Chainsaw artist sets to work on neighborhood icon

I

n April, Granite Bay resident Diane Jackson and her daughter were out shopping near Eureka Road when they saw the biggest lightning strike of their lives. Little did they know, the bolt had struck and killed a sequoia tree in their front yard, about four miles away in the Folsom Lake Estates neighborhood.

“People were really sorry to see it go,” Jackson says, talking to the Granite Bay View in June. “It was an iconic tree for the neighborhood. Even the (San Juan) water district down the road knew about it.”

Jackson says the water district came by

every so often to check on the tree, since it was perched atop a hill with houses below. At 140 feet tall and about 70 years old, the tree was young for a sequoia, which can grow to be over 300 feet and live for thousands of years.

“I just got thinking and said, ‘You know what? We need to do something about it,’” Jackson recalls. She and her husband called Glen Sievert, a Ukiah resident who uses chainsaws to carve tree stumps, after finding him online.

Sievert, 53, was raised in Humboldt County, the heart of redwood country.

But instead of logging trees, he decided to use his creative capacity and technical skills to make art out of them. In the 1970s, when a tree-carver in his community retired, Sievert picked up the man’s chainsaw, taking a whack at what would become his specialty.

Sievert has been doing this professionally since the 1980s, carving all manner of animals — dragons, raccoons, horses, eagles, et cetera — into old tree stumps left behind after a tree needs to be cut down.

Since California’s drought and bark beetle infestations have made it dangerous to leave certain trees standing, Sievert

says many people have been interested in tree carving as a way to memorialize those that need to come down.

Once a homeowner decides to remove a tree, he or she can call an arborist to do the technical work of removing limbs and large sections of the trunk. Rather than grinding down the stump, the arborists can leave it for people like Sievert to work with. In the case of the Jacksons’ sequoia, they had a stump seven feet tall in their yard until June 26, when Sievert set to work.

“Neighbors have been curious for the past few months, since it’s just been sitting here since April,” Jackson says. Three days after he started, the sculpture was complete.

When it comes to the cost of Sievert’s work, he says that’s a private conversation between him and the customer. He also says a project’s design is primarily motivated by the customer. Since this is California, most people go for bears.

Ultimately, Jackson and her husband decided to stick with tradition, having two bears carved into the stump of their old sequoia. They decided to add another touch, though, to commemorate the occasion: a lightning bolt.

BOATING 101: keeping local waterways clean

hether by kayak, sailboat or pontoon, this is the time of year to be on the water. State recreation agencies heighten their focus on boating safety in midsummer, but boaters also have a responsibility to keep waters free of invasive species and pollution.

According to Denise Peterson, boating safety manager for California State Parks, the state’s main invasive species conundrum is in California’s southern counties, where zebra and quagga mussels have colonized. They clog water supply systems and harm aquatic habitat by depleting oxygen.

Peterson says the mussels have not moved up toward Folsom Lake or the

American River, but it’s important to keep it that way by checking for the creatures after every outing, especially if the vessel has been in infested waters.

“You can’t always see mussels, but you can feel them,” she says. “If you run your hand over the boat, it feels like sandpaper.”

Peterson says mussels reproduce rapidly and on most surfaces, but they will die if they dry up. “‘Clean, drain and dry’ is the big mantra of responsible invasive-species management,” she says.

California boaters are required to purchase a quagga mussel sticker for their vessel if they intend to boat in freshwater.

The sticker is $8 and helps fund cleaning stations throughout the state.

“

Waterways in the Sacramento area are not free of troubles — local waterways harbor invasive plants like water hyacinth and Brazilian waterweed — but properly cleaning vessels can avoid spreading what’s already here.

To clean watercraft, including kayaks and canoes, Peterson recommends removing visible debris and anything felt on

the surface, hosing the vessel down, drying it off with a towel and leaving it to sit in the sun. She also says to drain any parts of the boat that may have taken in water, like the ballast.

James Cimino, a service manager at West Coast Boat Center in Rocklin, pointed out that cleaning a boat properly benefits the vessel as well as the environment.

“I always recommend customers keep boats dry,” he says. “When you pull up the boat, do a quick wipe-down of everything.

It’ll prolong the life of the boat, keeps it clean and it’s good boating practice.”

Cimino says a good cleaning should take about 15 minutes if there are multiple people helping wipe the boat down.

