fter 32 years, some things stay the same. The meeting place, for instance. Since the late 80s, the Granite Bay Flycasters have met in a long, flat outbuilding with that summer-camp smell, tucked in beneath oaks in the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, a building the original crew put up themselves.

The $30 annual membership fee hasn’t changed in a while, either. Nor has the fact that every year on the Little Truckee fishing trip, the new guy always catches the first fish before anyone else.

The Granite Bay Flycasters, a 240-person collective of local fly-fishing enthusiasts, has been around since 1985 and one of their members, Frank Stolten, is another of the group’s longstanding aspects. An “original member from day one,” Stolten moved here from the Bay Area and has been fishing since age 16, well before this group got its start.

Fly fishing, Stolten says, is one of the more challenging ways to catch a fish, and that’s exactly what he loves about it.

Rather than “regular fishing”, which involves casting a weight and lure attached to a line, fly fishing casts a line attached to an almost weightless lure. The line is heavy enough to direct the fly to its target, though it does take some finessing to get it to where it needs to go.

“You have to figure out the puzzle every time you go out on the water,” Stolten says. “You have to do everything right to be successful.”

Fly fishing is a sport of sprawling nuance, too. There are different techniques, environments, fish species, rods, nets, reels, flies, fly-tying methods, knots and more, and the lists continue within each of those items, breaking down into a combination of preferences and needs

based on a caster’s specific situation.

Stolten refers to the group as a “full-service fishing club.” They offer clinics on just about any aspect involved with the sport. At monthly meetings, there are plugs and sign-up sheets for “fundamentals of knots,” spey casting, net building and fly tying.

IN THE CLUBHOUSE

At the August meeting, for instance, Art Hawkins mentions an upcoming clinic of his craft. He is one of the group’s net-building aficionados, a guy who’s a “master woodworker,” according to a member called Sturmer who leans over and whispers in awe.

Sturmer also shares that this meeting is the smallest crowd he’s seen in awhile.

There are still about 50 people in the room, but apparently meetings are standing room-only when summer’s over.

Typical of most meetings, this one has its agenda and its announcements — though these tend to center around upcoming trips and stream restoration efforts. But Flycaster meetings also feature a speaker. In August, it’s Katie Osborn, a master’s student in the fisheries program at Humboldt State University and a real-life example of how the Flycasters focus on more than just rods and reels.

Osborn is the recipient of the Flycasters’ $1,000 fellowship, given to a fisheries student at Humboldt State University, known for their program. For the Flycasters, education and conservation are just as important as reeling in a big one.

“It’s gotten beyond fishing,” Stolten says. “We’re big into conservation and we donate tons of money.”

CREEK TO CLASSROOM

The group’s one and only annual fund-

raiser, a family-oriented benefit dinner, raises enough money to keep the group running, provide the fellowship and help support conservation groups like California Trout and Friends of the River.

Part of the group’s mission is to bring fisheries education to younger people too, namely third- through fifth-graders at over 80 schools in the area. Since 1989, according to Stolten, the Flycasters have helped get salmon and steelhead ecology curricula into elementary school classrooms, complete with tanks, eggs, pumps and training.

Teachers attend a one-day inservice training at the Nimbus Hatchery to learn about how to care for the 30 to 35 fish eggs they’re given. Once the tanks are set up in the classrooms, students learn about the fishes’ life cycle and release

them back into the river once they’ve grown enough.

Students learn about salmon and steelhead, depending on the time of year, and the challenges that each species face: chemical pollution, thermal pollution and diversions like man-made dams. They learn, too, that these challenges don’t only belong underwater.

“Things that affect salmon affect people,” Stolten says. “They’re a bellwether.”

COMMITTED BUT CASUAL

It can be easy to fall into the doom-andgloom of environmental problems, especially surrounding delicate species like salmon and steelhead. And while Stolten and other members make it clear during the meeting that these issues are vital to CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

continued from page 7 preserving both their sport and the ecosystem, there is still an element of rib-jabbing humor. For instance, part of each meeting is devoted to fishing stories, where members share tall (or at least medium-sized) tales of recent excursions on the water.

One gentleman describes a trip to Alaska where his group caught 60 fish a day but had to portage their boats every 300 feet.

Looking up as he speaks, the crowd is a sea of khaki shorts, button-down field shirts with enormous pockets and, admittedly, white hair. But the energy in the room is anything but stale. Rather, it’s jovial, engaged, passionate — one part Sierra Club and one part Red Green.

