here’s the front of house and the heart of house,” owner of Tap and Vine Addison Brown said.

Brown is not a big fan of the phrase “back of house” because it insinuates someone is left out, which is not the case for the recently open restaurant.

No establishment could operate without what happens behind the scenes or in the kitchen.

“They are what makes the place beat,” he said.

Just as the heart promotes life, there is life pulsing all throughout the recently renovated space. Tables, booths, and a year-round patio are all abuzz during the lunch rush with anxious patrons ready to satisfy that noon hunger and conversation.

“This isn’t a rapid dining experience,” Brown said. “I like to say we are California casual.”

The full-service restaurant covers a little bit of everything the community has been craving, from light-fare tacos and appetizers, casual-dining burgers and upscale dinners out on-the-town.

The focus is on a high-quality product paired with excellent customer service.

Owners Addison, Kaitlyn Brown and family members, were nothing less than thrilled when they discovered the vacant space. The couple originally moved from San Diego with years of experience in the restaurant industry.

“Couldn’t help but think what a nice spot it would be for a restaurant,” he said. “What better spot than right by the clock tower? It is a recognizable monument.”

Brown’s mother lives in Grass Valley, but they felt the night-life in Auburn could use more of a pick-me-up.

“The space presented itself as a creative opportunity,” Brown said.

The restaurant was developed to their specific style in a combination of modern, simplistic and warm industrial. From deciding to go forward with their plan to the doors opening was about a year and half. During that time the Brown family moved from San Diego and welcomed their first child, Amelia Mae Brown, who Addison likes to call the “head of customer relations.” The 7-monthold often accompanies her dad to each table making sure everyone is satisfied.

While customers have already chosen their favorite dishes, Brown’s goal is to keep the menu forward thinking and ever-changing with the seasons.

“My whole goal is to keep my chefs artistic minds moving,” he said. “Seasonally move with whatever the trends are.”

They will ultimately keep the really popular dishes on the menu, but will rotate and 8

develop new recipes with what is local and in season.

Produce is delivered fresh every day and the meat for the burgers is ground in-house.

Many have suggested that it is the best burger they have ever had.

On the menu is the Standard Burger. It was given this name because the ingredients are very simple allowing the flavor profile of the meat to shine. It is a basic cheeseburger with tomato, onion and pickle, but really there is nothing basic about it.

“We don’t want the sauce to override the flavor of the meat,” Brown said. “Having it stand alone and speak for itself is why we call it the Standard, it’s just your good old standard burger.”

Some other customer favorites are the Crispy Brussel Sprouts, Beet Salad and Avocado Tacos, though it is tough to pick a favorite.

In addition to the menu is a full bar where they brew their own beer and are working on bringing in some local wines.

“We are focused on simple quality craft cocktails,” he said. “(There is) a little something for everybody.”

Soon to come is a brunch menu starting Sept. 10 and live entertainment is on Brown’s radar.

Tap and Vine is so much more than what the name suggests. While beer and wine are a piece of the picture, the restaurant has very quickly become the chameleon of the community offering anything from a business lunch to a vibrant night-life experience. It is a place to enjoy the atmosphere, conversation and take a breather from the hustle of everyday life. Tap and Vine’s name is accompanied by three more words on its sign: Eat, drink, and gather.

“It was catchy,” Brown said, “and emulated we are trying to do.”

he health food industry has seen a lot of changes over the past several years. Fads have come and gone and the importance of eating nourishing whole foods has become more and more pronounced in the way consumers shop for everyday groceries.

For about 25 years, Sunrise Natural Foods has been serving the community with quality products and one-on-one individual care long before health food stores were common.

The Auburn location was opened first followed second

by Roseville.

Many have been clinging to the health food industry for guidance in navigating personal health issues as well as personal goals.

“Over the past couple years it (the clientele) has definitely changed. There’s a lot of new faces, new people that are completely new to the natural world of medicine and food,” Auburn Store Manager Teresa Gonzales said. “(We are) definitely seeing a lot of people making changes in their lives, it’s neat.”

