T

he first thing you notice when you walk into Brass Tap in Rocklin is the diversity of the crowd. There are families here. There are also elderly couples, college kids, and after-work solo drinkers.

The next thing you notice is the row of tap handles stretching the full length of the bar. All 48 of them, in constant rotation.

The rest of the details fall into place: The brewery equipment in the back; the fridge stocked with up to 120 different bottles of beer, cider, and nonalcoholic drinks; the happy hour menu featuring such popular fare as pretzel pieces with regular and jalapeno beer cheese.

If the feeling you get when you walk in is something along the lines of, “this place has everything,” then owner Ed Fralick has done his job.

“Our goal every day is to make sure everybody has the best time,” he said.

“You can always come in and find something you like.”

Indeed, Brass Tap’s inclusivity is so broad as to be near mythical, and its appeal is a study in paradox: A franchise that feels like a small-town hangout; a

brewery that feels like a pub; a restaurant that feels like a taproom. Every nuance contributes to its charm without ever devolving into kitsch or detracting from the customer experience.

“We’re in between an industrial brewery and a full-blown restaurant,” Fralick said. “Everybody finds a place they belong here.”

That sense of belonging is the driving philosophy behind Brass Tap, a national franchise of 42 stores, all of which are family owned and operated. Brass Tap in Rocklin is no exception.

“Not an hour goes by that a member of the family isn’t working here,” Fralick said.

Piper Hightower is one such example.

She divides her time at Brass Tap between marketing and brewing, both equally designed to share the joy of communal drinking.

“I’ve fallen in love with the way beer brings people together,” she said.

“There’s a reason characters drink beer in Shakespeare. It’s a catalyst for being together.”

Her job and passion is to share that catalyst, whether through marketing campaigns or her Brass Tap Blonde that is currently on tap.

“We’ve got a lot of dreams that we want to see happen,” she said.

One such dream that will be coming to fruition this fall is the home brewer’s competition. In partnership with Brew Master, a home brew specialty shop, Brass Tap will invite local brewers to make and submit their beer of choice.

The top two winners will be featured on tap for all to enjoy.

“So many people have such amazing creativity around craft beer,” Hightower said. “We get the chance to spotlight that creativity.”

The brew competition is just one of many examples consistent with their business philosophy: The customer always wins.

“If you take care of your customer, they’ll come back,” Fralick said. “When people walk out of here, they feel well taken care of.”

Laura Paz is one customer who will definitely be coming back.

“I just moved here and I’m trying to find good places to go,” she said. “This place is amazing.”

Her friends Michaela Thomas and Keana Johnson agree.

“I don’t even like beer,” Thomas said with a laugh, raising her Nectar Creek taster aloft. “This is the best beer I’ve ever had.”

S

ummer is far from over if Wake Island Waterpark has anything to say about it. Noel Carter and his wife Rain have created something not very commonly seen in California. The two have developed the largest cable park in the nation spanning more than 80 acres with four lakes.

“It was a property that had gone bankrupt. They were catfish farming,” owner Noel Carter said. “The idea was to grow into it (the property).”

This summer is the fifth season since they have opened and the fun only continues to spread with cables for wakeboarding, an obstacle course, a new zip line and more.

While many waterparks are catered to youth alone, Wake Island can be

described as more of an adventure park meets resort with actual sandy beaches.

“It really is a day at the beach,” Carter said.

Carter wasn’t one for lake days as a kid. In fact his experience wakeboarding was less than thrilling. Carter grew up in Grass Valley/Nevada City and attended college at San Luis Obispo where he enrolled in an exchange program to Asia.

There he ended up launching a career and staying for 10 years.

While in Asia, a friend of his reluctantly dragged him to a cable park.

His prior experience wakeboarding left him less than enthusiastic about going, but he quickly changed his mind.

“Within three days I was hooked for life,” Carter said.

So much so that when he settled in Roseville, Carter made his livelihood around the uncommon waterpark concept and created Wake Island.

Before opening the aqua portion of the park, Carter went back to Asia per a friend’s request to check out an obstacle course over there. Once again he was reluctant and assumed that the activity would be childish.

