Wineology
INTELLIGENCE FOR THE WINE CONSUMER
BY LEN NAPOLITANO
Which wines are best for cooking? Any chef who also loves wine will tell you never to use a wine in your recipe that you don’t think is good enough to drink. And one thing probably most would agree with is to not use wines labeled as “cooking wine.” These wines contain salt and do not have the complexity of flavor that you need from this vital ingredient. Using a quality wine doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to be expensive. It would make no sense to use a rare vintage of Bordeaux, either. However, you do want something with style, flavor and depth. Depending on the type of wine, it could cost under $10 and still provide quality. Wine used in cooking will gradually lose some of its alcoholic strength as it is cooked. The longer it cooks, the more alcohol will be evaporated. What will remain are the basic flavors of the wine, which marries with other ingredients in the pan.
Len Napolitano is the author of Nose, Legs, Body! Know Wine Like The Back of Your Hand, a quick and easy guide for the wine beginner. Available at bookstores and at wineology.com Follow Len on... TACKITT FAMILY 6640 Von Dollen Road, San Miguel Friday-Sunday 12-5 • 805-467-9490 www.tackittfamilyvineyards.com Come talk with the winemaker, enjoy the wines, and just relax in our open country setting. Bring in this ad and receive 10% off on your purchase.
When choosing a wine for a particular dish, try to match the primary flavor components of the wine with those of the dish. Here are some dry table wines commonly used for cooking and their typical flavor contributions: Chardonnay: green apple, butter, butterscotch, vanilla Sauvignon Blanc: herbal, vegetal, citrus Pinot Noir: mushroom, red cherry, truffle Merlot: blackberry, cocoa Zinfandel: jam, blackberry, black pepper Cabernet: cassis, black currant Another factor to consider when cooking with wine is the timing of the addition of the wine. The earlier the wine is added in the cooking process, the more alcohol will be evaporated. But there are cases when the alcohol is desired in the recipe. A splash of wine added near the end of the process will retain nearly all of its alcohol content. If you’re thinking of using fortified wines like genuine Sherry, Port, Madeira and Marsala wines, be aware that they contain elevated alcohol levels to begin with. Most will retain a good amount of their sweetness, although some can be fully dry. Wine will boil at a lower temperature than water, around 175 degrees versus 212 degrees. So, if you substitute wine for water in a recipe, remember adjust the cooking time to compensate for the lower boiling temperature.

PEACHY CANYON WINERY There are many reasons you may be familiar with Peachy Canyon wines. It may be because you can find these wines throughout the United States and around the world, or it may be due to the many awards and accolades Peachy Canyon has received. Either way, you’ll want to try the wines that have made Peachy Canyon noteworthy.
Find Peachy Canyon Just About Anywhere Peachy Canyon wines are sold in 46 states, and in Asia, Europe and Canada. Doug Beckett, who owns Peachy Canyon with his wife Nancy, said, “It is great to be at this point.”
Two of the largest markets are California and Arizona. Particular markets have their own best sellers. In the United States, he said that the Zinfandels are the most popular.
One of a Kind Wines One of Peachy Canyon’s new wines, the Davis Block Zinfandel, was produced from a 100-year-old vine that came from an unusual source. Beckett said that UC Davis had collected vines from 100 vineyards in order to do research on different aspects of plant health. Beckett was given 18 of these vines to make his own wines. From one of these vines, Beckett produced 25 cases of the Davis Block Zinfandel. “It is one of the most exotic Zinfandels. It is going to be an eyeopening experience. We are really excited,” he said. In the next three to four years, Beckett expects to release more wines produced from the Davis Block. They will be low-yield, highquality wines, with concentrated flavors, he said.
Peachy Canyon’s Wines and Their Accolades Tasting room is open daily: 10 am to 5:30 pm 805- 239-1918 | www.peachycanyon.com 1480 N Bethel Road, Templeton, CA 93465 16
Some of Peachy Canyon’s wines that have received recognition include: Vortex Zinfandel which received 91points from Wine Enthusiast, the 2014 Westside Zinfandel which received 91points from Wine Enthusiast and was named Editor’s Choice, and the 2014 Petite Sirah which received 92points from Wine Enthusiast. Peachy Canyon Zinfandels are what the winery is well known

for, however, you will find a variety of wines available at the winery, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec.
Looking Forward to the Wines to Come After years of drought, Beckett said the recent rains in California have caused excitement. He said the vineyard soil is clean and healthy. “The bad elements have been leached out,” he said. He is looking forward to the upcoming harvest. “It has been a wonderful year,” he added.
Focusing on Sustainability One of the ways Peachy Canyon seeks to address environmental concerns is through employing sustainable practices. “Peachy Canyon has always been very, very aware of its environment,” Beckett said. “Of how much we contribute and how much we will impact the environment.” By using solar panels, composting refuse and practicing water conservation the vineyard seeks to meet environmental goals. The winery property uses about 980 solar panels to produce more than 200 kilowatts of power. The system provides power for several irrigation wells, a 50,000-squarefoot winery, two residences and the Chronic Cellars tasting room. Winemaking equipment and storage areas use a lot of electricity, especially during the summer and harvest. The solar panels are equipped with a way to store energy so that areas which may be in shade can be offset by those in full sunlight. In addition to using solar power, Peachy Canyon composts all byproducts from the farming process. Water conservation is also a priority. Strategic watering reduces runoff and water waste, and the need for electricity.

