“I

wonder how many people go through life when they have a talent and they don’t know they can do it and they never have the opportunity,” artist Douglas Van Howd said.

The local Auburn artist started playing with a paintbrush from a very young age, but his journey to becoming a sculptor held a series of unforeseen opportunities.

“I didn’t choose to be a sculptor, that sort of happened,” he said.

In the early 1970s Van Howd was approached by the president of the Mzuri foundation to design and build small sculptures of a lion to present to their speakers and outgoing presidents. (“Mzuri” in Swahili means good.) It was an endeavor never attempted by Van Howd, but the president’s response was that it was too late to have another board meeting and find another artist so it was up to Van Howd to figure it out.

“I found to my surprise that I could do it. When I paint I can’t even have the phone ring, when I was doing the sculpture I was watching a football game and talking to people. So it just came together really easy,” he said.

The people wanted more. Since his first lion was so popular, he decided the next would be a group of lions and sold all 13 of them with a waiting list for more.

“That’s was started me,” Van Howd said. “It’s been a real blessing for me. It has taken me a lot of places. I became a White House artist because of it.”

Governor Reagan was a name on the list of recipients presented with one of the lions. The introduction led to commissioned White House pieces when Reagan became president.

“All because of that one piece,” he said. “It’s amazing how things work in life. I was very fortunate.”

Van Howd’s artwork is all made of bronze and inspired by the outdoors and African wildlife.

“I really love to do the African wildlife,” Van Howd said.

Being an outdoorsman was instilled in him at a young age from his father who was a serious bow hunter. Most of his childhood was spent in Nevada and Tahoe until a heavy snow year moved their family to Southern California and closer to his grandmother.

“He’s been an outdoorsman ever since I have known him and that’s kind of what we had in common too; we both love the outdoors,” Van Howd’s wife Nancy said.

The two met at ages 14 and 18 and were married six years later. Nancy is a wildlife photographer making the two are an artistic duo.

FUN FACTS • The sculpture “Three Kings” at Cabela’s in Reno stands at a shocking 30 feet high. Van Howd had to create the masterpiece horizontally and hope that it all worked together when put together vertically on site.

• One of the largest pieces Van Howd has done is the “Dueling Dinosaurs” commissioned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History.

• The sculptures at U.C. Berkeley and the University of Nevada Reno were also done by Douglas Van Howd.

• Van Howd just finished an 8-foot Texas Ranger for a new hotel in Austin, Texas.

• Van Howd was commissioned to do the Ronald Reagan sculpture at the Capitol in Sacramento. A second one was cast that is now in the Reagan Library.

• Barron Hilton asked Van Howd to create a monument in front of his hotel in Reno. The Pony Express tribute is named “Special Delivery” and depicts the news of President Abraham Lincoln’s election.

While Van Howd still loves to paint, he had been very busy in the foundry and keeping sculpting projects going.

Some monuments are life-and-a-quarter size and can take over a year to complete.

“I don’t have a favorite piece per say, but there are pieces that have meaning to them,” Van Howd said. “Whatever I am working on, I enjoy it. It is mostly the meaning of what took place with the piece.”

Van Howd recalls fondly the three weeks he spent in Africa studying and following Ahmed, one of the largest elephants of all time measuring at 13 feet high at the shoulders with tusks extending 10 and a half feet long.

During the trek, Ahmed traveled 30 miles in one day and Van Howd just couldn’t keep up. When they found him again they were protected by a moat around the village that was four feet wide and four feet deep.

“I knew he couldn’t cross but I wasn’t really sure,” Van Howd said.

They both held their ground as Van Howd stared straight up at the majestic creature. Ahmed grabbed a trunk full of dirt and threw at him. While there is much more to that interaction, it became a well-known tale.

“That story spread,” he said. “I’ve always remembered that.”

Eventually, Van Howd and the natives assisting him lost track of Ahmed.

“He got tired of us,” he said.

Van Howd has had many experiences that most could never fathom. Many were dangerous such as near attacks from African wildlife, while his work has brought him faceto-face with political and celebrity greats. His adventures have taken him around the world, but his home is nestled here, in the Foothills.

• The painting of Jesus’ feet being anointed by Mary, whose bother was Lazarus, was inspired by a vision Van Howd had.

• Van Howd’s next trip to Africa will be his 50th and Nancy, his wife, has just gone for her 25th time.

