Emphasizing locally grown FARMERS SHOWCASE THEIR BOUNTY

I

t’s the next best thing to picking a bright red strawberry right from the patch and popping it into your mouth.

Every Saturday, dozens of farmers showcase the bounty from their land at the Foothill Farmers Market in Auburn.

You’ll find eggs gathered from the day before — or even that morning. The bread and pastries are freshly baked only a few blocks down the road. The broccoli and spring onions are crisp and green because they were growing in the ground just a few hours earlier.

Auburn’s market is part of the Foothill Farmers Market Association, which also includes sites in Rocklin, Roseville, Granite Bay, Loomis, North Auburn’s DeWitt Center and Tahoe City.

The Auburn and Roseville markets operate year-round.

The others are open from late spring through the summer growing season.

For Foothill Farmers General Market Manager Carol Arnold, the emphasis is on locally grown. The majority of the 85 vendors are located in Placer County.

“We do have some out-of-county vendors and we love them,” Arnold said. “These days we’re only accepting people from the contiguous three counties — Placer, Nevada and

El Dorado. We try really hard to stay with farmers we know.

We really want to support our local agriculture system.

And we, of course, encourage new farms. We have a few vendors who’ve been there from the beginning. But we’re also adding new farms and that’s important.”

Another of Arnold’s goals is to make the markets as user friendly as possible. A Market Match program being introduced in June will allow customers to pay using EBT (Cal Fresh) at the Auburn site.

The Market Match system is funded by a grant facilitated through the Placer Community Foundation. For every $10 in EBT spent at the market, EBT customers will receive a $5 token — with a limit of $20 in tokens for $40 spent. “(The tokens) will be for buying (produce), bread and olive oil,” she said.

The pilot program likely will last through December, with the possibility of an extension if additional funding becomes available.

The planning has been in the works for quite a while.

“I think what this will do is get high-quality food to families and individuals who don’t normally access local food,” she said. “And it will expand the clients for farmers, too.”

The Market Match token program debuts just as the growing season kicks into high gear. At its height in mid-July, the farmers market in Auburn will have 55 to 60 vendors, Arnold said.

In addition to the cornucopia of fruits and vegetables, there are wines from local wineries, locally produced olive oil, fish brought straight from the ocean, and cuts of beef, pork and lamb from local ranchers.

“We’re just starting to move into spring and summer crops,” Arnold said. “We have strawberries, green garlic and spring onions. There are beautiful flowers and beautiful lettuce. We have peony bouquets.”

Expect stone fruit to appear within the next few weeks — peaches, apricots and cherries.

One of the newest vendors is Long Dream Farm, a dairy in Lincoln.

“They sell butter, ice cream, yogurt and fresh ricotta cheese,” she said. “The ice cream is the best you’ve ever had — the butter, too. It’s really a high-quality product.

They also have chickens and eggs.”

Another recent vendor is Loomis-based Produce Alive, which specializes in hydroponics.

“They grow micro-greens, broccoli and arugula, which are super nutritious,” Arnold said.

There’s even pizza — prepared on-site in Bella Familia’s wood-fired oven.

As summer nears, Arnold is planning some special events.

“We actually have a brunch we’re working on, but no date set yet for that,” she said. “There will also be a return of tastings and other fun activities.”

e are so blessed to reside in such an agricultural hub (if you will). There are farmers and ranchers who make it their sole mission to produce quality fruits, veggies, and meats. Lucky for us they all seem to convene at the farmers’ market, which makes it incredibly easy as a consumer to shop for only the best and most nutritious ingredients.

MAKES 6 SCONES

BERRY SCONES

INGREDIENTS:

3 cups of gluten-free rolled oats ½ cup coconut flour ¼ cup + 2 tbsp raw sugar 1 tbsp baking powder 1 tsp Pink Himalayan salt ¼ cup + 2 tbsp chilled coconut oil 1 cup chilled almond milk (I prefer unsweetened) 2/3 cup berries (I chose raspberries for one half and blueberries for the other) INSTRUCTIONS:

I decided to visit out local farmers’ market for some fresh produce to make some summer treats both classic and unconventional. It’s like finding treasure when the fruits and veggies needed are in season and they are ripe to perfection. I highly recommend frequenting any farmers’ market to support the local ag and, bonus; you get something tasty every time.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a blender, pulse the oats until they are fine flour Measure out 2 cups and keep the rest for dusting.

