AirFest ready for take off Lincoln Airport hosts planes, jets SUBMITTED BY RICHARD PEARL

Controlled Chaos. This may best describe what it takes to organize and execute a modern, full-fledged air show.

An airshow is returning to Lincoln June 10 at Lincoln Regional Airport. Technically, the event is labeled Lincoln AirFest, to reflect the family-friendly atmosphere, but there should be no mistake, this is a full air show with professional aerial and military performances, a wide range of specialty aircraft on static display, and a huge STEM(science, technology, engineering and mathematics)-oriented Youth Aerospace Expo.

“Last year there were no aerobatics, but the overall event and the crowds were terrific. This year, with the aerobatics, military aircraft, and a larger Youth Expo, people are going to be really blown away, and we’ve made the ticket price very family-friendly, reflecting our efforts in creating a show that will be enjoyed by all,” Media Director Shannon Boivert said.

Kicking off the event is Friday evening’s ( June 9) Golden Gala, a semi-formal, Gatsby-era, golden age of aviation-themed dinner dance in one of the airport’s hangars, converted to hold the event. A swing band, buffet dinner and a costume contest highlight this limited-seating night’s entertainment (pictured on the cover are Richard Pearl, executive director of the AirFest, and wife Penny Pearl, gala director, in costumes, with other key event leaders).

Air shows require exquisite coordination of many constantly moving parts. The opening ceremony is timed literally to the second, as the parachutist (part of the Air Force Academy’s Wings of Blue team) descends with the American flag to the last notes of CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

And then there’s the arrival and staging of 60-plus specialty aircraft, the setting up the Youth Aerospace Expo’s exhibits (a real space suit from Beale, flight simulators, science exhibits and more), the lining up the Rods and Relics classic cars, getting all the vendors and gourmet food trucks in place, and on and on.

The coordination effort doesn’t stop there. The Federal Aviation Administration, local police and fire teams, the City Public Works and airport staff are all integral to producing a safe and fun experience.

“An air show is like a helicopter … a thousand parts all moving in different directions but somehow the darn thing flies,” AirFest Director Richard Pearl said with a smile.

It takes a community of volunteers (more than 125) and

that’s what makes Lincoln such a special place! The entrance gate processing team, the parking and traffic team, the aircraft movement team, the setup and takedown team, the marketing, finance, volunteer management teams. For AirFest 2017, volunteers organize the entire event, with only the professional air boss receiving any compensation.

So why is the AirFest team so committed to this event? Air shows are certainly about aircraft, but they’re really about seeing the look of wonder at the aerial wizardry on faces from 8 to 80.

For the older generations, it’s also a time to reflect on earlier days, as exemplified by aircraft from the 1930s, the 1940s and up to the modern era.

When the last performance is over and the last airplane departs, what will endure is the final beneficiary of the event — the next generation of aviators — as all net proceeds will go for youth aviation scholarships. ❖

FRESH PICKS AT FARMERS’ MARKET

illie Jean Salle, organizer of Lincoln’s two farmers’ markets, begins planning months ahead of time, while many of the fruits and vegetables she and her family grow are still in the ground.

It’s not as hard as being a farmer but it is close.

“You think you’re going to have a certain crop at a certain date but, no matter what you plant or when, Mother Nature is in control,” Salle said. “Apricots and plums will be a little light this year. It was raining during the bloom.”

“The vegetable growers are loving it,” Salle added. “They weren’t hit hard.”

Salle said farmers must be flexible and be willing to reinvent themselves sometimes if they want to sell their produce when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. An early heat wave, she said, can sunburn young plants that don’t have enough foliage.

“Here’s what you do: Introduce a new product,” Salle said. “Walnuts are a big part of our income. Last year, we had a lot of dark and black nuts because of the heat. They are sweeter but have a shorter shelf life. We marketed them as gourmet because of the sweeter taste. Normally, they would be discarded.”

Salle said she owes her success to the dirt on their Wheatland land.

“When we moved here 26 years ago, my husband said the dirt was so good you could eat it,” Salle said. “Centuries ago, this was river bottom. Practically everything we put in the ground does well, except highly acid-loving plants like rhubarb and blueberries.”

Salle added that she has planted fewer root crops because of gophers.

For this year’s two farmers’ markets, Salle said she expects to have at least two vendors for each fruit or vegetable.

“Everybody should have a little bit of competition and the customer should have a choice,” Salle said. “We try to have two of each product, I don’t believe in monopolies.”

“I encourage vendors to give samples and I encourage customers to taste,” Salle added.

For the Thursday night markets, because of the heat, Salle tells her vendors to begin selling at 4:30 p.m. if they are ready. On exceptionally hot days, the farmers must sell all their produce because some of it won’t be sellable the next day.

“On Thursdays, a lot of the produce is picked that morning,” Salle said. “Highly perishable items, like berries, are picked the day before and refrigerated.”

