New doc takes over Granite Bay Veterinary Clinic

Those familiar with Granite Bay Veterinary Clinic, upon returning, are likely to recognize no change at first — a little gray-blue building set back from Douglas Boulevard in an open gravel lot, surrounded by careful landscaping with flowers and a painted sign outside, and inside a greeting from receptionist Donna Rapolla. But come appointment time, a new face will emerge from the back office, and there may be more exotic guests in the waiting room than before.

r. Sarah Bradley, 39, of Folsom, took over Dr. Robert Mansfield’s old vet clinic April 21, the day after he retired. She did so knowing the staff and the practice, and also knowing how she wanted to make it her own. She had been thinking about veterinary science since she was 6, growing up in Citrus Heights.

“I always loved animals, always wanted to help them, so as I got older I just decided that was what interested me,” she recalled. “I did a senior project in high school with a local vet, and then started my first job in college with a cat hospital and worked there all through vet school.”

Bradley finished her undergrad at UC Davis and vet school at Oklahoma State before coming back to Northern California to start her career. She worked for All About Pets in her home town for about 10 years, then at a practice in Granite Bay for 15 months before she found an ideal setup to start her own.

“I really liked the area, liked the clientele, it’s close to where I live, so everything worked out. And then this came up for sale, and it was just a perfect fit,” she said.

Bradley was thrilled with this, being a fan of the staff, but also because it was in keeping with her vision for the clinic as a neighborhood business that would retain all the old patients on file. She had a few ideas to recruit new ones, too: For example, she thought Mansfield’s prices were a little steep and wanted her practice to be as accessible as possible, so she lowered them.

New to the clinic, Bradley also brought her training as a certified medical acupuncturist and, most significantly, opened her services to include exotic animals — not just dogs, cats and birds but reptiles, hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, ferrets, almost anything one could legally keep as a pet, except for animals with hooves.

For her patients, she will provide anything from wellness exams to dental cleaning to surgery and everything in between. She and her staff are not on call after hours, but anything they can’t do, they either refer to a specialist or bring a specialist to the clinic to accomplish.

Lindsey Weber, a vet tech at the facility for almost 10 years, said she was upset when she heard Mansfield was retiring, but intrigued when Bradley said she’d be taking appointments for exotics.

“It was a smooth transition,” Weber said. “She’s easy to work for. Very friendly.”

Asked to describe what distinguishes Bradley as a veterinarian, the receptionist Donna Rapolla chose the words compassionate, easygoing and thorough.

“She listens. She cares,” Rolla said.

Taking the big-picture view, once she’s past a few practical hurdles like computerizing the clinic’s records, Bradley said she would like to expand the business into a multi-doctor practice. After all, more doctors means more examined pets.

“There are emergency clinics … so if we need to refer to a specialist or anything like that, it’s right there,” she said.

“But for general practice, I think there’s a big need for that, because there are only two of those in Granite Bay.”

ess than a year after joining a long-established family dentistry practice in Granite Bay, Dr. Stephanie Sandretti, a San Francisco native who grew up in Danville, feels right at home. And in an industry known for causing discomfort, she’s found success by making sure her patients feel the same way.

Sandretti came to the area after finishing dental school at UCLA with her husband, Matt, who is now an orthodontist in Sacramento. She said Matt has family and friends in Granite Bay, so when it came time for the couple to settle down, the Sacramento area beckoned.

“My in-laws are from there, and my husband and I have been together for 10 years, so I know a lot of people in the area. I’m very familiar with the town and the schools,” she said. “A lot of the people that have lived there for many years are familiar with the Sandretti name, so it’s nice to have that.”

Sandretti joined Granite Bay Family Dentistry in June 2016 because friends had put her in touch with its owner, Dr. James Jack, and because she knew he and his staff were community mainstays. Dr. Jack has had a practice in Granite Bay for more than 35 years, and the reason Sandretti went into general practice in the first place, she said, was to cultivate longterm relationships with patients.