He recommends using non-deter-

gent-based cleaner. Peterson says biodegradable formulas are fine but not always necessary. The agency discourages use of regular soap, however, because it can be toxic to aquatic ecosystems.

Pollution is another issue to keep in mind while out on the water. Peterson mentioned the multitude of potential hazards a boat carries onboard: oil, gasoline, antifreeze, battery acid and sometimes human sewage.

Proper fueling technique can prevent pollution well before hitting the lake or river. Peterson recommends using a fuel bib or a towel to prevent loose fuel from running down the side of the boat, and to fill the tank to 90-percent capacity.

“Fuel will expand as it heats,” she says.

“If you’re out on a hot day with a full tank, as it expands with heat, fuel can vent overboard and you’ll have a spill on your hands.”

She also says that sometimes people will dump sewage overboard if they have a sanitation tank on their craft. “Dump at the pump” locations on shore provide a clean way for boaters to dispose of waste, versus putting it into their own drinking water.

In the event of a spill, causing a film or sheen on the water, boaters are required by federal law to report it and can call the California Office of Emergency Services.

at Esposito remembers the time he spied Mike Marjama standing beside an opposing team scouting report posted on a locker room bulletin board.

It was 2007, Marjama’s senior year at Granite Bay High School, and he was closing out a run as an infielder for the school’s baseball team. Esposito, Granite Bay’s coach, had gotten to know Marjama as a cerebral player and leader on the field. He spied Marjama writing something on tape on his wrist.

“I come up to Mike and I go, ‘Mike, what are you doing?’” Esposito said.

Marjama told him, “Oh, I’m just writing down where these guys all hit the ball mostly, so I can position the outfielders.”

“It was like having a coach on the field,” Esposito said.

The player who made the most of his brain is starting to shine as a professional, with 28-year-old Marjama appearing in the Triple-A All Star Game on July 12 as a catcher for the Durham Bulls, the top minor league affiliate for the Tampa Bay Rays. There’s a chance Marjama could even make his Major League Baseball debut before season’s end.

“

Marjama sits on the precipice of the majors after a long climb through prep, collegiate and minor league ball.

He began at Granite Bay as a 14-yearold middle infielder.

“We knew he was a good enough player to play, but Mike was a really small guy when he first got to Granite Bay High,” Esposito said. “He was so small that we had to put him at second base so he could make the throw to first base.”

Marjama grew to 6’ as a senior and stands 6’2” and 205 pounds today, according to Baseball-Reference.com.

continued from page 12 Still a raw prospect out of high school, he went to Sacramento City College where he redshirted and then played two seasons. He then earned a scholarship to Long Beach State, a perennial college baseball powerhouse.

In his only season for Long Beach in 2011, Marjama primarily played third base and hit .290 in 56 games, earning a 23rd round draft selection from the Chicago White Sox. The following year, he would convert to a catcher and show some flashes of promise at the plate.

But in four seasons in Chicago’s system, Marjama struggled to move beyond the low levels of the minors, topping out at high-A ball in 2014. The White Sox unloaded their prospect to Tampa Bay in a trade prior to the 2015 season for scant returns.

“Mike laughs about it,” friend and Granite Bay High assistant coach Mike Musolino said. “He goes, ‘You know, I got traded for a bucket of balls.’”

Liberated from Chicago’s system, Marjama quickly began to advance through the minors with Tampa’s affiliates, reaching Double-A in 2016 and Triple-A this year.

There’s a chance Marjama could make the majors in September, when MLB rosters expand from 25 players to 40, though Esposito said there might be some complications since Marjama isn’t on Tampa’s 40-man roster.

“When you’re not on the 40-man roster, they have to take someone off the 40man roster in order for you to come up,” Esposito said.

But Esposito’s hopeful for his former player.

“There’s plenty of guys that make the big leagues at 29 and 30 years old,” Esposito said.

Musolino, a former minor league catcher himself, is also hopeful.

“I think he’s got a great chance, being at that position,” Musolino said. “I was telling Pat earlier, there’s a bunch of older catchers that are going to be free agents in the next two or three years that are 33, 34, 35 now. They’ve all got to be replaced.”

Opportunities might be scarce in Tampa, where Wilson Ramos, an All Star with the Washington Nationals in 2016, re-

cently returned from ACL surgery. Ramos’ backup is Derek Norris, a former All Star with the Oakland Athletics.

Marjama, who will be a free agent after this season, is interested to see if he might be moved by the July 31 trade deadline.

