This city wasn’t built on rock ‘n’ roll but for one night only, Historic Folsom will become a music city as the favorite local party sets to return. It’s Folsom Live and it’s set to rock the city on Saturday, Sept. 23.

This year, 10 different bands are set to perform on four different stages throughout the Historic District. In addition to the on stage action, many of the area’s night spots will be hosting after-hours entertainment as well.

This year, the tunes come to life beginning at 5:15 and continue until the 10 o’clock hour on various stages with a variety top bands performing. Bands scheduled to perform on the Trader Lane Stage will include Joy and Madness, the Stone Foxes and Tommy Castro and the Pain Killers. Headlining the amphitheater stage this year is Petty Theft and Jackson Michelson. The Indy stage will host the local band winners from Andy Hawk’s Powerhouse Competition. Two different winners will be announced in the coming days to perform prior to Arden Park Roots closing down the stage with the final act of the night.

A brand new stage has been added this year. This stage will add Grooveline and Saved by the ‘90s to the fray for a full night of top entertainment.

Featured Folsom Live bands Arden Park Roots In 2016, Arden Park Roots broke the all-time attendance record at Sacramento’s 25-year-old Concerts in the Park series with a crowd of nearly 8,000. The year also saw the band headlining several Northern California festivals and sharing the stage with bands such as Pepper, Weezer, Slightly Stoopid, Ballyhoo, Dirty Heads, Damian Marley, Steel Pulse and The Wailers. Grooveline

Grooveline is an unstoppable funk/R&B entertainment machine. Formed in the late ‘80s at Beale Air Force Base, Grooveline has been entertaining crowds all over Northern California and the Bay area for years. Jackson Michelson

Raised in Corvallis, Ore., Jackson Michelson kicked off his country career on the West Coast, carving out a sound that blended the rootsy twang of the American South with the sunny, feel-good spirit of the Pacific Coast. Songs like “The Good Life,” which has since become a popular track on SiriusXM radio. On the road, Michelson delivered more than 100 shows per year. He has opened for artists such as Lee Brice, Blake Shelton and Frankie Ballard, earning new fans along the way.

Joy & Madness

A nine-piece, soul-and-funk explosion out of Sacramento that could be described as Jamiroqui meets J. Geils, Joy & Madness has been rocking stages all over the West Coast since inception.

By Rachel Zirin | Illustrations are courtesy to the entertainer Join the City of Folsom for the grand opening all-day celebration of the Johnny Cash Art Trail on Saturday, Oct. 14. The day-long event will celebrate the completion of the two-and-a-half-mile trail that honors one of the world’s most famous country musicians and his influence on Folsom.

Phase 2 of the trail includes 1.25 miles of Class I paved trail, an undercrossing that tunnels beneath Prison Road at Natoma Street, and a 190-foot wooden arched bridge that will provide views of the American River Canyon, Lake Natoma and beyond.

“Jan. 13, 2018 will be the 50th anniversary of Johnny Cash’s performances at the prison,” said Robert Goss, director of the Folsom Parks and Recreation Department. “The album that came from those concerts, ‘Folsom Prison Blues,’ is why Folsom is known around the world.

When you make the investment in a $7.5 million public infrastructure, it’s time to celebrate.”

And celebrate is what the City of Folsom plans to do.

Festivities include a ribbon-cutting and grand-opening ceremony, followed by a 4.2- and 6.2-mile timed run; a community bike ride that starts on the trail; and an outdoor festival in Folsom City Lions Park.

That same evening, the new bridge will provide the unique setting for “Out Among the Stars” — an exclusive outdoor dining experience featuring a menu created by Michelin star Chef de Cuisine Duncan Holmes with support from Karen’s Bakery Café.

“Phase 2 goes through some beautiful territory. It hasn’t been see by very many people. The public doesn’t know the treat they are in for.”

The new section of the Johnny Cash Art Trail will connect to the existing trail in Digger and Sharon Williams Rodeo Park, providing cyclists, runners and walkers a convenient route to access Folsom’s Historic District and the extensive American River Parkway trail.

In 2014, the City of Folsom opened the first installment of the Johnny Cash Art Trail and the iconic Johnny Cash Bridge that spans Folsom Lake Crossing Road. The bridge echoes the look of Folsom Prison’s East Gate guard tower, an iconic feature of Folsom history and location of a famous Cash photo taken before his concerts.

Cash made the prison famous with the hit, “Folsom Prison Blues,” which he performed at Folsom State Prison in 1968. A passionate advocate for prisoners’ rights, Cash gave numerous performances at prisons around the country. His two 1968 performances at Folsom State Prison were among his most successful, forever linking the singer to Folsom. Contrary to popular legend, Cash did not serve time in Folsom Prison, nor any other prison.

During his lifetime, Cash used his earnings and influence to support prison reform and believed in the powers of redemption and rehabilitation for the inmates he had met over the years.

The Johnny Cash Art Trail will set the stage for a world-class public art experience to celebrate and honor one of the world’s most famous country musicians and his influence on Folsom.

The project includes eight larger-thanlife public art pieces and a three-acre park honoring the man in black.