“As a general dentist, you hope to capture a patient for life. When they come in as a new patient, you hope you can provide them with a great experience, and they enjoy it, it’s comfortable, they feel educated and involved in the treatment-planning process,” she said. “One thing I did like about the Granite Bay area is that there is an aging population, and my residency was in medically compromised and geriatric dentistry, so I have a lot of experience in medically compromised patients — patients going through chemotherapy and various medical problems, I’ve dealt with them all.”

Now dealing with any patients who come through the door, ages 2 and up, Sandretti said the trick with anyone is making the experience as personalized and enjoyable as possible.

Making a trip to the dentist enjoyable can be a formidable task, especially for kids, but here a few ways she accomplishes it:

Stay open five days a week.

“That’s rare in dental offices. We do Friday appointments.”

Patients can pick the music.

“When we’re going to do a long procedure like a crown preparation or something, we can play whatever music they want from the computer.”

Technology, like a CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) machine, hastens procedures.

“Sometimes you have to wear a temporary (crown) for a couple weeks, and this way we can make a crown in the office and you’re done in one appointment.”

Kids get prizes.

“We have a treasure chest where kids can get prizes, if they’re good … They know they get to go to the treasure bin after, they always run to where it is, they know exactly what’s going on.”

Get the lead out — it’s a mostly metal-free practice.

“None of our crowns have metal. We don’t place silver fillings unless absolutely necessary. There are really good materials we can place that don’t have mercury effects and things like that, and a lot of people are trying to get away from having heavy metals in their bodies, so we make all of our fillings and crowns porcelain or a white-colored material.”

The staff all know the drill.

“Almost everybody other than myself has been there for a long time, so the patients will get to know the staff, will get to

know the doctors, they’ll stick with the same hygienist, things like that, so they’re feeling more comfortable every time they come. It’s familiar.”

“Show-Tell-Do” calms the kiddos.

“If I’m going to do an exam, I’ll show them the mirror and tell them, ‘This is my mirror, I’m going to look at your teeth,’ and I’ll let them hold it and play with it, see that it’s not scary, maybe I’ll put it in mom’s mouth to show them that it’s OK.” Give kids a grand tour on the first visit.

“A lot of times, rather than even doing a full exam and cleaning on a little kid, we’ll just show them around the office and have them do an introduction appointment. Then when they come back in six months, we’ll try to count their teeth and maybe we’ll brush them, so you kind of ease them into it. But that’s for really little kids.”

Elementary students honored at 20th annual Young Authors’ Showcase

Drive by the Granite Bay Library on almost any Monday and you’ll notice an empty parking lot. The library is closed on Mondays, and while you might see a few patrons in cars dropping off books in the outside book receptacle, that’s about it.

But on a Monday afternoon in April, the parking lot was overflowing with cars filled with families and their kindergarten through thirdgrade children who were being honored for their writing skills — enter the 20th annual Young Authors’ Showcase celebration, hosted by the Friends of the Granite Bay Library.

“The Showcase is an opportunity to honor those students who have gone above and beyond in their writing, both fiction and non-fiction, as well as highlighting those students whose achievements have surpassed previous performance,” said Rhonda Tory, Excelsior Elementary School library clerk and longtime Showcase coordinator.

Tory said classroom teachers at Greenhills and Oakhills elementary schools select the writings of students who show exemplary work, imagination, creativity or individual growth. This year, the library was packed with students anxious to show off their work to their families and school staff.

Six-year-old Greenhills student Kira Winter, who authored “My Magic Kite,” had her whole family on hand to read her story about a magic kite that had adventures in China.

“My story is three pages,” she said as she showed off a photo of herself dressed in a glitter T-shirt.

When asked about her favorite subject in school, Kira said it was story time.

“When my teacher tells us it’s story time, my brain says, ‘It’s time to listen,’” she said.

