diet. The 10-30 minute film shorts will make you laugh, cry and think.

They’re like brain candy that’s healthy for your mind and spirit.

A few weeks ago, we wrote about the Short Fest, which presents hundreds of delightful “film-ettes” grouped by theme along with film parties, filmmaker and actor meet and greets, behind the scenes educational panels

and a virtual reality lounge which is free to the public.

We are now able to bring updates on the line up of 338 spectacular films which have officially been announced for the summer program.

The Festival takes place at the Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs, and tickets are now on sale for passes, 6 Packs and Opening and Closing

Night Awards Ceremony tickets.

The Association of Mature American Citizens reports that a study conducted by Dr. Johan Lundstrom at Philadelphia’s Monell Chemical Senses Center, found that the older you are the better you smell.

In fact, the 75 to 90 year old participants in the study were judged have more pleasant underarm odor than young and middle-aged adults.

Social Security Matters: “Ask Rusty” - Spousal benefits lost Social Security Matters by A MAC Certified Social Security Advisor Russell Gloor, Association of Mature American Citizens Dear Rusty: I took my Social Security at 62 since I had to stop working to care for my mom when I was 57. I was widowed at the time but remarried when I was 58 1/2 years old. I collected on my own work record, which was low. Why didn’t I get half of my present husband’s benefit when he started benefits at his full retirement age? I am 70 now. Will I get his full Social Security if he dies before me?

Signed: Missing Benefits Dear Missing: Yours is an issue which we unfortunately see occasionally with folks who have been collecting their own benefits for a long time and later become entitled to more than they have been receiving. This situation arises with couples where the lower-earning spouse filed for Social Security before their higherearning spouse applied. The lowerearning spouse (spouse#1) got benefits based upon their own work record

only and received no spousal benefit because the higher-earning spouse (spouse#2) had not yet filed. Later on, when spouse#2 finally filed for benefits, spouse#1 became eligible for a “spousal boost” (if their spousal benefit was more than their own), but it did not happen automatically; that “spousal boost” had to be applied for when spouse #2 started benefits.

Unfortunately many people didn’t realize this, assuming that the benefit they received when they first filed is what they get for the rest of their life.

They might also have assumed that Social Security automatically made the spousal adjustment for them, which wasn’t the case. As a result, we find that some spouses have lost thousands of dollars in benefits, simply because they did not know they had to actually apply for spousal benefits when they became eligible for them.

A similar situation might exist where someone who was single and already receiving benefits marries a higherearning person already collecting Social Security benefits. Again in this case, spousal benefits must have been applied for to be received. Note that

since the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 was enacted, everyone applying for Social Security is “deemed filing” for both their own and spousal benefits, but that doesn’t mitigate this particular issue because both spouses applied for benefits prior to the new rules becoming effective.

In your specific case, you became eligible for your additional spousal benefit as soon as your present husband’s benefits began. Assuming your husband is about the same age as you, if ½ of your husband’s benefit at his full retirement age of 66 was more than your own benefit, this means that you have gone for about 4 years without receiving the added spousal benefits you are entitled to. So, the first thing you should do is to contact Social Security as soon as possible and apply for your spousal benefits (or do it online at ssa.gov). When you do this, be sure to make the effective date of those benefits 6 months prior to the date you file, because Social Security will pay you up to 6 months of retroactive benefits. Unfortunately, the remaining 3 ½ years of the benefits you were entitled to but didn’t claim

may be lost. There is at least some chance, if your husband listed you as a spouse when he applied, that Social Security might give you more than six months retroactive, so you should make an appointment and explain what happened to see if anything more can be recovered.

As to your second question, yes, upon your husband’s death you will receive 100% of the benefit he was receiving, instead of the benefit you are already receiving.

Your Cookbook Cherry Bruschetta INGREDIENTS | SERVES: 8 • 18 slices (1/2-inch thick) small baguette-style bread • 1 tablespoon olive oil, divided • 1 1/2 cups pitted Northwest fresh sweet cherries, coarsely chopped • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro • 1/4 cup diced yellow sweet pepper • 2 tablespoons finely chopped green onions • 2 tablespoons lime juice • 1 teaspoon grated lime peel • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt

• 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper • 2 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese • 1 tablespoon thinly sliced fresh basil PREPARATION 1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. Arrange baguette slices on cookie sheet and toast one side 5 minutes.

Turn slices, brush with 1/2 tablespoon olive oil and bake 5 minutes longer.

3. Combine cherries, cilantro, sweet pepper, green onions, lime juice, lime peel, garlic salt, pepper and remaining olive oil; mix well.

4. Top each baguette with thin slice of cheese, 1 tablespoon cherry mixture and sprinkle of sliced basil. Serve warm or cold.

Easy Egg Casserole INGREDIENTS | SERVINGS: 4 • Nonstick cooking spray • 1 cup lean ham, cubed • 1 cup frozen seasoned potatoes with onions and peppers • 3/4 cup frozen spinach, chopped • 1/2 cup lowfat cheddar or Swiss cheese, shredded • 6 eggs • 3/4 cup milk

Directed and produced by Thomas Grascoeur, this is the film’s North American premiere.

