What started out as Drew Bartlett’s college project grew into a passion to reinvent the way real estate is sold.

Bartlett owns One Nest Real Estate, a full-service company that offers flat-fee transactions.

The company opened for business in Lincoln in 2015.

One Nest Real Estate’s business model is based entirely on input Bartlett received from homeowners, he said.

“We asked homeowners, ‘What would the perfect home-selling experience look like for you? Give us your wish list,’” Bartlett said.

The homeowners said they wanted their Realtor to prepare their home for sale so they wouldn’t have to spend the time, money and effort. And they wanted to pay one flat fee rate not based on the size or selling price of their home.

“It made sense to us but we looked around and nobody else was doing it,” Bartlett said. “We took their wish-list and built One Nest from scratch. (As a result) we’re the only full-service, flat fee real estate company.”

Bartlett was surprised and grateful to learn his company had won the Best of the Best award.

“Surprised because we’re serving Lincoln alongside real estate companies that have been around for decades and we started this company two years ago,” Bartlett said. “Grateful because I have an amazing team that has the pleasure of serving awesome clients who feel compelled to recommend us to their friends, family and neighbors. That is a special feeling for any business owner. To all of you, I say thank you.”

Jenissa Gordon is the owner of Abbi’s and was raised in Lincoln. “I bought Abbi’s K-9 Grooming in the winter of 2009 when my 4th child was born. My goal at the time was to create a different type of grooming salon. What I didn’t realize was I had created a family within my community.

I feel so blessed that so many Lincoln residents and surrounding cities love and trust us with their beloved pets. I have been grooming for 21 years. Becoming a pet stylist takes not just love and skill but passion, patience, communication and understanding. We are so honored to be receiving this award again. Lisa Bolen has worked at Abbi’s for 8 and one-half years.

“When I got out of high school, I wanted to be a cosmetologist; however, it wasn’t the right fit. I started as a bather at my first salon. I knew this was for me and I got the same feeling when I began styling at Abbi’s K-9 Grooming. I feel proud to be a groomer in such a wonderful town and to work with some of my best friends. I’m truly blessed.”

Kathy Smith has been a groomer for 7 years and with Abbi’s for the last 6 months. “I love making dogs look and feel good. I’m caring, patient and gentle. I take the time to keep dogs comfortable throughout the grooming process, so that they have a positive grooming experience. My focus is on helping the dogs look adorable and feel good at the same time.”

Ginee Melohn, also known as “The Cat lover” is a longtime resident of Lincoln. “I have been grooming since the 1980’s; I love our community and I’m a strong supporter of Fieldhaven Feline Rescue since it opened. Animals have always been easier for me to get along with and you could say I’m an animal lover and not a people person. I strive to make your pet feel and look its best!”

Kenna Gordan is the owner’s daughter. “I’m a 15-year-old Sophomore at Lincoln High School and an active member in the FFA. This is my summer time job and I just love to be working and playing with animals.”

“I’m a sophomore at Lincoln High School. As a bather, I like learning about all the different breeds of dogs and getting to know their temperaments. I aspire to attend college and get my degree in nursing.”

When Janissa Gordon opened her award-winning pet grooming business in November 2006, she set out to please herself.

“I opened Abbi’s K-9 Grooming mainly because I could not keep a groomer for my Shihtzu, Abbi.

It turns out, I was the problem and needed to educate myself,” Gordon said.

After her personal experience with other groomers, Gordon decided that it was part of her job to educate her clients about their pets’ needs.

“At Abbi’s, we strive for an open line of communication between owner and groomer and an environment that looks at grooming from a dog’s perspective first,” Gordon said.

Employee Paula Neider agreed that Abbi’s “dog-centric” point of view is what makes their grooming salon successful.

“It’s about educating people about their dog,” Neider said.

Another element that contributes to Abbi’s success is having a happy staff, Gordon said.

“We have a wonderful group of ladies who work well together,” Gordon said. “There are so many good groomers in Lincoln but one of my goals was to create an environment that was like a family.”

As a testament to its success, Abbi’s K-9 Grooming has won nine Best of the Best awards.

“We feel honored and privileged to receive this award nine out of 11 years,” Gordon said. “With the help of the Lincoln community, we have realized a collective dream. Thank you to all our wonderful customers for supporting us and braving our parking lot.”

In the luxury hotel and spa business for more than 20 years, Smith joined the Lincoln Hills management team late last year.

