Granite Bay dentist employs latest tech with old-fashioned service

B

efore he owned a pair of dentist offices, Daniel Parish ran a trio of paintball stores.

They were called Ace Paintball, a first foray into entrepreneurship by an Orangevale native with a bachelor’s in economics and a mind to start his own business. As a practice run for what would transpire in his 30s, Ace Paintball was a success for Parish: he acquired property, partnerships, customers and a team.

He learned to manage multiple locations, one each in Folsom, Rocklin and Elk Grove, and made a connection with his future father-in-law that would come in handy years later. And he learned the game of working with people.

“From my paintball experience, I learned how to market, I learned how to have fun, I learned how to lead a team,” he says.

Now 38 and managing his own dental practice — Parish Family Dental, in both Granite Bay and Carmichael — Parish has also acquired the professional expertise and capital to stake out a career wherever he wants, and that means Granite Bay. Parish settled on dentistry for a few reasons: advice from his best friend, a pediatric dentist; his uncle is a high-end dentist in Benicia, in the Bay Area; and his wife was on board with moving there so Parish

could go back to school at the University of San Francisco, at age 30.

With business experience already behind him, Parish says, he wasted no time in learning the trade and developing a vision of his own by working at Marin County Dental Clinic in between studies.

He brought his family back to Granite Bay in 2013, and jumped at the chance to buy the practice in Carmichael that belonged to his father-in-law’s dentist.

“Coming out of dental school, new grads typically don’t buy a practice …

But I knew what I wanted to do the whole time in dental school,” he said. “I wanted to take care of families. I didn’t really see myself dealing with a bunch of high-end, executive, single people … I’ve always envisioned taking care of mom, dad and siblings, and seeing that family grow up.”

Through marketing, technological upgrades and a focus on customer service, Parish Family Dental nearly tripled the business of its predecessor in nine months. Parish also became engrained in the community, coaching little league in Granite Bay and sending his sons to school at Excelsior Elementary and Granite Bay Montessori.

When a new shopping center outlet came open at the corner of Douglas and Sierra College boulevards, he didn’t hesitate.

“

Parish Family Dental opened at 4060 Douglas Blvd. in October 2016, with half the space and twice the rent of the Carmichael office. He quickly turned it into a CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

continued from page 7 high-tech operation to compete with other dentists in Granite Bay, without elite prices or losing the “neighborhood business” feel.

“We can do 12 crowns on a guy, fullsmile makeover. He comes in at 8 o’clock, he’s out of there by 1 or 2, his life is completely changed, all for under $12,000.

Down the road, guys are doing big procedures like that for $25,000 or $30,000?

I don’t think you need to charge that,” he says. “I’m realistic that if I can see multiple patients and utilize my assistants correctly, we can all make a good living and take care of a lot of patients.”

A big part of being competitive, he says, is customer comfort: patients who want them can get coffee or water, their own headphones, an electronic massage while they sit in the hygienist chair and a warm cloth when they leave.

Cutting-edge technology is also key, as long as it either helps Parish do his job or makes the customer more comfortable.

Each of the five patient rooms in the Granite Bay office have two ROKU TVs, one in front of the chair and another above it, so patients can watch shows or play games while they have work done. The office has a mobile, handheld x-ray device that emits less radiation than stationary machines, is faster to use and cheaper, because its mobility means the office doesn’t

need more than one machine. There are air-abrasion units that can painlessly remove certain cavities in minutes. There’s a CEREC machine to manufacture as many same-day crowns as a patient could need.

And his assistants have special licenses that allow them to do things regular registered dental assistants can’t, so he can see more patients per day.

One of these assistants, May Price, corroborates Parish’s description of the practice.

“He cares about the patient a lot. He treats them like family and makes sure

they’re comfortable, especially with patients who are very nervous,” she says.

Looking ahead, Parish thinks his next big development will come from the state pushing for remote services, or teledentistry, to export dental care to neighborhoods where a dentist wouldn’t make it but a hygienist could. Parish sees himself eventually putting small, salon-style outlets in other neighborhoods for patients to get checked and have their teeth cleaned, and if they need bigger work done, they could be referred to one of his main offices.

“They’ve made some rules that allow the hygienist to see patients remotely, as long as the dentist, in real time or afterward, can look at the records afterward,” Parish says, which is especially helpful for patients who are afraid of dentists but sorely need a cleaning or checkup. “A patient can leave here with a kind of roadmap of what they need done, and they don’t ever have to physically shake my hand. That’s kind of amazing for the fearful patient that has white-coat syndrome.”