People are now more concerned with the details of the food they consume, meaning they want to know where it grows, how, and what else is going into their bodies.

“A lot of people are doing things from scratch now and getting back to the basics,” Gonzales said.

Not only are they making meals from locally and organically sourced ingredients, but many are implementing natural products into every aspect including beauty. This lifestyle has attracted many new faces, introducing then to a world of health and a wealth of knowledge.

Some of the trends that are increasing in popularity are essential oils, coconut oil, turmeric, natural sleep and stress remedies, and whole food products. Finding multiple uses for these products has become the norm. Essentials oils can be used for so much more than just aromatherapy and coconut oil can be used from household cleaning, to cooking and more.

“Essential oils are huge,” Gonzales said. “The most pure and natural products possible is what people are looking for. People are particular about the quality.”

Product consultants provide individual attention to customers who are in need of assistance with finding what product or supplement works best for them.

“Not that we are doctors, but we try to help people with their supplement needs and then take them over to food,” she said. “There’s a lot of one-on-one care here. We like to get to the root if we can. You end up having some pretty good moments with people out there.”

Along with foods and supplements, the Auburn location specializes in household goods, cookbooks, health guides, glass bottles, clothing, beauty products and more.

“I kind of like to say we are a one-stop shop,” Gonzales said. “A little bit of everything.”

When asked what might be new in the next few years for Sunrise, Gonzales said, “I would love to see us have a liquor license.”

The hope is to carry organic wines and beers in the near future.

“Good changes to come we can say,” she said.

Sunrise Natural Foods takes great care in getting to know each customer who enters either the Auburn or Roseville store. Many regulars are called by first name when they visit.

“It’s that small-town family feel that people appreciate,” she said.

Anyone can special order certain health products if they aren’t already stocked on the shelves.

“I do believe everybody is different and we all have different needs. What’s right for one may not be right for another. There’s different ways of eating well, it’s what works for you. That’s why we try to have a little bit of everything,” Gonzales said. “I think the No. 1 thing is balance … that’s the way I look at it.”

FISHING WITH JERRY LAMPKIN

T

here’s nothing like that moment when you’re holding the fishing rod and you get a hit.

“It’s a feeling like the rod was struck by lightning — that adrenalin rush — and the fight is on,” Meadow Vista fishing guide Jerry Lampkin said.

Lampkin has been fishing since childhood. He was born and raised in Fresno then worked for United Airlines in Southern California as a mechanic. He’s lived in the Auburn area since 1999 and became a licensed fishing guide in 2005.

“I’m a ‘six-pack’ captain,” he said. “I can only take six people at one time. Usually I take three to four.”

Lampkin fishes the Sacramento, Feather, Klamath, American and Mokelumne rivers as well as Folsom Lake.

The time of year dictates where you’ll find him.

“Basically I start off in January fishing for steelhead on the American in a drift boat,” he said.

March until the end of May is prime season for striped bass — on the Feather, American or Sacramento rivers. Beginning in July through the end of January, his focus is salmon.

“There are five salmon runs — spring, summer, winter, fall and late fall,” he said.

“Mid-October to November is the peak of the fall run. That’s when the biggest fish come up the Sacramento River.”

This July, he spent three weeks on the Klamath fishing for King salmon.

“My favorite is the Klamath,” he said. “It’s far and away my happy place. It’s a whole different world. It’s like being in Alaska. It’s the closest you can get without being in Alaska.

It’s wild and scenic and cooler than here — it was in the 60s instead of 105 (degrees).”

Salmon are his favorite.

While some fish are easily spooked — “Especially steelhead — if you can see them they can see you” — with salmon, there’s no need to be quiet or stay in the shadows because they are on their way upriver to spawn.

“They are an amazing fish,” Lampkin said.

“They’re born in the river, go out to the ocean for three years and then come back to the river where they were born to spawn, which is just mind boggling to me.

“Once they hit fresh water, they stop eating. They are really striking at the lure out of anger more than anything else. They have one thing on their mind. If something gets in their way, they are going to bite it.”

