Stop Making Excuses for Antifa Thuggery

By Rich Lowry One of the least safe places to be in Berkeley, California, is in the vicinity of someone holding a “No Hate” sign.

So-called anti-fascist, or antifa, activists bearing shields emblazoned with those words assaulted any of the handful of beleaguered Trump supporters they could get their hands on at a small political rally over the weekend. All in the cause, mind you, of demonstrating their supposed opposition to hatefulness.

Too many people were willing to perfume antifa in the wake of Charlottesville, where it clashed with Nazi thugs who caused, and deserved, a wave of national revulsion. But Berkeley demonstrates once again the true nature of this left-wing movement, which is thuggish in its tactics and totalitarian in its sensibility. Anyone who at this point makes excuses for antifa -- or worse, justifies it -- is participating in its moral rot.

The antifa goons showed up in force at Berkeley at what had been a small “anti-Marxist” rally of Trump supporters at a public park. Antifa wore its usual fascistic garb of black masks and body armor. They overwhelmed the police who had been trying to maintain order and, holding aloft smoke-spewing flares, chanted, “Whose park? Our park!”

They then treated suspected Trump supporters with all the decorousness of torch-wielding medieval villagers who believed they had stumbled upon a witch. A leader of a pro-Trump group had to run from a mob that pepper-sprayed and beat him, until he was taken into police custody for his own protection. The targets weren’t Nazis bearing Nazi regalia, but supporters of the duly-elected president of the United States.

Antifa benefited enormously from the horrific events in Charlottesville.

It became Nazis versus the people standing up to the Nazis, and in that formulation the people standing up to the Nazis always win. There can be no moral equivalence, we were told, between Nazis and their opponents.

But that depends on who the opponents are—there is a vast difference between peaceful counterprotesters and violent thugs, even if they are marching on the same side.

Bully-boy fascists spoiling for a fight and black-clad leftists looking to beat them up exist on the same moral plane. They both thrill to violence and benefit from the attention that comes from it. They both reject civility and the rule of law that make a democratic society possible. They both are profoundly illiberal.

All this was lost in the reaction to Charlottesville. Liberal commentators spread memes comparing antifa to American GIs who stormed the beaches at Normandy. The comparison would be apt if the 1st Infantry Division got together to spend an afternoon beating up fellow Americans rather than giving its last measure of devotion to breaching Hitler’s Atlantic Wall.

There will always be goons who enjoy breaking things and hurting people. The real scandal is that otherwise respectable people are willing to look the other way or explain away the violence, so long as its perpetrators are on their side. They are just as cowardly as the mask-wearing antifa thugs who are brave enough to punch and kick people, but not to show their faces.

Public invited to City Of Palm Desert’s Inaugural Garage Sale

Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Bend points and means testing Dear Rusty: I was having coffee with several of my neighbors the other day, and the long-term financial health of Social Security came up. With all of the media coverage of the program running out of reserves in a few years, the issue of “means testing” for benefits came up as a partial solution to the forecasted shortfall. This sounds to me like something that should be considered, but then somebody mentioned that Social Security is already means tested, and he mentioned taxation and something called “bend points.” Now, I’m really confused!

Can you explain? Signed: Mixed up.

Dear Mixed: Wow, you and your neighbors get into some pretty deep topics over coffee, but let me try to clarify. At its most basic level, a means test is “a determination of whether an individual or family is eligible for government assistance, based upon whether the individual or family possesses the means to do without that help” (Wikipedia definition). With this basic definition, it can’t really be said that Social Security is “means tested” in a formal sense. Individuals and families with levels of wealth and income far above average levels can-and do--qualify and receive Social Security benefits based on their contributions to the program during their working years.

But realistically, the calculation of actual benefits does take into account wealth and earnings, at least indirectly. This is where the “bend points” your friend mentioned come into play. The determination of an eligible recipient’s Social Security monthly benefit (referred to as the “Primary Insurance Amount” or PIA) involves a three step process: 1.The indexing of recorded earnings for a 35-year period. Using the highest recorded earnings, each annual figure is indexed to bring the amount up to current values. This is done using a set of annual percentages developed by the Social Security Administration to reflect present values of those earnings.