“The next few weeks will definitely be a hectic time with the trade deadline coming up,” Marjama said.

He enjoyed his trip to Tacoma for the Triple-A All Star Game where he was joined by girlfriend Courtney and parents Greg and Kim Marjama of Granite Bay. His parents, it should be noted, are thrilled by everything that’s happened in Marjama’s career.

“Shoot, we just wanted him to get a college degree,” Kim Marjama said.

Their son enjoyed himself in Tampa, which included a Home Run Derby and pre-All Star Game luncheon.

“All the festivities were awesome,” Marjama said. “They put on a great thing.”

Marjama provided a solid showcase for visiting scouts as well. A fan selec-

tion along with teammate Willie Adonis, Marjama played the first four innings.

Though he went 0-for-2 at the plate with a strikeout, he made a sliding catch at the fence behind home plate off a high, first inning pop up.

“Every game he’s out there, he’s actually interviewing with all the other clubs as well,” Greg Marjama said. “You never know in professional baseball where it leads you.”

There could be another eventual career option as well for Marjama, one that his former Granite Bay coach Esposito could attest to.

“If Mike stays in the game of baseball, he should be a coach,” Esposito said.

Both professional organizations Marjama’s been affiliated with have already approached him about the possibility.

If only the guy writing on his wrist all those years ago at Granite Bay High could see his life now.

New hope at Sierra Pacific Great Pyrenees Rescue shelter

cross a dirt plot, amidst wandering housecats and fenced-in ponies, a booming bark cuts through the air. It comes from Goliath, a white dog that stands as high as an office desk and about as wide. From afar, he looks like a golden retriever mixed with a polar bear — fluffy but formidable.

Pam Tobin, who has run the Sierra Pacific Great Pyrenees Club shelter for 24 years, shushes him and opens the door to the kennel building. Woofs fill the space as white faces and paws press up against chain-link fences. Tobin knows each Pyr as if they’re her own pets, relaying their names and backstories.

Annie was severely neglected by her

previous owner, evidenced by her raw, red snout and her abdomen, far too thin for her frame. Kira came in with ruptured mammary tumors. Hunter’s time at a kill shelter was wearing thin. Gable kept watch over his dead owner for weeks before the rescue took him in. Yogi and BooBoo have been there a while — they were found together and have an inseparable bond, though BooBoo is a much smaller breed.

“We’ve taken in dogs that were beaten, stabbed, shot, burned ... there’s a lot of good out there, but there’s a lot of evil, too,” Tobin says. “It’s our job to scoop ‘em up, take care of them and give them the lives they should’ve always had.”

Working hard for second chances

The rescue partners with shelters near and far, including locations in Washington, Nevada and Oregon. The Pyrs are sometimes in rough shape coming in, but Tobin says everybody leaves fixed, microchipped, vaccinated and protected against heartworm. Their temperaments are tested soon after arrival to see if they’re fit for adoption, and it takes the dogs about a day to realize they’re away from whatever dangerous or desperate situation they came from.

From there, they become part of the family, living and healing in the kennel.

Day to day, the shelter gets moving around 5 a.m. and winds down around 10:30 p.m. Tobin’s husband, Jim, main-

tains the outdoor kennels while she handles the laundry, training, grooming and kennel cleaning. She also cooks roasted chicken for the dogs every day and administers their shots, having gained experience raising show dogs growing up.

This isn’t Tobin’s day job. She works as a local Realtor and serves on the San Juan Water Board, caring for the Pyrs in her off-time. The nonprofit’s operations are entirely volunteer-run and donation-driven. They raise money through the annual Big Day of Giving, grants, GoFundMe pages or fundraisers like a spaghetti dinner they held in April.

“Whatever isn’t raised, my husband and I contribute,” Tobin says.

Finding the perfect fit Though in separate kennels, the dogs coexist with the other animals, including free-roaming cats and small livestock outside. This is to see how they react, which helps Pat Sullivan decide what sort of home a dog should go to.

Sullivan is the rescue’s vetter, digging through applications and doing background research on prospective Pyr owners to make sure it’s a good situation for both dog and human — and stopping the process if it’s not going to work. For instance, despite a typical Pyr’s gentle nature, they don’t do well in homes with small children.

“They’re big dogs,” Tobin says. “They’ll

Other pets, living space, climate and personal preferences are also factors.

Adoption applications require references, a home visit and, if everything looks good, a contract outlining responsibilities between rescue, owner and dog.

continued from page 17 “We ask them to examine their lifestyle,” Sullivan says of prospective Pyr owners. “People think they can just bring these dogs home and they’ll blend into everything.”