In one of the final fishing stories, Sturmer stands to retell a trip Oregon’s Umpqua River for his 88th birthday. He begins with a philosophy that has already circulated the room more than once.

“Now don’t forget,” he says, “we don’t have to tell the truth when we’re telling fishing stories.”

magine walking into the woods, being handed a map and a compass and racing against the clock — and competitors — to hit as many checkpoints as possible, totally GPS-free. It may sound stressful or exhilarating, depending on your perspective, but for a group of roughly 50 people from the Sacramento region, this is exactly what constitutes a fun-filled Saturday.

The Gold Country Orienteering Club got its start in 1995 and is a local chapter of the national federation, Orienteering USA. According to Marsha Jacobs, vice president of the Gold Country group, there is also an international federation for the orienteering, which combines endurance with navigation skills.

The local group holds seven meets per year, in spring and fall since “summers

are too hot and winters are too wet,” said Jacobs. Meets are scattered throughout the region, from Truckee to Walnut Creek, but many are held around Folsom Lake, including one at Granite Bay. A SPORT FOR ALL

According to Orienteering USA, the sport originated as a training exercise for the Swedish army. The first military competition was in May 1893, while the first civilian competition was held four years after in Oslo, Norway. In 1919, Swedish Major Ernst Killander organized the first large-scale orienteering meet, which attracted 220 athletes.

The sport took off in North America after a 1967 meet in Pennsylvania. While it has a niche following compared to sports like football and basketball, orienteering

has inspired several national teams, including groups for youth, skiers, mountain bikers and the deaf.

According to Gold Country orienteer Erin Magers, the sport is incredibly versatile. It attracts elite athletes looking to break records, as well as young families enjoying a walk in the woods. It can be as competitive as participants make it.

“You can do it with other people or you can do it by yourself,” Magers said. “It’s a fun way to be outside in nature.”

Jacobs said the sport attracts people of “all shapes and sizes.” She, like two of her fellow Gold Country Orienteers officers, is in her 70s and still trucking through the woods.

“It’s good for people who think analytically and like to be outside,” Jacobs said.

She added that the challenging part is for

racers to maintain their mental clarity as they become more physically worn on the course.

“It’s amazing how honest the orienteering community is,” Jacobs said.

Each course is color-coded by difficulty. Jacobs explained that courses become more advanced when controls are spaced farther apart, when courses go off-trail and when the map key swaps out English for symbols — swapping out the word “boulder” for a large dot. This is practical for international meets, where not everyone will be speaking the same language, but is more of an homage to the sport’s international history for meets closer to home.

THE ORIENTEERING ROADMAP

A SENSE OF PLACE

For people who have never orienteered before, Jacobs said the first thing they should do at Gold Country meet is attend a 10-minute introductory clinic that teaches newbies to read a compass, read a map and identify poison oak.

When a meet begins, each team has a staggered start time. A triangle on the map marks the course’s start and each checkpoint is a circle. Each checkpoint — called a “control”, Jacobs explained — has a white and orange three-sided box.

Participants must check in at each control in numerical order and make their way back to the start.

Though participants take their phones with them for emergency purposes, orienteering meets forbid GPS and maps on an honor system. Participants are also not supposed to help other teams with navigation, except in medical emergencies.

Jacobs lives in Lincoln and orienteers all over Northern California, but first came to the sport in the Bay Area in 1992 after attending an REI workshop. Back then she wasn’t really outdoorsy, she said, but she’s always been drawn to maps.

When orienteering, participants must combine map-reading skills with racing. Each team of orienteers must punch in at checkpoints, marked with orange and white flags like this one.

“Before orienteering, I’d go on solo road trips and I’d get out the maps for the next day to figure out where I was going,” she said. “I like the general feel of knowing where you are. You can visualize what’s beyond where you can see.”

According to Jacobs, about 90 to 150 people consistently show up for the Granite Bay meet near the end of Douglas Boulevard in the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area. This course was the first one Magers did, and it continues to be her favorite. Magers said the Bay Area has fun courses too, but they tend to be steep and strenuous.

Despite the challenges the unknown may present, the variety of courses is Magers’ favorite part of the sport.

“There’s no course that’s the same,” she said. “You never know what you’re going to get aside from knowing you’ll have fun and you’ll see some beautiful places.”

O

ne of the most well-known statistics for the Boy Scouts of America might also be one of the most disheartening for a scout to hear.