As a guide, Lampkin generally knows what will be running and where. But he also relies on a network of friends, guides and fellow fishermen, the Internet and publications guides for the hot spots. There are also a couple of fishing publications — Fish Sniffer Magazine and Western Outdoor News — that provide a lot of information on where fish are running.

“I have a lot of friends who are guides,” he said. “I belong to clubs and fish a lot locally. We’re always looking at (sites), talking and networking. I’m happy to tell people what I know because others have helped me. I usually pass along what I know — paying it forward.”

There are days when the fish don’t stop biting. Then, there are days when you go home empty handed.

“That happens all the time,” Lampkin said. “It’s called fishing, not catching. A good example was (in mid July) on the Klamath. Normally this time of year, we catch a lot of fish. But for a couple of days, it was quiet. Then all of a sudden —boom — they came in and we were all catching our limits.”

His biggest river catch was a 40-pound salmon on the Feather River.

“That was a lot of fun,” he said. “We had just lost one just as big before we caught that one,” he said. “That was a few years ago when the salmon runs were a lot better.”

For novices and those new to the area, Lampkin’s advice is to that safety is the No. 1 priority, especially when casting.

“For people who don’t know the river, you can wade out and end up drowning, especially in the American,” he said.

Another thing to keep in mind is the catch-and-release policy.

“I usually release all steelhead,” he said. “They are a semi-endangered species. … If you catch a native fish, you have to release it anyway.”

How do you know if you’ve pulled in a native fish?

“Fish from the hatchery will have a clipped fin on their back,” he said. “If you have a steelhead with the fin clipped, you can keep it. Otherwise, let it go.”

The fish he takes home get filleted for the smoker or the freezer.

“Usually clients take them home,” he said. “I’ll save one or two. My favorite way (to prepare them) is barbecued with garlic, lemon and butter. It is delicious.”

Guiding allows Lampkin the opportunity to spend more days in the wild, trolling the waters for salmon and steelhead. But he also enjoys the interaction with his clients and the thrill they get from landing a salmon or steelhead.

“I enjoy seeing first-timers — especially kids — catch fish,” he said. “They are fighting that fish so hard because the fish is so strong. Their hands are shaking. They can’t believe they got that fish. It is the cat’s whiskers. I love the first-timers — people who have caught a little trout and then they catch a salmon. Their first words are, ‘I can’t believe it.’ That makes it all worthwhile.”

3 DISHES FOR YOUR FRESH CATCH

GLUTEN-FREE FISH AND CHIPS

ish and chips are a traditional British dish that has left us for a hard-core craving for the pub food. The great thing about fish and chips is virtually any fish can be used in the batter. Tilapia, cod, trout, salmon, catfish, you name it.

NOELLE KONRAD In the Kitchen

Serves 6 INGREDIENTS

Coconut oil for frying 2 pounds fish of choice 1 cup gluten-free all purpose flour 1 cup potato starch 2 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon cayenne powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon salt Salt and pepper for taste 12 ounces of gluten-free ginger beer 1 tablespoon olive oil 14

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Coat the fish of choice with sea salt and place in the fridge for 10 minutes.

2. Heat a pot of oil on the stove. Do not fill passed halfway.

3. Sieve the potato starch, gluten-free flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and spices in a large bowl and mix well.

4. In the same bowl add the ginger beer and oil. Mix until batter has no clumps. Should not be too thick or too thin. It should be easy to dip the fillets in.

5. Coat the fish in a thin layer of peppered flour before dipping into batter. This helps the batter stick.

6. Dip fish in the batter and coat well on both sides. Hold fish over the bowl for a few seconds to allow for the excess batter to fall off.

7. Place a drop of batter in the oil to test. It should float on the top and sizzle.

GREEN CHILE FISH NACHOS

es, that’s right, fish nachos not fish tacos.