Fundraising efforts A Johnny Cash Trail Art Experience fundraising effort is underway, and the Folsom Arts Association is accepting contributions in order to complete the park and art installations.

Opportunities are available to purchase a plate on the Johnny Cash Trail Donor Wall, located near the Johnny Cash Bridge, overlooking the future site of the Johnny Cash Legacy Park. The donor wall has been fabricated out of five corten steel panels of varying heights; a seven-foot-tall center panel is flanked by 3- to 5-foot-tall side panels.

Beginning Sept. 14, a limited edition of 100 framed “JCASH 50” commemorative license plate collectibles will be available for purchase. The framed set includes the commemorative license plate, an iconic photo of Johnny Cash standing in front of Folsom Prison and an etched plate with the lyrics of “Folsom Prison Blues.” The plates were made by inmates at the Folsom State Prison’s license plate manufacturing facility and pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of “Folsom Prison Blues.”

The plates were made available through a partnership with the State of California Prison Industry Authority, Department of Motor Vehicles, the John R. Cash Revocable Trust and the City of Folsom.

All of the Oct. 14 events and the framed license plate sets will benefit the Art Experience, with proceeds earmarked for “Cash’s Pick” – two sevenfoot-tall bronze guitar picks that will anchor each end of the Johnny Cash Trail.

Serving up authentic Greek family recipes

In 1979, 18-year-old John Raptakis from the Island of Crete came to the United States alone. He worked in construction, and after some time, he realized there weren’t many Greek restaurants in the area, so he decided to start his own where customers’ taste buds had something they could latch onto.

Petra Greek’s name came about when John and his son Michael, 29, were picking out stone for the restaurant. Stone in Greek is petra.

John, now 56, opened their first location in Downtown Sacramento in 2010 as a place guests could taste different flavors in a casual setting.

“It wasn’t anything special — just causal dining,” Michael said.

“It was a place everyone could come and have no reason to get dressed up. Counter service, reasonably priced quality food — that’s what it was.”

John and Michael became a hard-working duo over the years and recently opened their second location in the Palladio, right here in Folsom.

When the Palladio was still an up-andcoming shopping center, Michael said they were interested in opening their second

location there, but thought it was too much of a risk.

“There was really nothing around except the movie theater and Blue Nami, so we decided to pass on it,” Michael said. “Slowly as the years went by, we both loved the Folsom area and when more shops opened, we decided it was a good time to open here. We opened this location about 10 months ago.”

From tyropita to gyros, spanakopita to souvlaki, Petra Greek has it all — even hamburgers.

“We have beef and lamb, which is native to the United States, but what a lot of people don’t know, is back in Greece, there is only chicken and pork, so we have that, too,” Michael said. “Hamburgers are very popular for us, not being a burger joint. We did that because at our downtown location, even if you’re not craving Greek food, you can still grab a burger as well.”

Michael said so far, the community response has been great and his favorite part is meeting new people.

“I have built relationships with a lot of people,” Michael said. “I see different people all the time and it’s nice to interact with others outside my comfort zone.”

John said he loves that he gets to share their Greek restaurant and food with others and get them familiar with the cuisine.

“We are one of the first to open a Greek restaurant and I’m very excited about it,” John said. “I’m using homemade recipes from my parents. I have heard a lot of comments from customers that they haven’t had Greek food like this — it’s better than Greece.”

Michael said he has heard the same response from their customers and he said it makes him happy to know that their food is on the same level as the food in Greece.

The Raptakis duo doesn’t have any plans to open another location just yet, but said they do enjoy the Roseville area, and would see a future opening as a chance for everyone to love authentic Greek cuisine. ◆

F

inding the perfect blend of coffee origins has been a favorite for Jorge Gocobachi, owner of Argos CaffĂŠ, since opening his coffee house just a year ago.

Argos gets the best coffee beans from around the world, roasts them in-house, blends them and creates different styles of coffee like no other.

Beans from Guatemala, New Guinea, Rwanda, Brazil and Peru, just to name a few, are the origins Gocobachi roasts.

He said he creates his blends from more than 10 origins.

Gocobachi opened his own coffee house after being in the coffee shop business for more than 25 years. When Go-

cobachi and his business partner were looking for a place to set up shop as Argos Caffé, the location that used to house a Starbucks became available and was the perfect setting and location.

“Our goal is to sell freshly roasted coffee and the best espresso drinks around,” he said. “We use as many organic ingredients as we can as well as making this a place where customers can interact with others and be a social hub.”

Gocobachi said their drinks are very different from what you would find anywhere else. He said everything is made in house — all the way down to their caramel syrup.

Along with coffee, Argos Caffé has uniquely blended teas, as well as hot pastries. Something Gocobachi has been planning for some time is to partner with a business to have salads, wraps and other simple foods catered for his guests.

Gocobachi said this was something he has wanted to do because the location does not have a kitchen.

“My favorite part of this business is the creative side, which to me, is coming out with new coffee blends,” Gocobachi said.

“Controlling the quality of the coffee and the taste — the coffee changes every time we make it. Keeping the best flavor profile is my main goal.”

Gocobachi said although he isn’t behind the counter a lot, he does enjoy interacting with his customers, and some have become his friends.

