Noteworthy happenings around the desert The Living Desert announces birth of Giraffe calf
On Friday, April 28 at approximately 9:30 am, The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens welcomed a male giraffe calf to the herd born to mother, Tuli, and father, Hesabu. The yet-to-be-named male calf weighs in at 185.9 pounds and stands 6 feet 3 inches tall. The calf is the largest giraffe born at The Living Desert. “Tuli and her calf are doing very well. The well-baby exam on April 29, showed that all his vitals are within the normal range, and he is progressing as expected,” says Dr. Kevin Leiske, Veterinarian of The Living Desert. The Living Desert is now home to a herd of eight giraffes, six males, and two females. The calf will continue to bond with mom behind-the-scenes, and his exhibit debut will be announced soon. Films on the Great Lawn returns to Sunnylands Sunnylands resumes its Films on the Great Lawn series with a trio of family-friendly movies that spotlight the Baby Boomers’ coming-of-age years. The movies are: “Stand by Me” – Four buddies go in search of the body of a boy lost in Oregon. May 12. “Now and Then” – Four women, recount a pivotal summer as 12-year-old best friends growing up in Indiana. May 19. “The Sandlot” – A neighborhood baseball team in the San Fernando Valley whose members take a new boy under their wing. May 26. All movies are shown outdoors, free of charge on a big screen. Filmgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and small picnics. Large coolers, alcohol, smoking, and pets are not permitted. With limited parking, carpooling is strongly advised. Joe Walsh brings his powerful guitar licks to Spotlight 29 Casino
G
uitar icon and a member of the legendary rock n’ roll group the Eagles, Joe Walsh makes his much-anticipated return to Spotlight 29 at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 19. Best known for his powerful guitar licks, Joe Walsh has entertained the masses and captivated his peers for more than three decades with such classics as “Funk #49,” “Walk Away,” “Life’s Been Good,” and “Ordinary Average Guy.” In 1969, Walsh found success with The James Gang, followed by a stint with Barnstorm, a trio he founded. In 1973, Joe released his first solo album, which proved him a legitimate solo act with a limitless career on the horizon. By 1975, he joined The Eagles, bringing a harder rock sound to the group with the acclaimed “Hotel Califor-
nia,” “The Long Run” and “Eagles Live.” In 1994, after a 14-year hiatus and several solo albums, The Eagles released “Hell Freezes Over,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts and sparked one of the most successful tours in music history. And in 1998 The Eagles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Walsh performed at the 2012 Grammy’s with Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and Dave Grohl. That June, Walsh released “Analog Man,” his first solo album in 20 years. In 2013, the award-winning “The History of The Eagles” showcased at Sundance, the two-part authorized documentary, and in February it aired on Showtime. In conjunction with the April release onto DVD the Eagles began their extensive The History of The Eagles

World Tour. On February 9, 2014, Walsh was featured in several songs on the CBS Special The Night The Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles. In 2014 Walsh played select solo shows as well as with the Eagles on The History of The Eagles World Tour. In 2015, Walsh performed with McCartney and Ringo Starr for Starr’s Induction into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Bucatini Trattoria Palm Desert The taste of success!

T
he restaurant biz is extremely competitive, especially in a resort area like the CV. So when an entrepreneur opens two successful “sister eateries” in the span of four years, he must be doing many things right. Enter Enzo Amodeo. Born in Sicily, where a cuisine is a form of artistic expression, Enzo enjoyed cooking for high school friends “just for fun.” After immigrating to America, he gath-
ered up experience in well-known eateries in New York, Chicago, and Orange County before striking out on his own. Bucatini Executive Chef Arturo Ubach has worked with and for Enzo since 1991 or “about ten restaurants ago.” “Enzo is the brain, a beautiful mind.” Chef Arturo said. “He always has vision. And he is able to bring that vision into the real world. It’s a gift.” According to Arturo, Enzo is a handson owner, prizes consistency in every aspect of his business, considers his guests priority one and gives every bit as much as he asks from his crew. Maybe that’s why he’s been such an unqualified success for so long. The original Bucatini opened its doors in La Quinta just over four years ago.

