Humanity and Inhumanity

By Bob Franken Hurricane Harvey is such a tragic natural disaster that it’s been impervious to the vigorous attempts to steal the spotlight by that unnatural disaster Donald Trump. His attempts at provocation – like the Joe Arpaio pardon and his usual Twitter outrages – were not enough to deflect our focus. The nation was concentrating instead on the thousands upon thousands of people suffering in the Gulf region, particularly Houston, as the historic deluge drove them from the safety of homes that had been turned into death traps by the rising water.

But the flooding could not sink the heroism of ordinary Americans banding together to assist their neighbors in trouble. Professionals from police forces, fire departments, the Coast Guard and National Guard, along with medical providers, social workers, etc., overcame monstrous conditions to do their jobs and put all their training exercises into real rescue operations. They were joined by a remarkable armada of private citizens; so many who had a boat and a boatload of compassion joined the frenzied effort to save their fellow citizens.

Except for the local officials, who worked tirelessly, the politicians – the national ones who so tarnish this nation – were irrelevant for the moment.

They were shunted aside by the likes of the “Cajun Navy,” dedicated owners of all kinds of floating devices who came from sometimes hundreds of miles away. Many had been bailed out themselves when they were overwhelmed by other catastrophes, and now simply viewed it as their obligation to risk their safety and do whatever they could to help their fellow citizens. Others were opening their homes to the families that had been driven from their own.

No one was the slightest bit con-

cerned about who supported or opposed Donald Trump. There was no discussion about religion or skin color or immigration status. The widespread motivation was a primal urge to help out fellow human beings and, yes, their animals, in a time of dire need.

All too soon, we’ll begin to see the political ugliness resurface. There will be pitched battles over funding as members of Congress jockey to please their constituencies. At the same time, the conservatives, who for the most part oppose efforts to blame climate change, will ignore the obvious signs that global heating contributed to this unprecedented weather.

They also will battle any efforts to inhibit the willy-nilly development that has defined Houston, even though it’s clear that it has stifled the area’s natural ability to combat such attacks by Mother Nature. Simply put, concrete eliminates the soil’s ability to soak up precipitation. It does, however, enrich the concrete manufacturers and all those others with deep pockets who benefit from an ever-widening building boom.

They have succeeded with their influence-peddling in blocking zoning laws or any other attempts to establish even minimal controls. The politicians they have compromised are not about to stand in their way now, just because of some gargantuan disaster, even though it will inevitably happen again.

For the moment, we can bask in the warm glow of ordinary people helping ordinary people in extraordinary ways.

Their service to those who inhabit our extended community provides hope that the worst that nature has to offer cannot snuff out people’s good nature, no matter how cynical our politicians are. © 2017 Bob Franken Distributed by King Features Synd.

Which Flu Shot Is Right for You? It’s that time again ... flu season is on the way.

Vaccines already are available in most locations, so we have no excuse not to get a flu shot soon.

Sometimes the dilemma can be deciding which shot to get. Most flu vaccines contain protection from three strains of influenza, called trivalent vaccines. Those contain two A strains and one B strain of influenza.

Some of them add coverage for a fourth strain. Those shots are called quadrivalent and contain two A and two B strains. With two Bs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention doesn’t have to flip a coin to decide between two equal B vaccines; it can just include both.

In addition, there are high-dose flu shots especially for seniors age 65 and older. As we age, our immune systems don’t respond the same way, and a regular flu shot might not get us the strong immune response we need to avoid the flu.

The strains change every year, which is why most people need to “renew” their flu vaccine each year. The CDC tracks which influenza hits, and when, in making its calculations for the following year. For the 2016-2017 season, it calculated that those who received flu shots reduced their overall risk by 34 percent for A strains and 56 percent for B strains.

Your best (safest) bet: Ask your doctor which flu shot you should get. Some of us under 65 shouldn’t have the high-dose shot for one medical reason or another. Don’t delay; it takes about two weeks to have immune coverage after receiving a shot.

If you have Medicare Part B, the cost of the shot is covered, as well as the vaccine for pneumonia and hepatitis B.

Palm Canyon Theatre opens 21st Season with Oliver!

Straight out of training at the Palm Canyon Theatre’s Summer Kids Camp, about 30 talented young actors, as well as company members and professionals will come together to bring the English musical Oliver! to the stage in Palm Springs. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Original Score, Lionel Bart wrote the Oliver! music and lyrics based on the classic Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist.

Oliver! is set in Victorian England where a malnourished orphan escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the notorious Fagin. Tom Warrick, winner of the Desert Theatre League award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical for his 2009 PCT performance as Fagin will reprise

the role. The show will be led by PCT’s co-artistic director, Se Layne, who will both direct and choreograph the cast that features many company favorites including Allegra Angelo, Amanda Burr, Leslie Benjamin, Natalia Fernandez and Mat Tucker.

