will visit. Guest players often rotate for meetings at the other three accordion clubs in Northern California, in Sacramento, Vacaville and Humboldt.

Tonight, at September’s meeting, the guest player is “the best accordion player in the country,” according to Shoemaker.

Mike Zampiceni, whose father was a wellknown music publisher, shakes off the praise as he takes his place at the mic and announces he needs to warm up first.

“I hope you don’t mind,” he says. “I only know it in D minor.”

His fingers lay into the keys and buttons. His warm-up is a musical equivalent of watching a perfect-10 Olympic gymnast take on the pummel horse or balance beam: a display of mastery, speed and grace. A person immersed in obvious passion, he has the hands and memory of someone who has been at this for decades.

And as he continues into the rest of the lineup — a medley of songs inspired by a cross-country road trip he took this summer — the 40 or so attendees are enraptured. As he plays, they are all eyes and ears, heads bobbing, fingers rapping, toes tapping.

FEELING IT OUT

“It’s a difficult instrument to play because you can’t see it,” Zander says before the Zampiceni’s performance. “It’s between your upstairs and your fingers. You can’t look, it’s impossible.”

On most accordions, the player’s right is made up of keys similar to those on the piano, used for a song’s melody. The left side is made up of buttons called basses, which

make up the song’s accompaniment.

Zander explains that, like pianos, an accordion’s sound often depends on what kind of wood it’s made of.

According to member Jan Leathers, the instruments can have as few as eight basses and as many as 120. And if 120 basses aren’t enough, an accordion player could use a “buttonbox,” an accordion with even more buttons in place of the right-side keys. She started playing in 1968, inspired by Mylon Floren on “The Lawrence Welk Show” and drawn to the instrument’s complex sound.

“You can’t get that many layers with a wind instrument,” she says.

Since a full-sized accordion can weigh up to 30 pounds, according to Leathers, she uses a smaller model. There are kid-sized accordions as well, since many players learn at a young age. For instance, member David Lang learned at age 8, while the club’s president, Jerry Keifer, took lessons in Los Angeles as a preteen.

MORE THAN POLKA

In fact, a major component of the Northern California Accordion Society is to educate the community at large about accordions. Members play at local festivals, like last month’s Polish Festival in Roseville. But the meeting fees and raffle ticket payments are put toward three or four annual scholarships for community members who wish to learn to play. Since the club has an older membership, Zander says the scholarships are aimed at younger students who have interest.

The first accordion was patented in 1829, according to Zampiceni. Though it may seem old-fashioned or kitschy in the United States, the instrument is still popular throughout Europe. In countries like Austria, France, Poland, Italy and Zander’s native Germany, it plays a vital role in national music. It takes on a more romantic role in France and Italy, Zander says, but is used in more upbeat, march-like music in Germany. Austria’s forte is waltzes, another common type of tune played on the instrument. On occasion, the accordion appears in Finnish heavy metal.

In Zampiceni’s performance alone, the versatile, quirky instrument crossed lines between waltzes, marches, popular music and even blues.

Near the evening’s end, Keifer leans over and chuckles, “I bet you thought it was all oom-pa-pa.”

Zafia’s Family House

a home away from the hospital

Granite Bay nonprofit aims to build shelter for families fighting long-term illness nyone who has been so close to a long-term illness knows the drill: days and weeks in grey hospital rooms, sleepless nights at bedside chairs, indefinite stints in the ICU. When Robert and Rebecca Fyfe of Granite Bay were holding their daughter Zafia’s hand through the final stages of bone cancer in 2006, they were exhausted, and she knew it. Zafia, 14, imparted a dying wish — that her parents would build a rest home to shelter other families coping with long hospital stays.

More than 11 years later, the Fyfes have established a nonprofit, Zafia’s Family House, and fundraising is underway but far from over. Construction awaits money. They bought land for the house more than a year and a half ago, at 1623 Santa Clara Drive, Roseville, and they’re hosting a fundraiser Oct. 27 at Granite Bay Golf Club.

Rebecca traces the genesis of the project to her daughter’s altruism, evident even from a young age.

