SPECIAL FEATURE Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club

Photos by Kevin Cloe

Wickenburg Ranch Golf and Social Club is located a few minutes northwest of Wickenburg on US 93.

Third quality course now open in Wickenburg By Kevin Cloe There are now three quality golf courses in Wickenburg. Wickenburg Ranch and Social Club officially opened to the public in February of 2015 and has been extraordinarily busy from day one, with exceptional reviews by those who have played the course. Located on the northwest end of the Town of Wickenburg in the new Shea Homes Trilogy at Wickenburg Ranch residential subdivision, the course was actually designed and constructed more than seven years ago and was maintained without public play until the subdivision opened. The Par-71 and 7,050-yard (from the back tees) picturesque course had drawn more than 10,000 golfers in the first seven months – mostly visiting Wickenburg from the Phoenix area. Some have already publicly expressed their high praise in visiting Wickenburg and playing the course. The intentional spacing of the golfers at 12-minute tee time intervals allows participants to enjoy the scenery as Pg 26

well as the well-manicured course with forgiving fairways and true-roll bent-grass greens. And the views … wow! “Scenery of the Sonoran Desert is breathtaking,” noted one golfer on the golf course review website golfadvisor. com. “You will not find a better golf experience for the money.” “This is an ideal piece of property for a superb desert golf experience,” said Bill Brownlee, founding partner of the M3 Companies, which developed the residential subdivision, and course design partner of noted landscape architect Wendell Pickett. “It has tremendous natural movement, incredible long-range views, and spectacular land forms and features.” Each hole has been given colorful Southwestern names to describe the design and possible challenges: Hole No.-Name-Distance (Par) 1-Giddy Up-386 (4) 2-Dynamite-153 (3) 3-Old No. 7-334 (4) 4-Cecil’s Pond-160 (3)

Wow, the views! Take, for instance, No. 1 – a Par 4 that snakes around the back of the model homes constructed to give potential buyers a sampling of the unique home styles. Throughout the course, construction of new homes is under way – demonstrating the potential of the future community. Then there’s No. 4 – One of the four holes with spectacular water/lake features, and make sure to clear the deceptive hill in front of the green that slopes into the lake. Then comes No. 13 as the most photogenic of the water holes, and No. 14 with the magnificent step waterfalls that hug the left side of the descending fairway. As golfers head for “home” to No. 18, the expansive fairways in the foreground frame the incredible view of the desert below and Wickenburg’s famous Vulture Peak in the background. We did mention the views, didn’t we? Wow! “Best course I have played in the valley and I have played a lot of them,” noted another participating fan of the course on Golf Advisor. “Incredible practice facility. You will not find a weed or a blade of grass out of place anywhere on the course. The greens are receptive, true and fast. The fairways are pristine. The staff was amazing as well.” Yes, the golf course itself closely rivals the views as the most memorable of the experience at Wickenburg Ranch. The challenge of No. 9 – identified simply as the “Big Hill” but described by golfers as “Mt. Everest” – is one of the more challenging holes on the course. Surprisingly, it is noted as only the No. 3 handicap hole on the course. But the view at the top is astonishing. The rest of the course, though, allows plenty of space in the fairways for even below-average players. And if shots go awry, the desert surrounding each fairway is incredibly “clean” through regular maintenance. “Simply put, in my 67 years of playing the most wonderful, frustrating game ever invented, I have never had a more enjoyable round,” noted another Golf Advisor contributor. “The condition of the course was the finest I Fall 2015

have ever seen … and I’ve seen and played well over 300 courses in my life … and it is challenging without being tricked up or made overly difficult.” The greens – described as “imaginative” – might be challenging and faster than expected … but not unreasonable. “Definitely walk to all sides of ball before putting,” advised another visitor to the course. “Best greens in Arizona. Perfect roll and very speedy.” Green fees are unexpectedly reasonable for the quality of the course. They include golf cart, practice balls, a Travis Mathew polo shirt and Travis Mathew over-piece (while supplies last) at just $95 for Wickenburg residents $105 for Arizona residents, and $135 for out-of-state visitors (after Sept. 28). The course has been so popular that tee times are required 15 to 30 days in advance, and tee times are accepted Tuesday through Sunday (after Sept. 28). To schedule tee times or for additional information, call (480) 367-3710. Oh … and the other two quality 18-hole courses in Wickenburg (featured in earlier editions of Destination Wickenburg) include Los Caballeros Golf Club (Par 72/7,020 yards) and Wickenburg Country Club (Par 71/6,320 yards) – both open to public play with unique views of their own and each with its own impressive characteristics.

Wickenburg Ranch tees times are spaced for leisurely play.

River preserve offers refreshing oasis By Patti Slattery As much as folks love the Wickenburg area, even the most hardcore desert dweller will admit it gets mighty hot in the high Sonoran desert. But there is an oasis around here, where – even in the hottest summer months – it’s a bit cooler. It is the Hassayampa River Preserve. The preserve, located three miles south of Wickenburg on US 60, was created in 1987 to protect a forest of rare desert cottonwood and willow trees and the critters that abide there, along the banks of the Hassayampa River. In addition to a large variety of animals, WKHUH DUH PRUH WKDQ VSHFLHV RI ELUGV WKDW à RFN WR WKH SUHVHUYH as a lush retreat. The preserve is a cool reprieve, especially in morning hours. Once a visitor begins along one of the trails, either toward the river or around Palm Lake, the temperature feels noticeably cooler, thanks to dense foliage, tall trees that shade the walking paths and nearby water. In addition to providing walking and hiking opportunities, the preserve offers a variety of programs, including educational bird walks led by master birders and fun projects for little enthusiasts. The Nature Ranger program invites children to gather once a month to learn about local animals, plants and the environment.