“We are all proud of Kira,” said Aaron Winter, Kira’s dad.

Tailer Holloway, a second-grader in Nicole Thompson’s class at Greenhills, wrote a story about a magic sock entitled, “Super Sock.”

“It’s about a magic sock that gives out candy,” Tailer said. “I got my idea from Dr. Seuss.”

On hand to help celebrate with her students, Thompson said the Young Authors’ Showcase celebration is the perfect way to bring confidence to young students and to recognize them for their work.

“My own daughter was a part of this event when she was a student at Oakhills, and I know how it important it was to her,”

Third-grade Oakhills teacher Gina McArdle was also on hand to support the two students she selected to be part of the day’s celebration, Blake Brown and Jack Harrison.

“The Young Authors’ Showcase is a wonderful opportunity to inspire students to write their best for the world to see,” McArdle said. “The stories I selected are vivid and entertaining and were written with clear thinking and satisfying conclusions.”

In addition to the children’s work on display, Granite Bay resident and puppeteer Jan Sanders entertained the crowd with her Fluffers & Friends puppet show. Sanders has been part of the Showcase program since its inception. Her theme for this year was, “I Can Do It.” The Young Authors’ Showcase was the brainchild of Granite Bay residents and educators Carolsue Acres, Carol Brown and Ann Mallo. In addition, Carol Lawson, Linda Smith and Rhonda Tory have helped to coordinate the event each year.

Lawson said she has been pleased to see how excited and proud the students get when they are showcased for their writing.

“I have had the privilege of keeping in touch with one of my students who was showcased when she was in third grade,” Lawson said. “She is now graduating from college and is an excellent writer. Her mother told me that the Showcase gave her that boost to continue to write creatively.”

Lawson and Smith have been on the Young Authors’ Showcase committee since 1999. Together each year they pick a theme and coordinate simple decorations to support the invitations that the teachers send home.

“We try to do something new each year,” Smith said. “We’re both retired teachers, and because of our background we’ve enjoyed being involved in an event that recognizes the good works of students K-3 from Oakhills and Greenhills schools.”

Laura Tyrrell, 64, died April 18 in Granite Bay

B

y early April, nearly a decade of chemotherapy had begun to take its toll on Laura Tyrrell.

Tyrrell, who had been diagnosed with terminal peritoneal cancer in 2007, would return exhausted to her Granite Bay home some days in the last year of her life, falling asleep in her chair. But on April 4, she spent a day at the State Capitol, meeting with lawmakers and receiving the Capitol Dome Award from the American Cancer Society.

“It was a long day for her, but she still mustered the courage and the energy to do it,” said Steve Tyrrell, her husband of 42 years.

Tyrrell, who died April 18 of cancer-related cardiac arrest at age 64, never stopped mustering courage or working to make her diagnosis more than a death sentence — or acting selflessly in this work.

“It was always, ‘I’m going to use this as a platform to help find a cure for cancer.

I’m going to use this to encourage people who are going through the same journey that I’m going through,’” said Greg Fairrington, senior pastor at Tyrrell’s church of more than 20 years, Destiny Christian Church in Rocklin.

being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000 and later also being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

In March 2014, Tyrrell attended a fundraiser put on by the commercial real estate community for the Placer Breast Cancer Endowment, which was approximately $400,000 shy of a $1.5 million goal to endow a breast cancer chair at UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Steve Tyrrell, a partner for a Sacramento-based commercial real estate firm, said his wife worked that night to raise the remaining $400,000. She worked with Beth Ruyak of Capitol Public Radio and Carol Garcia, a member of Roseville City Council at the time who helped found the endowment in 2005 and is a breast cancer survivor herself.

“I just can’t say enough good things about (Laura) and how she set the tone for all of us,” said Garcia, who noted that the chair was endowed in 2015 and that research has begun.

Asked his wife’s secret to fundraising, Steve Tyrrell said, “It was just her story.

