Johnny Cash comes back to life in American Legend

After devoting several hundred hours of research on the man in black, Sunny Mitchell, producer of American Legend, said she found that not only was his music phenomenal, but his life as well. Mitchell is pleased to share Cash’s unique story through music and movement.

The performance will show Cash’s highs and lows, his successes and failures, which in all kept him going, Mitchell said.

Mitchell said she incorporated gospel music into the production to show the audience the first music Cash had ever sung and wanted to record.

“I also wanted folks to know about the incredible musicians that played with Johnny Cash; so there’s an Elvis tune, a Carl Perkins tune and several tunes made famous by the Statler Brothers,” she said. “Something else that’s different that a typical tribute act wouldn’t have is that I’ve included a number of songs that were inspired by Vivian Cash, Johnny Cash’s first wife and the mother of his four daughters.”

Mitchell assembled a cast of nearly 20 artists and she wanted to make sure people know they aren’t impersonators, but simply giving homage to Cash, the Carter family and all the musicians who inspired him.

Mitchell said because Cash is special to the City of Folsom, she approached the city last year with her idea about making the debut a fundraiser for the Johnny Cash Art Trail.

“Robert Goss, the Folsom Parks and Recreation director, appreciated the gesture and agreed to partner with us. We had a wonderful debut at both Lakeside Church and the Harris Center last summer,” Mitchell said. “We were able to donate $5,000 to the trail!”

Mitchell said the talent her cast embodies is extraordinary.

“We have quite a span in ages. Our youngest member will be a senior in high school, and our oldest, well, let’s not talk about that,” she said.

One member of the cast knows about Cash all too well being a native to Folsom herself. Lauren Metzinger will be singing songs inspired by Vivian Cash and said she is excited about returning to her home town to perform in American Legend.

“My role in American Legend is to portray the style and life of Vivian Liberto, Johnny Cash’s first wife,” Metzinger said. “When people talk about Cash’s life, his marriage with Vivian often gets overshadowed by his second marriage to June Carter. And through American Legend, audience members are able to see the joy and heartbreak of Johnny Cash’s entire career from beginning to end, including Vivian’s impact. Most people don’t know that he wrote the famous song, ‘I Walk the Line,’ as a testament of his love for Vivian.”

Metzinger said just as Cash and Vivian met as teenagers at a roller skating rink, her grandparents met the same way. She said this is just one of many ways she feels connected for Vivian.

“I can’t wait to come back to Folsom and bring this character to life again. To perform in honor of Johnny Cash in the very town that inspired one of his most famous songs, ‘Folsom Prison Blues,’ is truly incredible,” she said. “What is special about American Legend is that it is not only a concert with popular songs by Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and the Carter Family, but it is also a story about one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, the man in black, Johnny Cash.”

Metzinger currently resides in Nashville, Tenn., where she is earning a bachelor of fine arts in musical theater at Belmont University.

Along with Metzinger, many of the American Legend cast has performed locally with El Dorado Musical Theatre, STC’s Young Professional’s Conservatory as well as Sacramento Music Circus and more.

Mitchell said she is looking forward to the special 50th anniversary of the Folsom Prison Album in January and the debut of her newest concert — Poets and Pioneers: The Birth of American Country Music.

Sunny Mitchell is a choreographer, instructor and entertainment developer. Her career has included many principal and solo roles during her tenure with the Sacramento Ballet and California Musical Theatre. Harris Center unveils season’s line-up Submitted By harris center for the Arts Bringing great shows from around the world, across the country and throughout the region, the Harris Center for the Arts’ new 2017-18 season is on sale now.

The Harris Center is the one venue in the greater Sacramento region that unites national tours of Broadway blockbusters like “Dirty Dancing” with international phenomenas like the Sachal Ensemble, while offering a home for both local arts organizations (El Dorado Musical Theatre and the Folsom Lake Symphony) and local promoters (SBL Entertainment and Carerra Productions).

With an unwavering commitment to building community through memorable performances, the Harris Center is a busy, vibrant hub of cultural activity hosting upward of 400 events per year.

Highlights for the season are many. It marks the debut of the Big Stage Series, featuring the national tours of Broadway musicals “Dirty Dancing,” “Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella,” “Motown The Musical” and “Amazing Grace,” as well as (just for fun) “Mummenschanz.”

