illie Jean King, tennis great and one of the 20th century’s most respected and influential people, will headline the second-annual ANA Inspiring Women in Sports Conference, tournament officials announced today. The conference takes place on Tuesday, March 28 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, in advance of the ANA Inspiration, the LPGA’s first major championship of the season. “It is important that all of us—especially women—have an opportunity to participate in events like the ANA Inspiring Women in Sports Conference,” says King. “Sports are a microcosm of society and athletes have an opportunity to use their sport as a platform to enact change and inspire others. I look forward to joining these world-class athletes and having a candid discussion about the importance of action and change in sports and in society.” King, a sports icon and social justice pioneer who became the first female athlete to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, will deliver the keynote address followed by a question-and-answer session with conference emcee Julie Foudy. Desert Writers Expo celebrates valley authors On Thursday March 30 the Community Room at the Rancho Mirage Public Library will transform into a book fair featuring writers who live and work in the Coachella Valley. In addition to being able to purchase unique published works, attendees will have an opportunity to network with local authors and talk about the process of writing, publishing and marketing. The annual Desert Writers Expo is the chance for members to showcase their finished products—everything from memoirs and manuscripts to cookbooks and true crime. The continued popularity of ebooks and self-publishing have
opened up new avenues for amateur and professional authors. More than half of the nearly 300 members of the Palm Springs Writers Guild have had their work professionally published and the Desert Writers Expo will showcase 30 of them. This is an opportunity for the general public to meet with local authors in an informal setting, discuss their writing process and support the literary scene of the Coachella Valley by purchasing books. College of the Desert to host inaugural faculty, students and alumni jazz concerts
College of the Desert announces its inaugural Faculty/Student/Alumni Jazz Concert as part of the “Jazz at the Pollock” season. Current students and alumni will join a faculty ensemble in a varied jazz program at 7 p.m. Friday, March 31, in the Pollock Theatre. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $5 for students, $10 for public. Fine art and automobiles to be showcased in Palm Desert Art & Automobiles, hosted by Cambria Gallery and Renova Solar, will showcase fine art and automobiles both inside and outside of the Cambria Gallery on Cook Street in Palm Desert. The featured artist is Andreas Somogyi of Seven Sixty Automotive Group, while the notable “Pinstripe Chris” will be painting live. The event is open to the public with donations in any amount requested. The event will be catered by Il Corso serving appetizers, along with a variety of wines and local craft beers available. There will be a live and silent auction, including a recently completed painting donated by Somogyi. His passion is building custom cars and creating large scale automotive racing paintings and metal sculptures. His work captures bold design, curvaceous lines, and streamlined looks. Chris Dunlop, aka “Pinstripe Chris,” is an automotive design

and render artist. He started out as an automotive painter that specialized in custom paint and high end restoration work on classic and exotic cars. From there he began airbrushing, doing sharpie art, and pinstriping. His work showcases custom cars, hot rods, and exotics. With this event all proceeds raised from the event will go to Desert Cancer Foundation to help Coachella Valley residents who are uninsured or underinsured to obtain screenings, diagnosis and treatment for cancer as well as allied diseases. Grant helps Friends of the Desert Mountains upgrade hiking trails Blooming desert wildflowers served as the perfect backdrop for Friends of the Desert Mountains to receive the $25,000 Coachella Valley Spotlight grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. Each year more than 20,000 valley residents and visitors enjoy the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center, off Highway 74, and hiking trails, which the organization supports. Friends of the Desert Mountains recognizes the ever-increasing

to coordination and design. Beyond conservation and preservation, the mission of Friends of the Desert Mountains includes research and education. • 4 cloves garlic, minced and divided • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped • 4 plum or Roma tomatoes, coarsely chopped • 1 slice whole-wheat or multigrain bread
Pasta Salad with Tomatoes
In bowl, cover and chill pasta. In large mixing bowl, combine vinegar, 2 tablespoons basil, sugar, salt, pepper, red pepper, 2 table spoons oil and half of minced garlic. Whisk to combine well. Add pasta, bell pepper and tomatoes, and toss gently until well coated. In food processor or blender, pulse bread to produce coarse crumbs. In medium skillet, heat remaining oil over medium-high heat. Stir in breadcrumbs and garlic. Saute 1 1/2-2 minutes until browned and crisp. Remove from heat and let cool. Top pasta with garlic crumbs and remaining basil.

The Desert Symphony celebrates anniversary with LeAnn Rimes The Desert Symphony is celebrating its 28th Anniversary with a gala and concert starring the incomparable LeAnn Rimes. In addition, the Desert Symphony will be honoring Ruta Lee, whose career has included both stage and screen, with the Amadeus Award for her philanthropy and dedication to the Performing Arts.