At Argos, you can get a cup of coffee, or you can buy the whole bag. And, it doesn’t stop there — you can purchase your favorite blend online and have it delivered to you for free as long as you live within five miles from the shop.

Gocobachi said this is something new and another way he can better serve his customers.

“You will get free delivery within 48 hours if you purchase two or more bags,” he said. “I want to develop a better relationship with my customers and this should be a fun way of doing that.”

Celebrate the region’s agricultural roots at the first ever Farm-2-Fork feast in the Foothills with local eateries, hosted by the El Dorado Hills Chamber.

In 2012, Josh Nelson, of the Selland Family Restaurants, approached Visit Sacramento with the idea that the region should shine a light on its amazing food and agriculture, and share it with the rest of the country.

Soon after, former Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson declared the region America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital.

Today, the Sacramento region’s Farm-to-Fork program serves as a year-round platform to highlight the farms, restaurants, organizations and individuals that contribute to the local culinary and agricultural landscapes. The program is housed within Visit Sacramento and works to increase awareness of the region’s unmatched prowess when it comes to fresh food.

El Dorado County also has a long tradition of agriculture, dating back to the Gold Rush era in the 1800s.

El Dorado County’s farms and ranches support a large variety of specialty crops and products including fruits, vegetables, olive oils, cheeses, flowers, honey and Christmas trees. Additionally, the Apple Hill Growers Association has more than 50 ranches including fruit growers, bake shops, wineries and a micro-brewery.

“As with all of our events and programs, our goal with bringing the first Farm-2-Fork dinner to El Dorado Hills is to first and foremost promote and showcase the beautiful community in which we live and work,” said Debbie Manning, president and CEO of the El Dorado Hills Chamber. “We want to bring people to El Dorado Hills in the hopes that they first, visit our community, second, after falling in love with El Dorado Hills, we hope that they decide to move and reside in El Dorado Hills and third, the ultimate win, is when they relocate a business here and create jobs in our community to help strengthen our local economy.”

The feast will be held at La Borgata at Serrano, a luxurious mixed-use center located in the heart of El Dorado Hills.

“The bounty from El Dorado County is enjoyed across restaurant plates in downtown Sacramento to farmers’ markets in other counties. We are excited the El Dorado Hills Chamber is showcasing the rich agriculture grown locally within our region during this Farm-2-Fork dinner and are excited to support the event in hopes of helping the farm-to-fork movement grow in El Dorado County just as it has in Sacramento County,” said Peter Tateishi, president and CEO, Sacramento Metro Chamber, who is partnering with the event.

Mark and Karoline Platt, owners of Sienna Restaurant in La Borgata, will open their 3,400-square-foot kitchen for the chefs to create their culinary masterpieces.

“As the owners of Sienna restaurant, we were thrilled to pair up with El Dorado Hills Chamber on an event showing off the bountiful products and beauty of our region. The idea of opening up our kitchen to area chefs to showcase all of their talents was just a no-brainer for El Dorado Hills,” the Platts said.

When the Chamber asked Mark and his wife to be a part of the evening, he said it would be a great way to show off what El Dorado Hills and El Dorado County has to offer.

“It is such a great way to promote El Dorado County and at the same time be good chamber members,” he said.

“Hopefully this event will be a success and continue on for years and years to come.”

Mark said Lucero will be serving a roasted tenderloin and pairing it with great wine and wonderful side dishes. He also said they plan to utilize the vegetables in the area.

“I think it’s going to be a great part of the El Dorado County area where the people who come will have a great opportunity of what El Dorado County has to offer,” Mark said. “It will be a fabulous dinner with high energy. I think it will be a fun evening.”

Hawkins’ celebrates its 30-year anniversary

Each performer is touched in a different way by the art of dance. Celebrating 30 years in business, Owner Deirdre Hawkins has plans to celebrate.

On Sept. 23, Hawkins’ will showcase not only memorable performances and choreography from the past 30 years, but new performances as well. Guests will get the opportunity to see the students and instructors perform in various pieces. Also special to this performance will be the presence of alumni who have pursued careers in singing and dancing.

Hawkins said she never thought in a million years that her little dance school would become so successful.

“Time has flown by,” she said. “It makes me very happy. I have always loved to teach. When I was a young girl, I taught some neighborhood girls to read and I really enjoyed it. I also loved to dance, so I combined my two loves.”

Hawkins said her favorite thing about her dance school is the impact she and the art of dance have on the dancers.

“I get to see them grow from childhood to adulthood and I hope that I had an important part of their life, like they did mine,” Hawkins said. “I teach Continued on Page 32

them discipline, structure and passing on my love for dance. The things they learn here, they can use throughout their life.”

One thing that Hawkins loves is that she is now teaching the children of her past students and she said it warms her heart.

Hawkins said as far as the future of the studio, she plans to continue to do what she has been doing.

“I plan to continue to positively affect more children in the Folsom area and surrounding communities,” she said. “Please join us on Sept. 23. It’s my way of giving back to the community for the support they have shown me throughout the years.”

From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 24, Hawkins’ is throwing a parking lot and studio festival to continue the celebration of 30 years in business. This day will include master classes, food, entertainment, face painting, parking lot performances and fun activities – for free.