She shared it openly about her journey through three cancers.”

She could bring a room down even when she walked into it with some nervousness. One Wednesday night, Tyrrell spoke at a 300-member men’s group at Destiny Christian Church.

“There was not a dry eye of 300 guys after Laura told her story,” Fairrington said.

Fairrington called Tyrrell “probably the strongest woman I’ve ever met.” That strength manifested itself in different ways.

tember 2015, his group had finally landed a meeting in Washington D.C. with Rep. Tom McClintock, after years of unsuccessfully trying. Tyrrell, who became a legislative ambassador for the network around 2010, wasn’t about to miss the meeting to lobby McClintock for more cancer research funding. Fellow ACSCAN member Christy Patton remembered Tyrrell as a tenacious negotiator in similar meetings.

“She won’t leave until she gets what she wants,” Patton said.

The night before the meeting with McClintock, Tyrrell became ill and had to be hospitalized. She got a cab the next day from the hospital and made the meeting.

“Nothing was going to keep her from making her case directly to McClintock,” Knox told The Bee. One of Tyrrell’s neighbors and close friends in Granite Bay, Roseville Automall owner John L. Sullivan — himself in remission for lymphoma for approximately 25 years — never worried about Tyrrell’s seemingly-tireless cancer work amidst her treatment.

“She was doing exactly what she wanted to do, which was fight this disease,” Sullivan said.

Asked what he’ll miss most about his wife, Steve Tyrrell said, “It’s almost impossible to begin. My best friend, we can talk about anything.”

He continued, “You know, you live life with somebody like Laura, you realize (you were) lucky. She was a one-of-a-kind, everything about her — her personality, her grace, her dignity, her beauty, her love of life, love of friends, love of family, love of faith. I mean, I could go on and on.”

Tyrrell is survived by her husband, sons Jeff and James Tyrrell, daughter Katie Tyrrell Malone and two granddaughters, Addison and Serafina.

The Bee noted that instead of flowers, contributions could be made to the American Cancer Society’s local chapter, located at 1545 River Park Drive, Suite 100, Sacramento, CA, 95815.

Asked if her work will live on, Steve Tyrrell said, “We’re going to make sure it does.

Her kids and I are committed to keeping her legacy alive, however we can.”

“The bone cells really like the surface of titanium,” Binon said. “It’’s like a post in concrete, it doesn’t move.” From this anchor point, a single prosthetic tooth can be attached which eliminates cutting into good teeth to adhere a dental piece. “The days of having to depend on denture adhesive to keep dentures in place or shaving a healthy tooth down to place a bridge are long gone,” Binon said.

And, the options for solving dental problems doesn’t stop there, the barriers

are few when using an implant.

“The limitations are the experience and education of the clinician along with his vision and imagination. There’s such a wide variety of applications — it’s wonderful.”

LONGEVITY

The level of successful integration is about 95 to 97 percent and if properly planned, and maintained can last a lifetime, Binon said.

“I’ve got cases going back 25 to 30 years, healthy, functional and still intact,” he said.

Homes for the rich (and famous) in Los Lagos

M

ost days, unless the gardeners are working, the white gates near the back of Granite Bay’s Los Lagos neighborhood remain closed.

Beyond them lies the 11,158-squarefoot former home of actor Eddie Murphy — infinity pool, tennis court, 14 bathrooms, nine-car garage and all. Other stars like Sacramento Kings players Bobby Johnson and Chris Webber, Olympic swimmer Summer Sanders and New York Yankees player Steve Sax have called the neighborhood home since its conception in the 1980s, according to the website of local Realtor Zac Bacon.

Most of the homes in Los Lagos aren’t as extravagant as the one Murphy owned, but then, maybe that’s in the eye of the beholder. Many have the stereotypical idioms of wealth: manicured hedges, delicate topiaries, white statues and fountains. One resident hired painters from Russia to decorate the interior domes of his home’s rotundas like those of Russian Orthodox churches.