“It took me one minute to go ‘this is awesome,’” he said. “It really gets that inner child within you giggling and laughing.”

After finding the property, it was perfect.

It had been abandoned for two years.

The lakes were already there and just needed some additional maintenance in preparation for Wake Island. The Carters repurposed what was just sitting there. “(We) didn’t want it to be a sore on the county,” he said.

The four lakes were drained and maintenance on the shores conducted.

They are indeed lakes and not pools, which mean the well-fed waters, contain fish and are not chlorinated. They use aerators in the lakes to avoid stagnation.

Wakeboarding and the obstacle course are not the only activities to indulge in.

Anything from paddle boarding, to zip lining, to enjoying the swimming beach and more is offered for a perfect day in the sun for any age. Bring anything a normal beach day would require; only no outside food or drink is allowed. The Beach Hut Deli and Island Grill provide all the necessities when it comes to hunger and hydration.

It takes a lot of equipment to enjoy water sports, but not at Wake Island, Carter said. Imagine a world without ski resorts; it would be far too difficult and expensive to enjoy the slopes with out lifts, lodges and runs. Similarly with water sports, boats, gear and transportation can be expensive. Wakeboarding tickets at Wake Island range from $29 to $49. Thus, the cable park is a less expensive way to enjoy a well-loved water activity. Wake Island is the ski resort of waterparks.

“The more people that are out there, the more fun you’re going to have,” Carter said. “You’re having 10 times more fun with 100 people out there.” 

Invester-preneur Mark Haney knows how to get your small business to the next level.

BIG BUCKS: Mark Haney has a catch phrase for his show, “Are you hangin’ or bangin’?” His premise is those who are “hangin’” are taking a rest such as being in recharge mode.

But “bangin’” is when someone is doing their very best at the very best opportunity.

ant to make big money? How about get your small business to the next level? Meet Loomis resident Mark Haney. He has successfully owned, operated and sold a number of businesses and made big bucks.

“I refer to myself as the entrepreneur next door,” Haney said.

Haney currently owns 13 companies and freely offers business advice on the AM radio station KSTE 650.

“I give something I think that’s really unique compared to typical AM radio,” Haney said.

His show is recorded Thursday afternoons at Haney’s Rocklin office and simultaneously posted live on his Facebook page. Later, it is broadcast on the Sacramento radio station Saturday mornings to several thousand listeners.

Haney also calls himself an “investerpreneur” in that he looks for “start-up or later-stage companies to make them bankable.”

And he uses the term “angel investor,” or helper to these businesses to get off the ground.

BACKGROUND

Haney grew up in the Roseville area and graduated from Oakmont High School. He got his first break in the 1990s by buying a local video rental store. He then turned the store into a small chain, Placer TV Video.

It became 12 stores strong. In 1992, he got into the video security business, which churned out more than $200 million in annual revenue with approximately 300 employees. In 2010, Haney sold both businesses and became an “investor-preneur.”

“I was a partner with my brother. He retired and I couldn’t shut it off,” he said.

“So here I am.”

Without plans of slowing down any time soon, Haney keeps himself busy with work and staying healthy.

“I have to continue to work out, so I can throw batting practice to my great-grand children when I’m 85,” he said. “I need to stay in the game for a little bit.” continued on page 12

Marcus Haney is Mark Haney’s son. Like father, Marcus is also an entrepreneur and owns Haney Industrial Supply company, which caters to innovative safety products. He is also a veteran and suffered a gunshot wound while on duty in Afghanistan.

Caroline Gaines, the daughter of Senator Ted Gaines, has her own company as well. It provides outsourced public relations and sales to regional businesses.

Topics for the show are typically led by guest entrepreneurs.

“Mark will ask a question (to the guest) in a certain way and the person gets the core of the issue,” said Managing Director Medo Eldin. “Mark is very good at eliciting those reactions and responses.”

Sometimes there’s laughing, crying or inspiration, Haney added.

“A lot (of the topics are) inspired

by real-world challenges that I see in companies I own,” Haney said.

Instead of rambling off a list of dos and don’ts, business advice is extracted from the experiences of others.

