Musical Harmony

The Andy Martin Quintet comes together for an evening of hot, burning jazz at Pete’s Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series

T

he Andy Martin Quintet brings its multitude of talent, experience, and performance to Pete Carlson’s Golf & Tennis’s Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series on Saturday, April 29. The quintet consists of Andy martin-trombone, Brian Scanlon-saxophone, Tom Ranier-piano, Trey Henry-bass, and Ray Brinker-drums. Martin was raised in a musical family and began playing in his teenage years. He soon developed great technique and is considered a world-class virtuoso. He has collaborated with jazz greats Carl Fontana, Pete Christlieb, Bobby Shew, and Eric Marienthal. Martin is currently performing with Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Scanlon has toured with entertainer Ben Vereen for 14 years, appeared on the Tonight Show Band for five years, and toured with Doc Severinsen’s Band for nine years. He has worked with Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie, B.B. King, the LA Philharmonic, Maureen McGovern, and recorded with Randy Newman and Rosemary Clooney. Scanlon is also a current member of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Ranier talents cover both the keyboards, woodwind instruments, and writing for the major award shows. His piano style mixes Bud Powell’s complexities, Oscar Peterson’s swing, blues, and bravura, Bill Evans chordal brilliance, and exploratory harmonies, and Chick Corea’s intricate and beautiful melodies. When Ranier performs live music as an improviser he thinks and feels projecting what is deep within himself through the music. Tom enjoys studio work which helps him stay fresh and become a better musician because he works on different projects and with different composers that broaden his scope. Henry has performed with everyone from Henry Mancini to Johnny Cash, from Linda Ronstadt to Quincy Jones, from Ray Charles to Maynard Ferguson, and from Natalie Cole to Michelle Le-

An Evening of Music Hits Martha Reeves & The Vandellas at ‘Evening Under the Stars’

DANCING IN PALM SPRINGS Martha Reeves & The Vandellas perform at the O’Donnell Golf Club against a backdrop of the majestic San Jacinto Mountains.

T

he iconic Motown group, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas will be the headline entertainment for the 24th annual AAP – Food Samaritans Evening Under the Stars gala, held on Saturday, May 6, at the O’Donnell Golf Club in Palm Springs. Martha Reeves & the Vandellas had, in their heyday, more than 26 hits and were a constant presence on the music charts, as well as on television and top music venues. Ten of their songs reached the top ten of the Billboard R&B singles chart, and two were R&B number one hits. Six of their songs were Top Ten Pop Hits on the Billboard Hot 100. They are most known for their major hits “Heat Wave,” “Dancing In The Street,” “Jimmy Mack,” and “Nowhere To Run.” Martha Reeves has been a Motown icon for decades. She and the Vandellas first performed with the likes of The Miracles, Stevie Wonder, the Supremes, and Marvin Gaye on the first Motown Review. Martha Reeves & the Vandellas sang behind Marvin and soon hit the charts with their own trifecta: “Come and Get These Memories,” “Love is Like

a Heat Wave,” and “Quicksand.” With the unmistakable voice that helped define “the sound of young America,” Reeves reigns today as one of music’s most beloved and acclaimed female singers. Reeves’ hits are legendary: They include the gospel-tinged “Nowhere to Run,” the classic soul favorite “My Baby Loves Me,” the pop anthem “Jimmy Mack,” and her signature, “Dancing In The Street.” Evening Under the Stars gala festivities will begin with a ‘quintessentially Palm Springs’ sunset cocktail hour on the grounds of the O’Donnell Golf Club against a backdrop of the majestic San Jacinto Mountains, widely regarded as one of the most festive cocktail receptions of the season. A short awards program will recognize a few inspirational honorees, followed by a delicious dinner, and a performance by Martha & the Vandellas. After their show, dancing will continue with DJ Jerry Bonham on the main stage followed by an amazing fireworks display. New American Cuisine with some European inspiration

Lavender Bistro, charming garden like setting complete with fountains By Lucinda Sue Crosby For Desert Entertainer

