CRITTERS

Critters in our Desert Stay safe while showing respect

By Alison Elsner

L

iving in the Sonoran desert brings many delights like the scenic landscape, toasty temperatures and abundance of fitness and outdoor exploration opportunities. There are some overwhelmingly beautiful examples of plant and animal life that can take our breath away. However, nature and wildlife deserve our respect so we can live in harmony. We may encounter animal friends on hiking trails, in our homes or just outside while picking up our mail (us, not the animals). It makes good sense to be aware of what’s out there and what we should do if we come face to stinger or snout with some of these cohabitants. Here are a few winged, furry and scaled neighbors we are likely to see: Africanized honey bees: There was a local news story in 2014 about a woman who was stung 1,000 times on the grounds of a 6 |

country club, and, although she went into shock, she was raced to the hospital and recovered. According to the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District in Indio, bees are not aggressive unless they feel threatened. They are also attracted to strong perfumes and shiny objects, and they are bothered by loud noises. Workers trimming trees have been known to disrupt hives, as well. Africanized Honey Bees, or “killer bees”, came to the Coachella Valley in the early 2000s and are known for being very protective of their home and easily disturbed. But all bees will be aggressive if disturbed. The best action is to stay away from the bees, as in leave them alone. If they do attack, run away. Do not swat or flail your arms because the movement could attract the bees. Be prepared to run up to a quarter of a mile until you can find shelter, as that’s about how far they’ll stray from their hive. While escaping, try to protect your face and

throat with a jacket or shirt. And avoid getting into water because bees will wait until you come up for air. And, as hard as it may be not to panic, try not to harm the pollinating bees. Professionals should be called in to remove the hives if needed. More information: Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District, 760-342-8287 or cvmvcd.org. Bobcats: “Here, kitty kitty” probably won’t work to befriend these guys. According to experts, there are more than 100,000 bobcats in California, many of them living here in the desert. The sightings in people’s backyards are due to the cats’ desire for food, and there have been sightings in Palm Springs and Indio in recent years as cats come down off the mountain. These big cats are fairly comfortable living in close proximity to us but pose little danger to humans, and reports of attacks on humans are rare. However, bobcats will fight if they are cornered. The real concern with these beauties is that they pose a risk to family pets such as dogs, smaller cats and rabbits. Bobcats will also prey on squirrels, chipmunks and other small

mammals and birds, which is why they are often seen close to active bird feeders during winter months. According to experts, if you ever encounter a bobcat in your backyard or around your neighborhood, there’s no need to panic because they will likely be shy with humans. Zoo officials generally agree to just enjoy and appreciate these elegant ones. More information: The Living Desert, 760-346-5694, livingdesert.org Rattlesnakes: The most common rattlesnakes in our southern California and desert region are the Southern Pacific, Red Diamond, Western Diamondback, Sidewinder, Southwestern Speckled, and the Mojave Green. Venom can paralyze and kill, and fangs can still inject venom even after a snake is believed to be dead. And, they don’t always shake that rattle when preparing to attack. Warm summer and fall months mean there are more snakes around, out of winter hibernation. Many are active at night, when they hunt and eat rodents, other reptiles, and insects. Rattlesnakes linger in tall grass, near woodpiles, around rocks, under garden shrubs and CONTINUED ON PAGE 8 >>>

against the sides of houses. They like cool, shady places in summer heat, such as under a lawn chair. When in the wild, humans should wear pants and closed toe shoes. Just like with bees, the best advice is to simply not bother or threaten the snakes and keep a minimum distance of six feet away. Don’t step or reach into hidden places. Don’t ever handle or try to kill a rattlesnake, according to the Riverside County Department of Animal Services. A snake bite can cause nerve and tissue damage and blood-clotting problems. If bitten, don’t attempt first-aid or tourniquets. Do keep the bitten area below the heart, remove all rings and watches that might constrict swelling and head straight to a hospital or emergency room to receive anti-venom immediately. More information: Riverside County Department of Animal Services, 760-343-3644 or rcdas.org. Coyotes: These frequently encountered creatures are cunning and resourceful. They’re not looking to hurt us but usually are motivated by food, water and protecting their families, much like every other living being. The best way to avoid coyote encounters is to do simple things like keep lids on trash cans, pick up fallen fruit, empty stand8 |

ing water containers and keep pets indoors when you aren’t with them (even though attacks can happen during a short dog walk). Don’t ever try to poison or kill the coyotes with guns or weapons. Not only is it cruel if they have a den of hungry pups waiting, but also it creates more problems than it solves by opening up the habitable territory to another predator. If you do end up getting a little too close and can’t get inside to your home or car quickly, then you should “haze” the coyote by making loud noises and throwing rocks or pebbles in its direction. The goal is to keep the animal afraid to approach humans and avoid future interaction while not harming them. More information: Humane Society of the United States, hsus.org. There are hundreds of other species to be found in our desert region, like the Agile Kangaroo Bat, Black-tailed Jackrabbit, Costa’s Hummingbird, Chuckwalla, Desert Bighorn Sheep, Greater Roadrunner, Sandstone Night Lizard and many more, most all of which are as uninterested in getting as up close and personal with us as we are with them. Most of these are so timid around humans that we rarely even see them. When we do have a sighting, we can enjoy the special visit and the display of nature at its most colorful and wondrous.