• The statue of Bud Anderson at the Auburn Airport is a creation of Douglas Van Howd.

• The clay Van Howd uses to cast is his own mixture of raw clay he collects from Ione and other materials. He makes 2,000 pounds at one time.

• His sculpture “Friends of Freedom” is an Indian with an eagle and spent many years in the Roosevelt Room of the White House. It took almost a year to make and there are 150 feathers on the eagle.

• Bing Crosby was the first recipient of “anything I ever did,” Van Howd said.

Relay For Life

CANCER NEVER SLEEPS

elay For Life is the top fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. During the event, team members take turns walking around a track or designated path for six-to-24 hours. Each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. The idea is that cancer patients don’t stop because they’re tired, and for one night, neither do the teams of Relay For Life.

Shari Smith is the survivor and caregiver lead chair for Relay For Life and a Foresthill resident. She has been involved with Relay for Life for 14 years. “I started shortly after I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer,” said Smith. “The most inspiring moment each year is when the luminaries are all lit up, with all the loved ones names from the past and present. We all listen to the music of the bagpipe play as we silently take a lap in honor of the many who have battled cancer.”

This year, Smith said she is looking forward to the laughter and tears she will share with the new people she’ll meet at the relay. “For each lap I take this year, I will be honoring 12

a loved one from the past and present who has battled cancer,” she said.

The relay is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities and 27 countries.

Donations to Relay For Life help the American Cancer Society fund cancer research, critical patient care services and education and prevention initiatives.

In Auburn, the relay is scheduled to begin with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m., Aug. 19. at Gold Country Fairgrounds.

The relay will begin with a survivors lap, followed by a caregivers lap, luminaria ceremony and closing ceremony.

“I encourage everyone to come out to the event,” said Smith.

“It’s free, family fun; come see what Relay For Life is all about.”

HISTORY OF RELAY FOR LIFE In May 1985, Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising money to help the American Cancer Society with the nation’s biggest health concern: cancer.

Gordy spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at the University of Puget Sound. Friends, family and patients watched and supported him as he walked and ran more than 83.6 miles and raised $27,000 through pledges to help save lives from cancer. As he circled the track, he thought of how he could get others to take part. He envisioned having teams participate in a 24-hour fundraising event. The next year, 19 teams were part of the first Relay at the historical Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000.

Gordy passed away Aug. 3, 2014, at the age of 71 from heart failure after battling stomach cancer. But his legacy lives on. He helped shape an idea that started as one man walking and running a track and helped turn it into a global event raising more than $5 billion to help save lives throughout the world.

feel that young people in agriculture are the future of agriculture, and without agriculture we wouldn’t be anywhere,” FFA participant Jessica Hobbs said. “Agriculture is everything you see around you.”

Both Jessica Hobbs and Delaney Hard are preparing turkeys for the fair this year, Hobbs through FFA and Hard though Gold Country 4-H. While the two are raising the same broad breasted white turkey breed, both Hobbs and Hard have similarities and differences in their process to get to fair.

“Broad-breasted are what you think of when you think turkey,” Hard said.

The genetically modified bird is designed to grow bigger breasts faster than other breeds making them ideal to raise for the fair.

For Delaney Hard, raising turkeys came naturally. Her family’s farm already raises heritage turkeys and it seemed like a no-brainer when choosing another 4-H project. She has been in 4-H for nine years and turkeys helped her get her feet wet with ag. Hard plans on forming her career around agriculture whether as a zoologist or possibly a horse breeder.

Jessica Hobbs is entering her senior year of high school and plans on staying in FFA until she ages out. She is currently training her third guide dog, Justine, for her SAE (supervised agriculture experience) through FFA and is the only student raising them at Placer High School. Her sister told her that ag science was easier and she ended up falling in-love with the study.

She started raising turkeys and guide dogs at the same time and is also her chapter’s reporter.

The journey to fair can be a bit overwhelming for anyone preparing to show. Once they received their birds the work immediately begins. Both girls are currently raising five turkeys, a balance of male and female, and will select the prime two to show at the Gold Country Fair. Every fair has different rules on how many birds you can bring. It can be two to three depending on the Auburn fair, Hobbs said.

“Five is kind of a lucky number because you have more to choose from,” Hard said.

The animals need to be walked in order to develop their muscles and it needs to be fed a healthy diet.