N

icolas Despras, who has crafted nine years of award-winning service and food at Lavender Bistro in La Quinta, has come by his considerable skills through both DNA and hard work. Nicolas represents a third generation of successful restauranteurs as his grandparents owned two bakeries back in Avignon, France. His father, Michel, has been involved since the mid-1970s with high-end So-Cal eateries like Chez Francois and Le St. Germaine (Los Angeles area) and Canyon Bistro, St. Germaine Indian Wells and Le Vallauris, working in partnership with another well-known area entrepreneur, Paul Bruggemans. Nicolas Despras began his hospitality career about 20 years ago in the St. Germaine kitchen as a line cook and has pretty much filled every position since then. Owning a restaurant, especially in a tourist mecca like the Coachella Valley, is a highly competitive business. So, extensive experience and training often make all the difference. And it doesn’t hurt to have one of the most charming venues in California! Picture an artistically designed house circa 1948 nestled among fragrant bushes and flowering trees in a garden-like setting complete with fountains. All the tables sport crisp linens and substantial cutlery while California’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle is on display as the dining room makes way for an expansive patio surrounded by cabanas with privacy curtains, which allows seating for 6 to 10 guests, and strings of fairy lights. The ambiance is warm and definitely upscale but guests are welcome to dine comfort-

food & wine ably dressed in “desert casual.” Nicolas is a firm believer in farm-to-table, local sourcing, and farmers’ markets. Fish arrive still scented by the ocean; their Scottish salmon is house-smoked; most desserts are hand-made daily in-house from scratch. The menu is ambitious, representing the best of New American Cuisine with some European inspiration artfully combined with more exotic influences like Asian curry and Mexicaninspired spices on a shrimp entrée. As Michel likes to say, “The menu is fluid.” The following are best-selling foodie favorites: Honey Brine Roasted Pork Chop (crème fraîche mashed potatoes, braised red cabbage, asparagus and spiced pineapple/kumquat chutney). Pistachio Crusted Colorado Rack of Lamb (accompanied by

scallop potatoes gratin, baby vegetable ratatouille with tomato concasse and pomegranate demi-glace). Maine Lobster Ravioli (half lobster tail, organic baby tomatoes, roasted corn, basil flourish and Lobster Bisque). Fresh Baked Apple Tart with Frangipane Caramel Sauce, and Rum Raisin Ice Cream. And let’s not forget the warm chocolate cake (aaahhhh!). The restaurant recommends reservations a week or so in advance for patio seating. Lavender’s happy hour offers lighter fare in the Fireside Lounge. The first two menu items are particular favorites of mine and I heartily recommend trying them together: Lavender Signature French Fries (Parmesan and Truffle Oil— rich and delish, the potatoes are perfectly

crisp) and the House Smoked King Salmon (dill crème fraîche and toast points). An extensive wine list is predominantly Californian with thoughtful additions from France and Spain. And do try the bar’s signature Lavender Botanical cocktail (organic Lavender Botanical vodka, cream Yvette, lavender simple syrup and fresh-squeezed lime juice served with a sugared rim). Lavender Bistro can be a romantic backdrop or a place to meet and greet new friends and old. It doesn’t have to be a special day to enjoy its many gifts— how about a Wednesday? You’ll find live music both indoors and out seven nights a week and the outgoing Nicolas, for whom customer service is priority one, will welcome you.

“We take pride in what we do,” Michel said, “and we want to give our guests a unique experience. Maybe that’s why they so often come back—with the next generation.” Take note: Along with the wallet-friendly Bar Bites Menu, Lavender Bistro offers other specials: Bottles of wine are halfprice on Tuesdays. Thursday is Prime Rib day and there’s no corkage fee in the patio or dining room only. Lavender Bistro also provides complete catering services, both on and off site. Lavender Bistro is located at 78073 Calle Barcelona in La Quinta. Open seven days a week from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Happy hour is held from 4 p.m. to closing. For reservations, call 760-564-5353 or visit lavenderbistro.com.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). You treat your love (or potential love) as an equal. This is the key to your success in relationships. “Equal” isn’t “same.” You respect differences and value them appropriately. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Your connection to an older person will be a highlight of the day. You’ll be creatively inspired by the traditions, manners and ways of doing things that have changed over the years.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Once you put your mind to it, you’ll be brimming with ideas for creating fun times with your loved ones. This is a worthy mental exercise if ever there was one, especially if you follow through on a few and bring a camera. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). A soul’s cry isn’t heard with the ears so much as the heart. You’ll extend yours today as you listen past what a loved one is saying and into the meaning and feeling of it. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). The reason you wrap a gift instead of just handing it over naked is that thoughtful presentation and slow reveals add excitement and specialness to our interactions. Don’t skip the ritual. Add to it instead. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). There will be many different factors acting on your decision-making process today. You’ll be motivated by a sense duty, driven by your own aesthetic desires and intrigued by the chance for political gain. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You’ll be tempted to let lethargy win, sleep late or take a nap. The thing is, you’ll only awaken feeling less vital. Get moving instead. A sweat-inducing activity will kick-start your energy. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Ask any practitioner of psychometry; things don’t have to be living to have a pulse. Objects have vibes. And if the energy of your things (namely, having too many of them) is cluttering your mind, a purge will free you. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Above all, you desire to offer the others something of value. It’s why you’re careful not to fall into the attention-seeking traps of our narcissistic age. Modesty and service are your callings of the day.