What sets the business apart from other spas is the staff, according to Smith.

“We have many staff members who have been here (in Lincoln Hills) since the Spa opened in 2004. They’re experienced and dedicated to their service,” Smith said.

Winning the Best of the Best designation was rewarding, she said.

“The award says we’ve done our job,” Smith said.

The facility is open to the public and offers membership packages and monthly specials.

Beginning in September, the Spa will be open on Sundays.

Team work at Orchard Creek Lodge makes for award-winning service

When Kathy Cameron decided to make a career move, she sent her resume to what she considered the best facility in the Greater Sacramento area.

It took another four years to get the job as catering and events sales manager for the Orchard Creek Lodge at Sun City Lincoln Hills. She joined the company last September.

“When my wedding colleagues and I would compare local venues, we all felt that SCLHCA (Sun City Lincoln Hills) was the most beautiful and had the best group of professionals running it,” Cameron said.

The facility attracts good employees who stay on the job, according to Cameron.

The Orchard Creek Lodge “has been here 16 years now and our chef Ian (Elieff) has been here for 10 of those years and our banquet manager, Don (Giles), for seven years,” Cameron said.

“That kind of longevity is rare in this business, which speaks to our management’s team atmosphere.”

The staff’s shared vision of good service sets the Orchard Creek Lodge’s catering and events apart from others in the industry, Cameron said.



EDWARD JONES’ MARK SCHUMACHER helps others

Mark Schumacher became a financial advisor in order to help others.

Schumacher started working for Edward Jones in May 2008. After a few years of building the practice, he opened a Lincoln location on Twelve Bridges Drive in 2010.

“I joined this industry to help people reach their financial goals,” Schumacher said. “At a very young age, I saw the power of planning properly for the future and I knew I wanted to help others attain their goals.”

Schumacher enjoys working in and contributing to the community where he lives. He volunteers as a program coordinator for the Lincoln Kiwanis K-Kids Club, a children’s service organization, at Twelve Bridges Elementary School where his daughter attends.

“I knew that I wanted to work with people and have always had a passion for personal finance. Edward Jones afforded me the opportunity to open an office in the wonderful community where I live,” Schumacher said. “Being able to raise my three daughters in the same community I serve is important to me.”

Kaiser adding new medical offices in Roseville Messenger staff

With more than 10 million members and 600 medical offices in eight states, Kaiser Permanente is the largest managed-care organization in the United States. It is also regionally respected as a top health-care provider, winning a 2017 readership poll for Roseville’s Best of the Best.

It’s a big year for Kaiser Permanente in Roseville, as the company is building a new medical office building this summer.

The 210,000-square-foot state-of-the-art medical office building, to be located at 1001 Riverside Avenue, will replace Kaiser’s existing 90,000-square-foot Roseville medical offices.

Roseville City Councilwoman Bonnie Gore, who works by day as community and government relations manager for Kaiser, said the

purpose of the new facility would be to have more health care providers on-site.

Jeff Collins, senior vice president and area manager for Kaiser Permanente Roseville, has said the old offices will stay open while construction is underway.

“The new medical office, which will better serve our fast growing membership in Roseville and Placer County, is expected to take a little over two years to complete once all necessary approvals are secured,” he said.

As a child, Joseph Hobbs’ goal was to become a doctor. After high school graduation, Hobbs joined the United States Air Force and served as a medic for 11 years.

In 1991, he was accepted into the Air Force’s physician assistants school and in 1993, Hobbs graduated as a physician assistant.

FieldHaven Marketplace has something for everyone

When it comes to fundraising for a worthy cause, FieldHaven Marketplace presents a creative twist.

“Thrift stores are common. But at FieldHaven, just as with all our programs, we always do go the extra mile, add a different twist that differentiates us from others,” said Joy Smith, executive director of FieldHaven Feline Center and FieldHaven Marketplace.

FieldHaven Feline Center opened its doors in 2003, and 10 years later, the nonprofit cat rescue group opened Snap it Up (Thrift Store) to raise funds to support its rescue facility. FieldHaven Marketplace opened in 2015 and merged with Snap it Up in January 2017, according to Smith.

Many charitable organizations have found success in operating thrift stores as a way to raise funds for program expenses, Smith said.

“As a private nonprofit, community-based organization, FieldHaven Feline Center needs to generate as much funding as possible to support our operations,” Smith said.