5. Pour into a large bowl and add coconut flour, raw sugar, baking powder, and salt.

6. Add chilled coconut oil and mash it in the mixture with a fork until crumbs form.

7. Add the chilled almond milk and mix well.

8. Use leftover flour and sprinkle on a flat surface.

Roll dough into ball and kneed several times.

9. Split dough in half.

10. Place 1/3 cup of berries in each half and gently mix blend. I did one half blueberries, the other strawberry.

11. Make a 1-inch thick circle out of each batch and slice into 6 triangles.

12. Place onto lined baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes.

13. Let cool before transferring.

14. Once completely cool, serve, and enjoy!

PASTA PRIMAVERA SERVES 4-6 INGREDIENTS

1 bag of fettuccini noodles * I use gluten-free rice noodles 2 large heads of broccoli 1 green bell pepper 2 zucchinis 1 garlic clove, minced ½ yellow onion 2 tbsp grass-fed butter 1 cup Parmesan Pink Himalayan salt and pepper to taste DIRECTIONS

1. Add water and a pinch of salt to a large pot and place on stove.

2. Add noodles and boil until soft. *Careful gluten-free can turn mushy very quickly. Test often.

3. Drain noodles once cooked and place back in the pot.

4. Add olive oil to a medium skillet and allow to heat.

5. Place chopped onion and minced garlic in hot oil and cook until fragrant.

6. Add chopped broccoli, zucchini, and bell pepper, sauté until soft.

7. Add veggies to pot with noodles and stir with butter and Parmesan.

8. Serve with another sprinkle of cheese, salt, and pepper.

9. Enjoy!

COCONUT POPS INGREDIENTS

1 ½ cups of raw coconut water 1 large lime juiced 1 lemon for zest 1 large handful of strawberries sliced 1 large handful of blueberries sliced DIRECTIONS

1. In a large bowl combine coconut water, lime juice, and zest.

2. Slice all of the fruit into thin pieces and arrange in a Popsicle mold. Feel free to mix-and-match fruits.

3. Pour the coconut water mixture over the fruit to cover.

4. Cover, place sticks, and freeze until solid.

5. Serve immediately once removed from mold. Wouldn’t want them to melt!

S

nacks, alcohol, toiletries and frozen food items line the walls of the store, but one aspect makes them stand out from any other minimart: the deli.

The Fast Pak Market in Penryn has been around for more than 30 years, with loyal customers flocking there day in and day out.

The owner Ly Ou, bought the store in 1991 and has been working there with her family ever since.

Her deviled eggs and bacon avocado sandwiches are a local favorite, with people driving from near and far to get it, said Ou. “Amazing deviled eggs, world famous, as a matter of fact I’ll have one now,” said customer Rob Erickson. “I’ve

lived here my whole life, I have been coming here forever. It is a great place with great people.”

The store has about five employees, all family members of Ou. The Fast Pak Market frequently stocks items that customers request, such as baking materials, produce and knick knacks.

“Everybody in Penryn is really friendly, we know most of our customers by name,” said Ou’s son Porkhun Chheu. “The people are very interesting and we talk to them about their day.”

Tony Schrick has been visiting the Fast Pak Market for the last 25 years, buying lottery tickets and hanging out with the family.

“It pays to come here,” joked Schrick who has won $8,000 and $16,000 from a ticket he bought at the store.

Schrick raved about the ham and cheese sandwich but his favorite part is the relationship he has built with the family.

“I’ve watched her grandbaby grow up, her kids,” said Schrick.” This is what life is about, the friendships you make.”

Ou has become semi-retired, only working part time and allowing her family to take over more of the responsibilities, but when she is there she enjoys every minute.

“You know, most of the customers are friendly and they turn into friends and family now,” she said.

