Welcome to the Fall/Winter edition of
VERY NAPA VALLEY Our latest issue of VERY NAPA VALLEY is filled with fun stories that will invite you to TASTE, SEE & FEEL more of the Napa Valley. A growing trend in the Napa Valley is the addition of food with wine tasting. Although the charcuterie and cheese plates are very prevalent, the addition of in-house winery chefs and their culinary offerings is becoming very popular. These chefs are cooking up a storm to pair with the wines and share an extraordinary culinary experience. You may not know much about the history of many of the wineries and their buildings in the Napa Valley, many have been preserved, restored or transitioned to house winemaking and/or tastings for visitors through the years. In addition, when exploring the new CIA at Copia, there is the “Wine Hall of Fame” to expand your knowledge of the people responsible for the history of wine in the Napa Valley. If you are in search of some amazing wines while traveling further up the valley, then check out our “Wineries of Distinction.” Take your time and explore not only the wine but the views from many of these properties high above the valley floor. Last but not least….don’t forget the Napa Valley Art Scene, there are several music venues, museums (for more history), art galleries and more. Check our extensive Wine Country events listing, too!

Napa Valley Arts & Entertainment Much to Do and See Napa locals used to joke that the sidewalks rolled up at six in the evening. Today these same sidewalks are filled with sculpture; and beyond them, throughout the valley, there’s a vibrant, evolving art scene to explore, from art walks in Napa and Yountville to a full roster of live entertainment. In autumn, activities move indoors, but there’s an opportunity to meet many of the artists who make the valley their home during the annual Open Studios tour. Sponsored by the Arts Association Napa Valley, the 2017 self-guided tours will involve 62 artists, and take place on September 16 and 17 and September 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For maps and more information, visit the webite at artnv.org, call (707) 254-2085, or drop by the association’s gallery at 1307 First Street, Napa.

DI ROSA’S RESIDENCE GALLERY | PHOTO BY ISRAEL VALENCIA, COURTESY DI ROSA, NAPA
While many wineries are home to impressive art exhibits, (see sidebar), the most spectacular collection, by far, is at di Rosa, a 217-acre art and nature preserve in the Carneros region. Here the late Rene and Veronica di Rosa amassed an extensive collection of art from modern regional artists. Visitors can drop into the lakeside Gatehouse Gallery at di Rosa to see the latest revolving exhibitions, but for a more extended visit, make reservations to board a whimsical tram, painted like a black and white cow, which transports guests up the hill to visit the art-filled di Rosa home and galleries that house the permanent collection. The Gatehouse Gallery is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Admission is $5, $12 for the guided tour. For information and reservations about other tours and activities including the Art and Nature Hike, visit dirosaart.org, email tours@dirosa.com or call (707) 226-5991, ext. 25. Two other destinations worth a stop for art lovers are close to each other just east of the town of Napa. The Gordon Huether Studio and Gallery, at 1821 Monticello Road, is the work place for the Napa native whose art installations are around the world as well as in Napa. It’s open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. gordonhuether.com | (707) 255-5954.
NAPA VALLEY MUSEUM
18
Around the corner at 1019 Atlas Peak Road is the Jessel Gallery, run for 25 years by artist Jessel Miller, who also showcases the work of other artists and craftspeople in revolving exhibits. As a bonus, check out the back room of the gallery where the fashionista artist sells contemporary consignment and new clothing. The gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. jesselgallery.com | (707) 257-2350. For an introduction to the valley’s history as well as exciting works of art, plan a visit to the Napa Valley Museum. Located on the lush grounds of the Veterans Home in Yountville, the Museum tells the valley’s story beginning with the early Wappo residents and continuing through a history of the local winemaking families who put the Napa Valley on the cultural map. In its Main Gallery, the Museum presents a changing series of world-class exhibits by major artists, while the Spotlight Gallery features the work of emerging and established artists and craftspersons, as well as student exhibitions. napavalleymuseum.org | (707) 944-0500 Also, for museum-lovers, the valley has two tiny specialty museums. The Sharpsteen Museum, at 1311 Washington St., in Calistoga, was created by Ben Sharpsteen, a former Walt Disney employee, who created a museum for local history that also includes memorabilia of his career. www.sharpsteenmuseum.com | (707) 341-2443 The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, at 1490 Library Lane, in St. Helena, has the largest collection on public display of “Stevensoniana” from the writer of Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Stevenson’s honeymoon in the hills of Calistoga inspired the book “Silverado Squatters.” He also penned one of the valley’s alltime favorite lines “Wine is bottled poetry.” The museum connects the human experience with the life, times and works of Robert Louis Stevenson. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. or by appointment. www.stevensonmuseum.org | (707) 963-3757
Live Entertainment The newest addition to the Napa nightlife scene is Blue Note, the West Coast outpost of the famed New York jazz club, which has locations in Milan, Beijing, Tokoyo and Honolulu. Blue Note Napa presents two shows nightly downstairs in the historic Napa Valley Opera House, where dinner service, wine and craft beers are available. In the upstairs ballroom, concerts by artists from genres beyond jazz take place; many are presented by Latitude 38, the organizers of Napa’s BottleRock music festival. www.bluenotenapa.com | (707) 880-2300 Also in the town of Napa is the Uptown Theatre, a former 1930s movie house, restored to its early grandeur by Napa native George Altamura. Today, it presents live music as well as stand-up comedy. www.uptowntheatrenapa.com | (707) 259-0123 VERY NAPA VALLEY