Mark Hummel’s Blues Harmonica Blow Out this year focuses on Chicago blues greats, while Take Me To The River Live with William Bell, Bobby Rush and Charlie Musselwhite celebrates the music of Memphis. New Orleans is center stage in a special concert featuring R&B great Irma Thomas together with The Blind Boys of Alabama and The Preservation Hall Legacy Quintet.

International dance offerings include Festival of South African Dance, Tango Buenos Aires, Dublin Irish Dance, Moscow Festival Ballet and Lezginka, The State Dance Company of Daghestan. World music offerings include Pakistan’s Sachal Ensemble, Chile’s Inti-Illimani and Niyaz whose music fuses traditional Persian with electronica.

Two pre-eminent women of country music, Terri Clark and Tanya Tucker, are featured in the season, as well as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Johnny Cash’s legendary recording in Folsom Prison — on the actual anniversary date of the famed concert.

Nowhere else in the region is there such a rich mix of holiday fare under one roof and 2017 will continue this tradition with more than 30 holiday-themed performances. Sloughhouse a tiny town famous for corn Story and photos By Bill Sullivan

David Ranch booming at harvest season’s peak When the triple-digit temperatures hit, it means something sweet is abundantly available just south of Folsom. It’s commonly referred to as “Sloughhouse corn” as it is harvested at a roadside ranch. Known as Davis Ranch, the corn is grown in the heart of the small community of Sloughhouse, a short drive that is well worth it.

What started in 1972 as a little season produce table at the side of Jackson Highway, has since grown into one of the area’s most popular destinations when it comes to fresh fruits, vegetables and most notably, corn. Along with the fresh eats comes a visit to place where homegrown, hospitality and old school come together.

“Everyone calls it Sloughhouse corn, if it’s Sloughhouse corn it came from the fields of Davis Ranch, we are Sloughhouse corn,” Rick Grimshaw said, one of three partners who operate the ranch. “This is the only place you can get the real thing, by coming out here and experiencing it. We see about 1,000 people a day on average now, it’s pretty amazing.”

with Grimshaw, who grew up just down the street from the ranch and was born into the life of farming. When he was a child, Grimshaw’s father Roland farmed corn down the street. After going to work for Davis when he was 12 years old, Grimshaw saw his summer job transform into one of the most

popular corn farms in the region.

Davis was a smart businessman, growing his business one step at time and being diligent in the way of expanding year after year, never taking on more than he could handle and often times making due of the resources he had.

“He never spent more than he was going make, that’s how he did business,” Grimshaw said.

As the popularity grew, the size of Davis Ranch grew as well as the work force. Today the ranch consists of 500 acres of combined Davis Ranch land and local leased land. The farm employs just over three dozen workers.

nology and equipment to manage their crops, Davis Ranch uses the same techniques they began with more than 50 years ago.

“We’re old school when it comes to planting and harvesting and you know what?

Old school works just great,” he said. “We’ve only grown in size through the years other than that we haven’t changed the way we do business.”

The famed Sloughhouse corn from Davis Ranch is known for its great tenderness and sweetness. Walking the fields, Grimshaw picked an ear off one of the stalks ready for harvest and ate it raw, donning a smile of delight.

“You hardly have to cook this corn, just warm it slightly and you will maintain the great flavor,” he said. “Many ask what our secret is and why our corn is so sweet. It’s pretty simple: It’s fresh. It’s not special dirt, or techniques, it’s fresh. When you buy corn here, it was picked that same day and that is as fresh as it gets.”

In addition to their varieties of yellow, white and small amount of cross pollination corn, Davis Ranch offers many other products that are grown on site. In the early months of the year, Asparagus starts off the season that later includes strawberries, tomatoes, cantaloupe, watermelons, green beans, peppers, squash cucumbers and more. The ranch also sells various nuts and home-baked pies. All of their produce are reasonably priced; a bag with eight ears of corn is just a few dollars but enjoy an experience that is priceless.

“We don’t sell to the stores, many stores may claim they have Sloughhouse corn but they don’t,” he said. “We want people to come out here and have the farm experience and have the opportunity to enjoy all the fresh products we have. If we were to sell to the stores, they wouldn’t have that.”

“If you come at the end of the day, you’re taking your chances of what we have left.

August sure comes up quickly. In this town, that means back to school time — already. I’m sure the kids feel like summer just started.