The great thing about these is that they serve four to six people. One batch is perfect for a small dinner get together like a board game night. Finger foods are the way to go and nachos have no limit to the toppings. Fish is so flaky and tender, which complements the crunch of the corn chips perfectly. Top with cheese and a handful of your favorite traditional toppings and within 15 minutes you have a meal for the masses.

Serves 4-6 INGREDIENTS

1 filet of fish of choice. I used tilapia 1/4 cup green chili salsa I bag of blue organic corn chips 1 bag of white corn chips 2 cups Mexican cheese blend 1 can of low sodium black beans, drained 1 can of organic corn, drained Salt and pepper to taste 1 lime Additional toppings: small red, yellow, and orange bell pepper, radishes, avocado, cucumber, cilantro, cherry heirloom tomatoes and red onion.

Green Chili sauce: 2/3 cup sour cream ¼ cup green chili salsa INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and arrange chips in a cast iron skillet 2. Cover with cheese, black beans, corn, bell peppers, tomatoes and red onion.

3. In a separate pan on the stove add ¼ cup green chili salsa and the filet of fish.

4. Salt and pepper the filet lightly.

5. Cook for 6 minutes on both sides.

6. Shred the fish and place on top of the nachos.

7. Place nacho skillet in the oven for 10 minutes or when cheese is melted.

8. Broil for an additional 5 minutes for a golden bubbly cheese.

9. Take out of the oven and add the final ingredients of avocado, cucumber and cilantro.

10. In a small bowl mix together the sour cream and green chili salsa.

11. Pour over the top.

12. Squeeze the juice of a lime over the top of it all and serve at a fiesta! Enjoy!

burger is a classic American dish boldly paired with anything from a green salad to French fries to fruit, but sometimes the traditional beef patty can get tiresome. Salmon is an excellent source of lean protein and can be really fresh on a late summer evening. Top it off with an avocado salsa for another great source of omega 3s.

Serves 6 INGREDIENTS

1 pound of salmon filets skin removed 1 cup of almond flour ¼ cup chopped cilantro 2 eggs ¼ cup mayonnaise (I use vegan mayonnaise because I like it more) 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Salt and pepper to taste Olive oil to grease the grill For the Avocado Salsa: 1 large ripe avocado 16

1/3 cup red onion, diced ¼ cup cilantro 1 lime 1 tablespoon olive oil Salt and pepper to taste INSTRUCTIONS

1. Chop the salmon filets into small cubes and place in a large mixing bowl.

2. Add the rest of the ingredients to the bowl and gently stir.

3. Let the bowl sit for up to 10 minutes in the fridge and then form patties about the size of your palm.

4. Make sure the grill is greased appropriately and place the patties. You should hear a sizzle.

5. Cook for 4 minutes on each side.

6. Cube the avocado and combine the rest of the salsa ingredients to top the patties when they are done.

7. Serve alongside the side of your choosing and enjoy!

Dive bars have made a come back.

What were once rough-and-tumble places to spend an evening, these dark vintage bars have become cool.

Hipsters fed up with pretentious cocktail palaces are flocking to these neighborhood watering holes. At a dive, patrons are not expected to wear the right kind of clothes and have a sparkling smile to get in. There is no dress code (however, shirt and shoes are always a good idea) and the drinks are strong and low priced. So, pull of a bar stool, enjoy a Manhattan and discover a different side of local culture.

Bar hop along with Foothills Magazine as we plunge into three dives in Nevada County.

After a long, wild run, it was feared that Nevada City’s Club Crazy Horse would be closed forever.

Never mind all the other bars in the world. There was nothing like the Crazy Horse. For many, it was a favorite stop … or destination … like a deliciously tempting trajectory to civil debauchery.

All things right and relevant When word got out that the new Crazy Horse Saloon & Grill would open in 2012, people perked up like a bucking bronc, waiting impatiently, thirsty for everything Crazy Horse. And when it opened in December of that year, the world was right again. Better even.

After new owner Terra Saxton renovated the saloon, the Crazy Horse loped back to the front of most favorite bars – although it isn’t just a bar.

