Help fight graffiti at Joshua Tree National Park Joshua Tree National Park has experienced a notable increase in visitors. With that increase, it means an increase of graffiti and acts of intentional vandalism within the park. The park, in its efforts to more closely monitor and mitigate graffiti, is asking for the public’s help and providing some easy ways for visitors to aid in the process. Park officials ask visitors to report incidents of graffiti that they encounter to a new e-mail address, jotr_graffiti@ nps.gov. In addition, new graffiti reporting forms will be available at park visitor centers and entrance stations. Please provide a good, detailed description of the location. Photos and GPS coordinates are also very helpful. Joshua Tree is a magical and unique landscape. Your vigilance will insure that the park stays that way. For more information, visit nps.gov/jotr.

The Fresh Fish Joint

Fisherman’s Market & Grill is where the fish catches you By Lucinda Sue Crosby For Desert Entertainer

A

s a member of the third generation in his family to wrest a living from the Pacific Ocean, Louis Pagano accumulated considerable personal expertise in catching, storing, buying and selling the highest quality seafood. His hard work and body of knowledge prepared him so well for his foray into the eatery business that in the past couple of decades, his Fisherman’s Market and Grill/Fisherman’s Grotto/Fisherman’s Landing and Shanghai Red’s locations have accumulated 152 tasty dishes, 18 chefs, and 16 dining awards! By the time Louis arrived in the Coachella Valley, he’d already decided to combine his fish catching and harvesting chops with his passion to share each bountiful catch with family and friends. A unique vision to combine a “self-order” restaurant with a specialty seafood market providing raw and/or cooked products set his restaurants apart from the competition. Now CEO of a still fast-growing enterprise, Pagano believes that, no matter how great or authentic a fish recipe is, there’s only one way to guarantee the result—a philosophy he refers to as “from our boat to you.” His motto: “Simply purchase the freshest and finest quality ... all the time.” As you may imagine, Louis expanded the “to go” food concept exponentially. Menus and a chalkboard listing an array of fish-centric sandwiches, tacos, fish n’ chips, kabobs, steamers, soups, and pasta makes thoughtful reading while bulk offerings are displayed artfully in chilled glass-fronted cases. You can dine in or pick and choose exactly the halibut or ahi or salmon chunk that most appeals. Then, the purchase can either be wrapped for home preparation and con-

sumption—or cooked to your specification on the spot. Talk about fresh! Friendly and helpful employees are happy to recommend personal favorites. The mood is welcoming and casual with outdoor dining options

in the shade or under the stars available. Pagano’s approach to Fisherman’s Market and Grill has some rave reviews from famous folk. (For example, Celebrity Chef Rachael Ray wrote, “In

After eating a Shanghai Red’s World Famous Baja Fish Taco he enthused, “Truly extraordinary; truly, truly extraordinary!”) The absolute freshest seafood possible will always be the chain’s primary driving force … but yummy recipes don’t hurt. My personal favorites include the fish tacos, the seared and peppered ahi and the charbroiled Hawaiian Ono. Beef and chicken selections are also available. Limited service restaurants sometimes get a bad rap. But if you love seafood as much as I do, trust The Fisherman. Locations throughout the valley, noon time and late night happy hours, a choice of either a quick and efficient or more leisurely experience, early bird specials plus a fun and casual décor—all these niceties ensure that Louis Pagano’s fish will catch you.

Then quietly achieve your aims under the radar. CANCER (June 22-July 22). The ancient oracle cautions that when you boil water over an open flame, there’s a chance that one will extinguish the other. There’s a balance here to respect. Your watchful eye will keep it all in check. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). By now, it’s almost comical how many times you’ve been thwarted from a certain action. You’re starting to wonder whether the

Fates are against you! If so, it only means there is something better in store for you. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). It’s typical for you to nurture others in need as if you were feeding yourself. These days, you actually care for them better than that. Take a breath and ask who really needs it more. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). With the current zeitgeist possessing so many celebrity showoffs and egos, sometimes it’s difficult to speak colloquially and humbly at the same time. Try. The prize for succeeding is true connection. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). If it’s not working, add more compassion and see what that does. If that doesn’t fix it, go down the list and try the next virtue. Maybe modesty is needed. Maybe patience or frugality. You can fix this through goodness. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Compromise will be better than confrontation in today’s case. The others need to feel listened to. This is, of course, best achieved when they actually are listened to! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Some would have you believe that life is about sensual experiences, insider knowledge and generally making other people jealous. Ignore them today. The best life is about compassion and connection. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You don’t want to drift into the background, nor do you think that you’re the most interesting person in the room. You just aim to hold your own, and that’s a solid place to stay today. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You are well-matched today, as your partners and opponents (often the same person) will have equal but very different strengths. Winners tip: In the end, this is a mental game.