Schools are such an important part of our community. They also impact our home values and increase the area’s desirability. As a Realtor, I hear firsthand from future residents just how important it is to have high-performing schools for their kids to attend. In my experience, school performance is usually in the top two of what’s important to the buyer. Just how a buyer picks Folsom or El Dorado Hills as a future place for their home varies. Sometimes it’s a job transfer. Other times, it’s looking for an area that is less expensive than the Bay Area and offers high value. School scores and ratings alone are important. But more than likely, the school’s performance and boundary lines play an important part of a family’s decision on where to move. Oh yeah. Utility costs are a factor too.

Many people simply use greatschools.org. There, it’s easy to see that Sandra J. Gallardo Elementary School receives a GreatSchools rating of 10 – the highest score awarded.

Some want to know more. That’s where the California School Dashboard Report comes in. This column is not meant to be a primer on the details of California Department of Education’s accountability system, but it’s important to have a basic understanding of how schools are now measured.

California uses a School Dashboard Report that includes 10 indicators of school success. The score is based on student performance on standardized tests.

Now, anyone with access to the Internet can visit the California School Dashboard website and see that the same Gallardo Elementary School gets the highest score awarded English language arts, English learner progress and suspension rate for spring 2017. They received the second highest score for math. You can also see change from previous year and student performance by various groups. Similarly, district information for local indicators is as easy to access and read.

As a result, dashboard reporting may allow our local schools

have more opportunity to shine in the eyes of the public and those interested in moving to this area. It seems like people are still moving into the Folsom area as quickly as they can.

They’re also moving as quickly as they can just to see and bid on the home.

I recently had a current listing in Folsom where the home went on the market on a Friday around noon. By 6 p.m., a handful of showings occurred and an offer had already been submitted, followed by another offer the following morning, and more showings, and more showings.

If a home is presented to reflect the price and priced effectively, the seller should expect to receive one or more offers in a reasonable amount of time. So what’s a reasonable amount of time? Well, at my deadline for this column, there were 131 homes on the market in Folsom. That’s really low.

Our high-water mark so far this year was 171 in May. In July 2016, 215 homes were on the market, July 2015 had 212.

July is usually one of the months of the year with the highest number of homes available. No more water shortage, just a homes-on-the-market shortage. So for the first half of 2017, in Folsom, the average home sold was almost $511,000, up from last year. Homes also sold in an average of just 20 days on the market. Twenty days, I know. For you buyers that are trying to get their offer accepted, you call B@#! S*&#. As soon as you see the home come on the market, you rush out to see it, make a buying decision in 20 minutes flat before dinner, just to find out that someone else has also submitted an offer.

And then someone else. This happens in a weekend, not 20 days.

Now’s a great time to sell. I also work with lots of buyers and help them through the buying process and regain control. I talk with sellers and buyers about these topics and more all the time. With proper planning and a good Realtor, you can smoothly get to your next stage in life.

Flightz Restaurant is the newest addition to the La Borgata Plaza in El Dorado Hills and it is sure to make your taste buds soar.

Co-owner Michael Griffith is passionate about cooking and when you hear him talk about food, he lights up the room. Griffith’s friends told him to start a restaurant, but he was hesitant at first.

After thinking it through, he sold his previous business and started the venue search with co-owner and partner Elisa Michals-Griffith.

The couple searched high and low for two-and-a-half years until they stumbled upon a vacant suite in the La Borgata Plaza.

Griffith said the second they walked in, they knew it was exactly what they were looking

for. After some renovations and paint, Flightz Restaurant was on its way and opened May 12.

At Flightz, flights are what you get — from flights of beer, to wine and even the food.

“I started messing around with the menus and we had a tasting party at our home to try out a few things to see if people would like it,” Griffith said. “It really evolved after that into the idea of flights.

I wanted to do flights of food and then I thought, why not beer and wine also?”

From there ideas started flowing with portions in multiples of threes: sliders with each including a different flavor; crostinis flavored with artichoke chicken, classic tomato basil mozzarella, and filet and blue cheese; and more.

Some of the more popular items on the menu include the macadamia nut crusted shrimp, blue bites, salmon shooters and more.

Michals-Griffith said while there are definite favorites, there is not a single item on their menu that people don’t enjoy.

“We did an inventory and we’re looking where we could pair down and call some of the items, and there just aren’t any unpopular items,” Michals-Griffith said. “We have customers who have a copy of the menu and have crossed off all the items they have tried so far and finishing it is their goal. That is awesome to me.”