“They’re business tips told through stories,” Mark Haney explained. ”It’s like a story-telling show so the audience can take away something that applies to their world.”

Haney expressed that the show is a service for business owners. “(We’re) sharing the real-world stories of successful entrepreneurs who’ve made it or are in the progress of making it. It makes people realize, ‘I’m not alone,’” he said. “Nine out of 10 start-ups fail at the first or several years. It doesn’t have to be that way.”

GIVING BACK

Struck by the injury and military service of his son, Haney has given away a number of all-terrain wheel chairs to help those who were less fortunate in combat.

He also invests in the youth of the Roseville area. His company Allegiant Giving has sponsored Del Oro High School’s baseball which carries the name: Allegiant Field.

Other high schools that have received

support are: Roseville, Oakmont, Whitney and Rocklin. He has also set up a scholarship fund for students who exhibit entrepreneur leadership. Haney said this opens the way for other students to receive recognition who may not always have the highest grade point average.

WHAT’S NEXT?

In the long run, Haney’s dream is to help 100 people to become millionaires.

And then, have an A-list party of parties at his house in the backyard. 

Back to school:

Does my child need a tutor?

chool is nearly back in session. That means backpacks and books are beginning to flood homes and the halls of schools that start early. When it comes to education, it can be hard to determine whether a tutor is advantageous for your student and which one is best suited for your child’s specific needs. After speaking to several tutors in the Auburn and Roseville areas, the insights they put forth brought clarity to the subject of tutoring.

The first and hardest step when it comes to tutoring is determining when a tutor is needed. For parents this can be especially challenging. The need for a tutor is flagged when a child receives poor grades and exudes signs of frustration and/or a lack of confidence with studies. When their attitude about learning goes south, tutoring services are recommended, said Ana Edwards of The Tutoring Center in Auburn.

“One of the most recognizable signs of danger our instructors look for is finger counting to add, which shows a lack of number sense,” Sara Nylin of Mathnasium of Roseville said.

“Obviously if a student shows interest in a topic, it would be in their best interest to support that and do whatever it takes to help them pursue and develop that interest but more importantly when a student starts to avoid doing their homework or making excuses for why they might not being doing so well, that should alert the parents that the student is struggling and they need help. Ninety percent of students will not admit to themselves that they need help, let alone tell their parents or teachers. Let’s face it, nobody likes the feeling that they’re not good at something or being told they’re not ‘smart,’” Anthony Reyes of Mathnasium of Roseville said.

To Reyes’ point, tutoring can be beneficial for both a child falling behind academically and one who shows a drive to excel.

“We can push them and they can advance beyond their grade level,” Edwards said.

Math is the No. 1 taught subject for tutors, followed close behind by reading comprehension and writing. However, each student differs, which is why the assessments that tutoring centers offer are so important.

“There is no one size fits most when it comes to math,” Nylin said.

“It’s no longer just black and white. You have to read between the lines,” Edwards said.

When asked about changes in learning, interviewed tutors agreed Common Core is the biggest change as of late. Adopted in schools, Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/ literacy. These learning goals set forth what a student should know at the end of each school year. This newest structure of

education has been a struggle with most parents and has caused confusion when helping their kids with learning, making tutors invaluable.

“When the schools changed to Common Core Math, we had an influx of students because the new curriculum was so different and many people were not prepared for it,” Nyiln said. “Also we’ve found that students with online-based homework versus traditional pencil and paper homework don’t retain as much knowledge between topics. There’s something about putting pencil to paper that really helps solidify what the student has learned.”

“I definitely think Common Core has been a hiccup in our education system,” Edwards said.

The good news is that even with all the changes and new systems being implemented, tutoring can aid students in getting their grade levels back up or higher in really a short period of time. There are even some statistics that show improvement of one grade level every six months, Edwards said.

It is never too early to prepare kids for success in the years of learning ahead of them. Some have started as early as kindergarten. Tutoring can be as simple as a few additional hours a week during the school year and breaks to keep students feeling focused and confident in their academic abilities. 

F

ood is an influencer of emotions.

Some foods have the power to make us feel nostalgic and others we eat for comfort. For many, nothing has both of those effects like a grilled cheese sandwich.