SURVIVAL

Preparing yourself for

the 'Big One’

By Gary Willhide

C

alifornia is no stranger to natural disasters. While hurricanes and tornados are rare, the big fear is earthquakes. The Coachella Valley sits right on the San Andreas fault, which experts say is “overdue” for a 7.0 or bigger shaker. Of lesser concern in the Coachella Valley are fires, floods and major windstorms. The last major earthquake in Southern California was the 1994 Northridge quake in the Los Angeles area, which measured 6.7. State records show that significant damage was incurred by more than half of the mobile homes in a broad area cutting across the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys and eastern Ventura County. In all, 175 mobile homes caught fire, 4,466 were knocked off their foundations and 955 shifted. Do I have your attention? California mobile home park managers are required by

law to have a detailed emergency plan. Royal Palms, a 50-plus year old community in Cathedral City with 485 home lots, has a complete plan that includes evacuation procedures, zone assignments to check on every home to determine rescue needs, a storage shed with rescue equipment, and a generator large enough to keep the power on in the community clubhouse, which will become a shelter for residents, assuming it is not seriously damaged. Ali Cornwell, manager, and Brian Tosti, assistant manager, will head up the team of Royal Palms employees assigned to implement emergency response. “Many of our crew have been here 20 or 30 years or more and have developed close relationships with many of the residents. We’re sure they will be here to help with the response to any emergency,” Cornwell said. For residents, emergency preparedness is a two-pronged activity.

16 | 2017 VALLEY BASICS FOR OUR PARK COMMUNITIES | SEPTEMBER 2017

SURVIVAL

First: Preparing your mobile or manufactured home. Newer manufactured homes are usually better equipped to withstand a quake than older mobile homes. They normally sit on better foundations and are made of stronger components. In any event, there are steps you can take to protect your home and your valuables. All mobile and manufactured homes should be equipped with an Earthquake Restraint Bracing System (ERBS). These systems are manufactured and sold by several companies, and, in California, must be certified by the Department of Housing and Community Development. The concept is a simple one. The ERBS system is made up of two strong crossbeams underneath the mobile home structure that are supported by wide footings. In the event of an earthquake, if the individual piers that the home sits on give way, the crossbeams of the ERBS will hold the mobile home in place in its upright position. Inside, large cabinets, dressers, televisions and other valuable items can be protected by a brace that, in effect, “ties” the furniture to the wall and keeps the it from tipping or falling. A product called museum wax can be used to keep valuables from falling off shelves. These products are readily available at hardware and big box stores. Fires from ruptured gas lines are one of the biggest causes of damage following a major earthquake. Installing safety shutoff valves and flexible connections can mitigate this danger. Homeowners should learn how to shut off the main gas, electric and water lines if needed. Second: Preparing yourself and your family to survive three to seven days without power, water, shelter, transportation. Matt Springer, a consultant in the San Francisco area who gives talks on “Home Preparedness in Earthquake Country” includes these emergency kit recommendations on his website (earthquake.matthewlspringer.com).

Emergency food supplies can be gathered independently or purchased, like these supplies from Mountain House.

• Food (non-perishable) • Water (for 3-7 days) • Can opener, utensils • First aid kit • Spare shirt, pants • Work gloves • Cash (small bills) • Emergency blankets (foil) • Hand warmers • Water purification tablets • Radio/flashlight (battery-handcrank-solar) • Spare batteries • Light sticks • Whistle • Pocket knife • Paper pad • Marking pen • Duct tape • Ziploc bags • Rain ponchos •Vitamins and personal medications • Personal sanitary supplies • Spare eyeglasses • Pet supplies • Out-of-town contact info • Back-ups of important insurance information (with a relative or online) The emergency kit should be kept in the home near a door. A plastic tub or a fresh garbage can with a lid makes a good container.