Michals-Griffith said they are currently working on a new menu which will be available in August.

When walking into Flightz, not only do you get a warm and welcome feeling, but you are greeted by everyone and served as a true guest.

Something unique about the new restaurant is there are games such as Trouble, Battleship and Monopoly.

“The average person wants to try a little bit of everything. We have had customers come in and just share everything, and to add the fun games, that is our goal,” Griffith said. “It gets people talking, instead of being on their phones. They are enjoying the food and having a good time.”

Not only is Flightz unique in their menu, but with prices to match.

At Flightz, it’s happy hour prices all day long.

“Our prices are moderate; we are really fair,” Griffith said. “In fact, the most comments we’ve gotten are about how the prices are too low.

They might be, but I think they are fair.”

Something distinctive throughout the restaurant is they really focus on promoting local industries. On the beer menu, you’ll notice all the breweries are within a driving distance. This also goes for the wine which can be found east in El Dorado and Amador counties. Some of the furniture is crafted locally, as well as the art work. Michals-Griffith, a university professor, mentioned one of her students designed the restaurants logo.

“Local everything is key for us — local food, local wine, local beer, local artists. We really want to strike a chord with El Dorado Hills and El Dorado County and show that we’re supporting this area in a big way,” Griffith said.

Michals-Griffith said to give their restaurant a try because it isn’t just about the food, but the experience.

“We’re not creating big dinners, but smaller dishes that don’t overwhelm,” Griffith said. “We are not a wine bar that happens to have food but a food bar that happens to have wine and beer.” ✶

Selland’s hosts casual dining with gourmet eats

Since 2012, Selland’s Market-Café has been bringing fresh ingredients and delicious dishes to the El Dorado Hills area, and it still continues to impress.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday – Owner Randall Selland, 62, got into the restaurant business a little Saturday; 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday later in life. “It was a great learning experience and it was great to get a start with them because their original restaurant is cool. Lina was gracious and so nice to me,” Selland said.

He worked there for three to four months and then bounced around from restaurant to restaurant, until he decided to start his own.

With help from their two children, Joshua Nelson and Tamera Baker, they ran a little restaurant. They prepped, set up and served all in the same area.

When they decided to open up with a store front, the first restaurant was The Kitchen; and after, came the first location of Selland’s which ended up on H Street in Sacramento.

“The idea was to do gourmet,” Selland said. “Any restaurant we open is based on places we would like to go eat. We wanted a place that made fresh home foods that you would eat on a normal basis, such as meatloaf, pulled pork, mac and cheese and simple vegetable dishes.”

Selland said Selland’s Market-Café was originally based on having a few seats because they thought people only wanted a few things that they could take home on a nightly basis to eat for dinner. They were a little market that sold organic meat and produce.

“It turned out that people didn’t want to buy raw products to take home, but instead they wanted to sit down and eat. We went from 15 seats to 45,” he said.

Now with three separate locations, people can bring the whole family and enjoy a nice meal in a relaxed atmosphere, he said.

Selland said their menu is made up of fresh dishes such as salads, wood-fired pizza, sandwiches as well as desserts.

While the menu changes with the season, there is always going to be something on the menu that anyone will love.

At Selland’s, it is simple: You order at the counter and it is brought to you when it’s ready.

“We have found over time that people say they won’t come in because they want to be waited on.

That’s just not what Selland’s is about,” Selland said. “You can walk in, the water is free, read the newspaper and then leave an hour later and no one will bother you. When you walk in to a restaurant, there is a host and they seat you. You don’t want to stay if you don’t want to at Selland’s. You can make it however you want it to be.”

Selland said a lot of the time people will ask him what his No. 1 thing is when it comes to his restaurants and he always says hospitality.

“They then say, ‘It should be the food,” but I say, ‘If the people treat you well, the food is just extra,’” he said.

Selland said there are no plans in the works for another Selland’s as they are going to focus on their six current restaurants and make them perfect.

“The idea is to continually make them better and make sure people will want to come back,” he said.

“It’s great that we can make a living doing what we do, and we feel so lucky that people continue to support us. We also want people to be happy and the greatest thing is when people tell you how much they enjoy your restaurants and they can tell you are making an effort, because we really are.” ✶

Melon madness Summer is the perfect time for cool sweets

Watermelon “Steak” Salad

ehydration is very common especially with Auburn experiencing some triple-digit days. It is so important in the summer time to stay hydrated and sometimes you want something a little sweeter than water. Watermelon is an excellent source of hydration during the hottest days of the year and let’s face it all, melons taste very satisfying.