When owner Dwight Chambers opened Cheese Louise, he created a dining atmosphere that feels as comfortable as family. The Roseville location opened less than two years ago from their original location in downtown Sacramento.

“We have pretty much a prime location,” General Manager Jordan Jones said about the downtown Roseville location.

Where it is now has provided the atmosphere Cheese Louise was looking for. Regular customers will stop by just to say hi. The cozy environment feels like a home away from home.

Currently, a lot of changes are in the works with two new college campuses being built, along with new apartments and storage spaces. With the influx of

students, Cheese Louise is adapting to this new customer base.

More of a modern look is being implemented, possible dinner hours and dinner menu are in the near future, wine and beer will be added to the menu and a soup schedule will be paired with the specialty sandwiches in the beginning of the fall season.

“That’s all in motion right now,” Jones said. “My goal is to bring more life into it.”

Even the menu is getting a facelift with new recipes and a one-of-a-kind macaroni and cheese dish soon to come.

“Our main thing is pressed sandwiches, so it’s pressed paninis or what we call gourmet grilled cheeses,” Jones said.

But the menu also contains a selection of salads, sides, soups, smoothies, coffees and pastries.

“We shop all local,” he said.

The first year was a little rough for Cheese Louise, but now the restaurant is getting back on its feet and is better than ever before.

“The restaurant world is difficult,” Jones said. “I really do love it though.”

Aside from popular pressed paninis, their coffee is starting to gain a reputation.

“We do a lot of traditional coffee,” he said.

Jordan said they are very basic, but quality and care of the coffee is the focus and not what you can add to it.

“You want to taste the coffee and know what a good shot of espresso is,” he said.

They make most of their syrups for flavors in-house like vanilla and simple syrup.

Jones has been cooking since he was 12 years old. Growing up the south in Louisiana meant that he learned what good food was quickly. His love of food spread into culinary school, which he attended for two years while in high school.

“I fell in love with it,” he said.

He enjoys experimenting with new flavors and recipes, testing out which one is best for the menu.

The food at Cheese Louise is delicious, but the main mission is building a relationship with the customers and everyone who enters the establishment.

A

manda Williams is 21 years old. She is a student at Sacramento State University studying communications with an emphasis in public relations, a gymnastics teacher and a volunteer at Roseville’s KidsFirst.

KidsFirst was established in 1989 and offers training, educational outreach, preventative care, referrals and overall family wellness.

“It’s a place for resources and lots of help for anyone in the community with kids and families that need the help or want to prevent neglect and abuse,” Williams said. “We provide it for them or direct them to somewhere they can get the help.”

The nonprofit is the Child Abuse Prevention Council for Placer County. These councils can be found in every county in California, leading the way in the effort to prevent child abuse and neglect.

Williams said she started volunteering at KidsFirst because she loves kids. As a gymnastics teacher for aspiring athletes, Williams instructs children who come from families who have the time, money and income to take gymnastics classes.

“I wanted to help kids who don’t have all of these resources like the ones I teach and give back to the community,” she said.

This is precisely how Williams — and many other volunteers — has chosen to spend her spare time.

“It’s been an eye-opening experience,” Williams said somberly. “I’ve learned so much about child abuse and neglect and how to prevent it.”

One of the goals of KidsFirst is to raise awareness and accessibility through outreach and community events. Some of Williams’ roles as a volunteer include designing graphics, responding to emails, going to Roseville’s Downtown Tuesday Nights as an ambassador and attending trainings.

KidsFirst receives client referrals through public and community-based organizations such as the Child Welfare System and Placer County Victim Services Center. It also receives referrals through schools, courts, law enforcement agencies and health care providers.

Despite the nonprofit’s name, KidsFirst offers services to adults as well.

At the first event Williams attended as a volunteer, she heard a speaker — a young woman, like herself, who had a devastating, and yet inspiring, story.

The woman talked about her experience of being in an abusive relationship and getting pregnant to try and make the situation better. It didn’t make the situation better. She was addicted to drugs and when the child was born it was taken away. After months of custody battles and a restraining order against her partner, this young woman’s life seemed to be crumbling. But then she came to KidsFirst. With the proper resources and counseling, the unimaginable happened and she is now married to the father of her first child and together they have two children. She has been clean for two years.

