Welcome to the 57th Folsom Pro Rodeo Sacramento area’s favorite family event to celebrate the holiday

The Greater Folsom Partnership, consisting of the Folsom Chamber of Commerce, Folsom Tourism Bureau and the Folsom Economic Development Corporation, would like to thank the region for its continued support of this traditional event offering fun and excitement for all ages. We hope you enjoy the region’s best fireworks display lighting up the sky each night of the rodeo. Set to music, this patriotic display of brilliant color is an outstanding tribute to our country. It is a tradition we are proud to present each year. In addition to rodeo action, we have some truly amazing entertainment such as the high-flying motocross stars. Who can resist the cute appeal of mutton-busting cowboys and cowgirls as they grab a handful of wool and ride their sheep to victory? Again this year, fans will witness an international sport — bull jumping. We have two world-champions who will leap, twist and do flips over the horns of a snorting bull. These are just a few of the highlights of the Folsom Pro Rodeo. There are many more such as the popular silver dollar dig, the arrival of the giant American Flag by a skydiver and the traditional fast-paced rodeo action. Fans won’t miss a minute of the action by watching the dynamic filming appearing on the Jumbrotron screen. Our presenting sponsors are Folsom Chevrolet, Original Coors and Jack Daniels. Their generous support, in addition to the support of many other Folsom businesses and corporations, help the Folsom Pro Rodeo come alive. The Folsom Partnership and community groups utilize the revenue raised from the rodeo to benefit the Folsom community in a number of ways. The chamber and its affiliate organizations support many community events, student scholarships and provide many services to assist our local businesses. The organization also spearheads economic development activity in our city so it can continue to be a vibrant economic hub in the region and throughout the state. All of these factors blend together to make Folsom a great community. The Folsom Pro Rodeo is a long-time community event and is full of local family traditions. If you are native to Folsom or any of the surrounding towns, this event is nothing new to you. This year, the Folsom Pro Rodeo is introducing a brand-new attraction — Rodeo for Kids. This fun and family-friendly attraction includes a petting zoo and pony ride — at an additional cost. “This year we wanted to incorporate more family-friendly activities for the kids to do on site verses just that rodeo activities in the arena,” said Megan Murphy, marketing and communications specialist for the Folsom Chamber of Commerce. In the petting zoo there will be miniature cows, chickens, ducks, donkeys, pigs and more, Murphy said. In addition, a partner of the Chamber, BusyKidz, will have a kid’s obstacle course and fun crafts for kids to participate in. Murphy said this will all take place within the rodeo gates, on the grassy area by the zoo. “The gates to the rodeo open at 6 p.m. and the rodeo doesn’t start until 7:30 p.m., so it would be fun to come early, get a sweet treat and see the family-friendly things we have to offer,” she said. “We pride ourselves on being able to put out an event that is so family-friendly in the community, so it is a great event.” Make this year the start of or a continued family tradition at the 2017 Folsom Pro Rodeo.