Included among Salle’s responsibilities are organizing the farmers and vendors, filing for permits and paying $2 per day per vendor to fund the certification process.

“There is a lot of paperwork,” Salle said. “We growers are monitored and can be inspected at any time. Almost yearly I have to deal with someone who is cheating.”

Cheating, Salle said, comes in the form of vendors selling produce they did not grow themselves. The local agriculture commissioner is responsible for the policing.

“I’ve been inspected several times,” Salle said. “It is very competitive.”

Salle said many of the same vendors will be at the Lincoln Farmers’ Market this year, such as fish, bread and other baked goods, as well as a few non-produce vendors, such as cheese.

And, Salle said, cherries and early peaches are almost ready.

“It’s about a week to 10 days early for both,” Salle said. “The window for cherries depends on heat and rain. Also, cherries need to be picked with the stem on; otherwise it leaves an open wound. Cherries are one of the most fragile crops. The spring bird migration was little late this year and I hope we can get the cherries in before the birds find them.”

Other items that should be available at the Lincoln Farmers’ Markets include strawberries, peaches, berries, tomatoes, local honey and a “nice cross-section of seasonal variety.”

“Everyone is excited,” Salle said. “It should look the same with a couple of new products added. I’m hoping to have at least the same amount of vendors, if not more.”

The Thursday night farmers’ market will once again feature a weekly drawing with an assortment of produce from all of the vendors. Most of the farmers at both markets also accept credit and debit cards.

Alison Santiago, the events and membership manager for the Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce, said the downtown farmers’ market will include weekly musical acts and a children’s play area.

“So far, we have a few new vendors of clothing and jewelry,” Santiago said. “The layout will be the same and we are all excited about this year’s farmers’ market.” ❖

Gear up for PART ONE

Whether hike or bike, Lincoln has it

ith the exception of this past winter and what more might be in store this spring, California is generally ideal for outdoor activity. And in spite of a very large population and that population’s passion for cars, hiking and biking are two very popular activities in this state.

Lincoln is no exception. And to the city’s and community’s credit, it makes an effort to blend residents, cars, hikers and bikers into peaceful harmony.

Two columnists for The Lincoln News Messenger write about the subjects of hiking and biking, lending their talents in helping to maintain that harmony. Tom Frady of “The Bike Column” fame and Kirby Desha, who does Kirby’s Katch, both put their thoughts to paper to help locals know where to go to enjoy either the walk or the ride.

This month Lincoln view features cycling in Lincoln.

“Generally speaking, this part of Placer Country is fabulous for bike riding if you’re a serious cyclist,” Frady said. “There is a group that stays on the bike paths and they stay on the smooth roads (in Lincoln).”

The group Frady was referring to is exclusive to Lincoln Hills but his point was

The city of Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department, located at 2010 First St. (the intersection of First Street and Joiner Parkway) has a map that shows all the bike paths of Lincoln. It even includes proposed bike paths and where bike racks are located.

Of course, there are many reasons for you to get on your bike. Fun, fitness, friends. Lower your carbon foot print. Save money. Be cool.

If you live and work in the same town, give it a try.

For Lincoln and Loomis bikers, your ride will most likely be flat.

If you have not been on your bike for a while, set a goal for 100 miles for a month. Get on your bike after work three or four times a week, even if you have time to ride just three or four miles.

Try a little longer ride on Saturday. Grab your kids and next-door neighbor. In fact, if you can convince someone else to take up the challenge, it will be easier.

Some of the best bike riding in the state is right here in Placer County. This time of year is to give cycling a try.

BIKE PATH ETIQUETTE Cyclists need to give enough room when passing on a narrow bike path.

Recent legislation effective this September requires motorists to give cyclists a 3-foot buffer when passing. It is a good reminder for cyclists to give pedestrians similar space.

Miners Ravine Trail and its tributaries run from Sierra College Boulevard in Roseville all the way to Highway 80 and beyond, taking riders safely under several major streets and highways. After a short run on Harding, cyclists can pick up the Antelope Creek Trail to Rocklin.

Of course, the American River Bike Trail from Beal Point to Old Sacramento is famous. There must be 75 places to enter from streets. At times, my bike group uses these trails, plus the shorter paths here in Lincoln that run through all the new housing developments.

I love seeing our paths being used by all ages. Generally speaking, bikes are the fastest components on a MultiUse Path (MUP). While not often posted, the speed limit on most paths is 15 mph. Riding aggressively or racing CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

POTTERS SETTLE INTO LINCOLN BASEBALL SEASON HAS ARRIVED

diverse contingent of Lincoln officials, citizens, owners and baseball fans gathered on the infield of the new baseball stadium being constructed last November at McBean Park.

The meeting was to introduce the resurrection of Lincoln’s former baseball team — the Potters.

