The Christian Jacob Trio performs exquisite jazz at Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series
T
he Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series wows audiences week after week with its incredible lineup of top jazz musicians and this week, there’s yet another standout: the talented Christian Jacob Trio. Jacob, piano, and leader is joined by Trey Henry on bass and Ray Brinker on drums. Jacob is a co-leader, arranger, and pianist with the Tierney Sutton Band, he also performs as a solo artist, leader, arranger, and conductor of big bands, and symphonies. Around the age of 10, Jabos was particularly moved by the improvisational abilities of Oscar Peterson. He soon developed perfect pitch and learned what musical feel is through interpreting various musical pieces. His first discovery on the piano was Dave Brubeck, and later Oscar Peterson who played in a different dimension, showing his classical techniques and personality. Jacob’s playing can be described as a post-bop modernist influenced by Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett. He plays crystalline melodies, and expansive harmonies, creating a dense, polyrhythmic thicket overlaying two or more Latin grooves from which his music springs out and hurdles forward. Jacob has impeccable taste and touch. Henry, the bassist, has performed with the LA Philharmonic, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the big bands of Bill Holman, Bob Florence, and Gerald Wilson. Henry has played with everyone from Henry Mancini to Johnny Cash, from Linda Ronstadt to Quincy Jones, from Ray Charles to Maynard Ferguson, and from Natalie Cole to Michelle Legrand. Trey has worked with Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, Sammy Nestico, Tom Scott, Steve Allen, and Lalo Schifrin. Brinker was a member of the Grammy-nominated “One o’clock Lab Band.” Brinker is a founding member of the Tier-

The band has received a Grammy nomination for five years in a row for best jazz vocal recording. Ray also received a Grammy nomination as a coarranger for best arrangement of a vocalist recording. The Christian Jacob Trio performs at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 6 at Pete Carlson’s Golf & Tennis’ Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series is located at 73741 Highway 111 in Palm Desert. A
secret Southern California residents have long known is that the coolest spot during the hot summer months is just a 10-minute tram ride away—to the alpine forest atop the majestic San Jacinto Mountains. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway’s Summer Pass makes “beating the heat” easy—and affordable—for everyone. Summer Pass holders also enjoy over 50 miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, and multiple campgrounds all within the 14,000-
acre pristine forest of the Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness Area. The Tram’s Mountain Station offers spectacular viewpoints, two restaurants, cocktail lounge, gift shop, natural history museum and two documentary-style movies about the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and the Mount San Jacinto State Park. First Tram up Monday through Friday is 10 a.m. and the first Tram up Saturday and Sunday is 8 a.m. The last Tram up daily is 8 p.m. and the last Tram down, 9:45 p.m. Just a short drive from many Southern California cities, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway’s Summer Pass is the perfect summer escape. Train Day, which is free for members or with paid park admission, features fun events centered around The Living Desert’s 3,300 feet of track at the Garden Railroad. Train Day includes a scavenger hunt, special trackless train rides around the zoo, and of course a Choo-ChooChurro special. Model train enthusiasts will enjoy informative train chats being offered at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. The scavenger hunt includes an indepth look at the three-quarter acre exhibit and encourages guests to find the funny, hidden and special features of the exhibit. The first child to finish with a correct and complete form will become the Conductor of the Day. All others that redeem their correct and complete form will receive a ticket to ride the trackless train. The Living Desert also will be offering a train adoption special. Guests who adopt a train, at the $50 level and above, during Train Day festivities, will receive a bonus behind the scenes tour of the train exhibit by the lead engineer (tour held at 11:30 a.m. on May 6 only). “We are proud of our model train exhibit and the volunteers that keep it run-
ning and National Train Day is a perfect way to showcase it,” says Allen Monroe, President/CEO of The Living Desert. “What started as a temporary exhibit during WildLights has turned into a big and beloved attraction here at The Living Desert.” One full-time employee and a crew of 30 volunteers run the Model Train Exhibit. The Living Desert’s Garden Railroad is open daily and during that time, at least seven trains are running continuously on the tracks. The popular exhibit covers over three-quarters of an acre and includes miniature landmarks such as the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore and ghost towns from the Old West. The model train exhibit also features an interactive component that allows budding railway conductors of all ages to control the paths of three separate train lines with just the touch of a button. National Train Day celebrates all things trains. From enthusiasts about the beginning of locomotive transport to engineers developing the future of rail travel, groups across the USA gather for events, celebration, education, and discovery. The Living Desert is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 760-3465694 or visit livingdesert.org.

‘Rhapsody & Blues’
Grammy award-winning jazz vocalist Diane Schuur headlines Coachella Valley Symphony’s concert at the McCallum
ALL THE RIGHT NOTES Diane Schuur, Grammy award-winning vocalist with the Coachella Valley Symphony on Friday, May 5. By Gary Walker Special for Desert Entertainer
G
rammy award-winning vocalist in contemporary jazz Diane Schuur is Coachella Valley Symphony’s headliner for its concert, “Rhapsody & Blues,” Friday. May 5, at Palm Desert’s McCallum Theatre. Pianist Paul Cracchiolo will perform George G e r s h w i n ’ s “Rhapsody in Blue,” and the Symphony, under the baton of Maestro John Mario, will play various audience favorites. Also featured is the Buddy Rogers Symphony. Tacoma-born Schuur has been blind since birth and was given the nickname “Deedles,” which she is still called today. Her father was an amateur pianist
and her mother’s collection of Dinah Washington and Duke Ellington records informed her musical style. She was able to sing Washington’s “What a Difference a Day Makes” when she was still a toddler. Her career spans three decades and includes two Grammy wins and three more nominations. Her musical collaborations include the Count Basie Orchestra, Barry Manilow, B.B. King and Ray Charles, to name but a few. Other appearances add to her eclectic career, including the White House, the Kennedy Center Honors for Stevie Wonder, PBS specials, and Sesame Street. She recently recorded, “I Remember You,” an homage to Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra. Cracchiolo has been the musical director for many local professional performers, such as Broadway star Donna Theodore, and has served as musical director for the annual McCallum Open Call programs and Cabaret Theatre West.

