WALKING: A HEALTHY HABIT EVERYBODY SHOULD GET INTO Less intense than running (but also less demanding for the joints!), walking is an excellent form of exercise that shouldn’t be underestimated. In fact, when practiced regularly—for 30 minutes a day, five days a week—walking is extremely beneficial for your health. Whether done at a moderate or rapid pace, it helps improve cardiovascular health, burns calories and reduces stress and anxiety!

Walking provides a long list of benefits. For example, it’s affordable and can easily be incorporated into your daily schedule. Just choose to walk to your destination whenever possible. It’s as simple as that! Depending on your preference, you can walk alone or with a group, either along local streets or in a more natural setting. What’s more, walking is a great way to stimulate your creativity and organize your thoughts while you exercise.

COOK YOUR VEGGIES IN THE MICROWAVE! Boiling vegetables actually deprives them of valuable water-soluble nutrients. In fact, any method of cooking will affect the nutritional value of your food, especially if overcooked. The microwave, however, provides a quick and efficient way to heat up your meal that requires little water. So next time you’re debating on how to cook your veggies, consider steaming them in the microwave to preserve their nutritional goodness!

WHAT ARE THE BEST SOURCES OF VITAMIN C? Vitamin C, which among other things is a powerful antioxidant, has multiple benefits for the body. It’s found mainly in fruits and vegetables. Peppers, broccoli and the cabbage family are the best sources in vegetables.

Guavas, then kiwis and finally oranges are the best sources among fruits.

‘DESERT BEST FRIEND’S CLOSET’ HELPS VALLEY RESIDENTS ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS

E

ffort is admirable, but results are even better, especially when they change people’s lives by bringing them employment, economic independence, and self-confidence.

Just ask Connie Golds, the founder and CEO of Desert Best Friend’s Closet (DBFC), which she launched in 2008 as a way to assist Coachella Valley residents on their pathway to employment, productivity and bettering their lives.

The organization partners and collaborates with other local agencies and donors to provide interview-appropriate attire at no cost to individuals seeking employment who do not have the means to purchase the attire themselves. Clients are also coached on how to dress appropriately and learn skills to land the job.

In the beginning, DBFC originally operated out of the founders’ homes. What a difference a decade (and a lot of hard work) makes.

Golds and her veritable mule team of employees and volunteers now provide individualized wardrobe and image assistance to clients has helped nearly 2,000 participants over the years. Current programs include the Interview Attire Program, Bridge to Employment (interview and resume coaching), Warriors to Work, Military Ball Gown Program, Prom Dress Program and Bras for a Cause.

Prime Time sat down with Connie Golds for an interview.

PT: What inspired you to launch this project in 2008?

Princess Project or the Glass Slipper Project, where girls in need can get a prom dress. I was surprised there wasn’t anything like that here since we know there is a great need and as well as many generous people. I got the idea about interview clothing, so we surveyed Job Expo employers who felt there was a need. Then it was just a matter of collecting clothes and figuring out a way to manage it. We started small—working out of our houses—but then grew and needed a location to better serve our clients. We moved to our current location over three years ago. Now we are more accessible to our clients by being on the main bus line.

PT: Can you tell us of a “success story”?

CG: My co-founder (Julie Arthur) and I realized something was missing from our valley.

PT: What are the biggest challenges DBFC faces?

to ring when he or she finds a job, then after a certain number of days they come back and receive free items of clothing at repeat intervals.

This is truly a win-win for all.

My favorite success story is about a homeless veteran, Scott, whom we served 18 months ago, as part of our Warriors to Work initiative which helps vets. Scott had been using library computers to search for work. He didn’t have

any nice clothes for an interview - just work boots, chinos and the cleanest shirt he could find. He had a job interview scheduled, but when he opened the door to the waiting room, he saw a room filled with men and women in suits. He shut the door, turned and left. Then he was referred to us. He shared that he was ashamed of his homelessness, but he was grateful that when my volunteers greeted him

CG: Like many small, grassroots nonprofits, we are understaffed. There’s too much to do and not enough time.

We have a group of very dedicated volunteers, but we could always use more. Some volunteers act as personal “stylists”, helping dress clients for interviews, and others are job “mentors” helping clients with their resumes and employment searches. We also need members of the business community to participate in “mock interviews.”

The desert community is very supportive of our programs. We are blessed with many fabulous clothing donations, but we still need

We have a “clothing gap” - the gap in donations of sizes of what people actually donate and the sizes of clothing we need. While we need ALL sizes of clothing, we have a high demand for plus-sized clothing for both men and women.

PT: Anything else you want to share with readers about this fabulous project that does so much for our community?

CG: As a member of the Alliance of Career Development Nonprofits (ACDN), we are excited to be hosting our annual conference in Palm Springs this October (acdnonline.org/2017-annualconference). DBFC will also be recognized by the desert chapter of Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) as “Outstanding Founder of a Local Nonprofit” this November on National Philanthropy Day. As the DBFC website reminds us, “Someone’s Future is Hanging in Your Closet.” DBFC accepts donations Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 74-040 Highway 111, Suite F in Palm Desert (next door to Kaiser Grille). All clothing should be clean, on hangers and ready to wear, and tax receipts are available. Donations for DBFC are also accepted at The Wardrobe in Palm Springs, and new or gently used bras are accepted at Soma Intimates in Palm Desert.