2. A monthly average for the 35-year period is then calculated. After indexing, the average monthly earnings amount for the 35-year period is separated into three levels, called “bend points,” this way (dollar values are for 2017): a. The first $885 is multiplied by 90% b. Earnings between $885 and $3,556 are multiplied by 32% c. Earnings above $3,556 are multiplied by 15% The three amounts calculated in the preceding step are added together to determine the PIA. 3. Here’s an example, assuming a 35year monthly earnings average of $5,000: • Bend point 1 = $ 796.50 ($885 X 90%) • Bend point 2 = 854.72 ($3556 - 885 = $2671. $2671 X 32% = $854.72) • Bend point 3 = 216.60 ($5000 - 3556 = $1444. $1444 X 15% = $216.60) The PIA or Primary Insurance Amount comes to $1,867.00 (Monthly amount is always rounded down to the nearest dollar).

I know these computations can be mind-numbing, but the example above illustrates that higher earnings get a lower weighting in determining PIA...not necessarily a “means test,” but a way of ensuring that low wage earners receive a higher return on their Social Security investment.

So although true means testing isn’t currently a factor in deciding a person’s benefit, weighting the bend point percentages higher for the lower dollar portions in the calculation does, in fact, have the effect of being somewhat less favorable to those with a higher average monthly earnings. By the same token, the fact that people with higher adjusted gross incomes can find up to 85% of their Social Security subject to taxation also serves to balance the scales more toward lower income earners.

Caring for Animals During a Hurricane FEMA makes pets part of our families

Cover feature by Alison Elsner One of the most gut-wrenching parts of any impending natural disaster, like Hurricane Harvey or Irma, is finding a way to keep both domestic and zoo animals safe. It’s understandable that accommodating pets can impact our decisions to evacuate before a storm, including if, where and when to make the move. Many people actually decide to stay put to remain with their pets, despite mandatory emergency management warnings to get out in advance.

During Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005, many people died, along with their companion animals, because they refused to go to safer ground during the storm. Around 44% of the 100,000 people who did not evacuate stayed because they didn’t want to leave their pets behind, according to a report by the Fritz Institute. U.S. Coast Guard rescuers actually refused to rescue pets while saving humans, sparking a public outcry and a major change in the law to reflect the importance of our pets as family members.

In 2006, the Senate passed the Pet Evacuation & Transportation Standards (PETS) Act, which authorizes the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to rescue, shelter and care for people with pets and service animals. In other words, rescuing a human from a roof and leaving his pet stranded to die of starvation or drowning is a sad story now in the past. FEMA also has worked with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to promote complete disaster planning

that includes pets and animals.

As viewed on news stories last weekend, thousands of people flocked to storm shelters with their animals. Although shelters must make provisions for pets (some do require vaccination records), hotels are not required to do so, and those who turned away stranded guests with pets were quickly called out on social media, leading to angry responses and pledges to boycott certain hospitality chains.

It’s heartbreaking yet heartwarming to see the images of soaked dogs and waterlogged cats being rescued by the heroic efforts of ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and other animal welfare groups. Many of those animals were separated from their owners when homes flooded from storm surge or literally blew away, and the animals that survived have to be relocated into overcrowded shelters.

Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), located in Broward County, Florida, an organization well versed in the animal rescue drill, planned ahead. During the week prior to Hurricane Irma’s arrival, they coordinated with California animal shelters to make room for the influx of misplaced animals that they knew would be at their doorstep in a few days. They packed up dogs, cats, bunnies and birds, and, with a police escort through hurricane evacuation traffic, transported them to the Ft. Lauderdale airport en route to Hayward Executive Airport in northern California, thanks to Wings of Rescue, funded by from ARF and the non-

profit GreaterGood.org.

Three Bay Area agencies—ARF, the Berkeley Humane Society and the East Bay SPCA­ —welcomed the animals and are now caring for the orphaned animals and putting them up for adoption, while clearing at least some of the shelters back home in Florida. (Ferrets weren’t transported, however, because they are not legal as pets in California like they are in the sunshine state).

Similar efforts were made in advance of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, where ASPCA relocated homeless shelter animals to Corpus Christi, Dallas, San Diego and other areas to free up space for incoming four-legged residents.

Zoos are another story, though, because wild animals are not able to be uprooted and transported the way domesticated animals are. The “simple” act of gathering up the animals can be so stressful that it kills them, so zoo animals are not moved. As many people probably saw on television news reports, flamingoes at Zoo Miami were directed to a safe area behind a concrete building block which

was erected after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Vultures, parrots, pelicans and porcupines were secured in cages or gated areas that would not be vulnerable to the storm, and elephants, rhinos, giraffes and cheetahs were kept in their night houses, which are elevated and built of concrete.

SeaWorld Orlando and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay made similar arrangements and provided workers on-site at all hours to care for and monitor the animals. These facilities ensured they would have back up power generators to refrigerate thousands of pounds of meat and perishable food for the zoo inhabitants.