The name steak salad is misleading. The “steak” refers to the shape of the watermelon when it is cut into a delicious and mouth-watering salad perfect for any day in the sun.

Serves 4 1 small seedless watermelon ¼ medium red onion, sliced 1 tsp red wine vinegar 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp raw honey 1 garlic glove, minced ½ tsp pink salt 4 cups assorted mixed greens 1 cup Manchego cheese ¾ cup pepitas To make dressing combine red wine vinegar, olive oil, Dijon mustard, raw honey, and garlic. Combine until mixture is formed.

Slice watermelon into 4 round circles and remove the rind aka “steaks.”

Toss greens in a bowl with sliced onion, Parmesan, salt, pine nuts, and the desired amount of dressing.

Top the watermelon with the dressed greens mix and enjoy!

Five tips to pick the perfect melon 1. Easy on the eyes

Inspect your melon to see if it has any cracks, bruising or soft spots.

2. The duller the better

Especially with watermelon and honeydew, a dull exterior is a sign of a ripe melon. If the skin is shiny, it could indicate it’s under ripe.

3. Heavy is a good thing

If a melon feels heavy for its size, it’s a good sign.

4. Tap it and listen

Tap the melon with the palm of your hand and listen for a hollow sound.

5. Smell, smell, smell

Push your fingers on the spot where the vine used to be attached and the slightly soft spot on the melon should release a fragrance that is very pleasant.

Coconut Honeydew Mint Ice Cream

During the summer I want to consume gallons upon gallons of ice cream. The dissolving dessert is sweet to the taste and instantly cooling. The downside to ice cream in the store is the refined sugar content. This coconut honeydew mint ice cream can be made at home, which means no trip to the store when the craving strikes and uses only the natural sugar from the honeydew and coconut sugar. Sounds like a win-win to me.

Ingredients: Serves 4 2 cans of full fat coconut milk 1 ½ cups honeydew melon, cubed ¼ cup raw coconut sugar 3 tbsp coconut oil 7-10 mint leaves Instructions: Place cans of coconut milk in the fridge overnight in order to separate the solid from the liquid.

After refrigerated, scoop out the solid white part of the coconut milk and discard the clear liquid (or save separately for smoothies later) Add all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Keep blending until the coconut oil is well incorporated.

Place in a bowl and freeze for 4 to 6 hours, stirring every hour. This helps it get super creamy. You can even use a mixer to really aerate the ice cream.

After 4 to 6 hours, scoop out into bowls and enjoy! It will keep for a week or two in an airtight container.

What’s the difference between the seeds?

When we were kids, the myth that eating watermelons seeds would make the tasty fruit grow inside your stomach was a scary thought until it was debunked in older age. Each slice given to you as a kid would then introduce several minutes of picking apart the watermelon until each white and black seed was safely removed before consuming.

Now those pesky seeds are more of a nuisance rather than an outright fear. Turns out the difference between the white and black seeds that freckle the bright pink interior is maturity. In fact all 200-800 of the seeds will start out white before turning black when watermelon is ready for harvesting.

Good news, despite the maturity, the seeds are

indeed perfectly edible. In fact most contain a great deal of the recommended daily protein intake.

On another note, seedless watermelons don’t have seeds because they are considered “sterile hybrids,” a genetically modified melon that doesn’t grow seeds. Some may contain hard seed coats giving the impression of seeds, but if given a closer look the “seeds” are completely empty.

Fresh Cantaloupe Margarita on the Rocks A unique twist to a classic cocktail is the cantaloupe margarita. Have a fiesta and surprise your guests with a seasonal treat they won’t easily forget. Note: best paired with freshmade guacamole and crispy tortilla chips for full fiesta flavor.

Serves 1 2 cups fresh cantaloupe 2 ounces silver tequila 1 ounce triple sec ¾ ounce lime juice Lime wedges for garnish and sea salt for rimming the glass *For a blended beverage simply add ice to desired thickness.

Place cantaloupe in a blender and pulse until smooth. Strain the mixture to remove excess pulp and save the juice.

Place ice, 2 ½ ounces of cantaloupe juice (save the rest for more drinks), tequila, triple sec, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker and shake until cold.