Options for coping and caring for a senior parent

C

aring for senior parents is all about juggling. Caregivers have busy lives, attending to jobs, relationships and life’s countless errands. Some are still raising underage children or grandchildren. So when eldercare is added to the mix, how do you cope? Is it possible to be a good daughter and a good mother at the same time? Does your job performance have to suffer? Are there ever enough hours in the day?

Women in particular often think they can do it ALL by themselves but Caregiver Burnout is real with warning signs and health con-

sequences. So, as demands on your time and attention increase, you also need to remember to take care of yourself.

Both aging and caregiving seem to fall into stages with help available for most situations.

Stage One: Your parent is still living alone in their home but you’re assisting with finances, errands, doctor’s appointments, medication, house cleaning, transportation, etc. Since falling is a real danger, the Life Alert program offers a personal alarm system to summon help.

And get your siblings, spouse, and children

involved in regular visits during which everyone can pitch in with gardening, housekeeping and meal prep.

Since taking care of the caregiver (you) is so important, encourage your parent to enjoy social activities while you attend to other business. Check out senior community centers and government-funded and private adult day-care. If you’re still feeling stressed out, try “mini-vacations”– leisure activities that can be enjoyed in flexible periods of time. or standing, it may be time for a driving assessment, a difficult but necessary preventative action.

Stage Two: At some point, you’ll probably think about moving your parent into your home. If so, be sure to involve him or her in decision-making whenever possible. It may be

necessary to rent or sell the home he or she has lived in for years. This, along with a loss of privacy and autonomy can be difficult to navigate.

t’s tough to find a fun activity for when temps in the low desert are triple-digits long after sundown. This time of year, much of our active outdoor lifestyle takes place early in the morning. But there is a sport you can enjoy any afternoon or evening in the comfort of air conditioning—bowling.

If you haven’t been to a bowling alley recently, you might be surprised by what you find. It’s a colorful proposition these days with laser light shows, padded bumpers, and gaming arcades.

Bowling is international. As far as the game’s origins are concerned, British Archaeologist Sir Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) believed that it existed in ancient Egypt because crude balls and pins were found in the tomb of an Egyptian Pharaoh. The ancient Polynesians bowled on lanes that were the same length as today (60 feet) and during the fourth century CE, it was part of some German religious rites.

But, certainly by the time King Henry VIII was practicing tough love with his six wives,

bowling was firmly established as a favorite pastime in the British Isles and throughout Europe.

The sport (or is it a game?) was introduced to the US in Colonial Times. And while its popularity hit a peak in the 1950s and 60s, bowling is still big business. According to the United States Bowling Congress, there are over three million avid, regular adherents in America with all ages and economic demographics robustly represented nationwide in both organized leagues and casual play.

Lay out single slice of prosciutto, place 1 tablespoon cheese mixture on top of peach wedge and top with basil leaf. Place wedge at one end of prosciutto and roll up. Understanding the Serious Nature

K

nowing the warning signs of a ministroke could help save a life. A survey conducted by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association shows one-third of United States adults have had symptoms consistent with a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a mini-stroke, but only three percent called 911 for help.

“Ignoring any stroke signs could be a deadly mistake,” says Mitch Elkind, M.D., chair of the American Stroke Association Advisory Committee. “Only a formal medical diagnosis with brain imaging can determine whether you’re having a TIA or a stroke.”

The survey showed 35 percent of respondents experienced at least one sign of a TIA or mini-stroke, such as sudden trouble speaking or a severe headache with no known cause.

According to the online survey, those who suffered symptoms were more likely to wait it

out, rest or take medicine rather than call 911.

Stroke is a leading cause of serious, longterm adult disability in the United States and among the top five causes of death. However, with proper, timely medical attention, stroke is largely treatable. The faster you are treated, the more likely you are to have a positive outcome.

The American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative teaches the acronym F.A.S.T. to help people remember the most common stroke warning signs and what to do in a stroke emergency: F – Face drooping A – Arm weakness S – Speech difficulty T – Time to call 911 While the symptoms are the same, the difference between a TIA and a stroke is that the

blockage is temporary, lasting between a few minutes and 24 hours. People who suffer a TIA, sometimes called a warning stroke, are more likely to have a stroke within 90 days, according to the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association.

Elkind says anyone who experiences a stroke warning sign that appears suddenly, whether it goes away or not, should call 911 immediately. This could improve the chances of an accurate diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

Stroke symptoms come on suddenly with no known cause and may include confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; trouble seeing in one or both eyes; trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; or a severe headache.

The advantage of dollar-cost averaging is that you put your money into the market earlier-increasing the likelihood of price changerather than holding onto cash until you think prices are low. Regardless of whether you have a flat, positive, or negative price return, if your investments earn dividends, dollarcost averaging is a useful strategy for earning dividend returns.

RIDE THE MARKET BY TRACKING AN INDEX AND OPTIMIZE YOUR COSTS. Trying to achieve alpha-i.e., beating the market with price returns-isn’t necessarily the most evidence-based way of getting the highest returns over time, especially looking at your returns net of costs and taxes.

Also, investment losses can be “harvested” via a process called “tax-loss harvesting,” and that’s generally a process many investors cannot do themselves.

Finally, any time you want to reinvest dividends or have reason to switch to a different investment, there are ways to make regular transactions as tax-efficient as possible. The same goes for making your eventual withdraw-