Hard enjoys walking the birds to blackberry bushes. The turkeys enjoy the snack and their beaks turn purple as though they were wearing lipstick, Hard said.

Training the birds for the fair is no easy task.

In order to show them, the turkeys are held from their feet, upside-down.

“The hard part about showing is flipping the birds,” Hard said.

Prepping the birds for the fair can be a long ordeal with weigh-in and health inspections.

“Turkeys are one of the easiest projects, if you can keep them alive,” Hobbs said.

Where the birds are raised is important.

Turkeys do not have a reputation of being the most intelligent creatures and do require safe enclosures and constant monitoring. They have a shorter life span and are designed to eat to the point of where their bodies can’t support life anymore.

“I don’t get attached to the turkeys,” Hobbs said.

Certain birds are easy to get attached to, some can have great personalities and some are easier to say goodbye to, said Hard.

Both girls recognize that the animals are being raised for a purpose other than companionship.

However, Hard does like to name her birds.

Supporting the kids who work so hard to raise an animal for fair is a great way for the community to show local support for the youth that is helping to keep agriculture alive and thriving.

Walk up the hill to the livestock area where junior exhibitors have their project animals.

The still exhibits are a wonderful showcase of local talent and the categories are very interesting.

Photography almost fills up the Armory building along with beautiful quilts, crafts, fireplace mantel displays, baked goods and canning.

The Sierra building is home to the Agricultural displays. There is some serious competition in there among the feature booth entries, the scarecrow competition, the best eggs, the tallest weed or largest gourd and the fruit and vegetable judging.

DOES MY CHILD NEED A TUTOR?

chool is nearly back in session. That means backpacks and books are beginning to flood homes and the halls of schools that start early. When it comes to education, it can be hard to determine whether a tutor is advantageous for your student and which one is best suited for your child’s specific needs. After speaking to several tutors in the Auburn and Roseville areas, the insights they put forth brought clarity to the subject of tutoring.

The first and hardest step when it comes to tutoring is determining when a tutor is needed.

For parents this can be especially challenging.

The need for a tutor is flagged when a child receives poor grades and exudes signs of frustration and/or a lack of confidence with studies.

When their attitude about learning goes south, tutoring services are recommended, said Ana Edwards of The Tutoring Center in Auburn.

“One of the most recognizable signs of danger our instructors look for is finger counting to add, which shows a lack of number sense,” Sara Nylin of Mathnasium of Roseville said.

“Obviously if a student shows interest in a topic, it would be in their best interest to support that and do whatever it takes to help them pursue and develop that interest but more importantly when a student starts to avoid doing their homework or making excuses for why they might not being doing so well, that should alert the parents that the student is struggling and they need help. Ninety percent of students will not admit to themselves that they need help, let alone tell their parents or teachers. Let’s face it, nobody likes the feeling that they’re not good at something or being told they’re not ‘smart,’” Anthony Reyes of Mathnasium of Roseville said.

To Reyes’ point, tutoring can be beneficial for both a child falling behind academically and one who shows a drive to excel.

“We can push them and they can advance beyond their grade level,” Edwards said.

Math is the No. 1 taught subject for tutors, followed close behind by reading comprehension and writing. However, each student differs, which is why the assessments that tutoring centers offer are so important.

“There is no one size fits most when it comes to math,” Nylin said.

“It’s no longer just black and white.

You have to read between the lines,” Edwards said.

When asked about changes in learning, interviewed tutors agreed Common Core is the biggest change as of late. Adopted in schools, Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy. These learning goals set forth what a student should know at the end of each school year. This newest structure of education has been a struggle with most parents and has caused confusion when helping their kids with learning, making tutors invaluable.

“When the schools changed to Common Core Math, we had an influx of students because the new curriculum was so different and many people were not prepared for it,” Nyiln said. “Also we’ve found that students with online-based homework versus traditional pencil and paper homework don’t retain as much knowledge between topics. There’s something about putting pencil

to paper that really helps solidify what the student has learned.”

“I definitely think Common Core has been a hiccup in our education system,” Edwards said.

The good news is that even with all the changes and new systems being implemented, tutoring can aid students in getting their grade levels back up or higher in really a short period of time. There are even some statistics that show improvement of one grade level every six months, Edwards said.

It is never too early to prepare kids for success in the years of learning ahead of them.

Some have started as early as kindergarten.

