Homemade solutions for pest problems
(Family Features) The battle between humans and pests has raged on for thousands of years, including cave dwellers who may have used camphor leaves as mosquito repellent 77,000 years ago, according to researchers at South Africa’s University of the Witwatersrand. The struggle isn’t too different today, as homeowners try home remedies with varying levels of success. Ron Harrison, Ph.D., Orkin entomologist, shares these tips for effective home treatments. Fire Ants Fire ants have painful stingers, so it’s no wonder people try to discourage them with cornmeal, grits, boric acid, garlic cloves or cayenne pepper. Unfortunately, Harrison said these remedies rarely work because they seldom eliminate the colony. A pest control professional targets the entire colony, specifically the queens. Things you can do at home include: • Take away attractive food and water sources. Clean up outdoor spills, open food containers, and pet food and water bowls. • Make fire ants uncomfortable because they seldom return to the same spot — mowing over a colony can help. Flies Science backs up public perception of flies being dirty: they carry twice as many pathogens as cockroaches, breed rapidly, and contaminate the surfaces and food they land on. Home remedies like suspending a clear bag of water outside don’t usually deter them. To cut down on flies, Harrison recommends: • Regularly wiping countertops and cleaning food and drink spills. • Emptying trash cans frequently. • Installing screens on doors and windows. • Turning on fans. Mosquitoes Mosquitoes are the uninvited guests of summer barbecues. Harrison said the insects are attracted to perspiration, some perfumes and colognes, but are repelled by other scents such as citronella. For citronella to be effective, Harrison said the amount of scent you would need would be almost overwhelming. To effectively deter these biting bugs from your yard: • Remove standing water from gutters, buckets and other areas where mosquitoes can breed. • Change water in bird baths, fountains and potted plants frequently. • Thin out vegetation where adult mosquitoes may live and feed. Wasps Most people have developed a well-earned fear of wasps, which can sting repeatedly and are poisonous to some. Harrison said that while wasps may not like the scent of hanging rose-

mary bunches, unless you kill the queen, she’ll continue to reproduce and you won’t achieve much of an impact. A better way to cut down on wasp encounters is to get rid of the proteins and sweets they like to feed on, so Harrison advises to: • Keep your yard clean of ripe or rotting fruit. • Clean up after barbecues to remove leftover meat. • Dispose of sugary drinks before they can attract wasps. • Install a misting system. Roaches The sight of a roach scurrying across the kitchen floor is enough to send most people reaching for a shoe or jumping on a chair. Some people believe putting out cucumber slices will repel roaches, while others try catnip or ammonia. Harrison said these remedies are a long shot. Ammonia applied directly to a cockroach could kill it, but spraying baseboards with the household cleaner won’t do much because it’s a volatile compound that dissipates. Instead try: • Keeping your home clean and free of moisture and food spills. • Sealing all cracks and crevices inside the home, as adult cockroaches can squeeze through a space as thin as a dime. • Lowering the thermostat to discourage German cockroaches, which like hot and humid conditions.

Airbnb drives dollars
to Big Bear By Janet Dooley Visitors to Big Bear Valley have many options on where to stay — hotels, cabins, campgrounds, second homes and rented rooms. Airbnb is one way to find those options. More than 112,000 guests booked a stay in Big Bear Valley through Airbnb this last ski season, according to the latest statistics from the company. Airbnb is an online community marketplace that connects people looking to rent their homes with people who are looking for accommodations. In a press release, Airbnb provided rental data for November 15, 2016, through April 15, 2017. The report gave figures for Big Bear City, Big Bear Lake, and Mammoth Lakes. With a total of more than 150,000 guests for the three locations, the Airbnb data showed a season-over-season growth of 92 percent (2016-17 compared to 2015-16). The outlook is good for individuals to purchase rental property, said Tom Benson, associate broker at Wheeler Steffen Sotheby’s International Realty in the Village. Interest rates and points are low. Optimism is up on the economy. “Big Bear is getting good traffic into vacation homes,” Benson said. “It’s going to generate income with rents, whether with Airbnb or VRBO or whatever.” The average price for a booked rental listing during ski season ranged from $315 per night in Big Bear City

to $420 per night in Big Bear Lake. Multi-bedroom listings (homes) at 89 percent far outdistanced one-room listings. The average number per trip was five guests, staying 2.5 nights in the three locations. Thirty percent of guest stays were on weekdays, 70 percent on weekends, according to the Airbnb report. “Airbnb is the flavor of the year,” Cargill said. “There are hundreds of sites to be on, like VRBO and FlipKey. It’s just a marketing arm, a place to put your ad.” Cargill said Airbnb doesn’t drive the market in Big Bear, but it does have national exposure. “Do you see any ads on Airbnb about Big Bear? No,” Cargill said. Kim Hermon, sales and marketing manager at Big Bear Vacations, echoed Cargill’s statements. “Absolutely we list on channel partners, and Airbnb is one of them,” Hermon said. Big Bear Vacations manages more than 350 rental properties in Big Bear Valley and every one of them is listed on Airbnb. The company uses a rental software program that shows what property was rented through Airbnb and other sources, Hermon said. She said the report information seemed right to her as it pertained to the number of guests and length of stay. The report went on to state 90 percent of Airbnb guests during ski season came from Southern California. The top guest origin cities for Big Bear City and Big Bear Lake were Los Angeles, with 27 percentage of guests, San Diego, at 11 percent, Irvine, at 2.2 percent and Santa Ana, with 1.6 percent. Mammoth followed the same trend but also included 1.7 percent of guests from Long Beach. There were 1,200 active hosts in Big Bear City, Big Bear Lake, and Mammoth Lakes at an average age of 43. Fifty-four percent of hosts were women. Typical host earnings in the past 12 months ranged from $13,300 in

Big Bear City to $20,500 in Mammoth Lakes. In total, Big Bear Lake hosts earned $11.7 million, $3.8 million by Big Bear City hosts and $7.7 million by Mammoth Lakes hosts. Brenda Chaney, associate agent at RE/MAX Big Bear on Big Bear Boulevard said buyers couldn’t find a better time to buy investment property than now. “Interest rates are the lowest in 20 years,” Chaney said. “They (the properties) don’t stay on the market very long.” The Airbnb report concluded by stating total host earnings for the three towns was $23 million, a season over season growth of 100 percent. The total number of bookings was 3,000, a growth of 50 percent over last year.
