A cool way to beat the heat THIS SUMMER By noelle Konrad

Q

uite easily one of the most popular hangouts of the summer is Roseville’s Golfland Sunsplash. The park opened in 1997 with just a wavepool and a lazy river. My how the years have brought change. Now the 13-acre property is host to two 18-hole miniature golf courses, 5,000 square foot laser tag arena, a go-cart race track, food court, full water park and arcade that can hold up to 160 games, including parking.

On average, the park will host 3,500 attendees during the day with anywhere from 2,500 to 3,000 people in attendance during the night.

“I call Sunsplash, an extreme water park,” General Manager Steve Rodgers said. “There is something for everybody.”

Some of the rides can be extreme and have a height regulation of 48 inches whereas other play areas are perfect for smaller children.

“If you are above 48 inches you can ride all the slides,” Rodgers said.

When packing for a day at Sunsplash it is important to remember these key items:

CATCH A WAVE: The centerpiece attraction is the Thunder Bay Wavepool. It creates 84-foot wide tsunami waves to splash around in.

Fun activities to do at Golfland Sunsplash KING BENS CASTLE: The iconic towers of this castle can be seen off of the interstate, building excitement for the family fun center inside. An arcade with around 200 video games reside inside, along with 5,000 square feet of laser tag and a food court all within a medieval atmosphere.

MINI GOLF: The two 18-hole miniature golf courses are both different experiences. Course No. 1 is the Adventure Golf and course No. 2 is themed the Lost Continent Golf.

FASTCAR RACEWAY: “See you at the finish line” is often shouted to friends and family on the go cart racetrack.

Outside food is not allowed inside of the park premises. However, there is a

covered picnic area just outside of the castle doors where people can enjoy a packed lunch. There is also a food court inside the arcade that serves an array of comfort foods and classic fast-food items.

A Subway is located inside the castle as well as a concession that serves chicken strips, hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, and more.

“We make our own pizza so it tastes really good,” Rodgers said. continued on page 7

Within Sunsplash there are seven pools and 30 slides and counting. For safety measures, there are at least 65 lifeguards on duty with two EMTs at all times.

The pools are also on a constant filtration system for optimal cleanliness.

The water is backwashed once a week and a spot vacuuming occurs often.

“It’s pretty self cleaning,” Rodgers said.

Sunsplash has become rather famous for their extensive slides and small space.

In fact many in the industry will use Sunsplash as a verb. “We are going to Sunsplash this ride” is a term now used by other parks when designing a new slide in tight quarters efficiently.

For a long time Golfland Sunsplash was the only company who had a roller coaster slide that pushed its riders uphill.

Now there is one other location in California who mimicked them.

The park is open all year round with the exception of Christmas Day. The water park, however, is only open for approximately 90 days with their opening to the public on Memorial Day Weekend.

That being said, the fun continues year-round especially with the golf courses. Over a million lights are put up for Halloween and Christmas that move along with the music that plays. It might be cold, but it is a good time.

Golfland Sunsplash is a family-owned business run by five brothers and one sister, two of whom are local to the area. They currently own eight parks and are continuing to expand. 

Golfland Sunsplash attractions and slides RIPTIDE: The newest slide at Sunsplash is the Riptide. This slide is for a minimum of two riders and a maximum of four. It has a 65-foot drop, twists and turns, ending with a straight shot up an almost vertical wall.

SIX CHUTER: This single rider slide allows you to grab a mat and race your friends on the next slide over to the bottom.

DOUBLE DARE:After a seven-story climb, step into a capsule where the floor falls out from under you. The freefall is so fast riders will reach the bottom in eight seconds.

THUNDER FALLS: This multi-person raft ride is filled with sudden drops at almost seven stories high.

STROMRIDER: The up-to-four-seater raft will have riders clinging to the side as they swirl the bowl before dropping down and landing in the water pooling below.

THE STEALTH: This is a Northern California exclusive. It is a straight five-story drop down a half-pipe. Go as a double rider or by yourself if you dare.

THE REVOLUTION: The slide will rapidly push the rider down into the open bowl below.

