Noteworthy happenings around the desert KCOD radio station brings home 13 national awards KCOD, College of the Desert’s student radio station, won 13 Golden Microphones at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s national awards ceremony in New York. KCOD Coachella FM won First Place for the Best On-Air Schedule that represents the station’s overall programming and content and the Best Training Manual that Station Manager Toni Bakal created for new students. KCOD received another 11 awards for being among the top three in the nation. The squad was among three stations nominated in the highly competitive award for Best Community College Radio Station in the nation. PGA West announces plans for multi-generational sports club
The park superintendent, under the authority of Title 36 C.F.R., section 1.5(a)(1), has issued a closure order to all public entry and public use activities for the area described as “Morongo Man Cliffs” (approximately 1 km NW of Split Rock parking lot). This is designated an emergency situation for the protection of natural resources. The presence of a pair of nesting Redtailed Hawks, in close proximity to a number of climbing routes, (Morongo Man, Morongo Child and From the Mouths of Dogs), requires closure of the area. The closure will remain in effect until the birds have fledged and the nest has been abandoned.
Plans have been announced to build a new four-acre, multi-generational Sports Club, opening in early 2018. the stateof the-art facility will feature an array of world-class amenities, including a fitness center, spa, a 25-yard lap pool, bocce ball and Petanque courts, a dog park and a drive-up movie area for golf carts. Other exciting features include tennis, pickleball, volleyball and basketball courts, plus a 22-hole putting course, restaurant and a fully stocked open-air bar with fire pit. While golf will remain the focal point at PGA West, the new Sports Club will be open throughout the year offering cu-

‘Chicago’ is back in town and it is pure entertainment

et amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, “Chicago” is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids. The national tour of “Chicago” is directed by David Hyslop and choreographed by David Bushman. Walter Bobbie is the director of the original New York Production and Ann Reinking was the original choreographer in the style of Bob Fosse. “Chicago” features set de-

Sensational Sounds
A rare, sublime beauty blooms within the Los Angeles Cello Quartet
T
he Los Angeles Cello Quartet brings its passionate and vibrant show to audiences at the Richards Center for the Arts at Palm Springs High School on Monday, March 20. The backstory of this remarkable group is interesting to note. It was nitiated by Ruslan Biryukov, founder of the Glendale Philharmonic Orchestra and The Los Angeles Cello Quartet. The ensemble was first introduced at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Fundraiser in Palos Verdes in May 2010. The sensational sounds created by four
charismatic cellists-soloists immediately attracted public attention, and the quartet was instantly placed into a category of the leading chamber music groups. Mr. Biryukov is excited to represent a new generation of creative professional musicians whose artistic level is recognized not only by awards but also by a worldwide audience. Cultural History Matters
Heritage Festival celebrates cultures that helped settle of the Coachella Valley
LEGENDS LIVE ON Vibrant personal histories of early settlers reveal the dynamism of culture and the importance of history.
T
ake a step back in time. That’s the idea spearheaded by the Heritage Festival, which takes place on the grounds of the Coachella Valley History Museum in Old Town Indio. The Festival provides a unique opportunity to learn about the significant cultures that led to the settlement of the Coachella Valley all in one place. The festival showcases the personal histories of Cahuilla, Mexican-American, Anglo, Black, Japanese and Armenian families by means of “story boards” that detail their timelines and presence in the Valley. In addition, foods and entertainment representing these cultures will be featured throughout the day- folkloric dancers, a gospel choir, fiddlers, storytellers, Barnaby Finch’s Jazzgrass band from Idyllwild and Japanese Taiko drummers, will highlight the event. Early-American craft demonstrators will be on hand to share with our audience. Visitors will enjoy watching weavers and spinners, wood carvers, potters, paper crafters, leather working and much more.
Visitors can also take a jeep tour of the mural in old downtown Indio. Vintage Cars from the ’20s and ’30s will show in all of their splendor. Children can participate in old fashioned games and activities such as sack and egg races, jump rope, clothespin doll making, origami folding, Cahuilla crafts, dress-a-dolly, and Aunt Polly’s wash room. This family-oriented event is free to the community. The grounds of the Museum boasts many vintage exhibits and buildings. The center of the grounds has the 1927 Dr.Smiley-Tyler adobe home, surrounded by a complete blacksmith shop, farm equipment, the 1909 oneroom Indio Public Schoolhouse and the Date Museum. The grounds also features a memorial Japanese garden, Dr.Carreon Desert garden, memorial rose garden, a working date garden and a Cahuilla ethnobotanical garden. wned and operated by the Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians, Spotlight 29 Casino opened its doors in 1995. Of course, the campus has grown and undergone significant modification in the ensuing years, including an expanded parking structure and a brief partnership with Donald Trump. At the center of it all sits a pretty restaurant called Jem Steakhouse that couldn’t have been a more delightful surprise. Where in the world have I been? The snug bar area allows sippers to people-watch across the casino floor through a wall of windows, certainly not an unusual set-up. No. It was the dining room that was a revelation. More reminiscent of an upscale East Coast chop house, this quiet room is elegant and tasteful. Charcoal colored linens, sparkling glass wear and weighted cutlery speak softly but eloquently about the dining experience envisioned by manager Dino Pappas. A seasoned veteran in hospitality, with more than three decades in the hardest business in the world, Dino has definite ideas about what

