Within its diverse facilities, Strikes offers a smorgasbord of activities and programs. Customers can throw birthday parties for their kids or friends, watch live performances inside the Halftime Bar and Grill or participate in a bowling league, among several other options. Pegram said the activities provided are what sets Strikes apart from other bowling alleys. “We have something for everyone in the community, from families to singles to large corporations that can rent out the entire venue,” she said. “We have full-scale entertainment for all ages.” Established in 2006 and under Pegram’s ownership in 2011, Strikes Unlimited has about 90 employees between all its operations. She said
once again winning “Best Internet Provider” for the Placer Herald’s annual Best of the Best competition. Founded in 2003, Wave acquired Starstream Communications in 2007 and now provides residential nd business-class service in Rocklin, Lincoln, Loomis, Auburn, Colfax, West Sacramento, Dixon, Winters and Woodland, according to Jesse Gregory, Wave’s vice president of sales. The most valuable service that Wave offers is choice and control, Gregory said. For example, residential customers can subscribe to internet service without signing up for cable packages. “We allow our customers to choose from a variety of products and services that suit their needs before ours,” he said. For residential customers, specialty services include fast internet speeds and various levels of video service and equipment, such as high-definition digital video recorders, home phone service and bundled entertainment channels. Commercial customer services include small-business internet and phone,

her favorite part of running the business is being able to provide job opportunities and meet lots of fellow community members. It does cut in to her bowling time, though. “I’m like the hairdresser with a bad hairdo,” Pegram said. “My game’s not so good. I don’t have time to bowl.” The Best of the Best distinction isn’t a first for Strikes Unlimited — Pegram said they’ve won at least three times. But that doesn’t make the title any less flattering. “It means we’re doing our job and providing a great atmosphere for the community,” she said. “I thank the community members. We couldn’t be who we are without their support.”

WELLS FARGO ells Fargo Bank has existed W since 1852, and its history in Placer County was forged largely
by a 20-year-old bank agent who helped turn gold nuggets and bags of glitter dust into the foundation of a community. John Quincy Jackson was born Feb. 26, 1832 in Petersburg, Virginia. At the start of the Gold Rush h sought adventure by traveling to California by steamer, arriving in San Francisco in 1849. Three years later Wells, Fargo & Company named Jackson, at age 20, the operating agent for their express and banking office at 1584 Lincoln Way in Auburn. The branch was located where the Testa Building sits today. A number of books on Auburn’s early monthly shipments of gold dust that history have reported that Jackson could weigh as much as 750 pounds, was in charge of sending Wells Fargo amounting to some $200,000.
The shipments were sent so often that Jackson had to manage them in increments of 100 to 150 pounds

at a time. The job was tiring, with Jackson’s crew having to work all day and into the night. Besides handling local banking tasks, Jackson was also receiving, forwarding and shipping packages just about anywhere. Jackson’s job often left him working alone with large sums of cash and gold. Numerous accounts say his main line of security was a 120-pound Bullmastiff named Jack. In 1855 Jackson reportedly played an important role in keeping the great bank panic of that year from toppling Auburn. The trusted personality held down the fort by assuring his depositors that their money was in safe hands. If handling the banking offices was tough, Wells Fargo’s express men had it even tougher, especially in Placer County. Robberies were a

major threat, and the bank eventually established its own detective agency. Myron Angel’s book “The History of Placer County” mentions dozens of stage robberies during this era, with two of the most notorious routes for crime being the Foresthill to Auburn route, and Placerville to Auburn. Today, Wells Fargo is a banking empire around the globe; but its agents, riders and shotgun messengers in the early days of Placer County played an important role in making the company a success on the Western frontier.

Planning announced it would be joining downtown Roseville’s revitalization effort by relocating from Citrus Heights to Vernon Street and opening a full restaurant and event center there. The event center opened in December, the “105 Bistro” restaurant is forthcoming, and the business is once again among the Best of the Best in both Rocklin and Roseville. Owned by Randy and Lisa Peters, the company cooks for events as far away as San Francisco and Lake Tahoe, but draws most of its clientele from the South Placer area. “We liked what the city was doing with downtown Roseville, the redevelopment,” Lisa told the Press Tribune in December, adding that she and her husband had built a relationship with Chris Robles, the city’s economic development director. The couple said they purchased the building at 105 Vernon St. for approximately $840,000

and spent $3.25 million gutting and renovating it, as it had served in the 1940s and ‘50s as a Pontiac dealership. “I think we’ve done a great job of preserving some of the elements of this building,” Lisa said. In time, the space will feature a restaurant, 105 Bistro, as well what Lisa referred to as a “boutique event center.” “We kind of want to bring a little of downtown Sacramento to downtown Roseville,” Randy said. “What we’re going to bring to the community is being able to come to the property after doing yoga in the morning and say, ‘Let’s go over to the bistro,’ then they decide at two o’clock to have a glass of wine and all of a sudden they say ‘I’ve got to cook dinner’ and step into the deli section.”