Hawkins said this day is no cost and entirely for those who have supported her and the dance school throughout the years. She said everyone, of all ages, are welcome.

Hawkins’ offers classes in various dance forms such as ballet, jazz, hip hop, tap, choreography and more. Hawkins’ also offers singing lessons.

Each year, the dance school does three large productions, as well as bringing in dance professionals for master classes.

With a variety of experienced instructors, many of whom are alumni of Hawkins’, there are almost endless possibilities finding a class that impacts your life. ◆

What about the last time you just sat around friends and family and had a game night — no cell phones? Well, it doesn’t matter how long it’s been, but right now, at the Sutter Street Arcade and the Game Getaway on Sutter Street, you can get away from the world for a minute, or a whole day.

Ron Petersen opened up the Game Getaway only three years ago for his love of games. After his shop became popular, he moved into a bigger location, right down the block.

“I see a lot of groups of friends and families come in and get a game for a game night,” Petersen said. “It helps people get off their phones with the Facebook and the Twitter.”

Petersen said he loves seeing people coming in and having a good time.

“It is a retail business, but it is also an entertainment business,” he said. “Games have been a form of entertainment for the last 5,000 years and I like showing people that Monopoly is fun, but there are also a lot of other games as well. There are so many different games on the market.”

Some of the games you will find at Petersen’s Game Getaway will range from Life to Monopoly, Dungeons and Dragons to the Bermuda Triangle. Other games include Uno, Trouble and more. With more than 900 games to chose from, the possibilities are almost endless.

In the Game Getaway’s original location is the Sutter Street Arcade that houses about 15 arcade machines.

From Ms. Packman to Pinball, Donkey Kong to motorcycle racing, for just a few quarters, this room could keep anyone busy the entire day.

“Growing up in the ‘80s, this arcade is pure nostalgia,” Peterson said. “We don’t make any money off of these games at all. It is just something we did for the community. I like seeing people coming down to Old Folsom and playing the old-school arcade games and having fun. I get a kick out of it.” ◆

Know your wine labels

When we look at wine from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, United States and the South American countries, the labeling of wine is relatively easy to comprehend. The label indicates: The winery The company that produced the wine.

The varietal Here in the U.S. the wine must contain at least 75 percent of the primary varietal for it to be labeled as a single varietal, a Cabernet Sauvignon may contain percentages of Merlot and/or Petite Verdot as long as the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon is 75 percent or greater the winery can label the wine as Cabernet Sauvignon.

The vintage The year the grapes were picked.

The alcohol strength Whether the grapes are estate grown or sourced from another region/appellation. Sometimes you will have the appellation listed as for an example “California,” this would indicate that the grapes for the wine have been sourced from two or more different appellations.

The back label This may contain the wines tasting notes, general information about the winery, web site but it must contain the government health warning. This warning must also be contained on all imported wine.

All labels in the U.S. have to be approved by the Department of Treasury, Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.

Once we start looking at European wines, the labeling becomes more complex, especially In France.

If the grapes come from a distinct geographical location, it would be labeled accordingly, therefore placing considerable demands on the knowledge of the drinker.

There many more confusing regional labeling, these are just a few examples: Red Burgundy, it’s Pinot Noir White Burgundy or Chablis, it’s Chardonnay Beaujolais, it’s Gamay Sancerre, it’s Sauvignon Blanc Grapes grown outside these distinct geographical locations would normally be labeled by the grape varietal.

Unique gallery a dream come true for casino guru Rich Hoffman

However, when Rich Hoffman isn’t pitching his well-known area casino on camera, he can be found enjoying time behind one, something he has enjoyed since he was just a child.

“It was during summer school when I was in the sixth grade that I took a photography class,” Hoffman recalled, who recently opened his own gallery in Ione. “Every since that day I picked up that camera, I was hooked. That feeling never stopped.”

Born in Whittier, Hoffman moved to Amador when he was in the fifth grade. His father worked for the youth authority and accepted employment at Preston Castle, now a historical landmark that was once a home for wayward teens.

Prior to that summer school class, Hoffman always had an interest in photography. His passion followed that of his father, who dabbled in the art himself.

“My dad was an amateur photographer. He had a darkroom, so the interest was there all my life,” he said.

While Hoffman’s professional background has been in marketing and advertising, it often put his photography skills to use as well. As an advertising salesman, he shot various images for advertisers. It was his years in this field that eventually led him to the highest role at of one of the areas most well-known casinos.

“They were one of my clients at the time, they lost their advertising agency so I got hired to be their inside advertising agent. It was 1977,” he explained. “I started to work my way up the ladder, became a marketing manager and then a VP. One day Margaret Dalton came to me and asked me if I would like to be the CEO. I’ve been there 20 years now and I love it. Dalton was the patriarch of the Jackson Rancheria.”

Continuing his love of photography, Hoffman often dreamed of one day having his own studio.

That dream recently became a reality when he opened the Rich Hoffman in the sleepy town of Ione, just down the hill from the iconic Preston Castle that brought him here originally.

