Noteworthy happenings around the desert O’Bayley Communications announces new Advertising Manager O’Bayley Communications, announced that Liz Bucio has been added to the team as the new Advertising Manager. The McCallum Theatre Concert Band bring Gershwin’s classic ‘An American in Paris’ to the stage
T
he McCallum Theatre Concert Band returns for its 5th annual performance with Gershwin’s classic “An American in Paris.” The performance will be conducted by McCallum Theatre President and CEO Mitch Gershenfeld. It’s an afternoon performance for the entire family with 40 of Hollywood’s finest musicians playing stirring marches, band classics and popular tunes. This year’s guest conductor Sylvia Gregoire will conduct the “Stars and Stripes Forever March” by John Philip Sousa. Free ice cream is available after the show. The McCallum Theatre Concert Band brings together the finest musicians, all of whom work in the Los Angeles area, playing for film and television as well as

symphony orchestras, operas and ballets. “There was a time in this country when most towns had concert bands,” Mitch commented, “and I thought the McCallum Theatre should honor that tradition with our own concert band.” In bringing together the Concert Band, Mitch says, “We have an ensemble of such skill and experience that even John Philip Sousa himself would be in awe! You’re heard these musicians in countless movies and television shows and we’re thrilled they will be on our stage again this year for this concert.” Gershenfeld began his career as a musician in his hometown of Philadelphia, and performed with symphony orchestras, Broadway road companies and in
recording studios. “I loved playing in concert bands growing up,” Mitch says, “and that led me to a career in music, which led to arts management and, ultimately, to the McCallum Theatre.” Gershenfeld joined the McCallum Theater in 2000 as Director of Operations and Presentations and in 2012 became President and CEO. he Jeff Hamilton Trio brings their music that is full of energy, feeling, and precision that expresses what the true nature of jazz music is all about to Pete Carlson’s Jazz for Jazz Lovers series. The trio includes drummer Jeff Hamilton, Christoph Luty on bass, and Tamir Hendelman on piano. This trio boasts one of the tightest knit sounds, having worked together for 17 years. Hamilton is one of the most in-demand drummers who plays with a versatile, driving, technical style that is full of superlatives. Hamilton plays at the highest standard, and can be powerful yet soft, understated, and riveting. Hamilton was influenced by Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Mel Lewis, and Shelley Manne. Jeff has worked with dozens of jazz greats. Jeff won the LA Jazz Society Musician of the Year Award with John Clayton, performed on Natalie Cole’s film “Unforgettable,” and on Oscar Peterson’s documentary “Life in the Key of Oscar.” As bassist, Luty plays with a big, full, fat, natural sound that is swinging, lyrical, melodic, and articulate. He has studied with bassist John Clayton. Luty has played with the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Diana Krall, Dave Brubeck, Shirley Horn,
Milt Jackson, Bill Watrous, Harry Allen, Anthony Wilson, Bill Cunliffe, John Pizzarelli, Dena Derose, Warren Vache, Curtis Stigers, and Howlett Smith. Tamir Hendelman, an award-winning pianist, has played with many jazz greats including Teddy Edwards, John & Jeff Clayton, Janis Mann, Natalie Cole, Barbara Streisand and countless others. Hendelman won the Yamaha National Keyboard Competition at the age of 14. Hendelman has won awards from ASCAP, and the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts. Hendelman’s playing can be described as exhilarating, intense, sensitive, introspective, captivating, hard swinging, dynamic, flawless, versatile, warm, with a feather-like touch. Hendelman was influenced by Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Oscar Peterson, and the classical composer Ravel. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 25. Bulletproof funk, anyone? Kool & the Gang brings all that and tough, jazzy arrangements to the valley

unk and soul stars Kool & the Gang, the longest running R&B group in history, will be making a stop at Spotlight 29 Casino. Kool &The Gang have sold more than 70 million albums worldwide and influenced the music of three generations. Thanks to songs like “Celebration,” “Cherish,” “Jungle Boogie,” “Summer Madness” and “Open Sesame,” the group has earned two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, nine Top Ten Pop hits, and 31 gold and platinum albums. Kool & The Gang has performed continuously for the past 45 years, longer than any R&B group in history. Their bulletproof funk and tough, jazzy ar-

