ike many Western towns, Wickenburg sprouted up along the railroad tracks. So naturally, one of the most historic buildings in town is the depot. Located at 216 N. Frontier St., the depot is lovingly restored and maintained through local efforts and for many years has served as home of the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center. The 121-year-old building continues to make history as one of Wickenburg’s most vital activity centers. The Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center is the first point of contact for anyone wanting to learn about all there is to see and do in the Wickenburg area. Phone calls, emails, website visits, social media hits and good, old-fashioned face-to-face visits are plentiful. In fact, for 2015 the Chamber reported answering 10,439 phone calls, greeting 30,002 visitors and responding to 6,493 mail inquiries. The Chamber’s website received 81,366 visits, and the Facebook page tallied 145,227. The tourism website was visited 41,579 times, and its Facebook page counted 213,120. The Chamber plays a key role in supporting and promoting Wickenburg area businesses and organizes many annual activities, attended by locals and visitors alike – Gold Rush Days, Fiesta de Septiembre, Bluegrass Festival and the Christmas Parade of Lights, to name a few.

phone books and brochures for numerous things to do in the area are free for the taking. Whether in town for the afternoon or for the winter, the information and options are plentiful. And those who really love Wickenburg can also find a real estate guide! The Visitor Center is open seven days a week October through May. On weekdays Chamber of Commerce activities are in full swing with volunteers and staff to greet visitors and answer questions. The volunteer desk is filled every day (except holidays) by a force of about 15 regular helpers, which means visitors are welcomed on Saturdays and Sundays as well (usually between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.) during the winter months. Many of the volunteers have spent much or all of their lives in Wickenburg and can share a wealth of information with newcomers. Adding to the intrigue October through May, the A.T. and Santa Fe Railroad Engine No. 761, built in 1890, and WKH 6HULHV 6RXWKHUQ 3DFLÀ F 'URYHU &DERRVH ERWK MXVW a few steps from the Visitor Center, are open for tours on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Visitor Center reaches out to those who would like to become more familiar with the charming little Western town of Wickenburg. Maps, shopping guides, lists of restaurants, local business directories, 8

Don’t miss the museum’s second building, the Cultural Crossroads Learning Center. Located behind the beautiful bronze on the corner of Tegner and Wickenburg Way, this facility features a changing exhibitions. Ask for a calendar of events. The museum holds several talks and demonstrations in the learning center every month, on topics covering everything from art to geology to quilting. This fall, the museum’s temporary exhibitions marry the history of Arizona with its art. Ride through History: Saddles that Shaped the West opens on Oct. 15 and features 23 half-scale saddles crafted by master saddlemaker and Wickenburg resident Carson Thomas. The exhibition is enhanced by American Indian textiles from the collection of Steve Getzwiller. Maynard Dixon: Beyond the Clouds, opening Dec. 9, tells the story of Dixon’s life art and artifacts from Mark Sublette’s

private collection as well as several museum collections. Dixon (1875-1946) lived during a period of American history that encompassed monumental changes: from the battle of Little Big Horn, to Arizona statehood, to the opening of Route 66. His work captured a rapidly changing West. The museum is open daily, except holi-

Friends of Music offers free concerts for 43 seasons By Carol Arnett Friends of Music developed out of an idea formed by two ladies in the summer of 1974. One had learned of a Sun City classical ensemble looking for venues in which to play. They only wanted travel expenses. Those two ladies met with the Wickenburg mayor who said he couldn’t give them any town money, but they could use the relatively new community center that wasn’t being used much. Many years ago FOM invited WAC to do an art display in the banquet room, available after the concert. And in more recent years at the February concert, the art work of Wickenburg high school and Vulture Peak students is displayed. Also, after each concert, FOM has a reception in the banquet room with homemade cookies, cheese-and-crackers, punch and coffee with the opportunity for audience members to meet and chat with the performers. Besides presenting concerts for the general public, FOM also has an ongoing school outreach program in which professional musicians visit area schools for musical assemblies. The purpose is to encourage and challenge students to engage in music in

Another offering for students is $1,000 scholarship for college students going into a music-related program. These are renewable as long as the student continues his/her music studies. FOM is one of the original member groups of the Arizona Presenters Alliance, plus a member of other state-level arts and cultural organizations supporting the furtherance of the arts in the state. The trails are well-shaded by thick trees, which causes the temperature to drop as travelers walk deeper into the greenery of the preserve. Multiple benches along the paths overlook the river and a small lake, providing a relaxing break for hikers to reenergize and listen to the birds as they sing in the trees. Hikers can take a break at the saddle. Between the saddle and the peak, the trail becomes extremely steep as hikers have to use their strength to hoist themselves up a crevice in the mountain. The hard work pays off at the top with a panoramic view of rolling hills of the desert in every direction. To reach the Vulture Peak trail head start at Safeway in Wickenburg and drive south on Vulture Mine Road for about 6.4 miles. Look to the left for the signs which are nestled in a curve in the road. Turn left on the dirt road and continue to the parking lot. Off-road and 4-wheel drive vehicles can continue past the parking lot for about a 24

Bagdad, Arizona, is one of just two remaining company towns in the state. The townsite and Bagdad copper/molybdenum mine are owned by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold. 7KH VSUDZOLQJ FRORUIXO SLW JRW LWV VWDUW LQ ZKHQ WKH À UVW claims were staked in the area. The public is welcome to visit the Bagdad mine overlook, with an amazing view of the massive cavity located in the town of Bagdad, and observe mine workers driving along, dirt roads. From the overlook, mine workers can be seen on narrow roads operating colossal company vehicles. Guides will escort community members up to the overlook at 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. There are no age restrictions or special clothing requirements. Bring a camera and enjoy this unique view of the mine. To visit the overlook, check in at the mine security gate at 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays or Sundays. Visitors will drive their own vehicles on a well maintained dirt road. For information, contact Laura Phelps at (928) 6336633 or the mine security gate at (928) 633-3211. Please call in advance, especially if there has been extreme weather. Between Wickenburg and Bagdad, US 93 is also known as Joshua Forest Scenic Parkway. Joshua trees are indigenous to the Mojave Desert and nowhere else on earth. Members of the yucca family – and further back, the lily family – the plants can endure temperatures as low as 30 degrees and as high as 125 degrees. Make time to stop for a unique photo op.