tion of filets, chops and Australian Rack of Lamb. I’m a fish lover and have fallen in love with the Chilean Sea Bass (mild and flaky). Crisp grilled asparagus, fat and full of flavor, is a popular side as are both Lyonnaise potatoes (butter, parsley and thinly slivered onions) and creamy mashed potatoes, whipped to perfection. And along with their regular dinner bill of fare, Jem offers a special Date Night
menu on Wednesday and Thursday full of your favorites over three courses at wallet friendly prices. Start with either the fragrant lobster bisque or a chilled Caesar Salad. The Bill Cunliffe Latin Jazz Ensemble concert enlivens Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series
T
he Bill Cunliffe Latin Jazz Ensemble brings an exciting, and powerful sounds of “Imaginacion” to Pete Carlson’s Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series on Saturday, March 18. The ensemble includes pianist Bill Cunliffe, Brandon Fields on saxophone, Kyle Palmer on trumpet, Francisco Torres on trombone, John Belzaguy on bass, Ray Brinker on drums, and Joey De Leon on percussions. Cunliffe, a compose, arranger, and educator pianist, is known for his innovative and swinging recordings, and compositions. He has worked with top musicians like Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, Joe Henderson and many other jazz greats. In 2009 Cunliff won a Grammy for Best jazz Instrumental Arrangement. Saxophonist Brandon Fields has played in the Southern California area for the
last 35 years. Fields played on the 2002 Latin Jazz Album of the Year by Alejandro Sanz, “Y Solo Se Me O Corre A Marte.” Fields also played on the 2005 Grammy Award winning album by Ray Charles “Genius Loves Company.” Trumpeter Kye Palmer is a long time LA studio player who studied with Bobby Shew and Charlie Shoemake. Palmer has worked with Woody Herman, Chris Walden, Lee Ann Rimes, and many others. Trombonist Francisco Torres is an arranger, composer, educator, and musical director for Pancho Sanchez. Torres has been on five nominations for Grammy and Latin Grammy Best Latin Jazz Album. Bassist John Belzaguy has played with the Latin jazz group “Yoboso,” and many Southern California vocalists and jazz groups. Belzaguy is a solid, experienced

