The Azar Lawrence Quintet concert enlivens Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series

T
he Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series at Pete Carlson’s Golf & Tennis continues to bring world-class musician’s to the Valley. This week, Pete welcomes the Azar Lawrence Quintet at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. The Quintet includes Azar Lawrence on saxophone, Nolan Shaheed on trumpet, Theo Saunders on piano, Henry Franklin on bass, and Marvin “Smitty” Smith on drums. Lawrence, the quintets saxophonist, plays with great spirituality and has a distinctive sound that is full forced post be-bop. He plays with a deep virtuosity and expresses vivid ideas with a palpable texture in his sound. Lawrence has played many styles of music including Afro/Cuban, Avant Garde, Latin, modal, modern creative, and world fusion. Lawrence plays for the mind, body, soul, and the self. Shaheed began playing the violin at age 12, and soon after hearing Louis Armstrong made the switch to the trumpet. He enjoyed sports as much as music and became a track star in high school, and would continue to excel as a world-class runner. As a busy studio musician, he was Marvin Gaye’s musical director and has played with dozens of major artists including Count Basie, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Phil Collins, Tom Waits, and others. Shaheed has a great passion for recording other musicians and with his great energy loves to perform jazz the most, striving for his best, and enjoying to improvise from scratch. Saunders is a composer, arranger, and
virtuoso pianist who was influenced by his Russian parents, who were both actors, Theo accompanied his mom on piano at many Broadway Show auditions. Saunders approaches music with spontaneity and taking chances. He plays what he hears, hears into the future as far ahead as possible so the future becomes the present, the past is created linking it to the future, in the present. Henry Franklin affectionately known as “The Skipper,” grew up in the heart of L.A.’s central avenue jazz district. Influenced by his father who was a trumpeter and band leader, he learned the clarinet, piano, tap dancing, and studied with classical bassists, Al McKibbon, and George Morrow. He played on the No. 1 hit “Grazing in the Grass” with Hugh Masakela, and played on Stevie Wonders gold record “Secret Life of Plants.” As for Smith, the drummer began playing at the age of 3, under the influence of his father, who was also a percussionist. Smith has worked with Sting, Dave Holland, Sonny Rollins, Willie Nelson, Steve Coleman, and literally hundreds of jazz musicians. Noteworthy happenings around the desert Agua Caliente Tribe invests in Cathedral City The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has announced it is acquiring 12.5 acres for a development project in the heart of downtown Cathedral City, and it will contribute funds to relocate a fire station currently at the site. The Tribe will contribute $5.5 million to the City Urban Revitalization Corporation for the purpose of relocating and constructing the new fire station. In consideration of the contribution and the benefits associated with the development—which will create jobs and help revitalize downtown—the City Urban Revitalization Corporation will transfer the property to the Tribe. In total, the Tribe’s development area includes about 13 acres at the northwest corner of Date Palm Drive and East Palm Canyon Drive in Cathedral City. The Tribe plans to create a master plan for a new mixed-use entertainment and gam-
ing district, which is allowable and contemplated by the Tribe’s recent gaming compact signed by Governor Jerry Brown that took effect on Oct. 31, 2016. For more information about the Tribe, visit aguacaliente-nsn.gov.
Palm Springs Art Museum celebrates Earth Day Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert, The Galen, will host a free, community-wide Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden. Attendees will be able to participate in art projects, watch live demonstrations, sample delicious food, and beverages, and enjoy live music. Joshua Tree National Park offers mobile app Joshua Tree National Park just made it easier and faster to get into the park. The park is now offering a free mobile app which will allow visitors to prepay entrance fees. The app can be downloaded from the app store by searching, “JTNP Fee Pay: Park Pass.” Visitors can use debit and credit cards, Pay Pal and other major digital wallet systems. The purchaser will receive a specific digital pass which is shown at the entrance stations at the park. Passes that can be purchased online include the 7-day Single Vehicle Pass ($25), the 7-day Individual Pass for motorcycle, bicycle or pedestrian ($12) and the Joshua Tree National Park Annual Pass ($40). Be prepared to show a photo ID and passes are non-transferable.

elevision and film star is set to bring his much-loved comedy to Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa. Kevin James takes the stage on Saturday, April 22, for what promises to be a hilarious evening of stellar comedy. James began his career as a stand-up on the Long Island comedy scene. After being discovered at the 1996 Montreal Comedy Festival, he signed a network development deal to create his own sitcom. “The King of Queens,” which premiered in 1998, ran for nine seasons on CBS with James starring and executive producing, and it garnered him an Emmy nomination in 2006 for Outstanding

Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Concluding its run in 2007, the show continues to air daily in syndication across the country and around the world. James was also the producer, co-writer, and star of the hit comedies “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” 1 and 2, “Zookeeper,” and “Here Comes The Boom.” James made his feature film debut in 2005 in Columbia Pictures’ “Hitch” starring opposite Will Smith, and starred alongside Adam Sandler in “Pixels,” “Grown Ups,” “Grown Ups 2,” and “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.” In addition to his on-camera work, James’s voice has been featured in the animated films “Barn-
yard” for Nick Movies, as well as “Monster House,” “Hotel Transylvania,” and its sequel for Sony Pictures Animation. James is currently the star and executive producer of the sitcom “Kevin Can Wait” for Sony Television and CBS, which premiered in September of 2016. He recently starred in the feature “True Memoirs of an International Assassin” for Netflix, which was released this past November. M
ore than 60 restaurants across the Coachella Valley will ‘Make One Meal Matter’ on Thursday, April 27 when they participate in Dining Out for Life 2017 supporting Desert AIDS Project. Locally, an estimated 10,000 diners will eat breakfast, lunch or dinner during the annual event which also happens in cities across the United State and Canada. Dining Out for Life participating restaurants in the Coachella Valley have committed to contribute 33 percent or more of their food, beverage, and liquor gross sales to support Desert AIDS Project on April 27. “This is a unique opportunity for people to join the fight against HIV/AIDS. laywright A.R. Gurney’s works have a lot of fans here in the Coachella Valley and High Desert, and Coachella Valley Rep’s Artistic Director Ron Celona has chosen a winner for his final production of the season, which has the theme of “Love, Marriage, and Life Changing Events.” “Later Life,” running April 28-May 21, is a touching comedy about Austin, a divorced, oftentimes depressed banker in his 50s who attends a party around the corner from his Beacon Hill apartment where he meets Ruth, a woman with whom he almost had an affair many years ago. Celona notes that Austin is “an extremely pessimistic man who has spent his entire life believing that something terrible is going to happen to him. Ruth, a multiple divorcee whose life is in turmoil, warmly welcomes his attentions while trying to loosen his grip on depression. “As they fan the flames of their past attraction, their mutual friends look to Austin as Ruth’s last shot at normalcy.” This discovery happens amidst a freespirited party as friends rally ‘round the couple. Of particular interest is the director, Luke Yankee, a popular actor among desert audiences, having performed his oneman shows about his life and his hilarious and touching relationship with his mother, award-winning actress Eileen Heckart. Co-starring is Barbara Niles as Ruth, William Fair as Austin, with Teri Bibb and Joel Bryant playing multiple roles. manda Gari, granddaughter of Eddie Cantor, will be performing at A Toast to the Stars: The Palm Springs Variety Show. The event will be hosted under the stars, at the historic, private rancho estate known as “The Ratpack Hideaway.” Gari is a well known in the cabaret world, with her act showcasing her singing and acting gifts. In Los Angeles she has played the The Cinegrill, M Bar, Sterling’s, The Gardenia and many more. Gari also appeared in the Palm Springs area in the concert series “Musical Chairs” for several seasons. Gari’s act includes many impersonations, including one of Judy Garland. Overall, it’s turned heads that she has been cast a record three times as “The Greatest Entertainer” in three different plays. She is also recognized from her television roles on “General Hospital,” “Ryan’s Hope,” “Victorious” and “President Wolfman.” Currently, she is a cast member of the hit comedy web series, “Old Dogs & New Tricks.” Gari’s legacy is from a line of entertainers and achievers. She has inherited the “Banjo Eyes” of her grandfather, the legendary Eddie Cantor. Her mother, Janet Gari, the fifth daughter of Eddie. Her father is Broadway actor Roberto Gari, who is known for painted the famous portrait of Judy Garland that hung in the lobby of the Palace Theatre in New York for many years. Gari will be invited on stage by the dynamic house trio, known as The Palm Springs Variety Show. Featuring Francesca Amari, Gilmore Rizzo, and Bryan Miller. The show, which is patterned after the quintessential Rat Pack party on stage, is filled with music from composers, singers, TV and movie stars who have had homes in the Coachella Valley. In addition to and immediately preceding each event, guests will have an opportunity to experience FSA’s Legends and Icons Tour for a separate additional fee.

