‘A Thinkers Course’

Wickenburg Country Club open to public +LJK ULVN KLJK UHZDUG ÂŤ RU D ´WKLQNHU¡V FRXUVH Âľ Those are two simple descriptions of the member-owned 18-hole public golf course at Wickenburg Country Club. A deceptive 6,320-yard (from the back tees) par-71 course, :LFNHQEXUJ &RXQWU\ &OXE DQG 5LQJR¡V UHVWDXUDQW RQ WKH ZHVW side of Wickenburg has been a popular scenic attraction for the past eight years – but a golf course at that location actually has been open to the public for 65 years. Lease-holder Richard Ringwood converted the previous nine-hole course into 18, built an entirely new clubhouse and restaurant; and started a 50-acre residential project in 2006. (Unfortunately, the real estate market collapsed just after 5LQJZRRG¡V SXUFKDVH VR RQO\ WZR XQRFFXSLHG KRPHV DUH located on the 118-lot acreage). That interrupted real estate development can be seen along holes two through seven on the front side. Prior to the renovation, one member of the Country Club wished at that time the nine-hole course – especially the greens – had some character (with some contoured greens and some challenging approach shots). Well, his wish came true with the expansion.

So not only did the makeover of the entire Country Club area provide a fun new championship course for experienced players and beginners alike, but the incredible desert scenery throughout the course was preserved – with WickenEXUJ¡V IDPRXV UROOLQJ GHVHUW KLOOV GRWWHG ZLWK FXVWRP KRPHV appropriately spaced throughout, and the Weaver Mountains in the background. The following is what a newcomer will experience when visiting/playing Wickenburg Country Club – from the perspective of a long-time member of Wickenburg Country Club. Hole No. 1 (Par 4, 285 yards) -- Simple straight fairway, but steer clear of the seemingly harmless palm tree that lingers on the left front of the green. Plus, the large mature tree on the right can be a problem for slicers off the tee. Then the undulating green can make for interesting putting. A day in Yarnell is an opportunity to shop for antiques, eat at a local diner and breathe mountain air.

quiet time at the comfortable local library or take a hike and enjoy the unusual and beautiful terrain. Yarnell has a lovely shrine nestled in picturesque boulders and oak trees, created more than 75 years ago by Catholic devotees, and a nearby grotto created by the builder of the Tovrea Castle in Phoenix, who lived in Yarnell for years. Both welcome visitors. To arrive in Yarnell on Highway 89, heading north from Wickenburg, travelers gain altitude in a sweeping series of curves. Popular with motorcyclists, this ascent up Yarnell Hill is also an excellent vista for photographers. Highway 89 is split, and the downhill stretch follows the path of the original highway between Prescott and Phoenix. The curves are sharper going down, but a lookout point allows drivers a place to stop and take in a panorama of the beautiful Sonoran desert some 2,000 feet below. Catch this point at sunset or sunrise to add an expanded palette of colors to the sky and land that delights the eyes. And keep an eye out for the famed White Elephant Curve. For decades this 90-plus-degree turn has featured a white elephant painted on the vertical rock face. Attempts in the past to rid the corner of the elephant by painting over it with earth tones have been thwarted when, mysteriously, a white elephant always quickly reappears. At an elevation of nearly 5,000 feet, Yarnell enjoys cooler temperatures and fresh mountain air. Head on up for a friendly visit! 2014-2015

