With 24 years of service in the industry behind them, owner Dean Carter said that his company’s commitment to quality and excellent customer service is what helps them excel – something reflected in the award. “I think it’s fantastic,” Carter said. “I think it just shows that we’re doing what we should do. Thai Paradise took top honors for another year in a row for best Thai restaurant in Folsom during the Telegraph’s 2017 Best of the Best contest. Opened in May 2008, owners Alex and Jarunee Fleming started their dream. “My wife is an award-winning Thai chef and she always wanted to have her own restaurant,” Alex Fleming said. After a year of searching for the perfect location, they stumbled upon their current place at 2770 E Bidwell St. #100 in Folsom. “Our recipes are straight from the Royal Thai Palace, with daily lunch and dinner specials,” Alex said. “We offer authentic curries, rice dishes, noodle soups and noodle stir fry bowls. Catering is our specialty, and we are constantly updating our menu to feature fresh, new and delicious Thai dishes.” Alex said what sets his restaurant apart is ‘simply the best food.’ “Everyone here is friendly,” he said. “I want custom-
ers to come in and be comfortable. We invite everyone to experience a little bit of Thailand and to really have an enjoyable experience.” The local business has been voted the best Thai restaurant every year since they opened. “We are glad to have the award,” Fleming said. “Making my customers happy is the best thing about this job. Telegraph readers voted Sutter Club as best local dive bar in Folsom in the 2017 Best of the Best contest and I do not disagree. I am a regular at Sutter Club and I love it! In the last year, they have updated their tap beer selection to craft beer and I never have a problem choosing a good one. Sutter Club is a great place to start a night out with friends because it is iconic in Folsom. Everyone knows about it and knows where it is. Prices are good and so are the drinks. It is just a fun place to hangout. Sutter Club is also a great place to end that night out because they are one of the only places in Folsom that are open the latest. One of my favorite qualities of Sutter Club is the pool table. Not many places in Folsom have a pool table and on Wednesdays, it is free! Periodically, I will go with my boyfriend and we will play game after game for hours. 12

Shapemasters, one of the newest businesses opened this year, has had nothing but success. It shows as they were voted best weight loss business in Folsom in the Telegraph’s 2017 Best of the Best contest. Founder Vince Rose said that once he realized he discovered something revolutionary, he knew he had to share. “This technology was not only going to address weight issues, but save many lives in the process,” he said. “I felt I would be doing the world a disservice by not taking this technology public.” Years ago, Rose developed a technology that successfully eliminated the communication between cells and organisms on the cellular level. “I was able to deactivate deadly pathogenic microorganisms,” he said. “It uses light and sounds to disrupt cellular communication between living organisms. When organisms can’t talk, they die because they cannot multiply or replicate.” This technology has been used in military applications by the U.S. Government in germ warfare control wherever

The recently opened Julian’s Patisserie and Café is starting out strong in the Folsom community taking home the top award for best gourmet/specialty shop in Folsom in the Telegraph’s 2017 Best of the Best contest. The local business opened only in December last year and has been the talk of the town since. “We have always wanted to create our own shop and be able to move back to Folsom with our family,” Owner Julian Perrigo-Jimenez said about him and his wife Ashley. “However, finding work for a pastry chef in the area is tough. We decided the only way to make it work and be home again was to do it ourselves. We sold our home and belongings to make this dream a reality.” Perrigo-Jimenez said he personally chose the food industry because pastries and food have been a passion of his since he was a young child. “Nothing seems to bring people together and create joy as much as food does. As a pastry chef, I have been able to be a part of so many special occasions, and to see

nothing but smiles makes this experience worth it,” he said. “I love cooking and I love the creativity that comes with food.”
When creating his masterpieces, Perrigo-Jimenez uses the highest quality of ingredients and everything is handmade, he said. “For our breakfast pastries, we use a special French butter that gives our croissants that rich butter flavor found in France!” he said. “I laminate and shape all breakfast pastries in house. They are fresh every morning and I think our customers really appreciate and acknowledge the quality of our product.” Perrigo-Jimenez said he is honored to have won this award from the community. “This has been such an amazing ride over the last five months, and to see the community give such great feedback really feels like a dream come true! We want to be here forever and raise our children in this community,” he said. “Thank you for this opportunity!”

In Folsom, the local business took home the award for best heating and air. Darrin Gilmore, general manager of the company, said what sets his business apart from others in the industry is their focus on their customers. “My dad is very adamant about taking care of the clients,” he said. “You have to put yourself in the customers’ shoes. First and foremost, you take care of them and they will bless you with more customers and more referrals.” Gilmore said at the end of the day, the clients’ needs come first. “Our customer service is excellent. We’ve been extremely successful because of it,” he said. Amador County was voted by Telegraph readers as best day trip for people in Folsom in the 2017 Best of the Best contest. When I think of Amador, I think of wine. Wine is my best friend. Now that we have gotten that out of the way, let’s talk about location. Amador County is about a 45 minute drive from the Folsom area which makes wine tasting that much better. Who wants to travel two hours to Napa for wine? Not me! Location is only one of many reasons Amador is a great day trip. Another reason is the quality and amount of wine that is up there. There is an amazing winery on pretty much every corner and piece of land up there. They greatest thing about these wineries is you will get the chance to meet the winemaker and owners, and they are always happy to talk about their wine-making process. In the past year-and-a-half, I have come to love Amador wines and the little shops that are nestled around. I must include that the Amador Vintage Market has some of the best sun-dried tomato tortilla chips I have ever tasted in my life. This is my personal opinion and when anyone tries them, they will know I am not wrong! All in all, Amador is one of my favorite places in the foothill region, and I am not surprised that hundreds of Telegraph readers believe so as well.