St. Helena has also recently opened a Performing Arts Center at St. Helena High School. 1401 Grayson Ave., St. Helena. www.sthelenadrama.com. Beyond this, visitors will find a variety of live music performances at many of the valley’s restaurants. Noteworthy are the Hydro Bar and Grill and Brannan’s Grill in Calistoga, and Downtown Joe’s and Ca’Momi Osteria in Napa. In the mood to dance? Try Napkins Bar & Grill in Napa, which brings in DJs to spin the vinyl on weekends. Whether you’re in the mood for comedy, jazz, or ballet, there’s entertainment to be found in Napa Valley after the wineries close. Sasha Paulsen has been editor for food, wine and the arts at the Napa Valley Register since 1999.
BLUE NOTE
For an intimate live music experience, visit Silo’s Napa, where all seats are within 30 feet of the stage! Silo’s is located in the 19th century Napa Mill building along the Napa River. The RiverBend Performance Plaza, behind Silo’s and the Napa River Inn, hosts outdoor events in a beautifully landscaped environment. Performers range from Grammy award winners and world renowned musicians to local talent. Silo’s has a full bar, Napa Valley wines, its own brews and small plates. www.silosnapa.com | (707) 251-5833. One of Napa’s lesser known gems is the Jarvis Conservatory, an historic stone winery in downtown Napa, now converted by vintners William and Letitia Jarvis to house a small, exquisite theater. On weekends, the Jarvis shows art films, including ballet, opera and foreign award winners. On the first Saturday of each month, Jarvis presents “It’s a Grand Night For Singers,” featuring performers from throughout the Bay Area. www.jarvisconservatory.com | (707) 255-5445 Another suggestion for entertainment in Napa is the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center. Created by two enterprising local thespians in need of a stage, Lucky Penny is in a converted tile showroom in an industrial area of Napa. Here Barry Martin and Taylor Bartolucci stage shows, featuring Bay Area actors. Their 2017-18 season begins in September with “Chicago.” www.luckypennynapa.com | (707) 266-6035 The Napa Valley College Performing Arts Center presents a high-caliber year-round series of concerts and theater. www.napavalleytheatre.org | (707) 256-7201 The Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at Lincoln Theater in Yountville is a comprehensive performing arts center dedicated to the cultural and artistic well-being of the Napa Valley — from presenting world-renowned artists to creating and sustaining arts education in schools and in the community. Under the musical direction of Maestro Michael Guttman, the Symphony Napa Valley begins its 2017-18 season on October 18 featuring guest violinist Vadim Repin in “Repin and the Russian Romantics.” The 1,200-seat, state-of-the-art theater hosts many local festivals, conferences, seminars and trade shows, including an annual holiday tradition, “The Nutcracker,” in partnership with Napa Regional Dance Company over the weekend of December 16-17. www.lincolntheater.com, (707) 944-9900 20

Since 2008, Winery Chef Dominic Orsini has a style of cooking that enhances not just the wine, but also the Napa Valley wine country experience. At Silver Oak, the setting is central to the crafting of a fine wine. Dominic draws inspiration from the seasons and uses special ingredients from the winery’s gardens, vineyards and cellars. He smokes meats with vine cuttings, makes pesto with cover crops and vincotto from leftover grape lees. Most of the produce he uses, olives, herbs, fruits and vegetables, are also grown in Silver Oak’s organic gardens. What he can’t use on the spot, he preserves for later. The starter he uses for breads and pizza dough was created from 20-year old Cabernet vines on the winery property. Without exception, Dominic has pushed the boundaries of what it means to cook locally-grown food according to the season. VERY NAPA VALLEY

Dominic is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and a Level I Sommelier who mastered his culinary skills at fine restaurants in New York and Napa Valley. His journey at Silver Oak is chronicled in his new book, The Silver Oak Cookbook: Life in a Cabernet Kitchen, published by Rizzoli.
Trinchero Napa Valley Chef James Houghton comes to the table with a wealth of culinary experience. For the past eighteen years, he has been the Winery Chef for Trinchero Family Estates where every day he focuses on the harmony between food and wine. With a Culinary Arts Degree from the New England Culinary Institute in Montepelier, Vermont, James worked alongside Chef Gilbet Pepin at The Regatta on Cape Cod, Hiro Sone at the esteemed Restaurant Terra in Saint Helena and Chef Tod Kawachi at the Pan/Asian sensation Brix Restaurant in Yountville for the early part of his career. Today, Trinchero’s culinary events range from food and wine pairings in their new tasting center where you can sample small bites showcasing the synergy between good food and good wines. Here you will learn the balancing act between sweet, sour, salty, bitter and savory foods, and how they can affect the

Pine Ridge Vineyards Winery Chef, Susan Lassalette along with her kitchen team, and wine staff offer a variety of culinary events inside several unique settings for entertaining guests. Together, they create memorable experiences whether it the Estate Gardens, vineyards, Cabernet caves or Cellar 47. Chef Susan’s immigrant great-grandparents introduced her at an early age to the culinary culture of their native France. She remembers leisurely Sunday lunches of roast lamb and red wine. Even as a youngster, she got a splash of wine in her water. Her first jobs were in fashion, and when she left that world, she had no intentions of cooking until much later when she took a road trip with her girlfriend. That road trip lead to a zany food truck idea. Juanita’s Magic Burrito Bus became the inspiration for a new career in food. Susan’s culinary education followed, first at the famed Coyote Café in Santa Fe, then at Joyce Goldstein’s groundbreaking Mediterranean restaurant, Square One, in San Francisco. Other California stints included opening chef at Gordon’s Wine Bar & Café in Yountville; chef de cuisine at Insalata’s in San Anselmo (named one of the San Francisco Chronicle’s Top 100 Restaurants during the four years she worked there), chef for the Gaige House Inn in Glen Ellen and for Cindy Pawlcyn Napa Valley Catering. She joined Pine Ridge Vineyards as winery chef in 2014. As a winery chef, Susan uses Pine Ridge Vineyards wines as the starting point of each menu, and every dish needs to enhance them—a challenge that requires close collaboration with the winemaking team and a constant focus on flavor harmonies.