Film Noir Festival The 18th annual Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival begins its May 11-14 run at Palm Springs’ Camelot Theaters with the opening night feature, “Hollow Triumph,” a restored 35mm print of noir fatalism, which starred Paul Henreid, Joan Bennett, and Eduard Franz. Monika Henreid will be interviewed after the showing, followed by an audience Q&A. The following is the schedule of films and special guests: • Friday, May 12, 10 a.m.: “The Chase” (1946, Steve Cochran, Peter Lorre, Michele Morgan)
• 1 p.m.: “Side Street” (1949, Farley Granger, Cathy O’Donnell, Paul Kelly) • 4 p.m.: “All the King’s Men” (1949, Broderick Crawford, John Ireland) • 7:30 p.m. “Black Angel” (1946, Dan Duryea, Constance Dowling) Postscreening discussion with Richard Duryea. • Saturday, May 13, 10 a.m.: “Split Second” (1953, Stephen McNally, Paul Kelly, Alexis Smith) • 1 p.m.: “Address Unknown” (1944, Paul Lukas, Morris Carnovsky) • 4 p.m.: “Meet Danny Wilson” (1951, Frank Sinatra, Shelley Winters) • 7:30 p.m.: “Charley Varrick” (1973, Walter Matthau, Andy Robinson)Postscreening discussion with Andy Robinson • Sunday, May 14, 10 a.m.: “Desperate” (1947, Steve Brodie, Raymond Burr) • 1 p.m.: “The Body Snatcher” (1945,

curtain time bomb when two murderous escaped convicts (Stephen McNally and Paul Kelly) hiding in a Nevada ghost town with a group of hostages (Alexis Smith, Robert Paige, Keith Andes and Jan Sterling), are unaware that an atomic bomb test is imminent. The characters are well written (script by William Bowers and Irving Wallace), and Powell’s crisp direction makes this one of my Top 3. Sunday has the other two on my list: • “The Body Snatcher” is a hybrid Gothic horror/film noir B&W tale based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s short story about two characters (Karloff and Lugosi) who furnished non-willing cadavers for the scientific research of Dr. MacFarlane. This is their last film pairing.
FILM NOIR “Night and the City” featuring actor Richard Widmark. Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi) Post-screening discussion with Sara Karloff. • 4 p.m.: “Night and the City” (1950, Richard Widmark, Googie Withers. I recommend the entire program, but I recognize that not everyone can take that much time or that much film noir, which Arthur Lyons once defined for me as “A guy gets into trouble and it goes downhill from there.” So, here are my three special recommendations: • “Split Second” on Saturday is Dick Powell’s first (and effective) directorial effort, and it tells a ‘50s contemporary blending of noir and fear of the atom
“Night and the City” has been burned into my memory because I saw it at least five times (in a row) when I was laid up with a severe cold in a small Mexico City hotel for a day and couldn’t get anything on TV except this movie, because that station would take an American movie and show it continuously on the weekend. But that’s not why I recommend it. Richard Widmark is in his noir element as a manic con man caught up in London’s underworld by a cast of disreputable characters, played wonderfully by Francis L. Sullivan, Herbert Lom, Mike Mazurki and wrestler Stanislaus Zbyszko. The brilliant blacklisted Jukes Dassin directs. Curtain Time: Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival, May 11-14, the Palm Springs Cultural Center and Camelot Theatres. You can check out the schedule (as available) at arthurlyonsfilmnoir.org.

Iconic Celebrities
Heather James Fine Art presents Russell Young’s ‘Femme Fatale’ exhibition
H
eather James Fine Art presents the exhibitions “Femme Fatale” and “American Landscapes” showcasing several artworks by BritishAmerican Pop artist Russell Young, on view now through May 31. The oversized depictions of the iconic celebrities in “Femme Fatale,” including Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor, are women of intelligence, sex appeal, and talent. They are activists, humanitarians, and rebellious by nature. In contrast, “American Landscape” is a collection of paintings that crackle with a brittle energy and narrate the fragility and duality of the American Dream. In this series, Young questions the inherent fragility of a nation born of conflict and
bloodshed, a country both young in history and heart that promises everything and fears nothing. Young’s oversized depictions of celebrities, historical figures, and iconic American moments are both confessions and protests by a former insider grown disenchanted with modern sensationalism. Young studied photography, film, and graphic design at Chester Art College in Northern England, and later became a professional photographer. For 20 years, Young photographed such celebrities as Diana Ross, Paul Newman, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. Yet, Young grew distressed with the industry as creative decisions were increasingly made by corporate executives and decided to break away and focus on his own creative work.
18 | Desert Entertainer | May 4-10, 2017
Since then, Young has continued his critique of American celebrity with his series “Pig Portraits,” “Fame+Shame,” “Rebel Rebel,” and “Shoplifters of the World Unite.” A crucial characteristic of Young’s portraiture is his signature use of diamond dust, which he began using in 2007. We are attracted to what the diamond dust represents: luxury, riches, and notoriety. But, the physical characteristics of the diamond dust—its sharpness and hardness—contrast the sensibilities of those portrayed just beyond its shimmer. Heather James Fine Art is located at 45188 Portola Avenue in Palm Desert. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Sunday. For more information, visit heatherjames.com.