THUNDER BAY WAVEPOOL: In the heart of the park is the wave pool. Feel like you are being gently tossed by waves, dip your feet in the water, or enjoy the view from the sand-free beach.

BERMUDA TRIANGLE: Want to just enjoy the water on a hot day? The lazy river is ideal for those who need a break from the thrill of the slides and just want to let the current lull them into relaxation.

THE TWIN TWISTERS: Pick your color, green or purple, and slide the tradition water slide to the pool waiting at the end.

MASTER BLASTER WATER COASTER: The first water coaster of its kind slides 40 miles per hour, pushing you up and down for one of the longest slides in California.

THE VORTEX: No tube needed for this one! See how many times you can spin around the bowl before taking the plunge.

THE DARK HOLES: Slide 350 feet in total darkness. Doesn’t matter which sideby-side slides you pick, the identical chutes will leave you curious to what will happen next.

ADVENTURE ISLAND: Great for young kids and those who want to wade in the shallow water. It’s the perfect water play zone for those who aren’t seeking the thrilling rides.

Women’s Improvement Club determined to keep going after 107 years

A

s they do the fourth Wednesday of September through May, the members of Roseville’s Women’s Improvement Club gathered at Denny’s on Sunrise last week to talk business over breakfast. These women know each other well.

Many have been colleagues for decades, joining the group as retirees and empty-nesters looking to do something “besides traveling and going to play bridge,” as member Kathleen Crane puts it.

Though she later hinted at an uncertain future for the group’s membership, the main order of business for last week’s meeting was honoring five-year member Ellie Ramsey with the Community Citizen award. The distinction came from the Sutter District, one step higher than Roseville in the General Federation of Women’s Club’s national, state and regional hierarchy.

Ramsey received the award for her work with Placer Veterans Stand Down, a three-day event in late May providing medical, legal, personal and professional help for local veterans. Of all the projects the Women’s Improvement Club takes on, Ramsey said

Stand Down is her favorite, especially since her son is an Army Sgt. First Class.

But over the course of its 107 years, these thirteen women, the rest of the club’s members and their predecessors have worked toward establishing major community staples in Roseville. The Women’s Improvement Club helped put the city’s first high school, park and library on the map. According to their website, the Women’s Improvement Club also began turning the wheel on Roseville’s water, sewer and waste management systems, installing trash cans and lobbying for pipe installments in the early 20th century, headed by founder Cora Woodbridge.

“Historically, this club was very active in improving the community of Roseville,” says nine-year member Kathleen Crane. “We do what we can in this community.”

Stand Down is one example of a major upcoming project, but the group also gets involved by collecting personal care items for the homeless at The Gathering Inn, providing first-day-ofschool breakfasts for local teachers and raffling off purses to raise money for women’s shelters. Crane’s personal project is leading a first grade reading group at Bradford Woodbridge Elementary.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs lists six project areas spanning the arts, conservation, public issues and other topics, but each individual group picks a signature project of their own. Here in Roseville, these women focus on preventing

domestic violence, collecting materials to help abused women return to the workplace and providing a small scholarship to Sierra College, among other things.

However, despite their current success and storied past, the group is struggling to find members. The ways younger generations practice philanthropy have changed with the advent of technology, and older, well-established groups like this one are having to adjust.

“We try to do as much as we can in those areas but we’re kind of a small club at this point,” Crane said.

Historically, the group has had over 90 members. Today fewer than 30 are involved. Crane, a retired teacher, is still involved in classrooms, helping children learn to read as part of her involvement in the club. But she said she’s noticed that younger generations are reluctant to get involved in the same way as women her age.

“Maybe they feel like it’s old-fashioned,” she said. “I think teens and college students are doing [philanthropic] things, but they’re not joining these groups.”

She added that she’s noticed younger people giving money through Facebook or GoFundMe donation sites, or attending experience-based events with a charitable purpose. As far as the involvement of young women in committee-based philanthropy, she admits it’s a hard act to balance.