Signature Dining Package A reception kicks off the night with a view of the stunning Stags Leap Palisades. Hors d’oeuvres paired with select wines are provided before embarking on a tour of the vineyards and wine cellar. The evening includes a gourmet meal by Chef Susan with each course perfectly paired with Pine Ridge Vineyard wines. Guests can dine in their estate vineyards or in the Cabernet caves, built 130 feet underground and 300 feet into the hillside. Wine barrels and exquisite glass sculptures by artist Dale Chihuly make a dramatic statement in the subterranean dining room, the ultimate atmosphere for a perfect evening.
Andretti Winery Chef Adam Clark’s work at Andretti Winery has been to develop a sophisticated intimate dinner experience that pairs well with their wines and ambience. His expertise in
INTIMATE DINNERS AT ANDRETTI WINERY
Italian cuisine makes him an ideal choice for Andretti because of their special Italian varietals (Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, Dolcetto, Barbera, Super Tuscan, Vino Fortissimo, Moscato), Tuscan ambience and architecture. Seattle born and raised, Adam developed his cooking chops as a kid through brute force. He needed to eat! He was raised by a single mom who didn’t have time to cook. After studying at the California Culinary Academy, Adam worked his way up and became a chef at the French Laundry in Yountville, Aqua Restaurant, Calistoga Ranch, Oenotri, Barndiva, El Dorado Kitchen and Il Posto Trattoria. At Andretti Winery, enjoy wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres in the Barrel Room, followed by a three-course dinner in the Tuscan House, Villa or on the Villa Terrace. CHEF JOE SCHNEIDER
EXECUTIVE CHEF GERARDO SAINATO
V. Sattui Winery Given V. Sattui’s vast variety of offerings, they have three chefs-in-residence. Chef Stefano Masanti for special events/weddings, Joe Schneider for food and wine pairing experiences and Gerardo Sainato for fresh daily culinary market delicacies for the general public. Resident Chef Stefano Masanti has been awarded a Michelin star for the past eight years, including 2016. He is also the founder and visionary of one of northern Italy’s most beloved restaurants, Il Cantinone. Stefano and his accomplished wife, Raffaella, a professional sommelier, greets guests in the restaurant located in the small ski-village of Madesimo, in the Italian Alps. They spend their off-season at V. Sattui extending their warm hospitality and creating culinary magic for group events and weddings at the winery. Chef Stefano also oversees the in-house Salumeria and housemade gelatos. Masanti has forged an adventurous career that has spanned both Europe and the U.S. Born in Milan in 1970, Stefano Masanti grew up in the Lombardian resort town of Madesimo, where he recalls his first day in the kitchen, at just five years old, helping his grandfather churn vanilla gelato for the family business, Hotel Andossi. He received his B.A. degree in hospitality at the Hotel Institute Crotto Caurga Chiavenna, followed by three years at the University of Milan. Don’t Miss Stefano’s Harvest Ball! Chef Masanti, assisted by his chef de cuisine from his acclaimed restaurant in the Italian Alps, Il Cantinone, will prepare a five-course dinner that is the ultimate Italian gastronomical experience. Expect dishes from the regions of Italy renowned for their outstanding food, including Toscano, Lombardia, Piedmonte and Veneto. This gourmet feast will be preceded by various appetizers and accompanied by rare and older vintages, the highest-rated Cabernets, blends, reserve wines, Jeroboams and 30
Nebuchadnezzars. Their finest dessert wines will accompany Chef Masanti’s special ending for this extraordinary dinner. Joe Schneider was born in Santa Barbara, and was immediately influenced by the bounty of local produce and foods available in California. As the oldest boy of seven children, meal planning was a necessity and often consisted of creative menus built solely on fridge leftovers. Joe landed his first kitchen management position at age 16. Two years later, Joe moved to San Francisco to attend The California Culinary Academy which offered him an externship at Domaine Chandon. Following graduation, he moved to the Napa Valley to further submerse himself in the world of wine and food while working at Silverado Country Club. After four years, Joe returned to Santa Barbara. He found a culinary home at a French Italian Bistro, called Brigettas, where he was challenged to develop unique nightly menus. His personal culinary studies continued and he found himself gravitating toward Caribbean spices and introduced them to the bistro menu. The yearning to learn more about Caribbean cuisine drew Joe to Key West, Florida to work at Louie’s Backyard where he delved even deeper into fresh Caribbean flavors. Eventually, he opened a Caribbean Restaurant and Rum Bar in Boulder, Colorado. His restaurant, Rhumba, boasted the largest patio at the Pearl Street Mall and offered rum and food pairings along with wine and food pairings. “Special” nightly menus featured culturally-influenced foods from Brazil and Puerto Rico. After 10 successful years, his culinary calling soon found him returning to the food and wine mecca of the Napa Valley and the lure of V. Sattui Winery. Joe now oversees the winery’s wine and food programs, develops pairings and elevated experiences.

Gerardo Sainato was born in Sapri, Italy, a small town on the southernmost tip of Campania, where he grew up with the fruits of the “farm-to-table” Mediterranean tradition. Building Again after Phylloxera and Prohibition Georges de Latour At the close of the 19th century, French immigrant Georges de Latour visited the Napa Valley and was struck by the similarities to the Medoc, where his family owned vineyards. Determined to open a winery, de Latour and his wife Fernande bought four acres of vines in Rutherford, which they aptly named Beaulieu, or “beautiful place.” Almost immediately, de Latour had a profound impact on the California wine industry, importing French vines crafted onto phylloxera-resistant rootstock and helping to revitalize the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma counties. Georges de Latour’s entrepreneurial spirit kept Beaulieu alive and thriving during Prohibition by selling altar wine to churches. History was made when he brought enologist André Tchelistcheff from France to create the world-class Cabernet Sauvignons for which Beaulieu and the Napa Valley have become famous.
Brother Timothy A longtime cellar master and pioneering winemaker for Christian Brothers Winery, Brother Timothy was instrumental in reviving the wine industry in Napa Valley after Prohibition and in advocating technological advances that brought California winemaking into the modern era. Brother Timothy was a science teacher for the Christian Brothers order when he was asked at age 25 to join the winery’s Mont La Salle operation on Mount Veeder in Napa Valley. (The facility is now home to The Hess Collection.) A member of the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Brother Timothy was known for his kindness, wit and uncanny ability to assess wine, all of which made him one of the most beloved architects of 20th-century winemaking in California. One of his many legacies lives on in his worldrenowned corkscrew collection at the CIA at Greystone, consisting of over 1,100 corkscrews collected over his 50year career. When asked to explain his religious vocation and its connection to his life’s work, Brother Timothy often referred to Benjamin Franklin’s quote: “Wine is a constant reminder that God loves us and loves to see us happy.”
Gustave Niebaum Niebaum had already amassed a fortune as a sea captain and fur trader when he and his wife were drawn to the beauty of the Napa Valley and its potential as a great wineproducing region. After purchasing the Inglenook property in 1879, he built an imposing stone winery château and produced the first estate-bottled, Bordeaux-style wine in California. Using 50
demanding methods of temperature control and stringent sanitation techniques, he was one of the first winegrowers to establish the reputation of the Napa Valley as producing fine wines equal to the great wine regions of France. His motto of “Quality, not quantity” inspired new standards of excellence in California winemaking, for his generation and generations to come.
Cesar Chavez Latino farm workers are an integral part of the viticultural teams that produce the great wines of California, and for decades, Cesar Chavez was their acknowledged leader. Chavez and the United Farm Workers union forced grape-growing companies across the state to recognize the importance of the farm workers’ contribution to the world of wine. Chavez was a farmworker himself until 1952, but he grew to become instrumental in the creation and passing of the California Agricultural Labor Relations act, which extended collective bargaining rights to farm workers. It was Chavez’s vision that first gave a voice to this underserved population. Today, they are recognized as highly skilled members of the grape-growing community, and many Latinos have started their own wineries, managed vineyards and taken important roles throughout the wine industry. While he is as controversial as many of the winemakers of California, there is no doubt that the grapes and wines of our state have reaped the benefits of his activities.
The Golden Age of Wine Flourishes Joe Heitz Joe Heitz was a gifted winemaker, and his unwavering commitment to quality contributed to the renaissance of California winemaking. Formally trained at UC Davis, he received a Master’s Degree in Enology and began working in the Napa Valley in 1951 with André Tchelistcheff at Beaulieu. He was a firm believer in education, so when he was called upon to set up the first enology department at Fresno State, he accepted. Joe’s entrepreneurial spirit took him back to the Napa Valley in 1961, where he and his wife Alice founded Heitz Wine Cellars and built a successful family business. He produced wines that are celebrated for their exceptional quality and proven record of age ability, highlighted by the legendary Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the first iconic single-vineyard designations. He also set the tone for higher pricing, realizing that customers would pay more for quality, which brought international attention to Napa Valley wines. Joe worked hard in organizations devoted to the progress of the wine industry and was acknowledged for his leadership.