“Anyone who produces any type of art, whether it is music, painting or photography, they want to share their work with others. It’s something any artist dreams of,” he said. “This little gallery is a dream comes true for me. I love it here.”

and then if a holiday creates a three-day weekend. On the weekends, you can find him in his haven, surrounded by a variety of compelling canvas images hanging on the walls in various sizes.

All of the images he takes are black and white and the majority of them are shot with film, using modern versions of cameras with analog controls that were common in yester year. Hoffman then takes those negatives and processes them to be printed digitally. Why the step back in time and added complexity one may ask? The answer is simple; it’s about controlling the image that produces a quality that lets a viewer really learn the story of each image, Hoffman said.

Although he also shoots in digital, film is Hoffman’s true love. The passion shows in each image.

“I shoot about 80 percent film, I develop it here myself and I have never had so much fun. For the portraits and pro stuff and I am under the gun, I will shoot digital but my true love is shooting film,” Hoffman said. “I just love the way film renders the shot. There is just no comparison when you put a film print next to a digital print.”

Almost all of Hoffman’s images are of local folks around town, doing what they do in local places. Each of them tells a unique story and draws in viewers to want to know that story.

One image is of a white-haired gentleman working at the counter of a local hot dog stand in Jackson. The emotion in his eyes draws your interest at the earliest glance.

“That was Carlos. He owned Fat Freddy’s in Jackson and he passed away about six months ago,” Hoffman said. “If you ever wanted to know what was going on in town you stopped and asked Carlos. He was always at the counter ready for a conversation with anyone who wanted to listen. Everyone knew Carlos in town.”

At Hoffman’s weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of the casino, visitors can come by and view his prints or purchase them; they range in price from $60 to $400. They can also make appointments for dramatic black-and-white portraiture of themselves.

“It’s been surprisingly busy,” he said. “I picked this spot off the beaten path so when people came here, I knew they had a serious interest in my work. I’m not in this to make a bunch of money, I love it.”

In the future, Hoffman hopes to add some of his blacksmithing work to the studio, another hobby he has taken up over the years.

Undoubtedly when he does, it too will be something worth a trip to Ione to see. ◆

Sounds like a personal ad rather than a wine description? Well, Barbera is a wine you want to get to know better and probably will want to see more than once.

Amador County offers you the perfect meet and greet for this unpretentious Italian classic at the annual Barbera Festival.

Each year, some 80 wineries from all over California converge in Amador County to pour their interpretations of this grape: From Nevada City to Santa Ynez; from Napa/ Sonoma to Pleasant Valley. They all come to share their appreciation of this previously lesser-known varietal.

One may ask if Barbera is made all over California, why was the Barbera Festival created in Amador County?

“The answer is simple, the grape loves the region as much as we love the varietal,” said creator Brian Miller.

Reminiscent of its Italian roots, the vines thrive in the hotter days and granite soils of the Sierra Foothills, unlike the cooler climes of the coastal regions that tend toward Burgundy and Bordeaux varietals.

Barbera also has a long history in Amador County starting with the first plantings at Monteviña (now Terra d’Oro Winery) in 1971. Soon after, on Darrel Corti’s recommendation, Dick Cooper also planted Barbera vines, whose fruit now appears in some of the best Barbera wines in the region. Now in its seventh year, the festival continues to grow in popularity, but it is spared the over-crowding other successful events seem to suffer.

“We wanted to create a festival we would want to go to: Easy to walk up and get a taste, good food and plenty of elbow room,” said event coordinator, Deirdre Mueller. “We are adamant about limiting attendance so that everyone can have a relaxing, enjoyable experience.”

Set under heritage oaks in a meadow abutting Barbera vines, the setting at Terra d’Oro adds to the relaxed atmosphere. But “relaxed” doesn’t mean dull. In addition to more than 80 Barberas to sample, there are seven caterers providing Barbera-friendly fare (vegetarian and gluten-free options available), a Barbera “sensory” station, white wine and locally crafted beer, live music and over 30 artisans offering a variety of local crafts and wares. ◆

Due to its high acidity and lack of tannins, Barbera is an easy food-lovers choice. Unlike deeper, heavier varietals such as Zinfandel or petite Syrah, Barbera is a polyvalent variety — it produces differing styles of wine depending on what the winemaker wants.

It can be lighter bodied style for drinking as a wine throughout a meal or with delicate dishes such as fish or rice. Equally it can be made heavier bodied to accompany grilled, smoked or cured meats, or richer pasta dishes.

As a standalone sipping wine, the range of winemaking styles also makes for a dramatic difference in the flavors exhibited.

Ranging from brighter versions with flavors of tart cherry, raspberry, and spice, to riper styles with flavors of black cherry, blueberry, blackberry, and vanilla, there is a flavor profile for nearly any palate. Barberas can be sublime with great depth and texture, aging nicely. But luckily for us, Barbera can be enjoyed while comparatively young making it an affordable option that can be poured without cellaring.

A First Breathtaking Stop in Amador

By Michele Smith | Photos by Misha Photography While this winery is not on the popular Shenandoah Road, this is a must to stop at to look at the beautiful acres of vineyards and a taste some classic vintages. Why? Well, sometimes a little off of the beaten path a wine taster will find something a little more unique and Rancho Victoria Vineyards is simply one of those wineries.