The strict, thorough process isn’t meant to deter people from adopting a Great Pyrenees, but to make sure that when a dog goes to a new home, it’s for real. The breed transitions into new homes quite easily, according to Sullivan, but it has to be a good fit.

“It’s harder on the dog to bring them back after adoption,” Tobin says.

Pitching in for the Pyrs However, if someone wants a Great Pyrenees and isn’t eligible to adopt one from the rescue, there’s still hope: the shelter needs regular, committed volunteers willing to walk the dogs and help out with tasks around the facility. The dogs’ morning walk at 7 a.m. is too early for many people, Tobin says, but the need is there.

The need manifests in the form of white faces, fluffy tails, black noses and dark eyes that seem to know how someone is feeling before the person knows themselves, according to Tobin.

“They’re very soulful,” Sullivan says, glancing down at Gus, who is rolled on his back, posing for the camera, tongue lolling out. “There’s nothing like them.”

n Father’s Day a couple of months ago, local Realtor Linda Patmos was coming down Douglas Boulevard, headed back to her home in Hidden Lakes Estates, when she saw a plume of smoke rising in the east.

“You never think it’s your neighborhood,” she said. “I thought maybe it was Loomis, but then my husband called to tell me they had the street blocked off and I might not be able to get in.”

When she arrived back home, she saw that the house up in flames was not hers but another down the street. The two-story home was a total loss, but all the family members and pets made it out safely — though the cat took a while to track down, Patmos said. To protect their privacy, Patmos declined to give the family’s name or provide photos of the home.

On that triple-digit summer afternoon, seven local fire agencies responded to the blaze and it took about an hour to put out. Shortly after, the neighbors were gathering. They brought water, Gatorade, hugs and other kind gestures. Some neighbors offered the residents rooms to stay in if they needed to, Patmos said, though the family has been able to stay with relatives in the area.

“This neighborhood is very compassionate,” Patmos said. “I’ve never lived somewhere where it’s so friendly.”

The Father’s Day fire wasn’t the first time Patmos witnessed hospitality and sincerity in Hidden Lakes Estates. She

and her husband, Tom, moved in 22 years ago and they still remember when neighbors came over to greet them with gifts, brownies and helpful information about their new home. Now, the gifts are customary and rather than standard flowers-and-a-directory, residents customize the gift based on what they know about their new neighbors.

This openness among residents mani-

fests in the everyday, too. Patmos said many neighbors love to walk along the winding streets, sometimes with dogs, strollers or kids on bikes in tow. Sometimes they’re headed to Folsom Lake, taking a shortcut through Hidden Lakes Estates’ four-acre oak woodland. Other times, they may want to do some catch-and-release fishing in one of the community’s two small ponds.

continued from page 21 On special occasions, they could be walking or riding to one of the neighborhood’s several events: an Easter egg hunt, a holiday cookie exchange, Oktoberfest or the famed fall social, which has a different theme every year.

Residents also enjoy horseback riding, biking and stand-up paddleboarding, Patmos said. The homeowners’ guidelines prohibit boats, RVs and other “toys” from being visible from the street, but many residents enjoy these activities as well.

As far as other property regulations, Patmos said landscaping is relatively lax but many changes to houses have to be approved by a committee, whether a resident wishes to add a second story or paint the front door a different color. There are no sidewalks in the neighborhood and, though some homes have lanterns on pillars at the end of their driveway, no street lights either.

“It bothered me when I first got here,” Patmos said. “Now I love it. When the stars come out, it’s just beautiful.”

Granite Bay, established Hidden Lakes Estates in 1977. Some homes have the architecture of the day, in flat, long, single-story style homes. But the neighborhood has an interesting mix of styles that’s eclectic but tidy. Many homes incorporate brick in at least some small aspect, whether it’s the chimney, the driveway pillars or the porch. Wooden-shingled roofs, leaded windows and abundant rosebushes are common, too.

While many residents are busy with

keeping up their own yards — not to mention raising families and working full-time in education, tech, medicine, sales and other endeavors — Patmos said a few neighbors go above and beyond, taking on a project that benefits everyone.

For example, one resident cleans out both ponds, keeping them free of weeds and anything potentially harmful. Another maintains the median near the neighborhood’s entrance, which is landscaped and has a small bench for relaxing. After over two decades of living in Hidden Lakes Estates, Patmos still has not taken for granted the time, effort and kindness her neighbors give to one another.