She Has All The Answers

Coyote Stageworks presents Gloria Loring in the warm-hearted and witty comedy/drama, ‘The Lady With All The Answers’

C

oyote StageWorks, the Coachella Valley-based award-winning Actors’ Equity professional theater company will conclude its 2016-2017 theatrical season with a production of “The Lady With All the Answers,” a popular one-woman play that will feature Coachella Valley favorite, Gloria Loring, as she portrays the beloved American advice columnist Ann Landers. This heartwarming comedy/drama by writer, playwright, actor and producer David Rambo gives us a chance to get up close and personal with “Eppie” Lederer, better known to the world as Ann Landers. This folksy, funny, and straightforward one-woman play is set in Eppie’s plush, traditionally furnished liv-

ing room on a late night in 1975. Eppie ominously lets on in the show’s first few minutes that she is preparing to write the “most important column of my career.” But like many another journalist facing a deadline, she insists on exhausting all forms of procrastination before settling down to crank out her copy. Instead of rapping out those few momentous paragraphs, Eppie entertains the audience with cozy tales of her colorful history, interspersing these with readings of some of her favorite letters, including questions about nude housekeeping, sex in a motorcycle helmet, sibling rivalries, addiction, religion and wandering spouses. The play will star renowned actress

Gloria Loring, of “Days of Our Lives” fame, who blew away audiences with her award-winning performance in the Coyote StageWorks production of “Love, Loss and What I Wore.” “The Chicago Tribune” calls the play “… warmhearted …highly entertaining, and frequently moving…” and the “Los Angeles Times” describes it as “… engaging from beginning to end.” “The Lady With All the Answers,” runs April 14 through April 23, Annenberg Theater in the Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 N. Museum Dr., Palm Springs. To purchase individual tickets or subscriptions, call 760-3254490 or visit annenbergtheater.org.

oachella Valley favorite Joyce Bulifant will join A Toast to the Stars: The Palm Springs Variety Show as their special guest at the private rancho estate “The Rat Pack Hideaway.” Bulifant charms with her signature, sweet, Southern lilting voice. Audiences remember her as Marie Slaughter on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” playing the wife of Gavin MacLeod’s Murray Slaughter. Over the years, Bulifant has been regularly in the public eye with recurring roles on “The Bill Cosby Show,” “Big John, Little John,” “Flo” and “Weird Science.” On the big screen, she is known for her appearance in the star-studded comedy “Airplane.” Bulifant’s career is full of big wins and heartbreaking misses, which makes for heartfelt and intimate stories. She unveils what goes on “backstage,” and speaks to what goes into “making it” as an actress in Hollywood. Bulifant is currently happily married to the talented actor and musician Roger Perry, who will join his wife on stage as her accompanist when she sings. Not always so lucky in love, Bulifant’s three previous marriages to Hollywood producers and actors give her plenty to dish. She is currently working on her autobiography “Life With My Four Hollywood Husbands.” Patterned after the quintessential Rat Pack party on stage, The Palm Springs

Variety Show, features Francesca Amari, crooner Gilmore Rizzo and accompanying them will be Bryan Miller. In addition to and immediately preceding each event, guests will have an opportunity to experience FSA’s “Legends and Icons Tour.” For a separate additional fee, guests will see more than 50 celebrity homes, with the last stop being at “The Rat Pack Hideaway” for the 6 p.m. dinner and show. The tour and the evening event may be purchased together or separately. For reservations or additional information, call Five Star Adventures Tours and Events at 760-200-9483, or visit fsatours.com.