NATURE

Know Your Neighbors Living in Harmony with Coyotes By Alison Elsner

T

here are thousands of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects going about their work each day here in the Coachella Valley, out of sight to us. Some are plentiful, and some, sadly, are threatened or endangered. The coyote is one of the most visible and frequently encountered. Fortunately, they are also categorized as stable / non-threatened, and there are things we can do as humans to keep it that way. Many of us, as desert dwellers, have a story about the time we came face to face with a handsome coyote family while out for our evening walk or how Fido or Fluffy just barely avoided becoming a tasty snack. A close encounter is possible when we least expect it, especially when considering the sheer strength, stealth and cunning of these powerful and resourceful creatures. But, it’s helpful to keep in mind that WE moved into THEIR habitat. In the end, we are seeking the same

things: food, water, safety in our homes and the ability to protect our families. The more we educate ourselves about our local fauna and realize that there are common-sense ways to live together in this desert ecosystem, the more likely we are to peacefully co-exist and maintain a healthy respect for what nature has to offer here in this northern extension of the of the Colorado desert. Part of the dog family (canidae), the coyote’s scientific name, Canis latrans, means “barking dog.” These highly adaptable omnivores will eat anything from small

NATURE

mammals, reptiles, rodents and arthropods (like scorpions and crickets) to plant material such as fruit, seeds, beans, fan palm fruit and dates. Nocturnal hunters, they are valuable as rodent control. Their only predator is man. Coyotes communicate using scent, body language and vocalization. They roam extensively throughout their territory, hunting, resting and sleeping where comfortable, living in a den only when raising pups. Coyotes usually mate for life, and breeding takes place between January and March. If you see a group of three to six coyotes, it is most likely a mated pair and their young of the year or a group of litter mates. Here are some steps we can take to keep yourself and your pets safe as well as to protect the survival of this spectacular species: • Keep secure lids on garbage cans and compost bins. • Remove standing water including outdoor pet water bowls. • Collect fruit that has fallen to the ground from fruit trees. • Keep cats and small dogs indoors unless outside with them, and bring them in at night when hunting coyotes are most active. • Do NOT try to feed or tame coyotes. This type of habituation can cause the coyote to see the human as a source of food, leading to overly aggressive coyote populations who no longer fear humans. California Department of Fish and Game even coordinates a campaign called “Keep Me Wild,” which protects both humans and coyotes. • Do NOT try to “eradicate” coyote populations with poison and fire arms. Not only is this cruel if the coyotes have a den of pups

waiting to be fed, but also it opens up the habitable territory for another searching predator to make its own and creates more problems than it solves. So, what if you are unloading your groceries (a true tale for this writer) and you look up to see six coyotes standing bolt still on the golf course staring right back at you? If you can’t quickly get inside to your home or car, and especially if a coyote starts to approach you, it is strongly advised that you make loud noises to “haze” the coyote and even throw rocks or pebbles towards the animal. Remember, the goal is to keep them in fear of humans to avoid future interaction, without causing harm. The Humane Society’s website at hsus. org has other suggestions on how to live in harmony with our furry, feathered or scaly neighbors, and livingdesert.org also offers some very useful information. A wild coyote is a safe coyote.

Secret of Mobile Home Maintenance AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION

A new metal roof being installed on a doublewide.

L

ike a head of hair, mobile and manufactured homes require continuing maintenance to make them look good and last long. Manufacturers and contractors list tips on their websites to help homeowners, especially newer ones, keep on top of their maintenance challenges. Almost all of them prioritize two major needs: 1. Leveling and earthquake bracing. Mobile homes, through ground erosion and

other causes, lose their level. This can be noticed when floors squeak, windows and doors become hard to open and close and cracks form in the walls. Call a contractor to handle re-leveling. When re-leveling, the earthquake bracing should be checked and, if there is no bracing, get it! While you are under your home, check skirting for damage and proper ventilation. 2. Roof maintenance and gutter cleaning. Mobile homes have various types of roofs. Newer ones tend to have peaked roofs and shingles. Some also have metal or rubber roofs. Older flat roofs have foam or rub-

ber material that can bubble and crack and need reinforced with new coats on a regular basis. Signs of roof problems include sagging or bowing of ceilings, walls or siding, dark spots on ceiling or walls and peeling wallpaper or paint. Gutters full of leaves and other debris can back up and cause water to gather and cause roof damage. Roofs should be inspected every year or two by a qualified professional. Gutters should be cleaned regularly. The faster a leak is found, the less damage it can cause. For serious roof problems, the homeowner may want to consider a new metal roof, which can be installed over the old roof on any age unit. Now that you have taken care of these major issues, we will list other tips from the contractors: 3. Check any areas of the frame that look scratched or damaged, since this can lead to rust and corrosion. Touching up with a quality paint (e.g., Rust-oleum) can often solve this problem.

4. Check caulking around vents, windows and doors for cracking and peeling. Recaulk. 5. Both interior and exterior painting should be refreshed on a regular basis (every four or five years, depending on conditions.) 6. Exteriors can be power washed occasionally. Take care with a power washer and make sure you follow all directions. 7. Your heating and air conditioning systems should be checked regularly and the filters should be replaced. Many HVAC companies offer two annual inspections at a reasonable cost. 8. For do it yourself projects, know the measurements of your home (windows, doors, tubs, faucets, etc.) Mobile home measurements are often different from replacement items found at big box stores. Properly maintained, the life of a mobile home can be indefinite.