City slicker? Haven’t been to the Folsom Pro Rodeo in years? Or, is an evening of western fun a holiday tradition for your family? Whatever the case, we’ve got insider tips for everyone planning to attend this year’s event.
Tickets Visit www.folsomprorodeo.com. Purchasing tickets to the Folsom Pro Rodeo is easy and frankly, there isn’t a bad seat in the arena. Check out the Mark III Construction Corral Club seating — located right next to the bucking chutes. These seats offer an incredible view of the action and offer no-host beverage/food service. These roomy reserved seats are $49.50. There are two other types of seating available, reserved ($26.50 all seats) and general admission ($21.50, $15.50 seniors/children under 12). Reserved seating, only available for purchase online, is a numbered seat. General admission is available online, at the Folsom Chamber of Commerce, Handley’s Western Wear, Apricot Lane in Palladio, Lees Feed, Folsom Diesel Works and Boot Barn locations. If you require ADA seating or have special needs, we ask that you call the Folsom Chamber of Commerce, 916-985-2698 for assistance.
What is the best discount for tickets? The Buckaroo Pack is great for families! Are tickets available at the arena? So are you one of those last minute decision makers? Yes, the box office at the arena will be open beginning at 6 p.m. and tickets will be sold as available. We do recommend an early arrival (gates open at 6) as our rodeo often sells out! Does my 2-year-old need a ticket? Yes, they do. Unless they are an infant and will sit in your lap the entire rodeo, all rodeo fans must have a ticket. Due to fire marshal regulations, no strollers are allowed in the arena. You can park your stroller near the entrance gates.
When should I arrive? The rodeo gates open at 6 p.m. The rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. If you have a general admission ticket and want that perfect seat, we suggest arriving close to that time. Put a blanket down on your seats and stroll out to the Cool Down Corral or over to Smitty’s Cowboy Cantina -for dinner or snacks. There are a variety of dining choices for everybody’s taste.
Is there an after-party? As soon as the fireworks fade, the new spacious Folsom Diesel Works Saloon Under the Stars heats up with live country music by Dave Russell. The saloon features a full-bar for those 21 and older. The saloon is open until midnight. Dancing and fun is encouraged.
Where’s the parking? Parking is available around the Folsom City Park. Parking onsite is $8. If parking nearby the arena, we ask that you are courteous to the neighbors by not blocking driveways or other access and PLEASE don’t leave any trash.

Bob “Smitty” Smith and Jim “Digger”
RODEO LEGENDS
With 57 years of entertaining the Sacramento region under its belt, the Folsom Pro Rodeo has a legacy of dedicated volunteers who laid the groundwork for its success. When arriving at the Folsom Rodeo arena, be sure and pay tribute to these individuals who are recognized for their dedicated service with a special plaque located on the lower ticket booth. Dan Russell Sr. Dan Russell Sr., along with the Folsom Lions Club, built the Folsom Rodeo Arena. Prior to the arena construction, the rodeo was contained within a simple wire fence. Russell, a Folsom cattle rancher, supplied the stock for the rodeo for many years. Russell owned the area now known as Empire Ranch. Those who knew him said he was dedicated to the rodeo and was quick to dispatch order behind the chutes to cowboys with his cattle prod. Steve Beneto For 30 years, Steve Beneto managed the Folsom Rodeo. With his strong business background, Beneto worked with rodeo

stock producers including Dan Russell Sr. and later Cotton Rosser to offer the community an exciting rodeo held each July 4th holiday. Beneto, known for his gruff demeanor, was a softie when it came to the young fans of rodeo. He often wandered through the stands greeting the children.
Michael Reidinger Architect Michael Reidinger was the creator of the Golden Spike Saloon – now known as the “Saloon Under the Stars.” Rodeo organizers were looking to add live music and a place to relax at the rodeo. Reidinger, a longtime volunteer, also served as Rodeo chairman for several years. He drafted his family to help including wife Teresa and one of his sons, Chris, who wrangled sheep for mutton busting. Mike was always a “snappy” dresser at rodeo complete with signature western shirt, silver belt buckle and boots. Bob “Smitty” Smith Smitty was the unsung hero behind the rodeo for many years. He’d arrive days before the rodeo to make sure everything was ready for the arrival of the rodeo stock.
He would help repair fences, gates; ensure the animals had adequate water and shade. He was quick to solve problems with a ready supply of bailing wire, duct tape and whatever tool needed. If there was something that needed to be fixed, Smitty had it handled. Always dressed in a longsleeved snap western shirt (no matter the heat index in July) and a toothpick in the corner of his mouth, Smitty loved to tell fascinating stories of his time in World War II. Jim “Digger” and Sharon Williams Jim “Digger” Williams, was a part of every Folsom Pro Rodeo since its beginnings back in the 1960s. Williams, better known to the arena crew as the “boss,” was responsible for the “background” items fans seldom noticed from grooming the arena floor to making sure the large American Flag dropped by parachute is treated with respect and doesn’t touch the ground. Williams and his crew rolled the barrels for barrel racing, wrestled sheep for the mutton busting and kept the arena floor in top shape for those cowboys who end up visiting it head first.