The 2017 Central Coast Wine Competition Unveils Winners Final wine results and awards are in; wineries from six counties in the Central Coast are among winners The Central Coast Wine Competition (CCWC) is proud to announce the award-winning wines from its 15th annual blind-tasting event, held June 21-22 at the California MidState Fair. Best in Show went to Broken Earth Winery’s 2015 Grenache. The honor came after judges awarded it a Gold Medal and deemed it both Best in Class (Grenache) and Best Red Wine. Broken Earth’s win marks the second year in a row the top wine included Paso Robles Rhône grape. Last year’s winner was a Grenache-based blend from San Marcos Creek Winery. The Best White Wine was awarded to Eberle Winery’s 2016 Muscat Canelli. The off-dry white wine from the Paso Robles winery also won a Gold Medal and was awarded Best in Class in the Off Dry-to-Sweet White category. Best Pink Wine went to Kitá Wines 2016 Grenache Rosé. The rosé from the Santa Ynez Valley winery also won a Gold Medal and was awarded Best in Class for Grenache Rosé category. Best Sparkling Wine was awarded to Laetitia Vineyard & Winery’s 2014 Brut Cuvée. The bubbles from the Arroyo Grande winery also claimed a Gold Medal and was awarded Best in Class for the Méthode Champenois category. Best Dessert Wine was awarded to Glunz Family Winery’s Mission Angelica. The wine from the Paso Robles winery also won a Gold Medal and was awarded Best in Class for the Fortified Wine category. The complete list of gold, silver and bronze medals, as well best in class winners, is available on CentralCoastWineComp.com. Of the nearly 700 category entries, 140 gold medals were awarded to wineries in the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. “I think we saw the best entries to date, and it’s only going to get better every year here at the California Mid-State Fair,” said returning Chief Judge, Tim McDonald, president of Wine Spoken Here. The judging took place at Estrella Hall at the California Mid-State Fair over two days. On the first day, the 19 judges blind tasted through nearly 700 wines, rating and then voting on which should be awarded a gold medal and best in class honor. The following day, the 67 best in class wines were blind tasted and awarded best red, white, rosé, sparkling and dessert. The 19 judges this year included Matt Kettmann 24
of Wine Enthusiast magazine, Mary Orlin of the San Jose Mercury News, author Patrick Comiskey, of Wine & Spirits, and Jim Blumling, group vice president of wine, beer & spirits at Albertsons/Safeway. For a complete list of judges, visit CentralCoastWineComp.com. The judges agreed the 2017 entries further prove the Central Coast has rightfully earned its place among the best wine regions on the planet. “I was extremely impressed not only the tremendous quality, but with the nuances and artful expressions of the wines. Simply awesome,” said Judge Matt Kettmann. “The entries show a real confidence in Central Coast grape growing and winemaking, from every corner of the region.” The Awards for Winery of the Year, Winemaker of the Year, Wine Grower of the Year, and Wine Industry Person of the Year will be announced at the 2017 California Mid-State Fair Wine Industry Awards, July 21. Taking place during the annual Mid-State Fair (July 19-30), the public event allows fairgoers to sample this year’s 140 Gold Medal-winning wines. More information about the event can be found by visiting, midstatefair.com. “The fact is, some of the best wines in the world are being made right here in the Central Coast – from Monterey to Ventura,” said said Mid-State Fair CEO Michael Bradley. “And CCWC is the ideal way to highlight, celebrate and experience these world-class wines that are being crafted by our neighbors.”
About The Central Coast Wine Competition Central Coast Wine Competition promotes the excellent quality and diversity of commercial wineries and grape growers while recognizing the fastest growing wine region in California. In its 15th year, the Central Coast Wine Competition is a collaboration of six California fairs and highlights the wine industry as an integral agricultural component of the community. Gold medal winners will be showcased at the California Mid-State Fair; Contra Costa County Fair; Cow Palace/Grand National Livestock Exposition, Horse Show and Rodeo; Monterey County Fair; San Benito County Fair; and Santa Maria Fairpark. Thomas Hill Organics Announces Chef A shared passion for farm-to-table cuisine brings together the all-star pairing of Chef Kurt Metzger and Debbie Thomas, proprietor of Thomas Hill Organics. The duo will continue to elevate the Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo, California restaurants, as well as the catering division, to a level on par with the best eateries on the West Coast. A veteran of the California culinary scene, Metzger established himself with his acclaimed Kitchen 4140 and The Spotted Cow Catering & Pop-Up Dinner Co. Both were based in San Diego, where Metzger’s name became synonymous with bringing the most out of simple, fresh ingredients to create memorable experiences. His Braised Shortribs with Smoked, Crispy Polenta were included in the Food Network’s “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” and will be one of the many items coming out of the wood fire oven in Paso Robles. Metzger’s years of exploring the state’s top wine regions ultimately prompted his move to the Central Coast wine country. He believes that the local wineries are a natural extension of the farm to table approach. “Debbie and I share a love of great food and great wine; the idea that simple and fresh ingredients can be combined to create something unexpected,” said Metzger. “Given the quality of farmers markets in the area and my love of working with local fishermen and
butchers, I’m excited to see how the menu will change each month.” The much celebrated Thomas Hill Organics in Paso Robles– established in 2009–was one of the first restaurants in the area to craft a menu dedicated to organic, locally-sourced ingredients. Following the success of her Paso Robles location, owner and visionary Debbie Thomas decided to open a second location in San Luis Obispo to accommodate the demand for her authentic, regional cuisine while furthering her passion for sharing fresh, locally sourced ingredients with guests. Metzger will now oversee both kitchens, as well as the catering division. In Paso Robles, Bennett Haas has been promoted to chef de cuisine; in San Luis Obispo, Dimitri Cotler will be the new sous chef; and Sam Chesebro will be the lead catering chef.
Mama’s Meatball: Fine Italian & Catering
PASO ROBLES
Ask locals or somebody in the restaurant business—a bartender, a waiter, even a bus boy—what they think of Mama’s Meatball in San Luis Obispo and their eyes roll towards the heavens as they breathe a deep sigh; that is how good Mama’s Meatball is. Set in a small courtyard off of one of the town’s main streets in a place called the Old Creamery, Mama’s Meatball is actually divided in two. On the right is the takeout where people line up to get their orders of meatballs and more. To the left, fronted by a huge-trunked tree and a water fountain, is the intimate restaurant with its mural of the Mediterranean across the back. Meatballs aside, the restaurant, under owner and chef Nicola Allegretta, offers a wide range of authentic Italian dishes. Among them are half a dozen soups, a long list of salads (including grilled salmon and a refreshing pear and gorgonzola), some wonderful antipasto choices, both hot and cold paninis (including, of course, one made with meatballs) and plenty of pasta dishes—the Ravioli di Pollo all Vodka, homemade ravioli filled with chicken and served in a vodka sauce, cannot go unmentioned. There is also a heady selection of meat and fish dishes as well as any number of traditional and specialty pizzas, and some far too-tempting desserts. For a visit to the most authentic fine Italian restaurant in town, head to Mama’s Meatball, located in the Old Creamery plaza at 570 Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo.