This is a great first stop for anyone traveling to the Amador County region before they hit the Shenandoah corridor. For starters, the views are amazing with the acreage of vines. On that point, this is also a great stop for those who want to have a late picnic — the choice is yours. This vineyard is family owned, starting with a cattle ranch and then in 2005, the Sweigart family became owners of the 120 acres. While the ranch is still home to some horses and cattle, the family is committed to preserving the original historical structures and dedicated to making quality wine at the same time.

What can a wine tasting visitor expect? The list is quite exquisite. Rancho Victoria wines recently also became award-winning wines. Their Primotivo won the coveted Double Gold, and the Barbera, Red Blend, and Syrah knocked the socks off at the highly esteemed Amador County Fair. Yes, you get to try these upon visiting. Other varietals to keep an eye out for include Sauvignon Blanc, a delectable Muscat which is not only great for tasting, but over some ice cream, a Rosato, Chardonnay, and much, much more.

In addition to the amazing views of the property, the winery will be hosting many future events. The tasting room just newly opening and expect a grand-opening celebration event in the very near future.

If you are planning on going to the altar, Rancho Victoria Vineyards is the perfect setting for a vineyard wedding. The location can accommodate up to 350 guests and also offers referral options for catering, music, and all of the bells and whistles that come with a wedding. This winery truly makes a wedding a weekend affair for attendees and the guests of honor.

Last but not least, when it comes to private events you can do so as well. There is a beautiful cottage that sleeps up to eight people, where they can enjoy a fire pit and even barbecue. Whether this is an event for family or colleagues or a large gathering, this clearly is a great place to stay. Styx

Known for their melodic harmonies and on-stage chemistry, legendary rock band Styx is sure to make an evening one of the “Best of the Times” at the Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort. The big-hair band that quickly rose to stardom in the late ‘70s and well into the ‘80s will take to the amphitheater of the Amador County-based casino with a special Sunday night performance Sept. 17.

“They always put on a great show,” said Rich Hoffman, CEO of the Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort. “We’re looking forward to having them; it should be another great concert.”

Styx was originally formed in 1972 in Chicago. The band saw its early success with recordings such as “Styx,” “Styx II” and “The Serpent is Rising.” After signing with A&M Records in 1975, the band launched their seventh album, “The Grand Illusion,” and then rose to national fame, carrying that momentum well into the ‘80s.

Compromised of James “JY” Young, Tommy Shaw, Chuck Panozzo, Todd Sucherman, Lawrence Gowan and Ricky Phillips, Styx unique sound created a legacy and their on stage performances were just as spectacular as the unique melding of pop and hard rock.

Their sound combines the power of a hardrock guitar with acoustic guitar, synthesizers and acoustic piano.

In their early years of topping the charts, the band had four consecutive albums that rose to the level of multi-platinum. Among their best known hits were: “Lady,” “Come Sail Away,” “Babe,” “The Best of Times,” “Too Much Time on My Hands” and “Mr. Roboto.” Additional chart toppers included “Show Me the Way,” “Don’t Let It End,” and “Renegade.” The band had 16 top-40 singles, eight of which reached the top 10.

Now Styx is celebrating their very own best of time, reuniting again on tour to share their music with audiences worldwide as well as their 16th album, titled, “The Mission.”

“We just want to keep doing this,” said Tommy Shaw, the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist. “We want to let life take its course and let this music continue to be a soundtrack of it.”

ince first hitting the charts in 1966 with his cover of Hank William’s “I’m so Lonesome (I could Cry),” Billy Joe “B.J.” Thomas has remained one of the most beloved singers in the pop music canon selling more than 70 million records.

The Texas-born native, grew up in a post-war America exploding with the sounds of Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Elvis Presley. Like many teens, the music began in a basement or a garage with friends.

“My brother had some friends of his in high school who were getting a band together and they were looking for a singer,” B.J. Thomas said. “He took me over to their rehearsal and they were learning songs or whatever and he kind of made me!”

“I didn’t want to do it, but I sang ‘Rave On by Buddy Holly’ and ‘Johnny B. Goode’ by Chuck Berry, things like that — songs I didn’t even realize I knew. And I did that and we all clicked together and I became their singer and we had a band and that’s the band I had when I cut ‘I’m So lonesome’ and ‘Mama,’ my first hits and went out nationally and been doing that ever since.”

“Lonesome” sold a million copies and Thomas was signed to Scepter Records where he would have a run of successful hit records including “Eyes of a New York Woman,” “Tomorrow Never Comes” and one of his biggest singles, “Hooked on a Feeling.” Scepter Records was also home to a pair of songwriters who were having a lot of success with a singer named Dionne Warwick and needed a song for a new film.

Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head

you know it was just a beautiful thing and I’ll always remember doing that bicycle scene. I’ve always felt like raindrops had a very deep meaning and I always had a significant impact on me. As you know the rain — not to be too corny or cliché — the rain falls on everyone. Those of us in America you know, who are free, we’re kind of ahead of the game and that song just kind of says that. ‘Hey you know even when rain is falling with you free you shouldn’t have any worries.’”

The song has not only been Thomas biggest hit, the song recently earned a special Grammy Hall of Fame placement. Fortunately for Thomas and America audiences, Scepter Records decide against Dylan and kept the song in-house.