illie Jean King, tennis great and one of the 20th century’s most respected and influential people, will headline the second-annual ANA Inspiring Women in Sports Conference, tournament officials announced today. The conference takes place on Tuesday, March 28 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, in advance of the ANA Inspiration, the LPGA’s first major championship of the season. “It is important that all of us—especially women—have an opportunity to participate in events like the ANA Inspiring Women in Sports Conference,” says King. “Sports are a microcosm of society and athletes have an opportunity to use their sport as a platform to enact change and inspire others. I look forward to joining these world-class athletes and having a candid discussion about the importance of action and change in sports and in society.” King, a sports icon and social justice pioneer who became the first female
athlete to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, will deliver the keynote address followed by a question-and-answer session with conference emcee Julie Foudy. Other participants include former world No. 1 tennis star Maria Sharapova, three-time Olympic Gold medal-winning gymnast Aly Raisman, 2014 ANA Inspiration champion Lexi Thompson, ESPN’s SportsCenter anchor Cari Champion and U.S. women’s softball team Gold medalist and ESPN’s Sunday night baseball analyst Jessica Mendoza. Tennis star Maria Sharapova added: “I am honored to have an opportunity to spend time with so many inspiring women and tell the story of my journey as an athlete,” Sharapova says. “Tennis and golf are similar in many ways and this tournament is one of the best in the world, similar to one of our Grand Slams. LeAnn Rimes headlines a powerful Desert Symphony anniversary gala and concert

he Desert Symphony is celebrating its 28th Anniversary with a gala and concert starring the incomparable LeAnn Rimes. In addition, the Desert Symphony will be honoring Ruta Lee, whose career has included both stage and screen, with the Amadeus Award for her philanthropy and dedication to the Performing Arts. She is the first woman to receive this prestigious award and joins the ranks of Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, John Tesh, Jack Jones, Ted Giatas, and last year’s recipient Harold Matzner. Rimes, the star of the gala, has sold more than 37 million albums, won two Grammy Awards, three Academy of Country Music Awards, and 12 Billboard Music Awards. Rimes is the youngest re-

Even better: The work featured at this year’s festival spans 25 countries—from Russia, France, Japan, Colombia, Italy, Nigeria, Peru and beyond. In all, 28 mediums and categories exhibiting painting, sculpture, jewelry, wearable-art fashion, photography, ceramics and more will be presented for fesitivalgoers and art collectors to purchase directly from the artists. The event takes place at the luxurious Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, where its grass concourse is transformed into a cosmopolitan hub of expression and creativity. eAnn Rimes headlines the Desert Symphony’s 28th Anniversary Gala Celebration Saturday evening, April 1, at Palm Desert’s McCallum Theatre, and actress Ruta Lee will receive the Amadeus Award. Rimes’ portion of the evening in the second half of the concert will include “Blue,” in which she is backed by the lushness of the symphony sound, followed by such hits as “Nothin’ Better to Do,” “Probably Wouldn’t Be This Way,” a Patsy Cline Medley, “The Story,” “Spitfire,” “Borrowed,” “Outrageous Love,” “Mother,” “Can’t Fight the Moonlight,” “What I Cannot Change” and “Summertime.” Ruta Lee, the first woman Amadeus Award recipient, is being recognized as a strong supporter of the Desert Symphony, along with her successes as a multi-talented actor, singer and philanthropist. The co-star of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” says her proudest achievements have been with her many charitable organizations, especially “The Thalians.” For 50 years, “She has been shining into the darkness of mental illness and bringing it into the light of healing.” Besides performing dramatically in several film and television roles, Rimes has been nominated for eight Grammys, winning twice, taking top honors from the Academy of Country Music, American Music Awards, the Country Music Association, CMT Music Awards, GMA Dove Awards and a special Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Country Music. Fine art meets the all things ‘auto’ in compelling show

rt & Automobiles, hosted by Cambria Gallery and Renova Solar, will showcase fine art and automobiles both inside and outside of the Cambria Gallery on Cook Street in Palm Desert. The featured artist is Andreas Somogyi of Seven Sixty Automotive Group, while the notable “Pinstripe Chris” will be painting live. The event is open to the public with donations in any amount requested. The event will be catered by Il Corso serving appetizers, along with a variety of wines and local craft beers available. There will be a live and silent auction, including a recently completed painting donated by Somogyi. His passion is building custom cars and creating large scale automotive racing paintings and metal sculptures. His work captures bold design, curvaceous lines, and streamlined looks.
Chris Dunlop, aka “Pinstripe Chris,” is an automotive design and render artist. He started out as an automotive painter that specialized in custom paint and high end restoration work on classic and exotic cars. From there he began airbrushing, doing sharpie art, and pinstriping. His work showcases custom cars, hot rods, and exotics. With this event all proceeds raised from the event will go to Desert Cancer Foundation to help Coachella Valley residents who are uninsured or underinsured to obtain screenings, diagnosis and treatment for cancer as well as allied diseases. An Art Event to Cherish La Quinta hosts the dynamic Washington Street Art Walk