Oliver! opens at the Palm Canyon Theatre on Friday, September 22, and runs through Sunday, October 1.

Show times are 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 7 pm on Thursdays.

By Alison Elsner The news hit like a thunderbolt.

Morning breakfast routines were interrupted with phone calls and texts saying that Pattie Daly Caruso had passed away from a heart attack, in her sleep, during the early morning hours of Sunday, September 17, 2017. The harsh words spread like wildfire across social media, leaving friends and admirers in a state of shock and profound sadness to lose this bright light who always put others’ needs and interests above her own. The irony is that she once stated she really didn’t have time

to focus on Facebook, which is easy to understand given the sheer scope of her business, charity, media and personal activity throughout the Coachella Valley and well beyond.

Known for hosting her decadeslong television show, “Valley Views”, which aired on KMIR TV, she taped in recent years at her elegant Palm Desert home, much to the delight of guests who felt more like they were dropping in for a social visit with snacks and appetizers than for a scheduled media appearance. “Valley Views” ran for over 25 years and was the longest running show in the Coachella Valley, cover-

ing local events, celebrities, people and projects throughout this southern California paradise.

Adjectives that jump to mind to describe Caruso include strong, generous, dynamic, charitable, capable, insightful, loving, appreciative, accessible, and ubiquitous. Did we say strong? Her charity work stood out through her bottomless contribution cup of time, treasure and talent along with her zeal to bring guests on her show to highlight their causes.

In 2013, her son, Carson Daly, host of “The Voice” and morning entertainment anchor on the “Today Show”, paid tribute to his mom by honoring Caruso as the person who has inspired him the most, always putting family first and always persevering by “putting one foot in front of the other” in the face of adversity, including during her battle with and recovery from breast cancer.

Born in North Carolina, Caruso had her first radio show, “Pat’s Platter Party”, on an ABC affiliate when she was 17. Years later, after “graduating” from the Pasadena Playhouse, she had her first television show on a Fox affiliate which culminated in her becoming President of PDC Entertainment.

Caruso hosted and participated in dozens – probably hundreds - of events, including “It’s Everyone’s Fight” for the American Cancer Society, “Holiday Voices” for the Eisenhower Medical Center Auxiliary, Coachella Valley BookPALS, Desert Cancer Foundation, Theresa A. Mike Scholarship Foundation, Red Carpet interviews for Palm Springs Women in Film and Television (PSWIFT) Broken Glass Awards and many others.

She was a spokesperson for the Ronald McDonald House and received the acclaimed National Communicator Award for outstanding programs on “Valley Views.” She was a reporter for CBS Local 2’s “Eye on the Desert.”

She was also named “Desert Woman of the Year” (2002), “First Lady of the Desert” (1998), “Television Woman of the Year” (1997) and Athena Award honoree (2003). She was featured on MTV’s “Celebrity Moms” and ESPN’s Jimmy V. Celebrity Golf Classic. On Mother’s Day 2004, Pattie was one of

David Letterman’s “Top Ten Moms”, and she was a recipient of Lifetime Television’s 2004 Hero award for her commitment to raising awareness and research for breast cancer. In 2009, Pattie received a Star on the Walk of Stars in Palm Springs.

Caruso founded and chaired the Coachella Valley’s “Media Mavens”, an organization of “Ladies of Radio, Television, Print, PR and Marketing in the Palm Springs/Coachella Valley Area”, which advanced networking and empowerment for female public relations and media professionals.

In addition to her son, Carson Daly, she leaves behind her retired husband Richard Caruso, daughter, Quinn, an executive for Coburn Communication and five grandchildren.

Pretty much everyone who knew Caruso has a story about how she helped them or lifted them up in some way. She had a special gift of combining extreme notoriety with a total lack of pretense…a solid sense of self. Her reach was broad.

Pattie Daly Caruso, who would answer to nicknames “Sparky” and “Kiki”, was an actress, dancer, writer, producer, humanitarian, media host, wife, mother, and grandmother.

Whatever her role, she will likely be remembered the most for her love of life and her unwavering spirit and sincerity in making others feel esteemed, important and validated in her warm and welcoming eyes. Anyone whose life Caruso touched received the ultimate gift of positive energy and affirmation, and her influence will burn brightly forever.

By Tony Rizzo HOLLYWOOD – Mark Wahlberg tops Forbes Magazine’s list of highest-paid actors for 2017 with $68 million (pretax), thanks to “Transformers: The Last Knight”; “Daddy’s Home 2,” arriving Nov. 10, with Will Ferrell and Mel Gibson; and the ironically titled “All the Money In the World,” with Michelle Williams and Kevin Spacey, due Dec. 8.