With its nod to industrial décor, ample portions, reasonable prices, and authentic recipes modernized and personalized via Enzo and Arturo’s tweaking, it found a following almost immediately. The latest Bucatini opened in Palm Desert in mid-December of 2016. It resembles the original with its airy dining room, floor-to-ceiling windows, and open pipework ceilings. But if anything, its vibe is more hip and energetic. And even in the absence of advertising, the new place has been packed from the start. Could it be the food? Yes! If you love Pizza, welcome to the Promised Land. A high-performance fire-breathing kiln bakes Bucatini’s pizzas quickly at temperatures of up to 850 degrees, making for the crispest of thin
crusts. “We make the dough and the sauce from scratch each day,” Enzo told me the last time we spoke. “We only use the best, the freshest ingredients.” Of course, Bucatini is so much more than a pizzeria. On the dinner menu, there are choices for meat, pasta or fish lovers … some traditional, others with a modern flare. Try the Tagliata Chianina (highest quality beef tenderloin grilled rare and delicately sliced, finished in a Cabernet and peppercorn reduction sauce), or a personal favorite the Salmone Alla Griglia (flaky and moist grilled salmon, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and herbs, served with sautéed and steamed broccoli florets). alm Canyon Theatre Co-Artistic Director Se Layne invites you to “Set your travel destination not to a place, but to a time…the ‘80s, when hair was spiked and rock was glam,” as imagined in “Rock of Ages,” which will run from May 12-May 21 at their Palm Springs downtown venue. Layne adds that the theater is being “transformed into the Sunset Strip for a live rock show that stars Nicholas Sloan as Drew and Jennifer Singer as Sherrie, the two young dreamers seeking stardom in the City of Angels, but facing many obstacles in the concrete jungle.”
“Rock of Ages” is what they call a “rock/ jukebox” musical and features the music of Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Steve Perry, Poison and Europe. Chris D’Arienzo provided the book, around some classic ‘80s tunes, including “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” “We Built This City,” “Sister Christian,” “The Final Countdown,” ”Here I Go Again” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.” The musical received its premiere in Los Angeles in 2005, going to Broadway for its 2009-2015 run, leading to touring replicas worldwide, finally finding a home at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, then moving to the Rio Hotel and Casino, where it recently ended a year-long run. Other co-stars are Jacob Samples, Kelly Peak, Robbie Wayne, Jasmine Shaffer, Lizzie Schmelling, Anthony Nannini and Tom Warrick. Ensemble members include Jackie LeBlanc, Allegra Angelo and