Take a group of 20 newly minted, 10-year-old scouts and statistically, just one of them will likely attain the organization’s highest rank, Eagle Scout. In some troops the number is even lower, with years passing between Eagle ceremonies.

There’s no shame in this, with the national organization’s goal simply that every scout attain First Class, a rank three below Eagle and one that requires a fraction of the work.

Then there’s Troop 121 of Granite Bay. Maybe a third of the boys in Troop 121 will eventually be Eagle Scouts. It’s one of the highest rates of Eagle Scouts in California, if not the country, with 15 to 25 boys becoming Eagles each year in the troop.

The boys in Troop 121 who become Eagles are ones like Parker Getz, who recently completed his required Eagle Scout project and merit badges, just ahead of his 15th birthday on Sept. 24. He plans to go for his final examination, known in scouting world as a board of review, in October.

“He’s very intelligent, he’s very organized and he’s determined to get things done,” Scoutmaster John Hooten said.

Troop 121 has a lot of Eagle Scouts partly by design. Parental involvement is strongly encouraged. The troop also focuses on getting new scouts to First Class in a year, putting new members into a special patrol.

The troop has its First Class program because it’s found that scouts who reach the rank tend to be more successful. Hooten looked at it some years ago and found that 60 to 70 percent of the scouts in Troop 121 who reached First Class would advance to Eagle.

Eagle Scout, with its 5-percent attainment rate, is prestigious and looks good on college applications. Famous Eagle Scouts include Neil Armstrong and Steven Spielberg.

That doesn’t mean, though, that Troop 121 is a one-stop Eagle shop.

“By no means would I consider our troop to be an Eagle mill,” Hooten said.

Still, getting to Eagle is an area of focus for many scouts and one that can loom large with the onset of high school. It’s not uncommon for members of Troop

dience, kindergarteners to third graders.

Getz intends to submit a detailed report about it for his board of review.

“It doesn’t technically have to be that long,” Getz said. “You can make it pretty short. But I’m making mine longer (and more) detailed just because I’m going for Eagle Project of the Year.

A freshman at Granite Bay High School, Getz has carried a 3.8 grade point average through middle school and is interested in eventually working with computers. He looks forward to wrestling for Granite Bay. Will he follow the path of scouts who Eagle Out? Getz intends to stay involved if he has the time. Hooten is counting on this, too.

“He’s one of those kids I don’t have a problem finishing up,” Hooten said.

Asked if he’d do everything all over again, Getz said, “Yeah, I would. Boy Scouts, honestly, it has changed me a lot — leadership-wise, working with groups.”

He added, “I honestly couldn’t imagine myself not being a Boy Scout. I’m curious to see how different I would be. I’d probably be pretty different.”

It happens enough that there’s a phrase around the troop for it — “Eagling out.”

Hooten knows all too well how quickly scouts can drop off once they get to high school, when time can get tight and the social pressure of continuing to wear a uniform can sometimes be too much. He tries to keep them involved.

“I say, ‘Don’t worry about getting to all the troop meetings,’” Hooten said.

Getz’s parents Lianne and Wayne took no chances. Three years ago, their son Connor earned his Eagle Scout around the time he started high school. They made sure Parker did the same.

“This summer has been totally Eagle project,” Lianne Getz said.

Aside from earning 21 merit badges, the Eagle project is the crowning requirement for the rank. Some scouts opt for mini-construction or cleanup projects.

Getz chose something closer to his heart.

Born with a dairy allergy, Getz had to bring his own dehydrated meals on scout camping trips to avoid trips to the emergency room. Thus, he opted to make a seven-minute food allergy awareness video for his grade school, Greenhills Elementary.

It wasn’t just a matter of grabbing a video camera and heading out for an afternoon. An Eagle Project requires a meticulous level of planning and more than 100 hours of service. All work must be approved before it can count.

To take his video to the next level, Getz enlisted the help of his neighbor Chris Guzman, creative director for a Roseville-based marketing firm.

“I thought the project could go beyond what he was just doing,” Guzman said.

Guzman let Getz use professional-grade filming equipment that retails at around $8,000. Getz handled it competently.

“It was great to see him in action,” Guzman said. “He really took charge.”

The finished product, which stars a 2½ foot puppet and three kids who teach him about food allergies, is clean, well-lit and should keep the attention of its target au-

County continues to grow

Affordability, schools, shopping main draws for new residents

oseville Realtor Dave Hoggatt’s office overlooks a tangle of oaks and grasses, twittering with birds, along Miner’s Ravine. There’s little indication he works in a city of 132,000 and counting.