Wine Tasting in San Luis Obispo County 28
I
t’s no wonder the people here call it SLO. No one is in any hurry in the cafes or on the sidewalks, and certainly no one is in any rush to leave. Strangers are genuinely friendly, always ready to talk about their favorite hiking trail or barbecue joint, or to point the way to the winery with the best Pinot Noir. It’s all part of the SLO life, that combination of good stuff that makes visiting here so nourishing to the soul. San Luis Obispo’s unusual natural beauty, along with its gentle climate, first attracted the Spanish padres to the area in the 1700s. In 1772 they built the fifth of California’s 21 missions here, on the banks of San Luis Creek, and named it Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Today, many consider this the most beautiful of the Spanish missions. More than 200 wineries produce critically acclaimed vintages in Paso Robles, Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley. Visitors can head out along the gorgeous country roads to sip their way through the vineyards. For more information on San Luis Obispo County, go to visitslo.com or visit www.pasowine.com.

Good to Know Before Heading to the Wineries BY CHARLES NEAVE For the most part, going wine tasting is about the easiest thing in the world, especially in California where wineries and tasting rooms abound. Mostly, wine tasting is a matter of doing a little research and planning your day. Here are some tips that have proven to be helpful and are designed to help make the sensory adventure of wine tasting all the more enjoyable. Before you start off, pack a few essentials. Water (plenty of water) and something to snack on—crackers or a baguette. Many wineries have picnic areas and there are plenty of delis and bakeries that can make up a lunch for you, or make your own. Be sure to nibble during the day and make time for lunch. Two tips: drink at least twice as much water as you do wine, and remember that you don’t have to drink everything poured into your glass. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Time again I have heard knowledgeable winery workers say that there is no such thing as a stupid question, and they mean that. You can drink what you want, in the order you want. If you like reds, say so; if you don’t like sweet wines, speak up. But the idea of starting with whites, then going on to reds and then sweet wines is a good guide. If there is a particular wine you want to try and it is not on the list, ask. Most tasting rooms are happy to pour a little if you show enthusiasm. Look for tasting rooms in towns. Many of these are cooperative tasting rooms, where in one place you might find wines from a dozen or more small-to-medium premium producers.

Zaca Mesa Winery & Vineyards Zaca Mesa is a place that offers many options for wine connoisseurs. Try one of the winery’s Syrahs made from the oldest plantings in the Santa Barbara County, or any one of their amazing wines, such as the Z Cuvee or the Grenache. In addition, attend one of the winery’s educational events to learn about the winemaking process from Zaca Mesa experts. With something for everyone, Zaca Mesa makes a trip to Foxen Canyon memorable.
What Makes Zaca Mesa Special Zaca Mesa Winery & Vineyard has a long history in the Central Coast. The property was purchased in 1972 by John Cushman and five of his friends, and the first vines were planted a year later. Winemakers started by planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and other varieties. As one of the first vineyards in the area, it took some experimentation to see which grape varieties would produce the best wines. In 1978, Zaca Mesa planted the first Syrah vineyard in Santa Barbara County and by the early 1990s Syrah became the focus of the vineyard and winery. Over the years, Zaca Mesa became famous for its Syrahs. The 1993 Zaca Mesa Syrah was the first Central Coast wine to make it into Wine Spectator’s Top Ten list. It came in sixth and was made by winemaker Daniel Gehrs. This wine was honored in another way as well. It was served at the White House during an official state dinner for French President Jacques Chirac in 1996. The original Syrah planting became known as the Black Bear Block, while one of Zaca Mesa’s newest releases, the Estrella Syrah, is a single clone release from the original Black Bear Block planting, which includes subsequent plantings of those old vines throughout the vineyard.
Zaca Mesa University There is a section of the winery’s website that is called Zaca Mesa University. There is a good reason for this. From the beginning, Zaca Mesa has been a place for learning and innovation. John Cushman 34