The story affected Williams and encouraged her to keep volunteering and dedicating her time.

“I was blown away by how much of a difference this organization can make in the community, and other organizations like this,” she said.

KidsFirst welcomes volunteers every day of the week. The organization has two buildings: One in Roseville and the other in Auburn.

“KidsFirst is an amazing organization,” Williams said. “They do so much for the community whether they’re helping or giving or trying to figure something out ... everyone who works here has an amazing heart. It’s very warming to come inside. You don’t really find this in other places around Placer County.”

Williams’ goal is to determine which direction she wants to go in her future in the field of communications and public relations.

“Something I’m very interested in is event planning,” she said.

Until she decides, Williams is content being a student, teaching gymnastics and working with community behind the scenes as a volunteer with KidsFirst.

“Whatever is needed,” she said with a smile. 

“W

e stir in love is the joke I make with all my customers,” owner of Cool River Pizza Roseville Amy Dimmick said.

Dimmick’s brother and his wife opened Cool River Pizza back in 1998. When they had their sixth child, Dimmick came out to the Roseville area in 2004 to assist in the business. Two short years later, she bought the pizza parlor from her brother when he left to open other restaurants out of state. He also opened the other Cool River Pizza in Rocklin, but the two restaurants have now separated into two separate entities.

“I used to call us a ‘famchise,’” Dimmick said about keeping the business in the family.

Making good pizza is part of the family tradition. Even her daughter runs her own pizza joint on the other side of town.

The recipes on the menu at Cool River Pizza are classic, from the Mighty Gorge for meat lovers to their veggie pizza.

“Ours is more the old-fashioned pizza,” she said.

However, there are some items that can’t be found anywhere else. Many loyal customers come in frequently for the Cool Chicken Ranch pizza with creamy ranch sauce, herb chicken, crumbled bacon, tomato and red onion.

“That’s the one that kind of surprises people,” she said.

That being said, the most unique pizza on the menu that is also Dimmick’s favorite, the Tanned Tater pizza with potato, red onion, crumbled bacon, cheddar cheeses and served with sour cream.

“I’m a potato person,” Dimmick said.

“Once they try it, that’s what they are ordering. It’s kind of like a backwards potato skin.”

Most of the toppings are very standard for pizza toppings with the exception of anchovies. In fact, Cool River is one of the few restaurants that still offer the unpopular fish, but for those who love it, it is still on the menu here.

When asked what the most important ingredient is on a pizza from crust to

sauce to toppings, Dimmick simply responded with, “it’s the attention and love you put into every pizza made.”

However, learning about the importance of cheese is surprising.

There are many varieties of mozzarella cheese, its consistency and make-up can not only affect its texture, but also how it tastes.

Cheese that stretches into strings often has added cornstarch. While the

stretching length of the cheese is albeit fascinating, Dimmick isn’t a fan of the chewy nature of that specific cheese. She chose a mozzarella that is soft and melts in the mouth.

“I’ve chose one that doesn’t have the cornstarch in it,” She said. “We have a very buttery cheese.”

Along with the buttery cheese is a buttery crust with literal herbed butter rimmed on the edge before and after the oven. The fresh-made daily dough contains eggs to make it more breadlike. For those who swear they never eat the crust, or “leave the bones” as it is referred to, many have called Dimmick to the table to show her that every bite was enjoyed — crust and all.

Each pizza is placed on the convection conveyer belt oven, which makes a pizza in four minutes and 40 seconds with no chance of burned edges.

I took my first sous chef job at 28 and my first chef job at 30. About 16 years.

What is your favorite dish or specialty?

Probably my salmon dish. I love fennel and cauliflower together, with a little brown butter and sage, paired with a pistachio pesto and pasta.

What do you make when you’re not at the restaurant?

I’ve been trying to get my kids to fall in love with cooking so basics like a great mashed potato or summer squash from the garden sautéed with coconut oil.