Ou knew she loved Penryn the moment she got there and decided the Fast Pak Market is where she would stay.

“That is where I will work until I retire,” said Ou. “I work hard but it makes the day go by really fast.”

Sitting right outside of the market is a bench adorned with a longtime customers picture and “In loving memory of Phil Gordon.”

Ou said he visited the store every day and when he passed away customers came together to purchase

the bench in his memory, showing the community aspect the store has.

Customers come and go throughout the day, some don’t even have to speak, Ou and her family just know what they want.

“It has been a staple for me to come here,” said Erickson.

With Ou taking a step back, a new employee has come in, but the Penryn community gives her the same love that they give everyone else.

“I really love it,” said Bo Lim, who has been working at the store for a few months. “The customers and the people around here are really nice. No one ever gives me a hard time, I really love all of it.”

Team Giving inspires compassion NONPROFIT CONNECTS VOLUNTEERS WITH SERVICE CLUBS, BUSINESSES, COMMUNITY PROJECTS

ere are two simple facts: Community service projects need volunteers; and volunteers need community service projects. The solution for the frequent disconnect between these two is simple as well: Team Giving.

Newcastle’s Team Giving is a nonprofit that connects individuals with projects in and around Placer County.

“It’s almost like Match.com for nonprofits,” said Moreen Lane, a Team Giving board member. “Basically we take members of the community and really give them the opportunity to experience volunteerism. It’s ridiculously wonderful.”

Team Giving, founded by Trudy Harris and Cynthia Woods in 2016, creates the potential for lasting impact in the community.

“We want to offer a simple and coordinated path where volunteers can find their passion and make that connection,” Harris said. “Our long-term goal is that if someone is helping at an organization and sees they love it, then they become a partnership.”

Since February of last year, Team Giving has partnered with 38 nonprofit organizations in Placer and Sacramento counties, and coordinated more than 600 volunteers. The nonprofit will be funded through a Bay Area group for the first few years of operation.

After that, the team will rely solely on grants and donations.

“I think volunteering is incredibly important,” said Michelle Doupe, executive assistant at Team Giving. “I wanted to be a part of Team Giving because volunteering is something I was already passionate about … and I have been a volunteer and didn’t know where to go.”

Doupe has been working at Team Giving since February.

Harris said there are other organizations like Team Giving in larger cities, but none with the hands-on approach that her staff offers.

“We try and take all the busy work out of it,” said Harris. “We’re unique; personal.”

T

he Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run is considered to be the one of the most physically challenging races in the world. The 100.2 mile course covers the middle portion of the Western States Trail, starting at Squaw Valley and finishing at Placer High School in Auburn. Racers climb 18,000 feet and descend almost 23,000 feet through deep canyons and high mountains, much of which is only accessible by foot, horse or helicopter.

RACE DETAILS About the trail The Western States Endurance Run is so epic it’s created a world-famous endurance path known as the “Western States Trail,” a nationally dedicated recreational trail that stretches from Salt Lake City to Sacramento.

Beginning in Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympic Games, the trail ascends from the valley floor (elevation 6,200 feet) to Emigrant Pass (elevation 8,750 feet), a climb of 2,550 vertical feet in the first 4½ miles. From the pass, following the original trails used by the gold and silver miners of the 1850s, runners travel west, climbing another 15,540 feet and descending 22,970 feet before reaching Auburn in the heart of gold country. Most of the trail passes through remote and rugged territory.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN 1955 — The late Wendell T. Robie with a party of five horsemen rode the Western States Trail from the post office in Tahoe City to Auburn, proving that horses could still cover 100 miles in one day. Through his energy and vision, he subsequently founded the Western States Trail Foundation and organized the annual Western States Trail Ride, also known as the Tevis Cup “100 Miles – One Day” Ride.

1974 — With the inspiration and encouragement of Drucilla Barner, the first woman to win the Tevis Cup and Secretary of the WSTF, Tevis veteran Gordy Ainsleigh joined the horses of the Western States Trail Ride to see if he could complete the course on foot. Twenty-three hours and 42 minutes, later Gordy arrived in Auburn, proving that a runner could indeed traverse the rugged 100 miles in one day.