The history of the preserve is as intriguing as the preserve itself. In the late 1800s it was the Brill Ranch, believed to be the locaWLRQ RI WKH Ă€ UVW IUXLW RUFKDUG LQ $UL]RQD 7KH SURSHUW\ EHFDPH :LFNHQEXUJ¡V Ă€ UVW GXGH UDQFK LQ named “The Garden of Allah,â€? after a book popular during that WLPH ,W ZDV DOVR D WUDLQ VWDWLRQ ² D Ă DJ VWRS ² PHDQLQJ WKH WUDLQ RQO\ VWRSSHG LI D Ă DJ ZDV SXW LQ SODFH WR OHW WKH HQJLQHHU NQRZ LI someone was coming or going. In the early 1930s, the property was purchased by Alden Thomas of the Quaker Oats company, and it was operated as the Lazy R.C. Ranch for several years before it became a trailer park in the 1960s. In 1986, the Nature Conservancy discovered the property and realized its biological value. After a year of cleaning the land up and building trails, the river preserve was open to the public. Today, the river preserve has developed exciting programs for older children and adults in partnership with the Town of Wickenburg, the Bureau of Land Management and Maricopa County Parks. More than a reprieve, the Hassayampa River Preserve is a gem, offering young and old a place to gather, to learn, meet friendly neighbors and rejuvenate. For more information, contact the preserve at (928) 684-2772. Volunteering is encouraged and welcomed.

Gold Rush Days! By Patti Slattery Anyone who has ever been to Gold Rush Days comes back again. In fact, for almost 70 years, during one weekend in February thousands of people converge on Wickenburg from throughout Arizona and the United States. Some come to to be a part of one of Arizona’s largest parades; others spin around at the carnival; and some take in the rodeo, old time melodrama, and a large arts and trade show. All make memories that last a lifetime. Gold Rush Days kicks off in 2016 with the opening of Brown’s Amusement Family Fun Carnival on Thursday, Feb. 11. Opening ceremonies are Friday morning at 10 a.m., with a shoot-out and a gun slinging demonstration in front of the Chamber of Commerce at 216 N. Frontier St. A nearby classic car show adds WR WKH À UVW GD\ IXQ Saturday morning brings one of Arizona’s largest parades, À OOHG ZLWK FODVVLF DXWRPRELOHV à RDWV PDUFKLQJ EDQGV DQG PRUH than 1,000 horses. The parade begins at 10 a.m. Find a parking

place early and bring lawn chairs. Don’t miss the National Senior Pro Rodeo (NSPR) and Open Rough Stock competition, starting at noon on Saturday and Sunday. It was selected by the NSRP as its rodeo of the year in 2013, and is worth seeing. One of the most unique aspects of Gold Rush Days is the artisan fair, which offers booth after booth of almost every craft imaginable – from pottery to an array of artwork, leather goods, jewelry, clothing, specialty foods and items not commonly seen. Prices are reasonable, and it’s a lot of fun just to browse. Sunday includes gold panning championships and mucking and drilling at 10 a.m. in the festival area. All three days of Gold Rush wrap up with an old fashioned melodrama at the historic Saguaro Theatre. The play is put on by the Desert Stagers, and includes everything a good melodrama should have – including plenty of humor. A little more than a quick out-and-back Vulture Peak is Wickenburg’s major landmark. And where there’s a mountian, people must climb! The Vulture Peak Trailhead is seven miles south of Wickenburg, on Vulture Mine Road. The hike is a short but steep trail from the base of the peak (2,480 feet) to a saddle (3,420 feet) just below the summit in only two miles. Early in the hike, the trail meanders through classic Sonoran Desert landscapes, including dense stands of saguaro, ocotillo, cholla, and other cactus varieties; crosses wide desert washes; and offers dramatic scenic vistas of rugged desert mountain ranges and valleys in all directions. Most hikers are able to make it up to the saddle. From there, experienced hikers can scramble up an extremely steep and narrow chute WR WKH VXPPLW IHHW 7KH À QDO DVFHQW is not maintained and should be attempted

only by well-conditioned hikers with good knees. Getting down can be more tricky than going up. Vulture Peak Trail is accessed by two trailheads. The primary trailhead is suitable for passenger cars. An upper trailhead, suitable only for 4-wheel-drive vehicles, is near the base of Vulture Peak and may be reached by following the posted primitive dirt road from the primary trailhead. Vulture Peak Trail receives the greatest use October-April. At other times, the trail receives little use due to the heat. Drinking water is not provided at Vulture Peak Trailhead, so bring plenty, no matter the weather. Hikers should be on the look out for rattlesnakes or other poisonous creatures. Watch for them and be careful. Do not harass reptiles. Most bites result from people playing with, collecting, or attempting to kill them.