The home next door to Murphy’s former residence has a two-story guest house and its own helipad.

Betty Trembly, a retired psychologist who’s lived in Los Lagos for 14 years with her husband Lynn, points these features out as she drives around the neighborhood. She doesn’t know of any celebrities

living in Los Lagos at this time, except for a rapper whose name she can’t recall. It’s just as well, she says, he probably wouldn’t want to be named anyway.

Some of the homes display “a distressing use of money,” as she puts it, pointing out the houses she knows have single dwellers. According to information from the 2010 census, an average of two and a half people live in each home. But in some ways, Los Lagos pushes back against the stereotype of cold, unfriendly residents living alone in mansions.

The community is gated and guarded 24/7 but opens its arms to the surrounding area in different ways, hosting fundraising events for nonprofits like last

month’s garden tour benefitting Seniors First. At Christmastime, local residents are welcome to tour some of the homes decorated for the holidays. The money raised goes to the Make-a-Wish Foundation and other charities.

Los Lagos also encourages socialization within the neighborhood. Several committees make sure every aspect of living there runs smoothly, from the architec-

ture and landscaping to art displays and social events. Not everyone participates, of course, but Trembly says neighbors can be as involved as they wish.

“On an extroverted day, you sit on your front porch. On an introverted day, you sit on the back porch,” she says. “That’s how the whole neighborhood is, that kind of choice. Mix if you want, don’t if you don’t.”

She says the population is also more di-

verse than many perceive it to be. Though the racial makeup of Los Lagos is more or less homogenous — roughly 85 percent of is white, according to 2010 census data — the ages and careers of its residents span a wider range.

“I think we’re under the perception that it’s all retired people, like me,” she laughs.

“But there are lots of families.”

Of the neighbors Trembly knows, some

have jobs one might expect from a part of the state where the average annual income is six figures: doctors, lawyers, retired professional athletes and the vice president of Hewlett-Packard. But Los Lagos is also home to college professors, nurses, teachers, a bishop and a bead shop owner.

One home may have Tuscan-style arches and courtyards, while the neighbor’s house could have the sweeping, dramatic angles of a more contemporary home, while another might be a quaint, brick English cottage. Colors and styles are subject to committee approval but the careful landscaping of most homes, combined with large lot sizes, keep things from looking cluttered.

“You’ll notice it’s not cookie-cutter,” says Trembly, whose own home has a pool, a walled courtyard and a back porch enclosed by arches. Her house, built around 1991, is “one of the smaller ones,” clocking in at just over 4,000 square feet.

It’s also being cleared out and put on the market, with painters touching up the walls as she speaks. After 14 years in Los Lagos, she and Lynn have decided to sell their place. An avid member of the community’s landscape committee, she has enjoyed being here but says it’s time to move closer to family.

Continuing to drive around Los Lagos’ winding streets, she speaks of the changes she’s seen over the years, most notably how her community bounced back from the recession.

“The recession hit Los Lagos like everywhere else,” she says. “The neighborhood kind of shut down.”

Now that former residents have been able to sell their homes, a new influx of families has moved in, bringing with them their own goals and dreams for Los Lagos. For instance, two men who purchased homes in recent years have started a well-received music club, where residents can come together regularly and perform for their neighbors. Other neighbors are working on fixing up their new homes, which Trembly calls “unfinished stories.”

The potential for dozens more dreams, goals and aspirations is wide open; as of mid-May, 24 houses are on the market.

Maybe one of these days, someone will move into Eddie Murphy’s former estate.

It’s up for sale, Trembly says, and only $12 million.

Silent community warrior makes big noise helping athletes and veterans HO M ETOWN HER OES |

I

t is an honor to write a column each month about a local hometown hero, warrior, philanthropist or just all-around great person who does special and great things for our community. There are so many awesome people that live silently around us, in our neighborhoods, that this monthly column will introduce them to you so you can have the opportunity to meet them and learn who these people are. We will call these people Hometown Heroes!