Following the loss of Digger in 2014, Sharon, keeps the Williams tradition alive at the rodeo as she continues her longtime role as “mutton busting mom” by corralling and wrangling 12 little mutton busting cowboys and cowgirls each night of the rodeo. As a longtime Folsom Chamber employee for more than 20 years, Sharon provides support for all of the chamber’s events and programs. Cotton Rosser Cotton Rosser of the Flying U Rodeo Company is a rodeo legend. An honoree in the Rodeo Hall of Fame, Rosser has been producing rodeos both large and small throughout the nation for more than 50 years. Rosser has put Folsom “on the rodeo map” with rodeo action and family entertainment for more than 27 years. “I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a cowboy. It is said “find a job you enjoy and you will never work a day in your life” I can say emphatically I don’t just enjoy my job, I love my job! Rosser and the Flying U Rodeo Company continue to be the stock contractor for the Folsom Pro Rodeo. Look for Cotton at the Folsom Pro Rodeo!
SALUTE TO THE POPPY MOVEMENT Since 1922, the Buddy Poppy has been an integral part of the Veterans of Foreign Wars community. As VFW’s official memorial flower, the poppy represents the blood shed by American service members. It reiterates that VFW will not forget their sacrifices. The Poppy movement was inspired by Canadian Army Col. John McCrae’s famous poem, “In Flanders Fields.” Poppies were originally distributed by the Franco-American Children’s League to benefit children in the devastated areas of France and Belgium following WWI. In 1922, VFW conducted a campaign and got poppies from France. Members soon discovered it took too long to get the flowers in from France and they came up with a better idea. Disabled, hospitalized and aging veterans could make the paper flowers and ship them out to the members for distribution. And so it was known, for veterans in VA hospitals and in state veterans homes, every day would be VFW Buddy Poppy Day. These men and women assemble the poppies, tie them in bunches of 10 and pack them in boxes of 500, 1,000 or 2,000 for shipment to the Posts and Ladies Auxiliaries.

VFW pays the disabled veteran for the work. In most cases, this extra money provides additional income for the worker to pay for the little luxuries, which make hospital life more tolerable. Furthermore, poppy assembly is often used as a therapy program to provide exercise for fingers and hands crippled by wounds, disease and the effects of old age. Another reason poppies are so important is because all proceeds from distribution are used for veterans welfare or for the well-being of their needy dependents and the orphans of veterans. More than 1,300 children of veterans have been, or are being cared for in the VFW National Home, thanks to a portion of poppy funds. Everyone needs to have enthusiasm for this program. Remember the two-fold importance of poppies: It’s truly all about veterans helping veterans and living up to VFW’s motto of “Honor the Dead by Helping the Living.” Join the Folsom Pro Rodeo in saluting our veterans. Members of the local VFW chapter will be at the entrance gates distributing the poppies and later will be in the stands to ask for your donation to this worthy cause.

Fast-paced family entertainment is the goal of the Folsom Pro Rodeo. In addition to rodeo action, the event is jam-packed with patriotic tributes and performances that keep fans coming back each year. It is an event guaranteed to keep everyone’s attention — no matter what their age! This year fans will experience an exciting sport from Europe — bull jumping. Frenchman Emmanuel Lataste will show off his extreme athletic talent during the Folsom Pro Rodeo. Bull jumping is a sport directly linked to a south-western French tradition called “Course Landaise.” Four-year-old Mexican fighting bulls are used for bull jumping. In every performance, at least two bull fighters are also in the ring to assure the safety of the participants. During the five-minute act, there will be more than 15 jumps and maneuvers. Another performance during the Folsom Pro Rodeo this year will include the fan-favorite The Flying Cowboys freestyle motocross experts. This year Luke Dolin and Les Parsons will perform and each night will test the limit of the arena by flying as high as possible and turning on their motorized steeds. These motocross daredevils spin high in the air just above the heads of the audience. This is not an event to be missed!