Al Brounstein Established in 1968, Al Brounstein’s Diamond Creek Vineyards was the first wine estate in California to be planted solely with Cabernet Sauvignon. Noticing three distinct soil types on his property, Brounstein became one of the first California wineries to produce different Cabernet Sauvignons from single vineyards (Red Rock Terrace, Gravelly Meadow, and Volcanic Hill) on the same estate, setting the stage for what was to become known as super-premium Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa Valley. His 1978 Lake Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon – a wine produced only in exceptional years – was the first California wine with a suggested retail price of $100 a bottle – an important milestone in the production of premium wine from California. The graceful aging of Brounstein’s wines continues to be one of his main legacies to the fervent fans of Diamond Creek wines.
Carole Meredith, PhD Dr. Carole Meredith spent more than 20 years in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis, pioneering the use of DNA to analyze relationships among grape varieties. She and her collaborators determined the parentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah, thereby dispelling long-held myths about their origins. Her discovery of Zinfandel’s home in Croatia has enabled California producers to look to that country for new clones of this variety. The international program she founded led to a grape genome map that is the basis for identifying genes that control disease resistance and fruit quality. Dr. Meredith is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Chevalière de l’Ordre du Mèrite Agricole. After retiring from UC Davis as Professor Emeritus in 2003, she and her husband founded Lagier Meredith Vineyard, which produces world-class Syrahs.
Wine-Tasting Showcase Debuts in the Wine Hall of Fame The CIA at Copia now offers a tasting experience featuring a rotating selection of wineries from the Napa Valley and beyond. Open daily from noon to 5 p.m., the Tasting Showcase offers visitors a unique opportunity to taste a selection of wines from six different wineries, all in one place. The Wine Tasting Showcase utilizes six custom-built wood bars, designed by local artist Luigi Oldani, that serve as the wineries’ tasting stations. Each winery offers a selection of wines, and guests can choose which wineries they want to visit and which wines they’d like to taste, giving them the freedom to create their own tasting experience – whether it’s comparing varietals, appellations or individual wines. Each station is hosted by the wineries’ own educators, so guests can learn about the wines of each individual winery directly from 52
a winery representative. The collection of wineries will change every few months. Guests may pick up a Copia Card for wine tasting from The Store at CIA Copia. The card can be loaded to any chosen value and used at any of the six wine stations to purchase tasting pours, glasses of wine or full bottles of wine to be consumed onsite or to be taken home. Guests may enjoy their wine at the tasting station, in any of CIA at Copia’s indoor lounges, outside in the gardens or in the Jackson Family Wines Amphitheater. Guests are welcome to continue tasting wines until the value on their Copia Card is depleted, or they can reuse the card during their next visit. The Copia Card can also be used to purchase items from The Store or a cooking class in the Napa Valley Vintners Theater.

Wineries of Distinction Howell Mountain and Spring Mountain Wineries …Above the Valley Floor and Off the Beaten Path High above the Napa Valley floor, removed from the bustling wine roads below, are two distinctly separate wine growing regions of character and merit: Howell Mountain AVA and Spring Mountain AVA. Exploring wineries in these and neighboring areas will reward you with a unique, out of the ordinary wine adventure. Note: Most of these wineries are by appointment only, offering small, intimate, personal visits. These destinations within the Napa Valley wine community are minutes removed but a world apart from the Napa Valley “below.” Please call in advance to arrange your tasting visit. — BY DONALD SONDERLING —

HOWELL MTN Howell Mountain AVA is located on the NE side of Napa Valley within the Vaca range; its grape growing and winemaking history goes back to the 1880s, when acreage was planted by early pioneers Adolph Brun and John V Chaix who established a successful wine business. In 1889, Brun and Chaix were awarded a bronze medal at the Paris World Competition, and almost 100 years later (1983), the Howell Mountain AVA was established as the first designated Napa subappellation. This AVA begins at 1400 feet, and is home to about 47 wineries, which year after year produce highly rated and sought after wines.
FUN FACT: There is no actual “Howell Mountain” as designated by the U.S. Geographical Survey. There is only the Howell Mountain AVA. The area came to be known as Howell Mountain, after Isaac Howell settled his family in the area in 1846. COURTESY OF BRAVANTE VINEYARDS

Bravante Vineyards
QUICK FACTS
The first thing you notice exiting your car, walking towards Bravante’s winery, is a sign that says “Welcome-Bravante Vineyards,” and indeed, you will be warmly welcomed by Dave Mosher, or one of the staff. This is a precursor to your visit here…warm and intimate, you immediately feel you are part of the family. Don’t miss this hidden gem, nestled among the trees of the Howell Mountain AVA. THE EX PERIENCE: Entering the cozy, attractive (and cool on a warm day!) tasting room, having a seat at the bar, or around the table, Dave will begin by pouring a glass of refreshingly crisp Sauvignon Blanc; this is one of the few Howell Mountain wineries making an Estate Sauvignon Blanc. As you continue, sampling Bravante’s Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc or Estate Reserve, Dave will delight in telling the history of the family and vineyards, showing you aerial photographs of the property, and an assortment of his other photographs. Dave is one of those rare individuals you connect with immediately, and he makes every tasting a special and personal occasion. Included in the tasting is a tour of the cave, followed by (time and season permitting) meeting and chatting with Duane Dappen, Bravante’s winemaker. Duane emphasizes that his winemaking approach is to create elegant, expressive wines that upon release, are ready to enjoy, but that are also age worthy; wines are released only after spending the proper amount of time in barrel and bottle. This philosophy is corroborated by the offerings on the current tasting menu: The youngest red is a 2012, accompanied by three 2010 vintage wines. It is a taste worthy experience to sip wines from vintages going back as much as seven years. Bravante wants you to become part of the family, with a simple and sincere mission statement: “We want to become your winery.”
• Bravante Vineyards is one of only two wineries making a Howell Mountain Sauvignon Blanc. • All wines are from estate grown grapes. • Tours are small, limited to three per day, and tailored to your taste and interests. • Duane Dappen began his winemaking career at Grigich Hills. Before joining Bravante in 2000, his career path included Storybrook Mountain Vineyard (Cellar Master), Rombauer and Frank Family Vineyards (Cellar Master and Assistant winemaker), eventually becoming head winemaker for Frank Family Vineyards. Duane also produces his own small lot label: D-Cubed. • Dave Mosher is a UC Davis Graduate (studying climatology, geography and photography) then attended the Brooks Institute of Photography. He has an extensive food, beverage and hospitality background, joining the Bravante team in 2010. An active UC Davis alumni, Dave enjoys photographing high school sporting events for local newspapers, and is a wealth of knowledge. www.bravantevineyards.com