“We fell in love with Zafia the first time we saw her. She was a petite little girl, with exotic hazel eyes and a captivating smile that immediately warmed our hearts,” Fyfe says in a video on zafiasfamilyhouse.org. “We were so excited to bring our daughter home to America.”

Adopted from Uzbekistan, Russia in 1995 at the age of 3, Zafia attended schools in Granite Bay and planned to go to college to become a pediatrician.

In 2004, at age 12, pain and swelling in Zafia’s right knee led her to the hospital, where doctors discovered they were symptoms of osteosarcoma.

Fyfe said her daughter fought the disease for two years at various medical facilities, during which time Zafia effectively lived in hospitals for a total of nine months. Some of that time Rebecca and Robert spent at Ronald McDonald House in San Francisco, staying for a week around Zafia’s first surgery right after her initial diagnosis. The house gave Zafia an idea months later, when treatment brought them closer to home but not to comfort.

“She knew what it was like for us to sleep in a hospital, live out of plastic bins and travel back and forth,” Fyfe says. “Before she passed away, she said, ‘Mom, I want you to do something for (kids with cancer), and I don’t know what it is, but one of the ideas that I do have (is), why don’t you build a house? Do something to help the people out, especially the children.”

Zafia died July 1, 2006, and the Fyfes created their foundation in 2011 to implement her vision. Every year since then, more fundraisers have brought it closer to life.

Rebecca describes the goal as a “temporary home away from home” for families coping with illness — a house, more than a sterile hotel, near local hospitals for families to stay overnight with minimal donations if possible.

Fyfe said it will be a two-story home with 12 to 14 bedrooms, serving long-term patients and relatives from nearby Sutter and Kaiser hospitals, which have many stroke and cancer patients, infants in intensive care and a general need for alternatives to hospital beds and chairs.

“When you’re in the hospital day in and day out, you’re committed to that person that’s critically ill. You’re tired, you’re stressed, you’re worried, you’re scared … so the house is a place you can get away from that clinical environment, get away from the doctors and machines and beeping,” Rebecca says. “Families can stay where while the child is critically ill, hospitalized, or if you have a critically ill adult family member, they could stay at the house with minimal donation. And if you cannot afford to pay for a donation, they don’t have to pay.”

Fyfe estimates she’ll need at least $2 million to build the house and maintain its operations for the first few years. She has an architect, the elevation studies are done, Dave Cook is the developer and they’ve already started the process of having easements and entitlements approved, Fyfe says.

Zafia’s Family House has held annual dinner dance fundraisers each April at Morgan Creek Golf Club in years past; but this year Granite Bay Golf Club has volunteered to host a tournament on Oct. 27, all proceeds from which will go to the nonprofit. Costs are $300 for a four-player scramble and $500 to be a sponsor.

Fyfe said people can help make Zafia’s dying wish a reality by volunteering, participating in these fundraisers or making donations at zafiasfamilyhouse.org.

ow do you fly with a load of 10 crowbars in your suitcase? Mark and Debbie Holt of Granite Bay were among those who made a trip to Houston to help with the cleanup of Hurricane Harvey. First, Debbie Holt asked her daughter Kimber Crandall, who lives in Houston, what was needed.

“Underwear!” she said. The shelters were in desperate need of underwear, socks, and diapers. The Holts also knew cleanup volunteers would need tools, gloves and masks, so they loaded their bags with crowbars and hammers as well.

With generous help from local friends, neighbors, and members of their Latter-day Saint church congregation, they were able to fill four suitcases. But the bags now weighed far more than the standard 50 pounds allowed. However, when Delta Airlines heard of their plan, they not only allowed the luggage but

bumped the Holts up to First Class on both flights to Houston.

The Holts stayed and worked for a week as additional donations arrived, via Amazon, to their daughter’s home. They were amazed at the devastation from this monumental flood. But they were grateful to be part of another surge — a flood of goodwill and service from a nation that rallies to help those in need.

Small-town living in kid friendly Treelake Village

M

ichelle Nehrbass and her husband Patrick grew up in small midwestern towns, worlds apart from the Bay Area, where they moved as young adults.

They stayed in the Bay for a while but the pair, along with their two daughters, moved between California and Wisconsin a few times before finding a place to truly call home.