Strain again if desired. Pour into glass and garnish. Sip and enjoy!

To rim glasses, rub a lime wedge on the edge and dip into salt.

Off the Beaten Path Estey Family Vineyards

By Michele Smith | Photos are special to the Entertainer While many visitors to the Amador County wine region are very familiar with the wineries off of the very popular Shenandoah Road, there are some jewels to be found for those who want to take the road less traveled. Estey Family Vineyards is one for example (not to be confused with the popular Etsy website). This beautiful vineyard is located right off of Latrobe Road, right before the major crossing into downtown Plymouth. While the winery is only open on weekends, this is one locale in Plymouth which is a stop on the way in, or out of the Shenandoah wineries.

If you like rustic, this is the wine tasting room for you.

In the middle of the stunning vineyards, there is a barn reminiscent of days past where the wines are poured for wine tasters — wine aficionados and novices, just looking

The quant location may be a little off the tradition Amador path, but a great stop on the way in or out of the main winery trek in Plymouth. It is great to sometimes enjoy little treasures on the road less traveled, and that would be Estey Family Vineyards. Stop by and enjoy a family made wine. for a great view. While the picnic area is small, the winery does host private events, as well as weddings. The vineyard is also family-owned and located on 160 acres of land that has been in the family for 100 years. To anyone who has a distinctive palate, this is beyond impressive. The property was originally known as the Estey Family Ranch with the original owners raising cattle, before the grandson Will Estey, inherited the land. Will Estey started to build homes until the housing market took a turn for the worst and he decided to get into the winemaking business — successfully.

Will Estey turned winemaking into a passion with his family and all his grapes are hand-picked. He would like this legacy to be passed on to his grandchildren.

What does a visitor expect when arriving at the

tasting room on a weekend? For starters, Estey Family Vineyards offers a Zinfandel and Barbara wine, and in addition they offer pomegranate products.

In essence, you can taste and even shop for gifts for family and friends.

This would be homemade jams and juice, that are produced from the family orchards. Yummy.

Weddings are a huge event element at this winery and the best way to schedule a consultation is to call the vineyard direct to plan your ideal vineyard wedding.

A Winery that is worth the drive

In an era where more and more wineries can seem so much the same, it is a pleasure to discover a family-founded and run winery right in our backyard. Amador Cellars, founded in 2000, is a true family endeavor.

Hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily Where: 11093 Shenandoah Road, Plymouth Larry Long, owner and founding winemaker, spent the majority of his Contact: amadorcellars.com career as a hospital administrator and CEO, but, his weekend habit got the best of him, and after years of home winemaking and attending classes at U.C. Davis; he decided that the feeling of going to work in a vineyard and wine cellar was far more enjoyable than that an office, and a daily schedule of meetings.

The owner, having purchased grapes from vineyards in the Shenandoah Valley for years, he and his wife and partner Linda, dragged their three youngsters up and down the roads of Amador County, until they found the perfect piece of land. The land was purchased in 2000, they immediately began planning the future that would become Amador Cellars.

While it seemed crazy at the time, Larry reflects, “I loved the idea of taking grape and making it into wine, then enjoying the fruits of our labor. It was a great adventure for the whole family.”

From the beginning, the Longs were on the cutting edge of green building and sustainability, building the first winery structure with a hay bail and stucco design, that maximized insulation and dramatically reduced the carbon footprint of construction. While looked at as quite eccentric at the time, this design approach is widely used in green building today.

Michael Long, son of Larry and Linda, was only 15 when his folks bought the property and they put him straight to work. Not dissuaded by long days in the sun — digging, planting, pruning, fixing and whatever else needed to be done ­—Michael chose to attend California’s premier winemaking university, California State Fresno, where he graduated at the top of his class. Initially appointed in 2008 as assistant winemaker under the tutelage of his father, his diligence, education and enthusiasm to learn from other winemakers made it clear to the family it was time for Michael to take the reins. In 2013, Michael was appointed head winemaker and has dedicated himself relentlessly to making Amador Cellars one of the finest wineries in California.

While Zinfandel is the classic Amador wine, Michael has expanded the offerings to include Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Touriga, Barbera and even Grenache. The diversity of the wines makes it a perfect onestop cellar to experience the beautiful wines of the region. The result has been a list of medals and awards too long to mention, but, incredibly impressive.

