“It’s nice to be home,” Jeff Culbertson said about finally bringing his career back to Lincoln, his hometown.

For someone who has seen a lot of homes throughout the 38 years he’s been in the industry, home for him is nestled where he grew up.

When Culbertson was 19 years old, he left Lincoln for San Jose and recalls seeing the population sign get smaller and smaller as he drove away. Back then, Lincoln occupied fewer homes than it does today. He remembers growing up with jokes like, “Don’t blink or you’ll drive right past it.”

When he left, he was at the beginning of success with real estate, but always held a place in his heart for his hometown.

Culbertson’s work took him to several destinations and included a lot of traveling. He created and sold several businesses including a mortgage company.

He found himself working as a consultant, as well as an agent which led him to Newport Beach.

His experiences were managing a Coldwell Banker owned and operated businesses. Over the years he has been in charge of the Northern and Southern California, Hawaii, and Arizona regions.

There was a time where he was in charge of 9,000 employees and agents.

“I’ve done a lot of different things in the business,” Culbertson said.

From a very young age, Culbertson has thrived in the real estate industry. His son Colby has done the same. Following in his father’s footsteps, Colby was licensed at 19, has worked for Zillow, started his own group and now invited his father to work alongside him.

After moving back home, Culbertson joined his son’s team and formed the Culbertson Group.

“I tried to retire and I’m just not built that way. It doesn’t work,” Culbertson said.

Jeff is the former owner of one of the Bay Area’s largest real estate firms. He’s also been selected as one of the nations “100 most influential real estate executives”, as well as the LA Business Journal’s Real Estate Person of the Year in 2012. him to where he is now.

“Along the way I have had some really nice accolades,” Culbertson said.

In 2012 he was awarded real estate business person of the year by the Los Angeles Business Journal.

“That’s quite an honor,” Culbertson said.

He was also awarded one of the top 50 most influential real estate executives in the United States and now both he and his son are Zillow Premier Agents. These are only a handful of the honors awarded over the years.

“You look back and you say it’s been a good ride,” Culbertson said.

Culbertson’s family roots are deep within the community.

He is the oldest of six and is the third generation to be raised in Lincoln. His father and some of his uncles played for the Lincoln Potters. His grandfather used to work at what was called the Pottery and is now Gladding McBean. And he recalls working in his youth at Lincoln Ice and Beverage, which is

no longer there. Culbertson now enjoys the future generations growing up in Lincoln by being nearby to his grandson and granddaughter.

“I count my blessings because it has worked out,” Culbertson said.

Culbertson has found abounding success and has brought his hard work back home, with no future plans of slowing down.

“I am definitely not retired,” he laughed.

The office in Lincoln has only been open for a few months, but it was a good choice for both Colby and Jeff.

“When I go to work, I like to go to work,” Culbertson said.

“I don’t believe in one foot in and one foot out.”

And he is happy where his journey has taken him and it is far from over. For Culbertson it is about being home.

“I’ve always loved the real estate business, but now that I get to do it with people that I grew up with,” Culbertson said. “It’s everything I could hope for.” ❖

hat’s better than indulging in a sweet frozen treat on these hot, dry summer days?

Not much. Thankfully Lincoln offers a nice variety, from frozen yogurt and shaved ice to polar pizzas and milkshakes. Here are three places to get your next fix.

Of course the favorites are chocolate and vanilla, but a few other favoriites are the banana cream pie, orangecicle and cake batter. Owner Jason Ladd says the latest craze in the shop is the Horachatta frozen yogurt.

Home Spun makes their own chocolate covered strawberries and four different types of chocolate covered Oreos. In addition to frozen yogurt, Home Spun also offers shaved-sno and yogurt, something they like to call sno-yo. It is fluffy and creamy.

The Ladds have been at their location in Lincoln since 2010 and have earned several regional awards.

“We’re family owned. Our kids and grandkids have worked here, we have them in all the time.” Ladd said.

If your looking for a traditional ice cream shop, Baskin Robbins has been a favorite for decades. The Lincoln store has been open since November 2014 and the owner Jyoti Gill couldn’t be more thankful of the Lincoln community for their support. The local favorite flavors are peanut butter chocolate, cookies and cream, mint chocolate chip and especially rainbow sherbet for the kids. For the past year Baskin Robbins has been offering ice cream cookie sandwiches with five different cookies to choose

916-409-2377 Right in the heart of downtown Lincoln, is Country Harvest, a bakery and cafe that prides itself on fresh local ingredients since its start in 2014. Along with offering the typical cafe fare, this shop also servers some frozen favorites. Country Harvest has kept the famous McBean Shake, invented by the building’s previous occupants, but with a new twist. It is still a scoop of ice cream with a shot of espresso but now the ice cream is espresso flavor instead of vanilla. Owner and chef Patti Storer plans on launching a new expanded menu with an ice cream social where guests can sample new items.