This doesn’t include the fortune he’s making from Spectrum commercials and “Wahlburgers” (the series and the hamburger joints). He also makes big bucks for producing.

No. 2 is “The Rock,” Dwayne Johnson, up $50 million this year with $65 million from “Baywatch,” “Jumanji” (out Dec. 20), “Rampage” (coming April 20), “Skyscraper” (July 13 release) and “Fighting With My Family.” He also added coin for successfully producing.

Another actor producing for really big bucks is Vin Diesel, whose slice of the billion-dollar grosser “The Fate of the Furious,” made him No. 3 at $54 million, with help from “The Return of Xander Cage” and “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.”

There’s no bad smells in my closet, even with a hamper full of workout wear.” -- E.L. in South Carolina • “Pickle juice: What is it good for? Lots! You can drink it if you have a muscle cramp, or in the summer when it’s really hot and you’re working out to keep from getting dehydrated.

Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Survivor’s benefits and the RIB LIM (benefit limit) Dear Rusty: My friend and I, both very recently widowed, were discussing our future and, based upon the suggestion of other friends, need to explore applying to Social Security for survivor’s benefits.

We’ve tried to research this online and by talking to another widowed friend, but we’ve ended up more uncertain than ever about whether we’re even eligible. We’re both in our 50’s, and we sure could use some help understanding our options.

Signed: Needing to Know Dear Needing: To tackle this somewhat complicated topic, let’s first understand that the Full Retirement Age (FRA) for widows and widowers is different from Social Security’s normal full retirement age. Widow(er)s get a two year dispensation on their birthdate, meaning that their FRA is computed as though they were born two years earlier than their actual birthdate, resulting in an earlier FRA (which affects when they can collect their full survivor’s benefit). The eligibility rules for survivor’s benefits are as follows: • Widow(er)s become eligible for reduced survivor’s benefits at age 60 (50 if they’re disabled) rather than the normal 62, and they must have been married to the deceased for at least 9 months (unless the death was accidental).

• Widow(er)s may be eligible for survivor’s benefits at any age if they are caring for the deceased’s dependent child who is under 16 years of age, or child who is disabled and collecting benefits based on the deceased’s work record. Note, too, that in addition to the widow(er), dependent children under the age of 18 (or 19 if still in school) may be able to receive survivor’s benefits also.

• A widow(er) who remarries before becoming eligible cannot collect survivor’s benefits on the deceased spouse’s record; remarriage after age 60 (or age 50 if disabled) is okay.

• The survivor eligibility requirement for divorced spouses is different. A divorced spouse must have been married to the deceased for at least 10 years and divorced for at least 2 years to be eligible for widow(er)s benefits.

Although you may be eligible to receive survivor benefits earlier than your full retirement age, to do so will mean that your benefit will be reduced by as much as 28.5%. Waiting beyond your initial eligibility date will earn another 0.00475% for each month deferred, up to the “widow limit”, often referred to as RIB LIM (Retirement Insurance Benefit Limit). If the survivor starts benefits earlier than their FRA, RIB LIM

caps their benefit at the larger of a) the amount the deceased would receive if he or she were still alive, or b) if the deceased claimed prior to their FRA, 82.5% of the deceased’s benefit at FRA. To simplify what this means, if the deceased started benefits at FRA or later, the widow(er) would (at FRA) be entitled to 100% of the amount the deceased was collecting. But if the deceased had started benefits before their FRA, the widow(er) would (at FRA) be entitled to a minimum of 82.5% of the amount the deceased’s primary insurance amount (PIA), the amount the deceased would have gotten at FRA. Basically, the “widow’s limit”, or RIB LIM, only applies if the deceased started benefits before their full retirement age.

And one final note: While waiting until your widow’s full retirement age to apply will give you the largest payment, since survivor’s benefits do not earn Delayed Retirement Credits there is no reason to wait beyond your full retirement age to start collecting. And if your deceased spouse or ex-spouse took their benefit early, you may actually reach the maximum survivor benefit before you reach your widow FRA. Recipe of the Week Kitchen Diva

Casseroles to the Rescue Last night, while surveying my freezer and refrigerator for quick dinner ingredients, I decided to make a casserole. When I was a new bride and college student in 1975, casseroles were the remedy for my woefully limited cooking skills and lack of time. Today, I consider casseroles the perfect dish for a budget-friendly meal, and a way to stock my freezer with crowdpleasing dishes that can be easily reheated in the microwave. Today, with the popularity of all things retro, casserole recipes are making a comeback!

The wonderful thing about casseroles is their versatility. If a recipe calls for a particular ingredient and you don’t have it on hand, you can easily substitute to suit your needs.