RODEO GRAND MARSHAL
Meet the Grand Marshal By Rachel Zirin OF THE FOLSOM TELEGRAPH
Rich Reynolds has been named the 2017 Grand Marshal for the Folsom Pro Rodeo, and there is no surprise why. Reynolds has not only worked in Folsom for 25 years, but he has been involved with the Folsom Pro Rodeo for more than 30 years. For the first time, the Folsom Pro Rodeo has a Grand Marshal who was originally a competitor. From being a bareback and saddle bronc rider, rodeo clown to bull fighter, Reynolds has shown the community one of his true passions — the Folsom Pro Rodeo. “I’m looking forward to another great rodeo,” Reynolds said. “I have been to some big rodeos like in Reno and Cheyenne, but Folsom has always had a special place in my heart.” The 60-year-old said of all the rodeo events, his favorite is saddle bronc riding because it is a classy event. As the Grand Marshal, Reynolds will be wandering the grounds, taking photos with guests and making sure they are having a good time. Along with his role as Grand Marshal, Reynolds is also in charge of the five bars that will be around the arena. “I have to make sure all of the bars are ready to go,” he said. “But I don’t do it alone though. I have an awesome crew. We make sure everyone has a nice cold drink.” Reynolds said he loves seeing people happy and having a good time at the rodeo. As the owner of the Dan Russell Rodeo Arena, Reynolds is always around to keep the structure in tip-top shape handling everything from fencing to the arena floor. Reynolds has held many roles with the Folsom Pro Rodeo and Grand Marshal suits him just fine.

Professional entertainer Matt Merritt will be making a special stop in Folsom for the Folsom Pro Rodeo this year and he is sure to entertain. Traveling from Olin, N.C., this professional rodeo clown has seen it all. Merritt has been in the business for more than 16 years and has traveled to Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, Canada and 48 states in the U.S. Merritt said during the rodeo, there are many animals and people competing and a lot of time, something will go wrong and there will be down time. “My job is to fill those dead spaces and
entertain people,” he said. “I tell jokes, do a skit or act, or dancing. It can be many different things. It’s a lot of fun, but it can be challenging. You got to keep it fresh!” The 35-year-old said he had heard of the Folsom Pro Rodeo and how big it is with huge crowds and he wanted to come see it for himself. To prepare for his profession, he said he goes on Wikipedia a lot to research along with local news. “I will look up and research anything that will make the audience feel special,” Merritt said. “If you live in Oakland, I will do something with the Warriors. If it’s in
Chicago, I’ll do something with the Cubs. I look for things that relate to where I am going. It is unique everywhere I go.” Merritt said he is looking forward to the energy of the crowd and the opportunity to have fun. “My job is unique in that where the crowd can make or break how I feel,” he said. “It’s my job to show them a good time. I have heard a lot about Folsom and it will be a good time.” Merritt’s favorite event during the rodeo is bull riding because of the inherent danger of it. “I have been around it so long, so I see the details that go into it,” he said. “There is a lot of technicality in it and to see it done right is awesome. In bull riding, the crowd seems to be really into it also. It is human nature that if you see someone doing something dangerous, you get excited.” Merritt played a role in The Longest Ride in 2015 and is an exclusive entertainer of the PBR Velocity Tour. Every year in July, we celebrate Independence Day. This day is so special to our country that we celebrate with a rodeo. More specifically, in Folsom, we have the Folsom Pro Rodeo. During the Folsom Pro Rodeo, we have a Rodeo Queen who is chosen by a panel of judges which usually consists of past Rodeo Queens and other prestigious people who are knowledgeable about horsemanship and rodeos, said Megan Murphy, marketing and communications specialist for the Folsom Chamber of Commerce. “There is only one Rodeo Queen crowned each year at the Folsom Pro Rodeo, and she holds the title for one year,” she said. “The Folsom Pro Rodeo Queen Contest is more than just a beauty pageant; the girls also need to know about horsemanship and so much more.” The queen contestants are evaluated and scored on horsemanship, public speaking, interview skills, poise and appearance, Murphy said. They are also judged on personality, knowledge of rodeo and of the Folsom Pro Rodeo. The contest will take place during this year’s Folsom Pro Rodeo. “The Folsom Pro Rodeo is one of our favorite events, and we are proud to present an event that brings the community together,” Murphy said. “This year, we are excited for some new additions to the rodeo.”