The social will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 8. The expanded menu will include a Mocha McBean Shake, a Carmel McBean Shake, sundaes, Fruit Freeze floats and ice cream pies and cakes.

The current favorites for a scoop of ice cream are pistachio and mint cookie. Country Harvest also offers Fruit Freezes which are a frozen mix of fruit and fruit juice. Customers can also create a 50-50, combining a scoop of Fruit Freeze and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

On the expanded menu customers will be able to create a Fruit Freeze float by combining it with an Italian soda. All the ice cream and fruit freeze flavors are made

or me, a day hike falls somewhere between a long walk and a backpacking trip.

We are lucky to have several fun hikes close to Lincoln that showcase the natural beauty of the north valley. These can range from easy to moderately strenuous and all are within a half-hour drive from town.

Don’t forget the snacks, water, and sunscreen.

AVERY’S POND The trail to Avery’s Pond is an easy two-mile loop that wanders alongside the North Fork of the American River. It is part of the historic Pioneer Express Trail and is located inside the Rattlesnake Bar recreation area at Folsom Lake.

The trailhead begins at the equestrian staging area.

Dogs are allowed if kept on a leash. Since the trail is used by horse riders, one has to be mindful of the occasional leftovers on the trail.

This month, Lincoln View features hiking trails. (See June’s issue for cycling trails.)

Kirby Desha is an outdoors writer and pens mostly fishing stories. But his family enjoys the outdoors as much as he does and they enjoy hiking wherever their feet will take them.

The Kirby’s Katch author will take paths to Avery’s Pond, Fairy Falls, Hidden Falls and Griffith Quarry Park. Although they are not in Lincoln, they are just a short drive away.

“Northern California offers an incredibly diverse range of outdoor activities,” Desha said, “and Lincoln is in the perfect location to take advantage of easy access to all of it; fishing, camping, boating, skiing, or hiking.”

California’s great outdoors surrounds Lincoln and it is there for all to enjoy, whether riding on two wheels or taking it one step at a time.

The walk begins on a wide sandy path and narrows as it winds though the shade provided by live oaks. There are some beautiful views of the lake on the right as the trail crosses a series of small wooden bridges.

Once it reaches a man-made, stone watering hole, it crosses one more bridge and opens to the pond itself. The historic one-acre pond was built in the 1880s by Ira Avery, a local rancher who came to California as a teenager in 1874.

The pond is not suitable for swimming or wading, but one can easily access the river by following a short path below the pond. As always, be careful of ticks and the ubiquitous poison oak.

It is not certain where the water comes from, but it is assumed the source is the Yuba River somewhere near Penn Valley.

The hike starts at a large parking lot and covers a lot of different terrain. The trail is wide at the bottom and narrows as it goes up. It’s pretty well signed and passes through several beautiful meadows filled with wildflowers before reaching the creek.

The falls are a little way farther up and there’s a fence to protect visitors from falling over. The area was once owned by the U.S. Army and was home to a mock German town that was used for training during World War II.

This is a pretty popular hike, where one may pass a lot of families along the way down. So, if you want to beat the crowds get there early.

If one Googles directions, there are a lot of different ways to get there and it is believed it is a part of Grass Valley, but here’s how we get CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

Head out to Camp Far West by taking McCourtney Road north or Lincoln Highway north to Sheridan and turning right on Riosa Road. Both roads lead to Camp Far West Road.

Once on Camp Far West Road, go past the north gate and continue until the pavement ends. Stay on the dirt road for about two miles until it dead ends at Spenceville Road (there is a sign for the Spenceville Wildlife Area). Take a right at the sign and go another mile, and the parking lot is on the left.

There is a gate at the entrance that leads to a stone bridge.

Note: I did not see any bathrooms there so be advised.

GRIFFITH QUARRY PARK I had driven past the Griffith Quarry Park and Museum many, many times before I heard there was a series of trails around and through the 23-acre park. The museum is located at 7405 Rock Springs Road at the corner of Taylor and Rock Springs in Penryn (across from the old Valencia Club.)

From the parking lot, the trails lead in several directions. The outside trail is probably about two miles, while the shorter inner loop trail is maybe half that.

According to the plaque outside the museum, the quarry was founded in 1864 by a Welsh immigrant with matching first and last names — Griffith Griffith.

The granite produced at this quarry was considered some of the finest quality stone in the country and was used in many buildings in San Francisco and in the California State Capitol building. The quarry itself was added to the register of California Historical Landmarks in 1976.

To take the outside loop, start by going to the left out of the parking lot and follow the wide path that leads up through a meadow. There are many benches and picnic tables available along the way.