Home Where I Belong After a string of pop singles Thomas put out in the ‘60s and early ‘70s, he moved to into the country music genre and would soon have his fourth gold record and hit the country charts with “(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song” following up on gospel charts with “Home Where I Belong” having the first Christian recording to become a platinum record.

The Living Room Sessions After several years away from pop, Thomas has returned in recent years, with a Brazilian-themed record, “Once I Loved,” a collection of his Scepter singles and most recently the album, “The Living Room Sessions” where Thomas has acoustically reworked several of his biggest hits, as well as, duets with Keb Mo (Most of All), Lyle Lovett (Raindrops) and Sara Niemetz, who joins Thomas on “Hooked on a Feeling.” , Niemetz an upcoming singer who has appeared on Broadway and performs with the musical group, Postmodern Jukebox, first sang with Thomas when she was 4 years old — definitely check it out on YouTube.

Despite the struggles that Thomas has gone through in the past including alcohol and drug issues, loneliness on the road, he has found strength in family, the love of his audience and the special role music plays in his life.

“The power of music to cope with loneliness, sadness, happiness, spiritual thoughts or just frivolous happy moments that you’d like to have — music is such an integral part of all those experiences and that’s what makes it so wonderful you know,” Thomas said. “I think it gives you give you a way to experience something that might be hurting you by bringing them out and looking at them and music lets you see it for what it is.

Audiences know when an artist is real and genuine. They don’t last for five decades otherwise — and audiences still love B.J. Thomas. Thomas will always be known as one of the great blue-eyed soul singers of the 60’s and 70’s who belonged to what Thomas himself calls, “the high watermark of American music.”

“You know we were lucky we get to perform all over the world,” he said.

“It was just such a rich time for American music and I don’t think it’ll ever being matched. I love music and I’m really glad that I had that impact and in so many genres that was a real bonus.” ◆

In the late ‘60s, a new film starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford was being produced called, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” A song for the film was written for Bob Dylan “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” by Hal David and Burt Bacharach. While Thomas had heard of the duo, he had never worked with them, “After I had ‘Hooked on a Feeling’ in ’68, the lady that owned the label, Florence Greenberg asked me if I would move to New York City. If I would, she felt like it would be speed up the time that I would be able to go in the studio with Burt Bacharach and Hal David. I virtually idolized those guys after I got to know them,” Thomas added. “‘Raindrops’ became the project that we did first and

or over four decades, Los Lobos has been putting out some of the most WHen: 8 p.m. Sept. 22 exceptional rock ‘n’ roll and Americana music. Initially began by four WHere: Harris Center, 10 friends in East L.A.’s Chicano neighborhood playing rock, the band College Parkway, Folsom would soon begin a foray into traditional Mexican and Tejano music Tickets: HarrisCenter.net winning their first Grammy.

Having already established themselves in the Los Angeles underground music scene legends, Hollywood soon came knocking. Providing the music and vocals for the Ritchie Valens bio-pic, La Bamba in 1987, Los Lobos would score their first No. 1 hit with the title track. Los Lobos, consisting of David Hidalgo (vocals, guitar, accordion), Louie Perez (vocals, guitar, drums),Cesar Rosas (vocals, guitar),Conrad Lozano (guitarron, bass), Steve Berlin (keyboards),Enrique Gonzales (drums, percussion) has continued to mine the rich musical landscape of American music including soul, traditional Mexican folk, rockabilly, country, blues, jazz, and Zydeco on more than 25 albums, including “How Will the Wolf Survive,” “Kiko,” “La Pistola y el Corazón,” and several film soundtracks including “Rango” and “Desperado.” In addition to their three Grammy wins and eleven nominations, Los Lobos has been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I caught up with band member Steve Berlin by phone recently to discuss their upcoming show and recent album, “Gates of Gold.” Berlin, who plays saxophone and keyboards, first met the band when he was with the infamous rockabilly/punk rock band, The Blasters. A fan of their music, Berlin produced their 1983 EP, “...And a Time to Dance.”

“By the time we were done recording,” Berlin said, “I was a member of the band.”

When you’re putting together an album does everybody do the songwriting and how do you decide the direction of the album’s sound?

Like the last six or seven records … Cesar, David and Louie who write … usually Dave will come in with a demo that he’s made at home that very often is — we’ll just use the demo, the demo sounds so good — many, many Lobos songs have been done using David’s demos and then we’ll build from that. Cesar’s stuff: He’ll come in with an idea or a chord sequence that we’ll then build off or something like that and I will also say that, you know, we virtually never write unless we have to! (Steve laughs.) It never happens until there’s a deadline of some sort and you know and we need to have to happen like right away.

You know we talked about it, it’s not that crazy, but I don’t think it’s going to go down that way, at some point when it’s time to write again ... I have a feeling it’s going to be a little while before we get back into the studio.

After all the success, did you get to work with one of your musical idols and who gave you musical advice?

Well, I would say probably Tom Waits, that was awesome and Bobby Womack — that was pretty amazing.

That was a pretty special day to say the least. We made an album called, ‘The Ride’ — made a record with all our heroes and almost all of them said yes which was pretty great.