A casserole describes both the container and the contents. Casseroles have been prepared since the earliest times and can be a savory or sweet dish. They became popular in America during the Depression and grew in popularity into the 1940s. Then and now, in times of economic hardship, a casserole is a great way to feed a family on a budget.

Cream of mushroom soup was introduced in 1934 and became the “go-to” canned staple as a soup and sauce, especially in casseroles. Tuna Noodle Casserole was an old recipe popularized by the home economists at the Campbell Soup Company. The

original recipe contained canned tuna, which had been slow to gain popularity, egg noodles, hard-cooked eggs and slices of pimento cheese topped with cereal flakes that had been tossed with butter.

In the 1950s, convenience was the main reason for the continuing popularity of casseroles. Modern cooks liked the ease of opening a few cans and packages to create a meal. In 1955, the Campbell Soup Company popularized Green Bean Casserole containing its Cream of Mushroom soup. It has continued to be a holiday favorite.

This recipe for Roasted Chicken and Macaroni Casserole is a retro classic with a few modern twists that will stand the test of time.

Retro Roasted Chicken and Macaroni Casserole This recipe is the perfect dish for using leftover chicken, a rotisserie chicken or leftover, diced turkey.

Cooked ground chicken or turkey also works well. This dish can be prepared ahead, frozen and then reheated for a quick weeknight meal.

Ingredients Serves: 6 • 5 tablespoons butter • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced • 1 cup sliced green onions • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour • 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning • 1 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 2 cups chicken broth • 3 cups diced cooked chicken • 10 ounces frozen, chopped broccoli, thawed and well-drained; or 1 1/2 cup fresh, chopped • 1 cup milk • 1/2 cup mild salsa • 2 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese, sharp or mild • 8 ounces elbow macaroni, cooked according to package directions and drained • 1 cup fresh, fine breadcrumbs • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Preparation:

Heat oven to 350 F. Lightly oil or butter a 3-quart baking dish.

Heat butter in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium-low heat.

Add the mushrooms and cook, stirring, until mushrooms are tender.

Add the green onions and garlic and cook for 1 minute longer. Stir in flour, poultry seasoning, salt, pepper and cayenne until incorporated and bubbly. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes.

Add chicken broth to the mushroom mixture and cook, stirring, until mixture comes to a boil and thickens, stirring occasionally, about 2 minutes.

Stir in the cooked chicken and frozen or fresh chopped broccoli. Add milk, salsa and 2 cups of the cheese, and adjust seasoning to taste. Stir in cooked and drained macaroni, and then spoon mixture into prepared baking dish.

In a bowl, toss breadcrumbs with the melted butter and the remaining 1/2 cup cheese, and sprinkle it over the casserole.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the topping is browned and casserole is bubbly around the edges.

By Freddy Groves OpGrat Takes On Hurricane Harvey You’ve read here about Operation Gratitude, the amazing group that sends care packages to active military in harm’s way, dependents, wounded warriors, new recruits and first responders. Over the years, it has sent out 1.8 million packages, averaging a quarter million packages each year.

That’s not all they do. During the horror of Hurricane Harvey, OpGrat sent truckloads of much-needed supplies to hard-hit areas in Texas and Louisiana. The first day alone, 10 pallets of goods left California for the damaged areas. More than 900 people showed up to help collect, sort and pack much-needed items. Within days, another 39 pallets were ready to ship.

People have stepped up in other ways, using OpGrat as a kind of clearinghouse to get a message out. A group in California arranged to send 500 bales of alfalfa to Texas to feed horses displaced by the floods.

Once the chaos starts to subside in Texas and Louisiana, volunteers

will be sending out First Responder “Thank You” kits. That’s where they’ll need more help in the coming weeks.

Betsy: Chihuahua, Papillon, Adult Hello, everyone! My name is Betsy and I’m a female Chihuahua/Papillon mix.

Some people may say I’m a “Pap-chi. or a Chi-pap!” Now that’s something different!

I’m about 4-5 years old and my medium-length coat is white and brownish.

I weigh about 10 pounds and I’ve totally finished growing. That means I’m light enough for you to pick me up to cuddle with or to take me with you when you go out. And I love cuddling and kissing because I’m a very sweet little girl. I would make a wonderful companion for you because I’m very affectionate and I get along

with other dogs as well as people. I’m a happy dog who has her own cute smile–just look at my picture! I’m also mellow and dainty–like a little lady with light blueeyes!

Please come visit me to see if we’d make a good match– I’d love nothing more than finding my place in your heart and home. I do so much want a home of my own after being in a homeless camp in Coachella–I was so uncomfortable in the heat!

I’m very happy at Pet Rescue in my air-conditioned condo, but I’d still love to find my forever home. I’m all ready to go home with you! I look forward to meeting you!