A Tasting Room Experience One of the best ways to experience Zaca Mesa wines is by visiting the winery’s tasting room, nestled up against the San Rafael Mountains on Foxen Canyon Road. You can learn about the varieties grown on the 150-acre vineyard, and taste one of Zaca Mesa’s many estate vineyard Rhône varietals or off property wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. If you are up for a challenge, you can try your hand at a game of chess on a life-sized chessboard or just enjoy the picnic tables overlooking the estate. You can also make use of a new event space near the Grenache Blanc vines that is designed to be used for weddings and special events – by appointment only. There are a variety of options for those visiting the winery’s tasting room. You can choose the mixed flight for $15, the reserve red flight for $25, or the winery tour and tasting for $30 (reservations are required).
and the early winemakers learned the wine trade together. While most have moved on to other endeavors, the knowledge gained from experimentation has helped train the next generation of winemakers in Santa Barbara County. Zaca University alumni include Ken Brown, from Byron in Santa Maria, Adam Tolmach, from Ojai Vineyard, Jim Clendenen, from Au Bon Climat, and Bob Lindquist, from Qupé as well as many others. While professional winemakers come to Zaca Mesa to explore their craft, the winery’s educational opportunities aren’t only for professionals. The winery holds a series of annual events to provide an in-depth educational experience for anyone wanting to learn about winemaking and vineyard techniques. For those who can’t attend on-site events, Zaca Mesa has educational resources and notes on its website available. The winery is located at 6905 Foxen Canyon Road in Los Olivos. The tasting room is open during the summer from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Wine Tasting in Santa Barbara County 38
A Spirit and Passion for Winemaking O
n the southern end of the Central Coast appellation, lies Santa Barbara County’s historic wine growing region. The first vineyard production in these rolling coastal hills dates back to 1782, when Junipero Serra planted vines on Mission land. About a hundred years later, there was 260 acres of luscious vineyards and seventeen winemakers in Santa Barbara County. Sadly, the Prohibition Era destroyed many of these historic vineyard sites and mostly put an end to winemaking in the region—as was the case in many of the beautiful winegrowing regions across the state. With that being said, the spirit and passion for winemaking never left Santa Barbara County, and this wine growing region is alive and well today. Talented winemakers are producing outstanding and pure terroir driven wines from the five American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), planted mostly to Burgundian, Rhône and Bordeaux grape varieties. Although the movie Sideways is said to have put San Barbara County’s wine growing region on the map in 2004, especially the Santa Maria Valley AVA, it is the high quality of the wine across the county that has continued to uphold this bountiful region’s reputation. Sprawling vineyards and gently rolling hills create a picturesque scene for visitors and locals alike, who visit the many wineries, tasting rooms and wine bars in the area. In the five AVAs, wine tasters will find a nice range of wine styles amongst the Burgundian, Rhone and Bordeaux varietals that are produced. In the more northern region, cool climate Burgundian varietals reign, such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, due to the maritime influence. This ensures a long temperate growing season which the Burgundian varietals crave. With ample amount of sunlight, the grapes ripen very slowly— perfect for producing terroir driven wines with pure varietal characteristics. In the southern region, there is more of a diurnal shift with warmer nights and cooler days. This area sees less fog and has different soil types than what is found closer to the coast. The Bordeaux and Rhine varieties flourish in this warmer climate and the sandy soils with limestone and chalk impart a wonderfully desirable minerality in the wines. The wineries in Santa Barbara County boast a concentration of incredibly passionate and talented winemakers; join them year round at their many events, celebrations and festivals, as well as in their tasting rooms.

The most common tasting experience is a Wine Bar Tasting. You step up to the bar where typically a list of wines being poured is displayed. Expect to pay a tasting fee between $10$40. Some tasting bars will offer you the option to taste a library or reserve wine. Exercising this option increases the fee, but will allow you to taste very unique, old or rare wines.
Sit Down Tasting A Sit Down Tasting usually requires an appointment, and there may be a slightly higher fee than a wine bar fee. Seated in an elegant room, you are poured several wines by your winery host. Expect your host to describe the unique characteristics of each wine and how it was made.

A Walk Around Tasting is a combination of a tour and a tasting. Your host brings along several bottles of wine on your tour, and may take you to a garden area of the winery to pour the first round. Then you move to another place within the winery to sample the next wine. This experience continues until all the wines are tasted.
8
Another popular tasting experience that can be part of a tour or a Walk Around is a Barrel Tasting. Your guide takes a “wine thief,” a special siphon placed into a hole in the top of a barrel to extract tasting samples of a maturing wine. The sample allows you to taste what the wine is like in the middle of developing its full potential. Why make an appointment? Some wineries are so small that they need to know when you are coming so someone will be there to greet you. Others have sit-down tastings that start and end at specific times. It’s always a good idea to schedule your appointments well in advance.