In any case, having already opened two offices in three years in a competitive market, Parish is in it to win it.

“To come to a Granite Bay market that’s saturated with multiple dentists on every corner, and try and establish a beachhead, is not easy,” he says. “I got a 10-year lease, my kids are here, we have a 13-month-old, we bought a house in February in Ashley Woods. We’re not going anywhere.”

ranite Bay was officially recognized in 1987, but one oak-shaded neighborhood got its start much earlier than that, before the housing boom.

Evidenced by its many long, flat homes in various shades of brown, the Walden Woods neighborhood in eastern Granite Bay has been around since the mid-70s.

Rumor has it, according to homeowner’s association treasurer Netti Johnston, that the original developer was inspired by the old oaks on the property. Taken by the trees’ serenity, it’s said he was reminded of Thoreau’s famed residence on Walden Pond and named the neighborhood Walden Woods. While it doesn’t have a pond, the neighborhood does have 27 acres of common area and over two miles of trails for residents.

THE FAUNA

What it lacks in aquatic habitat, Walden Woods makes up for in proximity to Folsom Lake. Johnston, who moved to the neighborhood in 1998, says the area serves as a thoroughfare for wildlife coming from the state park, including bobcats, foxes, deer and, at least once, a mountain lion.

The neighborhood’s human habitats attempt to remain close to the environment as well.

“When Walden Woods was developed, it was with the idea to do the least amount of change to the natural environment,” Johnston says.

Trees, many of them mature, remain close to roads. Granite outcroppings and boulders dot the landscape. Rather than installing drainage systems on bulldozed land, the natural hills and swales provide the neighborhood’s drainage. The streets are named after bird genera, too: Sitta Lane for nuthatches, Parus Lane for Old World tits, Mimus Lane for mockingbirds, Ardea Way for herons and Calypte Lane for hummingbirds.

THE FLORA

Bill Furnas, who monitors and maintains the neighborhood’s common area, points out tree species as his shoes crunch over mulched the trails. He says the woods are mainly live oak, but contain black oak, buckeyes, elderberry and exactly one valley oak.

According to Furnas, the neighborhood works with a certified forester to maintain

Around late December, in the heart of winter, neighbors burn brush in a designated spot within the woods, paving the way for wildflower seeds to be sprinkled weeks later.

Furnas, versed in taxonomy, points out these too: neon California poppies, sunny coreopsis, orange monkey-pods, purple spiky amaryllis.

Furnas oversees all the maintenance of the trails at Walden Woods, but when it’s time to add some color to the landscape, he isn’t the only one out there. The neighborhood children help with the annual wildflower planting, sprinkling seeds on the ground and marking the area with a personalized stake, so they can return in spring and see their work.

nual Easter Egg Hunt. Now, she says, that number is closer to 60, and activities continue to become more family-centric. The winding streets provide a trick-or-treating treasure trove at Halloween and carriage rides at Christmas. In spring, Furnas gives wildflower tours, educating his neighbors, and in the summer neighbors gather for outdoor movie nights.

Residents can expect this friendliness from the start, according to Butler. In addition to the typical committees — architecture, landscape, activities — Walden Woods has a welcome committee, which gives each new resident a directory of every neighbor’s name and contact information. The HOA also surveys new residents’ interests, encouraging them to get involved however they wish.

“It adds to the ambience of the neighborhood,” Johnston says. “You know who people are and that really adds to the quality of life here, I think.”

Walden Woods may lack the pond and beloved solitude of Thoreau’s famed idyll, but in the eyes of residents like Johnston, Furnas and Butler, that’s just fine.

ost Americans know the main flag rules: don’t let it touch the ground, don’t step on it and definitely don’t burn it. But there’s an entire federal rulebook beyond the basics, the United States Flag Code, created in 1923, and it interprets Old Glory as a living thing.

Vietnam War veteran and Roseville resident Bob Bartholomew has saluted, carried, hoisted or otherwise been involved with a lot of flags. Today, 44 years after his run as a tank commander in the Army, he continues to serve as the commander for Roseville’s American Legion, Post 169.

According to Bartholomew, proper flag display is one of the Legion’s missions. Whether for parades, funerals, public display, clothing, business and home display or discarding the flag when it’s worn, “there’s a protocol for everything,” Bartholomew says.