ALEXIS WINJE, 18, OF GEORGETOWN Education: High School Hobbies: I like to go horse camping, go to our local gymkhanas; I also enjoy showing my dog. How did you become interested in riding and how long have you been riding? My mom has always ridden. When I was about five years old, I got my first pony. Ever since then I’ve been hooked. What made you want to compete for the title of Rodeo Queen? I’ve always loved the sport of rodeo and to be a part of that would be an awesome experience. And not to mention getting to carry sponsor flags and talking to new people about rodeo sounds too good to be true. Do you have a favorite event at the rodeo? If so, why this specific one? Team roping. I enjoy watching how two people work as a team. Every time I watch I’m always at the edge of my seat if I got a chance to do team roping, I definitely want to be the header. What are you looking forwarded to most about the rodeo? I’m looking forward to running sponsor flags, public relations, helping out however I may be assistance. What are the duties you will have as Queen? The Queen’s duty is to represent her rodeo, educate people, show how truly amazing rodeo is.

How did you become interested in riding and how long have you been riding? I fell in love with horses when I was about three and never had the chance to own horses. Instead, I became involved in 4-H where I borrowed horses and showed until I was 18. I now ride for UC Davis IHSA Western Equestrian Team. What made you want to compete for the title of Rodeo Queen? As a young girl, I remember watching Rodeo Queens in awe of their pretty horses, leather chaps and sparkly crowns. I want to be Miss Folsom Pro Rodeo to promote the rodeo and inspire other young people the same way they did for me. Please tell our readers what really goes into becoming a Rodeo Queen: Rodeo Queens really know their stuff. Everything from horse knowledge, rodeo facts and Folsom news is necessary. We also are good riders and have a passion for rodeo. It is more than glitter and glam; it is time, effort and lots of fun. Do you have a favorite event at the rodeo? If so, why this specific one? Yes! Bareback riding is my favorite event, as I love horses and it is so intense to watch these creatures try to buck off their rider while the rider attempts to hang on. What are you looking forwarded to most about the rodeo? I’m looking forward to meeting new people and making friends with the girls I’m running with.

Hobbies: I enjoy driving horses and barrel racing. How did you become interested in riding and how long have you been riding? I’ve enjoyed riding since I was three years old. My favorite memory is following my father in our garden with mini mule while he disked the field. What made you want to compete for the title of Rodeo Queen? Folsom Rodeo has always held a special place in my heart because I have been attending it every year since I was 10 years old and my favorite part is watching the Rodeo Queens. Please tell our readers what really goes into becoming a Rodeo Queen: Being a Rodeo Queen is a huge responsibility. You are given the opportunity to travel and represent your rodeo and the western lifestyle. Do you have a favorite event at the rodeo? If so, why this specific one? My favorite event is bareback bronc riding because I love to watch the horses perform and my father was a bareback rider when he was younger. What are you looking forwarded to most about the rodeo? I can’t wait ‘til Folsom Rodeo. My favorite thing is the fireworks! What are the duties you will have as Queen? As Queen, I will attend different pro rodeos as well as different non-horse events in Folsom.
What are the duties you will have as Queen? As Queen, we mostly promote the Folsom Pro Rodeo across the state and in/around Folsom throughout the year. This includes meeting with the public and rising in various rodeos.

Do you have a favorite event at the rodeo? If so, why this specific one? Barrel racing because it is an event in the rodeo where women get to perform, and I also barrel racing myself. What are you looking forwarded to most about the rodeo? What I am looking forward to the most about the rodeo is watching professional cowgirls and cowboys make a living and competing; doing what they love as well as watching the community come together enjoying all the several events that are presented during the three days.

This is my first Folsom Rodeo and why not run for queen? What are the duties you will have as Queen? Role model for the young girls and boys that no matter how hard the task is keep on going.
What are the duties you will have as Queen? As a Rodeo Queen, my duties are to promote the sport of rodeo in a professional manner, engaging the crowd and competitors, maintaining poise and knowledge of the sport I promote. Duties also include appearances to news stations, rodeos, community events, interviews and more.