1975 — a second runner, Ron Kelley, attempted the same feat, only to withdraw within two miles of the finish with ample time remaining. In 1976, Ken “Cowman” Shirk ran the 100 miles, finishing just 30 minutes over the 24-hour mark.

1977 — 14 men from four states participated in the first official Western States Endurance Run, which was held in conjunction with the Tevis Cup Ride. Runners were monitored by Dr. Bob Lind at the three veterinary stops set up for the horses, and although the race organization transported the entrants gear, runners were responsible for producing all of their own supplies, except water. Three runners finished the course: Andy Gonzales, age 22, in the record-breaking time of 22:57, and Peter Mattei and Ralph Paffenbarger, ages 53 and 54, who tied in 28:36 (and the 30-hour award was born).

In the fall of 1977, the Board of Directors for the Western States Endurance Run was formed as part of the Western States Trail Foundation. It was made up primarily of the handful of runners and riders who had helped monitor the progress of the 14 pioneers earlier that summer. The run organization later became its own entity and is now known as the Western States Endurance Run Foundation.

1978 — Heralded a dramatic increase in both interest and participation in the Western States Run. Culminating a year-long effort by the inspired Gang of Four (Phil Gardner, Mo Livermore, Shannon Weil, and Curt Sproul) to create an independent event, the race took place in June, a month earlier than the Tevis Cup Ride. The event mushroomed to include 21 aid stations and six medical checks, thanks to an ever-growing corps of loyal volunteers and the support of the Placer County Sheriff ‘s Communications Reserve and the Search and Rescue Unit. Sixty-three adventurers ran the race, and the first woman, Pat Smythe, finished in 29:34.

1979 — 143 runners from 21 states and three foreign countries attempted the course. Since then, the run has reached its full entrance quota and draws athletes from across the nation and around the world.”

Awards All Western States entrants who finish the Run in full accordance with the rules qualify for one or more awards given in recognition of their achievement.

1. The first official male and female runner to cross the finish line within 24 hours will be the winner of the Wendell Robie Cup, a perpetual trophy on which the victor’s name will be engraved.

2. The first male and female finishers will each be awarded the bronze Western States Cougar Trophy.

3. Additional age-group awards will be given to the top three men and women in the following categories: 39 and under; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69, and 70 and over.

4. All finishers in under 24 hours will receive the handmade silver Western States Endurance Run belt buckle.

5. All finishers who finish in a time of 24 hours but under 30 hours will receive the handmade bronze Western States Endurance Run belt buckle to commemorate their achievement.

6. All official finishers will receive an attractive finisher’s medallion.

7. The oldest male and female finishers will receive special awards presented by Dr. Walter and Ruth Ann Bortz.

8. Runners crossing the finish line after the 30-hour cutoff will not be listed as official finishers.

Old town Auburn Start off by chowing down pancakes lovingly prepared by the Auburn Fire Department. The annual Pancake Breakfast is served from 7 to 11 a.m. in the Bootlegger’s parking lot.

T

he California Bluegrass Association presents its 42nd Annual Fathers’ Day Festival June 15-18 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley.

As in years past, this year’s event features a lineup of top touring bluegrass bands and five of California’s best bluegrass and old-time music groups. The festival offers four days of entertainment on three stages plus nonstop jam sessions by music-playing fans on the camping areas.

Among the major bands that will be appearing are: Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Bobby Osborne & Rocky Top X-Press, Molsky’s Mountain Drifters, Tony Trischka Territory, Becky Buller Band, Mipso, Piedmont Melody Makers, Sawmill Road, The Freight Hoppers, Darin and Brooke Aldridge, Barefoot Movement, and The Blue Js. Five West Coast bands will appear on the main stage this year as the California Showcase. These bands are: Crooked Jades, The Brombies, David Thom, Burning Heart Bluegrass, and Matt and George and their Pleasant Valley Boys.