Flying the flag at home Most people associate the flag with Independence Day and Flag Day, but according to the U.S. Flag Code, it should be flown every day. Public holidays are especially recommended.

Proper flag display is from sunrise, when it should be “hoisted briskly,” to when it’s “lowered ceremoniously” at sunset, according to the flag code. If that’s impractical or difficult, the flag can be kept up overnight as long as it’s lit.

In addition to dark nights, the flag should be taken down in inclement weather, unless the flag’s fabric is all-weather.

Bartholomew says that polyester flags tend to be the toughest and most colorfast, followed by nylon and then cotton. He warns that the California sun can fade colors faster than in other areas, and a faded flag is considered damaged.

Flag-flyers should also take care around thorny plants that can tear the fabric. Bartholomew says plants, yard decor or anything else should not obstruct view of the flag, and Old Glory should not touch anything beneath it.

“Obviously, you never let a flag touch a mud puddle or the ground,” he says. “Sometimes a child might do it, but adults should know better.”

Code mandates that the field — the starred part of the flag — should be up and to the left, whether the flag is hung vertically or horizontally. The only time the field is on the bottom is in times of extreme distress, when life or property are endangered.

Other flag rules • No other flag should be displayed above the US flag, or to the right of it if they’re at equal heights.

• Only staffs with American flags should have eagles at the tip of the staff. Every other flag should have a spike, unless the President is visiting.

• During a time of peace, a flag from one country should not be flown above the flag from another country, according to international usage.

• In parades, public addresses or alongside other flags, Old Glory should be placed to “the flag’s right” of the others — meaning the viewer’s left.

A proper goodbye

For Bartholomew, parade display of the flag sparks some emotion. He’s knowledgeable about home display but is more particular about parade conduct.

He finds it irritating when something besides the flag leads a parade, whether it’s another flag, a troop of police officers on motorcycles or clowns.

“The American flag should lead American parades, not clowns,” he says.

He is also sensitive to how others observe the flag when it passes.

“When I see someone in a wheelchair struggle to get up while able-bodied people don’t, it really bothers me,” he says.

“People die for that flag.”

So, to educate those who may not know any better, a Boy Scout troop has started printing proper protocol on index cards to hand out to audience members, according to Bartholomew.

Most people know to remove their hats and place hands over their hearts when the National Anthem plays, but the same rule applies to a flag passing in parade.

The exception here, Bartholomew says, is active servicemembers or veterans. Instead of removing their hats, these groups can salute the flag instead.

And when a flag’s time is done? There’s a procedure for that, too.

“If it’s torn, tattered or damaged in any way, it should be retired,” Bartholomew says. “But it should be retired properly.”

Post 169 collects damaged, worn-out flags in blue buckets, awaiting a proper ceremony. The retirement is similar to a funeral pyre — fire is seen as the most appropriate way to dispose of old flags.

The protocol varies here. Some organizations burn one flag ceremoniously, representing all flags to be burned at that time. Some will fold flags into triangles before burning. Some will recite patriotic songs while the flag is burning. The version Bartholomew knows states that the flags are torn into strips and then placed into flames. Surrounding observers are to remain solemn, saluting the pieces as they burn. When it’s over, the ashes are buried.

Though Post 169 has dozens of old flags waiting to be retired, Bartholomew said that people should still bring their flags to an organization that will conduct the proper process. Drop-off sites are available at Post 169 and the Roseville Police Department.

But what about the belief that a flag needs to be retired if it ever touches the ground?

Bartholomew says there are a lot of opinions on this issue but offers his stance with certainty: “If you can launder it, you can reuse it.”

Folsom Lake Cleaning up

Collection of debris cited to be the worst since 2006

ver the Memorial Day holiday, several boats were visible on Folsom Lake, enjoying the high temperatures during the three-day weekend.

But it wasn’t just colorful vessels dotting the horizon of the lake. This year, a tremendous amount of debris continues to hamper many areas of the lake as boating season is well underway.

The large amount of debris is driftwood of all sizes, big to small. Many of these can damage the hull or prop of a boat easily and could surely have detrimental results if struck by a personal watercraft at any speed. It’s the results of a record rainfall winter, and officials are working as fast as they can to collect the debris and make the waters safe again.

“Fortunately, there haven’t been any major boat accidents as a result of the driftwood,” said Ryan Steele, peace officer supervisor

of the California Department of Parks and Recreation. “There have been a few boats that have had their props removed or damaged. For those vessels that have a jet system, they can get a twig stuck in there that disables their vessel.”