“My clients always talk about how different it feels in here,” Patmos said. “I’ve never lived in a community like this before.”

Make a plan “Whether you plant directly in the ground or make a raised bed, you want the rows to be between 3 and 5 feet wide,” Duncan said. “You don’t walk to walk on them after you’ve prepared them. If you do skinny rows, you’ll have to walk in those. That compacts the soil and the roots will be squashed. Have a bed that’s wider and work around it and in the center. Four feet by eight feet beds are ideal for reaching.”

Raised beds or in-ground Raised beds have advantages and disadvantages. The soil will warm more quickly so you can plant earlier. But you’ll need to bring in soil.

A disadvantage is that you have to import soil and it has to be quality soil.

“Much of the soil (available on the market) has a lot of wood or sand in it,” she said. “If you have heavy clay or decomposed granite, work in the soil on top that’s friendlier.You’ll have a lighter soil that helps with drainage.”

Because they are above the ground, there are fewer drainage issues with raised beds. Raised beds are more expensive than planting directly in the ground.

10 Tips for a successful vegetable garden

t seems like magic — combine seeds, soil and water, add sunshine and in a few weeks you have a bounty of squash, tomatoes and peppers.

But it’s not quite that easy. A successful vegetable garden takes planning, preparation and patience, according to Placer County Master Gardener Nikki Duncan.

Duncan, a master gardener since 2009 and co-leader in the creation of the group’s demonstration garden at the DeWitt Center in North Auburn, offers the following 10 tips for ensuring gardening success whatever the time of year.

Prepare the soil Healthy soil is the foundation of the garden. Healthy soil will make healthy plants that will be able to fight off predators. For a summer garden, ideally that process begins in March for planting in May. “You don’t want the soil to be too soaking wet or bone dry,” Duncan said. “It must be gently moist.”

Remove weeds and rocks. Then add organic matter — compost or manure.

“You can use chicken manure or horse manure that has seasoned for a while,” she said. “You don’t want to use fresh manure. It is too caustic.”

You can add leaves and grass clippings from the yard — and let them compost right in the dirt.

4.

Irrigation The ideal irrigation method for a vegetable garden is a drip system with emitters 6 inches apart. “When the starts or seedlings are small, you’ll need to water a couple of times a day for a short period,” Duncan said. “As the roots get established and grow bigger, you’ll need to water longer and at longer intervals to get water down to the roots.”

Know the special needs of your plants.

Tomatoes have a hard time in the blasting afternoon sun — when the temperature soars above 90 degrees.

“Put a shade cloth over them,” Duncan said. “It’s a black woven fabric that blocks out part of the sun and keeps the vegetables from getting burned.”

Cucumbers need even watering. They don’t like to be wet and then dried out. Keep them evenly moist to ensure they won’t have a bitter taste.

Plant melons vertically up a trellis to prevent gopher damage.

Use panty hose of other light-weight fabric to create slings for the fruit.

“They will grow in a little sack,” she said.

Don’t limit yourself to the obvious.

There are some less conventional vegetables that do very well in foothill gardens. A good choice is edamame.

“The soybeans are very easy and fun to grow,” she said.

Interested in growing a grain? Try Millet or amaranth.

“They are very easy to grow and drought tolerant,” Duncan said.

Or plant mouse melon.

“They are tiny. They look like tiny watermelons — about two inches long,” she said. “They are adorable and quite tasty.”

Plant your garden for how much space you have, your favorite things and how many people you are trying to feed.

“If you have a small space for gardening, corn is not a good choice,” Duncan said. “You need enough plants that they pollinate well. You’ll want to stay away from things that take a lot of room such as melons and pumpkins.”

Plant flowers in the garden to attract pollinators.

Or ground cherries.

“They are husked like a tomatillo,” Duncan said.

“The ground cherry has a mild sweet flavor and is good in salads.”

Malabar spinach is another possibility.

“It’s a summer vine and has leaves you can eat like spinach or lettuce,” she said.

Rotate crops.

If you are going to have a garden year after year, you don’t want the same plant families in the same spot every year.

“What happens is the pests that like (those vegetable) will overwinter in the soil and be there next year,” she said.

Avoid fallow ground.

It’s not a good idea to leave bare soil. The rains will cause erosion, volatility and the soil will lose nitrogen.

