The art of training your brain Increase cognitive ability with these creative activities
By Alison Elsner For DMHN In the 2014 movie “Lucy”, there was a famous line stating that humans use only 10% of their brains. This is a myth that has persisted since the early 1900’s. Scientists tell us that, in fact, we do use 100% of our brains, and research now indicates that new experiences can trigger productivity changes in the brain within just a few days. Learning new skills leads to increased cell growth and more rapid firing of neurons. In short, the brain becomes rewired, leading to physical, chemical and functional alterations that posi-
tively improve cognitive awareness and help keep us mentally active, especially as we age. One of the most effective ways to increase the brain’s plasticity is far and away learning any new thought process or activity that extends beyond our usual comfort zone, like art or performing. Here are some activities that are not only fun and social, but also will make those brain cells very happy: Painting and Drawing at Desert Art Center: Every single day of the week, there’s a different type of painting or drawing class offered at this all-encompassing art compound. On
Mondays from 9am to 12pm, it’s Modern Abstract Acrylic Painting with Julianna Poldi. Workshops are available for beginner to advanced students, and materials are provided (canvas extra). Private, couple or group classes are all available. On Wednesdays, from 1pm to 4pm, Painting in Oil/Acrylics with Jessica Schiffman is offered. Jessica has a BFA in painting and teaches a step by step system to help solve visual challenges. Still-life subjects are supplied, or class members can paint their own subject. All levels are welcome, and materials are supplied for a modest fee. On Sunday, also from 9am to 12pm,
Life Drawing with David Fairrington is presented. This class will have both nude and clothed models. Drawing from the “inside out” will be taught to achieve more volume and depth in drawings and paintings in a variety of mediums. Line work and capturing drama in the drawing are emphasized. Classes are $30 - $35 per session or $120 - $140 for four sessions. Participants must register for each class directly through the instructor, with contact information on the DAC’s website.