In May, contractors were working to remove the significant debris, from large tractors and loaders on the shorelines to tugboats in the waters working to corral the logjams for collection. The effort has been ongoing daily from sunup to sundown.

“There’s obviously a large quantity of it. With the winds constantly changing, they’re having to move their operations to different locations to corral all that wood,” Steele said.

If you take a walk along nearly any beach of Folsom Lake, you can’t miss the debris. Twigs, branches and even fullsized trees can be seen piled high at the water’s edge. All of the debris came as an undesirable bonus to the abundant rain and snowfall that is now flowing into the lake from above, collecting the downed trees and branches from years of drought conditions.

Officials had hoped to have all of the debris collected prior to Memorial Day, but conditions have been

described as the worst since 2006 and the cleanup efforts were expected to continue at least through June.

Water-bound crews were expected to have an easier job after Folsom Lake reached its peak in June, at which point the waters would begin to recede and bank much of the debris on the shoreline, making it easier to manage and remove.

The boat docks and ramps of Folsom Lake remain open. While many boaters were reluctant to take to the waters in May, others were out dealing with the challenge. It just takes a combination of patience, caution and common sense.

“We haven’t seen it like this in many, many years,” said Mason Foster, of Folsom, who has been boating on the lake and the Sacramento Delta for more than 12 years. “On the delta, it’s not uncommon to come across objects in the water because of the current. In Folsom, it’s not something we’re used to, because, well, we are not use to seeing water at all.”

Foster headed to the lake over the Memorial Day weekend, but he and his family decided to remove water skiing and wakeboarding from the agenda due to the conditions. What may appear as a floating twig could be an entire branch or tree beneath the surface that could cause serious injury if struck at a moderate speed.

“We didn’t even put them in the boat,

we didn’t want to be tempted, because that’s when accidents happen,” Foster said. “You just have to use your head, take your time and you can still enjoy the lake at a safe speed. Having the high water we have this year to enjoy is a blessing. We just need to be patient while they make sure it’s safe out there.”

As of press time in early June, Folsom Lake was at 95 percent of capacity. Inflow was at 13,825 cubic feet per second, with 6,965 cubic feet per second being released. The inflow-to-outflow ratio was expected to raise the waters to near capacity by early to mid-June.

bout 30 years ago, after discovering her children had chopped down one of her neighbor’s shrubs, Granite Bay resident Jan Sanders knew she had to find a constructive and creative way for her children to fill their time when they weren’t in school.

“Ann was in first grade and John was a fourth-grader. I asked them if they would be interested in starting their own business,” Sanders said. “We came up with the idea of putting on puppet shows. They went around the neighborhood and told everyone we would do it for $5.”

For about two years, Jan assisted her children with puppet shows that become major productions, complete with a stage, multiple puppet characters and elaborate sets. It was a perfect fit for Sanders, a credentialed teacher who has always loved acting, especially the technical aspect.

“I’m extremely outgoing,” Sanders said.

“My father was in the military and we lived all over the world. I think I attended 13 or 14 schools and have always been comfortable meeting new people. In our family we always said, ‘We’ve never met a stranger.’”

Sanders said she thought she wanted to pursue a career in acting, but discovered at an early age that memorizing the lines was a problem for her. Helping Ann and John with their puppet-show business was the perfect way for her to be involved with an audience without having to memorize anything. After her children lost interest in performing with the puppets, Sanders told them she wanted to buy their business.

“We wrote up a contract and I essentially bought them out,” Sanders said. “I began to advertise in the telephone book and started to perform at numerous birthday parties. After several years I decided I wasn’t an entertainer, but an educator. I CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

continued from page 25 wanted to provide an educational experience with my puppet shows.”

With her background in education, Sanders began to perform at school assemblies here in California and in Texas, at schools which Ann’s children now attend. In every show she performs, she tells her young audiences that they have more than one type of intelligence.

“My goal is to empower students,” Sanders said. “I tell them some people learn by listening, some learn visually and others by touch. My puppets help children to learn as I use all three learning methods. The theme of all my shows is, ‘I can do it.’ I like to show the students the most important thing is to be able to create, and the puppets make it easy for people to have a conversation.”

Through the years Sanders developed several puppet characters, 21 in all, including Fluffers, Tudsey Turtle and Camellia Camel, to name a few. She even taught

herself how to be a ventriloquist by reading books she checked out at the library.