“The Crazy Horse encompasses a number of identities all at once,” said Tyler Blue, music talent buyer, marketing director and doorman. “Including pub, restaurant, live music venue, sports bar and community powwow zone.”

The large iron doors that close like shutters over the main doors up front haven’t changed, but with new blood at the helm, the Crazy Horse is host to a range of patrons. “One of the best things about the Crazy Horse is the diversity of the clientele and the way all types of people mingle together effortlessly,” said Blue. “The most memorable nights see old timers, global travelers and local hipsters all sharing the bond of exhilarating music and dance.”

They have a lot of colorful characters who frequent the bar. “Jesse Larson is our number one regular who has attended practically every concert since we’ve been opened. He is in his 60s and still dances the whole time, only taking breaks to hug friends, make new ones and praise the staff,” said Blue. “Celebrity sightings include the Lopez brothers of the NBA who danced the night away while turning many heads with their 7-foot frames. And comedian Steve Hytner who played Kenny Bania on ‘Seinfeld’ was hanging out having a few drinks one afternoon awhile ago.”

A class of its own “There is a special energy which is very palpable,” said Blue. “It has a way of taking one back in time to the gold rush era while also feeling the hip pulse of the present. The commitment to bringing in high caliber

Rhythm and pulse “We feel like we’re in the heart of it all on Commercial Street,” said Blue. “The street serves as the main pedestrian thoroughfare in downtown Nevada City when it is closed off for the First Friday Art Walk, Summer Nights and Victorian Christmas events. It almost has a New Orleans Bourbon Street sort of vibe which feels very festive on a regular basis. “ The saloon also boasts a diversity of live music offerings.

Patrons can see bands each weekend covering a wide range of styles. It’s the kind of scene typically reserved for big cities, said Blue.

“It’s relaxed gold rush saloon meets Mediterranean lounge,” said Blue. “The latter stems from the bar’s striking lighting fixtures which have all been imported from Turkey.”

Landmark “Since reopening, it has warmed our hearts to see patrons experience a rush of nostalgia during their visits to the Crazy Horse,” said Blue. “Couples reflect on having their first date here several decades earlier or celebrating special events in their lives. Others reminisce about the quirky charm of days gone by and how the place is still in touch with that despite all the changes. It reminds us how important this landmark is for the community.”

Hanging on to tradition

Not swayed by fancy trends or flashy guests, these establishments have hung onto tradition, dependability and low-lighting. Keeping it old-school is why the appeal of dives have drawn new customers and have retained the old.

Since 1848, when the building was constructed, Nevada Club became a local speakeasy in the heart of Grass Valley. It even stayed open during Prohibition. The whole building, however, did not remain under the same management for long. Sometime in the first century of its operation, a quarter of it was lost in a poker game.

Not until as recent as 2012, was that quarter finally reunited.

For those 100-plus years, “the building in its entirety has never been owned by a single owner until Hardy Saffold (the current owner) and a local, Mark Christensen, was able to purchase that lost quarter back five years ago,” said Samantha Saffold who is the daughter of the owners and the manager of Nevada Club.

Past guests have also left their mark, literally. Inside the bar, there are small divots made by minors who played heads-or-tails with coins and gunpowder. After putting gunpowder in the divot and a coin on top, they would place bets on which side the coin would land after being lit.

And, like any good team or company, the bar has its own mascot.

“We are unsure as to where our iconic moose head came from,” Samantha Saffold said, “but he does have a name given to him by our 92-year-old Miss.

Shirley. That name is Clarence.”

And, this is just a sampling of the treasures that await discovery at Nevada Club.

“We have no plans on remodeling,” she said, “we are quite happy with the current character of our bar.”

The character isn’t just in the building. With those that frequent the bar, you may just find a close friend or two.

“We have plenty of regulars, as is common in most dive bars,” Saffold said. “Most of our regulars stop by after getting off work to catch up on any daily gossip or to just shoot the breeze. I have known most of our regulars so long that they are more family than customers at the bar.”