Not a car, housing development, shopping center or person is in sight.

“Not many people know about this sort of thing coming here,” Hoggatt said. “I love selling this area. It’s so easy, the product sells itself.”

Though the phenomenon isn’t new and evidence of a recent influx is largely anecdotal, Bay Area residents are flowing into the Sacramento region. According to a study of nearly 1 million Redfin real estate users in early 2017, more than 15,000 San Francisco residents were looking to live elsewhere. Their destination of choice?

Sacramento.

Census data from 2006 to 2015 illustrates that most of Placer County’s new residents during this 10-year span came from Sacramento County, trailed by the Bay Area.

San Mateo, Santa Clara and Solano counties had the highest number of relocators, though a handful of Placer residents left for Alameda and Sonoma counties.

There’s more data regarding the wider Sacramento region, but these census trends are much of what’s specific to Placer County. Counties keep track of property sales, according to Placer County Association of Realtors CEO Dean Anderson, but Realtors and the databases they use keep track of property history rather than buyer history.

The lack of more detailed county-specific data on Bay Area migration is something Hoggatt said he and his team are working on. In the meantime, his real estate group has created a website, iHeartPlacer.com, catered specifically to Bay Area residents looking to relocate to South Placer.

Hoggatt, who moved here from Oakland as a kid, said schools are a main driver. The abundance of outdoor activities,

shopping, dining and “small-town feel” of communities also bring people to the region. From a practical standpoint, Hoggatt said newer homes and cheaper utilities tend to attract Bay Area residents.

Shopping is a draw to Placer County in particular, according to Hoggatt. Other areas within the seven-county Sacramento region offer outdoor recreation and wine tasting, but Westfield Galleria and The Fountains provide the best retail for hundreds of miles, Hoggatt said.

However, Placer County’s main attraction seems to be affordability. For Eric Joseph and his wife, new Roseville residents as of April 2017, moving from San Jose allowed them to swap a condo for a 4,000-square-foot house at roughly the

same cost. San Jose native Luke Minton and his fiancee Kelsey have rented in Rocklin for two years, but are looking to buy a house in coming months.

“We’re saving money and planning for a future, which is virtually impossible in the Bay Area,” Minton said. “Every month, your check goes toward rent and food and it’s basically gone at that point.”

Minton and his fiancee aren’t the only ones planning for the future amidst all this growth. According to Sherri Conway, Placer County’s director of economic development, the county already has several large projects in the works that will allow the area to handle more residents.

“We have ample growth for folks wishing to move their lives and their businesses here, without compromising the quality of life,” Conway said. The county has plans for its unincorporated areas when the infrastructure needs to accommodate higher populations, Conway said, whether for universities, residential areas or a thoroughfare between Highways 65 and 99.

Though the interchange between Interstate 80 and Highway 65 is a common complaint among South Placer residents, Joseph is fine with it.

“There’s no comparison to a major in-

tersection of two freeways in the Bay Area,” Joseph said. “Someone might look at it and say that’s bad, but it’s 15 minutes and you’re through it.”

Traffic, schools and lower costs aside, Joseph’s favorite thing about the area so far has been the people.

Joseph admits South Placer’s friendliness, relative to Bay Area culture, has been something to get used to — that, and lack of a pizza delivery service in his area of Roseville. But he readily asserts that it’s his job to adjust to the area, versus expecting the opposite.

“That’s the biggest thing talking to locals — we’re not here to turn this into San Jose,” he said. “I left San Jose. I don’t want this to be the Bay Area, and it’s not just because I have a quadruple-sized house.

I want the small-town feel. We need to adapt to the culture of this county.”

efore Kathryn Crawford and her husband Roger moved to their home in The Residences, a neighborhood in Granite Bay, they had a huge house in Roseville. It had a private swimming pool and private tennis courts, but they didn’t meet their next-door neighbors until the day they packed up the moving truck.

By contrast, their new neighbors threw a wine-and-cheese party when she and her husband came to The Residences.

There’s still a pool and tennis courts, but on a community scale.

“We came here where there are the things we want, but they’re shared,” Hill says. “Of all the homes we’ve lived in, this is our favorite place and we have no intent in leaving.”

continued from page 22 four divisions — The Grove, The Retreat, The Estates and Volcano Ridge — line the course directly across East Roseville Parkway. Residents can even go under the parkway through a tunnel to get to the green without waiting for traffic.