The first person that brings me great pleasure to introduce to you is Granite Bay resident Rick Sutter, who makes a living as an important Granite Bay High School football and lacrosse videographer coach. He is also the director of operations for a national nonprofit that educates students, coaches and community about the needs of military veterans, a group called The Honor Group, which is based out of Rocklin.

Rick Sutter has been an entrepreneur for most of his working career and is a graduate of UC Berkeley. While attending UC Berkeley, he worked in the multimedia department for the school of optometry and was the head photographer there.

After graduating, he founded Frame By Frame Digital, a business-to-business visual communication company whose client list included Sega of America, Sony Computer Entertainment, Electronic Arts, Hewlett Packard and many others.

After Rick relocated with his family to Granite Bay in 1998, he became impassioned with sports video and began assisting hundreds of high school, college and pro athletes by putting together highlight reels for them — a crucial service for athletes trying to move to the next level. Rick has been the videographer of Granite Bay High School’s football program for more than 10 years, and recently took on the same role for the school’s lacrosse team.

A few years ago, Rick was introduced to a football coach who embraced his video and photography talents and asked him to help grow a fledgling football event in need of support — the Battle at the Capital High School Football Showcase. Together they took over operations, and since then the showcase has changed its name to the Honor Bowl High School Football Showcase, which brings together the best of the best high school football teams to compete and help raise money for military veterans.

The Honor Bowl is recognized by CBS MaxPreps as one of the best high school football showcases in the nation.

In 2011, Rick was the main cinematographer, executive producer and editor of a compelling documentary entitled “The Day Remembered.” It’s an in-your-face documentary that tells the stories of wounded Marines injured in Afghanistan, and how those Marines and family members handled injury, recovery and life.

Over the years Rick’s passion grew for the service of the military, active-serving and veterans, and in 2013 he co-founded what has become a nationally respected nonprofit called The Honor Group, Inc. The nonprofit’s mission is to educate students, coaches and community members about the needs of our military veterans. For the past four years, Rick has volunteered his skills and become the director of operations of this rapidly growing military support nonprofit.

This month we honor Mr. Rick Sutter. We honor him for his commitment to community, student athletes and our military veterans. Thank you, Rick, for helping to ensure America’s veterans are taken care of and for educating the students and coaches of America about what a hero looks like. A family approach to caregiving SEN IOR VIEW |

W

e have explored professionals on a seniors’ care team, and now it’s time to look at the most important team members of all: family!

Sometimes the senior needing assistance has an able-bodied spouse to provide care, and other times adult children have stepped in to help. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful seniors and families as I’ve arranged for in-home care with BrightStar that I’d like to highlight a few of the families I’ve seen successfully manage the care for a parent or parents with creativity, dignity and love.

Meet the Martinez family. Mr. and Mrs. Martinez had been married 48 years and raised five children when Mr. Martinez passed away. Mrs. Martinez managed well living at home, but by the time she turned 90, the children started to worry about her. She became very quiet and forgetful. There began a series of events (such as burning food, even leaving the stove burner on) that raised concerns for the family. The event that triggered changes was when one of the adult kids came over and found the car running in the driveway and mom completely unaware of it.

After much discussion among the five children and spouses, Rubie (the only daughter) and her husband, Mike, graciously volunteered to move into mom’s home to provide companionship and care for her so she could stay at home. For the first seven years, Rubie and Mike provided almost exclusive care and companionship for Mrs. Martinez. However, in approximately the last two years, the other adult children and spouses and family members became increasingly involved in the care of their mother. It has been nine years now, and these are qualities that I believe have helped in the success of the care.