Each puppet character has a different personality. Sanders said Fluffers is very naïve and childlike while Camellia Camel is self-centered. With assistance from all her characters, Sanders has helped hundreds of children develop skills to be good writers by discussing what makes a good story in her puppet shows.

“For me, the definition of creativity is to take what you know and put it all together in a new way,” she said. “I like to give my audiences the building blocks to do just that.”

In addition to assemblies and workshops, Sanders has also performed at the annual Young Authors Showcase, sponsored by the Friends of the Granite Bay Library for the last 20 years. The Showcase honors the writing of selected kindergarteners through third-grade children from Greenhills and Oakhills schools.

Granite Bay resident Carolsue Acres, also a former teacher, has known Sanders

for many years. She said she also understands the versatility of puppets and how they can be used to introduce a theme, poem or story.

“I’ve always enjoyed how creative Jan is with her shows,” Acres said. “She demonstrates how to make a puppet out of an ordinary sock, to make props from household items and to use different voices, which her audiences always love.”

Performing puppet shows to encourage creative writing in children isn’t the limit of Sanders’ work. Because of her concern about the amount of violence that many children are exposed to through the media, Sanders developed a 10-week course that helps children to recognize what violence is and how to overcome it, a program she has taught in many schools throughout Northern California.

At the present, Sanders said she is working on compiling all of her shows on the internet so everyone at any time can view.

“Puppets can open the door for so many subjects,” Sanders said.

rior to settling in the United States, owning and operating a wine store-bar in Old Town Folsom with my lovely wife, I had a real job back in Australia working in the corporate world. In Australia, people get four weeks of vacation per year, which gave me the opportunity to pursue one of my passions: exploring wine regions, not only in Australia but around the world.

I have covered territories in France, Italy, Germany, New Zealand and Canada. Yes, Canada. I visited two of the main regions, which very pleasantly surprised me with the quality of their wines.

I spent two months exploring Canada and the mountainous Canadian rockies, skiing Mount Tod, known as Sun Peaks to the French Provence of Quebec.

Just a very short distance from Niagara Falls is one of the cutest towns that I have come across, Niagara-on-the-Lake, home to the George Bernard Shaw Festival which runs from April to October each year.

Just outside the township are over a dozen wineries, many of which produce sparkling wines, a range of whites, a small amount of reds and ice wine.

Traditional ice wines are made by leaving grapes — usually highly aromatic, high-acid varieties like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Vidal Blanc, Sylvaner and even Cabernet Franc — on the vines until temperatures drop to extreme lows of at least 18 degrees Fahrenheit.

The sugars and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does, allowing a more concentrated grape to be pressed from the frozen fruit, resulting in a smaller amount of more concentrated, very sweet wine. These wines are expensive, because only a few drops of juice are extracted from each grape, but well worth a try.

The main wine region in Canada is in British Columbia — the Okanagan Valley, 300 miles east of Vancouver. My two-day planned stay extended to four days after discovering the beauty of the valley and the Okanagan Lake.

There are 120 wineries stretching out along 130 miles of the Okanagan Valley, and many of them overlook Okanagan Lake.

You will not find your big, bold Napa Cabs, as they don’t get the ripening season that we get in California. What you will find is a range of lighter-style red wines, beautiful crisp white wines and a range of sparkling wines.

Even if you don’t drink wine, the sheer beauty of the region is also worth the visit.

f you’ve been interested in fitness and health for more than a minute, then you know by now how important drinking plenty of water is for getting your body into top shape.

But do you drink enough water? And is it really going to impact your results?

WHY WATER MATTERS Your body is made up of 60 percent water, which is incredible when you stop and really think about it. All day long you are constantly losing water by sweating and going to the bathroom, and this water must be replenished in order to keep your body in healthy, working order.

Many health authorities believe in the 8x8 theory: drink eight (eight-ounce) glasses of water throughout the day, or roughly half a gallon. However, a growing sector of fitness and health professionals are speaking out against this theory, stating that it is simply too little to keep you properly hydrated.

Those behind the movement to drink more than 8x8 per day are stating that the only way to truly stay hydrated is by sipping on water constantly throughout the day, and by making the effort to drink water when one doesn’t feel the signs of thirst.

Studies have come out that seem to prove that drinking more water throughout the day leads to better brain functioning, fewer headaches and physical performance.

Conversely, when you are operating in a state of mild dehydration you will experience diminished brain functioning, more frequent headaches and a decline in physical performance.