Tin Man

‘Tin Nation’ exhibition showcasing the work of Allen Zeleski in Palm Desert

ODA Gallery debuts the exhibition, “Tin Nation,” showcasing the work of Allen Zeleski from May 5-26. The opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 5, is part of the final installment of the season for Palm Desert First Weekend’s El Paseo Art Walk. Before plastic, toys were made from tin. Inspired by vintage toys found in a street market while he was living in Asia, Zeleski’s work features an inherent sense of whimsy, thought and provocation. The transition of his subjects explores the loss of childhood innocence and opens a dialogue on a more intellectual level. This collection is a blend of vintage Chinese toys and American pop culture. Katherine Hough, Curator for the Palm Springs Art Museum called his exhibition “bold, provocative, unexpected.”

Born dyslexic, Zeleski used pictures as his language of choice. This evolved into a career as a creative director, producing film, music, and photo shoots around the world. Despite his difficulty reading, Zeleski found he could write and is credited with screenplays for most of the major movie studios. His art, which has been hailed as “one of the most original and provocative collections of contemporary art,” is just one of his many talents. An artist reception is open to the public, there will be live acoustic music and a wine bar, which benefits Animal Samaritans. CODA Gallery is located at 73-400 El Paseo, it is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 760-3464661 or visit codagallery.com.

T

here are certain roles that certain actors are absolutely right to play, and award-winning Steve Fisher is perfect for the role of murderin-his-heart playwright Sidney Bruhl in Ira Levin’s “Deathtrap,” running one weekend only, April 27-30, at Palm Springs’ Palm Canyon Theatre. Other wellknown actors who have played Bruhl are Stacy Keach, John Cullum, Robert Reed and Farley Granger. “Deathtrap” holds the record for the longest running comedy-thriller on

Broadway and was nominated for the Best Play Tony Award in 1978. It ran for four years and almost 1800 performances. Its popularity grew with the 1982 film version starring Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve, and Dyan Cannon. The preface to the published script describes it as “something so evil that it infects all who touch it. The thing has a life of its own. In “Deathtrap,” Levin has taken the basic components of thrillers and horror stories; murder, deceit, innocent dialogue with hidden sinister meanings, plot reversals, unexpected turns of events, etc., and twisted and rearranged the pieces again and again.” PCT founder Dr. William “Bill” Layne directs, with costume design by Derik Shopinski and sets and lighting by CoArtistic Director J.W. Layne. Bruhl has hit a career-ending writ-

er’s block but has been sent a killer of a script by budding playwright Clifford Anderson (Nick Edwards), which Bruhl wants to offer as his own, of course after he invites the young man over and then quietly dispatches him. His wife (Shirley LeMaster) agrees to the plan, but plot twists intervene to turn the whole thing into a comedic kerfuffle. To add to the mix are Bruhl’s attorney (Larry Dyekman) and next-door-neighbor and psychic Helga Ten Dorp (Morgana Corelli), who show up at inopportune times. The play is not promoted as a “whodunnit,” but rather as a “who’ll do it?” It’s a short run, so don’t miss it. Curtain Time: “Deathtrap” by Ira Levin, 7 p.m. Thursday, April 27; 8 p.m. FridaySaturday, April 28-29; 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30, Palm Canyon Theatre, 538 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs. Tickets:

$29.50 general, $15 students with valid ID which must be purchased at the Box Office. For more information, call 760-323-5123 or visit palmcanyontheatre.org.

‘Clark Gable Slept Here’ The Desert Rose Playhouse in Rancho Mirage will present the West Coast premiere of Michael McKeever’s dark comedy, “Clark Gable Slept Here,” for a fourweek run, May 5-28. Theatre 29 News Theatre 29’s special presentation of “Rashomon” has been canceled, “because of health challenges for key production staff.” The remaining lineup for the current season stays intact. Applications for the Theatre 29 Summer Youth Theater Program is well into the planning stages and staff members say they’re ready “for this exciting educational experience in the lively arts!? The program will run June 26-July 30, culminating in two performances of “Disney’s Little Mermaid Jr.” The program will break into two age groups, 7-11 and 12-17. The cost is only $60 per student since a grant from the City of Twentynine Palms is keeping the program fee low. For more information, email Daigneault at z1077fm@gmail.com.