Tutoring can be as simple as a few additional hours a week during the school year and breaks to keep students feeling focused and confident in their academic abilities.

Hidden Falls Regional Park

This location is ideal for those who like to hike a ways before sitting down to picnic. While any of the several benches and around 30 miles of trails would make up a great lunch spot, the most popular destination would have to be the deck that overlooks the majestic waterfalls.

Be sure to come prepared with proper hiking shoes and a water bottle. There are no barbecues or open flames allowed, but that doesn’t mean a good sandwich and some sides aren’t the perfect pairing for a hike and a picnic.

The trails are also open for cyclists and equestrians, so be prepared to share.

It is also the responsibility of the hiker to pack out what is packed in. Be courteous and enjoy incredible views with your picnic this summer. Parking is free, but it is a good idea to get there early, because once it fills up cars will be turned away. The park opens a half hour before sunrise.

Bicentennial Park

An oasis in the middle of town is what the Bicentennial Park represents. It is what some may call a “pocket park” and is owned by the City of Auburn and maintained by Auburn Recreation District. It is directly across the street from the Auburn Courthouse and the farmers’ market making it the perfect lunch spot for a picnic after picking up a few tasty things at the market. This park is ideal for a more intimate picnic as the park is smaller and has only a few benches. The park features a paved trail that leads across a quaint bridge, under the overpass and partially up a hill. The sanctuary is ideal for a romantic afternoon in a secluded little getaway only walking distance from Old Town.

Garden goodies FEW FARMERS GROW MELONS TO SELL

id-July at the farmers market and it’s hopping as summer fruits and vegetables near their peak.

At the Pilz Produce stand, grower Lisa Pilz is weighing selections, answering questions and helping customers bag their purchases.

She’s one of a handful of growers who include melons in their array of garden goodies at Placer County’s Foothill Farmers Market.

The melon season is a little behind schedule because of all the rain.

“We are about a month later than we’d normally have them,” she said.

On this day, the 10 ripe Tuscan melons she brought were gone within the first couple of hours.

“People are craving the local farm melons,” Pilz said.

Steve and Lisa Pilz grow a variety of produce on their 34acre farm in Penryn. They have 20 acres n production. The land has been in the family since Steve Pilz’s grandfather, Edmund Pilz, settled there in 1927.

“We sell mostly at the farmers market (Auburn and Fountains in Roseville),” Lisa said. “In winter we sell mandarins at a farm stand by appointment only.”

There are also some commercial accounts.

The melon crop is mainly the soft-skin varieties. But there will also be a few of the orange-flesh variety of watermelon later in the season.

The Tuscan cantaloupe (ripens) first. Then we’ll have Crenshaw, honeydew, Canary and San Juan,” she said. “In the fall we’ll have Casaba and St. Nick.”

Crenshaw is a large, very sweet melon with light orange flesh.

“It has a lighter outer skin that doesn’t sunburn as much as the melons with darker skin,” Pilz said.

The honeydew is the green-flesh variety.

“In the past, we’ve tried the ones in other colors, but we found that people prefer the traditional one,” she said.

Honeydews ripen a little later and Pilz expects to have some ready for market by early August.

Canary melon is one of her favorites.

“It is a white-flesh, crispy melon with really good perfume and a really nice flavor,” she said. “It is a strong melon versus the milder Crenshaw. They are similar to cantaloupe and have a beautiful yellow rind.”

The San Juan is a white-flesh fruit with a tropical flavor.

“We used to grow Galia, but we had too much trouble with it cracking in the heat. So the San Juan is a replace-

ment,” she said. “It has a similar texture to cantaloupe with a very nice flavor and perfume.”

The St. Nick melons won’t be ready for harvest until midto-late September.

“They require some cold to develop the flavor,” Pilz said.

“After we pick them, we put them in the cooler and they sweeten up in the cooling process. The starches turn to sugar. They are kind of football-shaped with green and yellow speckles. They store really well.”

Knowing when to harvest melons is a green-thumb gift — and an important one. Once melons are picked, they do not ripen further, although the sugars will increase a little more.

“We try not to pick them until they are ripe,” Pilz said.

“Harvesting depends on the kind of melon. For example San Juan and cantaloupe are pulled from the vine. If they don’t release easily, they aren’t ready.”

For honeydew, Crenshaw and Canary, Pilz test them for ripeness on their blossom end.

“We look for color change,” she said.