According to Crawford, residents don’t have to be members of the club, and they don’t have to golf if they are members. She and Roger are members for the social perks, like holiday events, wine tastings and brunches, meals at the two clubhouse restaurants, Mackenzie’s and Tilly’s, among other gatherings. The club is a popular wedding spot and Hill says it’s nice to hear the ambience of laughter and families enjoying their time together carry over the hills to their home.

For resident Ed Reeder, who’s been playing golf with his wife for the past 20 years, the course was an incentive to move to the community. It’s not the only perk, though. Reeder says he loves knowing most of his neighbors and the sense of closeness the subdivision has.

“We love it,” he says. “It’s the longest place we’ve ever lived.”

The Granite Bay Golf Club was built around old oak trees, according to Crawford, and the neighborhood was developed with a similar respect for preserving the past. Modeled after historic Sacramento neighborhoods like the Fabulous Forties and McKinley Park, The Residences has narrow streets, a variety of house sizes and a wide range of architectural styles.

The homes were built to go along with the general landscape, Crawford says, and in turn the landscaping suits the ar-

chitecture of each individual home. For instance, a Tuscan-style home might be landscaped with flora reminiscent of central Italy. Crawford’s home is country French style and though they don’t have a backyard, their courtyard makes use of topiaries and fountains.

Most homes in the neighborhood were built between 1997 and 2002, according to Crawford, who serves as homeowners’ association president for The Residences. She says homes tend sell quickly but they don’t often go up for sale.

ership in the neighborhood, and attributes it to people taking pride in their community. He and his wife have lived in their home since it was finished in November 1998.

“People don’t leave here very often,” Crawford says.

COMMUNITY CAMARADERIE

With a long-standing group of residents, it may come as no surprise that the residents are tightly knit. For instance, not only does Crawford know the neighbor’s daughter who is cat-sitting for another neighbor on vacation, she knows the names of all the cats too.

“Everyone knows everyone and we look after each other,” Crawford says. “It’s a ‘knock on the neighbor’s door for a cup of sugar’ kind of thing. It’s more than a neighborhood, it’s a community.”

According to Crawford, her neighbors come from “all ages and stages of life.” In her case, she manages and markets her husband’s career as a motivational speaker and they have four children who have grown up and moved out. Otherwise, there are couples with no kids, young families, older

families, single residents and retired people.

Some are doctors and engineers, and some are on the artsy side of the job market: artists, authors, designers and architects.

And when the Residences’ residents aren’t working, tending to family or attending events? There’s always tee time.

he Placer County Planning Commission has granted a two-year extension for Pondview, a small office park to be built at 5650 Douglas Blvd. in Granite Bay. The Placer County Board of Supervisors approved entitlements for Pondview in June 2015, when it was known as Pond Pavilion and Lofts and was to include a 7,500-square-foot events center adjacent to Quarry Pond.

Lisa Powers, a principal for developer Powers Equity, Inc., said that because the events center would be considered in real estate terms a “special purpose project,” it proved too difficult to finance.

Quarry Ponds Shopping Center, which opened in 2006, struggled during the recession and sold at a foreclosure auction in December 2010 for $11 million, according to a story in the Roseville Press-Tribune at that time.

Powers said her new venture, Pondview, will feature small executive suites, known as “khaki suites,” with many attached services for tenants including a common area and beverage bar.

“This is typical of development,” Powers said. “All too often, the first idea that you bring forward is one that you can’t, you end up not doing. That’s one reason why development is risky and it’s expensive and speculative.”

She said she’s in talks with different pro-

spective lenders, with some banks requiring that 50 percent of units be leased or sold to agree to finance a possible project.

Powers said she’s had a lot of interested prospective tenants and that she’s hopeful construction can begin within a few months.

“There’s a certain amount of ramp-up time needed,” Powers said. “I’m hoping that we’re at the point we can start within a couple of months.”

The time extensions the commission granted, for a tentative parcel map, conditional use permit and variances last through June 16, 2019.

ith the temperatures rising above 100 degrees Fahrenheit during summer, our wine selection moves to cold, refreshing white wines. A majority of people will sway to chardonnay, but there are many other choices out there.

Sauvignon blanc is a dry, crisp and intensely aromatic variety with a firm streak of acidity. The Marlborough region in New Zealand is renowned for their vibrant gooseberry and exotic fruit flavors.

Riesling, most people would consider this to be a sweet wine.

Riesling is credited by many as the world’s best white grape variety. It typically produces a light, fragment wine with lively acidity, gloriously aromatic flavors and relatively low alcohol levels.