Team Approach: Although Rubie is the primary caregiver, the entire family takes a role in their mother’s care. As the medical issues progressed over the years, the family gradually developed different ways to share care duties. After many variations of care plans, the family settled on the following: Every weekend, one of the brothers stays at the house, Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon, taking on the role of primary caregiver so Rubie and her husband can be “off duty.” Mike and Rubie may not do anything special, but they find rest in not having the responsibility of care. They have an entire year mapped out for the rotation, noting holidays and birthdays so they can plan or trade as needed.

One of the sons lives in San Diego. From afar, he has found different ways to contribute to the well-being of their mother.

For example, every day for the past five or six years, he has called their mother on the phone at around 6:30 a.m. — a source of great anticipation for her. Further, he comes up to Northern Cal-

ifornia two to four times a year for a week or so to participate in tending to their mother’s needs.

At times, the extended family (including the adult children, their spouses, the grandchildren and even the great grandchildren) steps in to make sure that mother’s needs are taken care of, either at her home or the home of the extended family. Examples of this would be if their mother has medical appointments, or if Rubie and/or Mike are unable to care for their mother due to their own health needs or for a much-needed vacation. This allows Rubie and/or Mike to recover and get a break from their caregiver role.

Routine: Keeping to a regular daily routine for care and medications is key. They have a medication chart that caregiver-on-duty follows, and documents to assure compliance with the medication regimen.

Technology: In order to enjoy life at home yet keep an eye on mom’s care needs, cameras were placed in strategic areas of the house that can be viewed on cell phones. For example, family can see from the kitchen if mom needs help in another room, yet this allows mom not to feel hovered over. Whichever family member is “on duty” uses the phone app, or siblings thinking about mom from afar can check in for peace of mind.

Communication: One son in particular has the gift of communication and clearly details care concerns in group emails, texts or phone calls. All of the family members “on duty” communicate with each other to assure coverage for their mother’s needs. Without this collaboration, the family would not have the quality of care that they wish to provide for their mother.

What resonates with me more than anything is the love and respect they show their mother and one another. They have a beautiful way of expressing gratitude to Rubie for all she does, and they continually shower their mother with love. When I noted this, they simply said “it is a reflection of who our mother is and how she raised us.”

THE SCIENCE OF AFTERBURN There is a scientific term for afterburn: excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPEOC). This refers to the oxygen that your body needs to restore after a heart-pounding workout.

So afterburn is indeed real.

While you exercise, your body needs fuel to keep your muscles firing, and this requires oxygen to transport the fuel into the muscles. This causes your metabolism to rev up to an elevated state during and after exercise.

INTENSE EXERCISE = INTENSE AFTERBURN Studies show a direct correlation between the intensity of your workout and the amount of calories burned during the afterburn period.

In order to get the most afterburn bang for your buck, you must push yourself to 70-85 percent of your max heart rate during your workout. The more intense your workout, the more bonus calories you will burn in the hours afterward.

Intense and vigorous exercise keeps your body burning calories hours after the workout is through. And this is not the only benefit to HIIT workouts — there’s also the bonus of increased muscle tone, fat loss and an increase in your aerobic capacity.

Keep this in mind the next time you push yourself through a workout. Remember that intensity pays off, and an HIIT workout has more proven benefits than a steady-state cardio workout.

Do you want more afterburn?

Then use all of your muscles.

To amp up your afterburn, avoid single-joint movements that isolate body parts and instead focus on compound, full-body movements. Exercises like squats, lunges and deadlifts work multiple joints and muscles and increase the intensity of your workout, and likewise the intensity of your afterburn effect and the number of calories you burn.

If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, talk to your

doctor before starting interval training or any other new exercise program, especially if you’ve been relatively inactive.

You can reduce the risk of straining a muscle or joint by starting with a gentle warm-up before your workout to loosen your joints and get the blood flowing. Be prepared to “feel the burn” after your challenging HIIT workout. It’s normal to feel sore for a day or two as your muscles recover. A day off between workouts is a good general practice when engaging in this type of exercise.

iving in Amador County, a stone’s throw from some exceptional wineries, we enjoy the great quality of wines produced there. One of our favorites, and a brand we sell a lot of in our store, is Jeff Runquist Wines.