Whiz Kid

Chris Evans hangs up Captain America spandex for ‘Gifted,’ but he’s still got a battle to fight

IT’S ALL IN THE NUMBERS Octavia Spencer, McKenna Grace, and Chris Evans star in a heart-warming tale about a pint-size prodigy that will leave you with a smile. By Neil Pond

B

est known as Captain America, actor Chris Evans puts aside the superhero tights for Gifted. But he’s still got a battle to fight. Evans plays Frank, a Florida boat repairman who’s also been the guardian of his 7-year-old niece, Mary (McKenna Grace), since the suicide of her mother, Diane, when Mary was a baby. It’s clear that Mary is a phenomenon, if not an outright genius—while other students in her firstgrade class are learning to add two plus two, Mary is calculating square roots in her head, much to the astonishment of her teacher, Miss Bonnie (Jenny Slate). Bonnie and the principal (Elizabeth Marvel from “TV’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Homeland”) tell Frank that Mary is “gifted” and offer to place her in a special school that can raise her to “the level of scholarship that she deserves.” But Frank declines. He wants Mary to grow up like a “normal” kid, in

a normal school, not in an place where she’s pegged as an oddity. Cue the back story: Frank’s sister (Mary’s mother) was also a math genius, a number-crunching, headline-making superstar. And her suicide had something to do with the unbearable pressure she felt to solve an “unsolvable” mathematical enigma—and the pressure from her overbearing iceberg of a mother, Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan, who plays Lady Smallwood on TV’s “Sherlock”), a British-born Boston blueblood who now wants custody of little Mary. And guess what? Evelyn has a bit of math in her bones, as well. Maybe that’s got something to do with why she’s now so interested in her granddaughter… Director Marc Webb, whose previous films include “500 Days of Summer” and two Spider-Man flicks, gets nuanced, naturalistic performances from his cast, especially young McKenna Grace. At her young age, she’s already a TV and movie veteran of nearly 40 roles, in-

cluding playing Penny Kirkman on TV’s “Designated Survivor” and young Emma Swan on “Once Upon a Time.” Missing her two front teeth and with a bandage on her scuffed-up knee, spouting complex calculus one minute and watching “Spongebob Squarepants” the next, she’s very believable as a child bestowed with unfathomable super smarts, but very much still a kid. Evans proves he’s got chops beyond Captain America’s spandex—even though Gifted can’t resist playing off his buff, hunkish charms. “He’s the quiet, damaged, hot guy,” is how one of Bonnie’s female coworkers dreamily describes Frank. Not surprisingly, Bonnie and Frank find a charming romantic connection, which leads to a “Kramer vs. Kramer” style morning-after interruption—and possibly the movie’s funniest one-liner. Octavia Spencer plays Frank’s warmhearted next-door neighbor, Roberta, who provides the movie’s real conscience

and backbone. She gets to shake it down with Mary in a fun karaoke rendition of “Shame, Shame, Shame,” and Spencer’s very presence in a child-genius maththemed movie gives things a sort of halfpint “Hidden Figures” vibe. There’s a beautiful beach scene with a parable-like discussion of cats, sandpipers friends, and idiots. Another lovely sunset moment has a conversation about God, Jesus, and the afterlife, and ends with Frank telling Mary to “use your head, but don’t be afraid to believe in things, either.” There’s a one-eyed cat named Fred, a contentious courtroom showdown, a tearful separation, an equally tearful reunion, and the running theme about just how much smart, talented “exceptional” kids should be pushed to excel at the expense of experiencing “real life.” At one point, Mary’s grandmother tells her that immortality lies in the kind of mathematical accomplishments that her mother died trying to achieve. “If you succeed,” Evelyn tells her, “your name will live forever.” Perhaps, but what good is “living forever” as a math megamind if you can’t snuggle with your one-eyed cat—or frolic on the playground—with your friends today? Gifted likely won’t win any major awards, and it won’t live forever in anyone’s movie memory. But this heartwarming tale about a pint-size prodigy will leave you with a smile. Gifted Starring: Chris Evans, McKenna Grace, Jenny Slate and Lindsay Duncan Directed by Marc Webb Rated: PG-13 Theaters: Mary Pickford Theatre, Regal Cinemas Rancho Mirage Stadium 16, Regal Cinemas Indio Metro 8, Century Theatres Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert 10 Cinemas, Regal Cinemas Palm Springs Stadium 9, Century Theatres La Quinta, Camelot Theatres, Regency Theatres.