This trail goes past the old quarry. There are many large, impressive granite outcroppings throughout the park. This is a great area for little ones, but older folks may need to stay to the easier paths as some are rocky and steep.

The trails meander and goes in circles a few times. Flora includes the California buckeye, the soap plant, toyon, bush lupine, digger pines and the ever-present poison oak.

There is no charge for entry to the park.

HIDDEN FALLS REGIONAL PARK Hidden Falls is one of the crown jewels of Placer County.

Thanks to the Placer legacy Open Space Program, the 1,200-acre park contains 30 miles of multiple-use, natural surface trails. It can be used for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

There are at least 20 clearly-defined hikes in the park, ranging from easy to difficult. It seems the most popular hike to the falls is the seven-mile loop known as the North Legacy/South Legacy Way.

It’s listed as a “moderate” trail and has several steep grades. Expect a three- to four-hour hike on this trail. Throughout the park there are several bridges, benches, viewing decks, swimming holes and vista points offering fantastic views of the Sacramento Valley.

There is a very nice, paved parking area at the base of the trails with restrooms, but no potable water. Be sure to bring your own.

The park is open daily starting one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. There is no charge, but cell service is limited and be sure to watch for ticks!

Recently, overcrowding has become a problem. Visitors are advised to carpool and get there early. Parking is not permitted along the roads leading to the park.

A

n All-American City deserves an all-American pastime.

Lincoln was named an All-American City in 2006. The award, the oldest community recognition award in the nation, is given out annually to 10 cities by the National Civic League. It recognizes communities for outstanding civic accomplishments that demonstrate innovation, impact, inclusiveness and civic engagement, according to the league’s website.

Eleven years later, Lincoln is now associated with another league: The Great West League, where the Lincoln Potters baseball team is, as of this writing, at the top of the standings and in sole possession of first-place. The Great West League is a collegiate, wood-bat league with teams in Chico, Marysville, Yuba City, Portland, Ore. and Medford, Ore. June 1, opening night for the Potters, saw more than 1,600 fans come out to McBean Park Stadium to watch the home team defeat the Marysville Gold Sox by a score of 11 to 5.

“We also have volunteer ushers and ticket-takers who have been a great help,” Lundgren added. “A lot of people have put time and money in to see it successful.”

One such volunteer group is the Friends of McBean Park, which is raising money to make improvements to the entire park. Kris Wyatt, one of the leaders of Friends of McBean Park, said the organization’s mission is to improve and revitalize McBean Park.

“Phase I of the project is making improvements to the stadium,” Wyatt said. “Our goal is to raise $2 to $3 million over the next five years without government funding.”

“Without them, this wouldn’t happen,” Lundgren said. “They spearheaded the baseball movement. The Friends of McBean have raised money for improvements to the stadium and they’ve gotten the word out to the community.”

“I think Lincoln is a great fit for something like this,” Lundgren added. “The community cares about what’s going on, they want it to be successful and they support local efforts. Baseball is cool in that you don’t have to love the game to enjoy it. It’s social; it’s a great place to gather with friends and family whether you are a fan or not.”

For me, this sums up what I like about community events in Lincoln: A great place to gather with friends and family.

And, that the past and present are tied together in the historic stadium where the Lincoln Potters of old once played makes me enjoy the experience even more.

wner of Simple Pleasures Restaurant and Catering, Diana Burke-Fuentes grew up in the community of Lincoln with a heart for service and a drilled-in work ethic instilled in her by her family at a very young age.

Both her mother and father, Doris and Robert Flocchini, loved Lincoln. Her mother was a court clerk and bakery owner while her father was a Placer County Sheriff ’s deputy for 33

years and then restaurant owner.

Doris worked from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and she made sure her children had warm meals. She would come home to make dinner, put the kids to bed, and sleep for a few hours before going to the bakery from midnight to 5 a.m.

When Burke-Fuentes was in high school, her parents added

to their already busy schedule of raising children and working two jobs, the venture of opening a restaurant.

Simple Pleasures will be celebrating 38 years of operating as a family business on Oct. 8, still in the same location.

Now, Simple Pleasures is a generational business with caring for the community at the helm.

“We worked hard as a family to get it (the restaurant) open,” Burke-Fuentes said.

“We grew up with incredible work ethic. We worked until we got it done.”

That being said, there have been many changes over the years, including the name.

Its former name was Sandwich Alley, but as the menu evolved and when Burke-Fuentes bought the business in 1991, she renamed the restaurant to match the catering side by calling it Simple Pleasures. It reminds her of how food can be comforting and how something minor can bring so much joy to those around you, she said. She wanted a name that expressed all that they offer, which is so much more than food.

Back when her family bought the building, it needed a lot of work. Right when they were about to launch the remodel, her father was injured, but that did not stop them from getting the job done. Burke-Fuentes recalls with laughter her father sitting in the building with a cast coming down from his hip as he directed family and friends in the completion of the remodel.