“We have difficulty getting members, partially I think because women have gone to work,” she said. “You have to balance everything — career, children, family, and charitable work on top of it? It almost becomes overwhelming.”

Still, she hasn’t given up on building membership. In an effort to recruit, Crane has continued volunteering and speaking up in the community.

“We certainly don’t want an organization that’s over 100 years old to fall by the wayside,” she said. “We want to keep going.” 

he health food industry has seen a lot of changes over the past several years. Fads have come and gone and the importance of eating nourishing whole foods has become more and more pronounced in the way consumers shop for everyday groceries.

For about 25 years, Sunrise Natural Foods has been serving the community with quality products and one-on-one individual care long before health food stores were common.

The owners Bill and Judy Gillespie opened the Auburn location first followed second by Roseville.

Many have been clinging to the health food industry for guidance in navigating personal health issues as well as personal goals.

“Over the past couple years it (the clientele) has definitely changed. There’s a lot of new faces, new people that are completely new to the natural world of medicine and food,” Auburn Store Manager Teresa Gonzales said. “(We are) definitely seeing a lot of people making changes in their lives, it’s neat.”

People are now more concerned with the details of the food they consume, meaning they want to know where it grows, how, and what else is going into their bodies.

“A lot of people are doing things from scratch now and getting back to the basics,” Gonzales said.

Not only are they making meals from locally and organically sourced ingredients, but many are implementing natural products into every aspect including beauty. This lifestyle has attracted many new faces, introducing then to a world of health and a wealth of knowledge.

Some of the trends that are increasing in popularity are essential oils, coconut oil, turmeric, natural sleep and stress remedies, and whole food products. Finding multiple uses for these products has become the norm. Essentials oils can be used for so much more than just aromatherapy and coconut oil can be used from household cleaning, to cooking and more.

“Essential oils are huge,” Gonzales said. “The most pure and natural products possible is what people are looking for.

People are particular about the quality.”

Product consultants provide individual attention to customers who are in need of assistance with finding what product or supplement works best for them.

“Not that we are doctors, but we try to help people with their supplement needs and then take them over to food,” she said. “There’s a lot of one-on-one care here. We like to get to the root if we can. You end up having some pretty good moments with people out there.”

Along with foods and supplements, the Auburn location specializes in household goods, cookbooks, health guides, glass bottles, clothing, beauty products and more.

“I kind of like to say we are a one-stop shop,” Gonzales said. “A little bit of everything.”

When asked what might be new in the next few years for Sunrise, Gonzales said, “I would love to see us have a liquor license.”

The hope is to carry organic wines and beers in the near future.

“Good changes to come we can say,” she said.

Sunrise Natural Foods takes great care in getting to know each customer who enters either the Auburn or Roseville store.

Many regulars are called by first name when they visit.

“It’s that small-town family feel that people appreciate,” she said.

Anyone can special order certain health products if they aren’t already stocked on the shelves.

“I do believe everybody is different and we all have different needs. What’s right for one may not be right for another.

There’s different ways of eating well, it’s what works for you.

That’s why we try to have a little bit of everything,” Gonzales said. “I think the No. 1 thing is balance … that’s the way I look at it.” 

REATING HICAGO UISINE RAVINGS

“J

ust now a little girl around 8 was devouring chicken wings when I asked her how they were, she said, ‘All I taste is love. Love is all I taste.’

That’s what it’s all about,” owner of Rosati’s Christine Grau said.

Owning a restaurant was never in her original plan.

“It was the last thing I thought I would do after school,” Grau said.

However, after the death of her son, she sought inspiration away from her sadness. She opted to utilize her culinary degree, but was originally looking for commercial space in order to build work stations for caterers to use.

During her search she came across a listing for a restaurant for sale. It wasn’t clear at the time that that listing would change her life forever, but something drew her to the idea.

“It was completely random I didn’t even know what Rosati’s was,” she said.

Since her opening in August 2015, Grau has been celebrating the lives of those who have entered the restaurant.

She makes a point to get to know more than just the customers orders.