In addition to the beauty of the wines, Amador Cellars now hosts weddings in “The Barn,” a beautiful venue among the vines that is both elegant and rustic.

A true must-see if you are considering a wedding in wine country.

Amador Cellars will be celebrating their 13th anniversary with a day of special tastings, appetizers, and case discounts just in time for the holidays on Nov. 11.

Refreshing summer white wines

With the temperatures rising above 100 degrees during summer, our wine selection moves to cold refreshing white wines. The majority of people will sway to Chardonnay but there are many other choices out there other than Chardonnay.

Sauvignon Blanc, a dry crisp and intensely aromatic variety with a firm streak of acidity. The Marlborough region in New Zealand is renowned for their vibrant gooseberry and exotic fruit flavors.

Riesling, most people would associate this to be a sweet wine. Riesling is credited by many as the world’s best white grape variety. It typically produces a light, fragment wine with lively acidity, gloriously aromatic flavors and relatively low in alcohol levels.

Rieslings come in a range of styles from bone dry and minerally through lusciously sweet and fruity.

Chenin Blanc, similar to Riesling not in flavor but in range from bone dry to sweet.

Flavors of honey, lime and vanilla.

Pinot Gris, a deep colored white grape with subtle flavors of honey smoke and spice.

Styles differ from different regions around the world, from lighter crisper flavors of Italy to richer robust flavors of a Californian Pinot Gris.

Viognier, whilst difficult to pronounce, this grape varietal produces a full-bodied dry wine with aromas of apricot and musk.

Gruner Veltliner, grown predominantly in Austria, but is slowly being introduced and grown in California, produces a full-bodied dry white with a distinctive spicy flavor.

This list can go on and on with many other varietals and white blends that are truly light and refreshing. But I would like to finish of with a lovely white blend from the northern region of Portugal called Vinho Verde. Most Vinho Verde is made from a field blend vineyards interplanted with many different grape varieties.

The wine is dry and slightly fizzy, low in alcohol with high levels of acidity. Making this wine an ideal summer pool wine.

Back in 1966, Brian Wilson stepped away from touring with the Beach Boys, the popular band he co-founded, to focus on writing an album that became “Pet Sounds.” The album that continues to challenge today’s musical leaders has been the talk of the music nation as its 50th anniversary tour has been selling out across the nation over the past 11 months.

On Aug. 26, Wilson will perform beneath the stars at Thunder Valley Casino Resort’s Amphitheater with a special added show to his extensive tour. Wilson will be joined on the ticket by Felix Cavalier’s Rascals with their own special performance.

When Wilson created “Pet Sounds,” he took the Beach Boys fun-in-the-sun sound to a different place where well-matched lyrics joined with deep melodies. Today, it remains second on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums ever made, second to the Beatles’ “Sargent Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club.”

“I never imagined it would have the impact it has had and continues to have,” Wilson said. “I knew at the time it was special to me and now it is special to so many people I meet 50 years later.

I didn’t think we would be performing it live 50 years later, let alone to sold-out venues around the world.”

Wilson wrote and co-wrote more than two dozen top-40 hits for the Beach Boys in his career.

He is known as one of the most innovative and influential creative forces in popular music by critics and musicians alike. His works continue to be enjoyed by generations, something that is very special to him today.

“As I travel around the world, I see so many young people singing the words to these songs and it makes me feels so good,” he said. “Sometimes they know the words without speaking English and that just blows me away.”

Wilson is joined on tour by a cast of true musical talent. Among them is Blondie Chaplin, a former Beach Boy who played with the band as well as the Rolling Stones. Alongside Chaplin, you’ll find guitarist Al Jardine. To Wilson, Jardine has been his right hand since the start.

“Al Jardine is like my shadow on stage,” he said. “He and I go way back to our beginning. I love his presence and he is such a great singer. It’s a thrill to have him next to me on stage.”

Jardine feels much the same about Wilson. The 73-year-old wingman credits the duo’s great chemistry on stage to years of experience together. Most importantly, the two are enjoying every minute of it.

“He (Wilson) is an amazing writer and performer. You never know what to expect from him and that’s what makes it so fun,” said Jardine. “He has this very natural sense of humor you won’t see on the outside.”

Much like Wilson, Jardine too is amazed at the generational popularity of their music. When it comes to “Pet Sounds,” he explained how the album was simply a work for the future. From “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” to “God Only Knows” and

everything in between, this album and all of their hits have stood the test of time.