1. Easy on the eyes: Inspect your melon to see if it has any cracks, bruising or soft spots.

2. The duller the better: Especially with watermelon and honeydew, a dull exterior is a sign of a ripe melon. If the skin is shiny, it could indicate it’s under ripe.

3. Heavy is a good thing: If a melon feels heavy for its size, it’s a good sign.

4. Tap it and listen: Tap the melon with the palm of your hand and listen for a hollow sound.

5. Smell, smell, smell: Push your fingers on the spot where the vine used to be attached and the slightly soft spot on the melon should release a fragrance that is very pleasant.

When we were kids, the myth that eating watermelons seeds would make the tasty fruit grow inside your stomach was a scary thought until it was debunked in older age. Each slice given to you as a kid would then introduce several minutes of picking apart the watermelon until each white and black seed was safely removed before consuming.

Now those pesky seeds are more of a nuisance rather than an outright fear. Turns out the difference between the white and black seeds that freckle the bright pink interior is maturity. In fact all 200-800 of the seeds will start out white before turning black when watermelon is are ready for harvesting.

Good news, despite the maturity, the seeds are indeed perfectly edible.

In fact most contain a great deal of the recommended daily protein intake.

On another note, seedless watermelons don’t have seeds because they are considered “sterile hybrids,” a genetically modified melon that doesn’t grow seeds.

Some may contain hard seed coats giving the impression of seeds, but if given a closer look the “seeds” are completely empty.

Fresh Cantaloupe Margarita Serves 1 INGREDIENTS: 2 cups fresh cantaloupe 2 ounces silver tequila 1 ounce triple sec ¾ ounce lime juice Lime wedges for garnish and sea salt for rimming the glass *For a blended beverage simply add ice to desired thickness.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Place cantaloupe in a blender and pulse until smooth. Strain the mixture to remove excess pulp and save the juice.

2. Place ice, 2 ½ ounces of cantaloupe juice (save the rest for more drinks), tequila, triple sec, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker and shake until cold.

3. Strain again if desired. Pour into glass and garnish. Sip and enjoy!

4. To rim glasses, rub a lime wedge on the edge and dip into salt.

any of our Kaiser Permanente surgery patients been surprised by some major changes in their care: Shorter hospital stays, or in some cases discharge home just hours after surgery. For some common procedures, such as knee or hip replacements, patients no longer have to fast for an extended period of time before going to the operating room.

These changes are part of a program we use across all our medical centers in Northern California, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, or ERAS, an evidence-based approach that helps patients heal faster, feel better and return home sooner after certain surgeries.

ERAS began in Europe and focused on changing practices that had been in place for many years.

Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center adopted it in 2014. With our success, it has since expanded across our 20 Northern California hospitals.

This past May, researchers from the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research published a study on the impact of ERAS in the Journal of the American Medical Association Surgery.

The results are remarkable. Among the 9,000 Kaiser Permanente patients who have experienced ERAS, the program resulted in a one-third relative reduction in postoperative complication rates and a 21 percent reduction in opioid prescribing rates.

The study also showed decreased hospital mortality among colorectal resection patients and increased rates of home discharge over discharge to skilled nursing facilities among hip fracture patients.

In other words, patients experiencing ERAS had safer surgeries and experienced less severe pain afterward. Those who had risky colorectal surgery had better survival rates and those with hip surgery

went right home instead of to a nursing facility between the hospital and home.

What are we doing differently with ERAS? ERAS takes a team approach that involves surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, health educators, anesthesiologists, and other caregivers over a period of weeks. The hallmarks of the program are enhanced nutrition before and after surgery, early movement and walking after surgery, and a better approach to post-operative pain with less reliance on opioids.

My colleague Dr. Mark Skinner, an assistant physician-in-chief and orthopedic surgeon, describes ERAS as a medical milestone, especially for patients requiring total joint surgeries such as knee and hip replacements. Well more than half of these patients go home within hours of having their surgery.

“I’ve been doing this for 23 years and ERAS has been a fantastic change because the patients get to recover in their homes where they’re more comfortable. They just seem to have less pain than in the hospital,” Dr. Skinner said.