Drinks are priced from $3.50 to $9.

The most popular is made with vodka, Blue Curaçao, Midori, and pineapple and orange juice and is said to go well with a game of pool. It has a slinky name: Sex on a pool table.

“Our bartender Chai started making these some years back and they have always been popular ever since,” Saffold said. “It’s rather fitting as well because we are the only bar locally that has three pool tables available for customers.”

The saloon hosts weekly pool tournaments on Wednesdays and free biscuits and gravy Sunday mornings.

All in all, Nevada Club is rich in its history and its dive-ness.

“We are the local watering hole, on any day of the week you will find locals sharing a cold one while reminiscing and catching up on the town’s events and gossip,” Saffold said. “From our old-fashioned jukebox to our mounted moose head, I would say we are most definitely a dive bar. A place in which you can, as our bar slogan says, ‘Come and have the ride of your life!’”

Bringing the fun back to south county

BY JULIE MILLER ▼ PHOTOS BY JAMIE HAZELTON “We’re trying to bring fun back to South County,” Lori Godfrey said, the owner of Dew Drop Inn, just outside Grass Valley.

The local dive has been pouring drinks since the second World War, opening in 1942. The original bar was built in the 1800s, but it burned down.

Inside, the Dew Drop Inn hasn’t changed much over the years. Its decor is old and rustic with wood paneling lining the walls. And, bottle caps form a type of mosaic art on the ceiling.

“To me, I call the main area as ‘70s basement,” Godfrey said.

The tavern’s customer base is growing as more and more frequent the bar.

“Dive bars are hip right now,” Godfrey said.

The Dew Drop touts the largest dance floor in Nevada County and one of the only places that serves liquor between Bell Road and downtown Grass Valley.

This booze oasis is more of a whiskey and beer bar, Godfrey said. Nothing on tap, but a variety of bottled beer is available.

Regulars at the bar, come in shifts.

First shift are the construction workers, electricians, framers and the like.

Late afternoon, the second shift files in, the South County farmers, Godfrey said, a hipster crowd. The third shift comes in around 9 p.m. and it can get bustling.

As the new owner of the establishment, Godfrey has a old history with the saloon. Her family has been coming to Dew Drop Inn since the 1960s. Her grandmother was bartender in years past and Godfrey was a bartender 15 years ago at the inn, for just a year. It all started up again four and half months ago, Godfrey was working as a paramedic but she said

hated her job. However, the future was bright. After work one day, she went to the Dew Drop for a drink. On this day, the owner was showing the property to prospective buyers. When Godfrey heard the buyers were going to tear down the bar, she went home, told her husband and they bought the place and preserved it.

“We want to keep the charm,” she said.

The roadhouse is locally famous for its lemon drops and bloody Marys.

The lemon drop is made with fresh juice and the bloody Mary recipe is from Godfrey’s grandmother. The drink has horseradish, Tabasco sauce, celery salt, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, vodka and Grandma’s essential: Campbell’s tomato juice. Or for a more south-of-the-border flavor, order a bloody Maria, where tequila is substituted for vodka. This formula at one time was replaced with pre-made mix but thankfully it was reinstituted when Godfrey became owner.

To add to the appeal, Dew Drop Inn has live music on Friday and Saturday nights, open mic nights on Mondays and karaoke during the week.

Throughout football season, trips to Vegas will be given away. Winners will be announced at the end of the game and have to be present.

While food is not served yet, after a few county inspections, Godfrey hopes to offer a menu of barbecue fare.

Dew Drop Inn sits on four acres off Highway 49. On the one acre for guests, there are horse shoes and corn hole games, and a patio to take in the outdoors with a cool margarita.

Up until about the 1980s, you could enjoy that drink next to an Olympicsized pool, but since has been replaced with grass.

“The rumor is Johnny Weismuller, the first Tarzan, came here to swim and train while in California,” Godfrey said.

Although she hasn’t been able to verify that report — yet.

Volunteer firefighter loves her job MORE PEOPLE NEEDED

I

n California there is a shortage of volunteer firefighters, but one woman is doing her part to change that.