Local businesses go all out with everything from floats to fiesta dancers. Shriners turn out in droves with funny cars, clowns and bands. The fun goes on for a couple of hours. Meanwhile, arts and crafts booths fill the lawn of the library and community center, and the Wickenburg Art Club holds a show and sale. First-time Desert Caballeros rider reflects on uniquely Wickenburg experience The Desert Caballeros or DC Ride, a men-only by-invitation trail ride held in April each year, is composed of six groups of men – called camps. Camp sizes vary but the writer of this article is from a mostly local Wickenburg camp called the Honkers. (The genesis of that name is reserved for another article). Last year was Geo Truppi’s ďŹ rst year on the ride -- hence he is called a “greenie.â€? Here are Geo’s thoughts on his experience. It’s difďŹ cult to predict where our paths in life will take us. Who would have guessed that I would have the great fortune of being a Desert Caballeros rider (gentleman) of the desert, a rider becoming one with your horse, your partner on a journey of a lifetime in the mountains hovering north of the western life of Wickenburg, Ariz. What an honor to be part of the tradition that began 68 years ago, the year of my birth. Who would’ve thought that being born in the urban conďŹ nes of the Bronx, raised in New Jersey, would someday bring me following the trails of historic cowboys, miners, homesteaders, ranchers and Native Americans who came before me? The previous year as I watched with so many others in downtown Wickenburg, the parade of horses and Caballeros riding through town, the passion inside of me convinced me I had to be part of this celebration of horse and rider someday. My friend and neighbor Mike Parrish was part of that ride, and he must have seen my eyes shine with desire as he rode by on

his ďŹ rst DC Ride. Through Mike, I was on the ride of a lifetime, a ride and experience that is truly difďŹ cult to explain to those who haven’t been there. Once you place your feet in those stirrups and proceed with your compadres on a journey of fun, friendship, stories and passion, do you realize you are on an adventure of a Westerners dream. We all do it for the “love of the ride,â€? but for me it is also the love of adventure, the love of horsemanship, becoming one with your horse, and riding on trails through a beautiful landscape that brings solace to the soul. In my lifetime, I have great memories of events and adventures that have fulďŹ lled my life. The DC Ride compares in so many ways to many of my personal experiences, especially the bonding and camaraderie of so many people from all over the world. As an Army veteran of Vietnam, my bond with fellow veterans is as strong as ever, with our friendship and experiences that we veterans can only share. As a re-enactor on the Lewis and Clark trail for two years portraying George Drouillard (the No. 1 hunter on the expedition, with my wife Jan portraying Sacakawea), we bonded with so many of our fellow re-enactors from all over the country with friendships that last a lifetime. The DC Ride is similar to those experiences as the bond and friendship captures much of the excitement of being part of this great tradition. And being an outďŹ tter and guide in Idaho’s wilderness for many years, I understand the importance of the bond between man and his horse and appreciate the work and planning of those who packed those mules each day preceding us on the trail so we can indulge in the much needed drinks after being in the hot sun on the trail for hours at a time.

I am proud to be part of this organization continuing the tradition of those who started this ride in 1947. It’s an honor to be part of so many men who have participated for so many years: 10, 20, 30, even 50 years, men who accepted me as one of them even as a “greenie.” There is no way to write or express to others what the DC Ride experience is all about until you yourself ride the trail with your companions, breathing the Arizona air in the beautiful mountain atmosphere. There is no possible way to explain the appreciation of the wranglers as you ride in to camp and they take care and charge of your horse so you can relax in camp after a long day on the trail. And how can one explain the work of our camp, “the Honkers,” bat boy who has our camp set up when we arrive, bar and hors d’oeuvres ready for us as we stumble in on aching legs and butts. Then there’s the caterer who provides us with one feast after the next so we can relax and enjoy friendship and events of the day. Each day ending around the campfire enjoying the new friends, bonding with so many, listening to the embellished stories, all in good fun before calling it a night. I hope to continue riding alongside my fellow caballeros Mike Parrish and Tony Clark (another greenie) where at times I felt like we were the three

amigos. I am treasuring this year’s memories with great anticipation of creating new memories each year to come. This was my first year and a new tradition on the ride, raising and lowering the colors during day in camp. To me, this expresses the patriotism of being an American, proud to be a veteran, and expresses the freedoms we have to be able to con-

tinue the tradition. Raising the flag honors those who fought and died so we can be free to ride the trails of Arizona and anywhere else in America, so we can be free to enjoy “the love of the ride.” Thanks for the ride! The 69th Annual DC Ride in 2015 that starts and concludes in downtown Wickenburg is scheduled for April 13-17.