Bremer Family Winery “Family” is more than just part of the name of this delightfully relaxing vineyard and winery. Upon arrival, you will be made to feel that you are one of the family. Once you step onto the grounds you will know you are at a very special property, surrounded by shade trees, a (sometimes) babbling brook (during the winter and spring), and an ambience that will enchant you. During one of the Bremer’s many trips to the area, Laura Bremer once remarked to her husband, “I want to do whatever it takes to never leave this valley.” In 2002, the Bremers purchased this historic property (built in 1891 by John and Jacob Sutter), and since the initial release, visitors have been captivated by the wines, the land, the surroundings, the people and the feeling that they, too, never want to leave this valley, or this winery.
THE EX PERIENCE: After being greeted by Tom Trzesniewski, we were seated under a canopy of trees, where wine glasses and a tasting menu were artfully laid out. Beginning with the 2013 Bremer Family Chardonnay, Tom explained the history of the property, the dream and vision of the Bremers and their basic philosophy: To first of all, create a warm, welcoming atmosphere, to host friends (because all who come to Bremer become friends), and to share a mutual passion for wine, food and company. As we sipped, Tom emphasized that sustainable farming practices are used throughout, with wines being released when they are ready to drink, spending a minimum of three years in barrel and two years in the bottle. Following the Chardonnay, we took a brief break, to tour the cellar and caves, which included a display of
fascinating old winemaking equipment dating from the late 1800s and early 1900s: A bottle labeler, de-stemmer, bottler and wine press. Returning from the “behind the scenes tour” our tasting continued, as we were joined by winemaker Bob Bolan. Sampling through a selection of wines from the 2009, 2010 and 2011 vintages, concluding with the soft and elegant 2011 Bremer Family Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, Bremer Family Winery’s flagship wine. As we chatted, Bob explained his winemaking philosophy: “To strive for a perfect balance of acidity, tannins and alcohol (all of which affect mouthfeel and indirectly impact flavor expression) and to make wines that reflect the place, pair well with food, and ultimately give pleasure to the wine lover.” Tasting through the Bremer line-up, you experience the intricate tapestry that Bob has woven with his winemaking art.
QUICK FACTS • 1891 – Historic winery and cellar built • 1922 – Farmhouse built, still used. • 2016 – Bremer released a 125th anniversary bottle, their 2010-Eighteen Ninety-One, a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Cabernet Franc. • Bremer Chardonnay spends two years in barrel, and one in bottle before release. 58

Cade Estate Winery Imagine yourself in a state of total relaxation, on top of the world, gazing into the distance at the pastoral valley below, sipping a flawless glass of Sauvignon Blanc, and thinking “This must be Shangri-La.” Imagine no longer. Stepping into the tree canopied courtyard at CADE Estate Winery, an impressive award winning designed winery, being handed a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, relaxing in one of the comfortable chairs overlooking the infinity pool whose waters seem to gently flow into the valley below, makes the dream a reality. Welcome to CADE Estate Winery. THE EX PERIENCE: You will be greeted by your host, as the group assembles for the tour and tasting. Small groups (up to 8 people), are intimate and unhurried. On the day we visited, we were greeted by our hospitality host, Jay Brewner, who couldn’t have been more adept at conducting a tour that seemed customized to each and every individual. Strolling from the tasting room, up toward the winery, Jay explained the history of the search for the property, the commitment to being organic and sustainable plus CADE Estate’s responsibility “to be as green as green can be.” Jay pointed out small details, such as why the bark on the manzanita trees was scraped away off the tree trunks, which added that little “extra” as we approached the winery and caves. Following a tour of the cave, and a visit with winemaker extraordinaire, Danielle Dryot, we proceeded down to the elegant, comfortable tasting room, for the piece d ’resistance: A tasting of CADE Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, having already enjoyed the Sauvignon Blanc during our walking tour. In unhurried fashion, we were able to compare, side by side, each of CADE’s Cabernet Sauvignons: The Napa Valley, Estate Howell Mountain and Reserve Howell Mountain. The flavors and intricacies of these wines were enhanced by perfectly paired small bites Jay’s explanation and knowledge of wine, terroir, production, and CADE Estate history made this a 100-point visit. FALL/WINTER 2017

ALAN, DELIA AND JANET VIADER | PHOTOS COURTESY OF VIADER VINEYARDS & WINERY
Viader Vineyards & Winery Located in the Napa Valley AVA, Viader is a few minutes’ drive up, heading east from St Helena at 1120 Deer Park Road. Arriving at the winery, entering the congenial tasting room, gaze out at the bucolic vista and sit on the deck exhaling as you marvel in the magical landscape before your eyes. You have just left behind the stress of the outside world, even if for just a little while. Although you will be tempted to sit, sip, relax and just enjoy the view, a winery and cave tour with Alan Viader is a singular experience, and one you want to be certain to avail yourself to while visiting this premier, off-the-beaten path winery. Alan’s mother, Delia Viader, purchased undeveloped land with a loan from her father and subsequently planted the family’s vineyard in 1986. Her passion, vision and dedication has fashioned a winery producing world class, highly sought after Bordeaux style wines. Today, Delia partners with her son, Alan, in making Viader’s exquisite wines. THE EX PERIENCE: A visit to Viader is simply put, remarkable. From the moment you meet any of the staff, you feel a part of a small, intimate group. Alan Viader grew up in the vineyards, which becomes quite apparent as he takes you on a journey through the property, the caves and winery. Alan, soft spoken with a mellow personality, will tell the story of how his mother came to purchase the property, developing a “first growth” vineyard that produces wines of the highest caliber and reputation. As you enter the impressive caves, Alan describes the terroir, the rocky slopes, the weather and all that goes into growing high quality grapes, while weaving in his own history. One thing becomes abundantly clear, Alan, 60
growing up and working in the vineyards from the time he was a small boy, is himself a product of the land. The intrinsic relationship with the vineyard is reflected in Alan’s quiet passion to help the grapes ultimately express the vision of his mother (who is still very active in the business), through their wines. Alan will tell you his goal is “to let the wine tell the story of the vintage.” Using science and technology as tools to help coax along the growing and winemaking process, Alan will share with you that the three most important factors in growing great grapes are site, soil and sun. Returning to the tasting room, sitting on the balcony overlooking the serene landscape that stretches before you, the wines you sample will reflect all the nuances that Alan has spoken about: They are elegant, seductive, tantalizing and sophisticated.