In moving back to Wisconsin, where Patrick is from, Nehrbass hoped her daughters could experience all four seasons.

“We realized it was pretty much just winter and spring,” she said.

After scouring for a home in Roseville, Rocklin, Folsom and El Dorado Hills, they finally found the perfect spot in Granite Bay’s Treelake Villages.

“What really drew us in was the great schools and giving our kids the opportunity to walk to school just like we did,” Nehrbass said.

schools are close to the neighborhood.

Nehrbass said the only school requiring transportation is Cavitt Junior High, and many teachers live in Treelake Villages.

Add in parents volunteering their time for school activities and this makes for a close-knit, involved community.

Nehrbass said sports are another main aspect of living in Treelake. Soccer, baseball and lacrosse are popular, as well as another typical bastion of small-town life: high school football.

“They start ‘em young,” she said.

Residents, especially kids, in Treelake have plenty of places to hone their skills.

The neighborhood has a recently refur-

bished playground for younger kids, while older ones have a soccer field, baseball diamond and other open spaces perfect for tossing a ball around. Those less interested in group sports can fish on small ponds or take to the bike trail, Nehrbass said. Residents also run or walk their dogs along East Roseville Parkway, which bisects the neighborhood.

Sometimes there’s a special amenity: a kid-run lemonade stand on the corner of East Roseville Parkway and Swan Lake.

Though the streets are quiet on a cloudy Thursday morning, since the adults are at work and the kids in school, Nehrbass said the place is bustling on

weekends, with cars lined up against the curb near the park. With over 750 houses, Treelake Village provides plenty of people to hang out with.

Since the subdivision contains hundreds of homes — most are two-story, single-family — Nehrbass admitted it can be difficult to hold gatherings for the entire community. But Treelake does have a semi-annual garage sale among residents, and entire streets will get together at the holidays to celebrate. There may not be a grand parade next month for Thanksgiving, but Nehrbass’s street does get together for a turkey fry.

More informally, she said it’s common

to see parents gathering on a cul-de-sac, glasses of wine in hand, as their kids play together.

Her own daughters, now 18 and 20, grew up playing with 23 other kids in their section of Treelake. Unlike other Granite Bay subdivisions, young families are not a new phenomenon. In the 13 years Nehrbass and her family have lived in the neighborhood, there have always been kids.

When Don Gunderson, 68, moved in to Treelake in 1994, young families were coming in despite high housing prices.

They were attracted to the area because of its schools. Though at the time his older kids had moved on to college, his youngest child graduated from Granite Bay High School.

“The draw was schools,” he said.

“That’s what everyone wants.”

Though Gunderson has since moved to a different neighborhood after call-

ing Treelake home for 10 years, plenty of empty-nesters remain, rounding out its diversity. They’re not taken aback when moving to Treelake, either. The youthful environment is part of the appeal.

“Not every empty-nester lives in Sun City Lincoln Hills,” she said. “They like the sound of children, they want to see the school bus go by.”

Even though Nehrbass and her husband aren’t far from being empty-nesters themselves, having just dropped their youngest daughter off at college in Nevada, they plan on staying in Treelake. They enjoy the neighborhood’s titular trees, many of which are well-established; its sloping topography; its high-end landscaping; and the balance between the area’s bustling lifestyle and tight-knit comforts.

“There’s lots of open space to explore,” Nehrbass said. “And there’s so much to do here, having grown up in a small town.”

hen we look at wine from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, United States and the South American countries, the labeling of wine is relatively easy to comprehend.

The label indicates: • The winery.

• The varietal. Here in the USA, wine must contain at least 75 percent of the primary varietal for it to be labeled as a single varietal; a cabernet sauvignon may contain percentages of merlot and/or petit verdot as long as the percentage of cabernet sauvignon is 75 percent or greater the winery can label the wine as cabernet sauvignon.

• The vintage (what year the grapes were picked).

• The alcohol strength.

Whether the grapes are estate-grown or sourced from another region/appellation. Sometimes the appellation will be listed, for example, as “California.” This would indicate that the grapes for the wine have been sourced from two or more different appellations. The back label may contain the wine’s tasting notes, general information about the winery and website, but it must contain the government health warning. This warning must also appear on all imported wine.