For watermelons, the farmers look for the “curlicue” on the stem, she explained.

“The curlicue should be dry and the sound of the melon when you knock on it should be a hollow ring. Like knocking on a door,” she said. “It also should have a yellow belly where it rested on the ground. Sweeter melons in certain varieties will have stitching like they have been scarred by bees. That is sugar coming through the skin and that seems to be a sweeter melon.”

The yellow color of the belly can vary from a pale butter to nearly mustard depending in the variety.

“You just don’t want it to be white,” she said.

Once you make your melon purchase, it should keep for about five days on the counter and a little longer in the fridge.

If you are growing your own, keep in mind they require a lot of water, a lot of sun and a lot of compost.

“Know your variety and when (the instructions) say it will be ready from when you planted it in the ground,” she said.

“Start checking it about five to 10 days before that.”

Some good ways to enjoy melon?

One of Pilz’s favorites is to cut the melon in half, remove the seeds and add a scoop or two of cottage cheese.

“Or use berries or other things,” she said. “I’ve also read some melon sorbet recipes that look amazing.”

For a refreshing salad, she suggests combining sliced melon and heirloom tomatoes with feta cheese and mint. Add some balsamic vinegar to bring out the flavors even more.

Melon madness SUMMER IS THE PERFECT TIME FOR COOL SWEETS WATERMELON “STEAK” SALAD

ehydration is very common especially with Auburn experiencing some triple-digit days. It is so important in the summer time to stay hydrated and sometimes you want something a little sweeter than water.

Watermelon is an excellent source of hydration during the hottest days of the year and let’s face it all, melons taste very satisfying. The name steak salad is misleading. The “steak” refers to the shape of the watermelon when it is cut into a delicious and mouth-watering salad perfect for any day in the sun.

Serves 4 INGREDIENTS

1 small seedless watermelon ¼ medium red onion, sliced 1 tsp red wine vinegar 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp raw honey 1 garlic glove, minced ½ tsp pink salt 4 cups assorted mixed greens 1 cup Manchego cheese ¾ cup pepitas INSTRUCTIONS

1. To make dressing combine red wine vinegar, olive oil, Dijon mustard, raw honey, and garlic. Combine until mixture is formed.

2. Slice watermelon into 4 round circles and remove the rind aka “steaks.”

3. Toss greens in a bowl with sliced onion, Parmesan, salt, pine nuts, and the desired amount of dressing.

4. Top the watermelon with the dressed greens mix and enjoy!

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SEEDS? When we were kids, the myth that eating watermelons seeds would make the tasty fruit grow inside your stomach was a scary thought until it was debunked in older age. Each slice given to you as a kid would then introduce several minutes of picking apart the watermelon until each white and black seed was safely removed before consuming.

Now those pesky seeds are more of a nuisance rather than an outright fear. Turns out the difference between the white and black seeds that freckle the bright pink interior is maturity. In fact all 200-800 of the seeds will start out white before turning black when watermelon is ready for harvesting.

Good news, despite the maturity, the seeds are indeed perfectly edible. In fact most contain a great deal of the recommended daily protein intake.

On another note, seedless watermelons don’t have seeds because they are considered “sterile hybrids,” a genetically modified melon that doesn’t grow seeds. Some may contain hard seed coats giving the impression of seeds, but if given a closer look the “seeds” are completely empty.

FIVE TIPS TO PICK THE PERFECT MELON 1. Easy on the eyes Inspect your melon to see if it has any cracks, bruising or soft spots.

2. The duller the better Especially with watermelon and honeydew, a dull exterior is a sign of a ripe melon. If the skin is shiny, it could indicate it’s under ripe.

3. Heavy is a good thing If a melon feels heavy for its size, it’s a good sign.

4. Tap it and listen Tap the melon with the palm of your hand and listen for a hollow sound.

5. Smell, smell, smell Push your fingers on the spot where the vine used to be attached and the slightly soft spot on the melon should release a fragrance that is very pleasant.

INSTRUCTIONS

INGREDIENTS

1. Place cantaloupe in a blender and pulse until smooth. Strain the mixture to remove excess pulp and save the juice.

2. Place ice, 2 ½ ounces of cantaloupe juice (save the rest for more drinks), tequila, triple sec, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker and shake until cold.