“I just love when we are celebrating life whenever we can,” she said. “I’d say 80 percent of the time I’m giving people hugs when they come in.”

Grau grew up in Boston sharing the East Coast’s love of pizza. She knew very little about Chicago, but knew she

loved the food already. The franchise originated in Chicago in the 1960s by the Rosati family and has remained true to the authenticity of the cuisine ever since.

“It’s a family friendly sports pub,” Grau said.

The many television screens that line the inside play baseball or football games during the season.

When the Chicago Cubs won the World Series in 2016, it was the busiest she has ever been. They were so full they were featured on the channel 13 news.

“I love the Chicago craze,” she said.

“It was magical.”

While the atmosphere is welcoming and lined with nostalgic sports paraphernalia, the food creates cravings that may not be satisfied anywhere else.

The core ingredients are sourced from Chicago, the cheese comes from Wisconsin, and the specific Rosati’s ingredients are shipped with the secret recipes inside.

“I cannot match the flavor. They truly have their own special ingredients in the sauce,” Grau said.

“The high-quality ingredients we have really make a difference,” Manager Sherrey Lawson said.

Their pizza ranges from traditional Chicago-style thin crust, double dough for an in-between crust, and of course, deep dish. The Chicago-style deep dish pizza is made in a pan with butter on the bottom for a crispy, buttery crunch, followed by dough, cheese, toppings and topped with the sauce and their special oregano Parmesan seasoning.

“They call it the upside down pizza,” Grau said.

The thin crust pizza is cut into squares rather than pie slices and toppings go under the cheese lined edge-to-edge in true Chicago form. The Monster Pizza has a total of 11 toppings on it.

“The flavor profile is something like you’ve never tasted before,” she said.

“I want people to walk out of Roseville and into Chicago.”

While pizza is a popular offering on the menu, the other dishes of pasta, sandwiches, hot dogs, wings, and more are some of the customer favorites.

One thing that is on what Grau calls “the secret menu” is the Chicago hot dog. She has the Vienna beef shipped from Chicago and places it on a poppy seed bun.

Grau honors her son’s memory with her restaurant. This style of food was one of his favorites. In college he wanted to start his own hot dog cart and now the hot dogs are hard to keep in stock as she sells so many. “(He’s) on this journey with me,” Grau said. 

Granite Bay doctor opens kid-friendly neurology practice

W

hen Granite Bay resident Dr. Ashutosh Raina ran his pediatric neurology practice in Sacramento, he found himself envisioning something different. In a field that often involves scary, chronic illnesses, the 43-year-old doctor and father pictured an environment for patients that was more about fun and less about fear. It wasn’t good enough to have a waiting room with toys in it. He wanted a designated room for toys — no talk of EEGs or diagnoses allowed.

On March 1, with the help of his wife Dr. Reetu Sharma, a cardiologist in Roseville, Raina opened the doors to a new kind of practice at 5800 Stanford Ranch Road, in Rocklin.

“A lot of parents and children come in to the office being anxious,” Raina says.

“That’s why we tried to pick a place that looks less like a doctor’s office.”

KEEPING UP THE PACE

Raina, originally from India, came to the U.S. in 2000 and completed a three-year pediatrics residency in New York. Afterward, he spent another four years specializing in pediatric neurology and completing an epilepsy fellowship at Wayne State University in Michigan.

Many of his patients have epilepsy, but he also sees kids with autism, headaches, concussions and developmental disorders.

Unfortunately, extensive hospital visits come with many of these illnesses.

Some of Raina’s patients are in hospitals more than the classroom, and that’s one reason the clinic has a lending library.

Patients can select a book after an appointment, read it at home and bring it back in exchange for another at the next checkup. They can come in between appointments for more books as well.

“Instead of giving stickers or candy after an appointment, why not give back knowledge?” Raina says, opening up a cupboard full of children’s titles, some of which discuss autism and other conditions affecting patients.

The reading room has colorful places to sit, cupboards of books and even a kid-sized leather armchair. Many of the items in Raina’s clinic were donated at a drive at the end of February. About 70 families brought stuffed animals, toys and over 200 books. Even then, since so many patients have to miss school due to their illnesses, Raina says he’s always looking to expand the library.