“It’s important to always have something there,” Duncan said. “The roots keep the soil nice and loose. In the off season, use cover crops such as buckwheat. It grows quickly, flowers quickly and attracts beneficial insects and bees.”

Vegetable gardening is not just a summer endeavor. “(In the foothills), we can grow yearround,” she said. “We have three seasons – you can plant in the spring, in the summer and we have a fall-winter planting time.”

Local cardiologist saves thousands HO M ETOWN HER OES |

n this month’s edition of our Hometown Heroes series, I feature the story of local cardiologist Dr. Daniel Ebenezer. It’s easy to write these articles because there are so many awesome people among us, and one that has a special meaning to me and too many others is this hero of a man.

My acquaintance with him begins last month — July 4 to be exact! While everyone was preparing to celebrate our nation’s glorious Independence Day, I woke up ready for a backyard swim and barbecue event later that afternoon, and before my day started my wife asked me to take a morning walk with her.

This is something we do often around our neighborhood, and we enjoy the early morning time because it gets us out of the home before the heat hits. But this morning took a drastic and sudden change.

See, I hadn’t been feeling well for about a week. Shortness of breath, dizziness and other things were troubling me, but I just thought I was fighting off a bug or something. Moments later on the walk this feeling hit me hard again, but this time my wife witnessed it. She immediately got scared and told me, “We are going to emergency!”

After a quick ride in an ambulance, I found myself in the emergency room at Sutter Roseville. The staff began to work fast, per standard protocol when dealing with a 55-year-old man suffering from chest pains. Moments later, in walks Dr. Ebenezer.

I was scared and didn’t know what to expect, and the good doctor introduces himself to me and my family.

Several exams, EKGs and blood samples later, he returns and tells me that I am indeed suffering a heart attack and being admitted into the hospital. This is where Dr. Ebenezer skillfully and masterfully took over.

During my week in the hospital, I learned that Dr. Ebenezer is from India and obtained his medical degree from the University of Madras, in India in 1970, where he worked as an instructor of anatomy until 1973. He finished internal medicine residency at St. Johns Hospital in Detroit and his cardiology fellowship at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oaks, Michigan. He is board-certified in internal and cardiovascular medicine.

While living in Michigan and being from the warm climate of India, the young doctor and his family didn’t care for the cold winters and wanted to relocate to a warmer climate. With job offers from hospitals in Florida and California, in 1978 he relocated his family to Roseville, where he took up private practice with a direct clinical interest in the prevention of heart disease and the integration of alternative and contemporary medicine.

At the time, the hospital he practiced at was named Roseville Community Hospital, and over the years it morphed into the

massive facility we all know today as Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

Dr. Ebenezer took over my care 39 years after he relocated to this great community. I had the classic signs of a heart attack and from my preliminary tests he told me later he was assured that he would find a clogged artery or something Dr. Daniel else. He advised me of his plans to care Ebenezer for me which included an angiogram, CT scan and stress test. And never once did I not feel greatly cared for.

The staff at Sutter Roseville is second to none, from the nurses, to the x-ray imaging staff, housekeeping and even the food staff were top notch and caring. I never felt scared. I knew I was in good hands.

Dr. Ebenezer was amazing, caring, communicated often with me and family and went to work studying what was wrong with me.

They found no blockage in my artery, but they did find a small artery coming off one of my main arteries that might have been causing the unusual discomfort. Subsequent tests gave me an opportunity to get to know Dr. Ebenezer much better. He humbly estimated that he helped save over 2,000 lives since beginning his cardiology practice. When I heard that, I said, “You are a hero!” He just laughed.

For one of my tests I visited his office and saw a large sword leaning against his bookcase. I asked the kind doctor, “What’s the meaning of the sword?”

He explained that the sword was given to him by a heart attack victim. He said, “You might know him!” I asked, “Who is it?”

He replied, “Do you know Jeff Hilliard from Rocklin?

Do I know Jeff Hilliard? Jeff is a mountain of a man who I have known for more than five years. He operates a nonprofit out of Rocklin that supplies Bibles to the troops. In 2006 Jeff suffered a heart attack, and he told me in a later conversation that he believes Dr. Ebenezer saved his life. Jeff said, “This man saved my life and prayed for me when I needed it. I attribute my being alive today to Dr. Ebenezer!”

As a gift for his gratitude he gave Dr. Ebenezer that sword. Jeff told me, “The sword is a symbol of Dr. Ebenezer’s faith and the power of the sword of the spirit.”