“This is the time where we are truly enjoying the rewards of all of our hard work. I never imagined we would still be doing this live 50 years later and to have the huge catalog of music we have to do 40 or 50 songs a night and still make our shows different.”

Jardine is blessed in another fashion. His son, Matt Jardine, is now a member of the band and touring with them. The second-generation rocker is dead on when it comes to the vocals for Wilson’s California sound and has inherited the musical talents of his father in a masterful way.

“These musicians are amazing, all of them,” he said. “To be able to play these songs on stage with all of them and Matt, it’s truly a blessing. All of them are really celebrating our music and strive for perfection.”

Every performance closes with his ballad, “Love and Mercy.” The song gained popularity after the movie, with the same title about Wilson’s fame and troubled early life hit the big screen two years ago.

“As I travel around, I always tell young people to stay away from drugs and treat people kindly, with love,” said Wilson. “‘Love and Mercy’ sends that message well which is why I chose to close every show with it. I want to send them home with something that makes them feel good and feel loved, hopeful.” ❖ August 2017 | 51

would go on to be one of the most successful bands of the decade.

The Folsom Entertainer chatted with guitarist and backup singer, Scotty “Scott” Johnson about their landmark album, new material and their plans for the Harris Center.

We’re glad you’re coming to Folsom I love Folsom! We played there before. I remember because we played “Folsom Prison Blues.”

We thought maybe we shouldn’t do it, but the crowd loved it. We said after the show “every band must play it” and they said, “No, nobody ever does!”

What was the Music scene like back in the late ‘80s?

I remember there was a band called the Jetsons and there were people lined up, kids lined up the block and they played their own music. I mean I was shocked I couldn’t believe it and that’s kind of when things changed for me. ... Not only did I decide to go into rock but you have to make a conscious decision like, “I’m going to write songs” or “I’m going to play with other songwriters and we’re going to do our own material,” you know. I mean you have to make that commitment. ... Tempe was small back then, it was more a college town, it was really tiny. There were only a couple of bars that we could play at, so that becomes part of it. You hang out at those places with all the musicians and so it was it very cool, nurturing. We got a chance to get on stage and

basically learned how to be songwriters and performers at these little tiny clubs on Mill Avenue, and then I think that sound came from, you know, we were really close to Southern California. We were influenced by that kind of Southern California thing that was happening in the 70s Gram Parsons and the Eagles, of course. Yeah, we’re more jangly guitar and we like twang more and we love harmonies, Jesse and Robin are great together. I think that whole sort of Southern California country rock influenced us a lot.

How has the band changed and evolved since ‘New Miserable?’

Well. No, (Scotty now chuckling) to be honest with you I don’t know if we’ve changed. You know, I know a lot of bands do that like make a country record, a rock record and then they’ll make a reggae record. We kind of stayed and we kind of stick with what we’re good at — sometimes we’ll try different grooves when we’re writing.

In a band what is the creative process like in a group dynamic?

You know one of the guys will

say, “Yeah, let’s try this, I want this to rock more” or “I want this kind of feel,” so there will be some direction but it is definitely different in a band situation.

There’s a lot of trial and error, it is organic but you demo, you listen, you rehearse. We’ll try different tempos, different keys — finding the right keys is, you know, you’ve got to work at it. We’ll go through 30, 40 songs before we get down to, OK, we’re going to record these 15 and then even after recording. You just slowly start with a big pile of songs and we dig through and see what fits and what the guys like. For us it’s a long process of going through and work. It’s more work than people might realize.

The new album is being produced by Don Dixon and Mitch Easter, who produced R.E.M.’s classic “Murmur” album. What are they bringing to this album? Does it influence your sound?

Man, it’s a big influence because you know our producer (John Hanson) passed away. It just seemed to fit but yet, they just definitely have their style, they put their thumb print it on

it for sure and that’s what you want. ... The sound, the sound, how they record you, it’s definitely — those two have a thing — it’s a definite thing and John Hanson had his thing. Rarely do the producers ever say switch that up or something but just as far as their sound and how it’s recorded and how it turns out, it’s definitely all them.

What have you guys got planned for the Harris Center?

We’re going to rock it out man.

We’re a band that likes to have fun with the audience.

There’s an expression that the audience plays the band and you know we like to say “hi” to people and “Here, play the tambourine for a minute.”