Hard Times

Freeman, Caine and Arkin are geriatric heist men in ‘Going in Style’

A PIECE OF PENSION PIE Three lifelong retirees (Freeman, Caine, and Arkin) fall into desperate financial straits, so they hatch a plan to rob the bank that screwed them. By Neil Pond

W

hen the tide of fortune turns against three lifelong retirees, leaving them in desperate financial straits, they hatch a plan to rob the bank that screwed them. In Hollywood, that’s what called a “high concept” movie, a film with a premise that can be easily, neatly described in just a few words. Hollywood loves high concepts; they’re easy to market and audiences “get” them right away. And if this one sounds familiar, it’s because it was a movie already, in 1979, with George Burns, Art Carney, and Lee Strasburg. This time around, it’s Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Alan Arkin as Willie, Joe and Albert, the trio of Brooklyn geriatrics who are spurred into action when they find out the steel mill for which they used to work is being shut down and financially reconfigured in a corporate spasm of layoffs, mergers, and offshore outsourcing. To add to the insult and injury, the company’s pension fund has been dissolved and their monthly payments frozen and used to pay off debt—and managed by their local bank, which has also

put the hard squeeze on Joe, threatening to foreclose on his house. Times are tough, the wolf is at the door and Willie, Joe and Albert are down to pinching pennies—and foregoing their usual daily indulgence of dessert at the local diner. But the saucy waitress (Siobhan Fallon Hogan) brings them a serving anyway. “Always have your pie,” she tells them. “Life is short.” When they decide to get back their pension pie, they seek out and enlist the aid of a “lowlife” (John Ortiz), who agrees to school them in how to plan and plot the robbery. That introduces a snazzy segment in the movie that’s kind of like “Grumpy Old Men” meets “Oceans 11.” Everything about “Going in Style” is geared for comedy, but it’s impossible to miss the serious, timely theme on which it’s built: greedy institutions that don’t care about customers or employees—or old people. “Banks practically destroyed this country,” says Joe, who was misled with a promotional “teaser rate” by his bank’s loan officer (Josh Pais) and then saw his mortgage payments triple. “They crushed a lot of people’s dreams.” Director Zach Braff, who starred as Dr. Dorian on TV’s “Scrubs” and previously

directed “Garden State” and “Wish I Was Here,” keeps things light and lively and gets fine performances from his three leading men—Oscar winners all around, who share 11 nominations between them— and also from his game supporting cast. Ann-Margaret plays a sex-kitten grandma with the hots for Albert. “Saturday Night Live’s” Keenan Thompson makes the most of every moment as a grocery store manager where the three senior citizens go to rehearse their heist. Matt Dillion is a befuddled police detective who’s always one step behind the oldtimers. “Back to the Future’s” Christopher Lloyd is a crazy neighborhood coot. And kids almost steal the show. Joey King, who starred on the previous season of “Fargo” and in last year’s “Independence Day,” has a significant role as Joe’s adoring teenage granddaughter, Brooklyn. Willie has a cute granddaughter, too—played by young Ashley Aufderheide, whose face on his wristwatch becomes an integral part of the plotline. And Jeremy Schinder gets a chuckle—or two—as a young musician with a yearning to ditch his sax and spread his wings in dance, like Beyoncé.

Braff, working from a screenplay by Theodore Melfi (who directed last year’s “Hidden Figures”) uses broad, something-for-everybody strokes, even though the movie’s default audience will probably age-shift toward the demo of its three main actors (i.e., older). There’s slapstick, witty banter, quippy one-liners and a cross-generational tone to the humor that never gets smutty or crass. The soundtrack includes tunes by Dean Martin, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke alongside A Tribe Called Quest and Mark Ronson & Mystikal. And there’s one strategically placed F-bomb. Alongside the funny business, there’s also plenty of sweetness and affection, as when Willie plants a warm kiss on his computer screen on the image of his granddaughter, and Joe dutifully meets Brooklyn every day to walk her home after school. Early in the movie, Joe floats the stickup idea to Willie and Al, who give him instant push-back. Younger robbers often fail—or get caught and go to jail, says Willie. What makes Joe think they could pull it off? “We’ve got skills, experience, knowledge…” Joe points out. “Arthritis… shingles… gout…” counters Willie. “Going in Style” has the ingredients of a warm, welcome night out for moviegoers who don’t want superheroes, bombastic special effects, space aliens, raunchy jokes or 3-D cartoons. And everybody gets a piece of pie.