The new team is part of the Great West League: Chico Heat, Marysville GoldSox, Medford Rogues and Portland Pickles. The Sacramento Stealth and Lodi Crusher were part of the league last year but are undergoing efforts to renovate their ballparks and will be inactive in 2017.

The Great West League is a wood-bat summer league playing 60 games. The teams are made of largely of college players looking to stay active during the off-season. Joining the Potters this season is Lincoln’s Isaiah Garcia.

“I’m just excited. You know, I played Little League here at this field … . I played at Lincoln High School,” Garcia said during the ceremony. “I’m just excited to be able to come back and play in front of the community, my family, friends and just excited to be a part of this summer.”

Garcia is now playing for Sierra College in Rocklin and was on the 2015 Lincoln High baseball team that won the Pioneer Valley League pennant and the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championship.

Also attending the event was one of the Potters’ original players, Leroy Stevens. Stevens was a left-handed pitcher, who eventually went on to pitch for the Sacramento Solons.

“Well, it’s great,” Stevens said as to the revival of the Potters. “We played over at the high school and no lights.”

By the time the original field at McBean Park was completed, Stevens said interest in the Potters was in decline. He said baseball on television and the completion of Folsom Reservoir drew away a lot of their fans.

After a time, even some of the players began to drift away.

“When we got the park … the enthusiasm of the people and some of the baseball players were on the margin,” Stevens said.

“They would go fishing or go to Folsom Lake instead of showing up. That just kind of deteriorated the whole situation.”

Also present at the Potters presentation was William Jessup University athletic director Lance Von Vogt. The Warriors baseball team was hoping to use the stadium for fall ball but is traveling instead.

“It gives us a home. We’re looking to build our baseball program and we’re looking to become a national power in all the

sports that we participate in and baseball is our newest sport that we launched just two short years ago,” Von Vogt said. “So this gives them a home field and community and it expands our footprint into Lincoln in a more intentional way. We love the city of Lincoln and we’re excited to be here.”

By the time the Potters begin play in June, William Jessup’s season will be over. The Potters may also include some of the Warriors’ players, since Golden State Athletic Conference play concluded in April and the postseason wrapped up in May.

The Potters are owned by Lincoln’s Clifton Taylor and Bill Stewart, who also owns the Portland Pickles and a couple of minor league hockey teams. Stewart said he spends much of his time on the road and had to listen to the World Series and national election results on his car radio.

Stewart said he was a little concerned that promoting a California team might have consequences in Oregon. But after visiting McBean Stadium he decided the travel time would be worth it.

“I’m going to live in Portland half the time and live the other half here in Lincoln. I’m going to travel a lot.”

BEFORE Home inspections can save buyers hundreds YOU BUY Do I really need a home inspection?

Well, if you are buying a home, the easy answer to that is: Yes!

In most residential real estate contracts, there is an inspection contingency time period that gives you the right to hire a professional inspector to go through the home so you can judge if you are about to make a wise investment. The contingency is put in place so if your inspection reveals expensive repairs or damage that you weren’t aware of, you can cancel the contract without losing your deposit.

A cancellation rarely happens if you have a good agent that can see warning signs from an initial showing or can negotiate repairs, buyer credits or a combination of both. Don’t expect that the home you are buying is going to be perfect. There will always be a few things to address, even on the cleanest properties.

Not all home inspectors are equal. As the buyer you have the right to choose your inspector, but your agent may give you recommendations of companies that they trust to do a good job for you.

A good home inspection in our area will start at about $400 for an average home and go up in price depending on size and what needs to be inspected. There can be additional charges for crawling under a raised foundation or inspecting items that are out of the scope of the regular inspection.

With country property, there are additional components that you will want inspected. A well test, septic tank inspection and pumping are a few examples.

A good inspector can take about three hours to do a complete inspection on an average home.

At the end, they will do a walk-through with you to reveal the findings that they feel are most important for you to know. These will include health and safety issues. Even with a very clean home, you can expect a complete report to be 40-50 pages long and include pictures of their findings.

I always encourage my buyers to come to the walk-through as questions can be asked and answered and the inspector’s explanations can make a lot more sense when you are in front of the items in question. It is much better to be there than trying to go through an intimidating report with terminology you may not understand.

The inspections are visual and non-intrusive.

This means the inspector won’t rip open a wall with water damage to see what is behind it. They will point out issues and sometimes give you an idea of what may have caused it. That being said, a good inspector will look at every possible place he can get to, including the attic.

They will inspect appliances that stay with the home and the heat and air systems. Their report usually gives serial numbers, age of component and filter size if applicable.

Over the years, I have seen some very good inspectors in action. Their findings, along with the real estate agent’s negotiations on repairs or credits, usually more than pay for the cost of the inspection. Most important, you are better informed and able to make a decision with peace of mind that your investment is going to be a good one. Get a home inspection!