Needless to Say Dr. Ebenezer easily qualifies as this month’s Hometown Hero.

Caring physicians like him live among us, and I hope to debut more of these people in future Hometown Heroes features.

As for me and my prognosis, all the tests came back negative and the doctor prescribed a changed diet, weight loss and less stress in my life. And I plan on sticking to this.

s I wrap up this series of articles highlighting professionals and families on a seniors’ care team, I’d like to look at a service that is near and dear to my heart: in-home care.

As the community relations director of BrightStar for nearly seven years, I’ve had the privilege of meeting seniors — and oftentimes their spouses, families and advocates — learning of their physical, cognitive and emotional challenges, then helping devise a plan for in-home care with a professional caregiver to meet their needs.

Some clients have needed a minimal amount of care to stay at home while others have needed much more. It is truly a blessing for me to help improve the quality of life for our clients, sometimes until they pass. So, let’s explore the benefits of in-home care.

HOME SWEET HOME According to AARP, 95 percent of Americans wish to remain in their homes forever. It’s a comfort to age in place with familiar surroundings, pets and neighbors. For those with vision impairment and dementia, even more so. For some, staying in their home with the help of a caregiver is also more affordable than a retirement community or assisted living.

WHAT IS IN-HOME CARE? Professional caregivers, certified nurse’s assistants (CNAs) and home health aides (HHAs) assist in your own home with a variety of non-medical activities of daily living (ADLs) including personal care such as bathing, dressing, continence care, toileting, transferring and ambulation as well as medication reminders, meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry and transportation for running errands/shopping and medical appointments.

A care plan is tailored to the client’s needs.

IS THIS HOME HEALTH CARE? After time in the hospital or rehab center, home health is often prescribed. This is a Medicare benefit that is designed to be shortterm, often including physical, occupational and speech therapy in addition to home health aide visits. These home visits are intended to move the patient toward independence and self/family-managed care and is usually covered by Medicare or medical insurance.

In-home care is custodial care and not reimbursed by Medicare.

Because of the challenges of being caregiver to both generations, they’ve been dubbed “The Sandwich Generation.” No baloney!

It’s a difficult balancing act. Hence the growing need for professional in-home care.

PRIVATE CAREGIVER VS. AGENCY Private caregivers can be found on Craigslist, bulletin boards and sometimes as a referral from a friend. Hiring privately is generally less expensive. It does mean, however, that you are the employer and responsible for screening, insurance, taxes and withholdings. On the flip side, agencies incur those expenses and are required to be licensed, provide bonding, have background checks and liability insurance. For the protection of the client, it is critical that the caregiver is covered by workman’s compensation insurance. Some agencies go even further with DMV checks, drug testing, first aid/CPR, skill assessments and third-party accreditation like joint commission accreditation. Agencies also have a variety of caregiver types to suit different personalities and staff to fill in for caregiver emergencies and time off.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK Before you call an agency or individual, know what your care needs are. Do you need non-medical care, or might there be medical needs? Companionship or hands-on care? How about special training in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or hospice care? Do you need a bilingual caregiver? Think about the hours you need help, if live-in or shift work is best. Determine if you want nursing oversight. Be sure to ask if there is an assessment fee, deposit and cancellation policy. Finally, when asking rates, see if there are premiums for nights, weekends and holidays.

WHO PAYS FOR THIS?

“MY KIDS WILL TAKE CARE OF ME”

Most in-home care is private pay, although many long-term care insurance policies cover in-home care, and veterans may qualify for the non-service connected benefit, aid and attendance. Bottom line, the average cost of in-home care is $25 to $28 an hour. In reality, hiring a bit of care might preserve a parent-child relationship and keep a senior at home where they want to be. After all, there is no place like home!

Adult children are often first in line to care for aging parents.

According to the National Family Caregivers Association, more than 50 million Americans a year provide care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend. Many of those are adult children, working and raising children of their own.

t’s no secret that the most dedicated fitness enthusiasts partake in the world of meal prepping, and many confess that this is the secret weapon behind their jaw-dropping body transformations. Meal prep is without a doubt one of the most reliable ways to consistently shed pounds, week after week.

What is meal prep? It is a method of batch cooking your meals once or twice a week, portioning meals into Tupperware and stacking it all conveniently in your fridge. Every meal and snack is pre-planned, pre-packed, and ready to be eaten on-the-go.

