History and Elegance Fuse with the Beauty of Wine Country The Beringer name may be something you’ve heard before.

Maybe often. It’s safe to say Beringer is a well-known brand associated with a heritage of innovative winemaking that produces quality wine.

What’s less well known is the history of the Beringer family and how it helped establish Napa Valley as a world-class wine region.

That said, a visit to Napa Valley would be incomplete without spending a few hours at the Beringer winery estate in St. Helena including the sprawling, manicured grounds, the Beringer family’s original dating back to the 1800s, a wine cave, gift shops and exquisite gardens.

The winery has been offering tours of its facilities and grounds for 82 years; it was the first to offer public tours in Napa Valley. Its walking tours offer visitors a peek into the contributions of the Beringer family … to winemaking and to the local history.

Visitors can choose between the half-hour Legacy Cave Tour, which travels through the Old Winery and historic wine tunnels, and the hour-long Taste of Beringer tour, which features a walk around the property, a barrel tasting and a sitdown tasting in the historic Rhine House.

Both tours offer an intimate window into the rich history of the winery, its founders and the buildings on site. Beringer is the oldest continuously operating winery in Napa Valley; 2016 will mark its 140th harvest.

In 1875, Brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer purchased 215 acres on the site, which already had a house and 23 acres planted with wine grapes. Jacob lived in the house and grew the winery while Frederick attended to business in New York.

The winery survived Prohibition by making wine for the Catholic Church during those years.

In 1971, the family sold the winery, which is now owned by Treasury Wine Estates. But the Beringer family continues to have a hand in its namesake winery. Mark Beringer, the greatgreat-grandson of Jacob Beringer, became chief winemaker last year. He follows a line of only eight winemakers in the winery’s history.

Though Beringer has been around a long time, the winery continues to modernize and adapt.

The Beringer Culinary Series combines food education with great wines to create an unforgettable experience. Beringer Executive Chef Daryl Muromoto will lead a seminar on creating pasta from scratch and pairing with Beringer wine.