PLAY BY DESIGN

Playtime is tends to be carefree by nature, but Raina was deliberate in setting up this space. If patients don’t want to read before their appointment, they can go to the toy room down the hall near the exam rooms. Though it contains things like stuffed animals, a dollhouse and a colorful rug of a globe, some of its elements are similar to parts of the exam

rooms. For instance, the same globe rug appears in the exam room next door. This repetition of elements makes an easier transition from play to procedure. When a child is done with the exam, the doctor encourages him or her to head back to the toy room or reading room before leaving the clinic, allowing them to decompress.

“Kids carry their own anxiety and the anxiety of their parents,” Raina says, “so we try to keep the child at the center of their care.” He hopes that patients will be able to come back to the doctor’s office without the fear that typically accompanies those visits.

Sometimes, play is more than what it seems. Joyful expression is integral to any patient’s experience at the clinic, but Raina recalls one appointment where play was not only enjoyable, but part of the exam.

also played piano. Her parents were worried that the tumor was affecting her memory.

“So I asked her to sit down at this,” Raina says, pointing to a batteryoperated keyboard donated in the toy drive. “I thought ‘Why don’t we use this as part of the exam?’”

When she successfully played the notes, not only did Raina have an observation to work with, but it brought relaxation to the patient and relief to her family.

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND

As Raina and his staff continue to get settled in their new office, he wants to set up a music therapy room in coming months, to provide yet another outlet for patients. Community members and even his own second-grade daughter have expressed interest in playing for patients.

Raina hopes that when kids visit the

clinic to play music, it will teach them to have empathy and compassion for their peers struggling with neurological illnesses.

He also aims to set up support groups for his patients with autism and even socially awkward teens without autism.

Another project he’s working on is a

telemedicine program to help treat athletic concussions on the field when they happen.

It all comes together as part of Raina’s driving philosophy: “The biggest vision,” he says, “is to create a place where you get more than medicine.” 

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL VEGETABLE GARDEN By gloria young

t seems like magic – combine seeds, soil and water, add sunshine and in a few weeks you have a bounty of squash, tomatoes and peppers.

But it’s not quite that easy. A successful vegetable garden takes planning, preparation and patience, according to Placer County Master Gardener Nikki Duncan.

Duncan, a master gardener since 2009 and co-leader in the creation of the group’s demonstration garden at the DeWitt Center in North Auburn, offers the following 10 tips for ensuring gardening success whatever the time of year. continued on page 20

Make a plan

“Whether you plant directly in the ground or make a raised bed, you want the rows to be between 3 and 5 feet wide,” Duncan said. “You don’t walk to walk on them after you’ve prepared them. If you do skinny rows, you’ll have to walk in those.

That compacts the soil and the roots will be squashed. Have a bed that’s wider and work around it and in the center.

Four feet by eight feet beds are ideal for reaching.”

Raised beds or in-ground

H Raised beds have advantages and disadvantages. The soil will warm more quickly so you can plant earlier. But you’ll need to bring in soil.

A disadvantage is that you have to import soil and it has to be quality soil.

“Much of the soil (available on the market) has a lot of wood or sand in it,” she said. “If you have heavy clay or decomposed granite, work in the soil on top that’s friendlier.You’ll have a lighter soil that helps with drainage.”

Because they are above the ground, there are fewer drainage issues with raised beds. Raised beds are more expensive than planting directly in the ground.

Prepare the soil

Healthy soil is the foundation of the garden. Healthy soil will make healthy plants that will be able to fight off predators. For a summer garden, ideally that process begins in March for planting in May. “You don’t want the soil to be too soaking wet or bone dry,” Duncan said. “It must be gently moist.”

Remove weeds and rocks. Then add organic matter — compost or manure.

“You can use chicken manure or horse manure that has seasoned for a while,” she said. “You don’t want to use fresh manure. It is too caustic.”

You can add leaves and grass clippings from the yard — and let them compost right in the dirt.

