Tennis, Anyone?

BNP Paribas Open is the ultimate fan experience

FAN EXPERIENCE The Indian Wells Tennis Garden boasts several amenities that thrill both players and fans.

W

hen the Indian Wells Tennis Garden opened in 2000, the venue was an instant hit. Featuring the 16,100-seat Stadium 1, the second largest tennis stadium in the world, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden boasted several amenities that thrilled both players and fans. With a desire to enhance the fan experience each year, the venue has undergone a cycle of renovations that has turned the sporting world upside down. Following the 2013 event, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden underwent a massive project to build a brand new 8,000seat Stadium 2, featuring three permanent restaurants overlooking the court action, including world-renowned Nobu. The 2015 BNP Paribas Open also featured several improvements, including eight new video screens inside Stadium 1 to enhance the visual experience. Stadium 2 also received new shade awnings to all

the restaurant patio areas and the Point Bar, along with a designated reservation check-in area for all three restaurants with seating, television screens to watch the matches and a new bar. Additional seating was also added throughout the venue. The 2016 BNP Paribas introduced Phase 1 of the Stadium 1 makeover. New seats were added to the upper and lower bowls. A Champions Box was also added for VIP guests. Now, as we look forward to the 2017 BNP Paribas Open, Phase 2 has finally arrived and the results are incredible. From Stadium Plaza, to suites, to restaurants and concessions, to hospitality areas—have transformed Stadium 1 and put it on par with any other major tennis stadium in the world. Fans will immediately notice a change to the Superwall, for video, is substantially larger allowing it to display up to five matches at one time.

8 | Desert Entertainer | March 9-15, 2017

The area frames the entire outside of the venue, creating an amphitheater-like effect to watch matches. The major bonus for 2017 is the addition of 21 new restaurants and concessions, highlighted by Wolfgang Puck’s Spago—overlooks the court in Stadium 1, giving fans an unprecedented view of the second-largest tennis stadium in the world. Spago is the third restaurant at the Tennis Garden overlooking a court, as both Nobu and Chop House offer that amenity in Stadium 2. Beyond Spago and Nobu, venue partner Levy Restaurants has brought 20 other concessions and restaurants to Stadium 1 ranging from B.S. Taqueria, from Esquire’s 2015 Chef of the Year Ray Garcia, and Dave’s Doghouse, from two-star Michelin chef Josiah Citrin; to Cassell’s Hamburgers, a reinvented classic hamburger stand from Christian Page, and

Melissa’s Produce, the Los Angeles-based fresh vegetable-focused offering; to local favorites Piero’s PizzaVino, serving traditional Neapolitan style pizza, and Sherman’s Deli, a desert institution for the past 50 years. To say that the Indian Wells Tennis Garden has received a massive makeover since its opening in 2000 is an understatement. However, what cannot be overstated is the commitment that tournament staff makes to assure the BNP Paribas Open is one of the best sporting events of the year. Fans who visit the venue in 2017 are certainly in for a treat! For more information and tickets, visit bnpparibasopen.com, download the tournament app in the iTunes or Google Play stores, call 800-999-1585, or visit the box office at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

K

athi Hilton and her late father, John, and the duo’s exhibition of paintings promises to leave an impact when it debuts at the Palm Desert Historical Society March 17-20. John Hilton is best known for being an early desert painter and many consider the Hiltons the first family of desert art. Kathi Hilton will be in attendance all four days of the exhibit and will be available to talk with visitors about the luminaries she and her father knew, including desert painters Jimmy Swinnerton, Maynard Dixon, and Bill Bender, as well as her dad’s friends General George Patton and Howard Hughes. A Resident of Roosevelt, Utah, Kathi Hil-

ton grew up at her father’s gem shop and art gallery at Valerie Jean corners in Thermal, and often visited the Desert Magazine Art Gallery in Palm Desert. Once headquarters of the vibrant Smoke Tree Painters scene, the building is now occupied by Manhattan in the Desert restaurant. Kathi and her father also spent time at The Living Desert, where John Hilton and other artists painted dioramas for wildlife exhibits. astrology

Horoscopes March 9-March 15 ARIES (March 21-April 19). You will love the work you’re doing and may actually choose to work perpetually as a result. Your loved ones who are similarly happy at work will understand. The others, not so much!

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). When fantasy relationships become reality, illusions soon dissolve. The bubble of specialness around the situation may pop. And if you still like each other after that, this relationship has real potential.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). If you were to summon all your powers of creativity (and they are mighty strong today, to be sure) to redesign yourself, who would the new you be? Don’t let the ones who knew you before hold you back. They’ll adjust.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). When you can be your less-than-ideal self with someone, it means you are closer with that person than you are with the people you feel the need to constantly impress. The question today is: How close do you really want to be?

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Progress and struggle go together. Some would argue that they must — that there is no progress without struggle. Then again, an inspiring influence can make the struggle seem mild, even satisfying! CANCER (June 22-July 22). The love experts have spoken: Don’t fall in love with someone who flirts with everyone. If you disregard this advice (or have received it too late), then at least take comfort in the fact that whatever happens next, it’s nothing personal. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Your life will be better through the magic of delegation. But this only works if you do it the right way: Joyfully hand over the task; let go; walk away; don’t look back.