Janette Tam, 36, signed up for the academy last year and officially received her badge on May 31 this year.

After racing cars for many years she wanted to find a new place to go.

She volunteers for Station 73 in Lincoln.

“I wanted to help my community and I wanted to find a family to do stuff with,” said Tam. Tam’s husband is also a firefighter.

Tam works for Strictly Toy-anda’s in Auburn five days a week.

She would go to her training on Thursday nights or on the weekends, to accommodate her work schedule.

“It’s cool because it’s an academy that people who work can still do,” said Tam. She works during the day and then will volunteer at the station at night or on the weekends.

“I volunteer when I can,” she said.

She said one of the best parts about being a volunteer is that you can schedule the times you work and you fit it in where you can.

“It is interesting,” said Tam. She also has access to various classes such as Hazmat, confined spaces or other relevant classes.

To fight a fire takes a lot of people and equipment. Tam remembers the 950 acre fire she helped fight near Beale Air Force Base.

“It takes a lot of firefighters to be able to do something,” she said.

During that fire she worked on the water tender, making sure everyone had enough water to put the fire out.

“We do everything the firefighters do,” said Tam. What sets volunteer firefighters apart is that they are doing the same job but they won’t be getting paid for it.

This year, Tam won “Rookie of the Year” out of the entire Batallian 17, something that Tam was super proud of.

“We are always trying to hold the bar higher,” she said.

She also said that when people have to dial 911, it is their worst day so she likes being able to help them when they need it.

“You can make their worst day a little better,” said Tam. Joining the volunteer fire department is worth it, said Tam and the only requirement is living near the district you want to volunteer in.

“It’s crazy because you never go on two calls that are the same,” she said.

W

ith the beauty of the Placer foothills in autumn, it is easy to see why the Auburn Fall Home Show is the largest fall home show in Northern California.

With thoughts of remodeling, redecorating and preparing for the holiday season, this show is a must. Interior design vignettes, faux painting demonstrations, counter top materials, custom cabinetry and home design are integral parts of the show.

Browse through the tiny house villa and see how big living small is. Plus, there will be a tiny house giveaway, valued at $50,000.

More than 1,000 exhibits allow merchants to showcase all the newest products and services to assist homeowners with their needs. Expect a large selection for comparison.

Landscaping is always an important part of the Auburn Shows. Free flower bulbs are given away to the first 500 attendees. Greenhouses, outdoor sheds, sunrooms and more custom garden displays will be featured.

The show is large so plan on spending your day here. Stop by the International Food Court for lunch. Favorites include fajitas, quesadillas, barbecue tri-tip or pulled-pork sandwiches, Caesar salad, funnel cakes. hamburgers and corndogs. Relax and have your favorite beer, wine or cocktail while you rest up for more booth visiting.

Thoughts of the holiday season begin this time of year. Whether its gift or gourmet items or dressing up your home for holiday entertaining, there is something for everyone.

he annual American Graffiti Car Show is soon to roll into Auburn. The event is hosted at Mels Diner and has been rescheduled to Sept. 23. The prior June date was canceled due to high temperatures and a smog alert.

“The date may actually in the long-run work in our favor,” owner of Mels Diner, Tony Metteer said. “This is one of the big events for this side of town, the North side of town. It’s all about raising money for the charities.”

The charities that benefit from the proceeds are Auburn Senior Center, The American Cancer Society, Special Townsmen and Roamin Angels Club Charity funds. Over the past years, the fundraising show has brought in more than $30,000.

The rather large event expects a slightly bigger turn out than last year, totaling anywhere from 150 to 200 cars with around 400-plus people in attendance.

“The parking lot is pretty much full,” Metteer said.

Even Metteer has a car he brings out. His 1930 Ford Coupe was purchased right as he and his wife were opening the diner seven years ago. At first he was searching for a delivery van, but when he came across the Ford, the offer was too perfect to pass up.