More than six out of every 10 patients who undergo colorectal operations and hip replacements are walking within 12 hours of surgery, which is a two-to-five-fold increase compared to before ERAS. Walking early reduces the risk of complications like infections and blood clots.

There are other advantages, too: Recovering at home lessens the risk of acquiring an infection, and patients also feel better because they can take alternative pain medicines that rely less on opiates, which reduces side effects such as sedation, delirium, nausea and constipation. ERAS has also been shown to decrease readmissions following discharge. This is due to fewer hospital-associated complications and less debilitation from lying around in bed.

To qualify for ERAS, patients must be nonsmokers, have a healthy body mass index, and keep diseases such as diabetes under control. The healthier the patient, the better the chances of a successful recovery.

ERAS candidates attend one or two classes that explain the procedure, how to prepare for it, and what to expect after discharge. A few hours before surgery, patients are given a carbohydrate-rich beverage to drink, which gives them extra energy and hydration. Before being wheeled into the operating room, patients no longer have to be put under general anesthesia, which causes delirium later; now they receive a spinal anesthetic that targets the specific part of their body.

Patients are sent home with a variety of medicines, some of which include injections to block pain, and fewer of the addictive narcotics that can cause people to feel sleepy or sick.

In many cases, a physical therapist will go to the patient’s house two or three times a week to help them continue to move and get stronger. This is both a convenient and quicker way to recover.

“This is such a major improvement to the way we used to do things,” said my colleague Dr. James Voigtlander, an assistant physician-in-chief who performs hip, shoulder and knee surgeries and was instrumental in starting the protocol.

ERAS is being used for an increasing number of surgeries, including hysterectomies and hip fractures, at our different hospitals. Eventually, we expect the enhanced recovery principles to be used for almost every surgical procedure.

As you can probably imagine, patients are pleasantly surprised to learn they don’t have to spend even one night in a medical center for procedures that used to require hospitalization for up to a week. 

This is a very hot topic with a lot of my clients right now. People seem to either love precious metals and allocate way too much of their portfolio to it, or don’t want anything to do with it. Very rarely do I see someone who has a reasonable allocation to a precious metal.

The pros are precious metals don’t always move in alignment with the rest of the market. This makes it a great tool to diversify and mitigate some market risk. Within a certain limited period, precious metals have earned a decent rate of return.

The cons? It is a tangible asset that isn’t as readily tradable like a stock is. You must find a buyer and agree on a price if you want to sell the asset. It can also be very volatile.

REAL ESTATE

You have probably read or heard that everybody makes loads of money in real estate and some lofty statistic that correlates millionaires to investing in real estate. The pros of real estate are the tax advantages, the cash-flow opportunities and potential appreciation. The disadvantages are, similarly to precious metals, it isn’t as readily converted to cash. It takes time to make real estate transactions, often include an agent that can add fees, there are expenses involved in owning real estate, and it takes constant management.

The last one is the issue I have in recommending real estate to my clients. The commercials on TV and fliers in the mail advertise claims of double-digit returns while you sleep. Historically, cash flow has been the greatest opportunity for wealth building

with real estate, not appreciation on its own. There is management, upkeep, repairs, replacements, finding tenants and such involved. To do it yourself is stressful. To hire out help eats into the returns.

Real estate can be a good fit for investors who like to play a more active role in their portfolio.

I just like to make sure their expectations are in alignment with the most likely reality.

ART

This is probably the least liquid of the three alternative investments we have discussed. Art takes careful due diligence as the valuations and market size is much smaller than precious metals and real estate. As a result, I have only seen art acquired for lifestyle reasons more than investment reasons. If you enjoy art and it is something you want to invest in, consider working with an expert or two in the industry and don’t take shortcuts in researching before making acquisitions.

Your greatest risk is probably overpaying followed by not being able to resell it at the valuation price.

The risk of losing money due to actual lost value of the piece of art is smaller than those first two risks in my opinion.

If you have interest in alternative investments, but don’t have any experience yet, consider researching ETFs, or exchange traded funds. There are ETFs that invest in commodities, in precious metal-related companies, in real estate and more.

That is one way to gain exposure in your portfolio and some experience before committing to holding the physical assets.