Complementing the wines is an artistically prepared plate containing small bites of cheeses, meats and breadsticks, which enhances the experience. Indeed, this is silky, sensuous and opulent-the ultimate expression of liquid art in a glass. Visiting with Alan is like taking a delightful class in all things family and winemaking, while experiencing their symbiotic relationship. Together with his mother Delia, sister Janet (marketing), wife Mariela (executive chef), Ian Dooley (tasting room manager and sommelier), Connie Caven (brand ambassador), and the rest of the Viader crew, a close knit team has formed that truly welcomes the visitor into the family of fine wines.

Pope Valley Winery Just outside of the Howell Mountain AVA and well worth a drive down “a road less travelled,” is Pope Valley Winery. As their logo proclaims, “Turn Left & Go Back 100 Years,” Pope Valley Winery traces its roots back 120 years, to 1897, when it was founded by Ed Haus, a Swiss immigrant. Those who have a slight sense of adventure to take the scenic journey to Pope Valley Winery will be rewarded by visiting a time encapsulated winery, in an area where you can come, sit, sip, play bocce, tour the old winery, relax, all while imagining, or to some extent experiencing, what life in the valley, the vineyards and the winery was like during the last quarter of the 19th century. A visit to Pope Valley Winery is an adventure in time travel, and a living tribute to the history of the area. THE EX PERIENCE: Arriving at Pope Valley Winery, we first approached the original early 1900s homestead, made a slight left and proceeded to the tasting room and winery. surround the relaxing grounds with picnic tables and a bocce court. You may not be quite certain if you are on a movie set, or have been transported back over a century in time. As Helena (or Jessie) begins the tasting, (possibly with a glass of sparkling Blanc de Blanc, produced in the Old World “methode champenoise” style, the history of Pope Valley Winery will begin to evolve. The tasting room itself dates from the early the 1900s. Sampling through the wines, all from estate-grown grapes, you will learn the fascinating history of Ed Haus, and how he came to America to make his fortune in the gold rush, ending up in Pope Valley, where he started a winery, originally called Burgundy Winery. Taking a break from the tasting, we proceeded to the winery/wine cave, carved out of the mountain by hand in the late 1800s, meeting Bryan Avila, winemaker. Bryan, well versed in the history of the winery, the construction and the significance Pope Valley has played in California’s wine history, regaled us with stories of the “Old West” or “Old California,” including Pope Valley Winery’s rich history as we enjoyed a comprehensive barrel sampling tasting adventure. A trip to Pope Valley Winery will relax you, enthuse you, educate you and take you back to a time far removed from the modern world. It is a window into a storied past.

Charbay Winery & Distillery
SPRING MTN THE SPRING MOUNTAIN DISTRICT, designated an AVA in 1993, is located in the NW part of Napa Valley, just five minutes from Downtown St. Helena. It sits on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, separating the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. With vineyards dotting the terraced mountain sides, the area is home to about 30 wineries. Historically, Spring Mountain traces its wine roots back to 1874, when Charles Lemme first planted what was then known as La Perla Vineyards (on the current Spring Mountain Vineyard site). Following on the heels of Lemme, Jacob and Frederik Berringer planted vineyards, and today the district is dotted with high quality wineries, many still small and family run.
As you walk toward the tasting room at Charbay, past the huge old copper Alambic still, (there are three pieces that make one still) and as John Reagh (family member, assistant winemaker and tasting host), comes out to greet you, your first thought has to be “wow,” this is amazing, and it is! Be prepared to enjoy a most intriguing and interesting Napa Valley experience! THE EX PERIENCE: The first thing John will show you, even before the stills, are the “Buddha’s Hand” lemon trees. If you don’t know what those are, just to find out makes a visit to Charbay worthwhile! As you walk toward the tasting room, John will point out the copper Alambic pot still from Cognac, and then, just to further peak your interest, will tell you how Miles Karakasevic, Charbay’s founder, Master Winemaker and Grand Master Distiller, emigrated to the United States from Yugoslavia in the 1960s as the 12th generation of the Karakasevic family to create artisan wines and spirits! This has been “the family business” since 1751! By this time, as we entered the inviting tasting room, we were thoroughly “wowed,” and hadn’t even taken a sip. Charbay is both a winery, and distillery, with Miles and John overseeing the “wine side,” and his son Marko (13th generation), overseeing the distillery. At the winery, the small 25-gallon Alambic pot still is used to make small-batch varietal brandies for Charbay’s ports, aperitifs and dessert wines (the motto is, “Discover the world beyond wine”). Making varietal brandies increases the standard “red” and “white” wine
QUICK FACTS • The name Charbay comes from the combination of ‘ Char’donnay and ‘ bay’ for Brandy. • Charbay is the first distillery permitted in Napa since Christian Brothers in 1940. • The only legal winery that distills its own brandy in Napa. • Cigar friendly winery, introducing a collection paired cigars that go with the glass of port you’ll want to sip outside as well as offering a selection of luxury humidors and travel cases. • Numerous awards: Charbay Distillers’ Port (2006) 94 pts, Wine Enthusiast Magazine Charbay Still House Port (2006) 93 pts, Wine Enthusiast Magazine Charbay Brandy No. 83. 5 stars, Benchmark Spirit Journal, 2013 Charbay Whiskey (Release III), 95 pts, Wine Enthusiast, 2014 • Rated #1 of 10 “Best Wineries to Sip & Swirl in Napa Valley” – USA TODAY 2016 • 2017 Regional Award of Merit (Napa/SF Region) – “Innovative Wine Tourism Experience”-GreatWineCapital.com PHOTO COURTESY OF CHARBAY WINERY & DISTILLERY