Jeff has a long history in the wine industry starting in 1977, when he interned with Seagrams at their Paul Masson Sherry Cellars in Madera while studying enology at UC Davis. Upon graduating in 1980, he worked in the cellar at Montevina in Amador County’s Shenandoah Valley and was promoted to winemaker in 1982. After a three-year stint at the Napa Valley Cooperative Winery from 1987 through 1990, Jeff became the winemaker for the J. Lohr winery.

Jeff’s first vintage under his own label debuted in 1997, when he released 700 cases of Zinfandel. In 2006 Jeff purchased a small five-acre walnut orchard on Shenandoah Road. In the spring of 2008, Jeff and Margie opened their tasting room. Production facilities followed, and Jeff was able to crush the majority of their production in Amador in 2011.

Jeff travels throughout California to find just the right grapes for his vineyard-designated wines. The winery produces 22 different red varietals from nine appellations.

He produces balanced wines that can be enjoyed in their youth, but will also age and become more complex with time.

Besides the numerous awards Jeff receives each year for his exceptional wines, in 2009 he was named Winemaker of the Year by the San Francisco International Wine Competition.

Beef, a summertime backyard classic IN TH E KITC HEN |

e are seasonal beings and creatures of change. Everyone enjoys a switch in gears, a turn in the weather, and a variation in the foods we consume. As the weather begins to stay consistently warm, I always tend to reach for the classic backyard foods: burgers, tacos, kabobs, etc. This month’s column explores the various ways beef can be prepared. It is important to highlight the different forms beef can assume and understand the difference between a mediocre meat product and the best quality for your meal.

This is not a burger that should be taken lightly or eaten without a napkin at the ready. It is a leaning tower of green veggies, tangy sauce, hearty patties, and the most beloved ingredient, bacon. There wasn’t a lot of talking going on around my dinner table because every bite is a mouthful. The garlic aioli is the star of the show. The flavor of the garlic is almost overwhelming, but is tamed by the tart lemon for the perfect marriage of flavor. Pair with rainbow carrot fries and you have a meal that will literally leave you speechless.

MEAN GREEN BACON BURGER Serves 2 Burger Ingredients • 1 pound ground grass-fed beef • 1 tbsp onion powder • 1 tbsp garlic powder • Pink Himalayan salt and pepper to taste • ¼ yellow onion • 2 large kale leaves • ½ of a cucumber* use a mandoline to slice • 4 strips of bacon • 1 avocado • 2 hamburger buns (I prefer gluten free) Rainbow Carrot Fries Ingredients • 5-6 organic whole rainbow carrots • 1 tbsp olive oil • Pink Himalayan salt and pepper to taste • Garlic Lemon Aioli • 2 tbsp minced garlic • 4 tbsp vegan mayonnaise (regular mayo is fine) • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice • Pink Himalayan salt and pepper to taste Burger Directions 1. Place ground beef, onion and garlic powder in a bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste and mix well. Set aside.

2. Slice yellow onion, kale, cucumber, and avocado and set aside.

3. Place 4 strips of bacon on a griddle and cook to desired texture.

4. Once done, place bacon on a paper towel to drain excess fat.

Set aside. Do not remove bacon grease from griddle.

5. Form patties the size of your palm from the ground beef and place on the griddle with the bacon fat.

6. Toast buns in oven at 425 degrees for 6 minutes. Check consistently to avoid burning. Great to throw in with the rainbow fries.

Rainbow Carrot Fries Directions 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

2. Use a mandoline to slice carrots into thin and wide pieces.

3. Arrange fries on a baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil.

4. Salt and pepper to taste.

5. Garlic Lemon Aioli 6. In a separate bowl mix vegan mayo, minced garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper.

7. Mix well and spread on buns after toasting.