Rieslings come in a range of styles, from bone dry and minerally through lusciously sweet and fruity.

Chenin blanc is similar to Riesling, not in flavor but in range from bone dry to sweet. It has flavors of honey, lime and vanilla.

Pinot gris is a deep-colored white grape with subtle flavors of honey, smoke and spice. Styles differ from different regions around the world, from lighter, crisper flavors of Italy to richer robust flavors of a Californian pinot gris.

Viognier, whilst difficult to pronounce, produces a full-bodied dry wine with aromas of apricot and musk.

Gruner veltliner, grown predominantly in Austria, is slowly being introduced and grown in California and produces a full-bodied dry white with a distinctive spicy flavor.

This list can go on and on with many other varietals and white blends that are truly light and refreshing. But I would like to finish of with a lovely white blend from the northern region of Portugal called vinho verde. Most vinho verde is made from a field blend, vineyards interplanted with many different grape varieties. The wine is dry and slightly fizzy, low in alcohol and with high levels of acidity, making it an ideal summer pool wine.

hat a weekend that was! You went out, you ate and drank and had a blast! And now the fun is over and the consequences are setting in … you feel terrible. You woke up with a headache, an overall feeling of bloating and a sluggishness that you can’t shake.

It’s time to undo the damage brought on from that epic weekend. Here’s how…

1. NO MORE JUNK! It may sound obvious, but the first step to recovering from all that fun you had is to stop the damage. No more naughty foods.

No more alcohol.

When you are vacationing or partying, it’s easy to remove your mindful eating and drinking mechanism and replace it with the anything-goes mindset. This makes sense for party mode, but once you come back home and get back to real life, it’s important to firmly put an end to the junk food and calorie-laden beverages. If you don’t, then your weekend diet may continue into your week, resulting in tons of extra calories that quickly add up in unwanted pounds.

2. FLUSH YOUR SYSTEM. For the next 48 hours, your main mission is to drink as much water as possible.

All of those poor food and drink choices result in dehydration, which manifests in a pounding headache and a feeling of sluggishness. Plan to sip on water throughout the next two days, add-

ing in fresh sliced fruit, cucumbers, mint or basil to add a refreshing and rewarding flavor.

3. GET SOME REST. End the party or vaycay Sunday afternoon so that you can get into bed early in preparation for the week ahead. It may not sound super exciting to plan an early-to-bed night at the end of your weekend, but come Monday morning, you will be functioning much better with a little rest under your belt. Plan to get to bed early the next couple of days as well, and fit in a nap if possible.

4. EAT CLEANSING FOODS. You’ve stopped eating junk, now fill your diet with small light meals consisting of fiber and a serving of protein. Stick with only whole foods for the next 48 hours.

Fruits and fresh veggies should make up the bulk of your calories as you recover. Asparagus, leafy greens, citrus fruits, and raw veggies are all wonderful items to enjoy in addition to high quality, low fat protein.

5. AVOID GOING EXTREME. Yes, you ate and drank a LOT this weekend, but swinging the pendulum too far in the other direction isn’t actually going to help. Overcompensation is rarely a winning idea.

Fight the urge to skip meals or to over-exercise in response to your indulgences. Going from one extreme to the other creates a bad cycle that leaves you feeling even more tired. In addition, taking your body from feast to famine will actually make you more prone for fat storage.

Getting and staying in great shape will not only help you bounce back from the weekend faster, it will also help you achieve healthy habits that will stick with you even as you party and vacation.

To those valiant parents who are raising boys in today’s culture I ask you a question. When will your youth know he has become a man? What training is equipping him with so he will be confidant and secure in his identity and capacity to stand tall in a world filled with confusing messages. Boys2Men was developed by a small group of men in the community who wanted to bring father and sons together so that godly values were passed on to the the next generation. The rite of

passage in one day was not effective and they felt that creating a monthly meeting with like minded dads and sons would develop friendships as well as encouragement for the sons to become the man God intended for them to become. Seven core values were chosen and then competitive games and food along with a PPT presentation with a variety of speakers became the monthly meeting model.

Most significantly dads had time at the meeting to reinforce the value being discussed 1 on 1 and it set the platform for more significant conversations in the future. Boys without dads present were welcome to come and be included with the process. The final meeting and banquet with family and friends present, as broad awards were handed

out and boys make their declaration of young manhood was a highlight.

Most boys are craving for these generational tools as well as the shared experience with their dad.