DOES MORE WATER EQUAL MORE FAT LOSS? Yes, it is quite likely that drinking more water will facilitate faster fat-loss results. This is primarily due to two factors: 1. An increase in metabolism: Studies show that drinking water temporarily boosts metabolism for an hour or so. Drinking cold water will spike your metabolism even higher. This means more calories burned and more pounds lost.

2. A reduction in appetite: Staying properly hydrated helps to reduce dehydration signs that are often mistaken for hunger. It is also a viable strategy to drink a full glass of water immediately before a meal in order to reduce the calorie intake of that meal, leading to lower overall calorie intake for the day.

HYDRATION AND HEALTH Staying hydrated is going to help you lose fat quicker, but that’s not the only benefit that you will experience. The following are all health improvements that you have to look forward

to when drinking water throughout your day: • Lower risk of cancer • Reduction in constipation • Decreased risk of kidney stones • Healthier skin and less acne It’s clear that drinking water throughout the day is an important part of being healthy and reaching your fitness goals. One of the best ways to make sure you meet your hydration goals is to keep a large water bottle with you at all times, and refill it every time it is empty.

Never get caught without water! Think of it as your secret weight-loss weapon.

From fashion to fitness, local trainer goes all-in HO M ETOWN HER OES |

eroes come in all different shapes and sizes. Living in and around Granite Bay, you meet people that touch your life in various ways, and many times these people live in your heart forever. This month my Hometown Hero is a young lady I have known for many years. She has become a hero to many when it comes to health and fitness, and here is her brief story.

When I first met Ms. Lena Geiser, she was a young girl living in Granite Bay and attending Cavitt Stallman Jr. High. Her parents John and Cindy had become friends with my family, her best friends Camille and Melanie were my next-door neighbors and I had the opportunity to see these girls grow up to the fantastic women they have become today.

I watched Lena enter high school, excel in soccer and track and begin to take a serious approach to health and fitness.

After high school, Lena decided to pursue another passion: fashion. She enrolled in a well-known fashion institute in Irvine and graduated with a degree in two years, but the health and fitness bug kept tugging her back. All this time she trained and kept in shape.

After Lena completed fashion school, she started looking for work but the market had changed and jobs were almost nonexistent. To make ends meet, she began a sales job in Los Angeles which relocated her back to Granite Bay. The whole time, she was working out and training. The sales job was not to her liking, and this is when she decided she was going to quit running and follow her heart. She decided to obtain her health training certificate, allowing her to train people.

She jumped right into the work with fantastic results. One of her students is a lady by the name of Susan Steward, now 70 years old, who began training with Lena when she was 65.

Susan says, “While training with Lena, I have acquired better balance, strength and more confidence. Not only do I feel I

have the best trainer, I have acquired a good friend too. I would definitely recommend Lena to anyone who is ready to step up and challenge themselves.”

Over the years Lena grew, challenged herself, sharpened her health, fitness and training goals, grew her database of students and recently, at the age of 28 and with a little help from her parents, she just opened her first gym called “9 Round.” This is a franchise operation that incorporates a positive and intense 30-minute workout routine and kickboxing. The new gym is located off of Sierra College and Rocklin Road.

She is already boasting more than 100 new enrollees, and her goal is to double and triple this number.

I love writing stories like this — of young people who had a dream or goal and doubled down to make it happen, in this case while also helping others to lead healthier and more fulfilling lives. This is what a hometown hero looks like. They come in all shapes and sizes. Congratulations, Ms. Lena Geiser! Our community thanks you for being an inspiration. Keep it up!

Caring Community job training, life skills classes and employment for this vulnerable population, helping them to achieve financial independence and reach their fullest potential.

A "sweet" new non profit is in town and we would love you to join our efforts in bettering the lives of our local aged-out (18 yrs+) foster youth and at-risk young adults in our community.

Kelli Ridenour, former founder and CEO of Kelli's Cookies, was lead to create a non-profit organization after opening her home to a young girl who had transitioned out of foster care. She witnessed firsthand the challenges these youth face on a daily basis, often with no adult role model in their life to help guide them. Imagine trying to transition into adulthood without a caring support system.

Some of the job training we provide is: baking from scratch, food packaging, cash handling, customer service, sales and marketing strategies. Life skills classes will also be offered including: resume writing, budgeting, food safety certification, career coaching and more.

Our trainees will participate in numerous aspects of operating a retail bakery and will help produce our delicious cookies, all made from scratch with the finest ingredients.