Santa Maria Costa de Oro Tasting Room Costa de Oro Tasting Room is located right off of Highway 101 in Santa Maria. This site pays tribute to the history behind Costa De Oro — it was the strawberry stand for Gold Coast Farms, the parent company of Costa De Oro, which has been farming Santa Maria since 1978. Gold Coast Vineyard was planted to 20 acres of Pinot Noir and 10 acres of Chardonnay in 1989, and these grapes were sold to the area’s best wineries — including Au Bon Climat. Gary Burk, Costa de Oro co-owner and winemaker, was fortunate to work in the winery with Jim Clendenen from 1994-2002, and during this time he began to make his own wine. Gary started with just one barrel of Chardonnay and one barrel of Pinot Noir. Today, Costa de Oro produces more than 6000 cases featuring Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the estate — Gold Coast Vineyard. The best place to experience the wines is at the tasting room, where guests can taste five wines for only $10. In addition to regular tasting room hours (normally 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily), each Friday evening, Costa de Oro hosts “Friday Night Wine Downs” featuring live music from local musicians. Another facet to the Costa de Oro portfolio is their “Wine on Tap.” Kegged wine, wine stored and shipped inside five gallon kegs instead of bottles, has been gaining popularity throughout the past several years. Costa de Oro started kegging wine for high-end
accounts, like Roy’s Hawaii. Now these wines, a white and a red, are available in the tasting room by the glass and by the growler (these can be refilled). Costa de Oro wine club members receive discounts on keg wines, bottled wines and merchandise.

The Central Coast’s most historic wine lives in the Santa Maria Valley. The area has the oldest appellation in the area and nearly two centuries of experience in growing grapes. The Santa Maria Valley is one of the most agriculturally diverse regions in the U.S. with a wealth of fruits and vegetables grown on the valley floor and vineyards hugging the hillsides. It’s a place where flavor runs rampant and taste buds can indulge because what they serve is grown, cooked and corked right here. The Santa Maria Valley has one of California’s longest growing seasons and a truly rare transverse geography resulting in the development of complex, flavorful and balanced grapes. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah are our specialties. These are composed of well-drained soils that also contribute to exceptional fruit intensity and flavor concentration. The Santa Maria Valley is a recognized American Viticultural Area (AVA) within Santa Barbara County; the AVA encompasses one of the top wine regions in the world. The Travel Channel named the Santa Maria Valley The New Top 10 Cities for Wine Snobs. For more information, visit santamariavalley.com.
Santa Maria Valley “We are absolutely thrilled about providing our visitors a new way to experience the gorgeous scenery of the Santa Maria Valley while allowing them to stop at many different locations and attractions,” said Glenn Morris, president and chief executive officer of the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor and Convention Bureau. “It is another fantastic reason to explore this hidden gem of an area and enjoy what we locals get to experience every day.”

Foxen Canyon Firestone Vineyard A Historical Site Founded in 1972, Firestone was the first major estate winery established in this pastoral Central Coast AVA. Over the past 40 years it has evolved into one of the region’s most popular and successful producers thanks to a portfolio of wines that offer serious quality at reasonable prices.
Estate Vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley Although not a household name, the Santa Ynez Valley actually has the greatest concentration of wineries in Santa Barbara County. Prior to Prohibition, the valley had roughly 5,000 acres under vine. It took until nearly four decades after repeal for commercial viticulture to reestablish itself. Santa Ynez Valley was granted AVA (American Viticultural Area) status in 1983 and today boasts more than 7,500 acres devoted to vines.
The Local Terroir The viticultural highlight of Firestone is its 340 acres of estate vineyards set along a series of mesas composed of sandy loam with rocky sub-soils. These well-draining soils minimize vine vigor, which leads to great concentration, accuracy, balance and structure in all of the wines.