Irrigation

The ideal irrigation method for a vegetable garden is a drip system with emitters 6 inches apart. “When the starts or seedlings are small, you’ll need to water a couple of times a day for a short period,” Duncan said. “As the roots get established and grow bigger, you’ll need to water longer and at longer intervals to get water down to the roots.”

Tomatoes have a hard time in the blasting afternoon sun — when the temperature soars above 90 degrees.

“Put a shade cloth over them,” Duncan said. “It’s a black woven fabric that blocks out part of the sun and keeps the vegetables from getting burned.”

Cucumbers need even watering. They don’t like to be wet and then dried out. Keep them evenly moist to ensure they won’t have a bitter taste.

Plant melons vertically up a trellis to prevent gopher damage.

Use panty hose of other lightweight fabric to create slings for the fruit.

“They will grow in a little sack,” she said.

Don’t limit yourself to the obvious.

Plant your garden for how much space you have, your favorite things and how many people you are trying to feed.

“If you have a small space for gardening, corn is not a good choice,” Duncan said. “You need enough plants that they pollinate well. You’ll want to stay away from things that take a lot of room such as melons and pumpkins.”

There are some less conventional vegetables that do very well in foothill gardens. A good choice is edamame.

“The soybeans are very easy and fun to grow,” she said.

Interested in growing a grain? Try Millet or amaranth.

“They are very easy to grow and drought tolerant,” Duncan said.

Or plant mouse melon.

“They are tiny. They look like tiny watermelons –about two inches long,” she said. “They are adorable and quite tasty.”

Or ground cherries.

“They are husked like a tomatillo,” Duncan said. “The ground cherry has a mild sweet flavor and is good in salads.”

Malabar spinach is another possibility.

“It’s a summer vine and has leaves you can eat like spinach or lettuce,” she said. continued on page 22 Roseville Magazine

It’s not a good idea to leave bare soil. The rains will cause erosion, volatility and the soil will lose nitrogen.

“It’s important to always have something there,” Duncan said. “The roots keep the soil nice and loose. In the off season, use cover crops such as buckwheat. It grows quickly, flowers quickly and attracts beneficial insects and bees.”

Vegetable gardening is not just a summer endeavor. “(In the foothills), we can grow year-round,” she said. “We have three seasons – you can plant in the spring, in the summer and we have a fall-winter planting time.” •

1½ cups all-purpose gluten free flour ½ tsp pink salt ½ tsp oregano 1 tsp dried basil ½ tsp black pepper ½ cup unsalted butter 6 tbsp ice water FOR THE FILLING

ome of the best vegetables can only be found ripe during the hot days of summer. Veggies such as corn, zucchini, yellow squash, bell peppers, carrots and potatoes are at their peak of perfection when it is hottest outside. Utilize summer vegetables and make a feast for the eyes and your tummy.

Now this is a dish that feels just like summer to me. Brunch is best when it is outside with family and friends surrounded with wonderful things to eat. Quiche is always on my list of musthaves for a brunch. The possibilities are endless … but this one is my favorite.

1 yellow onion 1 tsp dried basil and oregano Pink salt and cracked pepper to taste 2 cups of sliced zucchini 1 head of broccoli chopped 6 eggs ½ cup of unsweetened almond milk ½ pound of bacon chopped Topped with ½ cup cheddar cheese DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400 F. 2. In a mixer combine flour, salt, oregano, basil, ½ pepper until well incorporated.

3. Add the cubes of chilled butter until dough is broken into small clumps.

4. Add ice water until dough sticks together and knead only a little.

5. Chill dough for 30 minutes.

6. On the stove, sauté chopped bacon pieces until almost crispy. Use the bacon grease to then sauté the chopped onion for 4 minutes. Add seasonings, zucchini and broccoli.

Cook until tender.

7. Pull pastry out of the fridge and press into a greased quiche dish.

8. Whisk together eggs and milk in a separate bowl and set aside.

9. Scoop veggies onto the pastry dish and add spinach.

10. Pour eggs and milk over it all and gently move the mixture until every corner is filled.

11. Bake on the lowest rack for 45 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean from the center. Cover edges for the last 15 minutes of baking to keep them from burning.