CROSSWORD ANSWERS

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Containing passionate feelings is, as a rule, hard for humans. You’re the exception to this rule. You can stay cool even when there’s a volcano going off in your emotional body. It’s an amazing trick you’ll practice today. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You wonder if you may have under-loved someone who deserved a better quality of attention from you. You may not get the chance to rectify this with the same person, but you’ll pay it forward. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Maybe there really is a time for everything, and yet you can count on the fact that it’s seldom a convenient time or one that’s under your control — another argument for doing instead of waiting. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Being the different one in the group isn’t bad, but it does mean you’ll have to acquire more credibility and skills than the others. It won’t be hard. The hardest part is accepting the injustice. Once you do, the rest is cake. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Since most of the relationships in your life are involuntary (family, neighbors, co-workers, etc.), it makes sense for you to be very choosy about the ones that are voluntary (friends and more). Exercise your right to be picky.

The Life of John

Comedy legend, John Cleese brings the laughs to the McCallum stage

B

LIVING LEGEND Take a walk down comedy lane with John Cleese.

ritain’s living legend of comedy, John Clees hits the road for laughs and a leisurely walk through his life for two performances at the MCCallum Theatre. Clees will be sharing stories from his autobiography “So, Anyway…,” the cofounder of Monty Python talks about how he became a celebrity despite having some talent. It’s the life of Britain’s most revered and ridiculous son, a not-to-be missed journey from impropriety to notoriety. Cleese is both a versatile comedic actor and a leading business motivator. With the legendary British comedy series “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” and “Fawlty Towers” and films, “The Holy Grail,” “The Meaning of Life,” “The Life of Brian” and “A Fish Called Wanda,” he created a unique comedic style that has inspired countless writers and comedians.

22 | Desert Entertainer | March 9 - 15, 2017

“The world’s funniest man” first made his mark as a member of the legendary Monty Python troupe in the ’60s, and has gone on to write, produce, direct and star in some of the greatest comedic hits, receiving an Oscar nomination for best screenplay for “A Fish Called Wanda.” But Cleese is far from your garden variety entertainer. From the beginning of his career he has continually parlayed his enormous talents into advancing the political causes he believes in; promoting education; and teaching business skills (the training videos created by his Video Arts production company are viewed by millions of people in the UK and abroad). In 2014, John released his New York Times best-selling memoir “So Anyway….” The book shares his ascent in the entertainment world, from his humble begin-

nings in a sleepy English town and his early comedic days at Cambridge University (with future Python partner Graham Chapman), to the founding of the landmark comedy troupe Monty Python that would propel him to worldwide renown. John Cleese enthralls packed audiences worldwide. Whether he’s coaching novice comedians, discussing his liberal politics, or imparting his formulas for success in education, business and life, he always leaves audiences clamoring for more. Don’t miss this leisurely walk through with John Cleese at 3 and 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 12. Tickets for the performances are available at mccallumtheatre.com or by calling 760340-ARTS. Wicked Ways Keanu Reeves returns to ultraviolent past in ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’

BIG AND BOLD “John Wick:Chapter 2” is a hard-hitting action packed film. By Neil Pond

Y

ou know John Wick, right? “The man, the myth, the legend,” as one character refers to him admiringly. The nattily attired hitman of few words who lets his lethal skills do the talking— who once dispatched three assailants in a bar with only a pencil. The character of Wick marked a comeback for Keanu Reeves in 2014, when he blasted his way onto the screen in the original pulpy, action-packed tale of a former killer-for-hire grieving the death of his wife, seeking vengeance for the murder of his adorable puppy and hellbent on getting back his stolen, high-performance 1969 Mustang. “John Wick: Chapter 2” does exactly what its title suggests, picking up where the first movie left off and moving the story along even further down the road, even deeper into a world teeming with Russian gangsters, international racke-

John Wick: Chapter 2

Starring: Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Common & Ruby Rose Directed by Chad Stahelski Rated: R Theaters: Mary Pickford Theatre, Regal Cinemas Rancho Mirage Stadium 16, Regal Cinemas Indio Metro 8, Century Theatres Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert 10 Cinemas, Regal Cinemas Palm Springs Stadium 9, Century Theatres La Quinta, Camelot Theatres, Regency Theatres.

teers and murderous multicultural muckety-mucks. Wick is pulled back into his violent past when a former connection calls in a “blood marker” requiring his assassination services. Then Wick gets double-crossed with a $7 million contract on his own head that sends every other hitman scurrying to collect. This film is an action junkie’s all-youcan-eat buffet, and it’s certainly well done. Once again, director Chad Stahelski draws on his own rough-and-tumble oncamera experience, as well as the obvious inspirations of Japanese action, kungfu and martial-arts cinema and good ‘ol splatter-y spaghetti Westerns. The explosive gunfire has real kick, bam and boom. You “feel” the thuds, thumps, whacks, whams and cracks of the bruising body blows. And some of the fight scenes are truly spectacular extended sequences of choreography. “Big and bold” certain describes “John Wick: Chapter 2,” especially if you like your action with a capital A. It’s fitting that its climatic showdown takes place in an art museum, because there’s certainly an artistry to its over-the-top violence, its extreme body count and the blood that spews from heads and torsos onto walls and other surfaces—in the art gallery, the crimson splatters, sprays and smears blend in with other exhibits like pieces of morbid, minimalist modern art. But of course, it won’t be for everyone—unless you’re a hardcore action aficionado, or a diehard fan of the fist John Wick film. This one’s just as Wick-y, and in many ways Wick-ier.