Each year the fairgrounds at Grass Valley begins filling up with tents and RVs on the Sunday before the festival begins. Many are there for a three-day music instructional camp that runs through Wednesday, but most just arrive early to play music, 26

hang out with old friends and meet new ones.

Tents dominate the camping grounds under the pines and RVs and campers create an aluminum and steel village around the rest of the grounds.

Dozens of volunteers spend the week prior to the festival erecting the big main stage and preparing the two smaller stages.

On Wednesday, the festival’s vendors arrive, setting up booths in the food area to offer coffee, sausages, Asian food, vegetarian fare, Mexican food, crepes, and very popular snow cones and ice cream. There are also booths with vendors of hats, apparel, jewelry, crafts and musical instruments and supplies.

Inside of the fairground buildings is a luthiers’ pavilion, where they display beautiful handmade guitars, banjos, mandolins, fiddles, and basses.

They also offer instrument setup and repair services.

The California Bluegrass Association Father’s Day Festival is a family-friendly event. For children learning to play an instrument, the “Kids on Bluegrass” program works up songs beginning on Thursday and performs on the main stage Friday and Saturday — a big thrill for the kids and the audience.

uburn’s Party in the Park started 17 years ago, when then new Auburn Recreation and Park District (ARD) Board member Scott Holbrook had an idea. Holbrook, one who’s passion for live music was only superseded by his passion for family, wanted to find a way to join the two together for at least one fun night for all in the community. The concept was basic, put on a concert where parents can enjoy some very talented bands, provide some good food and beverages and a fun place for the kids to play, and to make it free.

Well, it sounded good when he brought it up, but the realities of making this happen were a little more tricky. Thankfully for all, the idea had some good supporters out there.

Calls were made, emails sent, knocks on doors agenda items and more started the task of getting sponsors and co-hosts to make this concept a reality. The calls were answered, and many hopped on board. Local service clubs were on board, and many local businesses put a signature on a check.

The first year the rickety stage was borrowed from the fairgrounds, a few lights were borrowed and Mumbo Gumbo agreed to kick off the fun ... year one was a tremendous success.

Over the years Party in the Park has maintained its grass roots character, but has presented some world renowned entertainment, from Americana to Zydeco thousands of drinks have been poured, even more hot dogs, burgers consumed, countless calories danced off and the fun looks to continue. The third Friday in June is the designated date, most are out

This year the party will be rockin’ and rollin’ with the music of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performed by the most recognized interpreters of Tom’s music; “Petty Theft,” opening the fun at 6 p.m. will be the Killer Queens, an all-girl tribute to the music of Queen.

The beer booth is provided by Lagunitas Brewery and Poured by the Rotary, the kid zone will provide

a great variety of fun, from climbing walls to water slides, the food court will be highlighting everything from pho to pizza. Folks can bring their own picnics if they wish, but organizers encourage all to support the vendors, as all purchases go to support some great causes and the party itself.

Again, Party in the Park is free to attend, though there are some reasonable costs for the kid zones. Note that no outside alcohol is allowed, nor are glass containers.

hen we think about the Sierra Foothills wineries, we normally come up with Amador County and El Dorado County.

The forgotten children are the wineries in Nevada County. With over 20 of them located over a vast area, it is well worth the weekend trip. Check out sierravinters.com for listings and profiles of all the wineries.

Way off the beaten path is one of our favorite: Naggiar Vineyards. It’s well worth the drive along scenic and historic Route 49, and just before the vineyard is a bison ranch, where you can see bison grazing in the fields.

The winery is on a picturesque 135-acre estate, of which 60 are under vine, growing 18 different varietals, together with a traditional Tuscan-style tasting room and bistro.

The bistro is only open Fridays through Sundays, with live music on Saturday nights.

All their wines are grown, produced and bottled on the estate. They offer traditional Rhone, Bordeaux and Italian varietals. Not all the fruit from the vines are processed by Naggiar, but many world-famous California wineries source fruit from Naggiar because of their exceptional quality.

Naggiar Vineyards offers tours of their estate for a small cost. These tours last 45 minutes and allow guests to get up close and personal with the vines. It’s an exciting experience, to learn a bit about how varietals differ in growing conditions, ripening style and harvesting technique.