This method works for delivering major fat loss results for a multitude of reasons: • It eliminates mindless eating.

• It ensures that every bite is approved.

• It controls calorie and nutritional counts.

• It plans when the nutrients will be consumed.

In other words, every single factor is taken into consideration to produce optimal levels of fat burning and muscle toning. If results slow or reverse in a given week then the plan is reevaluated and tweaked until progress resumes.

How to get started… The thought of cooking all of your meals ahead of time probably sounds a little intimidating, but don’t worry, let’s break it down into seven simple, doable steps:

MEAL PREP STEP #1: OUTLINE A PLAN Before you ever step foot in the kitchen to start the process of cooking and packing your meals, it is important to get an overview plan of your needs. Having a professional help you with this portion of the process is key to making sure that you pack and eat exactly the nutrients and in the portions that will get you to your fat goals. Outline these key parts of your plan: How many meals will you eat each day? Most plans will include three main meals and three smaller snack meals.

What key nutrients will be included in each meal? For a program focused on losing fat and toning muscle, you will need each meal to be largely protein, with complex carbohydrates in the first three meals of the day and fiber included in the final four meals of the day.

What size will your meals be? This is where it’s important to have a professional help you outline the parameters of each meal to ensure that you are eating enough protein, fiber, fat and complex carbs. You should know in ounces how much protein to consume in each meal as well as a physical measurement for the complex carbs, fiber and fat.

MEAL PREP STEP #2: FIND PRE-MADE OPTIONS Let’s be honest, even if you love spending time in the kitchen,

it’s not practical to expect that you will make every component of your meal prep meals from scratch at home. This is where having a great deli in your local supermarket or having a couple of restaurants nearby to pick up some of your meal list from will make a huge time saving difference in your meal prep experience.

Look for these: • Roasted Chicken, Turkey or Pork • Cooked Brown Rice • Steamed Veggies

MEAL PREP STEP #3: CREATE A LIST OF RECIPES After you’ve crossed some of your food requirements off due to the convenience of your local deli or supermarket, it’s time to make a list of the items left to make. Find simple, wholesome recipes that will fill in the remaining gaps in your meal prep meals. Make a list of all the ingredients needed to make the recipes. Recipes like: • Sautéed veggies • Rolled oats • Slow cooker lean beef • Baked fish • Slow cooker chicken • Egg muffins • Baked sweet potato • Hard-boiled eggs

MEAL PREP STEP #4: GO SHOPPING Take your list of ingredients and your list of pre-made foods and get shopping! It can be very helpful to do a quick cleaning out of your fridge before your shopping trip, in order to free up room for the fresh items you’ll be purchasing. Also be sure to pick up containers for your prepped meals as well as cold packs and an insulated lunch bag if you don’t already have these items.

MEAL PREP STEP #5: START COOKING Take a couple of hours to cook the recipes on your list, as well as chopping any veggies for salads. Allow everything to cool before moving onto the next step.

MEAL PREP STEP #6: MEASURE AND PACK It’s time to create your daily meals assembly line! Line up your containers, pull out your food scale and find your measuring cups. Weigh, measure, and season each meal before stacking and placing in the fridge. You may find it helpful to group a day of meals together, in the order that you will eat them.

MEAL PREP STEP #7: GRAB-N-GO This may be the easiest step, in meal prep success, but it is the most important.

Remember to grab your meals at the start of your day and to pack with plenty of cold packs. If you fail to bring your meals with you then you won’t reap the benefit of all that effort that you put into creating the meals. A plastic fork and a stack of napkins is also good to remember!

Could you imagine a transition into adulthood with little to no family support? This is sometimes the unfortunate true story for our countries foster children who age out of the system. After turning just 18 years old, these at risk youth are launched into the real world. With little to no guidance or support, it is no wonder we have such heartbreaking statistics.

The odds are stacked against them.

When girls apply to live at The Taylor House, most of them have already endured more emotional stress than many of us will see in a lifetime. They arrive with little to no assets, limited direction, and many with only a dim light of hope.

At The Taylor House (located in Downtown Roseville), the girls are welcomed as family and are celebrated and provided with endless opportunities to succeed through life skills training, job assistance, college pathways and they learn many of the basic day to day adult responsibilities in a safe affordable home. The girls are encircled with support no matter where the road may lead them.

They say it takes a community to raise a child, and it does. Join us in giving our communities former foster youth the chance they deserve. Join us in

helping them reach their goals, follow their dreams and get an education.