“It looks almost exactly like the one in ‘American Graffiti,’” Metteer said.

The rain-or-shine car show will bring in a variety of cars from the late ‘20s and early ‘30s deuce coupes to the tri-power ‘50s and ‘60s Chevys, Metteer said.

“We get a good range. Most of the cars are pre-1976. So they are classics, so to speak,” he said.

There are more than 30 awards given and a raffle with donated worth-while prizes such as a car stereo, barbecue, televisions and more.

The event is sponsored by nearby business: Les Schwab Tires, Auburn Body Shop, A.L. Harvey Law, Auburn Autohaus, Lyon Real Estate, Riebes Auto Parts, Auburn Dodge and Toyota, Cruiser’s Car Wash, Community 1st Bank, Cruisin’ Garage (KAHI) and Mels Diner.

“Those are the local people who make it happen,” Metteer said.

Live entertainment brings another level of fun to the day with many impersonators including Johnny Cash, Dean Martin, Patsy Cline and Marilyn Monroe. Some attendees in the past have taken the opportunity to dress up as other

The diner will be open for sit down, however, drivers can also place orders from cars in a true ‘50s fashion.

“We have four young ladies who dress up as car hops and go around taking the orders,” Metteer said.

Member of the Townsmen, Jimmy Hadley said his favorite part of the show is everybody being in one place and the camaraderie with the other car guys.

“The emphasis is a bunch of people having fun, doing something which for most of us is a passion, but the whole focus is to raise money for the charities,” Metteer said. “That’s what we do it for.”

here was a time when Josh Hanosh was a meat eater. The double-baconcheeseburgers-from-McDonald’s kind of meat eater. The I’ll-never-be-a-vegetarian kind of meat eater.

That was five years ago. Today, Josh is a vegan who would rather save animals than eat them.

It is a message that Josh and his wife, Danielle, want to spread to the community in a fun, family-oriented way. And they’re doing it right from their five-acre home in Colfax.

They call it Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary, and they’re sharing it with 76 different animals, including pigs, chickens, llamas and goats.

They want to share it with you, too.

“We started the sanctuary to appeal to families,” Josh said. “We try to have as many family friendly events as we can.”

And on Saturday, Oct. 7, Blackberry Creek Farm will be hosting one of their most popular events of the year: Llamas and Pajamas.

From 3:30 to 8:30 p.m., families will enjoy a self-guided sanctuary tour, animal meet and greets, and an outdoor big-screen showing of “Charlotte’s Web.” There will also be vegan blackberry gelato from Conscious Creamery made with the farm’s very own wild blackberries.

Additionally, attendees will get a seat at the debut reading of “What are Llamas For?,” the illustrated children’s book written by Danielle Hanosh.

“We wanted to have a fun event while the weather was nice where kids could come with their parents and hang out with animals and watch a movie outside,” Josh said. “Not a lot of people do that and it’s a fun experience.”

It is an experience that sells out quick.

“Last year we had to turn people away,” Josh said. “This year we’re opening it up to 100 people.”

Those 100 people can rest assured that the price of admission goes to the stars of the show: The animals themselves.

“There are no paid staff here,” Josh said, referencing the nonprofit, volunteers-only status of the farm. “My wife and I don’t make any money from the sanctuary.”

Instead, they care for the animals in the morning and evening, and go to Springview Middle School in Rocklin during the day, where Josh teaches math and computer science and Danielle teaches English.

“Neither of us grew up on a farm,” Josh said, who had lived with his wife in Citrus Heights back in his meat-eating days. “We have learned so much and we’re never going back. Once you live in the country, you don’t want to go back.”

Conor Oberst joined his first band at the age of 13 and has been releasing music since 1993. In the fall of 2015, Oberst returned to his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska somewhat unexpectedly due to serious health issues. While Oberst wrote and initially recorded the songs created during this time, he intended to ultimately record them with a full band. In the midst of putting together the band the passionate responses about the first solo recordings encouraged him to release the songs as is, in their sparse, original form, resulting in 2016’s Ruminations.