offerings to a whole new level of possibilities. We started our tasting adventure with Charbay’s Green Tea Aperitif. Served over ice, with a twist of lemon peel from, you guessed it, one of the “fingers” of the “Buddha’s Hand,” our reaction was: OMG, this is unbelievable! Be creative, try this drink with lemonade, vodka, pineapple juice or any selection of fresh juices. But, be careful, it can be addictive! Next, John poured a 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (from the Stag’s Leap District), followed by a 2007 Lake Country Syrah. To end our tasting, we were treated to the Charbay Pomegranate Dessert wine – be imaginative in how you serve this: over ice, with orangeade, tonic or sparkling wine. No matter how you try this dessert
wine, it’s another WOW! Finally, we ended our tasting with the Still House Port. “Grandfathered-in,” Charbay is allowed to call this Port. Again, a grand slam home run. Throughout the tasting John was expressive and enthusiastic, explaining the distilling process, family history, the passion, time and effort that goes into training, creating and making all the Charbay libations. John says, “I want people to have a good time, learn and remember the experience.” John’s knowledge and infectious personality guarantees a good time and memorable experience to all who visit. The only way to fully appreciate Charbay is to EXPERIENCE Charbay. Make it a point to do so, it will be an experience to remember!
Spring Mountain Vineyard Arriving at Spring Mountain Vineyard, walking up the gravel path past the greenhouse, surrounded by trees, hills, beautifully planted grounds and vineyards, towards the tasting room, you feel as if you are on the grounds of a small French Chateau. Being greeted with a glass of wine, escorted to a table (or into the tasting room depending on weather), your instincts tell you that you have arrived at an extraordinary place, and indeed you have: An idyllic setting, steeped in history going back to the late 1800s, producing exceptional wines---what could be better? THE EX PERIENCE: Following the path leading us to the tasting room we were met by our wine host, Matt Beverly, who handed us a “welcome” glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Relaxing in a comfortable seating area, overlooking the hillside vineyards, Matt began our visit by giving us an overview of the history of the property that today is Spring Mountain Vineyard. Dating from the late 1800’s, today’s Spring Mountain Vineyard consists of three historical properties: Chevalier, Miravalle and La Perla. Of note, is that FALL/WINTER 2017
La Perla was purchased in 1873 by Charles Lemme, being the first vineyard on Spring Mountain where Cabernet Sauvignon was planted; below that vineyard, was the first property planted by Frederik and Jacob Berringer in 1882. Our fascinating adventure had begun. As the morning heated up, Matt suggested we move inside to continue our tasting. As we tasted through a variety of wines (none younger than the 2008 vintage), Matt enlightened us about the wines, the philosophy, the land and the grapes, while weaving in interesting vignettes about the history of this remarkable property. As we sipped and were able to compare various Cabernets going back to the 2001 vintage, Matt explained when the current owner purchased the property in 1991, wines were cellared for 12 years before release! Spring Mountain is committed to releasing wines when they are ready and aged properly. Since 1992 there has been a commitment to sustainable farming and practices, and the lengths they go to protecting the land and environment is amazing (refer to website for detailed information). is on Cabernet Sauvignon and “big” Bordeaux blends, describing their wines as being “a very Bordeaux style.” Following our Cabernet tasting, we were poured several vintages of Elivette, a smooth, elegant and enticing blend of all five Bordeaux grapes, in most cases, (the focus still being on Cabernet Sauvignon); you can see why this is Spring Mountain’s flagship wine. Our tasting experience at Spring Mountain was a blend of education in local history, terroir, sustainable farming practices, winemaking and most of all an experience that exemplifies the dedication, love and passion that that you feel from the moment you arrive. Visit Spring Mountain Winery to drink in the history that has gone into the creation of these elegant wines.

From the moment you arrive, being greeted in this mountain top tasting room at Pride Mountain Winery, it becomes apparent that “Pride” is more than just a family name and label….it is a mission statement, a goal of what the winery strives to pass onto each and every guest: Pride in service, Pride in their people, Pride in their wines. THE EX PERIENCE: Pride Mountain Winery may just be one of the most interesting wineries you will ever visit. Why? Because, with a single visit, you visit a winery in Napa and a winery in Sonoma! More on that later. Pride Mountain Winery sits atop Spring Mountain. Walking from your car to the tasting room, your eyes traverse the landscape taking in the panorama of trees, mountains, valleys, vineyards and ponds – there is a definite mood that immediately arouses your senses. As our small group gathered in the library, Paul Smith, our Pride guide and wine ambassador, poured us a glass of 2015 Chardonnay, introducing himself. As Paul got to know our group, he gave us a short history of Pride Mountain Winery. Jim Pride was a successful dentist, founder of the Pride Institute, specializing in “teaching management solutions within the dental practice.” But more than that, Jim was a farmer in California’s agriculture rich Sacramento Valley. Purchasing acreage atop Spring Mountain in 1989 intended for his and his wife’s “retirement,” Jim slowly developed highly sought after, award winning wines. Sadly, Jim passed away in 2004, and his son Steve, along with his sister Suzanne took over the operations of the winery. Steve, with a PhD in geophysics, having been a science professor at the University of Paris and UC Berkeley, utilizing his knowledge of science, combined with having grown up in the dirt and vineyards, was ready for the challenge to continue his father’s legacy, to take Pride Winery to a whole new level, which he as certainly done. Following the brief history, Paul invited us to follow him to the winery, where, as we stood in front, Paul welcomed us to Napa. He then took a step to our left, and welcomed us to Sonoma. Pride Mountain Winery sits on the exact dividing line between Napa and Sonoma. Grapes are grown in both appellations, AND….there are twin winery facilities (under the VERY NAPA VALLEY

Trefethen Family Vineyards Trefethen Family Vineyards, originally named Eshcol, was formed in the 1880s following the purchase of several parcels of land by the Goodman brothers. Scottish sea captain, Hamden McIntyre designed and built the winery which was completed in 1886. Active throughout the prohibition era, Eschol ceased production in 1940, remaining inactive and in disrepair until purchased by the Trefethen family in 1968. The Trefethens were committed to raise quality fruit, produce superior wines and restore the historic original gravity-flow winery to its former state. Today, award-winning wines are produced on the estate in the winery’s state-of-the-art facility. The original winery, completely restored, is still in use. Visitors can see some of the original winery equipment which is on display. Drink in the present, while you tour the gloried past of this historic Napa winery.