One of the most encouraging pieces of news to emerge from Hurricane Irma is that Ernest Hemingway’s historic home on Key West, its curators and ten employees and its famous 54 cats with six and seven toes are all safe after the storm passed through Key West. They have plenty of water and food, even though they are without electricity or internet service.

We have a feeling the cats don’t mind.

The Two Donalds

By Bob Franken What I’m about to describe is Fake News—it hasn’t happened, at least so far. However, I think it’s just a matter of time. At some Nazi/KKK rally where some of President Trump’s “good people” are joining the lunatic-fringe types in hateful demonstrations, they are confronted by angry counterprotestors. Someone pulls a gun and starts firing. The violence escalates, and people die.

You say that it has already occurred, in Charlottesville, Virginia? True, that’s where an angry right-wing lunatic took his car and slammed into a crowd of innocents, killing Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others. But this might be even worse, believe it or not.

It’s hard to conceive that a vehicular attack would be met by another in response. It is not hard to speculate that when one armed wacko pulls out a pistol or rifle and starts shooting, those on the other side will pull out theirs, and bullets will be flying everywhere, leaving many casualties.

With so many people packin’ heat these days, and with the anger escalating in this country, it seems almost inevitable. I don’t think we are yet on the brink of another civil war, but we are fast reaching the point. Since the campaign and election of Trump, civilized political debate is becoming impossible.

It is shouted down by the intense antagonisms that are spiraling out of control, their flames fanned by a president whose fragile ego and inner demons override any semblance of reason.

Like so many individuals with mental health issues, Trump has wide mood swings. There he was one night,

outlining a new, albeit vague, Afghanistan policy. But at least he stuck to the teleprompter script. Then, just one night later, he was in Phoenix, addressing a rally of his supporters—and ignoring the prompter—to rant insanely about anything that crossed his mind.

He went on for over an hour, looking like someone badly in need of an exorcism. Then he departed, leaving supporters and their adversaries to snarl at each other. But get this: The next day, and so had the mind of Trump. Apparently he was back on his meds as he spoke to an American Legion gathering. Now he was talking national reconciliation: “It is time to heal the wounds that divide us and to seek a new unity based on the common values that unite us ...” I kid you not, that’s what he said, just like it read on his prompter.

But then later he careened to the dark side again, sending out a Twitter storm that targeted his current usual enemies.

It’s not worth the bother of describing them because the larger question is whether these are symptoms of some severe emotional problems.

The other possibility is that Trump, the consummate deal-maker, is employing one of the oldest tricks in the negotiating game: cognitive dissonance, aka “good cop-bad cop.” If so, Trump is playing both cops. We’d better hope so, because otherwise he’s crumbling before our eyes. The real news will be that he’s dragging our country into the abyss of that American versus American shootout. Recipe of the Week Shedding excess pounds doesn’t have to mean depriving yourself of your favorite foods, including red meat.

A study from the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center shows that healthy, higherprotein diets including lean beef can be beneficial to not only weight loss, but also maintaining muscle mass and heart health.

• 2 cups zucchini, sliced 1/4-inch thick • 3/4 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper • 1 cup finely chopped tomatoes • 1/4 cup chopped green onions

Grilled Southwestern Steak and Colorful Vegetables

In small bowl, combine marinade ingredients. Place beef steak and marinade in food-safe plastic bag; turn steak to coat. Close bag securely and marinate in refrigerator 6 hours, or as long as overnight, turning occasionally.

Remove steak from marinade; discard marinade. Place steak on grill over medium, ash-covered coals. For medium-rare (145 F) doneness, grill covered, turning once, 12-14 minutes (on gas grill over medium heat, 16-19 minutes).

To prepare Colorful Vegetables: In large, nonstick skillet over mediumhigh heat, heat olive oil. Add bell pepper strips; cook and stir 1-2 minutes, or until crisp-tender. Add mushrooms, zucchini, cumin, salt and black pepper; cook and stir 3-4 minutes, or until crisp-tender. Add tomatoes and green onions; cook and stir 1 minute.

Carve steak into thin slices; season with salt, to taste. Serve with Colorful Vegetables.

Total Time: 25-35 Minutes Servings: 6

• 1 beef top round steak, cut 1-inch thick (about 1 1/2 pounds) • Salt, to taste Merinade: • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice • 1/4 cup prepared mild salsa • 1 tablespoon chopped garlic • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper Colorful Vegetables: • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 medium green or red bell pepper, cut into 1/4-inch strips • 8 ounces button mushrooms, sliced 1/4-inch thick