CRAFT BEER VAULT n August 2015, beer connoisseur Brent Welburn Ienthusiasts was betting his new business in Rocklin that like him would just as soon have their favorites in one place. Following a few trial days with friends and family, Welburn opened Craft Beer Vault in a tucked-away corner outlet at 6508 Lonetree Blvd. It’s difficult to spot from the main road, but the establishment has a clean, open seating area within and a gated patio next to the fountains outside. Welburn thought it was a simple setting for a simple conceit — his own little distribution outlet for the region’s burgeoning beer culture. “What we do is, people come here and they can try a beer from a brewery, and if they like it, maybe they’ll go, ‘Oh, we’ll go to the brewery,’” he said. “So we want to help promote the local breweries, and stuff from out of the area that you’re not going to find anywhere around here.” Welburn said his 12 taps serve beers from six local craft breweries and another six from
He said an interest in craft brews took root in his youth, having bartended his way through college at a nightclub in San Jose, then bloomed when he moved to England with his wife. “We experienced all the beers over there. With Belgian purity laws and everything, they take beer very, very seriously,” he said. When he moved back to the states, Welburn guessed that the English model of neighborhood pubs wouldn’t work in a community like Rocklin, but a well-placed taproom might. He started looking for a location about a year ago, mainly in Roseville and Rocklin, and chose the outlet on Lonetree Boulevard for several reasons: its proximity to his home in Lincoln, Rocklin’s demographic, and most of all its surroundings — a growing neighborhood and commercial center with housing developments nearby and no other bars or taprooms within walking distance. Welburn said he wanted not necessarily a “pub” feel, or a bar that serves everything, but a
wider regional ones — not Sierra Nevada, which customers could get anywhere, but the varieties they might otherwise have to drive across city or county lines to find. Welburn’s selections came from visiting regional breweries and sampling them all, then making deals with brewers so he could serve his favorites at Craft Beer Vault.

local watering hole to which people would walk across the street or parking lot after work for a pint of their favorite local brew. “One of the best things about the business is having someone try a beer or style they normally would not order and when they really like it, it makes you smile,” he said. “Our main goal is to be a place where you can come relax, unwind, chat with friends and celebrate special moments, a neighborhood gathering place.” People who frequent the Lonetree shopping center can bring their own food from local restaurants if they want or try Craft Beer Vault’s new bar food menu. a fan base — enough of a fan base, in barely a year of operation, to be voted by Placer Herald readers among Rocklin’s Best of the Best. CEO Lucy Van Horn said she was moved to help her daughter, Jeni, open the business when Jeni’s passion for dance and teaching became apparent. Jeni started dancing at age 3, she has now been teaching for more than 10 years, and since they had both lived in Rocklin for 23 years, they thought it would be the perfect place to open a state-of-the-art dance studio. Lucy, a real estate broker and owner of the Van Horn Group by day, said she thought it was a good time to invest in her daughter’s passion and start a family business. Today she attributes their business’ success to a staff of genre-specific teachers and state-of-the-art resources: a sound system,

three large dance rooms, a student lounge, teachers’ lounge, and a lobby with monitors so parents can relax and watch their kids perform or practice. “We have set goals and guidelines for each upcoming year for our students. students, so we can focus specifically on each and every child’s development,” Lucy said. “Each child is unique and our staff is trained to focus on the individual needs of each student.” She said their goal is for students to focus less on “winning” than on development, techniques, teamwork, discipline and commitment, laboring diligently at what they
love. “We strongly encourage our students to attend master classes and events at other studios and conventions throughout the region to enhance their dance training and exposure,” she said. “We thrive on excellence, achievement, solidarity, and most importantly development of our dancers for the future, while still having fun!” Lucy said she and her daughter were “truly honored” to be recognized by Rocklinites after only one year in business. “We did not expect to win and owe it all to our amazing team!” she said. “Our staff and students are so excited and grateful for this award and very optimistic about the future.”

Located on Stanford Ranch Road in Rocklin, The Pizza Place is where owner Keith Nash has put his heart and soul, according to his wife, Shab Nash, and it’s where Placer Herald readers prefer to grab a slice: they voted it among Rocklin’s Best of the Best in 2017. First opened in 2007, The Pizza Place is, according to Shab, the joint where everybody knows your name, like the television show “Cheers.” Keith gets to know the regulars and sits down with them, she said, bonding with the customers and making people feel comfortable. Keith said the key to his successful pizza place is a good product. He makes the dough fresh daily, the meat lasagna is homemade, and the cinnamon, sugar sticks from scratch.