INTERESTING FACTS • Eshcol is a biblical name meaning “lush cluster of grapes.” • Captain McIntyre designed the wineries for Greystone (now the Culinary Institute of America), Far Niente and Inglenook. • The winery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This is the only 19th-century, wooden, gravity-flow winery surviving in Napa County. • The original 1886 winery is still used. Following the 2014 earthquake, there was a 2-1/2 year restoration project. The first floor is now used for barrel aging and guest reception. The visitor’s center, on the second floor of this historic building, is used for tasting. • In 1979, the 1976 Chardonnay was chosen “Best Chardonnay” in the world at the Gault-Millau World Wine Olympics in Paris. Since then Trefethen has continued to receive high praise, awards and honors from wine magazines and competitions throughout the wine world.
Charles Krug Winery Charles Krug Winery is, in itself, the story and history of the Napa Valley wine industry. The oldest winery in Napa Valley, founded in 1861 by 36-year-old Prussian immigrant Charles Krug, also lays claim to being California’s first public tasting room, opened in 1882. With a long history of producing award-winning wines (beginning with the 1944 Cabernet Sauvignon, 95 points, Wine Spectator Magazine), Charles REDWOOD CELLAR, CIRCA 1891 | COURTESY OF CHARLES KRUG WINERY Krug Winery is a wine industry, Napa Valley and California leader, innovator and icon. In 1943, the winery was purchased by the Mondavi family (Cesare and Rosa). In order to complement and expand their wine industry interests, operation of the winery was turned over to their sons Peter and Robert. In 2016, at the age of 101, Peter Sr. passed away, and today the winery is run by his sons, Peter Jr. and Marc. The fourth generation is now entering the family business to continue the legacy that began in 1861. A visit to the Charles Krug Winery is a must, where history, family and a dedication to land, grapes, wine and people lives on. 72

Stags’ Leap Winery Founded in 1893 by Horace and Minnie Mizner Chase, daughter of a California State Senator and US Ambassador to Central America, Stags’ Leap is steeped in the colorful history of Napa Valley. Boasting a stone winery and the exquisite Manor House, dating from 1890, Stags’ Leap is notable for having excavated the first wine storage caves on the East side of Napa Valley to accommodate the inaugural vintage in 1893. Visitors to the property enjoy a tour of the historic Manor House and gardens while learning the incredible history of the estate. Remarkable historical vignettes include bootleggers and gangsters visiting Stags’ Leap “during the day,” and throughout the Golden Era of Hollywood, it was a favored destination for the Hollywood crowd. A fun fact is that Stags’ Leap is also reputed to have installed the first “in-ground” fresh water swimming pool in Northern California. Sip award-winning wines as you experience the history of “old” Napa.

part of the incredible renaissance that took place in Napa Valley during the late 1800’s. The property, purchased by entrepreneur Alfred L. Tubbs in 1882 was the seventh largest winery in the area by 1896. The Chateau, constructed of stone, instead of wood, which was commonplace during the period, is built into the hillside, offering natural insulation. The structure resembles an English Gothic castle, and you can almost imagine King Arthur holding court here. A visit and tasting in this historic building, walking through the gardens and grounds as you drink in the history of this grand winery is not to be missed. In 2013 Chateau Montelena was placed on the National Register of Historic Places for both the stone winery and Paris winner!
Beringer Vineyards The longest, continuously producing winery in Napa Valley, no history of Napa Valley would be complete or could be recounted without including the history of one of Napa’s most iconic wineries and structures. Brothers Jacob and Frederik Beringer, German immigrants, purchased land in 1875, and in 1876 Beringer Vineyards was born. A visit and tasting at this Napa Valley landmark is a true step back in time and Napa Valley wine culture.

The Rhine House, a magnificent 1884 mansion, was built as the Beringer family residence, and the approach will “WOW” you! A tasting in The Rhine House will transport you to a different time, where you will experience the winery from the viewpoint of the brothers who created this masterpiece. All the more impressive will be the facts you learn as you visit Beringer’s Rhine House: A visit to this Napa Valley historical landmark is one you will cherish.
INTERESTING FACTS • The 17-room mansion was designed to duplicate the Beringer’s ancestral family home in Germany. • The cost to build was about $28,000. Restored in 2009 at a cost of $3,000,000. • There are now 40 stained glass panels throughout the mansion, which cost $6000, (over 20% of the original cost) – nearly a quarter of the total construction cost of the Rhine House when it was built in 1884. • 200 feet away from The Rhine House, is the original 1852 Hudson House. Moved from its original location where The Rhine House now sits, the Hudson House was built by David Hudson, who was instrumental player in the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846, which helped to secure California’s independence from Mexico. Frank Family Vineyard What today is Frank Family Vineyards has a long and colorful history. It all began in 1892, when all of the property around Larkmead Lane (including a railroad!) was purchased by San Francisco elite Lillie Hitchcock Coit (of Coit tower fame). When visiting and tasting at what eventually evolved into Frank Family Vineyards, you will marvel at the several historic structures; including the fascinating vignettes attached to them. As you walk up to the tasting room, you will notice a gazebo and bell, remnants from the train station that Ms. Coit built – for herself! The original Larkmead winery stone building, built in 1884 and refinished in 1906 with sandstone was initially used for wine storage. Today, this historic 125year-old quintessential wine country structure is still used for wine production and storage, and doubles as a spectacular event space. Having the distinction of being the third oldest building in the Napa Valley, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. A 1930s Craftsman home also stands on the property, and currently serves as Frank Family Vineyards’ Tasting Room. Although this home has since been remodeled, Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe stayed

Ackerman Family Vineyards Ackerman Family Vineyards was started in 1994 when Bob and Lauren Ackerman purchased a 16 acre vineyard in the Coombsville AVA while looking for a horse. From the beginning, they had a profound interest in becoming an integral part of the Napa Valley community they loved, which included a vision to help preserve Napa Valley’s storied history. To that end, in August of 2010, Lauren Ackerman purchased the Gifford House, an 1888 Queen Anne Victorian that had fallen into severe disrepair over the past several decades. Determined to restore the grand old “pink lady” to its former glory, no detail was overlooked in the five year restoration project, which included renovation of redwood handrails, plaster moldings and the 17 stained glass windows; this was an undertaking of love and commitment, preserving the historical past for the enjoyment of all who visit. Re-named The Ackerman Heritage House, this grand old lady of a previous time stands ready to open her doors, displaying the elegance of a bye-gone era, with period correct antiques dating from the 1600’s through the 1920’s. Private tours may be booked to explore this elegant Victorian mansion. Behind the 76