FieldHaven Marketplace offers more than thrift store bargains.

“Donors can deduct the donation of their items from their taxes, 

FieldHaven’s cost of inventory is nothing and others can purchase great items at a low cost,” Smith said.

FieldHaven Marketplace also serves as a community center for people and their pets.

The facility offers monthly low-cost vaccines and microchip clinics; the Pet Food Pantry distributes free pet food to residents in need and hosts classes on pet care.

“People can stop in anytime to get information, have a stray cat scanned for a micro-chip, learn about TNR (trap-neuter-return) or anything else ‘cat,’” Smith said.

Smith is proud to have won the Best of the Best.

Awful Annie’s wins Best of the Best for breakfast and lunch

On an annual visit to the Auburn area in 1991, Don and Jai Baker stopped at the Awful Annie’s Restaurant for lunch.

“We were so charmed by the place that we asked the owner if she’d like to sell. She surprised us by saying that, ‘Yes, as a matter of fact, I do.’ Since owning a restaurant had always intrigued me, we started negotiations and in a short time Annie’s was ours,” Jai Baker said.

Due to the success of their Auburn location, the Bakers decided to open a second Awful Annie’s restaurant in Lincoln in 2004, according to Don Baker.

“We visited and considered many other cities in the Placer County area. However, Lincoln had a similar charm that reminded us of Auburn,” Don Baker said. “The town of Lincoln presented a perfect fit to add another restaurant location.”

“Jai worked as both a server and a restaurant manager and participated in the International Chili cook-off team in the late 1980s,” Don Baker said. “The experiences inspired her to want to own her own restaurant business.”

Winning the Best of the Best for both breakfast and lunch was special to him and Jai, he

said.

What sets their restaurants apart from others is partly due to the talents and loyalty of their staff, Don Baker said.

“Our son, Bryan, manages all aspects of the Lincoln location and has done an amazing job orchestrating our staff,” he said.

Bryan Baker is “hands-on” in the restaurant’s everyday operations, Don Baker said, from training staff to taking food and drink orders and arranging shift schedules.

“Our staff has been with us for many years and they work seamlessly with each other to ensure that our patrons receive the best-quality food and service possible,” Don Baker said.

Scott Ruskauff’s love of vehicle maintenance was born of necessity but soon became one of the joys of his life.

At 13, Ruskauff, the owner of Back to Life Smog, made point gap and timing chain adjustments on a Honda ATV (all terrain vehicle).

“My mom and dad’s vehicles were always broken down because they couldn’t afford to fix them so I started doing it for them,” Ruskauff said.

In the automotive service and repair business for more than 28 years, Ruskauff enjoys the challenge of trouble-shooting vehicle problems.

For example, a customer had taken his Nissan to four different shops before bringing it to Ruskauff.

“He was told his car had an alternator problem — it had gone through four alternators. But I traced the problem to the battery,” Ruskauff said.

Dr. Brian Crawford is hooked on transforming smiles.

As a specialist in orthodontic care for children and adults, he enjoys getting to know patients and watching orthodontics make a difference in their lives.

“Orthodontics can help improve a child’s self-esteem,” he said. “It’s my favorite part (of the business) seeing my patients, especially kids, transform over time.”

Crawford opened his office near Twelve Bridges Drive in 2008.

An orthodontic specialist for more than 12 years, Crawford offers a variety of products such as traditional metal braces, complimentary tooth-colored braces, clear braces, Invisalign “invisible” braces for adults and teens, retainers and night-guards.

“We also have a digital impression scanner that uses a camera and reduces the need for messy impressions,” the dentist said.

Patients say they like the practice’s high quality customer service, according to Crawford.

In order to accommodate patients, Crawford offers flexible payment plans, a comfortable waiting room and longer office hours.

“We bend over backwards to try to accommodate and please,” Crawford said. “Our flexible payment options take away financial barriers to patients getting the treatment they need and want. My team and I really care for our patients and their families.”

Crawford fosters a “no rushed atmosphere,” taking extra time to ensure that patients understand their options for treatment.

The office features waiting-room entertainment such as a Play station, X-Box and iPods, according to the website.

Open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on most days, the practice works to make appointments convenient for busy patients, Crawford said.

“I want to provide patients high-quality dentistry in a caring and friendly environment,” Espiritu said.

The dentist has been serving Lincoln patients since 2006.