Advice? The one that comes to mind is Freddy Fender. He said, “Don’t take any s*** from any of those f****** bastards!” He was the original baddass!

What are your core beliefs as a musician?

That’s a good question. I think it’s important that you find your own voice and, you know, we’ve all been influenced by people over the years but on some level you sort of have to figure out some way of saying something by yourself and something that you own that’s just yours, so that’s one thing.

Never stop listening and I would I would most definitely be on top of current trends if I had time to do it — it’s not that I don’t want to you know stand up and stuff that’s just I don’t just can’t find the time to do it.

How do you know what you’re saying is a valid thing to say versus just being self-indulgent?

I don’t know if you ever really do. I think there’s stuff that I think, you know, popular music that I find repellent. Obviously a lot of people are really into it, so I don’t think it’s, kind of, you know, I mean it’s part of the place that you walk as an artist.

Truly Amazing Approach to Healing

You don’t really, really ever know if what you’re doing is b***s*** or useful. You can — you have to listen to your heart to try to make the music you can. I mean, ultimately I think the audience will fill you in on a lot of the stuff you know if you listen closely to what they’re saying to you.

I mean that’s part of it, I think a lot of it is just having a brain listening and trying to get better. That’s part of it too is just to try to improve on something every day, every time out, from every experience. And I think another part of it would probably be never saying no. That’s a little rule I kind of follow; very, very rarely will I say no to something …More often than not even if it’s like outside of my comfort zone, I will most definitely take a chance and see what’s there.

In your opinion what is the single best album or the greatest song that Los Lobos has recorded?

That’s a tough one. I don’t know if I could say one, there’s been songs along the way that have been effectively songs that we sort of begat another chapter and everything up to that point and then it’s different after that. “Will the Wolf Survive” was one of those and then “Kiko,” it was one of those definitely. I just remembered thinking when they were happening those particularly everything’s going to be different now we crossed a place we hadn’t been with this song. ◆

Labor Day is here. While it is the unofficial end of summer vacation, in Folsom, school started way back on Aug. 10.

Labor Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers to the strength, prosperity and well-being of the country. In Folsom, it’s time to plan your next outing.

September in Folsom still has so much to offer. Yes, Folsom has free concerts at the Palladio all summer long, but if you’ve never been to Folsom Live!, this is the year to go. Sept.

23 has an awesome lineup and four outdoor stages of live music. It’s a street party in historic Folsom! The show offers something for everyone. I’m looking forward to classic rock ‘n’ roll by Petty Theft. If you love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, come see this band. Local Sacramento bands include Joy & Madness (soul and funk), Arden Park Roots (in 2016, they broke the attendance record at Sacramento’s 25-year-old Concerts in the Park series) and Grooveline Sacramento (funk R&B). Before you go to Folsom Live, have another type of fun.

Sept. 16 is the fourth annual Community Service Day in Folsom. You can make a difference, help your neighbors and build a future because you can. It’s a city-wide volunteer effort that includes more than 40 projects. I’m sure you’ll find one that means more to you and will provide the satisfaction of helping. Do you like to garden? Then maybe you’ll want to join the landscape beautification efforts at Folsom schools. How ‘bout food drive collections in a neighborhood?

Carpentry skills? Build cabinets at Powerhouse Ministries, an organization to help women and their children. Get all of the information at folsomcommunityservice.org.

What else to do? What we always do: Ride bikes, hike, run, kayak, boating at Folsom Lake, shop at the Palladio, eat great food at some of the fantastic restaurants and enjoy a movie in one of those awesome reclining seats. OK, I’ll admit that I really don’t care what’s showing. Two hours in, those chairs

with no cell phone? Worth the price of admission.

So any questions why Folsom real estate is so hot? What a great place to live. No wonder Wallethub rates Folsom the No. 1 place to live in California. If you’ve followed this column, you may know that Folsom real estate is thought of as a seller’s market. There always seems to be a shortage of inventory. So what’s happening in 2017 is very interesting.

The average median price is $550,000 while the average list price for a home for sale is almost $618,000. Wow! But the average sales price of a Folsom home in July was only around $512,000. It may indicate that the lower priced homes in Folsom sell much faster and the higher priced homes sit on the market.

Of the 160 Folsom homes on the market, as of the date of publication, the average price was $628,000 and had been on the market for an average of 45 days. But only 63 homes are at that July average sales price of $512,000 or lower.

Sixty-seven are pending (buyer and seller in contract) and the average days on market are much lower at 30 days. Conversely, in the over $628,000 range, 61 homes are for sale, while 27 pending homes are pending. Active homes have been on the market for 68 days and average over $880,000. The pending homes have been on the market for 40 days and had an average price of over $800,000. So what’s this indicate?

The lower priced homes, those under $512,000, move fast while the higher end, those over $628,000, take much longer to sell.

Folsom is a great place to live, but understanding the market segments is vital to being a successful buyer or seller.

I talk with sellers and buyers about these topics and more all the time. With added knowledge of the local real estate market, it may be a wonderful time to sell your home or buy a home. With proper planning and a good Realtor, you can smoothly get to your next stage in life.