Commodity City: This combined Chinese/American film project is a fascinating look at the Yiwu Markets in China, the largest wholesale consumer market in the world, where every commodity imaginable is for sale. The film is directed by Jessica Kingdon and runs 11 minutes.

The Eleven O’Clock: The delusional patient of a psychiatrist believes he is actually the psychiatrist. As each attempts to treat the other, the session gets out of control. This story of

twists and turns is 13 minutes, from Australian director Derin Seale.

Game Night: This Dutch film entry centers around a young woman’s competitive nature which incurs the wrath of her boyfriend’s equally determined mother, and a family trivia game turns into a steely battle of wills. Directed and produced by Jan van Gorkum, this film is 15 minutes.

The Greater Good: This story, about a man named Thomas who is at a crossroads in both his personal and professional lives and who reluctantly attends his 25th birthday lunch at his family’s home. From Austria, the 21 minute film is written, directed and produced by Franziska Zaiser.

Our Barrio: This film from the U.S. highlights the tale of Gabriela, a young woman on the verge of adulthood, who struggles with her identity. Twenty-nine minutes long and directed by Ryan Casselman, the short is an exploration of the Latino American—and human—experience.

Penny Sucker: After the death of his mother, a young man struggles to connect with his father while revealing an odd addiction. Filmed in nearby Joshua Tree and directed by Erin Elders, this American film is 11 minutes.

Sandy Beach: This story line, which takes place along the coast, is about a woman who takes her father for their usual Sunday swim. Sandy Beach is 12 minute long Greek film, directed by Thanos Papastergiou.

Sibling Stories: With life’s myriad challenges, the bond that exists between siblings can at times comfort in ways no others can...or exacerbate the conflict even further. This 29 minute film is from the United States and is directed by Annabel Oakes.

Seven budget-friendly tips for eating organic Have you been meaning to include more organic foods in your diet, but the thought of spending even more on groceries is holding you back? Read on for some tips on how to eat organic without breaking the bank.

1. Eat seasonal. Organic or not, fruits and vegetables cost significantly more when they’re not in season.

2. Buy in bulk. Packaged goods are more expensive — plastic and cardboard come at a price! Buying things like grains, cereal, dried fruit, pasta, coffee, meat and nuts in bulk will save you a lot of money.

I really like that! I’m giving kisses in return so I have it in me to be sweet–I hope to get better with playtime! I’m still young and hope to learn by example.

1914: First newspaper in Palm Springs hits the streets The Red Front Store News debuted in August, making it Palm Springs’ first newspaper. When Otto Adler arrived in Palm Springs, he set up a small grocery store out of a tent where he sold supplies. He soon built a larger store and an adjacent hotel called the Red Front Store and Hotel on the west side of Main Street (now Palm Canyon Drive). His paper consisted of promotions and sales for his store.

However, the newspaper did report the goings and comings and highlights of the citizenry. A quote from the News, “Sorry to hear Mr. Bisbee lost one of his valuable mules this week, just as he began shipping grapes and needed him.”

he immensely successful partnership of George Burns and Gracie Allen began on the vaudeville stage.

Burns (Nathan Birnbaum) was part of a harmonysinging quartet as a young boy, who quit school in the fourth grade to break into show business full-time.

Gracie, on stage since age three, was part of a four-sister dance act. The two met in 1922, teamed up personally and professionally and, for 38 years, created a unique blend of marriage and career. They toured the country and caught on big time. George wrote their act, portraying himself as the straight man, setting up Gracie to deliver the punchlines.

Burns & Allen went on to a successful, long-running radio program, and, just like their pal Jack Benny and other stars of those early radio days who made the transition to television, played themselves in “The George Burns & Gracie Allen Show,” which aired for eight seasons with reliably high ratings. George continued writing for the show, along with added writers.

Always an innovative thinker, he was the first to employ the technique of breaking the fourth wall, stepping out of character to talk directly to the audience. During the eighth season, Gracie grew tired of the daily grind and, beset with health problems, said

good night for the last time and retired from the show. Without Gracie, the show lost much of its popularity and was cancelled the following year.

George created a short-lived series for himself and Connie Stevens, “Wendy and Me,” which ran opposite “I Love Lucy” and folded in the first year.

Following Gracie’s death in 1964, a brokenhearted George busied himself with work, performing in nightclubs and concerts. Burns’ appearance with Walter Matthau in the “The Sunshine Boys” at age 80 earned him an Academy Award and the added distinction of being the oldest Oscar recipient ever. Offered the title role in “Oh, God,” Burns accepted, stating, “The happiest people I know are the ones still working.”

George Burns continued to delight with his song and dance comedy routines and worked well into his 90’s.

He booked himself at Caesar’s Palace for his 100th birthday, declaring, “I can’t die, I’m booked!” He didn’t make the show, but he did make 100, dying of cardiac arrest less than two months later.

Burns & Allen spent many happy years in the desert with their famous show business friends and were among the founding members of Tamarisk County Club in Rancho Mirage. Burns & Allen Road can now be found there.