Naggiar Vineyards was recently voted Sacramento Region’s Best Winery by KCRA3 viewers for an unprecedented seventh consecutive year, so they must be doing something right.

he million-dollar question these days is: “How do I retire early?”

Ironically this question seems to become more popular as life expectancies in the United States are increasing. This not only gives us the challenge of funding our retirement sooner, but also for a longer period of time.

Approaching retirement can be daunting so let’s over simplify it and break down the three things you can be doing right now.

Save more.

This is a “duh.” Just remember there is no silver bullet for retirement. At the end of the day, you must save something.

This is probably the most important on this list. You must have something to pull income from in retirement and you have to have something to earn growth on leading up to retirement.

Spend less.

This one is a bummer that I typically don’t talk about.

There are three types of money: Accumulated money, lifestyle money and transferred money. I don’t ever like to touch or take away from lifestyle money. It is important to enjoy the journey to and through retirement. It is also important to live within your means though, especially if you want to retire early and fully enjoy a long retirement.

Earn a higher rate of return.

This is last on the list. “Rate of return” gets the lion share of credit when it comes to finances, and it really shouldn’t.

Let’s look at an example of a 50-year-old making $100k a year hoping to retire at age 60 with $350k saved and $20k being saved annually. Let’s say their portfolio is earning 8 percent a year and they will retire on $70k a year. We aren’t considering social security or a possible pension, but this person would run out of money at age 75 as is. To stretch those dollars saved to age 90 would require a 16.79 percent annual rate of return. That just isn’t practical. If they didn’t have any return on their savings at all, the money would only last to age 67. Earning growth on your money is important like the other two points above, it just won’t get you all the way through retirement on its own.

We have obviously over-simplified how to retire early.

There are other factors that go into prepping for retirement such as tax and debt service efficiencies, but these are the foundation of a sound retirement. These three components also work together in perfect harmony to give you the retirement you have always wanted.

Standing tall in the blues tradition

He’s a musical soul searcher.

British blues hall-of-famer Matt Schofield reaches intrinsic, soulful depths in his music and is always reaching further.

Those who love Schofield’s music are amongst the ones who actively seek something more than the mainstream. They’re music lovers who are invested in discovering music; those who are seeking deeper into the blues.

“Blues is a language,” Schofield said.

“As we draw on the same vocabulary, we all find a way to use language.

Really that’s all we’re doing, expressing ourselves as an individual. It’s a lifelong journey finding that sound.”

That journey started for Schofield when his father showed him a video of B.B. King with Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

“When my dad showed me the video, with them jamming together, they were all amazing and they all sounded completely different, unique,” Schofield said. “That was the most important thing to me, to have a unique style. And being able to hear where somebody’s come from, to hear people’s influences. That’s what I look for when I listen to people. That’s what I strive for myself.”

Schofield’s first U.S. tour was in 2010.

That same year, he was awarded guitarist of the year and album of the year at the British Blues Awards. He would be honored with guitarist of the year again in 2011 and 2012.

His fifth and latest studio album is dubbed “Far As I Can See.”

“It’s basically everything I wanted to put on a record all at once,” said Schofield. “We just started making a record because we wanted to. There’s an innocent aspect, quite free. There’s straight up blues, the funky stuff, jazz … . Everything that I love. I don’t know when I’ll be able to make another one as broad as that.”

Band members performing with Schofield at this show will be Aaron Glueckauf on drums, Rodrigo “Digo” Zambrano on bass, and James Pace on organ.

“I’ve been doing a few different things lately,” Schofield said.

Doing things differently is just part of Schofield’s musical search; of reaching further, being unique and standout out.

Friend of Folsom Matt Schofield was born in Manchester, England on Aug. 21, 1977, and began playing guitar at the age of 12.

He used to spend summers in the Folsom area where his father worked for Intel.

He loves the foothills, and notes his travels along Highway 49.

“It’s my home away from home since I was a kid. I have many great friends and past band members there.”