All labels in the USA have to be approved by the Department of Treasury, Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.

Looking at European wines, the labeling becomes more complex, especially In France. If the grapes come from a distinct geographical location it would be labeled accordingly, therefore placing considerable demands on the knowledge of the drinker.

So if you purchase a French wine, there are many more confusing regional labels. These are just a few examples: • Red Burgundy (it’s pinot noir) • White Burgundy or Chablis (it’s chardonnay) • Beaujolais (it’s gamay) • Sancerre (it’s sauvignon blanc) Grapes grown outside these distinct geographical locations would normally be labeled by the grape varietal.

Mr. Richard Larson, the Pumpkin Man! HO M ETOWN HER OES |

I

f you live in Granite Bay and occasionally travel to Folsom Lake through the gate off of Douglas Boulevard, you have most likely seen his small home.

It’s the last one on the right before you turn into the gate, and every year during the summer and fall the home is decorated outside by massive pumpkins growing around the property. The home also has an artsy decorated tree fort and a large outside bocce ball structure. If you didn’t know better, you would think the home was a community center or that homeowners had banded together to make a community garden, the property is so wonderfully maintained. But it’s the home of Mr. Richard Larson — the Pumpkin Man! I first met Richard after my wife and I had enjoyed a day relaxing at the lake. Whenever we visit our favorite sandy cove, I always said to her, “I have to meet the man who owns that home.

What’s the story behind the pumpkins, the tree fort and that massive structure in the middle of the property?”

One day I got the guts to stop by while Richard was outside tending to his property. At first he didn’t want to be bugged and seemingly tried to walk away from this stranger saying hello, but I was able to slow him down and introduce myself. I gave him my card, identified myself and told him I would like to interview him about the meaning behind the massive pumpkins and the various structures dotting his land. We agreed to meet at a later time, and this is what I learned.

Richard was born in Fortuna, California and relocated with his parents at a young age to Sacramento. He attended the now-defunct Norte Del Rio High School, and right after high school he started working in construction building large highrise towers around California.

In his early 20s he was drafted into the US Army and served in Vietnam. When I questioned him about his years of service, I could see his mind shift. His eyes grew pained and he told me he didn’t like to talk about it. I got the hint, having seen this look before when talking to my boys about their years of service in Iraq and Afghanistan. So I quickly changed the subject to pumpkins.

After two years of honorable Army service, Richard returned to high-rise construction where he worked for most of his life and retired as soon as he could at the age of 55.

He purchased his home in Granite Bay 45 years ago, and it became his peaceful place. Richard loves tinkering, creating art and manicuring his land. It helps his mind relax and brings him peace.

Years ago he read a story about Howard Dill, “the Pumpkin King” featured in Ripley’s Believe it or Not books for growing massive award-winning pumpkins. Richard was fascinated by Mr. Dill and decided to try his hand at growing pumpkins.

Rich believes that the large pumpkins and the vines that feed them have a positive energy about them, a life force you can actually feel if you place your hand on one.

Over the years that Rich has been growing these massive gourds, he has entered various competitions around California.

Richard Larson He told me, “The business of growing and competing in pumpkin contests is competitive and the prize money can be rewarding. There are some contests that pay as much as $7 a pound.”

The biggest award-winning pumpkin Richard has grown was 1,300 pounds. That’s a $9,000 prize check! Not bad for a season of work and doing what you love!

However, growing pumpkins takes a great deal of work. The dirt must be perfect, fertilized carefully and expensive nutrients added to help them grow. Then there’s the cost of the seeds, the prize items which can command a steep price too.

I enjoyed meeting Rich very much and plan on returning to visit with him often. Although he looks rugged, I learned he is a special and peaceful man. His property represents his artful mind. With a small tastefully decorated home surrounded by pumpkin vines, a tree fort he built that represents what you might think a hobbit home might look like, and a full-blown professional bocce court. He said the pumpkins, yard art and bocce court help to make him human.

For the month of October, Rich has invited people to stop by and see his pumpkins and maybe purchase one. He’s a kind and peaceful man who wants to make people smile and feel good.

The pumpkins are magical!