Let sit for 10 minutes before serving.

12. Serve and enjoy!

F

or Kyle Martin, his life’s mission has been to “spread the gospel of music,” as he says. His passions for the arts include the goal of opening his own studio. However, that dream did not become a reality until about five years ago.

Martin’s musical career has been successful. It has been filled with touring and music writing. Some aspiring musicians dream of life on the road and Martin was grateful for his time on tour but afterward, was ready to settle down with his family in his hometown of Rocklin.

“I got that part of it (touring) which was awesome,” he said.

He assisted in opening several other studios until The Professional Voice, his own studio, became a reality.

“I really have a passion for teaching, I have a passion for the community, and there was a void in Rocklin ... as far as music was concerned.”

Martin has brought his experience and expertise to those seeking a variety of musical help.

“All ages, all levels, all styles,” he said. “Helping bring and foster talent in this area, to help fill a lot of these art places around the area has been one of my biggest goals.”

Martin also helps with the performance side of a musical endeavor. His student-centered learning techniques can take nervous singers and banish their stage fright.

“I used to be a nervous singer myself,” he said.

Despite his beginning nerves, Martin has gone on to be a singer/songwriter, keys and piano player, a recording artist with songs available on iTunes, the lead singer for his cover band JOEL, and has toured on Broadway with the show “Moving Out” featuring the songs of Billy Joel.

Queen and Elton John and has been called “the premier rock and roll Billy Joel tribute band on the West Coast,” according to Good Day Sacramento, KCRA and KQCA. “I’ve worked with some amazing people throughout my career,” Martin humbly stated. “There’s nothing like just getting out there and performing. There’s nothing like just getting up there and spilling your soul out there on the stage.”

He is now bringing the buzz that is happening in the larger cities like L.A., New York, London, and Nashville to the small town of Rocklin.

“We give people an opportunity to get involved in the music business,” he said. “We give them that hands-on experience.”

Currently at his studio the students range from children to adults with experience from shower singer to celebrity status.

Many of his students have furthered their careers on YouTube, Broadway, “American Idol” and more.

The eight teachers at The Professional Voice educate a variety of styles of music from pop to musical theater to post hard core and rock.

“We are quickly outgrowing this space,” Martin said.

The focus during classes is on artistic development, technique, style and performance. However, the most crucial focus in the pure joy of singing rather than the perfection.

Results are important, but Martin focuses more on the enjoyment of the arts.

“Us just being able to get together and celebrate music,” he said.

Next year Martin is hoping to gather the studios in the area and put on a benefit concert for the entire community to enjoy.

Even his three children all sing and are continuing the enthusiasm for the arts.

“If this remains a passion I will continue doing it.” •

Heed the signs of

eading into the homestretch of his last ultramarathon — footraces longer than the standard 26.2 mile marathon — my brother-inlaw worried about another runner who was thirsty and without water.

So Rene, a caring and generous soul, loaned his canteen to his fellow competitor and both kept racing toward the finish line.

But less than an hour later, and just three miles from completing the race, Rene collapsed and fell down an embankment, and sadly, died. At 63 years old he was in excellent health and had run seven ultra marathons.

The coroner reported he died of heat stroke and dehydration on that sweltering day four summers ago.

I believe Rene unfortunately underestimated both the danger of heat stroke while exercising on a hot day and the importance of frequent hydration while running.

And ever since then, I’ve gone out of my way even more to encourage my patients to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses as the temperatures rise.

This is the same message our sports medicine physicians constantly share with their athletic patients, whether professional or amateur.

“Death from heat stroke is preventable,” said Kaiser Permanente Sports Medicine Physician Susan Joy, MD. “When the body heats up exercising in hot conditions, it can overwhelm its own ability to cool down. So if steps are not taken early in the process, the body can essentially start to shut down and organs can start to fail.”

Therefore, one of the most important things we can do for someone who is overheated is quickly cool them down.