The combination of a long growing season and low-nutrient soils allows the estate to cultivate an astonishing range of wines. Firestone’s reds include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Pinot Noir. The whites consist of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
Firestone Tasting Room Firestone boasts one of the most popular tasting rooms in Santa Barbara County. The lovely visitors’ center has an expansive island bar backed by large picture windows that look out on the vines. For private events, Firestone has a handful of indoor and outdoor areas perfect for weddings, receptions, corporate gatherings, birthdays or anniversaries. In addition to its featured and reserve tasting options, Firestone is one of the few wineries that offers a comprehensive and complimentary public tour, running daily at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. After the 30-minute in-depth tour, guests can picnic outside and view the estate vineyards, which have been planted on a series of mesas. This summer, don’t miss Firestone’s Concert Series held the first and last Friday of each month from 6 to 9 p.m. through October. Enjoy food, wine, and live music. Los Olivos Lincourt Vineyards Casual Graciousness of Santa Barbara County Founded in 1996 by Proprietor Bill Foley, Lincourt Vineyards retains the rural charm and simplicity of an earlier era. Lincourt is one of those rare wineries capable of producing world-class bottlings from both Bordeaux and Burgundian varieties while incorporating sustainable methods that have elevated the winery to the upper echelon of Santa Barbara County.
Hand Crafted from Start to Finish At Lincourt, the winery harvests fruit based on flavors, not numbers. Utilizing small-lot fermentation and French oak barrels, Winemaker Lorna Kreutz is involved in every step of the process. The wines produced are 100% Santa Barbara County, with estate vineyards in Santa Ynez and the Sta. Rita Hills, including Alamo Pintado (Sauvignon Blanc), La Cuesta (Cabernet), and Rancho Santa Rosa (Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Noir, Syrah). The soils are maritime-based and the weather is cool, creating rich silky wines thanks to ocean breezes.
Highly Acclaimed Wine Selections Year after year, Lincourt wines have garnered the attention of the industry’s top reviewers and publications. Recent scores from Wine Enthusiast on the 2014 vintage wines include the Carol Ann Chardonnay (90 points), Courtney’s Chardonnay (91 points), Annie Dyer Pinot Noir (92 points) and Sta. Rita Hills Syrah (90 points).
And, based on Lincourt prized vineyards and winemaking methods, it’s no wonder. Lincourt’s award-winning wines are the perfect accompaniment to any meal. Summer favorites include the Steel Chardonnay and Rancho Santa Rosa Chardonnay. With complex and vibrant flavors, Lincourt’s Chardonnays pair well with a variety of foods, and can also stand alone as an aperitif on a warm summer evening.
Sip and Play Once a dairy property, the warm and cozy winery is located along Alamo Pintado Road in Solvang, nestled under California pepper trees with sweeping views of the vineyard. While you’re there, enjoy a tasting of their current release wines with a knowledgeable tasting room host. The winery offers the perfect spot to spend a leisurely day in the Valley, offering picturesque charm on 30 acres. This summer, don’t miss Lincourt’s Summer Concert Series. Enjoy live music, yard games and your favorite Lincourt wines for a fun-filled evening. Concerts are free to the public and held the third Friday of every month through October. Los Olivos J Ludlow Vineyards Small Production and Dedication to Craft J Ludlow Vineyard, up in the idyllic Los Olivos area, is the home away from home for owners Allan and Jane Jones. Originally from Cardiff, Wales, the couple fell in love with the Santa Ynez Valley during one of their many trips to California. Stumbling upon a beautiful ranch in Happy Canyon, they quickly developed an interest in wine, purchasing Westerly Stud Farm in 2007. Keeping production small, their dedication to their craft is evident by their numerous awards and recent accolades.
Los Olivos Tasting Room With high ceilings, big windows, and a welcoming atmosphere, it is the perfect place to grab a glass of their award-winning wine. Sourcing most of their grapes from Camp 4 and La Presa Vineyards in the Valley, the winery strives to keep things local and family-run, dedicated to great taste and a sheer enjoyment of wine.
All in the Family Family ties inspire each varietal, including their wine club aptly entitled “The Old Ludlowdian.” One of their most popular sellers, “Kemsley” Cabernet Sauvignon – is named after Allan, who holds the prestigious title of Lord Kemsley in Great Britain. The winery itself is named after the street Allan was born on. And of course, the 2008 “Jane” Merlot, a gold medal winner at the Los Angeles International Wine Competition, is named after his beloved wife.
Other unique wine club highlights include a Pinot Grigio and Primitivo Rose, perfect for any summer picnic. Heavily involved in charity, the jigsaw logo signifies their commitment to fighting autism and Asperger’s worldwide (a common symbol in healthcare and popular culture). In their native country, Allan and Jane Jones own Beechwood College, a specialist residential college for students dealing with these very conditions. They also work closely with the Koegel Autism Center at UC Santa Barbara and make a donation to the center for every bottle of Sauvignon Blanc sold in the tasting room. >> BY RACHEL HOMMEL

Los Olivos Dragonette Vineyard and Winery A Committed Triumvirate In 2005, brothers John and Steve Dragonnette, along with their close friend Brandon Sparks-Gillis, wine geeks extraordinaire, founded Dragonette Cellars. Santa Barbara County was their destination, with a vision and commitment to produce the finest wines, reflective of the diverse terroir, giving special attention to farming practices and care of the land. Their success is evident by the wines produced, the ratings and awards they have received and validated by their loyal followers, which is ultimately the true test of success.
A Simple Philosophy The beauty of their wines is mirrored in the simplicity of their philosophy, “we are wine growers, not winemakers” say Steve Dragonette, who coaxes the grapes to produce all they can to echo the characteristics of the individual varietal, clone and plot of land they come from. In their quest and commitment to produce only the best, Dragonette Cellars sources from the premier vineyards in the area. Fruit is purchased from vineyards such as Vogelzang and Grassini Family Vineyards (within the Happy Canyon AVA for their Sauvignon Blanc), Fiddlestix, John Sebastiano, Radian and Stolpman, among others. The dedication to quality, achieved through a devotion to the planted vine is paramount. First, the Dragonettes look for vineyards that are sustainably, bio dynamically and organically farmed. Once a plot is chosen, John and Brandon are hands on in the vineyards daily, making all vineyard decisions. They farm each row in every vineyard where the grape will eventually bear the Dragonette name. A visit to the tasting room, where Dragonette’s highly trained staff tours you through the current releases is a treat, both to the palate and to understanding the devotion that goes into making these small production ultra-premium wines. After a sip of Radian Pinot Noir, the MJM Syrah or any of these wines, you will instinctively understand their unique appeal. No shortcut is taken, no barrel is ever rushed to bottling. Buy the wines now to
enjoy with your favorite food, or lay them down to age. Either way, you will have a singular experience with each sip and each bottle produced by Steve, John and Brandon, for your enjoyment. As noted by Jeb Dunnuck in Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, “These are beautiful, distinctive and incredibly high quality wines across the board, and at the top end are some of the most impressive wines I was able to taste from Santa Barbara County.” (Issue #226: Aug 31, 2016) Visit Dragonette Cellars tasting room 11am-5pm daily at 2445 Alamo Pintado, Los Olivos. Zotovich Estate Vineyard & Winery Zotovich Estate Vineyard & Winery may be a small, family- run entity, but its handcrafted wines produce big results. Wine critic Antonio Galloni gave both Zotovich’s 2013 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay 93 points, with the 2013 Syrah receiving a 95. The road to success wasn’t easy however. Steve Zotovich said that he didn’t walk into a ready-made and profitable vineyard. When he first bought the vineyard in 2004, it needed a lot of work. “The weeds in the vineyard were taller than the vines,” he said. He removed a grove of eucalyptus, and made many other improvements. “We started out grassroots to get to where we are today,” Zotovich said. He credits his winemaking team with emphasizing the production of ‘serious wines’. The current winemaking focuses on showcasing the incredible quality of the grapes from Zotovich Vineyard and constantly striving for excellence. Ratings by