Heavy metal thunder, brawny brawls, vehicular mayhem: All in a day’s work for ‘The Fate of the Furious’
ALL IN A DAYS WORK “The Fate of the Furious” serves up heaping helpings of ridiculously over-the-top vehicular mayhem wrapped around themes of brotherhood, loyalty and family. By Neil Pond

odge a gigantic, swinging wrecking ball? Gear-jam a souped-up jalopy, on fire, in reverse, through the streets of Havana? Parachute—into an airplane? No problem! For the “Fast & Furious” crew, it’s all in a day’s work. “The Fate of the Furious,” the eighth movie in the F&F franchise, which began back in 2001, reunites the films’ core crew of Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Tyrese Gibson, and later additions Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Director F. Gary Gray (“Straight Outta Compton”) knows what fans want, and he serves it up: heaping helpings of heavy metal thunder, brawny brawls and ridiculously over-the-top vehicular mayhem, all wrapped around themes of brotherhood, loyalty and “family.” With Diesel, Johnson, Statham and Gibson’s characters, premature hair loss must run in this family. No matter how fast they drive, they can’t outrun that.
Anyway, Kurt Russell reprises his role, introduced in “Furious 7,” as government operative Mr. Nobody, now with a sidekick (Scott Eastwood). Kristofer Hivju, who plays Tormund Giantsbane on the HBO series “Game of Thrones,” makes for a nasty henchman—and makes up for some of his castmates’ absence of hair. Oscar-winning Charlize Theron is newly on board as an icy villainess known as Cipher, with a dastardly plan to hack into the international power grid, start World War III—and rope in ringleader Dom (Diesel) by blackmailing him, forcing him to betray his team. She runs her entire rig from a “ghost” airplane high above the Earth. And another Oscar winner, Helen Mirren, makes a cameo. As the F&F movies got bigger, boomier and more Furious-er, audiences came to expect ever more outlandish stunts and setups. So plots, plausibility and physics took backseats to more imaginative scenarios unbound by laws of gravity, continuity or even common sense—which is why, here, you can have a cascade of emp-

ty cars spilling onto a busy city street from a parking garage, apparently without a casualty or even injury to a single pedestrian below. Or how, as a matter of fact, with all the explosions, flying debris and highvelocity steel on the streets and elsewhere, very few people ever seem to be injured, or even get their wardrobe or hair mussed. A lengthy climactic pursuit across a frozen lake, involving a prolonged hail of gunfire, tracer missiles and a series of massive explosions, ends with a of shot all of the F&F crew looking like the actors just stepped out of their trailers, beside vehicles fresh off a showroom floor. And no one ever seems to die—at least for long. It would be a spoiler to say much more. Speaking of that, the franchise is still feeling the loss of Paul Walker, who played Brian O’Connor. His death in 2013, in a real-world car crash, left a hole in the hearts of F&F fans that the movies continued to address, in various ways— although they pretended that his character simply drove off, into the sunset. Brian—and Walker—get another salute
in “The Fate of the Furious,” but you’ll have to wait until the very end to find out how. Director Gray knows that the high octane needs to be balanced with humor, and he brings plenty of that, too. There’s a lot of levity in the script—by screenwriter Chris Morgan, who penned four previous outings—especially in the banter, chatter and riffing between characters. The movie really comes to life when it swivels over to the meaty love-hate bromance between Johnson and Statham’s characters. Bridges and Gibson get laughs when they rib each other or spar over the attention of the sexy computer hacker Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel, who plays Missandei on “Game of Thrones”). It’s all good, gear-jamming, blast-’em, blow-it-up fun, mainly for fans who’ve been faithful to the franchise all along. Everyone else might feel a bit lost, especially with the cameo appearances by folks who pop in from previous films. In TV terms, “jumping the shark” is when a series does something so ridiculous, so attention-grabbing and gimmicky, it marks a low point—a desperate attempt to keep viewers’ interest. It’s rooted in a 1977 episode of “Happy Days,” when Fonzie went waterskiing in Hawaii and—literally—jumped over a shark. In The Fate of the Furious, Dom doesn’t jump a shark, but a nuclear submarine—then it explodes, and he gets up and kisses his wife. All in a day’s work.