WINNER BEST: HOME-GROWN ATHLETE
BROWNING, ANDERSON VOTED TOP HOME-GROWN ATHLETES BY MATT LONG
Winners of the best home-grown athlete of the Telegraph’s 2017 Best of the Best contest went to a current professional athlete and one that is on the path to be one some day. Ryan Anderson helped lead Oak Ridge High School to a state basketball championship in 2005 and after graduating in 2006, Anderson received a scholarship to play basketball at Cal. After two years there, Anderson declared himself eligible for the NBA draft and was drafted by the New Jersey Nets with the 21st pick of the first round in 2008. Anderson has since played three years with the Orlando Magic, four years with the New Orleans Pelicans and just finished his first season with the Houston Rockets. In nine years in the NBA, the 6-10 forward has averaged 13 points and five rebounds per game. Anderson’s counterpart in Folsom was Jake Browning, who is a 2015 graduate of Folsom High School. Browning was a record-breaking quarterback at FHS,
where he led the Bulldogs to a state championship his senior year in 2014, completing 360-of-524 passes for 5,796 yards, 91 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His career numbers in 46 games over three seasons are 1,191 completions in 1,708 attempts for 16,781 yards, 229 TDs and 40 interceptions. As a team, Browning led the Bulldogs to a 44-2 record in those three seasons, losing only twice to national power De La Salle in the Northern California title game. Since then, Browning has continued his success at the University of Washington. As a freshman in 2015, Browning earned the starting job and completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,955 yards and 16 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, while leading Washington to a 7-5 record. This past season as a sophomore, Browning completed 62 percent of his passes for 3,430 yards and 43 touchdowns against only nine interceptions. The Huskies went 12-2 on the season and reached the NCAA title game where they lost 24-7 to Alabama. Browning finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

BULLDOGS, RICHARDSON WIN BEST SPORTS TEAM, COACH IN FOLSOM BY MATT LONG
Folsom’s Best of the Best sports team and coach come from the same program. Folsom High’s football team won the Best of the Best sports team, while the team’s coach, Kris Richardson, was voted Best of the Best coach. “It’s pretty awesome to get that recognition,” the 48-year-old Richardson said. “I’ve been coaching 22 years and sometimes coaches can wear out their welcome, but I still have a great relationship with the kids and the parents. I’m humbled and proud to be a part of this program. It’s not all about me either. I’ve got 20 coaches in the program.” The Bulldogs have been one of the top programs in the Sacramento area for the last nine years, compiling a win-loss record over that time of 115-13. Folsom has won five section titles from 2010-2016 and the two years it didn’t win it still reached the championship game. The Bulldogs also won state titles in 2010 and 2014. Over the last five seasons, Folsom has more wins (56) than any Division I program in the state. St. John Bosco has 54 wins, while De La Salle has 52 wins. “I’m extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished,” said Richardson, who’s taught at Folsom High since 1996. “You think of all the other high schools in the state, so to have the most wins and be in the elite company of St. John Bosco and De La Salle is impressive.” To Richardson, who’s been the head varsity coach since 2005, the key to success has been hard work by both he and his staff and of course the players. “For me, I just show up and work every day,” Richardson said. “I want to be better today than I was yesterday. For the kids, it’s a grind in January and February when we get on them, but the kids have bought in and that’s been the key to our success.”

Wal-Mart was voted best place to people watch in Folsom by Telegraph readers in the 2017 Best of the Best contest. It is no surprise Wal-Mart took first place as it all originates with the website, PeopleOfWalmart.com. While in Folsom, there aren’t too many interesting folks wandering around, but occasionally, you get lucky and get to have a good laugh. Personally, I love Wal-Mart because who doesn’t love cheap stuff ? At this point in my life, Wal-Mart is great for snacks and nail polish. At the Folsom location, there is a Subway inside and, I have to say, they make some good sandwiches – if that is what I am in the mood for that day. The one thing about the Folsom Wal-Mart is there are little to no people dressed obnoxiously or have no teeth. Maybe the reason I haven’t noticed is because I am one of them. Hm.

As a solo performer, Renee has performed the National Anthem at many high profile events including a nationally televised NASCAR race. Guitarists that make up the “company” for performances have included Skip Mullin, Kenneth True and Ed Wilson. Cynthia Renee is also an Estate Planning Attorney and the owner of Cinder Law, she was voted number one local attorney in both Folsom and El Dorado Hills Best of the Best this year. Cynthia Renee and Company has performed at numerous venues locally including UnWined on Sutter Street, Crystal Basin Cellars, McConnell Estates Winery, Scoreboards, Gold Hill Vineyards, Sammy’s Casino, Tio Pepe’s and more. Cynthia Renee and Company will be performing at the upcoming Telegraph Best of the Best Awards party on June 8 taking place at FLB Entertainment Center. The event is free to the public.