accompanist who is comfortable to play with diverse musical artists. Drummer Ray Brinker was a member of the Grammy Award-nominated “One ‘o’ Clock Lab Big Band.” Ray plays in the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band, and has played in more than 30 different musical groups that includes jazz, pop, and rock. Percussionist Joey De Leon has been street trained on the timbales and hand drums, and is co-music director of the Lucky Seven Mambo Dance Band. alm Canyon Theatre goes to one of its many strengths when it presents the George S. Kaufman-Moss Hart comedy “You Can’t Take It with You,” March 16-19 in Palm Springs. Derik Shopinski directs the classic play, which won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, followed by the 1938 Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director (Frank Capra). Co-Artistic Director Se Layne notes that “each character in the play has a unique hobby or defining quirk, which provides the show with funny, unexpected twists.” For example, Morgana Corellli plays Penelope “Penny” Vanderhof Sycamore, the matriarch of the family, who writes plays and paints, even though she is terrible at both. Corbett Brattin plays Paul Sycamore, Penny’s husband, who manufactures fireworks in the family’s basement. Co-starring are Ron Coronado, Tom Warrick, Suzie Thomas Wourms, Ashley Davies and Daniel Zepeda, Shopinski also designed the costumes for the production, and Co-Artistic Director J.W. Layne, who also plays iceman Mr. DePinna, has created the set and lighting designs. very year, a group of dedicated volunteers from Sun City Shadow Hills put together the annual Drive Against Hunger Charity Golf Tournament, hosted at Eagle Falls Golf Course. The group has raised over more than $125,000 to various organizations throughout the Coachella Valley to provide help for individuals and families struggling to survive. This year, all proceeds will benefit the Galilee Center in Mecca. This organization provides help annually to more than 18,000 families with food, clothing, financial aid, and facilities. The cost for the tournament is $150 per person and donations of any kind are welcome. The tax deductible fee includes green fees, range balls, tee package, continental breakfast, refreshments throughout the day, and after tournament party where there will be a grand buffet, prizes, awards, raffles, and silent auction. his new production of “Beauty and the Beast,” with music by Tchaikovsky, brings the brilliant Malandain Ballet Biarritz to the McCallum stage. The rich and complex symbolism of this tale known by all was a rich source of inspiration for choreographer Thierry Malandain. Malandain Ballet Biarritz is part of the National Choreographic Centre in Biarritz, France. Thierry Malandain, Artistic Director and Choreographer, says “Without revisiting all of the tale’s interpretations, a comingof-age story can be detected designed to resolve the quality of being, with Belle embodying the human soul and the Beast being its life force and instincts,” notes Thierry Malandain, artistic director and choreographer. “Whether it be lost unity of human nature torn apart, accompanied by Tchaikovsky’s symphonic works, our version of the Beast, freed from his inner demons, marries Belle under a blazing sun.” The particularity of Malandain Ballet Biarritz is that it is made up of 22 permanent dancers trained in classical technique and whose expression in Thierry Malandain’s choreographies is contemporary. Today Malandain Ballet Biarritz is one of
Europe’s most widely seen companies with 80,000 spectators per season and almost 100 performances per year, including a third abroad. As a National Choreographic Centre, Malandain Ballet Biarritz also works intensely in terms of public awareness of dance – with on average over more than 450 events per year–and support to artists and companies thanks to the Accueil Studio program. Its local presence has led it to forge fertile partnerships with numerous cultural actors in the Euro-region. It has thus constructed the Ballet T project, a partnership between Malandain Ballet Biarritz and San Sebastian’s Teatro Victoria Eugenia, with support from Europe and the Aquitaine Euskadi fund. Its aim is to spread choreographic art in the Basque Country, by co-producing and disseminating choreographic works, and also through awareness campaigns and audience mobility within the Euro-region. An Art Event to Cherish Frances Stevens Park hosts the dynamic Desert Art Festival

O
ne hundred amazing artists will converge in Downtown Palm Springs, at Frances Stevens Park, for the Desert Art Festival on President’s Weekend. The Desert Art Festival is scheduled for March 18-19. The Desert Art Festival will feature artists presenting their own original work in all mediums of fine art, including paintings in acrylic, oils, watercolor, photography, etchings, sculpture in clay, glass, metal, stone and wood. Each artist will be present to meet with the public and discuss their work. All work is available for purchase. The Durden Art Studio will be featured at the festival. Durden is an artist, entrepreneur, and advocate for innovative visual storytelling. He has spent the last 16 years as a professional independent thinker, doer, and maker. After graduating with a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design, he quickly began work creating storyboards, architectural renderings, trade show designs, and developing characters for both regional and national clients. Durden worked with over a dozen advertising agencies, and built a resume full of fancy corporate clients. It wasn’t until making Laguna Beach his permanent home in 2010 that a new focus in his own creative vision occurred and
his unique smart pop-art style was born. Each original acrylic painting is hand drawn on wood panel or canvas and finished with traditional brushes without the use of computers or technical aids. It’s the belief that art is meant to be interactive, even challenging, that is at the core of each painting. Content is the most valuable commodity, with originality a close second. That said, in addition to being stand-alone works, the clotheslines are conversation pieces with a trivia component. Each clothesline is a puzzle designed to tell a story by including little Easter eggs in the form of hidden words as well as added bonus features to keep your interest as more nuances appear over time. In addition to fine art, fine crafts will also be presented. Festival patrons will find blown glass, turned wood, semi-precious jewelry, pottery, stained glass, and an array of high-quality crafts. Admission and parking for the event are free. The Desert Art Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19. Frances Stevens Park is located at 538 N.