Here are tips from Dr. Joy on how to prevent heatrelated illnesses: • Recognize early symptoms of heat illness, such

as fatigue, lightheadedness, a headache or other seemingly less severe conditions and stop exercising.

• Seek medical help immediately if the symptoms progress into confusion or even loss of consciousness; at this point, your life may be in danger.

• If you’re exercising with a friend in the heat and find that person becoming confused or even combative, make every effort to have them stop exercising and cool down.

• Some of the more effective and quick ways to cool down include: Moving into the shade, placing ice packs or cool towels at the base of the neck, armpits and groin, or getting into a kiddie pool filled with ice water.

• Don’t ignore heat cramps.

• Understand your body and your unique hydration needs, and tailor the intake of fluids accordingly.

Generally, people are advised to “drink to their thirst.” In the past, some have suggested “staying ahead of thirst” but that’s not beneficial and in fact can lead to another medical problem: overhydrating.

• If you have very salty sweat (white stains on clothes, or salty substance on the skin), you might need to consider replacing electrolytes.

• Sports drinks are encouraged in endurance activities lasting longer than one hour.

• Water is still the first and best hydration recommendation.

As you exercise this summer — whether walking around your neighborhood after dinner, or competing in ultra marathons, or doing what I do, working out for at least 45 minutes a day, five times a week — I urge you to always have a water bottle handy and pay close attention to what your body is telling you.

It really could be a matter of life and death.

What to do with a

Lump Sum

here are two primary ways we receive money during our accumulation years: Earned income or for those of us lucky enough, an inheritance.

This month’s topic by request was what to do with a lump sum. Maybe you received an inheritance, maybe some life insurance money, or perhaps you earned a large bonus. Here are three ideas on what to do with this chunk of change.

Note, you will not see “pay off your house” anywhere in here. We have talked about this before, and it is typically not the best idea. Also note, if this is an inheritance and it is qualified money (say an Inherited IRA) sometimes the best thing to do is leave it be or continue RMDs. Don’t pull money out of qualified accounts with early withdrawal penalties and huge tax bills to do any of the things I talk about in this article. With those prefaces, let’s jump in:

PAY DOWN HIGH INTEREST DEBT

OK, maybe you have considered this one, but I am suggesting we be intentional about deciding what to pay down. Home mortgage rates are extremely low right now plus you are taking a tax deduction on the interest. If you have any credit card debt with those crazy 18 percent interest rates, let’s start there. Any debt that is more than 8 percent interest is probably smart to pay down or pay off. Anything less and you could be better off investing for growth instead and letting the interest service the debt down over time.

PRESERVE IT IN A LUMP SUM

One strategy I have used with clients is purchasing a single premium life insurance policy. Single premium life insurance policies typically purchase substantial death benefit in the range of $2 for every dollar paid in, plus the cash value is usually 90 percent or more

of the initial lump sum and grows 3 percent or more a year with base guarantees and no loss provisions.

Some insurance companies even offer long-term care insurance benefits in the life insurance policy as well.

For some clients, these triple duty policies are a great fit.

INVEST IN YOU

This is very dangerous for me to even recommend. I firmly do believe in enjoying the journey to retirement as much as enjoying retirement itself. Sometimes it makes sense to invest in you. If you are already consistently saving for retirement, if you are on track to have enough income in retirement, if your debts are already paid off, you could benefit from taking a sabbatical from work, take an exotic vacation or some other splurge. Maybe with just a piece of the lump sum.

What would I do if I received a lump sum? I would invest in a custom-fit designer suit. The one I have eyed for eight years now runs $3,500. I know $3,500 on a suit sounds frivolous (maybe that is why I haven’t done it in the last eight years), but I know that wearing a great fitting suit boosts my productivity and confidence.

Plus it would last for years. $3,500 for tangible productivity and confidence that pays dividends for the next 10 years really doesn’t seem too frivolous after all.

That is it for this month. If you see me around town in a perfectly fitted, Armani, black, two-piece, two-button, slim-cut suit, you will know that I went with suggestion number three.