ne hundred amazing artists will converge in La Quinta at the Washington Park Center, for the Washington Street Art Walk. The art gathering is scheduled for Saturday, March 25 and Sunday, March 26. The Washington Street Art Walk will feature artists presenting their own original work in all mediums of fine art, including paintings in acrylic, oils, watercolor, photography, etchings, sculpture in clay, glass, metal, stone and wood. Each artist will be present to meet with the public. All work is available for purchase. The featured artist is Linda Perkins, who’s pieces tell stories, stories that manifest over time, and in layers. They evolve organically, and observers tend to

Diversity Days Cathedral City celebrates diversity in memorable annual event

he 3rd Annual Cathedral City LGBT Days, celebrates the lives, history, and wonderful accomplishments the LGBT community has contributed in making Cathedral City one of the “most livable” cities in America and a testament to its perfect equality score by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. The festival begins with an Opening Night Kick-off Celebration at the Civic Center Plaza in Downtown Cathedral City, on Friday, March 24 from 5– 9 p.m. with a free performance by the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus, dance music by DJ Galaxy, the raising of the Rainbow Flag, and rainbow lighting of City Hall. In addition, the celebration includes a 7 p.m. free performance by artist Ultra Naté
UNCENSORED Leslie Jordan takes the stage at the Mary Pickford on Saturday. who has had seven No. 1 dance hits including the songs, “Free,” “Automatic,” and “If You Could Read My Mind.” The celebration also includes a Battle of the Bars-Bartender Competition. ne of Hollywood’s most glamorous ladies, the legendary Ruta Lee, will share her memories on stage at A Toast To The Stars: The Palm Springs Variety Show. Outside, under the stars, the event will be hosted at the beautiful and private rancho estate known as “The Ratpack Hideaway.” Ruta Lee is renouned for her extrordinary body of work in film, television and theater, spanning seven decades. Lee was signed by MGM as the youngest of the “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and subsequently in “Funny Face” with Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn. She was cast as Tyrone Power’s secret love in “Witness for the Prosecution,” and Frank Sinatra’s leading lady in “Sergeant’s Three,” to name but a few of her many films. Ruta Lee will join the entertainment at the the weekly event, which includes dinner and two wine, beer or soft drinks per person. Enchanting Spell New ‘Beauty and the Beast’ a sumptuous retool of Disney’s ‘tale as old as time’

t’s a tale as old as time, so goes the song. At least as old as 1991, when Disney put an animated, song-filled spin on “Beauty and the Beast,” the 1700s French fairy tale about a cursed prince, the village maiden who becomes his prisoner and lessons about love, acceptance and belonging. The former “Beauty and the Beast,” a hugely popular hit and critical success, was nominated for six Oscars and won two, becoming the first animated film to ever receive an Academy Award nod for Best Picture. That’s a high bar to reach for, but Disney goes for it in its lavish new retooling, which combines sumptuous live action with extravagant special effects. Emma Watson is Belle, the headstrong hamlet bookworm longing for something “more than this provincial life.” Dan Stevens plays the haughty young prince doomed by a callous act to live forever as a shunned, outcast beast—unless he can find someone to love, and someone who’ll love him back. The new movie follows its animated predecessor almost note for note; the storyline, characters and songs are just where they used to be. But there are also new versions of the signature tunes, some new musical snippets and two completely new songs. The new movie adds a couple of new sequences, like the magical trip Belle and Beast take for Belle to discover her childhood roots. It’s fun watching the 1991 movie get “fleshed out” with people where cartoons
used to be. At two hours and almost 10 minutes, this Beast feels overstuffed, especially since the 1991 version was 45 minutes shorter. The blowout musical numbers seem out of time, like something Old Hollywood would have made in a bygone era of elaborate, over-the-top soundstage productions—more “Wizard of Oz” than Oscar-snagging “La La Land.” But for anyone who fell under the enchanting spell of “Beauty and the Beast” more than 25 years ago, and later, there’s certainly a lot to love again—including encouraging signs that Disney continues to change with the times. So enjoy the walk down memory lane, the new movie’s fresh, real-people flourishes, its 2017 tweaks and its high-tech, special-effect shines on a familiar old story—this “tale as old as time.” And look closer and you’ll also find, indeed, as another song says, “something there that wasn’t there before.”
