Sweet success at Scoops in Colfax

Although it has only been open since April 29, Scoops Ice Cream and Yogurt shop in Colfax has been voted Best of the Best in three categories in Colfax: Best Dessert, Best New Business and Best Ice Cream. Not a bad beginning for this sweet, frozen operation.

Tom and Nicky Wright own another Scoops located on Bell Road in Auburn. The owners’ daughter, Jessica Wright, is the general manager at the Colfax location.

“Our family has been in the ice cream business for 12 years,” she said. “It all started with my dad’s dream to own an ice cream truck — but instead, in 2005, he purchased a couple ice cream stores.”

After considering Colfax’s history and demographics, her family decided that what this town really needed was a place for families to go and have a “safe and tasty time.”

“We offer something for everyone,” Wright continued. “For example: The kids want ice cream, but the parents want an espresso or a hot snack … we have them covered.”

Scoops is not a franchise. Rather, it is a small, local, mom-andpop-type business that just has really delicious ice cream and treats.

“We care about the communities we are involved with,” Wright said.

“We try very hard to make each guest feel at home from the moment



In addition to its heaps of ice cream, frozen yogurt and soft serve flavors, Scoops offers hot and cold coffee drinks, smoothies, flatbread cheeseburgers, Benny’s Bagel Dogs, bulk candies, travel games and gifts.”

“I want to continue the work my parents have begun,” Wright said. “I want to be a part of developing our community’s youth into upstanding young people who go on to do great things. I enjoy seeing our crew years after they worked for us and hearing how our methods of training have helped to instill a strong work ethic, team work and responsibility for a bigger picture.”

The owners and all the employees at Scoops are excited about winning Best of the Best during their first year in this city.

Paul the tree Climber has ‘logging in his blood’

Paul Jones opened his business, Paul the Tree Climber, in August 2014.

“I feel like this profession chose me,” Jones said. “I come from a long line of loggers, so I feel it’s in my blood and I was destined to do it.” Whether it’s in his blood or just deep in his roots, it seems that working with trees has grown on Jones, earning him the title of Best of the Best.

Jones decided to start his business when no other job seemed to fit.

“I got sick of working for other companies that treated their employees poorly and I wanted to create jobs for others,” said Jones. “I feel our professionalism really sets us apart, all the way from our marketing to customer service and the way we execute each job.”

Colfax Mini Storage watches out for customer comfort and security

The Colfax Mini Storage managers are not only concerned with providing customers with the right storage unit but they also work to make them feel comfortable at the facility.

In the Colfax area since 1996, the company has a newly remodeled office that resembles a family living room. Customers are offered cold bottled water, candy and fresh coffee from a Keurig coffee bar, said Ada McMaster.

McMaster and her husband, Garrett, are on-site managers for the business.

Customers say that they like the facilities, the cleanliness and security, and most of all, the business’s friendly welcoming atmosphere, she said.

Her facility gets “high marks” from customers for cleanliness, maintenance upkeep, affordability and security, according to Ada McMaster.

Colfax Mini Storage offers long-term parking spaces and seven different sizes of units, ranging from 25 square feet (5 by 5) to 300 square feet (10 by 30).

An upgraded system provides property surveillance 365 days a year, 24 hours per day. The facility is completely fenced and

The McMasters drive through the facility and spot check both exterior and interior units throughout the day, McMaster said.

“Our goal is the safety and protection of our tenants and our tenant’s property,” she said.

In addition to rental units, the company stocks an inventory of products, including moving boxes, packing tape and locks.

They also loan a furniture dolly and a box cart to tenants for furniture moves.

Customer relations are one of their most important priorities, McMaster said.

“We strive to go above and beyond in many ways for our customers. They are the most important part of this business,” McMaster said. “We know that some situations can be less than perfect but our goal is to satisfy our tenants.”

Monte Vista Inn, a historic Dutch flat landmark Submitted

Built in 1929 by local craftsmen using native timber and stone, the Monte Vista Inn was designed as a “roadhouse” offering food and lodging to those traveling the winding two-lane Donner Summer route of Highway 40. Over the years, the inn underwent many changes: Lodging was phased out and the emphasis focused on food, beverage and fun.

The current ownership, involved since 1972, embarked on a long-range restoration and expansion plan. One of the primary goals to preserve the basic structure — the old charm — of the mountain house restaurant.

The addition, which incorporated the entire front overhang of the building and double the size of the dining area, was built of the same indigenous logs and rock as the original. The kitchen was also enlarged, remodeled and modernized to handle the increased seating capacity. Underlying these transformations was the goal of evolving from a coffee shop, 