The first location of The Pizza Place opened in Auburn in May 2003. But Keith wanted to bring his work closer to home, so he opened an additional location and added more to the menu. The Rocklin establishment also does something special for kid’s birthday parties. Each child gets to make their own mini pizza, roll the dough, spread the sauce and dress it with their favorite toppings. “We’re having fun here,” Shab said. The shop also donates certificates to nearby high school pep rallies and supports many of the local community events. Shab and Keith believe that by selling a quality product, it will bring in satisfied and frequent customers. Apparently they’re right.

BROTHERS HOME IMPROVEMENT rothers Home Improvement came into Bbelonging the American business world as an idea to two siblings; and with two decades of ongoing success, it’s keeping its family factor as strong as ever. Fusing those family priorities into business paid off for Brothers with a 2017 Best of the Best win for being top provider of windows and doors. Brothers Home Improvement was started in 1996 by bothers Gene and Ralph Cavanna. It opened its Roseville location just two years later. According to Brothers employee Rocio Korver, the overall family dynamic has only grown since then. “The heart and soul of our business is driven by the strong passion and mutual goals of all nine brothers and sisters who manage Brothers,” she said. “Our strong family values and convictions, along with
our industry specialization, have helped Brothers thrive and grow into the reputable window-and-door company it is today.” Korver added that Brothers is still a true family business in real time. “There are a lot of family businesses out there, but few who have nine siblings actively running the day-to-day operations,” she noted. Brothers Home Improvement has grown its reputation by offering competitive pricing, quality installation, in-depth information for customers and an ongoing commitment to customer satisfaction. Mastering those elements of the business has kept Brothers getting return customers and a stream of referrals, which Korver said equals a saving that can be passed directly onto customers. “Referrals and returning customers continue to help us reach the volume levels we do without having to spend

huge sums on advertising, which in turn would make our pricing less competitive,” she explained. “It’s in our best interest to keep our customers happy. Our employees understand how important this is to us and our family business.” The same phenomenon has also helped Brothers Home Improvement avoid high-pressure sales techniques, instead relying on employee knowledge and a solid reputation to do most of the selling. “We believe in educating the consumer well so they can make good, sound choices for their homes,” Korver said. “When our customers are happy and satisfied, our business thrives.”

The husband and wife duo, doctors Paul Cater and Donna Galante, have become quite the time of orthodontists. They have been in practice together since the start of their marriage 22 years ago. “We always tell patients that they are getting two orthodontists for the price of one,” Galante said, “which is a huge benefit, because having two sets of eyes on each patient’s treatment is a great way to make sure nothing is overlooked.” As a family with children of their own, both understand the struggle orthodontics can impose on finances. Cater Galante offers affordable prices and various payment plan options. “We find the majority of patients and parents appreciate our payment options and our easyon-the-pocketbook fees,” Galante said.

Having a healthy and vibrant smile has an impact on quality of life, and some of Cater Galante’s clients from years ago have now started bringing their children to the practice. “We also offer … early interceptive orthodontic treatment that will often reduce or at least prevent major problems once the child is done growing,” Galante said. In addition to traditional braces, Cater Galante offers alternatives and corrections like Invisalign, retainers, sleep or snoring appliances, teeth-whitening, and limited orthodontic treatments for minor corrections. SCOTT GITTINS, EYECENTER OPTOMETRIC Scott Gittins, voted the Best of the Best optometrist for Dsionr.2017, leads a cutting-edge practice based on both compasand technology. Gittins graduated from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1991 and moved to the Rocklin area to join EYEcenter Optometric. He and his wife, Suzanne, and their six children live in the Lincoln area. EYEcenter doctors frequently do medical missions overseas, and Gittins has been to Nicaragua twice. He said it’s one of the most gratifying aspects of his practice. “In Nicaragua, an older woman asked me in Spanish if I had any bifocals. Unfortunately I did not, but I gave her a set of glasses for close reading and one for distance. She looked disappointed and walked away. She had her heart set on bifocals,” he said. “But 15 minutes later, she came back, beaming, and gave me a big sloppy hug, and said I had in fact given her what she needed.” Gittins has a special interest in helping people with Presbyopia, which makes it hard to focus close up (think reading restaurant menus) and generally affects people in their 40s. “Someone has had good vision all their life and never worn

glasses or contacts, and they reach 47 or so, and things have changed,” he said. Every patient is different, depending on their career and lifestyle, so Gittins works individually to find the best option, whether that means glasses or specialized contacts. The practice has invested in high-end technology, including a retinal imager that can reveal cross sections of the retina and detect a variety of diseases, including glaucoma, early on. Keeping up with the latest advancements is part of achieving Best of the Best accolades. So is having an excellent staff, said Gittins. What drives him? “I love being able to help people keep on doing things they really enjoy doing, even as their vision changes throughout life,” he said.