3. Strain again if desired. Pour into glass and garnish. Sip and enjoy!

4. To rim glasses, rub a lime wedge on the edge and dip into salt.

Horses star in Draft Horse Classic

M

ajestic Draft Horse performances, breathtaking competitions, and seeing a Draft Horse “up-close” are all part of the festivities at the 31st Annual Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair. Featuring six different performances by the Draft Horses, this event has become the premier Draft Horse show in the western United States. The Classic spotlights a variety of horses, teams, and performances; featuring everything from farm wagons, carriages, and driving competitions to dancing horses and racing mules. The stars of the show are the horses, and with more than 120 horses stabled on the grounds, the Classic offers a unique chance to observe them in a multitude of settings.

In between the performance classes, enjoy showcase specialty acts like Gladius the Show, an acrobatic equestrian production that incorporates aerialists, fire and Roman riding. There’s also the California Cowgirls, chariot and chuck wagon races and the Bobby Kerr Mustang Act. Also taking place at the Fairgrounds during the four days of the Classic is the Harvest Fair.

Although there is a charge for the Draft Horse

performances in the arena, admission to the Harvest Fair is free so all can enjoy the many activities of the Harvest Fair on the Fairgrounds.

Visit the grounds to enjoy musical entertainment, a Western Trade Show with vendors selling wares, the Harvest Fair agricultural competitions and community exhibits, a horseshoeing demonstration, and Art at the Classic. Plus, you don’t want to miss the opportunity to visit the barns and meet the famous Draft Horses. You can even sign up for a guided barn tour.

When you’re hungry and need a rest, pick your favorite treat, then wander over to the Pine Tree Stage and enjoy the musical entertainment. New this year at the Harvest Fair, we’ve got two new musical acts performing on the Pine Tree Stage.

From 4:30–6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash takes the stage. From 4–6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, Left of Centre and the Country Artists Tribute to Jason Aldean will be featured. Alternative Investments

W

hat is an alternative investment? This term simply refers to an investment or asset that isn’t your normal stock, bond or mutual fund. When I say alternative investment, most people think of real estate or hedge funds. This month, let’s talk about the pros and cons of some alternative investments.

Gold (or other precious metals) This is a very hot topic with a lot of my clients right now.

People seem to either love precious metals and allocate way too much of their portfolio to it, or don’t want anything to do with it. Very rarely do I see someone who has a reasonable allocation to a precious metal.

The pros are precious metals don’t always move in alignment with the rest of the market. This makes it a great tool to diversify and mitigate some market risk. Within a certain limited period, precious metals have earned a decent rate of return.

The cons? It is a tangible asset that isn’t as readily tradable like a stock is. You must find a buyer and agree on a price if you want to sell the asset. It can also be very volatile.

Real estate You have probably read or heard that everybody makes loads of money in real estate and some lofty statistic that correlates millionaires to investing in real estate. The pros of real estate are the tax advantages, the cash-flow opportunities and potential appreciation. The disadvantages are, similarly to precious metals, it isn’t as readily converted to cash.

It takes time to make real estate transactions, often include an agent that can add fees, there are expenses involved in owning real estate, and it takes constant management.

The last one is the issue I have in recommending real estate to my clients. The commercials on TV and fliers in the mail advertise claims of double-digit returns while you 42

sleep. Historically, cash flow has been the greatest opportunity for wealth building with real estate, not appreciation on its own. There is management, upkeep, repairs, replacements, finding tenants and such involved. To do it yourself is stressful. To hire out help eats into the returns.

Real estate can be a good fit for investors who like to play a more active role in their portfolio. I just like to make sure their expectations are in alignment with the most likely reality.

Art This is probably the least liquid of the three alternative investments we have discussed. Art takes careful due diligence as the valuations and market size is much smaller than precious metals and real estate. As a result, I have only seen art acquired for lifestyle reasons more than investment reasons. If you enjoy art and it is something you want to invest in, consider working with an expert or two in the industry and don’t take shortcuts in researching before making acquisitions.

Your greatest risk is probably overpaying followed by not being able to resell it at the valuation price. The risk of losing money due to actual lost value of the piece of art is smaller than those first two risks in my opinion.

If you have interest in alternative investments, but don’t have any experience yet, consider researching ETFs, or exchange traded funds. There are ETFs that invest in commodities, in precious metal-related companies, in real estate and more. That is one way to gain exposure in your portfolio and some experience before committing to holding the physical assets.