Los Alamos Martian Ranch Martian Ranch is the creation of Massachusetts native Nan Helgeland, who found her inspiration in the vineyards and wines of Santa Barbara County. After years searching for the perfect property, she purchased this 102-acre parcel on Alisos Canyon Road in 2006, and named it Martian Ranch – the combined childhood nickname of her two sons: Martin and Ian. While attending Hancock College, Nan decided to farm the ranch Biodynamically upon the combined counseling of Peter Sischel, her East Coast neighbor and Alfredo Koch, department head of viticulture and enology at Hancock where Nan attended. Both gentlemen farm their family vineyards Biodynamically in France and Argentina respectively. After three years of diligence and care, Martian Ranch & Vineyard became a Demeter Certified, Estate winery in 2015 with 20 acres of vines planted to 10 different grape varietals, each perfectly suited to the Mediterranean climate of the ranch. The vineyard was planted in 2008, with the first Estate vintage in 2011. Estate varietals are a combination of Rhone, Iberian, Beaujolais and a touch of Bordeaux. Albariño, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Clairette, Gamay Noir, Mourvèdre, Grenache Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Tempranillo —approximately 2 acres planted of each. Martian Ranch is known for carefully farmed, vibrant and lower-alcohol wines, with Eric Bolton at the helm as winemaker. Eric graduated Fresno State University as an Enology major with a minor in chemistry. He honed his skills throughout California and abroad, bringing a truly unique and diversified profile to the wines here at Martian Ranch. Biodynamic principles, which take organic farming to the next level, strive to create a diversified and balanced ecosystem while focusing on the health and fertility of the soil Being a closed system, the ranch grows its own livestock feed and is home to four

Buellton Buscador Winery Buscador Winery is more than a place to sample fine wines. It is designed to provide an experience. From a quick glance at Buscador’s website, you can get an idea of what the winery is all about. The front page features the motto Love Your Search, and the biographies of Team Buscador, including owner and winemaker Matt Kowalczyk, co-owner Stephanie Lopez, and their dog Lincoln, who prefers beer to wine, but takes what he can get. It emphasizes the point that winemaking at Buscador is about the entire experience.
A Name With Meaning The word buscador means “searcher” in Spanish. Kowalczyk spent a lot of his life traveling around the world, and found that the journey is more important than the destination and that everyone is on their own search. During a trip to San Pedro La Laguna in Guatemala he lived with a local family and spent many nights talking to the father in the family about philosophy. The father called Matt a buscador … the nickname stuck..
Foray Into Winemaking In 2005, after a lifetime of travel, Matt decided it was time to begin learning about winemaking. Barcelona was too cold so he headed to the Santa Ynez Valley. Now, 12 years later, Kowalczyk
has produced more than 30 Buscador wines. In keeping with the Buscador philosophy, each wine barrel holds truth and love as well as science.
One of a Kind Tasting Room Buscador’s tasting room, located in the evolving industrial portion of Buellton, opened in April of 2017. The winery and tasting room are located in the same space, offering unique opportunities. Visitors can taste the current offerings, while getting a glimpse of the barrels that will be released in the future. The setting is inviting and attractive. There is a mural on the wall that is worth a visit, and creates a wonderful backdrop for any picture. At this time, you can find Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Rose, SRH Pinot Noir, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon in the tasting room. Other wines Buscador is known for include the Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdoh, Syrah, Roussanne, and Chardonnay. Buscador is located at 140 Industrial Way in Buellton. The tasting room is open Friday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 805-242-5206 or visit www.buscadorwine.com. You can find them on Facebook.