Museum Day An evening of free cultural heritage at Agua Caliente Cultural Museum

s the first Native American Museum to be part of the Smithsonian Institution’s Affiliate Program, the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum is excited to continue its legacy by announcing inclusion in International Museum Day on May 18, with a special open house from 6 to 8 p.m. This evening of free cultural heritage, with native singers, dancers and musicians performing both within the museum and outside on the Village Green, will be held in conjunction with VillageFest. The evening will include an exclusive viewing of a Native work basket before it is sealed away in secure storage. “This basket has returned home to the Coachella Valley just in time for International Museum Day,” says Julia Bussinger. ”After a four-month conservation project in conjunction with
the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Museum is truly excited to present a unique display of this precious artifact, along with a rare opportunity to meet and talk to its conservator, Marci Jefcoat Burton,” Bussinger added. We hope that this free live celebration, rooted in cultural heritage, is slated to become an annual event here in Palm Springs, as well as a lasting part of the global platform for building bridges through the sharing and understanding of a broader cultural heritage. ustin Lynch has been on a steady path toward superstardom. With three consecutive No. 1s and two Top five albums, he’s already been to the top of the charts with traditional country (“Cowboys and Angels”), party-rockers (“Where It’s At (Yep, Yep),” “Hell of a Night”) and simmering romance (“Mind Reader”). Dustin Lynch’s path will lead him to The Show at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa with special guest Tyler Rich. Dustin Lynch occupies a unique place in today’s country music. The Banda Brothers bring high energy Jazz to Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series
T
he Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series wows audiences week after week with its incredible lineup of top jazz musicians and this week, there’s yet another standout: the talented Banda Brothers Latin Jazz Sextet. Ramon Banda on drums, Tony Banda, the bassist, are joined by Francisco Torres on trombone, Javier Vergara on saxophone and flute, Chris Barron on piano, and Leo Corona on percussions. The Original Banda Brothers have played for 24 years as the anchors of Pancho Sanchez Grammy Award winning Latin Jazz Group. The Banda Brothers grew up in the city of Norwalk and began performing at the ages of 5 and 7 years old. They learned to play traditional Mexican songs in a lively west Texas style and learned to play American standards, classic Cha Cha’s, and R&B music. The Banda Brothers merge Afro-Latin music with American jazz bringing insight and imagination to jazz and Latin originals and classics. Torres, the trombonist, has been the director of Grammy award-winning Pancho Sanchez Latin Jazz Group and been part of Grammy award-winning Claire Fischer Big Band and Grammy awardwinning Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Francisco has played with 10 of LA’s best big bands, and is an in-demand clinician and guest artist. Francisco helped Jose Rizo create and conceive Jazz on the Latin Side All-Stars, which is a collection of LA’s best Latin Jazz musicians. Woodwind specialist Javier Vergara and native of Mexico City doubles on saxophone and flute on a wide range of tunes. He has been a mainstay with the Banda Brothers for over 20 years. His sound and energy is a bright spot for this group. Barron, the keyboardist, is a composer, arranger, and educator who has played with the Banda Brothers for over 25 years. Galaxy Avengers
Family looms large in Guardians sequel, but can’t derail the bonkers rocket ride of fun By Neil Pond
W
e’re saving the galaxy again? asks the rascally raccoon known as Rocket. “Awesome!” Many fans will have the same giddy reaction at the return of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the 2014 blockbuster about a ragtag, Robin Hood-ish crew of Marvel Comics space mercenaries. The gang from the original, which raked in more than $773 million at the box office, is also all aboard for the sequel, including writer/director James Gunn. Leading the pack again is Chris Pratt as the cocky, roguish pilot Peter Quill, who still has an “unspoken thing” for the emerald-skinned she-assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana). Former professional wrestler Dave Bautista is a man-mountain of red-tattooed muscle as Drax, whose hearty laugh sounds like it could rattle the rings around Saturn. Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), the mouthy raccoon genetically altered to become a master of weaponry and fighting, is given his own mini-story spinoff. And even though you really can’t tell, that’s Vin Diesel once more providing the voice of Baby Groot, the new, littlesprout incarnation of the hulking tree creature that was part of the Guardians crew in the first film. the Sovereigns, led by the imperialistic Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki). That sets off an intergalactic bounty hunt by the Ravagers, a group of motley thieves, smugglers and space pirates. But Peter Quill’s long-lost father, Ego (Kurt Russell), zooms to the rescue. When he takes the Guardians to his home planet, a world he created, he lays the news on them: He’s actually a cosmic deity, a “celestial.” That makes Peter, his spawn, a bona fide star child. The matter of Peter’s mixed DNA—his mother was an Earthling who died of a brain tumor when Peter was a child— looms large. And as most everyone knows, family matters can be complicated. There’s a difference and a distinction between fathers and daddies, Peter is reminded by Yondu (Michael Rooker), the blue-skinned bandit who raised him. And Gamora is reunited with her sister, the cybernetically enhanced Nebula (Karen Gillan), who has some major childhood grudges she still wants to settle. All of this zaps and zooms along, as did the first movie, to a witty stream of popcultural references. Peter compares his slow-burn relationship with Gamora to Sam and Diane from “Cheers,” and he tells her how much he longed for his dad to be like “Knight Rider” star David Hasselhoff. A wild, warping ride through space zones, in which characters’ faces contort in crazy, eye-popping ways, is a meta-reference to the work of legendary “Looney Tunes” cartoon animator Tex Avery. And there are VIP cameos, one by someone Marvel fans always expect to show up, and another by Sylvester Stallone, who mumbles a few lines and then disappears for most of the rest of the movie. Just like the original Guardians rocked out to Peter Quill’s “Awesome Mixtape Vol. I” cassette on his beloved Walkman, this one has an equally cool overlay of classic-rock gems to set the tone. It starts out with the Looking Glass super-70s hit “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl),” and continues through “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac, George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord,” Jay and the Americans’ “Come a Little Bit Closer,” Silver’s “Wham Bam Shang-ALang” and several more. ends with a big, boom-y, blowout bang before a much softer, sentimental coda, one orchestrated to the meditative strains of the Cat Stevens song “Father and Son.” But it’s a practically nonstop cascade of fast-
paced, bonkers, high-spirited fun, a far-out space-rocket ride with a cast of endearing characters that have definitely found their movie niche and intend to hang onto it.