Sure enough, the job got done and the family restaurant opened its doors, welcoming and serving the community.

Burke-Fuentes would wait tables during the lunch hour and decided then that running a restaurant would never be her calling.

“I decided I would never ever go into business for myself,” Burke-Fuentes said.

When her career at Hewlett-Packard came to a crossroads, Burke-Fuentes decided to follow the advice of her husband and take the severance with the hopes of buying the family restaurant.

“My husband urged me to take that (severance package),” Burke-Fuentes said.

Her husband urged her to buy the restaurant from her mother who was planning to sell to someone else.

It sparked a fire inside Burke-Fuentes and she thought, “You can’t sell my restaurant.”

That was the beginning. Her motivation to serve the community and keep the business in the family was strong and she began to

“We want this to be second home for people,” Burke-Fuentes said. “This is the purpose for my life is to actually serve people.”

Her middle son Aaron helps in managing the business and all of her six grandchildren have helped out at one point or another.

Alongside the restaurant is a full catering company. Simple Pleasures often caters philanthropic events, weddings, funerals, as well as business and corporate events with an expansive menu.

Burke-Fuentes has seen a lot of loss and hardship in her own journey and she says it is one of her greatest pleasure to be able to provide some comfort for those mourning the loss of a loved one.

“If we are impacting one life, it is worth it,” Burke-Fuentes said. “Life is so quick and so short; my job is to serve.”

And what Burke-Fuentes thought would never be her passion turned into a lifelong purpose.

“My idea of a great night is the dinner table packed,” she said. “We have a lot of ‘framily’ (friends and family) dinners.” ❖

Why wait?

How to retire early The million-dollar question these days is: “How do I retire early?”

Ironically this question seems to become more popular as life expectancies in the United States are increasing. This not only gives us the challenge of funding our retirement sooner, but also for a longer period of time.

Approaching retirement can be daunting so let’s over simplify it and break down the three things you can be doing right now.

1. Save more. This is a “duh.” Just remember there is no silver bullet for retirement. At the end of the day, you must save something.

This is probably the most important on this list. You must have something to pull income from in retirement and you have to have something to earn growth on leading up to retirement.

2. Spend less. This one is a bummer that I typically don’t talk about. There are three types of money: Accumulated money, lifestyle money and transferred money. I don’t ever like to touch or take away from lifestyle money.

It is important to enjoy the journey to and through retirement. It is also important to live within your means though, especially if you want to retire early and fully enjoy a long retirement.

3. Earn a higher rate of return. This is last on the list. “Rate of return” gets the lion share of credit when it comes to finances, and it

really shouldn’t. Let’s look at an example of a 50-year-old making $100k a year hoping to retire at age 60 with $350k saved and $20k being saved annually. Let’s say their portfolio is earning 8 percent a year and they will retire on $70k a year. We aren’t considering social security or a possible pension, but this person would run out of money at age 75 as is. To stretch those dollars saved to age 90 would require a 16.79 percent annual rate of return.

That just isn’t practical. If they didn’t have any return on their savings at all, the money would only last to age 67. Earning growth on your money is important like the other two points above, it just won’t get you all the way through retirement on its own.

REAPING THE FARMERS’ MARKET BOUNTY RECIPES AND PHOTOS BY NOELLE KONRAD

We are so blessed to reside in such an agricultural hub (if you will). There are farmers and rancher who make it their sole mission to produce quality fruits, vegetables and meats.

Lucky for us they all seem to convene at the farmers’ market, which makes it incredibly easy as a consumer to shop for only the best and most nutritious ingredients.

I decided to visit our local farmers’ market for some fresh produce to make some summer treats both classic and unconventional. It’s like finding treasure when the fruits and veggies needed are in season and they are ripe to perfection. I highly recommend frequenting any farmers’ market to support local agriculture and (bonus!) you get something tasty every time.

PASTA PRIMAVERA (Serves 4-6)

1 bag of fettuccini noodles * I use gluten-free rice noodles 2 large heads of broccoli 1 green bell pepper 2 zucchinis 1 garlic clove minced ½ yellow onion 2 tablespoon grass fed butter 1 cup Parmesan Pink Himalayan salt and pepper to taste

Add water and a pinch of salt to a large pot and place on stove. Add noodles and boil until soft. *careful gluten-free can turn mushy very quickly. Test often.

Drain noodles once cooked and place back in the pot. Add olive oil to a medium skillet and allow to heat.

Place chopped onion and minced garlic in hot oil and cook until fragrant.

Add chopped broccoli, zucchini, and bell pepper, sautee until soft.

Add veggies to pot with noodles and stir with butter and Parmesan.

Serve with another sprinkle of cheese, salt, and pepper.