Cholame Vineyard Wines Good ideas come when you least expect them. David DuBois went on a motorcycle trip with his friend through Paso Robles one day, and he took a winding road past cattle ranches, rows of oak trees and a few vineyards. He stopped at the Parkfield Café in the Cholame Valley for lunch. This experience gave him an idea. He thought this area would be the perfect place to plant his own vineyard.
harvested, he decided to begin making his own wines. He started at the Santa Ynez Winery, and then moved on to Fess Parker, where he began to receive accolades for his work. A 2003 Riesling received 14th in a worldwide competition held in Germany, a 2002 Petit Sirah received 92 points from Wine Enthusiast, and a Reserve Chardonnay was named Best in State during the 2006 California State Fair.
A Meaningful Name
Tasting Room
It isn’t by chance that DuBois named his vineyard Cholame (pronounced Sho-Lamb). It means the beautiful one in the Yokut language. DuBois’ memorable trip through the region had solidified his belief that this was the perfect place to grow wine grapes.
Cholame Vineyard’s new tasting room is located at 140 Industrial Way in Buellton. It is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call 805-610-1122 or visit their website at www.cholamevineyard.com. You can also find Cholame on Facebook at www. facebook.com/cholamevineyard/.
Experience in the Field With a background in horticulture, DuBois bought 75 acres of land in the relatively untouched Cholame Valley and started by planting vines on 10 of these acres. He started with Zinfandel, and soon went on to plant other varietals, including Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Tempranillo. Cholame Vineyard teamed up with Solvang local Winemaker, Andres Ibarra, who started his wine making career by learning the business from the ground up. He first worked at Brander Winery in Santa Ynez where he was involved in every aspect of the wine making process. He racked barrels, cleaned pumps, and did whatever else needed to be done. With a tagline of “Blending Wine with Philanthropy,” you know there’s something different about Carivintâs Winery in Solvang. The winery’s name comes from the Latin words Caritas and Vin. Caritas means charity/philanthropy, and Vin means wine, of course. Blend the two together and you get Carivintâs. The winery’s labels are all beautiful paintings of animals and other wildlife, and profits from sales as well as fundraising events are donated to various local and national animal rescue groups. But don’t let the beautiful labels and charitable aspects fool you; the wine is definitely the focus here. Over the years, the wines have collected many awards and the 2012 Merlot received 91 points and a Cellar Selection from Wine Enthusiast. Carivintâs welcomes “newbies” to the wine world and happily shares wine knowledge with their guests to educate them on the basics. A chalkboard tells the essentials—see, swirl, sniff, sip and savor. They diverge from traditional tasting rooms in everything from the unpretentious wine-speak to the amenities: there’s stools and chairs so you won’t have to stand, board and card games, and they always have dog treats and a kid area. “When we were planning the tasting room we asked ourselves ‘what has stopped us from going wine tasting in the past?’ It was that we had kids who would not sit still in a tasting room, or we couldn’t take our dog, or that it was stuffy,” says Fleet Hamilton, Owner and Winemaker. “We wanted a place where we would want to hang out.” Another unique feature you’ll notice are the games, videos and toys they have provided for children. Kids in a tasting room? Absolutely! Carivintâs doesn’t want the fact that you have children to stop you from having a good time, so they’ve provided the entertainment for them while you sip on some Merlot. So bring the kids and your furry friends and visit Carivintâs Winery, Monday through Friday 12:00 to 7:00 pm. and Saturday through Sunday 11:00 am through 7:00 pm, located at 476 First Street in downtown Solvang. Lions Peak Winery Make Mine Cabernet Sauvignon! When you step inside Lions Peak’s tasting room, in downtown Solvang, it becomes apparent that there is an artist expression that is connected with Lions Peak. A collection of library Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux Meritages and single varietal wines, which date back to their first commercial 1994 vintage, are on the wine racks, as well as their current releases. There is a rich history of awards to be seen from the most renowned wine competitions in California. Lions Peak’s 45-year-old historical boutique Estate Cabernet Sauvignon hillside vineyard is located in the Paso Robles AVA and is a spectacular sight to see! When asked, Jennifer Arant the owner, sommelier and winemaker, what makes Lions Peak’s Cabernet Sauvignon so special? She said, “The old vines are loved and nurtured. There is an eco-system that exists at this hillside vineyard. We are one with nature. We have a great vineyard, and the wine tells you this story!” LP specializes in Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Bordeaux blends and dessert wines. Jennifer is at the tasting room most weekends to talk about her wines and how the eclectic labels were designed and of how she entered the world of wine. If you are lucky, she will share her stories about the early years at Lions Peak, and offer her Southern hospitality to you by opening one of the library wines for you to experience the terroir and how special the vineyard is. The Lions Peak’s tasting room is located at 1659 Copenhagen Dr. Suite A, which is right in the heart of “little Denmark” and
cannot be missed with its authentic thatched roof! The interior of the tasting room is welcoming and cozy and is an artistic expression of Jennifer’s interior design background. Ventura County Herzog Wine Cellars A History of Excellence The story of Herzog Wine Cellars began in the mid 1800’s, when Phillip Herzog made wine for Emperor Franz Joseph of the Austro-Hungarian Court. The wines were so respected, that Phillip was made a baron. Generations later, after emigrating from Europe to New York and eventually California, the direct descendants of Baron Phillip Herzog continue the family legacy, producing an assortment of premium kosher wines that are today, sold worldwide. A visit to Herzog Wine Cellars, located in Oxnard, is indeed an experience in history, winemaking, gastronomy and is a total pleasure.
